The Maranao Culture and Tradition
DMITRI ETHAN C. BELANDRES, B. S. PHAMACY 1-A
@evienovich /  evienovich.tumblr.com
If there is one tribe that can arouse your interest, try discovering the Maranao Tribe, a Muslim Tribe that adheres to Islam Belief.  The Maranaos are known to inhabit most of the municipalities of the province of Lanao del Sur and Marawi City, its capital.  Visit and see for yourself how the culture and tradition of the Maranaos stay compact, and amazingly resilient against outside influences.
One of the Islamic Muslim Tribes in the Philippines which has sustained its culture and tradition even in the modern days is the Maranao Tribe.  The term Maranao literally means “People of the Lake,” with reference to the location of the Tribe’s habitat immediately contiguous to Lake Lanao, south of Marawi City, in the province of Lanao del Sur, and one of the Bangsamoro Regions.
The Maranaos, as they are called, have their own spectacular culture and tradition peculiar to them which make them stand out from other Muslim Tribes.  They are known for their metal crafts, architecture, colorful dances, cultural attire, tapestry, distinctive cuisine, and epic literature.
One of the most popular art manifests of the Maranaos is their vivid color combinations.  This taste of art that displays bright, eye-catching colors attracts not only the locals but even foreign visitors who came to know their art.  This eye-catching color combination taste which they integrate with their other forms of artistry, is truly amazing and captivating.
Among the most distinct and an essential trademark of the Maranaos’ art forms is the Sarimanok.  The Sarimanok is a legendary bird that serves as the symbol of the Maranaos. Sarimanok came from the words “sari” (a garment of different colors deeply related to their culture) and “manok” (rooster with its beautiful and colorful feathers), believed to represent good fortune and prosperity, a symbol that the Maranao people in the Philipines are associated with, and a significant part of Maranao people’s cultural heritage.

CULTURAL DANCES
Another art form of the Maranaos which also made an impression in their distinct culture and tradition are their dances.  The cultural dances also showcase the Maranao’s ingenuity.  Performing these dances highlight certain celebrations such as during festivals and occasions intended for entertainment.  Their trademark prevails in the use of ornate colorful costumes and instrumental music.  Their dances were created from the Darangen, an ancient epic of the Maranao community.
One of their famous dances include the Kappa malong-malong which is also known as Sambi sa Malong.  This is a cultural dance where dancers show the several ways of using malong. It portrays how malong is worn with the fabric combined of many bright colors, an identity of the Maranaos’ taste of colors.  The meaning of the dance lies in the aim of partaking the usefulness of malong that to fully absorb the steps of this dance, one must learn and understand the significance of malong – a simple tubular yet highly functional piece of cloth for all Filipino-Muslim.

Another popular dance is the Singkil, a royal dance where the woman gently steps in and out of the clipping bamboos while holding a fan.  The woman dancer wears an elegant colorful costume as the main dancer.  Its music is by the sound of a gong, an original sound intended for the dance.  This dance is one of the proofs of Maranao’s original dances which identifies them from other tribes, a true Maranao pride.

Along with the art forms like the Sarimanok and the dances reflective of the Maranao culture and tradition is the Torogan which literally means a resting or sleeping place.  It is a traditional ancestral house symbolizing a high social status or nobility among Maranao People.  This pre-colonial house was home of the royal blood whose positions in the community were that of sultans or datus deemed political leaders looked up with great respect by their respective constituents.
The Torogan portrays the ingenuous architectural prowess of the Maranaos.  One of the last standing Torogan and the only remaining habitable structure was declared as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines in 2008 which can be found in Bubung Malanding, Marantao, Lanao del Sur.  This structure was built without the use of nails only fitted joints and fiber lashings.
It is one of the attractions and pride of the Maranao Tribe as it reminds them of the historic deed of their brave leaders who withstood Spanish conquest.  The Torogan symbolized rank, power and prestige.
TOROGAN

Torogans were elevated from the ground using “tukod” or hard tree trunks of huge girths. At the center is the “tapuwilih” post surrounded by twenty-five others at the base.

Another part of the culture and tradition of the Maranaos is their distinct taste of food.  They have a different choice of food and preparation.  Travelers from neighboring provinces and students of the Mindanao State University (MSU) have been privileged to taste the delicacies peculiar to Maranao Tribe. Their famous cultural delicacies include the sakurab. It’s made with palapa (dried coconut shavings and dried chili), local native scallions and chili, a common appetizer for the Maranaos.
Known for love of spicy flavors, most of their food are indeed hot and spicy.  The palapa also serves as a mainstream ingredient in most of their popular dishes like pyaparana manok (chicken with coconut meat), beef randeng (beef with coconut), bakas (tuna fish), and badak (jackfruit) with coconut milk and powdered turmeric [kalawag], which adds a yellowish color that sets their food apart food from other Muslim Mindanao cuisines.
During their month-long celebration, Maranao’s special ‘kakanin’ delicacies also highlight the event, most of which are made from sticky rice flour with coconut milk and brown sugar such as dudol, tamokansi, tiyatag, pabrot, and many more.

The traditional clothing of the Maranaos goes with their art form display of colorful, handwoven clothes. A known conservative tribe, women wear tightfitting short blouses and narrow cut pants resembling breeches and a wrap-around material to make certain that their bodies are fully covered.   Men on the other hand, also wear narrow cut pants and wraps a sash-like cloth around the waist where he places his weapon – usually a long knife.

Army and Police Foil Bombers IED Plans in Cotabato City
Tumblr media
Military and police bomb experts safely deactivated at dawn Thursday two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) left near the main gate of the Husky Bus passenger terminal here. Col. Querubin Manalang Jr., city police director, said the plastic bag containing the powerful IED and a secondary bomb inserted in another plastic container were found at about 3:40 a.m. by one of the utility personnel at the terminal. Manalang said one IED was made of flash powder and cut concrete nails as shrapnel with a mobile phone as the blasting mechanism. The bomb disposal units also deactivated the secondary bomb, fashioned from a rocket-propelled grenade, with a mobile phone as the triggering device, found near the terminal’s concrete fence along the national highway in Barangay Rosary Heights 10. In an interview, Manalang said the planting of the IEDs could be part of the terrorist group’s extortion activities against Husky Bus. The bombing attempt came while Cotabato City was hosting the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Athletic Association (BARMMAA) Meet 2023. Manalang, however, assured the BARMMAA delegates from Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, and the Geographic Area in North Cotabato that the security sector is doing its best to prevent a similar incident. On April 17, a brand-new double-decker Husky Bus unit of the Gen. Santos City-based Biocrest Multi-Purpose Cooperative was bombed at the Isulan bus terminal in Sultan Kudarat province, leaving six persons injured. A secondary bomb was found on the second deck of the bus. No one has claimed responsibility for the Isulan bus bombing incident, but police have blamed the Dawlah Islamiya terrorist group and its ally, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), as those behind the attack, with extortion as the primary motive. At least 15 suspects have been charged with the Isulan bus bombing incident.   Sources: THX News & Philippine News Agency.   Read the full article

Lotophagy
Tumblr media

Mindanao's Most Heralded Hero
by K. Salarda
The year was 1619. Sultan Laut Buisan was dead. Rumor tells that, on his deathbed, the Sultan admonished his son Kuda to be wary of white foreigners looming at the distance. Sultan Buisan must have had a premonitory vision. Perhaps, these imperious invaders could make Maguindanao bend its knees, if the latter were to be careless. Right then, or so he thought, the Spanish were just waiting for the perfect time to strike.
About fifty years ago, a terrifying news had spread in Mindanao. It said that the Spanish inquisitors had arrived and taken over Cebu. In a span of few years, Visayas was dragooned into accepting Spanish supremacy. The Dutch, meanwhile, gained an upper hand in the spice trade in Banda islands, Indonesia in early 1600s. By the time of his father’s death, Kuda witnessed the burgeoning competition among colonial powers, mainly the Dutch and the Spanish, aiming to monopolize trade in Southeast Asia. Kuda construed that both would soon vie for control over Maguindanao, it being a valuable strategic location along the Celebes Sea. And so it was clear that, when he took over the Sultanate throne, Kuda would reign in such a precarious time.
Yet Kuda proved to be the right leader at the worst time. Indeed, in what would be the most astonishing feat in Mindanao history, Kuda or Sultan Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat ruled with a tight rein throughout his illustrious 52-year rule and successfully protected Maguindanao liberty from western imperialists. His reign made the Maguindanao Sultanate reached new heights of power; its zenith covered in today’s nine provinces: Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Zamboanga del Sur.
So how...did he do it?
Tumblr media
He drove out Spanish invaders.
First of all, Sultan Kudarat was no ordinary man.Various accounts reported on his vast knowledge, brilliance, and incredible foresight. He was a faithful ally and a formidable opponent. Cognizant of the Spanish threat, Sultan Kudarat immediately consolidated his power by conquering Cagayan de Oro, Caraga, Misamis, and Bukidnon. Then he united fellow Muslim leaders of Cotabato, Lanao, and Basilan. In 1632, he strengthened his relationship with the Sultan of Sulu by marrying his daughter.
When the Spaniards finally made their strike, he was able to amass a massive force that defeated the Spaniards in their battles waged from 1634 to 1637. But the Spaniards proved to be persistent. One such battle in 1637 in Lamitan mortally wounded him; fortunately, he managed to escape.
He went to Lanao and bid his time there to gather a stronger army. It was at that time when he made his iconic speech that inspired the people to defend their pride and liberty. Five years after, another war broke out. But Sultan Kudarat with much greater help from other Sultanates was more prepared; thus, the Spaniards were defeated; their leader was captured. In the following years, Sultan Kudarat and the Spaniards conducted a series of peace treaty. Finally by 1662, the Spaniards abandoned their forts in Ternate in Basilan and Zamboanga City. This signalled their abandoned goals to conquer the entire Mindanao hegemony.
In view of all events, Sultan Kudarat defeated the Spaniards for three main reasons: strong leadership, powerful alliances, and a well-organized fighting force. But it was his Islamic faith, being a common ground found in fellow Muslims or Moros, that made the most crucial factor as to why unity was easily achieved. It carried a zeal that the Catholic Spaniards could not break.
He banned spice cultivation in his domain.
There was a time in history when spice was more valuable than gold. Indeed, the value of spice peaked in the seventeenth century when the world, especially Europe, was searching for it. The biggest supplier of spice was situated in Molucca islands in Malaysia. Not soon, a fierce competition ensued among colonial powers: the English, the Portuguese, and the Dutch who later became the victor.
In 1621, two years after Sultan Kudarat ascended to the throne, a terrible news shocked the Southeast Asian people. About 15,000 natives in Banda were massacred by the Dutch who then assumed complete control over the whole plantation. The killing greatly depopulated the area; but the Dutch spared a few whom they could command force labor.
As soon as they extracted the agricultural industry and trade, the Dutch sent various expeditions in uncharted lands nearby. When the news reached his ears, Sultan Kudarat extirpated all spices found in his domain and told everybody to never cultivate them. The Dutch, under the guise of friendly foreigners, regularly checked any such cultivation in Maguindanao. They found none.
Perhaps, Sultan’s decision to veer away from such cultivation de-escalated the tension between the Mollucan Dutch and Spanish Manila, which was also involved in the spice trade.Yet to the future Mindanaons, Sultan Kudarat saved his people whose lives could be in danger if the conflict were to happen.
He maintained an independent foreign policy.
Though already powerful, Sultan Kudarat steered diplomatic relations whenever possible. He was a multilingual who could speak Chinese, Spanish, Dutch, and English, which greatly helped him maintain good relationship with foreigners; however, he kept a distance and never sided with any European power. Maguindanao’s interest was always Sultan Kudarat’s priority.
After consolidating power with local chieftains in Mindanao, he forged alliances with Indonesia, Brunei, and Malaysia. It was due to these alliances that won him battles against the Spaniards from 1656 to 1658 when five sultanates led by Sultan Kudarat himself launched coordinated attacks against the Spanish strongholds in Visayas.
Maguindanao was never conquered.
Finally, the sun was setting down for Kuda. And the year was 1671, about 52 years after he ascended to the Maguindanao Sultanate. He had already accomplished his and his father’s goal long ago. Tomorrow, when then sun sets again, people will live to tell the tales.
It did.
Accounts about his legacy written by the Jesuit scholars were found hundred of years after. A most heralded historical figure today in Mindanao, Sultan Kudarat was declared a Philippine national hero in 1973, about 300 years after his death.

A JOURNEY TO MY TRUE SELF
BY EJAY BABAR
They said that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step, a thousand words starts with a single letter and the immeasurable experience happens every second. But what if the path I take is wrong? What if the book I wrote was ruined? What if just one freaking accident happened to me causing my entire life to be destroyed? Could I be able to fix myself? Now I'm still longing to find my true purpose in living and use it as a guide to find my path while I'm lost in the wilderness.
Let me start my story by telling you the story of my parents first. My mother was born, raised and bloomed in the Land of Golden Opportunities, where all people were given a chance to live their life to the fullest. The land was scenic forests, stunning waterfalls, panoramic views of mountains and the pristine marshland of Agusan Del Sur. But not all opportunities were given specially to my mother ' s family, she grew up lacking financial support but despite it she still continued to strive harder until she managed to graduate with flying colors. But because of her responsibility, she was not able to pursue her dreams and just work to provide for her family.
While my father was born, raised and grew as a fine young men in the land were the top producer of coffee in the Philippines can be found also the former empire province of Cotabato is located which is the Sultan Kudarat. Unlike my mother, the family of my father was known as one of the most wealthiest families in the province before. All the opportunities was already given to my father and to this twin brother but despite of those they are the worst student you could ever paint. They are active in alcoholic liquors, cigarettes and different girls, but all that wealth is gone when my grandmother dies due to cancer. Because of that everything was change, they begin to suffer until they work as a farmer. To make the story short, my father met my mother when he went to Agusan for some transaction. My mother was working while my father saw him. Despite having 10 years of gap the two lost souls found each other and fell in love with each other and bloomed there love with a awesome kid.
My journey started in the year of the fire monkey when the astral body formed and aligned to our planet. Year 2004 of April 19th when the night is superior and the full moon was already aroused in the province of Sultan Kudarat. The night is deep and full of secrets, but this night it will bring joy to the hearts of my parents. This is the night to celebrate the newcomer grace from the creator, the birth of a child with hair as black as night and the eyes shining as a moon. My parents combined their names to make a wonderful collision of words and they made my name "EJAY". It is not just a simple word they named me because it has a hidden meaning which is " a boy creates a quick, analytical and clever mind, creative, versatile, original and independent". Even my nickname means "Jay " for rejoicing or may God protect, but sometimes people used to call me "Pol" specially my mother because that name was given to me by my deceased grandfather as honor to his name "Policarpio".
Since the beginning of my time both of our family from father side and mother side were believed and servants of Almighty God. My father side was a part of Roman Catholic civilization due to the influence of the Spaniards on my great ancestors, while on my mother's side they were protestant because of the influence of Martin Luther to my ancestors. My Grandfather, my mother was a pastor and leader to our church before, and now he's already retired due to some health issues.
I grew up in a church surrounded by beautiful people with a beautiful perspective in life. I grew up full of wisdom coming from my grandfather. Maybe that is the reason why at my early age I have a maturity that some children don 't have.
But things have changed in year 2010 when the most tragic event happened to me when I was accident and my left arm was amputated. All of my dreams vanished and hatred and disappointment only I have. Growing with having an disability is really hits me hard, but the people who also talk about me or spreading gossips about my capabilities hits me harder. People saw and treat me differently than those kids who don't have any deficiency, when my parents always tell me to ignore what others say but it still hurts, their stares at me as if I will dissolve in too much shame or not so the thoughts they think about me that are not good, makes me suffer more and weaken me inside. So from my childhood I could not be considered a best friend because no one wanted to be friends with me. I learned and got used to being alone and talking to no one because I was afraid of the possibility that what happened before would happen to me again. I have a lot of trust issues with other people because I'm afraid of being bullied again and I don't want that to happen to me again. My introvertness started to get worse until now, I was afraid to have attachments towards people, especially to those people whom we just met temporarily.
On the other page of my journey, I Am still not fully recovered from what happened to me, even though I still minding those filthy glares, gossips and issues I still dance to the storm. I still face the reality that even I throw my whole life there is no changes so I was to change my own perspective in problems even though I struggle in pain and neglection it still part of the process. I know that all life is just temporary, that is the reason why I still choose to fight rather than to blame myself. This is just the beginning of my journey and I can't wait to write my story in another chapter. I am not already halfway through my book and I'm still at the shell ready to get out anytime, I'm just waiting for the right moment for me to break it and take off. But now before that I need to find my own nest to grow more, I need more courage to accept the challenge I'm facing.
They believed that everything that happened has a reason but what is the reason? I really don't know why but now I am still gaining myself back where I was 12 years ago.
