to understand limbus means you need to have prior knowledge of older games in order to grasp on the terminology..

Full guide on this series.
Project Moon is an indie south korean-based company responsible for three games: lobotomy corporation, library of ruina and limbus company. All three games take place in the same setting and universe: a dystopian city where society is ruled by the rich, capitalism runs rampant and a world where people are at their core, selfish for their own personal needs. Their games are also well recieved for being very punishing by their difficulty as well as their writing.
It would be better if you play these games yourself since at this time where I'm posting there should be a discount for ruina (idk why lobcorp isnt) , since these are only summarised gameplay introduction. Both games will give you sufficient information to elevate your experience as you play Limbus Company (a free gacha game!)
Here are spoiler free introductions to the games.
Lobotomy Corporation
Lobotomy corporation (Lobcorp) is the first game in the series, and is a monster management simulator where you, the manager of said energy generating company must manage your employees from dying to scp-like creatures of increasing risk type through special gear called EGO, collect energy to fill the quota while learning more about this facility and the AI who run the departments you're managing. One of these AIs is called Angela, who will be super relevant because she is not who she seems to be.
Genre: Monster management, strategy, simulation
Library of Ruina
The direct sequel to Lobcorp. Absolutely themed with books. After the true ending of Lobcorp, Angela has broken free from the shit thats been happening to her in the facility, and chooses to open up a "Library" where she finds people in the City to invite, incite them with the promises to find information and valuable secrets from within her Library and collect their story in order to find the one true book that she wants to finally feel human.
Your job is to help the previously AI-now-human people from lobcorp to complete the reception of these guests by killing these people to turn them into books and get stronger. (By getting stronger you get to unlock more stronger guests and become a dangerous entity in the City) It makes you feel bad for a while but the game makes sure you learn that you have no say in Angela's decision, and slowly you get desensitized to these deaths. This game is very emotionally charged compared to lobcorp because of the situations you pit your guests into, as well as the fact that this game explores a BUNCH of character trauma. (I'm not kidding the recurring antagonist is literally an MC hate club support group)
this game might suck difficulty wise, but its actually useful for limbus company because it introduces you to the social dynamics of the city as well as familiarise the player with the amount of associations and offices. very important info later on.
Genre: Deck building, turn based strategy, some adventure sprinkled in there
Limbus Company
Congratulations Project moon for trying to attempt at a mobile game! This game is unlike any other, and will be slowly updating itself over time. (You can absolutely play this on cross platform btw)
So, its been some unspecific time since the first game. The buildings of lobcorp have fallen into a Very Abandoned State ever since their base collapsed sometime ago. You're this amnesiac guy called Dante, who finds out he can make a pact with these 12 sinners who Just So Happens To Be the biggest crossover in all of literature. Every sinner is based off one literature character or figure.* (See: Yi Sang the poet) Together with your silly little team of 12 you have to travel around the City in search of said Abandoned Lobcorp Buildings and collect these crystallised wish-granting energy called Boughs for an unknown reason. And there's a lot of places to be.
Each Canto/Chapter so far focuses on one sinner. The game is unique in that it builds onto the continuous worldbuilding from the previous games as well as the webcomics, as well as a whole new combat system compared to Ruina. It's also a gacha game where you use the gacha element to roll for alternate identities and EGO of your sinners to supplement your team's strength against the various enemies you will face.
Genre: Deck building, turn based strategy, adventure and 18+ rating for darker themes.
I have no idea if this will answer your question but my askbox is open if you have further inquiries. I know its possible to play Limbus without any knowledge but it might leave you confused at worse.
But im curious what is limbus company about
Idk either. Project Moon lore is hefty and really big.
You'll need to look back onto lobotomy Corp, then Library of Ruina and then Limbus Corp I think.
@perpetual-pathos, you wanna take the stage to answer?
