Kevin Alas on new inspiration in Govs’ Cup: Siyempre family, si God, si girlfriend

But these days, the young NLEX combo guard looked inspired, not just because the new conference gives his team a fresh start, but more so because of his new inspiration in Sports5 courtside reporter and girlfriend Selina Dagdag.

“Marami! Marami! Siyempre family, si God…si girlfriend..,” Alas said with a big smile when pressed by reporters to name his newfound inspiration shortly after NLEX nosed out Alaska, 112-104 for a triumphant conference debut Wednesday night.

But turning serious, the six-foot Alas said the Road Warriors still have a lot of work to do, considering they’ll play three games in the next two weeks.

“I’m happy with the win at sana masundan namin kasi next two weeks we have three games pa,” said Alas.

Finally figuring out its winning formula with head coach Yeng Guiao, NLEX is now on a three-game winning streak dating back to the Commissioner’s Cup.

But what made their conference-opening win even more interesting was the fact that the young Alas now owns the bragging rights with his 3-0 record over his father Louie, who serves as Alaska’s assistant coach.

“Oo nga e, 3-0 na kami (versus Alaska). Hindi ko alam, swerte lang, swerte,” said Alas, who finished with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

The former Letran standout, though, stressed they celebrating with the win would be too premature since the Road Warriors are still far from where they want to be this conference.

“It’s just one game but we’re happy, ayun lang, we need to be consistent lang kasi nangyari na nung All-Filipino na we won our first game then we lost five straight so ayun lang, parang we shouldn’t be confident na nanalo kami ngayon, a lot of improvement pa,” he said.

This time, however, Alas enjoyed having veterans JR Quinahan, Alex Mallari and Larry Fonacier to show the way in their quest for redemption.

“I mean maganda din yun addition nila Alex, Larry, JR and kasi with Larry, he’s been a leader sa amin lalo na sa akin, kinakausap niya ako parati,” added the former Letran star.

“I think we need to be consistent lang. Siyempre it starts with practice lang na huwag pa rin masyadong mag-enjoy sa panalo but siyempre we’re happy.”
