The Teesta River flows through the valley, there's a hot spring nearby, and the village of Lachung is close too. Yumthang Valley is truely a magical place that every traveller should visit.

How to Get to the Yumthang Valley

Getting to Yumthang Valley is part of the adventure - there's no direct way, which makes it even more exciting!

You can use the following means to travel:

✈️ By Air: Fly to Bagdogra, the closest airport. From there, take a taxi to Gangtok, and then another taxi from Gangtok to Yumthang.

🚂 By Train: Take a train to New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in West Bengal. From there, hire a taxi to Gangtok and continue your journey to Yumthang.

🚗 By Car: If you enjoy road trips, you can drive from Gangtok to Yumthang—a 140 km journey that takes about 5-6 hours.

Best Time to Visit

Yumthang Valley is beautiful all year, except during the monsoon season 🌧️ and the very cold winter months ❄️ (unless you like the cold!). For Sikkim tourism, best time to visit is between October and June 🌻☀️🐝.

Attractions You can't Miss!

While traveling through the valley, you'll find many captivating attractions to explore. Here are some of the most remarkable highlights:

Mt. Katao

About 28 km from Lachung, Mt. Katao is a dream for hikers and nature lovers. In spring, the valley bloom with poppies, primulas, and rhododendrons. You needs a permit from the army to visit Mt. Katao, but it’s worth it!

Best Time to Visit: Spring (March to June) for colorful flowers, or winter (December to February) for skiing and snowboarding.

Lachung: The Gateway to Yumthang

Before you reach Yumthang Valley, you'll pass through Lachung, a lovely village at an altitude of 2,900 meters. "Lachung" means "small pass," and it is the only village in Sikkim that uses a unique self-governance system called "Zumsa." The village is along the Lachung Chu River and is full of old Sikkimese traditions, with houses decorated with colorful curtains featuring Tibetan designs.

Lachung is a great place to rest before heading to places like Lachen or Gurudongmar Lake . Spend a few days here to enjoy misty mornings, amazing mountain views, and a real taste of Sikkimese culture.

Lachung Monastery: Surrounded by apple orchards, this colorful monastery is at 2,750 meters and has a statue of Guru Padmasambhava, a important figure in Tibetan Buddhism.

Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary

Near Lachung, you'll find the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary—a must-visit for nature lovers. It covers 43 square kilometers and is home to many types of rhododendrons, along with other colorful flowers like aconites, gentians, and poppies. You might even see local birds like the wood snipe or hoary-throated barwing. The best way to enjoy this sanctuary is by trekking through Yumthang Valley!

Khanda Waterfalls

On your way to Mt. Katao from Lachung, you'll pass Khanda Waterfalls. This waterfall is beautiful—overflowing during the monsoon and frozen in winter. It’s like something out of a fairytale, reminding you of scenes from "The Chronicles of Narnia."

Phuni Valley

Located 18 km from Lachung, Phuni Valley is great for skiing, with wide slopes and snow-covered mountains - a paradise for ski lover. The best time to visit is from January to March.

Yumthang Hot Springs

Relax in the Yumthang Hot Springs, where natural hot water filled with minerals bubbles up from the earth. Localites believe these waters have healing properties, and while sharing the space with them might feel a bit strange at first, it’s an experience you shouldn't miss.

A Natural Wonderland

Imagine a valley surrounded by huge, rugged mountains—some covered in green forests, others in bright flowers—with a clear river winding through the middle. That’s Yumthang Valley in spring (March to April). By October, the valley turns golden, and in December, it becomes a snowy wonderland.

Yumesamdong (Zero Point): Just 15 km beyond Yumthang is Yumesamdong, also called Zero Point. This is the last spot you can reach by road before the wild, snow-covered landscape takes over—a place where civilization ends, and nature takes over.

Other Nearby Gems

Mt. Brumkhangse: This 5,635-meter peak opened for expeditions in 2005 and offers an exciting hike with amazing views. It’s moderately challenging and has become popular with hikers.

Kinema Curry

The Kinemary is cooked by the Kirati communities in the Himalayas Region, including East Nepal, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and some parts of Sikkim Region in India. The dish can be prepared by firstly soaking soybeans overnight and then boiling them for 2 to 3 hours until they soften. Next, the soybeans are fermented for 3 days. Shimi Ko Achar is yet another famous and traditional dish of Sikkim. The popular dish is made with string beans and onions. The main ingredients of the achar are sesame seeds, green chillies, and lemons as they balance the taste.

Momos

The momos may have originated in the 14th century while both Nepal and Tibet claim to be the origin place for moms. There are two theories: the momo entered India in the year 1960s when a large number of Tibetans settled across India in regions like Delhi, Ladakh, Darjeeling, Dharamshala and Sikkim and the 2nd theory credits the Kathmandu Newari Merchants.

3. GANGTOK - DARJEELING (100 KMS. 4 HRS)

After breakfast, transfer to Darjeeling (6,950 Ft.). On arrival, check in to the hotel and rest of the day at leisure.

4. DARJEELING FULL DAY SIGHTSEEING WITH TIGER HILL

Early morning (4:00 AM) visit Tiger Hill (Subject to availability of Permit / Token) and then back to the hotel.

5. DARJEELING - NJP RLY STATION / IXB AIRPORT (75 KMS./ 3 HRS )

After breakfast, checkout from the hotel and take the departure transfer to New Jalpaiguri Railway Station / Bagdogra International Airport for your onward journey.
