Tasked with scoping out a party thrown by one Angel Devlin (Really?) and Major Smej (Really???) he heads out, only to be deterred by one missing fact: It’s a costume party, and his costume of ‘White Man With Terrible Fashion Sense’ just isn’t going to cut it.

I’m a little confused as to how a special order, an order you make specially, can have odds and ends left over, but okay, let’s see what you can throw together, Jack!

This box of odds and ends seems to contain a yellow zentai suit, matching makeup, a green wig, a sheepskin rug with the longest and straightest wool I’ve ever seen, and stripperific gloves, underoos, and boots. Uh, what kind of “special adult order” was this? Not that I’m judging or anything. We all have needs!

In his complete lack of subtlety, Jack as been found out by several of the costumed goons that are strewn about the party. He gets into a fight that no one notices, knocks one of them through a secret door that no one notices, and ends up stabbed by a second foe. Does anyone notice? No. It is so unnoticeable in fact, that we have to be told it has happened. Probably the good old CCA in action.

This secret tunnel is exactly what Jack has been looking for, so he goes exploring. With a knife wound in his side. He also has to fight a few thugs while he’s at it. With a knife wound in his side. Are we sure he was really stabbed, or was he maybe lying to us?

Nah we can absolutely take his word for it that he was totally stabbed. You see? By the time he locates the abducted Professor, his completely bloodless knife wound has left him slightly winded!

But the dastardly goon who stabbed him went and did the sensible thing: instead of chasing after his wounded prey, he went and told his boss! Unheard of! They, along with their henchmen, start trying to pry open the conveniently jammed secret door.

Totally unnoticed by anyone else, of course.

Jack re-clocks the murderous mook, and our villains, after eighty-four years of not being noticed, finally lever the hidden door open, only to be confronted with smoke and surprise fists as our hero escapes!

The ruse works perfectly, especially since Jack manages to stomp on the pacifists head on his way out the window. Jeez Steve, we get it, you were pro-war. No need to rub it in.

Escaping into the yard isn’t much help for our hero, as he is still severely outnumbered, and, y’know, wearing one of the most saturated color schemes the Silver Age could offer. He does start to pull himself together though, noticing that his wound is practically gone, and that his appearance, as well as a few belts of cackling laughter seems to unsettle his opponents.

However, he gets a little too into the, uh, ‘swing’ of things...

...And accidentally pops a cop. Now, this gives plenty of setup for the police to have problems with him in later issues of the story-instead of the cops being corrupt, or disliking him for being a vigilante, or making them look bad, he full on assaults an officer of the law mere minutes after properly becoming the Creeper. He makes a very big mistake, and it mars his relationship with the police for the rest of his story. 

Switching back to just plain Jack, he manages to throw the cops off his trail, but also overhears that they have been unable to locate our villains. This clearly will not stand. A man has died here! And that annoying pacifist is still pontificating about violence! Unacceptable! Something must be done!

So Jack goes right back into Creeper mode because let’s face it, Jack is boring. Thus we are given my favorite panel in the entire issue...

Creeper tracks the villains and their remaining gang into the garage, which also seems quite a lot bigger on the inside. and manages to ambush them while making the most noise that he possibly can.

In the end, the cops bust that gang for good, the Creeper is given his eternal moniker, and both the underworld and the overworld finally agree on one thing.

They gotta, gotta have that man.

And so the comic comes to a close, with Jack cheekily declaring that he won’t let anybody know about Yatz’s revolutionary device, so that only a responsible person can use the power it holds.

Back in Spring of this year, I was covering the Epica tour in Bristol and got chatting to a fellow photographer. He told me that he was there for one reason – Myrkur – one of the support bands. As he told me about them with the passion of an evangelist, I drifted in and out of the conversation. He described them as a black metal band, which is far from a genre that moves me. Their stage time arrived, and within seconds I was a convert as the combination of ancient melodies and dark rhythms blew me away. So, as you might imagine, when I heard that Myrkur were headlining a tour that included the intimate Fleece in Bristol, I had to be there.

Long before the date of the show, ‘sold out’ notices were posted. Crowds had formed well in advance of doors opening, and I was glad I had arrived VERY early to ensure that I had a chance of getting some photographs.

A long wait, even once inside, was rewarded when the lights went down and the diminutive, almost shy figure of Jo Quail walked on stage with the most beautifully crafted cello I have ever seen, and took her seat amongst an arrangement of effects pedals. Now, one of my guilty pleasures is a love of the Two Cellos, so I was dying to see what she was about to do with this beautifully expressive instrument. The answer was to fill the room with soundscapes of exquisite beauty and complexity. Using a technique I first came across on Queen’s “Brighton Rock”, Jo used delays to craft a mille feuille of rhythm, melody, and ambient sounds that evolved and drifted through each piece. A slap on the body of the instrument became a percussive beat. A slow draw of the bow, twisted and shaped by the effects, a swirling canvas. A rich melody became urgent and harsh as her fingers moved up towards the bridge. Her 45 minute set consisted of just four pieces. “White Salt Stag”, “Gold”, “Mandrel Cactus”, and finally “Adder Stone” which evolved out from “Between Two Waves”. In between songs, Jo seemed genuinely taken aback by the reaction, and her smile lit up what was often a VERY dark stage. The thing that most struck me about her music was its’ organic nature. At the end of the first piece she commented about how it usually ended differently, as if the song had a life of it’s own and she was simply trying to guide it, shape it, and keep it under control. I suspect that if you see her live and hear any of the music played last night, it will have become a totally different beast by the time you do. In view of the low stage lighting, I gave up on the idea of taking many photos and instead let the waves of sound wash over me, and the almost perfect silence during softer passages suggested everyone else was doing the exact same thing.

So, to Myrkur.

Myrkur is an artist rather than a band. A project by Danish musician Amalie Bruun that bases itself in two, seemingly contradictory, genres; black metal and ancient folk music. Taking the stage with a seated band comprising of guitarist, bass, drummer and support act Jo Quail, the first portion of the set is based around acoustic folk.

Myrkur herself, blue tinted blonde hair contrasting with a full length black dress, provided a tribal rhythm via a skin drum whilst filling the room with crystal clear vocals of exquisite beauty. The room was so quiet, that for the first time ever at a gig, I was embarrassed by the sound of my camera shutter. The stage was decorated with a number of “crystals” on white twigs, each with a filament bulb. Throughout the acoustic songs, these glowed amber, washing the stage with an almost candle light that complemented the music beautifully.

With Quail’s cello rounding out the sound, and and with subtle guitar and bass, Myrkur took us on a journey through some ancient and evocative history. “Bonden Og Kragen” opened the set. “The House Carpenter” started slowly, and then became a glorious jig that took the sound in another unexpected direction, that I would love to hear more of, with it’s energy and vitality. “Lullaby Of Woe” was introduced as a song that had recently been added to the set. Dark and eerie, Myrkur’s vocals handling the minor key with ease. At her side throughout the first set was a sheepskin blanket cradling the most beautiful instrument, a Nyckelharpa, (The first time I have ever shot an instrument on stage simply for it’s artisan appearance), and to finish the set, the band left the stage to allow it’s ancient tones to float from the stage in isolation. Then Bruun herself left the stage, and a flurry of activity commenced as the chairs, instrument stands, and clutter were cleared.

The decorative lights then began to glow, the crystals flicking between primary colours, then the lights blazed and the band returned transformed. Wearing black sleeveless hoodies and body paint, the previously amiable musicians became the servants of crushing riffs and almost violent intensity. Myrkur appeared dressed in a white dress with black skin belt, providing a visual as well as aural contrast.

This second set was what makes Myrkur so fascinating to me. I am no black metal fan, but somehow the ancient, traditional melodies, still clearly audible beneath the waves of sound and intensity, stimulate more parts of my musical brain than it has previously experienced, and I am utterly entranced. “The Serpent”, “Ulvinde”, and “Dybt I Skoven” made up the initial onslaught, with little audience interaction between singer and crowd. The occasional “Thank You”, or a quiet introduction of a song, was pretty much it. The connection between artist and audience meant that was unnecessary though, as her sheer presence meant your attention couldn’t wander for a second. At times, Myrkur played a guitar that took the axe metaphor to a new level, looking as though, if one edge were to be sharpened, it could be used to take the heads off an attacking horde. My personal highlight of the second half of the performance was latest release “Juniper”. A perfect example of what Myrkur are about, it begins with crystal clear vocals that soar from the stage, then moves into a dark, droning passage, and finally explodes into a riff that almost physically pushes you back. It is a real showcase of how Myrkur blends sounds that span hundreds of years.

The set would usually close with the extraordinarily tribal “Villemann Og Magnhild”, a kulning that sends Myrkur’s haunting voice floating out of the venue, but tonight the band left the stage, and after a lot of chanting and clapping from the crowd, didn’t reappear. I had noticed at several points Bruun held her throat with the occasional wince, although her vocals were incredible at all times, so I wonder whether this one last gymnastic was pulled to save her voice for another day (rightly so, if that were the case).

For me to shoot a gig in Bristol is a two hour drive, and normally I would be struggling to stay awake on the late night drive back to Devon, but I was so full of adrenaline I was home before I knew it and struggling to sleep! I have covered a lot of gigs this year, but, amongst them all, this stood out as something truly special and unique. Myrkur brings something new and fresh whilst at the same time, ancient and tribal. The contrast and resulting sound absolutely fascinates me.
