You know, fan fiction was invented so that you could rewrite that little voice in your head telling you the fictional character you love could never love you back because [blank reason].
Give it a try. Start writing. Go wild. Make endless meet-cutes, and fancy meeting you here's.
You never know, you might even end up finally learning to love [blank reason] about yourself in the process.

HEY TALK ABOUT YOUR LOVES
Ohohohoho.
My thoughts are more or less about the boys, BUT I feel like I also need to provide context because this series has been such a huge part of my life.
So, therefore, let's start at the beginning.
GOD THIS GOT SO LONG AND I AM SO SORRY BUT I HAVE A LOT OF THOTS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I have been part of the fanbase (not gonna say fandom, because that implies I'm active at all in the d//m//c "community" when I absolutely am not) since before 2010. That's 10+ years of enjoyment in this series. 10+ years I've been holding onto my feelings because I wasn't sure if it was right to love fictional characters. I still wrote and roleplayed with other people who were also in the fanbase, because... well, writing OC / Canon at the time was the closest anyone could get to saying "I want to date this character and not be judged." (But we all know that even then, if the OC wasn't written a specific way then they'd be considered a sue / stu; don't even get me started there.)
I fell in love with Dante first. He was the main character up until Nero starred in D//M//C4! So why wouldn't I love him? The first piece of media in which I really broke into the series was the anime and that's only because I really loved anime at the time (now not so much, mostly because I don't have attention span, etc). And boy... ohoho boy. I loved him even more. I think it's partly because that was my first real look into the series that I love D//M//C2 so much, because I'm more inclined toward the ""edgy"" side of Dante; wacky wahoo pizza man is cool and all, but I also love retrospective Dante who's a bit serious. Doesn't mean he's not the same Dante, because he absolutely is. But I hate how the fanbase portrays him sometimes. (The same fanbase that hates D//M//C2 and probably hates the reboot too, BUT I'LL TOUCH UPON THAT IN A MOMENT.)
The fact that Dante can be a serious person when he needs to be (or even if he's like... killed his brother several times and is therefore entering into a depressive state because who tf wouldn't) seems lost on a lot of people and it makes me sad. Because when I first really started branching into the fandom, I was (and still am) the same way... I just feel like 2Dante and Anime Dante are just... more relatable? So I lean toward them more than anything because I can understand them more? Because I too have depression and struggle with it? (By no means am I saying that 4/5 Dante don't have depression, I just think at that point he deals with it differently. I have a lot of headcanon there and that in and of itself is a whole ass different discussion. I also think discovering that Nero is Vergil's son / his nephew also helps him handle his depression as well, because "wow... at least I still have some part of Vergil left, even if it is only his kid" plays a bit role in how Dante recovers, BUT THAT'S JUST WHAT I THINK.)
I even think 3Dante has some level of depression going on, even thouh that's the start of the series and it doesn't really start going downhill until after those events. I mean, losing his mother at a young age and also thinking he lost Vergil until, SURPRISE SURPRISE, Vergil invites him to a "bash" which is really just some ploy to gain power? I just think at that point, it's manageable for him; he doesn't struggle with it nearly as much as he does in 2 + Anime. That being said, the fact that he's so """wacky wahoo""" also leads me to conclusion that, even if it is "manageable," he does still struggle at times and I feel probably overwhelms him at times, so he tries to manage BY being upbeat about things. Which, anyone who has depression knows, is so fucking difficult to do. The fact that Dante can keep going despite all this shit going on in his life makes ME feel like I can keep going.
AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON VERGIL AND HIS PROBLEMS. Dude just wanted to be protected and loved.
Actually, LET ME get started on that. Because I have a lot of thots.
Vergil grew up believing their mother chose Dante over him. That she didn't try to save him. That Dante was more important to her than he was. He grew up with this inferiority complex because he didn't know WHY their mother never came to save him. He also grew up thinking he wasn't strong enough to save HER. That's why he actively sought out power, while believing humans were "weak." That's why he manifested this hatred for being half-human. Because he couldn't save his family and, for a long time, he was led to believe his mother didn't care for him nearly as much as she cared for Dante (IE. "saving" Dante, but not Vergil).
Vergil's thirst for power is just misdirected feelings toward his family. He should've been mad at demons for attacking them in the first place, but because he grew up believing what he did, it became hatred toward humans instead. That's why he hated Dante, too. In reality, I don't think he really "hates" Dante, just feels severely inferior (which he veils by """having""" a superiority complex instead of the opposite, which he actually has). I think he just had a lot of conflicted emotions that he was never able to work through. Which is why I love the idea that he and Dante, post-D//M//C5 could reconcile at some point. Because neither of them really hated each other, they just had conflicting viewpoints due to one event that go thrown out of proportion somewhere along the way. Vergil just wanted what Dante had, which he perceived as the love of their mother, because she "chose" to save Dante instead of him. In reality, she tried to go after Vergil too, but simply didn't survive. Vergil was entirely unaware of this, so obviously he'd be upset. It's the crux of all his problems.
Vergil HIMSELF even theorises what would happen if they switched places that day! He wonders what would happen if he and Dante's lives were swapped! (Which, TBH, would be a pretty neat AU, heheheheh.) Legit! "If our positions were switched... would I have your life? And you mine?" DUDE WANTED TO KNOW!!! He wanted to know what it was like to BE Dante, to be LOVED, to be PROTECTED by the ONE PERSON they had in their lives at the time! They only had their mother, so OF COURSE Vergil would be upset due to the circumstances! HE JUST WANTED TO BE PROTECTED AND LOVED.
3Vergil doesn't show much of this side of him, because he's just angry and going through a lot and he JUST wanted to be powerful enough that no one could hurt him any more. He would NEVER say this, but dude....... You cannot convince me this dude just wanted to be powerful to keep himself safe. To feel like he finally would've had enough power to protect the people he loves AND himself. He just didn't want to be hurt again. This is, by NO MEANS, an excuse for his actions. It's an explanation. His actions shouldn't be excused because of his ~ f e e l i n g s ~, but I firmly believe that post-D//M//C5, he could redeem himself for these actions. For everything he's done, he can realise it's wrong. He can grow to be a better person. He can reconcile with Dante and even be a good father to Nero. He can be better and I want to believe that he WOULD be better. After everything V went through, discovering that he doesn't really want to be the person he used to, Vergil can change and be better.
OOFIES. This has gone on long, BUT I STILL HAVE THOUGHTS ABOUT THE REBOOT BOYS THAT I STRUGGLE TO PUT INTO WORDS, SO BEAR WITH ME IF THIS SEEMS STUPID OR GARBLED.
Context for the reboot: It's basically a remake of the series that got poor reception because people struggle to accept change. :) I will not debate this and anyone who wants to come at me can eat my socks.
Dante 2.0, like original Dante, HAS PROBLEMS. He's an edgy punk bitch who has problems and he's so ugly I love him.
This dude went his entire life struggling with his identity as someone "human." At one point, he was so convinced he didn't have a heart that he ripped open his own chest to see if he did. Yeah. Dude has issues. But it's ok, because in game, he legitimately sets aside his own issues with people to save humanity. Dude's got such BDE.
People hate him, but I feel like they fail to realise what the hell he's been through. He's been through just as much shit as original Dante. Same goes for Vergil 2.0. These boys have been through SO MUCH, but people don't see that because "Nooo!! You can't just remake the series!!!" Meanwhile I'm like "hehe handsome nephilim boys go brrr."
I literally cannot begin to explain the amount of hate people have for the reboot and it makes me sad, because... like.... y'all.... don't realise... these dudes... went through so much shit..... and yeah... I get it... remake bad, original good, but dude.... my dude.... my bro.... you do not have to hate it that much.... calm down, it's just a video game....
My dude Dante grew up in the system because the foster homes and shit he got placed in were run by demons!!! So he'd lash out at them!!! He was violent because demons suck!! They killed his mom and enslaved his dad!!! Imagine!!! Being surprised by that!!! When you know what he went through!!! Damn, couldn't be me!!!
Vergil went through some shit too!!! Like!!! Yeah, he was adopted into a rich family and lived a pretty cushy life, but fact of the matter is!!! Their parents died and they had their memories WIPED when they were kids!!! Imagine!!! The distraught!!! When he (since he found out who he was long before Dante did) realised what had happened!!! When he remembered!! When he discovered he wasn't human!! My dude founded a whole ass group of demon hunting hactivists because he knew demons sucked and wanted to make the world a better place. It wasn't until after Mundus (big stinky demon man) died that he started realising how frail humans could be and decided to be an asshole about it.
I'm so sad that there will never be any more about the reboot, because fans decided to be assholes about it. I'm so sad that we'll never learn more about what happened to those boys. I'm so sad that we'll never be able to see whether they reconcile or even have the opportunity to.
Alas, I have to rely on heavy headcanon and personal re-write of the story to fix canon instead. :<
#dlselfships#c.txt#WHAT DO I TAG THIS AS????#ANALYSIS???#ITS NOT SHIP BS SO CANT USE THAT TAG BUT UHHHHH#analysis bs#ok sure good enough#LONG POST#IM SERIOUS THIS POST IS SO LONG AND I AM SO SORRY#I JUST HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT THEM#dan.te#ver.gil#dante 2.0#vergil 2.0#AAAAAAAAAA NO ONE HAS TO READ ALL OF THIS BECAUSE HONESTLY ITS JUST SOME STUPID THOTS I HAVE AND THEY KINDA SUCK???#also you can tell im SOOOOOO BIASED when the reboot stuff comes in#oofies i loved the reboot and as soon as i saw the first trailer i was like!!! hehe hot man go brrr#even tho i KNEW people would hate it#but hey here i am.... still loving my reboot boys....

hope everyone is staying safe through this quarantine. wash your hands.
Which band do you have more music of than anyone else on your computer? Ozzy. Who’s your favorite philosopher? *shrugs* I don't know any's ideals well. How old were you when you learned how to read? I'm not sure, but I know I was exceptionally young. What’s the coolest Halloween costume you’ve ever worn? I don't think I've ever worn something rather cool. Who’s your favorite painter/artist? If we're talking about well-known, "popular" artists, I'm not sure. Maybe DaVinci. What’s your favorite song lyric- ever? ARE YOU??????????? FOR REAL?????????? Holy FUCK I get goosebumps from lyrics SO easily, this is like impossible. Probably an Otep lyric, though. I really don't like her personally, but goddamn can she write. What’s your dream tattoo if you don’t have it already? I've linked it before, so I'll just remind it's "Denialism" by deviantART's NukeRooster on my entire, upper left arm. I've already gotten her permission (I don't like just... stealing artwork to put on my body), now just comes the day I can pay for it by a top-tier pro. What’s the coolest screen name you’ve ever had? I don't think any have been necessarily "cool." Who do you think was the most badass serial killer? (Real life.) I'm not well-versed in serial killers honestly, but I can say Charles Manson was a C A S E. I think we can all admit he was... interesting. Just the epitome of weird. Most badass fictional serial killer? ig Jason; again, I don't know a lot off the top of my head, but I like him. How many bank accounts do you have? I don't have one. Have you ever been falsely accused of starting drama? Yep. Have you ever found a song that describes your whole life? Parts of it, sure. What kind of car do you drive? Would you rather go out to eat or stay in? I prefer eating out because yummy food, but considering I'm working on losing weight, I avoid it. Do you have any younger siblings? One. Have you ever considered bleaching your hair? To the point of being snow white. Considering my hair is super healthy and bleaching so heavily would destroy it, I'll be avoiding that. I DO want to bleach my hair to do other colors, though. Brown hair sucks. Do you drink vitamin water? No. Are there any old movies you absolutely love? Oh sure, a good handful. The Outsiders probably tops it. Have you ever had a Big Mac before? No, doesn't appeal to me. I don't like veggies on my burgers... despite eating veggie burgers when I was vegetarian lmao. Do any of your friends have children? Yep. Is there anything you’re craving right now? Not really. Who got married at the last wedding you attended? A family friend. It was the second wedding I shot. Is happiness something to be achieved and sought after or is it something to be retained and held onto always, no matter what happens? The former. You can't just stay happy when, like, your grandma dies. What gives you a peaceful feeling? Nature. Hearing water and birdsong, specifically. Are you a Toys-R-Us kid? Hell yeah I was. My sisters and I would go crazy if we had the chance to go there. We were SOOOO upset when it closed down. If you believe in Heaven, are there separate heavens for different animals (kittie heaven. dog heaven, bird heaven, etc)? I don't know if I believe in a "heaven," but some sort of peace after death, yes. I believe it's one, unified "heaven." When you sleep next to someone do they fall asleep first usually or do you? They always do considering it takes me ten years to fall asleep. If they do, do you watch them sleep? I have. Not in a creepy way, but rather a "wow I love this person" sorta way. What is your usual breakfast? Usually apple and cinnamon oatmeal What do your salt and pepper shakers look like? They're nothing special. The salt is a blue ceramic, and the pepper one is just what you get from the store. Have you ever had your car towed? I've never had my own car. What band or singer do you believe started rock and roll? I'm pretty sure Elvis is given that credit. Whose voice irritates you like fingernails on a blackboard? The female singer of Mother Mother's voice. Mom and I can't stand her singing. All I songs we enjoy feature almost solely the main singer. I can *tolerate* it in some songs, but. What do you contribute to society? Ha. Do you take naps? Almost daily. Do you have any cavities? Not to my knowledge. Do you believe that there has been a man on the moon? Yes, though I do believe the "first" landing was faked in competition with Russia. It sounds ridiculous, but I'm so serious, look into the theory - there's incredible evidence. Would you ever go into a sex shop? I'd be too self-conscious to. I'd just order online. Let’s just say your school team is on a winning streak. One of the cheerleaders cheers both for your team and the other team during games. Does it make you angry? I don't care enough about sports to even consider how I'd feel. Do you prefer carnivals, festivals, circuses, parades or faires? To be real, I only know the difference between parades and circuses. What even distinguishes the other three from each other. Do you believe in psychic ability or is it a sham? I lean towards no. What is your favorite classic rock song? You CANNOT ask me this question. Classic rock is some of the best music there is.

The Feud breakdown theory
TLDR: Its basically one big Klance-centric episode, this whole theory’s probably a reach but its nice lol. Reposted from my twitter. More under the cut!
Lets start off this thread by pointing out one of the glaring things that immediately hit me once I started watching this episode when it aired: the title sequence. I'm not particularly old but my parents have always loved gameshows and reality television.
They would watch it in the living room and so one of the things that stuck out to me the most was how the logo for Garfle Warfle Snick is visually similar to "The Dating Game" which was a 60's TV show centered around a bachelorette picking out a guy to take out on a date.
Even the dang flowers.....
It was at this moment I thought "well, after being basically deprived of any Klance scenes for 3 seasons, you'd think S7 would bring you some of that and boy oh boy I've been fed so well. I think its strange for them to visually replicate a DATING GAMESHOW logo. We know for a fact that they were going for a family feud esque style, so why didn't they just replicate the Family feud logo instead? The vibe of the entire episode would change because it'll be a glaring reference.
Going back to Kaplan's tweet about how things aren't what they seem, the Feud really, like, obviously lets you know, that things really aren't what they seem. The story shifts in focus and tone and so do the characters.
My theory is that this episode foreshadows events to come that even the paladins never knew were even challenges themselves.
I believe this sort of aids the Klance fight theory (graciously written by Ca HERE) because that altean colony which they believe was a win for them to discover, could possibly be their next challenge (their garfle, becomes a warfle)
We also know that it isn't new for Voltron to use the "it was an altean all along!" as shock value for their enemies but at this point, I think Allura's starting to learn that her race is equally capable of evil.
This adds to the idea that during the 3 year gap, there's a possibility that the altean colony and Haggar/Galra have been working together to develop new technology (Hunk: I've never seen the Galra use weapons like these before) because clearly it isn’t the olkari helping them.
Time for my biggest reach yet, how the fuck is that a chopstick lance. You can recognise a mullet for a hundred feet away but you can't recognise a sword at point blank. Strange considering Keith drew out the sword pretty quickly, so there's no way Lance saw chopsticks.
NOTHING in this image screams chopsticks. I even went and printed out this god forsaken screencap and tilted it to see if it looked like chopsticks from a far angle and nope, still looks like a blade. This one's a reach but, chopsticks are insinuate a "yin-yang" dynamic.
Chopsticks is a strange pick because it doesn't LOOK anything like a chopstick. It would have made more sense to call it a shovel, paper fan, knife, surfboard etc. Go off. Chopsticks have always been used as a pair, one cannot exist without the other, which brings me to voltron's wings. I like the idea of Voltron being similar to Darling in the Franxx because of their mecha designs kinda taking reference from Evangelion. This is a reach definitely, but its cute whatever, eat this up. There's a mythical bird called "Jian" and it only has one wing.
The bird can only exist with another of its kind, where together, they can fly and soar. Wings and duality are symbols that have ALWAYS gone hand in hand, simply because there are two. Chopsticks being Lance's stupid fucking word choice is so damn specific its hurting me.
HERE'S ANOTHER REACH Y'ALL, the reason why chopsticks are thicker and circular at the top but thinner and squared at the bottom is because they represent the heaven and the earth. WHERE'D THEY COME FROM Y'ALL. WHERE DID THE PALADINS GO? UH? BACK TO EARTH YEA?
And once again, Keith draws this one very quickly so it does show that Lance can make a good guess immediately. I can see why he would say Dog here. SO WHY COULDN'T YOU SEE A BLADE AT FIRST LANCE? EXPLAIN YOURSELF. MOVING ON FROM THE DAMN DRAWING GAME.
I think these two screenshots speak for themselves. Earlier this morning I wrote a theory about how the Klance dynamic is all over the place because Lance has grown as a person in his absence and he's confused as to how he's supposed to behave towards "new keith".
He takes a jab at Keith throughout the start of this whole episode
"Not my fault keith can't draw!"
"I'm not a mind reader!"
So once again, its the usual bickering coming from Lance, but we see that shift later in the episode, I'll get to that later.
The next game with bii boh bi. Funny to me how the game's called "The Garflator" when we've already established that "Garfle" means to "win". The monster isn't the Garflator as they've misleaded, its the tank.
If you don't believe me, here's the subtitles literally calling the monster the "Warflator". Strange isn't it? You miss these things when you watch it the first time. Bob wasn't joking when Warfle and Garfle were interchangeable.
I don't really want to analyse how Bii Boh Bi acts throughout the whole segment mainly because I think that's reaching a little too far, and it was likely comedic the entire time, but I can't help but notice that his tone throughout suggests a "fill in the blanks" situation.
My theory is that this situation foreshadows the possibility that someone will help Lance fill in the blanks, and guess what the answer is in the GARFLator. He might even really be running out of time so again, stick it out till the last episode of S8.
Bonus: Seems like its pretty nice isn't it. Our crops are watered and his skin is cleared. Joking of course, but overall the whole Garflator/Warflator situation keeps getting mixed up together that's why I think this theory's reaching but I digress.
Time for the scene that made all of us Klancers scream into the depths of hell. We all already know that they didn't have to vote for each other if it was meaningless, but after seeing the recent surplus of Lance being hurt by Keith leaving, I've got a solid theory.
Lets look at the scene first, mainly at Hunk and Pidge's faces. We know Hunk is emotionally observant while Pidge behaves logically, so I think when we're speaking logically: Lance picking Keith seems HIGHLY illogical to pidge.
Lance "hates" Keith. Why pick him to survive? THE MATH DOESN'T ADD UP. On the other hand, Hunk's facial expression here seems more....worried? Not confused. There's been substantial evidence that Lance was hurt by Keith leaving, and if he spoke to anyone about it, it'd be hunk.
I think Pidge is surprised to hear these things come out of Lance's mouth and seeing Keith pick him. Remember when they all picked someone to help Lance? The braniest of the team? I think honestly Pidge might be the first to pick up on their possible affections towards each other.
This sort of parallels the earlier scene where Lance was the last one to figure out Pidge was a girl, but maybe that's reaching a little too hard (Curse these short arms!)
Earlier this morning I wrote a thread about how Lance picking Keith to leave here is probably the nail in the coffin that he deeply cares about Keith. Remember, this situation would probably be the third time that Keith has left Lance.
Read the linked thread, I won't reiterate it here but basically Lance grows in Keith's absence, stepping up when he needs to, but its not really what he wants. Losing Keith again might be devastating, but that only heightens why this scene is so affectionate. He makes this choice himself.
He calls Keith the future because he has faith in his skills (he's our leader) and him as a person (plus he's half galra). That Keith HAS a future. This is SIGNIFICANT because the only other person that has said that they have faith in Keith, was Shiro.
Shiro is VALUABLE to Keith, he's the most important person in his life. Having people believe in him has always been difficult and I think where Lance says (although cryptically) that he believes in Keith, is really where their new dynamic takes off.
THAT's why Keith behaves somewhat coldly in S7, because its never gonna be easy for him to suddenly accept a new person in his life. He’s not sure how he should react to another person caring for him. Both of them know their dynamic isn't what it used to be, they can't joke and jab anymore. We're back to square one, but its different this time.
One last thing about this episode (that isn't Klance related) is Luxia's kingdom, just a fun quick thought that maybe the Baku might be back, i mean he never really was defeated, just trapped. ;)
Uhhh that's it! Can't think of anything else haha. Thanks for the wild ride friends, I hope these feed your optimism for today~ Again, they're all just theories but I hope S8 is a good experience for everyone! Have a great day :)
One last thing: I would love it if Klance happens and the theories prove true, and if it doesn't its okay! Sure I'll be disappointed, but its fine if I'm wrong about a fictional TV show lol.
#klance#keith#lance#vld#vld theory#klance theory#i think this was a nice theory#i worked hard on it pals uwu

Review: Kendrick Lamar - Damn.
Strap in folks. We’re talking about Kendrick Lamar again... This is gonna be a long one.
It's official. Kendrick Lamar just went pop and this album has sent the music world into a frenzy. I've made a point of riding out the hype because of all the noise on twitter that came with it. I was extremely excited going into this thing too and wanted to make sure my true thoughts weren't guided by the internet's endless praise machine. I was listening to it though. Late thursday night I got a fresh tank of gas and spent the next hour riding out to it. I was instantly wowed.
The concept for this album comes in two parts. In the first part, death sneaks up on Kendrick. He's shot and, as he's dying, he spends his final moments believing he's been damned to Hell.
"Wicked or weakness?!" He cried in the music video for Humble. "You gotta see this." This is important because DAMN features Kendrick confessing to his many of his earthly sins and we’re the judge.
In the second part of this concept, (revealed to us on DNA) we learn more about how Kendrick has structured this record when he raps:
"Bitch, your hormones prolly switch inside your DNA. Problem is, all that sucker shit inside your DNA."
DNA, as we know, forms a chain and comes in two parts forming the double helix. Kendrick covered this ground already on TBAP with the tracks U and I. This duality also exists between the butterfly and the caterpillar. They are completely different yet one and the same, just like the different sides to Kendrick himself. He's a Gemini, who has two first names, and is rich despite being raised in a ghetto. A walking contradiction, an oxymoron just like King Kunta.
The "sucker shit" he's referring to are all the sad songs that weave this album together with all the bangers like... well... DNA. One always follows the other. They are two halves to the same whole.
On YAH, Kendrick throws away his blackness to follow Yahweh, a God only marginally different from his own Christian God.
"I'm a Israelite, don't call me black no mo'. That word is only a color, it ain't facts no mo."
This calls to mind, for me personally, how people kill in the name of religion despite the fact that all religions carry similar practices anyway. The Israelites are lord's chosen people while also being cursed on earth. Black and White, Christian and Jewish, Wickedness and Weakness. The value in these (seemingly) different attributes we assign others are really only worth what we choose. "You decide. Are we gonna live or die?"
Kendrick then proclaims on the very next song, ELEMENT.
"Cuz it’s all in your eyes. Most of y'all tell lies. Most of y'all don't fade. Most of y'all been advised last LP. I tried to lift the black artists but it's a difference between black artists and wack artists."
Here Kendrick is warring within himself over that "sucker shit" again. He refuses to fall into a what he now views as a vile mentality.
"They won't take me out my Element. Nah, take me out my Element. Damned if I do, if I don't (Yah) Goddamn us all if you won't (yahhh) Damn, damn, damn, it's a goddamn shame. You ain't frontline, get out the goddamn way."
On FEEL, he falls into the very mentality he wants to avoid... hard.
"The world is endin', I'm done pretendin' And fuck you if you get offended I feel like friends been overrated I feel like the family been fakin' I feel like the feelings are changin' Feel like my daughter compromised and jaded Feel like you wanna scrutinize how I made it Feel like I ain't feelin' you all Feel like removin' myself, no feelings involved I feel for you, I've been in the field for you It's real for you, right? Shit, I feel like- Ain't nobody prayin' for me"
It’s a mentality that’s just objectively not true but it’s one that we all fall into on our worst days. We watch the news, browse nonsense on twitter, chat with friends, go to work, go to school, and at the end of the day feel cheap. Like, even for all our hard-work, time, and effort, we gain nothing of value in the end. The mysterious it Kendrick is vying for will just remain in it’s same, fixed spot on the horizon, ready for him tomorrow when he ultimately gets up again to walk on that treadmill some more.
LOYALITY comes next and here, with the help of Rihanna, Kung Fu Kenny recognizes that he needs a safety net to rely on when times get tough. He meditates to make sure he’s, as Ri-Ri puts it, Loyal to himself in advance then goes on to drop one of my favorite lines on the record:
“Is it unconditional when the ‘Rari don’t start? Tell me when your loyality is comin’ from the heart.”
Or in other words, “When shit hit the fan, are you still a fan?”
On PRIDE, Kendrick knocks himself down a peg again. Maybe he’s trying to reconcile a conflict between Pride and Loyality. It reminds me, personally, of that scene in Pulp Fiction where Marseilles Wallace talks down to Butch because he’s demanding his Loyality. “FUCK PRIDE.” He shouts. “Remember... Pride only hurts, it never helps.” The second verse is my personal favorite:
“Now, in a perfect world, I probably won't be insensitive Cold as December but never remember what winter did I wouldn't blame you for mistakes I made or the bed I laid Seems like I point the finger just to make a point nowadays Smiles and cold stares, the temperature goes there Indigenous disposition, feel like we belong here I know the walls, they can listen, I wish they could talk back The hurt becomes repetition, the love almost lost that Sick venom in men and women overcome with pride A perfect world is never perfect, only filled with lies Promises are broken and more resentment come alive Race barriers make inferior of you and I See, in a perfect world, I'll choose faith over riches I'll choose work over bitches, I'll make schools out of prison I'll take all the religions and put 'em all in one service Just to tell 'em we ain't shit, but He's been perfect, world”
HUMBLE is anything but humble. It’s on an album with tracks written in all caps and reminds me of the way trump tries to put his points across. “I’m the humblest man in the world. You’ll never find anyone more humble than me. Trust me, folks.”
This song might serve to express another conflict Kendrick has with himself. He’s trying to be humble as a rapper and those two things rarely go together. Hip-hop is maybe the most bravado driven genre ever conceived.
On the other end of HUMBLE we have the disturbingly forthcoming LUST. Kendrick’s fame puts him in a position to take advantage of others, abusing his power over them like he did on These Walls. This calls to mind Trump’s famous scandal. “When you’re a star they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ‘em by the pussy. You can do anything.” It’s a point K dot addresses with his second verse:
“We all woke up, tryna tune to the daily news Lookin' for confirmation, hopin' election wasn't true All of us worried, all of us buried, and our feeling's deep None of us married to his proposal, make us feel cheap Still and sad, distraught and mad, tell the neighbor 'bout it Bet they agree, parade the streets with your voice proudly Time passin', things change Revertin' back to our daily programs, stuck in our ways; Lust”
I love LOVE FT. ZACARI. It’s in many ways indebted to Drake’s “Hotline Bling” but the situation is just the opposite. Kendrick reminisces on the early days of his relationship with his, now fiancee, Whitney Alford. In contrast with LUST, it forms a flawless juxtaposition between a relationship that’s true and one that, because of Lust, is all yours. It’s most hopeful song on the entire album.
LOVE’s hopefulness then gets completely dashed by XXX. FT. U2. Here Kendrick acknowledges the great lengths he’ll go to in order to defend those he loves.
“He was lookin' for some closure Hopin' I could bring him closer To the spiritual, my spirit do no better, but I told him "I can't sugarcoat the answer for you, this is how I feel: If somebody kill my son, that mean somebody gettin' killed." Tell me what you do for love, loyalty, and passion of All the memories collected, moments you could never touch”
He later says “Alright kids, let’s talk about gun control.” like he’s an authority on keeping the peace. Kendrick knows he could easily be driven to do ridiculously heinous things too but still provides lip service to an issue. This conflict continues to persist despite Kendrick’s, now, long standing success and calls to mind Hillary Clinton, someone who tried to hide having a public and private position throughout the campaign last year.
This propels us into FEAR, a song that moved me to tears the first few times I heard it. On this goddamn masterpiece, we're guided through fear from three different stages of life.
"If I could smoke fear away, I'd roll that motherfucker up and then I'd take two puffs."
Presumably, one puff for U and another for I.
This song, to me, addresses the most painful aspect of fear: It's all yours. It's all specialized and unique on an individualized basis. Your fear, worries, and anxiety were specially designed within you on a personal level. It’s largely inseparable from who you are. The threats become less and less real as Kendrick ages, sure, but the feeling remains to haunt him. The final verse messed me up so hard because in the end it's revealed that Kendrick isn't talking about losing his wealth or his dad beating him or violence in his community. No. It's not that at all.
"I'm talkin' fear, fear of losin' creativity I'm talkin' fear, fear of missin' out on you and me I'm talkin' fear, fear of losin' loyalty from pride 'Cause my DNA won't let me involve in the light of God I'm talkin' fear, fear that my humbleness is gone I'm talkin' fear, fear that love ain't livin' here no more I'm talkin' fear, fear that it's wickedness or weakness Fear, whatever it is, both is distinctive Fear, what happens on Earth stays on Earth And I can't take these feelings with me So hopefully they disperse Within fourteen tracks, carried out over wax Searchin' for resolutions until somebody get back."
It's the real resolution to Kendrick's problems. On this verse, he finally bites back at this fear.
GOD gets back to Kendrick by gracing him with the ability to express these feelings on wax. His message has resonated with millions. Now he feels revived in knowing that whether he's Damned or not is totally out of his hands. Kendrick argues that this must be what God feels like while he’s working on his music but he never actually refers to himself as a "God". Kendrick knows his true nature. He’s a King, a man among the people. That's part of why the second album theory doesn't work. Kendrick ain't Jesus. He’s just like all of us, a mortal man.
DUCKWORTH drops some crazy shit on us. It's essentially Kendrick Lamar's origin story. Basically, It all sums up into a situation where Top Dawg, his mentor, could've killed his Dad. This would mean that Kendrick would've never been famous. Top would be in prison and that he'd grow up fatherless in Compton, California. These people are in his DNA though, now. Their choices were essential in producing the environment needed to turn Kendrick into a chart-topping success story.
Conclusion
And that's it. That's the album. It's impressive as hell. Although, I have a few problems with it.
The biggest is the production. It's good, even flawless on some songs but it's not consistent like on his previous two records. FEAR sounds so radically different from almost everything else and I might like it so much because it reminds me of Kendrick's earlier work.
Rihanna's vocals and the backing track on LOYALTY are real iffy. Sampling 24K Magic and putting Rihanna on a track this straightforward reads as a very naked shot for the pop charts. It works but feels somewhat dumbed down at the same time.
U2's appearance on XXX is acceptable. I really enjoy their almost insane inclusion but it kinda feels like a usable but deflated basketball. Sure, it works but it doesn't work as well as I want it too.
Luckily though, Kendrick is a flawless MC on this project. He provides so much substance on these tracks that I almost forget the actual music part of the music. He went pop. It's excellent too but, ultimately, it's not why I listen to Kendrick Lamar. I love this album. It arrived at a very appropriate time in my life. It's better lyrically than Good Kid, Maad City for me but it ain't got nothing on TBAP. On TBAP, Kendrick had the sound and the lyrics. Here, he has the lyrics. I hope he dominates the year with this stuff. Hell, It might finally win his ass album of the year at the Grammy’s this time around. I’m still salty at Taylor’s win with 1989 but it’s whatever.
Another great album by Kendrick Lamar though. Goddamn and God bless, Kung Fu Kenny.

Evens for writers ask meme?
2. Where is yourfavourite place to write?
Either the kitchen table, which is the perfect height for my laptop & the only place in the house that gets sunlight in the morning, or my bed tbh.
4. Do you have anywriting habits/rituals?
Not writing habits so to speak but I do have a getting ready to write ritual that mostly consists of dragging myself out of bed and going for a walk.
6. Favourite characteryou’ve written?
Mouse!Surana, hands down. I kinda just made her on the spot for that one oneshot and as a result she ended up radically different from my usual OCs (they’re not usually this… driven xD), which made her such a blast to write.
8. Do you have anywriting buddies or critique partners?
@coppercaravan has been both for a little bit over a year and they’re such a pleasure to work with tbh.
10. Pick an author (orwriting friend) to co-write a book with
1) @coppercaravan we should stick our OCs together and see what happens, y/y?
2) That being said it’s super easy to get me to write with you literally all you have to do is drop into my inbox like “hey we should write a thing” and be very patient with my spoonie ass.
12. Which story ofyours do you like best? why?
Honestly it’s the quasiplatonic solavellan fic. I love Tathas, I put a lot of work and also a lot of me into it, I have a lot of thoughts about what’s coming next and I really wish I could finish it already esp since it wouldn’t be that long (like. 8-10 chapters tops, not counting a potential Trespasser sequel) but I haven’t been able to get in a DAI mood for forever x_x
14. What does it takefor you to be ready to write a book? (i.e. do you research? outline? make a playlist or pinterest board? wing it?)
Ideally I’d need the stars to align perfectly on a week with two Mondays, but more realistically what I need is:
-a playlist, or at least a couple artists that’ll put me in the right mood
-character sheets with some basic info + relationship charts + their stake in the plot
-a rough chapter by chapter plan that will inevitably fly out the window by the time I finish chapter 1.
16. Cover love/dreamcovers?
Not really, no.
18. Tell us about thatone book you’ll never let anyone read
So back in January there was that self-insert month thing, and I figured why the hell not, but b/c I’m apparently unable to write self-indulgent fluff and also I was in a Mood it turned into a writing as therapy thing and now I don’t know what to do with it b/c on the one hand I do want to write it & I think it would help me deal with some stuff but on the other idk that I would ever be able to let anyone read it, let alone post it online.
20. Any advice foryoung writers/advice you wish someone would have given you early on?
Length is overrated, short chapters are fine and the only good piece of writing advice is that there is no such thing as universal writing advice.
22. Tell us about thebooks on your “to write” list
… I’m not gonna give you a full list b/c it would be ridiculous but the ones that are on my brain atm are:
-- Présages aka The Novel aka that one story about ghosts that turned into a story about the importance of healthy communication & a good support system.
-- A novella about an aromantic protag that was supposed to be a subplot of the previous but is now its own thing so I can give it the attention it deserves.
-- A fantasy novel that started with me listening to too much critical role and is basically a thinly disguised metaphor for fighting against depression.
(All of them are depression books tbh and I’m not even a little bit sorry.)
And then there’s the fics:
-- A post Akuze longshot feat. Leo, grief and politics.
-- A Leverage/HP crossover feat. pre-canon Eliot, wizards and poor attempts at dragon smuggling.
-- A CCS/Naruto crossover that I’ll probably never write tbh b/c the sheer size of it is terrifying to me, but I like to dust it off every other month anyway b/c I put a lot of thought into it.
24. Do you remember themoment you decided to become a writer/author?
I don’t remember the moment I started to write – that was a long long time ago – but the moment I decided to become a writer I’m pretty sure was when I read The Princess Bride, b/c I very distinctly remember closing the book and going “I wish I’d written that”.
26. What’s the mostresearch you’ve ever put into a book?
It’s kinda hard to tell tbh b/c my research, like everything else, tends to be scattered in short bursts over months/years, but my most recent research-heavy project has been the Leverage/HP crossover, which has led me to a lot of reading on poaching/smuggling as I tried to figure out how one would go about smuggling a dragon.
Turns out there’s no actual book on dragon smuggling but I ended up learning a lot about butterfly smuggling, which as it turns out is
1)a thing
2)very serious business.
28. How do you stayfocused on your own work and how do you deal with comparison?
I don’t. I don’t stay focused on anything, ever. I also deal very poorly with comparison even tho the only one doing the comparing is my own self.
30. Do you like to readbooks similar to your project while you’re drafting or do you stick to non-fiction/un-similar works?
I do! I find it very helpful esp. when I’m writing in a genre/style I’m not used to. I try to avoid it with fanfiction tho so as to avoid accidentally absorbing other people’s headcanons into my own work.
32. On average how muchdo you write in a day? do you have trouble staying focused/gettingthe word count in?
Tbh I usually count in ‘pages’ (quote/unquote b/c I’m using my own format which is considerably shorter than what you probably think of when you hear ‘page’), and I’m trying to get myself to two pages a day for The Novel but I’m considerably slower when I’m not writing in French b/c language is hard.
34. Unpopular writingthoughts/opinions?
-- Character death is overrated.
-- The idea that conflict is necessary to tell a good story is highly subjective and even if it wasn’t a good conflict shouldn’t just boil down to ‘characters being horrible (or downright abusive) to each other’/‘characters being forced to commit or witness atrocities’ over and over again.
-- Romance is boring and so is smut.
-- Young/aspiring writers need positive feedback way, way more than criticism, constructive or not; constructive criticism overall is overrated (which isn’t to say that it’s never useful but like it’s not The One True Way For A Writer To Improve that a lot of ppl try to sell it as).
36. Post a snippet
She’s always been lucky is the thing.
Lucky to find the Reds when she needed them, lucky to lose them when she no longer did, lucky to get caught by the right people at the right time, lucky to be offered military service instead of prison, lucky that Anderson had seen something in her no-one else ever had.
Lucky to survive doesn’t feel so special.
38. How do you nailvoice in your books?
Honestly that is one thing that comes p much naturally to me? Like whenever I write in a character’s voice I can usually ‘hear’ what I’m writing so to speak, which makes things considerably easier tbh.
40. Do you look up toany of your writer buddies?
What kind of question is that I look up to all of y'all??? I’m not even kidding here y’all are amazing and talented and I’m so thrilled I got to meet all of you?
42. How many drafts doyou usually write before you feel satisfied?
I’d say 2-3 though it’s kinda hard to tell b/c I don’t strictly speaking work in full drafts, I tend to go back and forth between paragraphs instead.
44. Why (and when) didyou decide to become a writer?
I must have been like 16 or something. Hell if I remember why except I love stories and it seemed like a good idea at the time?
46. Past or presenttense?
I actually prefer past tense despite my current inability to write it (idk why all my fic end up being present tense but I suspect English).
48. Do you prefer towrite skimpy drafts and flesh them out later, or write too much and cut it back?
I mean most of my fics are already under 500 words long can you imagine if I actually cut stuff from them? :p
50. Do you share yourrough drafts or do you wait until everything is all polished?
I tend to wait until everything is polished but also, again, it’s super easy to get me to share rough drafts or even outlines with you b/c I am weak and crave validation.
52. Who do you writefor?
Me. Always.
Like listen the fact is actually talking openly & honestly about personal stuff even to people who have been there for me in the past is literally the hardest thing for me to do and I got so damn good at avoiding it I don’t even have to think before I do it anymore, and sometimes it feels like writing is the only way I can actually properly communicate anymore. So yeah I’d be lying if I said I didn’t care about ppl loving what I write but it will always be first and foremost something I do for myself.
54. Favourite firstline/opening you’ve written?
already answered here
#ghouliissh#marti#marti why i thought we were friends#i didn't even reread this i'm just kinda assuming i didn't leave any answer unfinished
