Haiti was also punished for its independence by the colonial powers. It was forced to pay a huge indemnity to France, and faced trade embargoes, diplomatic isolation, and military interventions.

Haiti was also exploited by multinational corporations and NGOs, who profited from its cheap labor, natural resources, and humanitarian aid. They also imposed their agendas and policies on the Haitian people, undermining their sovereignty and democracy. Haiti was also devastated by natural disasters, such as earthquakes ( a earthquake they are still recovering from that happened in 2010 and then a earthquake that happened in 2021 that killed 1,419 people) hurricanes, and floods, which worsened its already dire situation. Haiti was also victimized by diseases, such as cholera, malaria, and COVID-19, which ravaged its population and health system. The diseases were often introduced or exacerbated by foreign actors, such as the UN peacekeepers who brought cholera to Haiti in 2010. Haiti was also marginalized and silenced by the mainstream media, which portrayed it as a hopeless and helpless case, ignoring its history, culture, and achievements. The media also spread misinformation and stereotypes, fueling racism and stigma.

Haiti was also betrayed and abandoned by its allies and neighbors, who turned a blind eye to its plight, or worse, contributed to its misery. The United States of America, in particular, has a long history of meddling and undermining Haiti's sovereignty and stability. Taking 500,000 dollars from Haitian banks and still collecting money. The United States of America has invaded, occupied, and intervened in Haiti numerous times, imposing its political and economic interests. It has also exploited Haiti's labor and resources, and blocked its development and trade. sugar refining, flour milling, and cement and textile manufacturing, clothing, scrap metal, vegetable oils, dates and cocoa are all things given to other countries by Haiti. It has deported and detained thousands of Haitian refugees and asylum seekers, and discriminated and criminalized them.

Yes I am Haitian my dad side is from Haiti. My fathers family moved up here to Seattle because Haitian was going through a small silent genocide and have been since they have been free from France in 1804, France took my countries money and told them that they have to pay reparations just for existing and they had to pay France just to be free from the French. And then America jumps onto the bandwagon and decides to take billions of dollars from Haiti. Haiti was once the richest country but became the most poorest because of ignorance.

My people are being killed everyday just for speaking out against their government, my people are being killed because nobody was their for them when the 2010 and the 2021 earthquake happened because “Haiti is a bad country and helping them won’t do anything” and they are still recovering from that to this very day. Families are being displaced, the violence is getting worse, innocent people are dying and are fighting trying to stay alive, women and children are being r$ped and kidnapped. I have family that live in Haiti that I lost all contact with because they are fighting everyday, and who knows if they are even alive.

day 8: christmas crafts: cadnis

"Jay, do you by chance have a second bag?"

"The only bags I have are the ones under my eyes designed specifically to carry the burden of my existence."

"Jesus Christ, Janis. Literally all you had to do was say no." Cady rolls her eyes and steps around Janis to grab another plastic bag.

"Sorry, babe. You help carry it too."

"Janis!" Cady laughs softly while piling groceries into a bag. "Do you want all the baking stuff in one bag and all the craft stuff in another or do you want me to just throw it all in?"

"Put the sugars and flour and all that in one bag and then put the excessive amount of glitter glue and sparkly things on top. Oh yeah, and put the clay with the heavy stuff. Then put the wooden frames in this bag-" she waves a second bag at Cady- "and also the sprinkles and icing."

"Sounds good," Cady replies, starting to take the groceries she'd haphazardly tossed into a bag out of them and putting them in the way Janis asked. "Do you wanna do cookies today or ornaments or paintings or what?"

"I kinda want to do the sculptures, actually," Janis says, kissing Cady on the head on her way over to get the receipt. "Is that alright with you? Let's do the cookies closer to Christmas."

"Yeah!" Cady bounces on her feet, excited at the idea of spending an entire day creating things with Janis that aren't made of paint. She remembers the mud statues she used to make in Kenya: brown 'animals' lined up on the bank of the watering hole. She's only really made one good one, and it was an elephant; the mud was particularly tough that day. She was so proud of it, sprinting back to her mom. "Mama! Daddy! Look! I made a... a nelephant!"

Her mom had exchanged a small smile with her dad as she led them back to the watering hole, having to circle back every few feet because of how much faster she was going than her parents. "Come on!" she'd groaned, and they picked up the pace. But when they finally arrived, the nelephant had been crushed. So was Cady. She loved playing with the mud, how it shrank and shaped under her fingers. Maybe this was an art thing she could be better at than Janis for once.

They carried the bags back to the car and began the short drive back home. It was one of Cady's favorite types of drives. The ones where there's no talking or music on, just comfortable loving silence and the growling of the engine. The ones where Janis stops at red lights and kisses her hand before she keeps going. The ones where no one has to say anything or even look at each other to know they love each other, and the happy feeling bubbles up inside her and fills the car with warmth and light and comfort, and she knows it'll all be okay.

"What are you gonna make, baby?" asks Janis when they get out of the car. Cady smiles and grabs a couple bags.

"An elephant, definitely. You?"

"You'll see," says Janis, smirking at Cady from behind the car seat as she pulls the last bag free. In reality, she has no idea what she wants to make. The way Cady is grinning, though, she'll have to do something good. Something really good. "I can't wait to see your adorable little elly though!"

"Nelly," Cady corrects absentmindedly.

"Huh?"

"What? Oh. Never mind. Sorry."

Janis chuckles at Cady's flusteredness and gently lifts her bag out of her arms and onto the table. "It's alright, flutterby. Wanna get out the tarp so we don't ruin the table?"

"Yeah!" Cady hops up and goes to get the yellow-and-blue checkered tarp while Janis retrieves the clay and gets out two cups of water. Neither of them consider themselves to be particularly good at sculpting, but it's alright. They're doing it together. That's what counts.

Cady immediately dips her fingers in the water and starts rolling out some balls. Janis was smart enough to get out toothpicks, so she cracks two of them in half and uses the pieces to attach the elephant's legs. She's not even close to done, just has the basic body shape without even a tail or head, but she's making more progress than Janis, who's just been rolling a ball under her palm for the past five minutes.

The thing is, Janis has a secret. A big one. She glances back up at the paper chain they'd made two days before and counts the links again. Seventeen days until Christmas. Seventeen days to wait. And she has no idea how Cady will react.

Before Janis can get too worried and worked up, Cady flicks a little bit of clay water in her face.

"Hey!" she giggles.

"Hmm?" asks Cady, looking up from where she's gone back to shaping the trunk. "I did nothing."

"Yes you did, you little stinker!" A smile grows on Cady's face and she looks Janis directly in the eye. Neither of them move. And then a tiny clay ball makes its way to Cady's neck.

"Hey, yourself!" she squeals, tossing more water in Janis' general direction. Janis can tell there's about to be a battle, so she moves Cady's elephant and her blob of nothing onto the counter so they don't get smushed- not that it would matter that much if hers did.

For the next thirty minutes, they throw clay and water at each other. Cady gets into the glitter and now Janis is shining purple- Damian would be jealous. Janis retaliates by pouring water into her hand and sprinkling it over the top of Cady's head.

"How dare," says a clay-stained Cady, the light in her eyes shining almost brighter than Janis has ever seen it. Maybe it'll get even brighter soon.

"You get what you ask for," she replies, kissing Cady on her wet hair. "What do you say we get back to our clay?"

Cady nods in agreement and moves to get the sculptures. She picks Janis' blob up. "What's this, Jay?"

"It's, uh... a work in progress."

"I think it's beautiful." Cady's just being generous. Her elephant looks incredible. Rather than debate it, Janis changes the subject.

"How is an elephant related to Christmas?"

"I don't know," says Cady, rolling out a tail between her hands. "I can just paint it in red and green."

"What if you, um..." Janis looks around the room. "Oh!" she exclaims, her gaze landing on the Nativity scene. "What if you put Joseph on top of it? A Kenyan Christmas?"

"Kenyan Christmas usually looks more like everyone melting in the heat and Nat trying to ride a zebra. Good idea though." Janis notices that while Cady talks about Natasha, she fails to mention her other sister, Nairobi. She doesn't pry, though. She knows Cady will get to Nai in her own time.

"What about giving it a little Santa hat?"

"That's not a bad idea." Cady holds the now-complete elephant shape up to the light. "Still looking forward to your thing."

"I'm working on it," Janis replies, though she's really not. She's just been adding chunks and pressing little dimples into the blob. It looks like a whole lot of nothing. "What's your favorite animal?"

"A lion, silly. Did you even have to ask?"

"I suppose not," says Janis. "Does it have to have a mane?"

Cady shakes her head, and Janis gives an audible sigh of relief as she starts rolling out an oval for its body. "Hey, this is the first art thing I'm better at than you. Maybe the mud critters did help my sculpting skills."

"What?"

"Oh, I used to make all these animals out of mud from the watering hole and leave them to dry. I didn't think they were ever really good. But I made entire armies of them."

"That's what we can do!" says Janis. "We can make a troupe of animals like the ones you had back home, but with a Christmas spin!"

"Like give them all Santa hats?"

Janis' mind is racing. "No! Well, yeah, but you can also do, like, Christmas-style blankets over their backs, or strings of lights! Or snowmen, gingerbread men, snowflakes..."

"I suppose it's a good thing we bought all this clay," Cady says, grinning from ear to ear.

"It sure is. Now put that beautiful elly down and let's get going!"

For four hours straight, Cady and Janis work with the clay. Janis gets better as they go on, Cady helping her from behind, guiding her hand over the slopes of their limbs and telling her where she needs water or a toothpick. Janis is nervous at first, but soon gets more comfortable with the whole process- the scoring on both sides before limbs can be added, the way that removing cracks and seams needs a seemingly endless amount of rubbing with water until you finally finish and it's onto the next one.

Eventually, Janis finishes her lioness and Cady makes a mate and two cubs for it. Janis sculpts a baby elephant, and Cady turns clay lump after clay lump into rhinos, zebras, giraffes, cheetahs, jackals, pangolins, mongeese, even a crocodile and a baboon. Janis has to look them up online, but Cady pulls each one out of her memory. The perfectly imperfect stripes on the zebras' backs. The horns on the heads of the rhinos turned in the right direction each time, while Janis keeps having to steal glances at the completed ones to figure it out. They're almost out of clay when Cady remembers one more they need to create.

"Jan," Cady asks, clay clumping the ends of her hair together and smearing her face like war paint, "can you make a viverrid?"

"A what?" Janis asks, running her damp fingers through her dip-dyed hair.

"A viverrid. They're super cute. I kept some as pets. The ones I always loved were the super long tailed kind, with the little spots and stripe on 'em. I think they were part of the subfamily genettinae. My favorite was Sika. She was a pardine genet, super pretty. You may have grown up with your hamsters and gerbils, but I was living it up in Kenya with the viverridae."

Janis giggles as Cady passes her the iPad to look at a reference. "So it's like a cat but longer, with smaller ears, and much more pretty?"

"Exactly."

"And you're sure you want me to do it?"

"Yeah."

"But, Cady..." Janis gestures over to the lines of sculptures on the counter. Cady's side is elegant, all perfect curves and lifelike poses, while Janis' are clunky. Cady's look like they could come alive at any moment. Janis' look like they already did and died a hundred years back.

"All it'll take is some paint and they'll look fine."

"You're positive."

"Yep. You do that, I'll clean the kitchen."

At this point Janis would rather clean up the mess covering the entire room than make one more creature. "Tell you what," she says. "If you make this Jenny thing-"

"Genetta pardina," Cady interrupts.

"That. If you make that, I'll paint all the critters. As long as you get them in the oven and be my assistant."

"Deal." Cady smiles and picks up the clay.

Janis tries to clean the kitchen. Really, she does. But it doesn't go quite as she planned. She gets distracted very easily. And what's better to distract her than Cady completely in her element?

She pauses at the table, watching Cady completely invested in the making of Genetta pardina. She's so beautiful. Even covered in clay, she's so beautiful. So intense. The focus in her eyes could probably drill through the Earth if she directed it anywhere but the animal coming alive in her hands. Entranced by the motion and her smile, Janis leans against the wall, the washcloth slowly falling out of her grasp.

Cady glances up, a tiny smile dancing on her lips. "Hi there, baby."

"You're so pretty. I mean, uh. Hi."

Cady giggles. "I finished the genet."

"It looks beautiful, love. A prime specimen of, um, Vivian parrot." Cady sighs with a breathy laugh and gives Janis a peck on the nose.

"Get the first ten of these in the oven, alright? I'll finish the kitchen."

And off they go. 45 minutes later, the first round of animals come out of the oven at 3:47 PM.

Ten minutes after that, each one has their base coat.

And a grand total of eight hours, forty minutes, and twenty-five seconds after that- 12:38 AM the next day- each animal is completely done. Baked, painted, baked again, touched up and glazed. Janis swears it's because of Cady's excellent artist assistant skills. But they both know the truth- Janis is an extraordinary painter. Each animal has a Christmas touch- the elephants with red and green swirly blankets over their backs, the pangolins holding presents in their little paws, snowflakes piling up on sleeping cheetahs and mystifying jackal pups. Cady's genet or viverrid or whatever it is is tangled in glaze-shiny colored lights like a cat, lying on its back with its paws poised above it. And Cady was right, the paint did fix them. They all look perfect in their own precious way. Janis' work with the brush combines with Cady's gentle fingers to create incredibly lifelike creatures, ready to come alive and run out of their clay casings.

The Kenyan Christmas critters look absolutely incredible. And both girls, covered in clay and paint and glaze and water and perfect, unbroken happiness, look incredible as well.

Let’s Talk About Steven Universe

*WARNING* This … “essay” has my opinions only. I am not speaking for the community, I am speaking for me because I like to express myself and there are people like @susanaaatc​ out there who like these kinds of discussions. So if you want, I’d like for others to give me their whole opinions on the show as well. Hell make a whole post about it like I did and tag me in it so that I can see your opinion. With all that stated, let’s get down to Bismuth.

So Steven Universe came out in 2013 and I was 11 years old at the time. I liked Regular Show and Adventure Time, not to mention I was obsessed with Rise of the Guardians and Monster High, so I was a bit preoccupied to watch the show. Eventually though, my best friend at the time talked about it constantly and she brought up the concept of fusion. She showed me the art book of the show that she bought and it showed how two completely different gems could fuse into one gem to become stronger. This is where my interest started, and it was the same concept that started pushing me away from SU later in it’s show run. 

So fusion in Steven Universe is mostly treated as a relationship, and it’s not always just romantic. It can be between two friends, it can be seen as a more sexual relationship between two gems, a romantic relationship, or a parent-child relationship like with Steg (Steven and Greg’s fusion). This is an amazing concept and I love it so much but… I’m not here to talk about what I like, I’m here to talk about what I dislike. 

One of the best characters in the show is Garnet. Garnet was revealed in season 2 (I think) to be a fusion between the two tiny gems Ruby and Sapphire, and Garnet is the manifestation of their love. She’s an amazing example of not only a healthy, respecting, and loving relationship between two people, but also is an amazing example of a healthy same-sex relationship. You see, Steven Universe uses “code” to represent something like race, gender, and age… But we’ll get to that later. My problem isn’t really with Garnet herself, but what Rebecca and the Crewniverse has made her in to. Many have said it before, and I agree. After her reveal as a fusion, Garnet was no longer the cool, collected, fun-in-her-own-way “mom” we knew before, she turned into a fusion, and a symbol for fusion, and a representation… of a fusion. After the reveal, all the crewniverse seemed to view Garnet as… was a fucking fusion! She lost a lot of personality in the 3rd and 4th seasons in my opinion and was really only used in the plot when it had something to do with fusion. To me it’s like having a friend group with only one Asian friend and the rest a different race, and then only inviting the Asian friend to hang out when you’re going to watch Anime, or a Kdrama. It’s a bit racist is it not? Just because you can relate a character to something in the plot does not mean that character has to be there. Maybe instead of putting Garnet in every fusion episode (with the exception of “Earthlings”) just mention her. She doesn’t have to be in every damn episode that has to do with the subject. 

A lot of people have an issue with Bismuth… and I can understand that. Let me explain why. “Coding” is what a creator of any media does to give the consumer an idea of a character’s personality, race, age, gender, etc, without it being too obvious. Off the top of my head I’ll state what I view the “coded” characters as.

 Garnet, Sapphire, Sugilite, and Bismuth are coded Black.

Amethyst to my knowledge is coded Hispanic or Latina or something like that.

Pearl, the Diamonds, Opal, and Rose Quartz are coded White.

Rainbow Quartz and Aqua Marine are coded White and British.

And I’m not sure about Peridot, Lapis and Jasper are supposed to be coded as.

So the race thing has brought up some issues. In the official artbook that I mentioned earlier there was a concept design for Concrete and the design was a little… oof. People weren’t very happy… lemme just show you.

So obviously people weren’t happy that good ol’ Concrete here looks like a blackface character from the early 20th century animations. And I agree it’s pretty bad, but I don’t think it was intentional. 

Some controversial things that come from the show (other than countries like Kenya being assholes and trying to act like LGBTQ doesn’t exist) are the portrayals of two specific characters, who also happen to be fusions, and I agree with most things people don’t like about them.

Let’s start with Stevonnie. Stevonnie is the nonbinary (but let’s be honest she’s a girl) fusion of Steven Universe and his love interest Connie Maheswaran (I had to look up how to spell her last name smh). They’re supposed to represent Steven and Connie’s closeness as best friends and their growing crushes on each other. Rebecca Sugar has also stated that they’re a representation of puberty…. Excuse me? Puberty must have went swell for you Sugar. There’s someone who made a video about why they hate SU, that person being the ever controversial Lily Orchard, and she covered why Stevonnie is just… honestly she’s waifu bait. I agree with probably everything Lily says about this character because… it’s true. Puberty seriously ain’t pretty, and it sure as hell ain’t sexy until after it’s done… sometimes. Also, Sugar is contradicting herself saying that the Crewniverse isn’t sexualizing two very under age kids because Stevonnie is Steven and Connie’s ages added up… which would make the fusion 26 years old… that’s a bit old for puberty Rebecca. It feels to me like they wanted to make a sensual character, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but they didn’t really want to add a new character so they just put the two love interests together. But that’s so fucking wrong. I’m sorry, but sexualizing Stevonnie, which they are doing btw, I will make a post if you question it, is like people shipping siblings or an underage person with someone way older than them and saying “it’s totally fine because they’re just characters” (*cough cough* Ereri *cough cough* Hitachiin shippers *cough*). If you’re going to use that excuse, but then get angry at people who don’t take the character seriously because they are just a cartoon, then you’re a hypocritical asshole. Sorry to tell you. Stevonnie is a very good character overall though. I’m just uncomfortable when they appear because they’re two kids in a trench-coat with curves like an anime schoolgirl and moves like someone who just successfully seduced a poor guy into giving them the secret to the Crabby Patty formula.

Now let’s move on to Steg, the fusion between father Greg Universe, and son Steven. There’s nothing wrong with them fusing because fusion in SU symbolizes a relationship, no matter what kind. However… why do two chubby men make a sex symbol rock idol??? That’s… that’s gross. Why the fuck is Steg so “hot”? Why on earth would you create a fusion out of a father and son and think it’s appropriate to sexualize them and make them gyrate their genitals like they’re an Elvis Presley impersonator? Just… WHY? Do I even have to explain why this is so wrong? Really? Honestly??? You can fuse Steven and Greg and not make it so sexual, but nah let’s give them rock hard abs, a humongous bulge a sharp jawline that neither of the two have, and a tight ass. What the actual fuck?? 

That’s not my biggest issue though. My biggest issue is giving the Nazi bitches a redemption ark smaller than my nonexistent cock. Endeavor from My Hero Academia is an absolute prick right? He abused his children, notably his youngest, and his wife, and is an absolute asshole to everyone, but he gets a redemption arch. Do you know why it makes sense though? First off because as far as we know Endeavor never committed genocide, and second because he’s not a Nazi, he’s an abuser. Abusers, whether we like to admit it or not, can eventually see the error of their ways and understand that what they’re doing is both wrong and that it doesn’t work. Endeavor is getting a redemption arch because he obviously loves his kids, he just doesn’t know how to show it because of some circumstances we may not know. 90% of the time an abuser was abused themselves growing up, so they grow up with that resentment and they go one of two ways. They see how wrong it is and knows that it won’t get them anywhere in life if they bully others to stay on top, or they think that since they went through it and came out alive, then others should go through it too. I should know, because my dad was from an abusive family, and he turned out fine(ish… long story) while his brother and sister are pieces of shit that can’t hold a job or a home because they’re too involved in criminal activity to do so. 

What does Endeavor from MHA have to do with the Space Nazi Diamonds in SU? Well people were sending Horikoshi Kohei death threats because he had the gull to redeem an asshole, and SU fans are pissed because Rebecca Sugar had the lady balls to “redeem” space Nazis. The difference being, you can be redeemed if you were an abusive cock, but not if you’re a genocidal bitch. There’s a huge difference. 

Rebecca and the Crewniverse giving the Diamonds a 4 episode redemption arch is absolutely abominable. Peridot’s redemption? Fucking amazing, beautiful, couldn’t have done it better myself. Jasper’s? It’s currently going amazing and they’re doing a great job keeping her in character while also making her likable and even a bit charming. Lapis? Oh… let’s talk about her shall we?

Lapis Lazuli’s character is an absolute disaster. She’s a cunt, she’s a horrible friend, and my god is she abusive! Lapis was supposed to be a sympathetic character, and for a while she was. You could feel bad for her because her gem was damaged and she was trapped in a mirror for thousands of years and when she’s finally released, you understand her want to go back home and why she took the Earth’s ocean to try and reach it. It was understandable when she didn’t want to break out of the prison ship because she was anxious and scared of being locked away for another thousand years. It was easier in her mind to just behave and wait. When Jasper convinced her to fuse with her Lapis didn’t really want to, but saw an opening for the freedom of the humans and mostly for Steven, the one person who saved her from hell. But then everything went south.

Lapis and Jasper were fused as Malachite for months, obviously in a very stressful “relationship”, and apparently a very abusive one as well. When they were finally able to unfuse, Lapis was played off by the Crewniverse as a victim of abuse. This may be half true. After all we don’t know exactly what happened with them at the bottom of the ocean. What we do know however is that Lapis admitted to being abusive. This makes her an abuser. She described how it made her feel happy to abuse Jasper, or “taking my anger out” on her. She admitted to abuse and the Crewniverse still painted her as a victim. They’re both victims of abuse, and they’re both abusers. But that’s not what makes Lapis a horrible person… gem…

Lapis is a cunt… again. It’s okay to be antisocial, it’s okay to be cautious and stand-offish because you’ve been trapped, imprisoned and used so many times. What’s not okay is being a bitch to people trying to comfort or make friends with you, or try to cheer you up. Poor Peri, she was just trying to make amends and comfort Lapis after her whole ordeal with Jasper. Peri offered the cunt the thing that helped her organize her thoughts, the thing that calmed her in situations that made her anxious, the thing that comforted her and the first gift given to her by her first friend and the first person that listened to her thoughts, and the cunt destroyed it. She destroyed Peri’s recorder right in front of her, calling it garbage. Oh and the abuse doesn’t stop there, it only really began, because when shit started to hit the fan, instead of helping each other through it, Lapis abandoned Peridot and took the home they shared. Without a single thought she just took it and abandoned her, and it devastated Peri. I don’t remember her apologizing, and if she did it doesn’t matter because if I don’t remember then it must not have been very sincere. 

I’m sick of spitting negative shit so I’m gonna end this here. Personally I’ve been liking the last few episodes, but I’m not too confident that the finale is gonna be satisfying. Those are my thoughts, do with it as you will, but for God’s sake be fucking adults about it. If you don’t got the guts to curse without saying “h3ll” or “pu$$y” or something like that then you’re not mature enough to respond to this. I’m not gonna argue with 9-year-olds. I’ll only have a conversation with mature people.

Somehow, Kenya has aged over the summer. Her hair's more matted than it used to be, and her clothes could use a quick hand wash whenever they could swing it. Of course, Blue hasn't let Kenya go anywhere without him after Darla threw out his old one. So, there she is, aging worse than the rest of the family and on full display in the cup holder.

Ralph Angel eyes her from the driver's seat. Blue kicks his feet back down into the passenger seat with a huff.

“She’s coming with me, Pop.” Blue says it just about as stern as he can. “Kenya wants to see my new class.”

“You haven’t even seen your new class yet, buddy.”

Ralph Angel sighs. “Fine, Blue. Do what you want.” Kids get worse the older they get, and there’s no telling what sort of teacher Blue’s got this year. Ms. Valez used to look out for him. She cared in a way that not everybody does for the quiet, sensitive ones like Blue.

They pull the car up to the school. Blue unfastens his seatbelt immediately. Practically throws himself into the backseat to grab his backpack off the floor. Ralph Angel takes his time and scans the rest of the kids out there.

Zack and Nick, the boys who used to pick on Blue just to pass the time, are already running circles around a yard duty. Some little girls are whispering and showing off their new backpacks and outfits. Blue’s got a new shirt with all the Power Rangers on it. A little bright, but it’s nothing that would draw too much attention to him. Under the radar for the start of the year, and maybe for a long while after.

Blue plucks Kenya out of the cupholder and sticks her into the big pouch of his bag. Baby steps. At least she’s not in the water bottle holder. Blue turns and stares out into the sea too. His jaw sinks back together, and his breathing slows to a stop.

Rah doesn’t want his boy’s nerves to look like fear.

He tugs on a smile and nudges Blue with his arm. “You ready, son?”

Blue nods with his eyes still out on the crowd. He gulps, but then he nods more firmly. “Ready, Pop.”

Ralph Angel leads the way down the hall. A bunch of other parents have their kids with them. Or, maybe it’s the other way around.

Blue’s new classroom winds up being right across from the one from last year. Both Bordelons peek over, but the teacher in that room definitely isn’t Ms. Valez. Some older white lady with a vest straight out of a cartoon greets kids over there.

“Alright, here we are.” Rah nudges Blue again, so Blue steps into the second grade classroom. Some of the other kids are already talking and catching up with their friends. They look up once Blue steps in, but their smiles don’t have that recognition behind them that Rah would’ve liked.

He leans down over Blue to whisper, “Anybody you know?”

Blue shakes his head. “Just Kenya.”

Rah nods. The teacher — this Asian guy — breaks free of another parent to greet them.

“Hello, I’m Mr. Porter, and you must be Blue.” Mr. Porter holds out one thin hand that’s pretty much nothing but bone. Blue takes it with this wonder in his eyes.

“How did you know that?”

Mr. Porter winks down at Blue. “Can’t reveal my secrets on the first day. Hey, why don’t you go take a seat? You can sit anywhere for right now, and we’ll figure out the seating chart once everyone’s here. I’ll chat with your dad a second.”

Blue wavers then. He turns back to Ralph Angel. “You’re picking me up?”

“Yup, right at three. And Aunt Vi’s already thawing some wings for dinner tonight.” Rah ruffles the little fro on Blue’s head. “Now, go on. Let us grown folks talk.”

Blue takes a breath to steel himself. He takes a step forward as he scans the desks. There’s a few empty ones, most of them by friends catching up. But there’s one towards the middle left of the room, an empty seat next to a girl who’s already reading a book instead of talking to anyone. Blue heads over there.

He clears his throat real soft to get her attention and asks if anybody’s sitting there. Real polite. Then he slips on in and unzips his own bag. Ralph Angel’d be lying if he said his heart didn’t clench up. His breath sticks in his chest, and his teeth grind before Blue tugs out a coloring book from the bag. Rah’s chest hikes in relief.

Mr. Porter hums from beside Ralph Angel to bring his attention back.

“Blue will be fine, Mr. Bordelon. His teacher last year, Ms. Valez, already talked to me about how he’s a little quieter than some of the other kids. I’m hoping we can avoid some of the incidents from last year with this batch.”

Incidents like other kids bullying Blue, or incidents like Blue fighting back? Either way, it’s a little early for Ralph Angel to start distrusting anybody. He nods, gives his appreciation.

“Thanks. And you need anything, I work out at my farm. I can usually get away.” That said, if the teacher already knows to look out for Blue, then there shouldn't be much trouble. And, if school's no trouble, then maybe Blue can just learn and be a kid for a bit. Won't have to worry about where his mom's at, or what all he's overhearing about the farm and the mill and the Landrys. This could be good for them.

Blue even tears a page out of his book for the girl sitting next to him.

"I will keep that in mind," Mr. Porter says.

Ralph Angel drums his hands against his jeans a second. There's not much else to say, and Teach probably needs to get ready for what comes next.

"Great. Thank you." Ralph Angel steps back towards the door before he catches himself. “Hey, you get a chance, could you tell Ms. Valez thanks for me too?”

Mr. Porter grins a little too wide at that thought, one of those knowing kind of smiles that has Ralph Angel lifting up his shoulders and straightening out.

"I can. She's also going to be overseeing pick up on Wednesdays and Fridays. Just so you know."

Ralph Angel makes sure not to smile at that. Too wide a smile, and all these teachers gonna think he has a crush or something. "Maybe I'll keep that in mind. Alright, see you at three, Mr. Porter."

He gives one more glance towards Blue. Then to Blue's bag, but he can't see Kenya from where he's at. He just sees another normal kid. His kid, safe.

Day 7

Day 7 Sim, Andrea, Deb & Ali    Godo & Ziwani Ecclesias

Today we were to visit Godo, we watched as the women of this community made up the nutrition drink, made of oats, fibre, sugar and other ingredients, the consistency of porridge basically, we were offered a taste, but we need to be careful to how much we have as the temperature of the drink & the inclusion of the ingredients in the right order may make us ill, a farmer or herdsman arrived with 15 goats, these were handed out to the family elders

The goat program is a great idea, each family is given a goat, this goat once it has a litter, the litter is handed to families that don’t have a goat, so it could take years for the whole community to received their own goat for their house, as travelling along the goats are tied to a tree on the roadway, so travelling along there are a handful scattered for kms, once again they received 2 toothbrushes, a bowl, some soap, washing bar for their clothes and a wash cloth for bath/showers

As we travelled down a highway, on the way that leads down to Tanzania, we got stopped by police with AKs near Lunga Lunga, this was just a spot check, but they stopped everyone travelling thru, as the police got to the back of the car, one policeman said into the window ‘are you fine’, travelling with 2 Kenyans in the front, a group of white people in the back, they wanted to make sure we were there by our own free will, quite scary! Coming thru the earlier communities, there was a young girl (Seedy) about 8-9, who had just fallen over the morning we arrived, it appeared she had broken her arm, the dad said the arm was fine, she clearly wasn’t, due to the work that Sammy does with the children he is responsible for, suggested that she was taken to the Diani hospital, they put a splint on her arm only (update: she had dislocated her elbow, broken her elbow below the elbow, dislocated the shoulder, she would have been in a world full of pain, she made no noise at all, such a lovely demeanour, in the hospital, she had not seen electricity, tv, medical assistance before, she was quite timid & appeared ‘scared’ by this new technology, she had to have an operation with plates etc to put the arm back together again, poor child.

Ziwani… the journey in was quite a different change of scenery, there was no roads, how they managed to manoeuvre the car in & out of 10+ kms of trees, brambles, inhabitable terrain was beyond us, this was navigation by track only, going past trees & shrubs that had 4 inch spikey thorns, with each passing tree, these scratched down the side of the van, here they had an established nutrition program, the kids everywhere we go, love this drink, when they have finished drinking, they are getting their little hands into the cups & getting the last remnants of the drink out to suck this nutrience off their fingers

With every child in this community there was a health check done, we handed each child a piece of paper, all the paper had their ID number on, this was handed to the first station, Diane and Andrea, got the weight of each child, came down the line to myself, quick height check, written down on the paper, onto the last station, this was both Ali & Deb, this was a quick once over to see if any child had a white tongue or markings on their teeth (lack of nutrition), marking, lesions, scabs, things not healing, cuts or scrapes, top of there heads for anything as well

Once again goats were handed to the elders & families that did not yet have a goat, toothbrushes handed out to everyone that attended this gathering, we got to experience Masai warrior female dancing and performing, as we ventured back in the black of night, got stopped again by the police, this time they had road spikes across the road, stopping all cars, if you got past the check point, they would then use the Ak on stopping the car that way, passed thru a kids home for a couple of photos, was given a chicken as a gift, this will be part of the lunch for the childrens home

It has become apparent & we now realise there is nothing wrong with overtaking a truck on a crest of a hill, whilst other cars are coming the opposite direction, as long as they slow down, as the light quickly fades, we lose light, driving in the pitch black, raining, overtaking on a blind corner aarggghh

Having driven past a home to have the photos taken of a couple of sponsor kids, we left paper & a pen for them to write their letter to take back to Aust, we found out where they were based on landmark trees, road…stars? However they found them, found the couple of girls that had been waiting for us to come past again to pick up their letters up on the way back to the childrens home.

Arrived back at 7.30, has been a looong day, dinner in the hall with Sammy wife (Christine),Sammy’s brother (Zac), Elijah and the team, debrief

Sent to the kids home for a games night, earlier one of the other teams was given a goat as a gift, Ali named this little fella: ‘Chuka Choma’ (roast meat), they had prepped, roasted & cooked with lime & lemon, this was in quite a large serving platter, Adam from the home went from person to person & handed out this delicious gift

This was our last night with these young people in the home, this was the farewell from the home to venture onward to our next location, Seth, Jasmine, Mel, Jared, Jude & Mia organised a couple of games for the kids, while we waited for everyone to be ready we thought it would be a good idea to try the Mexican wave but some had no idea on how to do it, we then put the ball in the middle, bats at either end, call out a number, then first to get a goal wins, ‘Kenya/ocean/Aust’ running between the different locations, with the last person there was out and another game, we were then joined by Sammy, he offered a couple of kind words as we departed, it was sad to say farewell to the kids, there was a couple of tears from some of the kids, Deb offered a couple of words to the kids on behalf of the team of AinA to remember, they have taught us a few things & hopefully we have offered them some life tools, skills & words of encouragement to live by, to remember, and to remember us by, the opportunity was then for a couple of the kids to say a couple of words as goodbye, short meditation by Jarrad, prayer & farewell

Tomorrow will be heading to another ecc & then onto Mombassa

i’m probably just saying this because i have a crush on someone with this color eyes, but blue-grey eyes make me weak at the knees.

my favorite bag is my school bag, to be honest, because that’s where all the books are.

nope, i’m a night person, but i also force myself to sleep early.

omigod, there’s so many; i find almost everyone cute. one of my friends does this thing when she’s proud of herself when she looks so smug and adorable. my other friend doesn’t laugh that much, so when i make him laugh, it’s like i’ve just discovered the secrets of life. and when my friend/crush laughs, he goes pink and he scrunches his nose and i die a little bit inside.

i get really scared about emotions, but i don’t think i’ve been blood-curdling scared yet.

i love socks! i love weird socks and fuzzy socks and any socks. i try to sleep with my socks, but i remove them in the middle of the night and i don’t remember.

my cousins and i had just watched markiplier and danandphil play five nights at freddies, and we were spooked, so we started watching spongebob in the middle of the night.

the first time i ever had a crosant with chocolate inside, i died and went to food heaven.

i had an eeyore stuffed doll that i called doofy for some reason and i always slept with it. i had to leave it in kenya when we moved, but i’m on the hunt for another stuffed friend.

i have a necklace that my aunt gave me a few years ago. i always wore it to feel close to her.

the rosie project by graeme simsion. i got it at goodwill, and even my dad liked it. my dad very rarely likes the books i pick.

none yet, but there is a starbucks in our town that i’ve been to a couple of times. not only was it my first starbucks visit, but i’ve had some very good memories there.

really happy. i kept reancting lyrics and playing air guitar when it called for it. that song is fun.

i don’t really have a group of friends but i think i’d be the vodka aunt and my friend charise would be the wine mom. (sometimes it’s switched)

i like it but i very rarely read it. i feel like you have to be really smart to understand poetry, and i’m not smart enough.
