Best Snorkeling Tours, Trips & Cruises for 2023-2024 - Casual Monday Charters
Are snorkeling tours worth it?
Whether snorkeling tours are worth it depends on several factors, including your personal preferences, the destination, the quality of the tour, and your level of interest in marine life and underwater exploration. Here are some points to consider when deciding if a snorkeling tour is worth it for you:
Destination: If you're visiting a location known for its vibrant coral reefs, diverse marine life, and clear waters, a snorkeling tour can provide you with a unique and memorable experience. Popular snorkeling destinations include the Great Barrier Reef, the Maldives, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and more.
Access to Marine Life: Snorkeling tours often take you to areas with rich biodiversity that you might not be able to access on your own. Guides who are familiar with the local marine environment can point out interesting species and provide educational information about the ecosystem.
Equipment and Safety: Snorkeling tours typically provide you with the necessary equipment, including a mask, snorkel, fins, and sometimes a wetsuit. They also often have safety measures in place, such as guides who are trained in water safety and first aid.
Guided Experience: If you're new to snorkeling or not confident in your swimming abilities, a guided tour can offer a sense of security. Guides can help you get comfortable with the equipment, assist if you encounter any issues, and ensure you're snorkeling in safe areas.
Learning Opportunity: Snorkeling tours often come with educational components, where guides share information about the marine ecosystem, coral reefs, and the various species you encounter. This can add depth to your experience and increase your appreciation for the underwater world.
Convenience: Joining a snorkeling tour can save you the hassle of researching and planning the best snorkeling spots, renting equipment, and figuring out logistics. Tours usually take care of these aspects for you.
Group Dynamics: Snorkeling tours can be a great way to meet fellow travelers and share the experience with others. However, keep in mind that group dynamics can vary, and some people might prefer a more private or secluded snorkeling experience.
Cost: Snorkeling tours come with a cost, which can vary significantly depending on the destination, the tour operator, and the inclusions. It's important to compare prices and reviews to ensure you're getting value for your money.
Ultimately, the worth of a snorkeling tour depends on your interests, comfort level in the water, and the overall experience you're seeking. If you're passionate about marine life, want a guided experience, and are visiting a destination with excellent snorkeling opportunities, a tour can be a fantastic way to explore the underwater world. However, if you're already experienced with snorkeling and prefer to go at your own pace, you might opt for independent snorkeling adventures.
Is snorkeling safe for beginners?
Snorkeling can be safe for beginners, but there are several important factors to consider to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience:
Choose the Right Location: Select a snorkeling destination that is known for calm and clear waters, minimal currents, and shallow depths. Avoid areas with strong waves, undertows, or dangerous marine life.
Guided Tours: If you're a beginner, consider joining a guided snorkeling tour. Guides can provide instruction on how to use the equipment properly, offer safety tips, and lead you to safe and suitable snorkeling spots.
Equipment: Make sure you have well-fitting and functioning snorkeling equipment, including a mask, snorkel, and fins. Properly fitted gear ensures comfort and reduces the risk of leaks or discomfort while in the water.
Swimming Ability: You don't need to be an expert swimmer, but basic swimming skills are essential for snorkeling. You should be comfortable in the water and able to tread water or swim short distances if needed.
Buoyancy: If you're not a confident swimmer, consider using a flotation device like a snorkeling vest or a floatation belt. These can help you stay afloat easily, conserving your energy and allowing you to focus on observing the underwater world.
Stay Close to Shore: Stick to shallow waters and stay close to the shore, especially as a beginner. This way, you can easily return to land if you feel uncomfortable or fatigued.
Buddy System: Snorkel with a buddy, especially if you're new to snorkeling. Having someone with you adds an extra layer of safety and allows you to look out for each other.
Watch the Weather: Avoid snorkeling in adverse weather conditions, rough seas, or when there are strong winds. Check the weather forecast before heading out and always follow local guidelines.
Stay Calm: If you encounter any challenges while snorkeling, such as water getting into your mask or feeling anxious, remain calm. Signal to your buddy or the guide for assistance and take your time to address the issue.
Respect Marine Life: Avoid touching or disturbing marine creatures and coral reefs. This not only protects the ecosystem but also reduces the risk of accidental injury from potentially harmful species.
Know Your Limits: Don't push yourself too hard. If you start to feel tired, cold, or uncomfortable, it's better to end your snorkeling session and rest.
Health Considerations: If you have any pre-existing medical conditions that might affect your ability to snorkel, consult with a medical professional before you go.
By taking these precautions and following proper safety guidelines, snorkeling can be a safe and enjoyable activity for beginners. If you're unsure about anything, don't hesitate to ask questions, seek guidance from experienced snorkelers or tour operators, and prioritize your safety at all times.

They typically involve hiring a private boat or charter and a knowledgeable guide to take you to the best snorkeling spots on the reef.
Here's what you can expect from a private reef snorkel tour:
Customized itinerary: Private tours allow you to create a personalized itinerary based on your preferences and interests. You can choose the specific reefs or snorkel sites you want to visit, ensuring you get to explore the areas that interest you the most.

Photography opportunities: Private tours often allow for more time and flexibility for underwater photography or videography. You can capture the beauty of the reef and marine life at your own pace, without feeling rushed.
It's worth noting that the availability and offerings of private reef snorkel tours may vary depending on the location you're visiting. It's advisable to research and contact local tour operators or travel agencies to inquire about private tour options and make necessary arrangements.
Where is the best place to snorkel the barrier reef?
The Great Barrier Reef, located off the northeastern coast of Australia, is one of the most famous and stunning snorkeling destinations in the world. While the entire reef offers incredible snorkeling opportunities, there are a few key locations that are often considered the best for snorkeling:
Cairns: Cairns is a popular gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and offers easy access to some outstanding snorkeling spots. The nearby Green Island and Fitzroy Island are known for their crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral gardens, and abundant marine life. There are various snorkeling tours and day trips available from Cairns that cater to different preferences and skill levels.
Whitsunday Islands: The Whitsunday Islands, located off the coast of Queensland, provide breathtaking snorkeling experiences. Whitehaven Beach, with its pristine white sand and turquoise waters, is a highlight. Several snorkeling tours take visitors to sites like the Great Barrier Reef's Heart Reef, where you can explore stunning coral formations and encounter diverse marine species.
Lady Elliot Island: Situated on the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, Lady Elliot Island is renowned for its exceptional snorkeling and diving opportunities. The island's crystal-clear lagoon and coral gardens offer incredible visibility, making it a haven for snorkelers. The chance to see manta rays, turtles, and a vast array of tropical fish is a major drawcard.
Port Douglas: Another popular entry point to the Great Barrier Reef, Port Douglas offers access to the Low Isles, an idyllic coral cay. The waters surrounding the Low Isles are calm and shallow, making it an excellent snorkeling location for beginners and families. You can encounter an abundance of colorful corals, tropical fish, and even spot sea turtles.
It's important to note that the health of the Great Barrier Reef is a significant concern, and there are ongoing efforts to protect and preserve this fragile ecosystem. When visiting, make sure to choose responsible tour operators who prioritize sustainable practices to minimize environmental impact.
Additionally, it's advisable to check the weather conditions and seasons when planning your snorkeling trip, as visibility and water conditions can vary. Consult with local tour operators or dive shops for the most up-to-date information and guidance on the best snorkeling locations during your visit.

Thank you my darling fae! @ginger-grimm also requested isaac; tagging the usual crew @dancingsunflowers-ocs @ginevrastilinski-ocs and @bi-ologistofthehills
1. a summer trip they think of fondly: in high school, isaac got to go to key west in florida with his best friend, lana, and her family. he had the best time hanging out at the beach reading his book, exploring ernest hemingway’s key west aboad, snorkeling, fishing etc
2. their favorite disney princess: it’s a toss up between belle and tiana (isaac relates to belle’s love of books and feeling like an outsider while he adores tiana’s hardworking nature and her love story with naveen)
3. the first song they would dance to with their partner at their wedding: to be honest, i think it would be so cute if isaac and edmund danced to just the way you look tonight by fred astaire because isaac would want to give ed just a little piece of where he grew up at the wedding
4. if they have tattoos or piercings: that’s a no-go on the piercings (isaac refuses to get any type of piercing on his body); however, with the tattoo, i could see him getting a favorite literary quote tattooed on his person or a flower that could relate to his and edmund’s relationship
5. the scariest moment in their life: when he was stabbed by jadis after pushing edmund out of the way during the battle in tltwatw; he was so terrified not of dying but that he wouldn’t be able to say goodbye to his loved ones
6. if they would break the law: i could honestly see isaac breaking the law if it was for a noble reason or because it was the right thing to do at the time
7. their favorite reality show (because everyone secretly has one): isaac secretly has a thing for dance moms (he thinks abby lee miller is insane af but entertaining to watch)
8. if they have a favorite chore: yard work, hands down (come on, that’s his JAM! mowing the lawn, tending the garden, stocking wood etc)
9. if they like being in pictures and what faces they make in them: he doesn’t mind pictures, but it’s still not his favorite thing so the best face you’ll receive from him is a polite but vacant smile
10. if they get along with kids: isaac’s actually not too bad with kids because he’ll participate in whatever activity they want to do and makes sure they’re all having fun

Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende
Born a slave on the island of Saint-Domingue, Zarité - known as Tété - is the daughter of an African mother she never knew and one of the white sailors who brought her into bondage. Though her childhood is one of brutality and fear, Tété finds solace in the traditional rhythms of African drums and in the voodoo loas she discovers through her fellow slaves.
When twenty-year-old Toulouse Valmorain arrives on the island in 1770, it’s with powdered wigs in his baggage and dreams of financial success in his mind. But running his father’s plantation, Saint-Lazare, is neither glamorous nor easy. It will be eight years before he brings home a bride - but marriage, too, proves more difficult than he imagined. And Valmorain remains dependent on the services of his teenaged slave.
Spanning four decades, Island Beneath the Sea is the moving story of the intertwined lives of Tété and Valmorain, and of one woman’s determination to find love amid loss, to offer humanity though her own has been battered, and to forge her own identity in the cruellest of circumstances.

Postcards from Snagglepuss
And what a morning bracer this is!
SOMEWHERE IN THE COLORADO ROCKIES NEAR ESTES PARK: Picture, if you will, just around sunrise ... Huckleberry Hound and yours truly, just getting acclimated to waking up at well above a mile above sea level. And just getting up out of our hammocks, even, getting fitted into our wetsuits for a morning's dive into a rather esoteric mountain lake, likely filled with glacial meltwater even ... the mask/snorkel combi gets fitted, as well as the fins ... and even Wally Gator, otherwise acclimated for more humid climes, can't help but put in the proverbial last word:
"THIS alligator wouldn't go diving in waters like these, even if he were offered a million bucks, don't you know?! I'm more the sort fond of the Everglades, the Florida Keys, even the springs country, if you ask me!"
You just could not believe the view inherent from the shore of the lake we were about to dive into, discover even ... witness the distant foothills of the Rockies proper some 30 miles off to the west, not to mention the High Plains heading somewhat southerly. Heavens to John Denver!!!
One deep breath as we step out of the shallows ... and thanks to the wetsuit, the coolish waters manage to feel rather interesting as we get into the deep-breathing exercise for the descent.
And into a somewhat murky-looking lake doth we descend.
Credit the sensation of Neoprene foam rubber and Lycra for keeping the two of us warm in waters which were probably closer to 40 degrees when we came in ... and something of a sheer sort of weirdness inherent in such a lake as here. A weirdness which can easily turn fascinated--or is it fascinating?
But at least you've got something new and interesting coming from underwater in these parts. Such which the forehead-mounted GoPro cameras manage to capture in their--how shall I best parse it--barrenness? "Which," as Huckleberry Hound managed to explain over some instant oatmeal we had after the dive, "may be, in and of itself, interesting considering its nature."
"So I imagine ... so I imagine!" responded I. "And yet, imagine how Peter Potamus would respond! But then again, not even WiFi Internet is to be had in such remoteness, and cell phone reception likewise!"
"Thankfully," Huck explained, "I was able to rent us some satellite phones to keep in touch during our campout."
"Which reminds me," saith I, as I decided to get in some time with one Peter Potamus, probably somewhere up in Wisconsin with a couple of his diving buddies, to explain our experience.
"One thing I find worth mentioning to you at this time," he explained. "If you all could find your way to Spring Lake out by Stillwater, Minnesota sometime towards the end of July--"
"Which would probably be just ahead of our next Convocation over Pie Day in Braham, Minnesota in August," remarked I.
"Thanks for the reminder," Peter remarked. "Anyway, the reason we'd like you up at Spring Lake is for a rather interesting underwater ceremony involving my Magic Divers, which will have you and Huckleberry Hound duly recognised!"
"Now that will be one for the flicktoons, even!"
Peter Potamus couldn't help but chuckle over that last remark of yours truly.

Before I went to college, my parents took me to Key West. We snorkeled there. We actually did see a shark. The people had a name for them.
I legit just went “huh. Shark.” when I saw them (before adrenaline went “OH… That’s a shark…”, and yes we had to get out of the water, but sharks aren’t gonna just eat you for the hell of it.
They’re chill, usually; just don’t bother them and they’ll likely not bother you.

🌊🏊Sharks are nice!🏄
Since its summertime and people are gonna be hitting the beach to swim and/or surf, i decided to make this informative shark post. In the media sharks are portrayed as mean bloodthirsty and vicious creatures. Such as in movies like “The Shallows” and “Jaws”. But are sharks really that vicious? The answer is no. No they are not. Sharks are really nice and sweet creatures. I am a surfer and have been bitten a couple of times by sharks but i still know the truth… sharks aren’t evil creatures. You may be thinking “but you’ve been bitten by one! How can they not be evil!?” Well the answer to that my bro is simple, its all a misunderstanding. You see, sharks dont have great eyesight. They are blind as fuck. So they rely on other senses to find food. They see the silhouette of us surfers on our boards and they see it from a below angle and they think we kind look like seals, their favourite meal (as seen in the pics above). So they take just a nibble to see what the fuck we are. Once they realize we aint a seal, they go away. Why? Sharks HATE the taste of human meat. We disgusting af to them. Thats why the majority of shark attacks are just sharks bitting once and then leaving. They just wanted to know what the fuck we are bro. Its a case of mistaken identity. A misunderstanding. Have there been shark attacks where the shark bites more than once? Yeah. But thats rare and it only happens if the shark is either (1) feeling threatened or provoked. Or (2) very hungry. Like, i mean STARVING.
Sharks just wanna eat but they dont wanna eat us. Its just a simple misunderstanding. As you can see in the photos above, people can swim with sharks and nothing happens. Its totally fine my dudes. So there you have it, sharks are homies, not hostile.

MORE INFO: The likelihood of being attacked by a shark is thought to be 1 in 11.5 million, and only 4 or 5 people in the entire world die each year from shark attacks.[1]. If you’re still nervous about meeting one of these ocean predators, check out these guidelines to help you further minimize the chances of an encounter- http://m.wikihow.com/Avoid-Sharks-While-Surfing

February 10 - Yesterday Sarah and Chris flew down from snowy Warwick to spend several days on Molly D.

Happy hour at the Boathouse, a first night tradition for Sarah and Chris.
This morning we were all up early and off Molly D before 6:45. I had purchased tickets for all of us for the ferry to the Dry Tortugas. David has been wanting to go there for several years. He wanted to take Molly D. The Dry Tortugas are about 70 miles from Key West, an all day trip from KW. So, travel to, visit for a day, and a return to KW would take 3 days. I opted for a ferry trip from 8 to 5. Easy!

On the ferry headed to Dry Tortugas. Sitting inside was a wise choice.

Fort Jefferson at the Dry Tortugas
Ben, a crew member on the ferry, led a very informative tour of the fort. Ben was a wealth of information on the history of the fort! Amazing!
After Ben’s tour, we headed to the ferry for lunch (which was included in the cost of the ferry ticket). The provided lunch was a turkey, ham or roast beef grinder from Jersey Mikes, chips/pretzels, a beverage and cookies.
After lunch, Sarah and Chris headed one way for snorkeling, and David and I headed the other way. Beautiful beaches and cool water.

“I have to acclimate myself to the cool water.”

A fish and its shadow

Blue water and white sand

Personal boats anchored at the Dry Tortugas

The “changing hut” where guests can change into their bathing suits and back into their street clothes.
The crew of the Yankee Freedom were the best. They all were very helpful, friendly, accommodating, and all around genuinely nice. The ferry was well maintained inside and out. The crew rigged a salt water foot washing hose on the dock so that sand could be washed off legs, feet and shoes prior to boarding. The stern of the boat had 3 WARM WATER showers for rinsing salt water off bodies and clothing. On any typical tourist trip, a jar is placed for the deposit of tips for the crew. The Yankee Freedom handled tipping differently. Raffle tickets were sold. The winner of the raffle got to pick out one item from the ship’s store. The collected raffle money was designated for the crew members “tips”. Great idea!
If you are ever in Key West and want to go to the Dry Tortugas, I highly recommend going on the Yankee Freedom. (You could also go by seaplane. Twice the price and you wouldn’t get breakfast, lunch, the narrated fort tour, and an awesome crew).

Sea planes are another way to travel to the Dry Tortugas.
