Ariel gets married to an adult at the end of her original movie. Eric has likely been an adult for several years before the start of the movie, if we are going off of Grimsby's lines to him when he's giving him the statue.
GRIMSBY: Yes, I commissioned it myself. Of course, I had hoped it would be a wedding present, but... ERIC: (grabbing the telescope from Grimsby) Aw, come on, Grim, don't start. Look, you're not still sore because I didn't fall for the princess of Glowerhaven, are you? (Eric looks out the telescope for a second before tossing it back to Grimsby, who catches it clumsily.) GRIMSBY: Oh, Eric, it isn't me alone. The entire kingdom wants to see you happily settled down with the right girl.
I would beg for people to be at least as critical of the source material as they are of the lesbian fan art.
I will repeat, would it be helpful to have fan artists include the intended ages of the characters down whenever they're posting?
Isabela: Ariel! That's -
(a weed)
Ariel: 😀
Isabela: Pretty 😍 ✨️ 💖
#There are certain characters where if I draw them with anyone#Specifically with Snow White I get people yelling at me in both directions RE: her age#people think she's 13#people think she's an adult#she doesn't have a canon age#Ariel is 16 during the events of her first movie#but that movie also pairs her with an adult#and she moves out to live with him#I'm not really super comfortable with 16 year olds moving in with their adult boyfriends#And I know that I would not be getting the same backlash if the fan art was straight or even if the fan art was of two men in this fandom#I prefer to age Ariel up most of the time because I think that meshes better with her story#no one is saying you have to ship a thing#But I would beg people to consider why exactly they react negatively towards lesbian fan art before posting#it's okay to not like a ship because it breaks up your OTP or breaks with how you envision characters#you don't need to justify it by saying that a queer person is being gross towards children#that's an incredibly dangerous accusation#and is levied against queer people on a regular basis by homophobes#we don't need to internalize that same level of homophobia
