Celebrating 20 Years of Empowering Kids Through Design: The New Doernbecher Freestyle Collection

NIKE, Inc. is celebrating 20 years of collaboration with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Doernbecher Children’s Hospital by launching its 20th Doernbecher Freestyle collection, featuring footwear reimagined by courageous patient-designers.

This year’s collection showcases six striking styles, each crafted through a unique partnership between Doernbecher patients and Nike volunteer product experts. The shoes will be auctioned and sold to benefit the hospital, contributing to a signature fundraiser that has raised an impressive $37 million since its inception in 2004. All profits go to the OHSU Foundation, helping to fund care for families in need, support specialized treatments not available elsewhere in the region, and expand pioneering research that benefits children worldwide.

The young designers of this year’s Doernbecher Freestyle collection are passionate athletes who love basketball, soccer, and various other sports, as well as kids who are inspired by dragons, cats, and music. Their interests have been channeled into inspiring footwear styles, adorned with intricate details, hidden messages, and unexpected color palettes that reflect their life experiences, medical journeys, and personal relationships.

A fresh addition to this year's collection is the custom split-open box packaging that reveals each design in a splash of excitement. Additionally, a Nike Tech Fleece hoodie, incorporating elements from each of the patient-designers’ shoes, will be included in the collection.

In a special tribute to the 20-year milestone, a limited run of Doernbecher Air Jordan XX sneakers featuring a tapestry of laser graphics celebrating the collection’s legacy and the 122 patient-designers will be available at auction. Twenty numbered pairs of the Air Jordan XX “Doernbecher Freestyle” will be exclusively offered at Sotheby’s, with all proceeds going to benefit Doernbecher. Each pair will come with a T-shirt and Nike Tech Fleece bomber jacket featuring the special-edition laser print.
