i feel like all i talk about is black coffee with you, but like, it’s my fave bucky fic of all time and i wanna know everything about it. so, my question is, how did you go about choosing which drinks to use in the fic? was there any certain significance to the plot or memories attached or was it solely based on personal preference?

okay so the answer is yes? both? it was a combination for pretty much every drink (or they have no meaning at all), so here's my comprehensive list for you:

black coffee: this was almost entirely for plot reasons. i needed a very pleasureless coffee order for him to be starting off with. the bare minimum, so she had the excuse to "educate him." it also played really well with the theme of choice, that this was the default, and he got to experiment and try new things now that he has both resources and autonomy. the other, weirder reason for this (and it being the title) is that the reason i wrote this fic was because i really wanted to write the moment where he finds her, which was so incredibly loosely based on another moment of a tv show character finding his kidnapped barista/waitress love interest and that character loved agatha christie. a tiny homage?

london fog, decaf: this one is more personal. the girl i liked in college (who also happened to be my best friend at the time), used to get me a london fog when i was having a panic attack day. the decaf part was strictly for conversation purposes. caffeine doesn't affect anything except my sex drive for me. and then he makes it for her too (or tries to at least).

iced vanilla latte: this drink in my mind is like one step above a coffee with milk and sugar. just the slightest elevation, but like definitely a solid drink? i felt like reader would take it easy on him to start.

mocha with oat milk: okay this is so dumb but mochas have a darker richer flavor so i felt like that went well with them starting to discuss darker things? her tragic backstory, his insecurities, etc. and the oat milk was my attempt to suggest a greater passage of time--he's trying milk alternatives!--but i doubt that landed lol.

cappuccino: bucky likes the sweet drinks. i decided. this drink was my victim for a softer moment of him making a choice, in lead up to matcha.

iced caramel macchiato: literally no meaning at all except bucky is sweet and this drink is sweet and i really wanted her to say "something sweeter for you this time"??

iced matcha latte: matcha is gross. i'm sorry. it tastes like grass which seems fitting because we also see bucky's growth here?? definitive choices and a smooch! and also plot. definitely plot. i can think of no other drink that could be compared to a sewer.

cold brew with sweet cream: something bitter with a splash of something sweet. a big sad bonding moment that ends very nicely. also i really wanted him to put whipped cream on her nose and kiss it off. i'm a whore for that shit.

rose latte: i mean this is so on the nose but he brought her flowers. also this is my drink so i had to get it in there somewhere.

mocha frappucc--: ah yes. the shattered blender. this was purely for visuals i think? the image of frappuccino splatter and glass and blood just seemed so dramatic in my mind. and it's cut off in the middle because the headers were supposed to resemble receipts kinda? or orders? and this one got interrupted.

-----: there is no coffee order for the scenes that she's gone. this was supposed to just be like and empty order tab. i couldn't think of a better way to do that lol.

iced vanilla latte with cinnamon + iced rose latte with oat milk: okay and our little epilogue moment. bucky's drink is a basic one, but with a little bit of a twist because he's making his own choices and trying new things. and reader's drink is just my drink because i wanted to and also because i wanted that last little jab with the soap.
