So my main overarching plan is based on a fusion of the two games that's basically as close to their own respective canons as possible, where the world building sort of grows around it rather than shaping it. In this, persona awakenings happen basically the same - at least to my understanding!
In Third Eye, personal personas are pulled from the sea of souls to bond with and reflect their user - they're not created from the users soul but are more akin to Bayo's demon summoning, where powerful and exclusive contracts can be forged where both demon and witch can be called upon by the other at their will, their magics entwined.
But bayonetta has multiple contracts, though they're weaker and less loyal than her main with Madame Butterfly, from whom she can use her limbs to attack and her wings to fly. Advanced rituals allow witches to take on halfway forms of their main demons, which may put you in mind of the fanart of joker in arsenes outfits :D. This is actually pretty similar to the wild card ability, where joker has his main/true persona Arsene, but can still form contracts with and use other persona he finds along the way!
Speaking of his persona, though, one of the things that I struggled with was what to do about his own demon contract. I spent ages trying to work satneal being half demon half persona into the world building somehow, but it just wasn't clicking, because I had three slots that needed filling but only two things to fill it with.
But then I found out about that one p5r dlc, which has akiras THIRD freaking awakening: Raoul, the false alias of Arsene Lupin. Sometimes lover, sometimes ally, sometimes the false name he disguised himself by. But his design is giving yellow Sci fi street thug who thinks he's all that compared to Arsene and satneals gorgeous black and red prince vibes ToT. Anyway, the fact that the other personas have actual upgrades, but Akira just has a false identity, that was actually really interesting. So, as long as we can overlook the yellow, it occurred to me that I might change it up.
What if this joker, with his secret identity of being an immortal gun slinging witch in training hiding from the government, awakened to raoul instead of arsene? And only after growing to trust his friends, his new family, and being able to open up to them about his past would he be able to awaken his true persona, the unmasked and unrepentant Arsene.
Because in canon it's the other way round, isn't it? Joker arrives as a kid who has nothing, a kid who got caught for doing the right thing regardless of the government, and it's only later that he builds a second life and learns the deception and subterfuge necessary to being a phantom thief.
And then satneal, the whole actual demon lord, could be his demon summon!! And his shadow would turn into a six winged bat demon hehe.
And the best part is there's a whole secret back story in bayonetta about how the current world began - there was a huge war aeons ago between the forces of heaven and hell that I think killed all of the Actual Universe Creating Deities, called Dea (bar one survivor who fell and now runs an underground weapon shop/bar that a xenomorph wouldn't look out of place in. As a piece of furniture). So both inferno and paradiso are notably lacking their bosses while earth still had Aesir (the guy who later split into loki and loptr). The angels wanted their boss back (who btw is a girl) but got tricked (by evil loptr) alongside the humans into basically an armageddon situation to resurrect loptr in his full power instead. Bayonetta teams up with Jeanne to summon the mysterious demon boss (?) queen, who then throws him into the sun before it gets to that point, destabilising reality. Basically in this au satneal is both very, very old, very, VERY powerful, and has been missing since the universe began. Him showing up to contract with Akira would be a HUGE issue in the bayonetta world, and I'm all for it. Let your kid out of your sight for less than a year and he summons the presumed KIA devil.
Man, I haven't even actually talked about the whole overarching plot. And why it's called Third Eye.
Right, the whole deal is that the trinity of realities are rapidly destabilising after the bayonetta games. Two magic cores called the left and right eye of the world (belonging to the sages and witches) got nuked. Demons are escaping summons, angels are going crazy and failing to pick up souls destined for paradiso, there's freak weather events, earthquakes, that sort of thing. Eventually the whole thing is, within the next millennium or so, going to shake apart completely and then we'll all be back in the primordial soup.
Loki tried to prevent loptr from making it worse (stabilised, yes, but much worse for humanity) by using humanity's free will to establish the meta verse and persona, so that humanity might have guardians of their own immune to the corruption that befell the sages and witches (persona users being immune to the mental corruption that would lead to forming Palaces). He hoped that by returning magic to humans the flow of energy would once more stabilise.
UNFORTUNATELY loptr caught on while he was making his own plans (involving possession and giant statues and I kid you not capitalism cults). And managed to break into the velvet room. Whether ol' yalda (aka demiurge) is loptr reborn or just his special minion idk I'm still working on that. But he finds akechi.
Akechi, who is a distant descendant of the sages on his mother's side. Who is almost unnaturally tall and beautiful and capable of the immense magic needed to be a wildcard, although his non-fool arcana limits him. Akechi would be perfect to sow the fear and destruction he needs to win humanity's thoughts and thus, their minds.
There's always something juicy about a 'last of their kind' finding someone like them, and I think it'd really enhance the tension between Akira and akechi. Akechi, who never knew why he and his mother were so different to everyone else, who could never have gotten the training Akira did. Who grew up having to conform and perform to public scrutiny in ways that Akira needed to reject in order to fully grow into his abilities. And the inevitable tragedy of his death, how he was already too far lost to ever be safe to tell, but he knew Akira knew something anyway. The rage of never being told. The guilt of never telling, even as it keeps your family safe.
But anyway. This story ends with the stabilisation, not destruction of the meta verse, that humanity can forever dream of bigger things than they will ever see. The phantom thieves of hearts might be young, but they have proved the strength of their very souls, and should the day arise that they are needed, they will be called upon once more. Though the two eyes of the world are long destroyed, the third eye, the third path has opened, and as one, humanity shall finally pave their own way.

To quickly summarise, Bayonetta is an unhinged fast paced fighting game (trilogy) about an immortal witch with demon summoning gun wielding powers, who hunts angels for their halos to earn money and feed the demon contracts so they don't eat her instead. It's incredibly campy and shameless, but behind the scenes it's got some seriously well researched lore and a wealth of world building that drew me to writing for it. It's visually gorgeous and amazingly cohesive.
So what started it all was a meme going around the smash bros community a few years ago when joker and bayonetta joined, about how she was joker's mother. And I, having played both games (but not smash, ironically), was instantly hooked. I really wanted to see a story exploring that, but there was only a handful of fics or comics that, while good, weren't what I was looking for.
So I started writing my own. It's a story about joker (I'm using the name Akira for him) being the blood son of bayonetta, and his life being raised by her and fellow witch Jeanne, who in this fic is living with them and co-parenting hehe. It's following him through his trials and tribulations of being the son of the last witch (they were all killed off in a very violent war with their counterparts the sages), his own training to be a witch via time travel (it's a whole thing) and - in the second half - the circumstances around being forced to leave his small circle of protection and being pulled under government scrutiny after saving shidos victim, where any wrong move risks exposing the last dregs of the supernatural to people who would want to ruin everything.
I'm purposely keeping it unclear how Akira was conceived/born, or who the other parent is (if there even is one), because it's not really relevant and I like the mystery! It's also unclear if Jeanne and bayonetta are in a steamy relationship or just doing a besties cohabitation thing for the sake of the kid, but again it's on purpose ;). And lets me avoid writing romance LMAO.
Unsurprisingly, it's the world building that's really making me struggle, but the general gist is that the afterlife is VERY convoluted.
So, in p5 you've got the meta verse and the sea of souls, which is where persona come from. Persona, who are mythological, literary or historical figures. You can summon persona and kill them to make weapons and accessories. Though you don't lose your persona upon entering reality again, it can't manifest.
In bayonetta, there's three planes of reality. You've got the obvious paradiso and inferno, and then purgatorio, a second layer of earth's reality where the games all primarily take place, where living things become faint shadows oblivious to your chaos - though they will freak out when you blow up their car! Angels and demons alike can be summoned to this plane, (though they often show up regardless lol), being sometimes mythological, literary or historical figures but usually just generic mob enemies (hey, just like persona!). Certain enemies can be taken to a guy to be killed and turned into weapons and accessories. There's a lot of similarity!
So, in Third Eye, the sea of souls that living humans cannot reach is referring to the three planes of reality, where angels, demons and human souls can be pulled into the meta verse to become persona. Awakening a 2nd tier persona is an evolution of the user's soul, strengthening it and making the magics easier. It's a third equivalent to the witch/sages, which is going to be VERY relevant in the second phase.
Also, in the second game, spoilers, there's a blue kid called loki who uses tarot cards to fight, who ends up being the amnesiac god of free will trying to save humanity from his evil counterpart loptr who wants to take control of humanity and remake the world in his image, and eventually he sacrificed his life to do so, with a promise to one day be reincarnated.
So that's where philemon was while Igor was taking over his velvet room :D.

Love at First Sight (Warren Worthington III Imagine)
Hello! So thing is something that I wrote for my friend @septicsadie‘s book on Wattpad. She got a request and wanted me to write it so, here it is! Please let me know what you think and I’m going to try and do requests so let me know if you want something! ~Meg

I groan as begin to regain consciousness to the sound of both Jean and the professor in my head. I sit up and rub my face trying to wake up when there’s a knock at the door. “What?!” I snap at whoever was on the other side of the door. I hear a slow whistle as my door opens and I roll my eyes.
“Wow. Is that the kind of tone you give to someone who was so gracious as to bring you breakfast?” Peter says, while walking into my room with a plate. I roll my eyes and chuckle at him, taking the bagel off the plate.
“I assume you’re here to make sure I get up and ready?” I ask him while eating. He raises an eyebrow at me a little confused. “Jean and the professor woke me up” I told him.
He nods, “Well you know you women and your hair and whatnot” he says and I scoff at him. “You and I both know for a fact that if you didn’t have your speed you’d take just as long as Jean or I to fix your hair!” I tell him smirking.
“I would not!” he tries to defend himself but just give him a look that says ‘oh really’ and he shuts his mouth. “Tell the professor I’ll be down, just give me like ten minutes” I tell him.
“Yeah, you got it. I’ll tell him 30 minutes” he says smirking. “Peter!” I grab a pillow to throw at him, but he was gone in seconds. I huff and throw the pillow back on my bed. Shaking my head, I finish my bagel and begin getting ready.
Once I’m dressed and ready I begin to make my way to the training area. It’s been a few months since any of us have been down here. After what happened with Apocalypse the professor gave us time off from everything; training, working out, even our school work. It was weird to see everyone so relaxed. After Jean and Magneto rebuilt the school we all had time to just hang out (and laugh at Peter’s struggle in a cast). It was like team bonding. I wonder why the professor would want the whole team to meet down here after all this time. I guess we do have to start training again at some point.
I get to the elevator that will take me down to the sub-level and just before the doors close I hear someone yelling.
“Hold the doors!” Someone yells and I stick my arm between the doors before they close and they open again and I see Ororo step in with me. “That was close” I laugh at her. “Oh shut up! I didn’t want to have to wait for it to come back up” she laughs “Plus I didn’t want to be late” she tells me. “Did Peter come to get you too?” I ask her, she laughs and nods. We sit in comfortable silence until the elevator dings and the doors open.
Warren’s POV:
I stand in the middle of a giant arena-looking room, a girl with red hair is on my right and a guy with red glasses on my left. I remember them from the battle, they both look around the same age as me. Professor Xavier is seated in front of me in his wheelchair getting ready to address the X-Men as to why I am here. I honestly didn’t know why I came here all I know is that I chose the wrong side and now I have to find a way to make it right.
The first person to show up is a woman with short red hair and blue skin and I recognize her immediately as Mystique. Then out of nowhere pops in someone who I wasn’t expecting. It was the teleporter I had to cage fight. The one who destroyed my wings. He looks around the room and makes eye contact with me and goes pale. I look down, not wanting to be reminded of what happened. He looks about ready to jump before the professor says “Please stay, I need you here for this Kurt” and they boy, Kurt looks between the professor and I and nods.
As minutes pass more people show up, but after a while I see the professor and the redheaded girl touch their temples before Mystique turns to a silver haired boy and he speeds away. After a few minutes he appears in the doorway “They’re coming” he says and join the group of teens.
We all wait in very awkward silence and I bounce my led to the tune of The Four Horsemen by Metallica until there is a ding coming from the elevator. I look up to see two girls walking in and my eyes widen. The first stops in her tracks as soon as she sees me but I can’t hold her gaze. It’s Ororo. I hear another voice ask “Ororo are you alright?” I look up to someone I didn’t recognize from the battle and we lock eyes.
Ophelia’s POV:
The elevator doors open and Ororo and I step out and walk towards the training area. Ororo is a bit ahead of me but as soon as she steps foot in the room she stops. I look at her confused and ask her if she’s all right. When she doesn’t respond I follow her gaze to a boy our age with silver wings on his back and our eyes meet and my heart skips a beat.
The professor clears his throat and we all turn towards him, “I’m glad you’re all here, as you may have noticed we have a visitor” He begins. “Everyone, this is Warren Worthington, he will be joining us here at the institute. Now I know you all recognise him from the battle with Apocalypse, but I assure you he is not here to harm anyone. He has decided that he wishes to turn his life around and to do that he should start somewhere that will accept him, no matter what his gift is” he tells us, but the look on Scott’s face told him everything we all were feeling; unease and unsure. “Now I know some of you may have a past with Mr. Worthington, but that does not mean we won’t try to make amends, isn’t that right Kurt?” he asks. The blue mutant looks up and give a curt nod but won’t meet Warren’s or the professor’s eyes.
For a minute everyone is quiet and awkward glances at the boy Warren are exchanged until we hear “Oh come on guys!” and we all turn toward Ororo in surprise. “You seriously being cautious around Warren when you all know that I worked with Apocalypse too!” she exclaims. We watch as she walks towards him, right pass the professor, Jean, and Scott who move out of her way. She holds out her hand, offering him a kind smile, “It’s good to see you again Warren” she tells him. He looks up at her a little confused at first and then smiles back at her, shaking her hand.
“Now, since everyone here wants to be awkward and rude, let me introduce you to everyone” she says leading him a bit closer to our group.”Warren, let me officially introduce you to the X-Men” she says. “You already know the professor, and I’m pretty sure you know who Mystique is” she says gesturing to the two of them. Raven cuts in, “Please call me Raven” she says holding out her hand which he takes. “The two that were in front of you earlier, that is Scott or Cyclops and Jean” she tells him, Scott nods in acknowledgement and Jean gives him a small smile. “This silver haired jerk is Peter or Quicksilver as he likes to be called” she says pointing at Peter, “Hey!” he gasps as if he’s offended, Ororo just rolls her eyes. “Hey man, sorry about the whole ‘fighting’ thing” Peter says, Warren is about to say something but Peter interjects “then again we were on two different sides and we kinda had to…..” he starts to ramble and I smack his arm “Ow! Ok sorry I’ll stop talking now” he says and I roll my eyes. “I think you know Kurt or, as you know, Nightcrawler” she says motioning at the mutant on my left. “And this is Ophelia” she says pointing at me. Warren meets my gaze and I feel my face start to heat up, “I-it’s nice to meet you” I say quietly, holding out my hand. He gives me a kind smile and nods “Yeah” he says. Out of the corner of my eye I see Ororo smirking at me.

As months past it seemed that everyone started to accept Warren more and more. We have study sessions as a group and train together, in fact it seemed that training and school drove us all closer as a group even if there was still some tension between Kurt and Warren. That also means that Warren and I spend more time together, not that I’m complaining. Other than Ororo and Peter, I was the Only other one that Warren hung out with outside our group activities.I helped him get caught up in classes and Ororo, Peter, and I showed him around the institute.
Ororo and I are sitting on the floor in my room with a puzzle spread out in front of us. Everyone seemed to be so busy today so it was just the two of. “So…” I hear her begin. I already know what she’s going to say because we’ve had this conversation a million times. “When are you finally going to admit to yourself that you like him?!” she exclaims and I sigh. I didn’t need to admit it to myself, I knew. I had fallen for Warren Worthington. Now coming to terms with the fact that he’ll probably never like me, that was different. “Oh come on Ophelia! We all see how you look at him! Why can’t you just say it?” she asks sitting up. “Oh my god Ororo! I don’t like him!” I tell her but even I could tell that wasn’t convincing
“Hmm well what about Kurt?” She asks. I look at and raise an eyebrow. What the hell is she talking about? “Umm what?” I ask and she scoffs. “Oh come on” she says “you’re seriously telling me that there is nothing between you can Kurt?” she asks giving me a look. I shake my head, “what in the world would give you that idea?!” I ask her a little shocked. Sure Kurt and I have gotten closer over the past few months but not in a dating sort of way, he’s one of my closest friends. In fact other than Ororo and Jean, Kurt is the only one I’ve actually told about my feelings for Warren.
“You’re kidding right?” Ororo asks, “There’s nothing going on with you two?” and I shake my head. “He’s like a younger brother to me” I tell her. She sighs and gives me a look, “Whatever you say Ophelia because to people don’t know that it looks like you two like each other” she tells me.

Warren’s POV:
I don’t think I’ll ever get used to walking into a library to study, it’s not like I did much of that in Germany. I walk in and I see some of the others but they all look preoccupied. Scott was following Jean around the library as she was shelving books. It looks like he’s trying to woo Jean even though he doesn’t need to, she clearly has feelings for him. Peter and Ororo were at a table in the far corner. From the looks of it, Ororo was not having a fun time trying to tutor Peter. I walk over to a table that was a few rows down from where Peter and Ororo were and got out my physics textbook, this is was going to take a while.
Around an hour later of sitting in silence and trying not to fall asleep I hear new voices enter the library. I look up when I hear the angelic laugh that only Ophelia was known to make and I smile. That is until I see who she’s with: Kurt. No matter where she is, she’s always with someone. Whether it’s Ororo and Jean, with Peter, or with Kurt, I never see her hanging out alone. It’s not that I care though, she can hang out with whoever she wants to.
They take a seat at a table a few rows away from me and I return to my homework. I turn the page of the book and try and focus but I can’t. It seems that every time I try to get some work done I here her laugh at something he says. I turn around and look at them and she’s laughing and smiling with him. And that’s when I snap. I slam my textbook closed and stand up. It’s clear my commotion caught the attention of some of the others because when I look up I see Ororo smirking and Peter giving me a thumbs up. I roll my eyes at them and make my way over to where Kurt and Ophelia are seated.
When I stand in front of their table they both look up at me. Kurt looks a little worries but Ophelia looks at me and give a kind smile. “Hey Warren, what’s up?” she asks. I huff, “Why him?” I ask her. Of all people she could have decided on it had to be him?! She looks at me confused and I roll my eyes at her. “Oh come on! You’re really going to try to deny what it clear to everyone? That you and him clearly have feelings for each other!” I say to her getting more upset as this continues. She looks really confused and both her and Kurt look at each other and then back to me. “Umm I think you have the wrong idea” Kurt pipes up and I glare at him. I turn back to Ophelia wanting an explanation. “Warren he’s right you have the wrong idea” she says, she sighs and grabs my hand, “Come on, let's go somewhere else to talk” she says and takes me out of the library and down an empty hall.
She lets go of my hand and leans against the wall. “I don’t like Kurt like that” she says crossing her arms, she won’t look at me. I take a deep breath, “You and him are always hanging out, even apart from the group, but it’s not like you and the girls” I tell her and she nods. “You’re right, we do hangout and it is different from Jean, ororo, and I hanging out” she says, “but it’s not what you think, Kurt… he didn’t have many friends when he first came here, to add to that he’s also not from America so that added another layer of separation he felt when he first got here” she starts to explain. “I started to help him with learning english and understanding our culture, he’s like a little brother to me” She says, “I don’t like him like that, I like someone else” she says and looks up at me. I take a few steps closer to her, “and who might that be?” I ask. I could see her take a breath in and smirk. “W-well I uhh” she stutters and looks down. I lift her chin so that she’s looking at me, “you’re really cute when you’re flustered” I tell her and she blushes. “I- I like you” she states and shuts her eyes as if she’s afraid of what I would say. I smile, “I like you too Ophelia” I say to her and she looks back up at me with wide eyes. I give her a smile and start to lean in, I look at her making sure this was okay. She nods and closes the gap between us.

So, Nioh
Overall I had a really enjoyable experience with it, I’d like to be able to try multiplayer but it’s a thing that’s kinda hard to get an organic experience of, PS+ aside.
The mission system is something I like to be able to replay stages/bosses that I enjoyed instead of having to wait for a NG+ cycle, the problem is that only a handful of bosses stand out, the final boss Kelley/Yamata-no-Orochi was kind of a letdown as a fight, Hundred Eyes was a cool design but a strange boss, I don’t think I’ll like it on NG++ when it turns into Touhou. The bosses I liked the most were something halfway between youkai and humanoid like Otani and Mitsunari.
Auxiliary abilities like Ninjutsu and Onmyo start out slow, but get more useful once you can stack skills to get more uses out of them, especially when you get the instant cast to be able to keep up buffs mid-fight. The slowdown talisman basically makes every boss a sandbag which is great for farming/stress relief.
The stance and skill system is what I like most about Nioh, player animations have actual discipline in them compared to a DS character, and it creates a higher skill ceiling of the R1 poke-roll to butt dynamic in a DS boss, for room to do stylish aggression with stance dancing and Ki pulses, on top of having a visible stagger break meter to know when to take advantage of it. I found high stance the hardest to use, it didn’t really increase stagger on high toughness NPCs, so it was more of a liability with its speed and ki cost. Though on Spear I preferred high stance, but things like low stance having a spinning pivot sidestep instead of a straight line dodge in mid? Really small things that I enjoy.
The game is very responsive, it doesn’t have queued inputs so you don’t roll after getting hit just because you were quarter of a second later, occasionally my item use inputs get eaten up, but its a lot less confusing managing items with Nioh’s control scheme (it’s very friendly)
The level design is amazing, having great setpieces and backgrounds use for dueling (Ohashi Bridge, Yomotsu Hirasaka, Azuchi Castle), and winding levels that have branching paths that lead to the same end, for different players with different means and attitudes, its very much like Dishonored’s excellent level design. I also like the sub-missions remixing the stage layouts. All in all, if DS level design can be compared to a metroidvania, Nioh feels like a more complex Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. It caused me some degree of frustration or confusion because I wanted to map out all of the areas in my head like I do with Dark Souls, but unfortunately I’m still not familiar with all of them, so I ended up running in circles or not knowing how to access some off-path areas.
My favorite weapon designs were the Douji-kiri Yasutsuna and the Hinomotogo, runner ups include the Tombo-kiri, Hozoin Jumonji Spear, Munechika Mikazuki (Gramps...!!), “Craneboy” Juzumaru Tsunetsugu, Raikiri, and the Furewakegami Hiromitsu. I haven’t gotten the DLC to try any of the Odachis.
The game’s aesthetic and approach, to me, make it more of a successor to Otogi, which was ironically made by From Soft before DS, but they have said before that their inspirations were taken from Onimusha as well as Diablo (the gameplay dynamic reflecting that strongly in particular) on top of DS. The levels didn’t have as much variance as DS in aesthetics, but they do hit all the right ones as a period piece.
For the player character being its own character, William was unfortunately underused and felt kinda boring, he mostly just reacts to stuff around him and doesn’t talk nearly as much in cutscenes as he ought to (when people are addressing him directly for instance), and him being the player character brings in some very traditional play of white savior tropes.
I thought that the naturally conclusion that Europe is trying to stir conflict around the world to create Amrita would set the stage for the sequel taking place during the Bakumatsu and the forced opening of the borders by the US to be for them to try and secure Amrita for themselves, and, in essence, have the player continue the fight after fighting for Ieyasu Tokugawa by fighting for his shogunate in the Shinsengumi against imperialists, but oh well, they’re obviously not taking that direction, as much as I’d have liked (probably because its hard to justify wearing armor for war in that age, among other things). The other idea I had would be to set it in the Heian period during the Genpei War.
Anyways, its understandable that the RPG elements aren’t for everyone looking for that masocore action experience, so I might be an outlier because I played MonHun for over 1000 hours and plenty of hours in CV HD and have minor experience with Diablo
I’ll just suck it up and buy the season pass now, I wanna build an odachi and stream the Osaka DLCs blind for yall since I get good bitrate on the PS4 now.

Rebalancing Guardian Spirits/Living Weapon, every GS felt useless or extraordinarily niche compared to Kato, the starter offensive GS. I really like the unique animations for LW but its really overpowered to build around it
In fact, the way the game handles its RPG elements, you don’t really build anything until you finish your first run through the game, which doesn’t really set in habits of what players should do with their equipment for the new difficulty, how to look for sets for their weapons, or guiding them through substat rerolling. Your build isn’t based on your stat allocation nearly as much as how you pick your armor set and give it the proper substat bonuses

hey so it’s been a while since i really wrote anything about games but recently i bought the Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 - ReMix - collection (not to be confused with Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue you silly goose) which is a collection of Kingdom Hearts, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II, Birth by Sleep and full cinematics for the two early DS games...that’s a lot of Kingdom Hearts...and because i only owned my first PS2 in 2013, i missed out on the whole Kingdom Hearts shabang! so let's document my first playthrough of the game that started it all; Kingdom Hearts! depending, i might write up a post about all the games as i play them and tell you all what a Birth by Sleep is but for now, let’s keep this Simple And Clean and start with the first game
(warning: spoilers for the game and full on rambling)
So there's a reason why I wanted to get into Kingdom Hearts, asides from Millenial Peer Pressure to understand what Simple And Clean means, cus there's one cutscene I saw from the second game where Goofy gets smacked with a rock and Mickey Mouse in a super hot topic zipped jacket gets really upset and the entire scene is both super melodramatic and absurd at the same time and I REALLY liked that. I really liked the idea of this crossover series from the two biggest giants of it's day, just going 100% extra and hopefully taking its premise to the next level...and it does.
Like, one of the first things you do in this game is meet Wakka from FFX and smack him with a wooden sword and there's a cutscene not further on where Aerith is having a serious discussion with Goofy and Donald Duck about a metaphorical darkness and...it's great. i'm going on about this aspect so much immediately because it's my favourite part of the game. the charm and the balance of touching tribute and ridiculous revelations that Kingdom Hearts achieves with merging its properties.
The actual game itself isn't the showstopper here but it's still worth talking about. It plays like a third person action game where you have all the bearings of it's Final Fantasy brethren with random encounters, leveling up, a party system and summons but the game doesn't load in and out of battles, you just get straight into a brawl on the map and there's no turn based battle system. I gotta give the team credit for wanting to make a different combat system than a lot of similar JRPGs at the time because it really helps give the series its own identity from minute one, with both the system and the keyblade weapon that you use to melee and cast spells with. At first it can be a bit jarring and hard to play. Sometimes the camera feels too tight behind Sora (the dude you play as) and processing the 3D space between you and the enemy can be a bit difficult to judge. Also the tightness means you'll get hit by off-screen attacks quite a bit more than you'd feel fair but once you start to get the hang of fighting through tough battles and slowly gain new spells, like a self heal, and a fuckin roll (!), it starts to click and becomes an enjoyable fighting system. The enemy variety in the game could've been upped to keep it more interesting in the later stages but it feels satisying to blow enemies UP with your keyblade (god I love the keyblade's design so much)...and it's hard not to admit the satisfaction of the one-on-one rival battles. When you're up against a dude the same size as you and he's got a melee weapon as well...it is Fire 100 Turn Up The BBQ.
It's a shame that those type of boss fights only really appear near the end because, for the first half at least, the boss fights aren't too great. The worst boss fights that show up in this game are the ones where the hurtbox of the enemy is on a head or a high part of their body, so as Sora you have to jump up and do an air combo at their hurtbox, hoping the hits connect or that you get your full combo out or the enemy doesn't move as you're jumping or the enemy just doesn't knock you out of it...but most of the time that stuff happens and it makes those boss fights some of the most annoying and unsatisfying. There's one boss fight in perticular, at the end of the Wonderland level, which is pretty much the first proper level of the game, that is really tall and his hurtbox is his main body which is propped up on two huge legs and trying to HIT IT is so tough. If you're on the ground, you have to make sure to jump and start attacking at the height of your combo otherwise you'll hit his legs which means that your attacks will literally bounce off him and you'll be flung to the ground. Even when I did get hits in on his body from jumping off the ground, i'd usually only get one or two hits in before I just hit the ground again and...that's not fun! There's a table in the middle of the arena you can climb onto that gives you a platform to jump off and smack him with but ONE that's just as annoying. having to keep climbing up this table to get three or four hits in, fall to the ground and repeat is bad and TWO the table is destructible by the boss! So he can just destroy it and make it even more annoying! Also he takes reduced damage from the 1 out of 2 spells you have at that time. Ahhhhh!!! And whilst no other boss comes close to being as annoying as that, there's still other bosses that use some of it's Anti-Fun Kata Techniques and they can be pretty unsatisfying.
Also some of the worlds in this game can be hit or miss. In Kingdom Hearts you travel between levels that, at most times, are Disney themed worlds like Neverland, Pumpkin Town and Olympus Collesium. Some of them are literally just 3 or 4 rooms, some are bland and some are downright barbaric like the Tarzan level that makes you travel up and down the level several times to trigger new cutscenes or events to progress the story and it can get really frustrating ESPECIALLY when the game doesn't make it all that clear where you need to go or what you have to do, so you're just hopelessly running around, entering in and out of buildings hoping something changes!
So okay, i've talked about what didn't work in this game BUT worry not, positive vibes are coming in the form of my early point; presentation! The game is a Disney and Final Fantasy crossover and the game's use of those licenses helps prop the game up massively. The Wonderland level, whilst not the most interesting level design wise, is propped up massively by just the very idea of it being Wonderland and everything that comes with it. Fun, colourful imagery! Gimmicks involving being huge and small! Twisted geometry spaces! A purple talking cat! Like the way they use their licenses to create these distinct, colourful, imaginative worlds with a diverse set of characters feels like cheating since they're using already existing brands but it's no lie that this all helps create a game that really feels like you're playing on this large Disneyland rollercoaster that shows you the world! And you're not just going by saying “I recognise the thing! I clapped!”, you're fuckinnnng in the thing! You're interacting with all the things! Sometimes you even kill the things and just twisting the properties onto their heads! Remember that time Clayton from Tarzan got fucking killed by a chameleon crushing him?? Yeah! Me too! It's rad!! Remember that time Hades from Hercules hired Cloud to kill you?? Yeah!! That's what makes this whole thing feel fun and worthwhile and not a simple nostalgia grab or whatever. Cus Disney gave them full license to do whatever they wanted and guess what W E D O I T said Nomura.
I also love how in certain worlds, aesthetics or even entire systems will change to match it. Like how in Little Mermaid level, you play it completely underwater. They could have made you stick to the bottom of the seabed and play it like a normal level or put you in a sub or whatever but they didn't, instead they change Sora and your parties models so you're a mermaid and you have to instead move using square and circle to go up and down through the water. That's cool! In the Neverland level, you get to fly like Peter Pan through the level and fighting flying pirate ships in the sky as you float is wonderful! And the part at the end where you go to a city level and you fly around the equivalent of Big Ben as the music swells up is one of my highlights from the game...cus it just FELT good in my hands. Even the smaller changes like Sora getting a new, gothed up, halloween costume for the Nightmare Before Christmas level is a cute touch! In a perfect world all of these changes would have happened for the majority of levels but alas.
There's also this Winnie the Pooh world that's probably my favourite. At a part of the game, you get a book that you can access and as you open the book, you find yourself walking around 100 Acre Woods and meeting Winnie the Pooh but the rest of the pages are missing. So as you go through levels, you find these pages for the book and for each page you get a new level of 100 Acre Woods that feels like a light, adventure where you're hanging around with Winnie the Pooh and friends. There's no combat in the levels, it's all just mini-games and talking with Pooh and the cast...and it's wonderful. Not only does it fit the tone of the license, cheerful fun, but the feel of the level from the writing and the adventures just feels...Pooh-like. And then when you get that last page and you get Pooh and all his friends together and they bid you farewell and the book closes to show a picture of Sora holding hands with Pooh...i got emotional man...i really did.
And then there's the other side of the spectrum, from fighting off tears over a really well done, careful use of it's properties to grinning like mad with tears of laughter at the ridiculous use of its property. Okay so like the end of the game is, the greatest. After you defeat the main bad guy (he was a scientist trying to use darkness for power blah blah), you get this scene where Sora and friends find the door to the Kingdom Hearts! The source of all hearts! And in it there are Heartless (the enemies) coming out of it so you have to go and close the door BUT doing it on your own isn't enough so you have to use the help of your friend Riku (he was a friend-turned-rival-turned-back to friend by the end)to shut it BUT! He has to shut it from the other side of the door which means locking himself in with the Heartless and the darkness within it. So he's basically gonna get fucked. And Sora realises this and after refusing to shut the door at Riku's request, he obliges and in an emotional moment goes to push it shut….BUT SHUT THE FUCK UP, DONALD DUCK PEEKS IN THE DOOR AND GOES “WUHHHHH” AND YOU NOTICE MICKEY MOUSE'S ICONIC EARS AND HEAD CAST A SHADOW AND IN AN EXTREMELY MICKEY MOUSE VOICE GOES “HEY SORA!” AND IT'S LIKE FUCKING AWESOME. FUCKING GREAT. EMOTIONAL MOMENT -DEFUSED-, PREY SLAUGHTERED CUS MICKEY MOUSE TALKED. I couldn't stop laughing the whole time and then mickey mouse shuts the door and all is saved. BUT THEN because of complications, Sora has to leave behind his childhood sweeheart Kairi that he saved to go back to her world whilst Sora gets left behind in wherever he is and then Simple And Clean, the main theme, just blast with its cheesy super early 2000's musical sheen as a closing FMV plays where Kairi is crying about missing Sora and everyone is all happy cus they get to see their friends again and it's so...innocent and perhaps naive at what it's doing but it fills me life man. I was singing the lyrics to this RnB track as I thought about the events that just occurred and seeing Pinnochio turn into a real boy and Cloud meet back up with Aerith and maaaaaaaan
That's why I really like Kingdom Hearts. The gameplay is generally fun despite some dips, there's some rewarding treasure hunts despite the level design being bland….on a purely Game perspective, it isn't that special and is probably worse than other 3D platformers of it's time BUT where it really shines and where the charm gets to me in this game is just how much it celebrates and lets you engage with it's crossover. Whether it's trying to evoke a feeling of sadness at a childhood gone by or drama through laughable scenarios involving Disney and Square Enix characters...it's just got real charm and i'm so happy this game exists. I'm even happier that it was successful enough to spawn an entire franchise that still has young kids and grown adults getting hyped for it's next installment. It's a weird kinda magic that I don't think any other game or series has fully replicated. Will the charm wear off I play through more and more of these games? I dunno, we'll see...but for now, Kingdom Hearts, thank you for being really Goofy.

Choosing the Right Relationship
Most people put more thought into choosing a car than choosing a romantic partner.
When I ask the couples I see in therapy what drew them to each other, out of the hundreds that I have seen, the most common answers are physical attraction and some indication of ease. Things like “We talked for hours,” or “I felt comfortable with him,” or “she was nice.” While these things are pleasant, and may give some indication of initial fit, it is clear that very few of these partners have given much consideration to potential strengths and weaknesses in a mate, much less what their own are, and how those two go together.
Many make a “lifetime commitment,” and then seal it with the permanence of having children, with very little reflection until they come into therapy on the brink of divorce. At this point they are usually blaming each other for the other’s negative qualities, which they actually knew about from the beginning but denied to themselves and each other. (And BTW, couples therapy has a much better chance if you come in when problems are starting rather than when you’re both almost out of hope.)
In fact, frequently those negative qualities are variations of the very same qualities they initially liked in each other. One of the most common pairings is an expressive, dynamic person with a quiet, seemingly calmer partner. The dynamic person likes the reserved steadiness of the quieter one, while the quieter one enjoys the excitement of the dynamic one. Over time however, the dynamic partner can grow resentful of the quiet one’s withdrawal and unresponsiveness, whereas the quiet partner feels hurt by the expressive partner’s criticism and accusations. This is just one of millions of possible examples.
Not to say that ease and comfort with a new person are bad, but they also may indicate something else that many people don’t think about, which is a kind of unconscious familiarity associated with early childhood patterns.
Many times it is only later in relationships that we realize that the person we picked actually has some similar traits to our father or mother — and often traits that are difficult for us to tolerate. They are difficult to tolerate precisely because they were the very same traits that were problematic with our parents! In the courting and honeymoon phases of the new relationship we can be drawn to the comfort of the familiarity, without fully appraising or anticipating the downsides.
It is said that people seek similarity, but it’s also said that opposites attract. I believe both are true, but usually in different dimensions. People often are attracted to others who share common interests but have complementary personalities. By that I mean something like what I described earlier, such as one person more expressive, one quieter; one more social, one more of a homebody; and so on.
I believe that the significance of common interests is overrated. A paucity of common interests gets blamed when relationships go south, but they are rarely the central problem. Nonetheless, it is good to have some — mostly in terms of having enough in common that there are things that you enjoy spending time doing together.
The more important domains to consider are personality and values, and when it comes to personality, the key question is how does your potential partner handle stress.
During the honeymoon period, or when things are relatively carefree, you won’t have as much chance to assess this, except in glimmers. But everyone has coping mechanisms that they resort to under stress, and they may not be pretty. Blaming, becoming defensive, withdrawing, trying to fix things or telling others what to do, over-eating or under-eating, and denial are just a few. (Of Course, there are better coping mechanisms, which I model in my other articles, but you don’t have to worry about those!)
You will want to know what your prospective partner’s go-to mechanisms are and how well you tolerate those. By the same token, it’s good to know what your own are and how your partner will tolerate those! The best way to determine these things is to observe yourself and your partner under stress and see what the typical patterns are. That’s why it’s important to have enough experience together beyond the honeymoon period before making a long-term commitment, in order to see each other in a more realistic light.
As Dan Wile so wisely points out, there will always be some set of things that you’re not crazy about in any particular person you pick. No one is perfect (even though they may look that way during the initial attraction phase, or from the outside). Part of the trick is figuring out which set of problems you can accept the most. I won’t be able to exhaust all the categories and sub-categories here, but I’ll talk about some of the ones that come up most commonly in the couples I see. Beyond that, think for yourself about which problems in a relationship would be easier or harder to live with.
One potential shortcut to get an early preview of coping styles is to ask what was stressful for your partner in their childhood — especially before the age of 12 or 13 — and how did they cope. For example, if their parents’ fighting was stressful, did they try to intervene in the fight or did they try to slink away and avoid it. An intervener is more likely to be aggressive under stress, while the avoider is more likely to be passive or withdrawn.
Coping mechanisms developed early in life are apt to persist through life unless people do considerable work on themselves to change things, and even then it’s mostly a matter of moderation rather than eradication.
Some people will answer that they didn’t really have any stresses. Sometimes they really didn’t. But sometimes this can be a sign of a denying coping style because there actually were stresses but they keep them out of consciousness to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Also, some stresses — like emotional neglect or just low levels of emotional expression in general — can be fairly subtle and unrecognized as such.
So it’s important to think about personality variables, but another huge area of importance in choosing a partner is values. I’ve written more extensively about values in many of my articles (e.g., Cut to the Chase), but it definitely pays to clarify your values in the top content areas, make sure you’re in alignment on a majority of them, and that the differences you do have are not too polar. The top content areas are the ones that are always identified in the popular press as things people fight over, such as money, sex, parenting, housework and extended family (e.g., in-laws!). In each of these categories individuals will tend toward one side or the other and it’s best if you and your mate are in the same ballpark.
For example, with money it’s usually about spending vs. saving. Some people are frugal and concerned about saving for later, others want to seize the day and live for the moment. When it comes to parenting, the most cited conflict is between discipline and freedom. With sex, two dimensions stand out: intensity of desire (which practically speaking usually translates into frequency), and novelty vs. routine (or spontaneous vs. planned).
There are several organizing principles that overarch all the categories, and these are the ones that merge more into personality factors. I just mentioned one of them, which is novelty vs. security. Some people are more oriented to new experience: stimulation seeking, adventure, and the like. Others place a higher value on security and caution, which is expressed in desires for things like routine, planning, organization, and safety. This dimension describes another common personality pairing, which can roughly correspond to the expressive/quiet combination I talked about at the beginning, or may take other forms. These qualities may vary by context, but people generally tend to lean one way or the other. So a person who’s core orientation is more security-based will tend to be more frugal in the money arena, prefer predictable sex, and perhaps a more organized household.
With all of these value dichotomies, bear in mind that neither pole is good or bad — both are useful, and it’s more a matter of balance and agreement between the partners
Another central axis is togetherness vs. autonomy. Some people crave closeness (emotional and/or physical) and want to be with each other a lot of the time, while others need more time to themselves and value being able to make independent decisions. Again people tend to pair up at somewhat unequal points on this spectrum, but the further apart you are as a couple, the more work you’ll have to do to manage those differences.
Perhaps one of the most significant dimensions is what John Gottman identifies as meta-emotion, or how you feel about emotions. The basic difference here is whether you think emotions are something worth paying attention to and talking about, or not. If one partner is strongly in the attention-to-emotions camp and the other is not, that’s going to be more difficult. Bear in mind that those who don’t value emotions are less likely to be pro-therapy if the going gets tough.
A lot can be learned by investigating and observing both of your family cultures, since that’s where most of these values come from. People usually adopt the values of their family-of-origin (the family you came from) or they rebel against them, and sometimes it’s a mix with some values adopted and some opposed. And then some of the high-level, personality-related values like security/novelty may be a blend of acquired values (nurture) and temperament (nature). Genetics and the atmosphere of the family-of-origin each have their separate influences which can combine in different ways. For instance, genetic ADHD + adventurous parents = extremely adventurous, vs. genetic timidity + adventurous parents = mildly adventurous.
Generally, the most relationship-friendly partners will come from intact families where people may have disagreements but they treat each other respectfully and kindly, there is open and clear affection for one another, and there are no significant addictions or abuses (particularly on the parts of the parents). To the extent that these things are not present, more work or therapy may be needed in the relationship. By the way, excitement and attraction are something, but they are rarely the most significant criteria for a partner, and often get people in trouble. They get people in trouble because they distract you from the things that really matter.
If you have already chosen a relationship in which you have bigger differences on some of these dimensions, and things are difficult, you basically have two options. You can grow as a person in your capacity to accept your partner and work on bridging the differences, or call it quits and find another relationship that’s a better match. Therapy can help with either of those things.
The thing that doesn’t work is blaming your partner and waiting for him or her to change.
