Lastly, there is your personal safety to consider. Medical payments insurance can cover the cost of you or a passenger’s medical bills after an accident. Health or workers compensation coverage may also be in play. Man wins $37 million case against J&J due to cancer-causing substances

Recently Stephen Lanzo, from New Jersey, won a $37 million case against Johnson & Johnson stating that their talc products contain cancer causing substances, or carcinogens. The suit states a link between Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder and asbestos, a cancer causing substance. Asbestos is known to cause a specific type of cancer called mesothelioma.

Stephen developed mesothelioma, a type of cancer that has no cure. Mesothelioma primarily affects the lungs and other organs in the abdomen. It is debilitating disease that, unfortunately, has an extremely low life expectancy rate. Mesothelioma is treated with either chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation. He attributes his cancer to over 30 years of using Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder unaware of its cancer causing effects.

Products with talc in them create a dust in the air when moved around making it easy to accidentally inhale. Asbestos mostly affects the lungs, so, prolonged exposure to dust clouds containing asbestos would create the perfect breeding ground for mesothelioma.

KENTUCKY HOUSE PANEL APPROVES $50 MILLION TAX INCREASE ON VAPING & TOBACCO PRODUCTS

Last month, a Kentucky House committee approved a bill to add tax on vaping products as well as increase the existing tax on tobacco products other than cigarettes. The tax would raise $50 million over the next two years.

Currently vaping products are only subject to the 6% sales tax. This new bill would add vaping items to the list of “other tobacco products” which would make them subjected to related taxes. The wholesale tax on these products is currently 15% and would increase to 25% if the bill passes.

In his budget proposal, Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear recommended a 10-cent increase in the tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products and a new 10-cent-per-milliliter tax on vaping liquid.

NORTHERN KENTUCKY DANGEROUS DRUGS | YAZ YASMIN INJURIES

By September 2019, Bayer HealthCare, the manufacturer of Yasmin and Yaz, had received 74 lawsuits initiated by women who claimed that they developed health problems after taking this birth control product.  The manufacturer has stated that it will defend itself aggressively.Yaz and Yasmin are popular birth control products sold in the United States.  For Bayer, this oral contraceptive is its top-selling pharmaceutical line.  The company has spent millions of dollars on advertising to promote this product as more than just a pregnancy prevention, but also a way to treat acne and premenstrual depression.  Last year alone, this product line brouth in sales of $1.8 billion worldwide.

Yasmin was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001 and Yaz, which contains a lower amount of estrogen, was approved in 2006.

Yaz and Yasmin Criticism

Women have recently been coming forward stating that Yaz and Yasmin have caused them to suffer serious health problems.  This oral contraceptive contains an ingredient known as drospirenone, which can increase potassium levels in the blood, leading to such health problems as heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism, kidney disease and deep vein thrombosis.  Women who are already at risk of a condition known as hyperkalemia or women who are taking medications that can raise the potassium levels in their bodies are at a higher risk of suffering injuries from this birth control.

According to an article by the New York Times, Bayer’s American unit responded to a reporter’s queries by stating that its birth-control drugs had been and continued to be studied.  The company also said that it stood behind safety of its products.

In the beginning of 2019, Bayer was contacted by the FDA, because of the company’s commercials.  The FDA instructed Bayer to correct the misleading television ads.    Then in the summer, the FDA cited Bayer for not adhering to proper quality control procedures at a manufacturing plant that produced hormone ingredients.

RONALD JOHNSON REPRESENTS THE BULLITT COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION IN VAPE CASE

Earlier this month The Bullitt County Board of Education filed a lawsuit against Juul, making them the first district in the state to go after the vape manufacturer. HJVE partner Ronald Johnson will be representing the school district in the case.

Ronald Johnson told the Courier-Journal, The Bullitt County Board of Education “has shown that it is in fact a leader in educational excellence by being the first school district in Kentucky to pass a resolution to file a lawsuit against Juul and the other corporations that manufacture, distribute and sell e-cigarettes and vaping products.”

We expect more school districts to come forward against Juul and other e-cigarette manufacturers too.

“In recent years, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of infractions that involve vaping in our middle and high schools,” the Bullitt County Board of Education Superintendent Jesse Bacon said. He wants to hold Juul accountable for “creating this epidemic of nicotine addiction that affects the health of our students, disrupts the learning environment of our schools, and diverts resources away from the core mission of Bullitt County Public Schools, which is educating students.”

The district is seeking compensation for its anti-vaping efforts and lost instructional time and is blaming Juul for marketing their products to youth.

“We spent 30 years getting kids off cigarettes and we were very successful and now within a matter of three years, we have a whole generation that’s addicted to nicotine,” Ronald Johnson tells WDRB.com about the vaping epidemic. “The vaping companies have manipulated the way that the nicotine is delivered in these products because it’s much more potent and much less irritating to the throat, which was all designed to target kids. So, these kids are severely addicted to nicotine.”
