i just scrolled through my blog and i realised i have only two modes: weird pseudo-philosophical rambling. and absolutely unhinged yelling. AND I TELL YOUUUU IT'S SO FUNNYYYYYYY because i spent so long trying to curate my voice and sound like a normal, fun, easy to approach person back when i first made this blog!

then again it's been 3.5 years so i guess my voice changed naturally 🤨 i'm not smart enough for this 😮‍💨

So I'm new here and was hoping for some help. I really love how organised your profile is. How did you organise it? And how do you customise your profile and also decorate your post? I know nothing about Tumblr

Hi!! I'm still totally winging this, but here are some of the things I've learned through trial and error. Sorry in advance, this will be a little all over the place.

A special theme isn't necessary for your blog. A lot of people like it and special themes are certainly pretty, but I feel like sometimes it makes it hard for others to navigate it. So I just changed the colors and photos for my blog.

If you're posting content, things like an about me and masterlists are super helpful to people when they want to navigate your blog. And if you're accepting requests, a request guideline sheet is super helpful to not have to keep turning down posts. I'm still working on that part, fleshing out what I will or won't write for. (Like I said, totally winging it.)

For reactions, I do very little formatting. Just some bolding, adding a header, and adding a cut in the post to Keep Reading. I constantly use a Keep Reading because it helps with scrollability, particularly if you aren't interested in reading something. Or, if the topic of the post is sensitive, it keeps others from seeing things they aren't ready to see.

For my about me and masterlist images, I used canva. It's pretty straightforward. I use the app on my phone to pick a template and redesign it however I want (pick font styles, change backgrounds, etc.). Then save it to my camera roll and drop it into the post. I do the same thing for headers on my long fics.

Speaking of masterlists - NESTED MASTERLISTS!! Tumblr has a limit to how many links you can add (I think it's 100?). I'll have to rework mine eventually when I reach that limit, but I did nested masterlists to buy myself some time.

I learned the hard way, but if you want to do a header image, it's much easier to start the draft of the post as a photo post. You can put text below the image like normal. But if you start a text post and try to insert an image, the editor is kind of finicky.

I recently started using dividers to separate scenes in my longer fics. It's more aesthetically pleasing and there are a lot of wonderful creators that make dividers on here. If you search dividers, you'll find a plethora of options. I save the image of the divider I like and then insert it into the post between scenes. A lot of these creators prefer that you like or reblog their post to indicate that you saved or used it. I've started tagging them in the masterlist for the story as well.

Tag your posts!!! This is the only way people will find you. If you post things without tags, they sort of go into the ether. I recommend tagging things in a variety of ways because everyone uses different search criteria. Ex. I use seventeen, svt, seventeen x reader, svt x reader, etc. Same with idol names. If you write that sort of content, you might want to use their first name, their full name, and their stage name if different. You never know how someone will search for something.

I highly recommend posting longer works on the browser. The app is great for scrolling, but there are limitations to the editor there. Like, I don't think you can save draft posts on mobile? Could be wrong, but I've lost some work on mobile and have had to wait until I'm home at my computer.

Queuing and scheduling posts have made my life so much easier. The queue feature lets you drop draft posts into a stack and set how many posts you want to go out a day and when. You can also schedule posts outside of the queue. Ex. I've started pushing out parts of longer fics every few days and I want to keep it outside of the queue. The queue and scheduling system isn't perfect and you have to monitor it, but I can push out content every day without having to directly interact with it while I'm at work or doing something else.

This is absolutely not a requirement because it costs money, but I invested in a writing app called Ulysess. It does markups so I can actually format everything there rather than in the tumblr editor. Programs like word, google docs, and pages all suffice - I actually started with pages. But I mention it because it made my life so much easier.
