Spanish v Catalan Language - My Curiosity

Before coming to Barcelona, I had always wondered 1) why locals spoke Catalan instead of Spanish and 2) how this would work in terms of me not knowing much Spanish, let alone Catalan. What sparked this journal entry was a news article titled, “Locals Expect Newcomers to Learn a Bit of Catalan Out of Politeness.” In this entry, the language secretary of Barcelona was saying how it is ignorant and mainly impolite to expect others to conform to your international ways of speaking when Catalan is their normal. What I found extremely interesting is that in order to become a Spanish citizen, which is what would apply to Catalonia, you need to know Spanish. However, as of right now, Catalan is not a requirement to know. The language secretary is not saying that one needs to become fluent in Catalan or even know how to speak it, but rather to learn important and essential statements and vocabulary to be able to communicate. I very much agree with this as this is their culture and how the people in Barcelona communicate, and because of that, I have been trying to pick up on some of Catalan myself!
