Our heroes:   Sail into the sunset
What important things did we learn about: Callen:   Married Sam:   Best Man. Kensi:  Pregnant. Deeks:    Dad to be. Fatima:   Catches the bouquet. Rountree:  Proud brother. Kilbride:  Worried about the younger staffers.
What not so important things did we learn about: Callen:  His Mr. Carl is a butch Mr. Rogers. Sam:    Switch is a specific man. Kensi:   Glowing according to Anna. Deeks:    Former member of the Kiss Army. Fatima:   Running things in Ops with Rountree Rountree:   See Fatima. Kilbride:   Calling the Argentinean military about some missing guns.
Where in the world is Henrietta Lange?  Hopefully somewhere where Callen, Sam, Nell, Nate, Sabatino and the New Guy can find her.
Who's down with OTP:   One got married, one is having a baby.
Who's down with BrOTP:   The show’s central relationship is doing just fine.
Fashion review:  The main characters all wore their Part 1 clothes for most of the episode.  Sam changed into a black Carhart jacket, black tee and black pants as Switch.  At the wedding, Callen and Sam looked spiffy in their tuxedos.  Callen wore a bow tie, Sam a long black silk tie.  Kensi wore a lovely grey gown.  Deeks went with fashion forward with a pink jacket, crisp white dress shirt with no tie and black pants.  Fatima wore a beautiful red gown.  Rountree went with a dark suit and a white tee-shirt.  The Admiral work his work suit, which transitioned nicely into evening wear.  At the end of the episode, Callen is in a light blue button down shirt, Sam is wearing an olive green field coat with a black baseball cap.
Music:   “Private Number” by William Bell featuring Judy Clay played in the after wedding scenes.  “Midunya” by Moroccan Spirit was playing when Callen and Sam arrived in Morocco.  “Hold On, I’m Coming” by Sam & Dave ended the episode.
Any notable cut scene:  No.
Quote:  “I most certainly do.”
Anything else:  Previously-s including the Admiral meeting with Adams, the team meeting with Newsome, meeting with Nina Barnes, the fight in the bad guy’s house and learning that Kerry Adams is dirty.
The shooting continues in the garage.  Callen and Sam find cover behind two different cement columns as Adams and her driver reload.  The time reloading gives Callen and Sam the window to shoot both Adams and her driver.  Adams is alive and trying to get to her weapon.  Callen gets to her gun first.  He calls for an ambulance.  She doesn’t know how Callen and Sam figured things out.
The opening credits are a nice mix of 14-seasons worth of credits.
Callen, Sam and in an-Ops Fatima and Rountree debate whether Adams was dirty and setting up Newsome to take the fall or if Adams and Newsome were working together.  If Newsome is dirty, Kensi and Deeks could be in trouble.   Fatima will contact the two about the change in the ATF’s relationship with NCIS.  Rountree has news from Commander Collins.  About  90% of the stolen weapons are used by the Argentinean military.  The Admiral is going to tell Argentina’s military that someone is stealing from their bunkers.
On overwatch, Deeks is out of snacks.  Kensi isn’t eating – they aren’t on a picnic, they are on overwatch.  They debate whether Newsome is dirty or not.  Deeks wants to play “I Spy”, Kensi really does not.
In the boat shed, Castor brings Nina Barnes to a patiently waiting Callen and Sam.  Castor and Barnes have Starbucks – Castor ordered a girly drink.  Callen wanted Barnes to appear because it was “urgent” but obviously she didn’t think it was urgent.   Since she’s not getting paid, she’s running on her schedule.  Callen asks if Barnes knows who is moving the weapons.  She does not have a name but the weapon buyers but knows they are moving the money with special fund exchange where she may or may not have an account.  Barnes thinks she can set up an arrangement with the weapons broker.  Asked about how the money is moved, Barnes explains that everything is done with an air-gapped computer.  “Good luck with that.”
All dressed in black, Barnes is reading to make the deal with “Switch”.  She sees the new armory in the boat shed and thinks it had to be Kibride’s idea.  He had a similar set-up when he lived in Texas but the guns came up from the ground.  Callen, Sam and Barnes leave to make a deal with the gunrunners.
Sam and Barnes go to a up for rent restaurant to meet with the gunrunners.  Sam takes a weapon from the boat shed’s armory.
With Kilbride keeping Fatima and Rountree in Ops, Kensi and Deeks are on their own watching Newsome.  Deeks takes out his earwig, Kensi does the same.  Saying they don’t have to be so far away in overwatch, he wants them to move up closer to Newsome and the bad guys.  Kensi could check out the van with the weapons while Deeks causes a distraction with some “bubble gum.”
In the restaurant, Sam and Barnes are searched even though she “never has anything on me.”  The guard find’s Sam’s gun.  He’ll get it when their business is completed.  A man, Bryant, comes from the kitchen.  He’s not happy, the rules are Barnes only comes alone – who is her guest.  Sam introduces himself as Switch saying “this bitch owes me money.”  Since Barnes has credits in the system, she wants to cash out - $110,000, a specific number for a specific man.
From Ops, Rountree has the schematics of the restaurant and will guide Callen to where he needs to be.  Meanwhile, Fatima is cutting cell service so Callen will have to use satellite technology to stay in contact with Ops.  Callen makes his way into the building, just missing being seen by Bryant and his guard.  Bryant notices there is no cell service.  He’s off to check if Barnes has enough money in her account.
The guard returns to Sam and Barnes – Bryant is getting approval to move the money.  Sam/Switch isn’t interested in approval, he’s interested in getting his money.  Barnes wants the money – it is her money.
Deeks is yelling near the gate of the bad guy’s house, looking for Bubble Gum, his Burmese python that gone missing.  The last time he slithered away, he ate a coyote and was sick.  The guys at the front gate want nothing to do with “freak boy” Deeks.  Kensi is able to get near the vans and place cameras on the vehicle.  Deeks is going on about his hypoglycemic snake.  Fatima and Rountree are getting feeds from the cameras.  Deeks is warning the guys at the front gate that their dogs, cats, platypus’s are all in danger with Bubble Gum slithering free.  When Deeks gets the all clear, he leaves after seeing Bubblegum.
Walking into Ops, the Admiral sees that Kensi is just outside of the house and Deeks is by the gates.  He also sees video of the weapons inside the vans being sent by the cameras Kensi attached.   Unhappy the plan was not “vetted by me”, the Admiral wants Kensi and Deeks back on overwatch until the team knows who is running the guns.  He also asks if Callen has found the air-gapped computer.  He has not.  This isn’t good – “we’re running out of time,” according the Admiral.
The Admiral tells Fatima and Rountree there is a lot of admire about the senior members of the team, a lot to learn from them.  Rountree says they’ve learned a lot from them.  The Admiral was not in the mood to be interrupted since he wasn’t finished.  Kilbride does not want Fatima and Rountree to learn that disobeying orders is appropriate.  Fatima wonders if Kensi and Deeks were “technically” disobeying orders.  They were according to the Admiral, “what the hell would you call it?”  When there is no answer, the Admiral demands one since there are no wrong answers.  Rountree thinks Kensi and Deeks showed initiative.  “Wrong,” the Admiral yells – seems there were wrong answers.  Also, Fatima sort of smiles and that doesn’t help her cause.  She finally raises her hand wondering if they should join Kensi and Deeks in the field.  That goes over poorly.  They will remain in Ops to support the team.
Callen gets Bryant into a sleeper hold, knocking the man out.  A few zip-ties later and Callen is at the stopgap computer.  With his satellite phone, he gets Fatima and Rountree into the computer.   Fatima finds who got the weapons to the gunrunner while Rountree looks for the buyer – Maximillian Dana.  Dana is a businessman with restaurants, dry cleaners and other stores.  Obviously he also sells guns.  Kilbride gives the green light – Callen and Sam can end their work at the restaurant, Kensi and Deeks can secure the weapons.
Just as Callen is about to get offline, the Bryant’s guard walks in.  He takes a few shots at Callen before Callen can take him down.  The shooting in the back of restaurant has Sam, Barnes and the guards in the front of the restaurants all pointing fingers at each other.  Sam thinks the cops are coming.  One of the guards starts shooting.  Barnes pulls a gun from her bra and takes him down.  Sam takes a gun from one of the guards.  Barnes covers Sam as he gets back his weapon.  The two take out the last guard.  Sam gets an all clear from Callen before childing Barnes for not telling him she was armed.  She likes the element of surprise, besides “real gentlemen never touch the good stuff.”  The gun is her “Double D-Defender.”
As she moves to the house, Kensi is taken by surprise by a guard coming up from behind her.  The two struggle falling through a glass door.  Kensi is off comms at this point so Fatima sends in Deeks behind her.  He jumps a fence to get to her, making sure the guard near Kensi stays unarmed.  “God I love you,” Deeks tells her before two other guards arrive.  Kensi takes out one, Deeks the other in a show of great teamwork.  Both Fatima and Rountree are impressed by Kensi’s work.
In the bad guys’ playroom, one of the two remaining henchmen says he’s lost contact with the other guards.  This causes the two to go after Newsome.  They think he’s a cop.  “Kill him.”   Hiding in a closet, Newsome knocks out one of the henchmen, getting his weapon.  The other henchman makes a threat against Newsome.  With the big weapon from the bad guy, Newsome shoots out a wall, shooting henchmen number two.
Outside of the house, the surviving henchmen are being taken away in ambulances.  Kensi and Deeks are sitting the back of an open police SUV when Newsome comes by.  While it is tough for him to admit, he was happy to have NCIS’s help.  He promises that if NCIS ever needs help, he’s there.  Deeks start talking about all the NCIS team members going lone wolf at different parts of their time with the agency and it rarely works.  Newsome has heard enough to know he likes working alone.  As he departs, Kensi gets a text.  Callen wants to meet with them in Beverly Hills.  If Kensi and Deeks leave right now, they could swing by Rosa’s softball games.  Deeks likes the idea of hot dogs and soda.  That gets a “hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo” from Kensi.
Rountree is waiting for Jordyn.  Her alumni interview went well.  Her grades and professor recommendations are among the best they’ve ever seen and certainly the best this year.  Jordyn feels Rountree “oozing negative energy.”  Rountree explains that there is news in their case.  There will be no LAPD trial.  Jordyn is shocked.  There will be a settlement and while Jordyn doesn’t want to, Rountree tells her it is a lot of money.  It will pay for all of Jordyn’s medical school tuition/expenses with enough money left over that they could buy a condo and stop paying rent.  They don’t have to make the decision today but they do have to make a decision.  Rountree thinks the best outcome of this terrible incident is that they can change the trajectory of their family tree.  Jordyn disagrees – they changed that by both being college graduates.  Now Rountree disagrees – Jordyn is going to have more than a college degree, she’s going to be a doctor.  Rountree reminds Jordyn that she did all the hard work – getting the grads, studying, acing her interview.  He’s “damn proud” to call her his sister.
Callen walks into his house as Arkady and Anna are bickering about the seating plan.  Arkady asks Callen where should he sit for the wedding.  “In the parking lot,” is Callen’s answer.  Anna will let Arkady pick his seat if he brings one guest.  Arkady explains he was always a “plus two” wedding guest.  The conversation turns to Titan the DJ and Callen wants no part of it.  He wants to speak privately to Anna, who is about to go but first she warns Arkady that if he touches the seating chart, “I will cut you.”  Arkady is proud – Anna reminds him of her mother.  “And you see what that got her.”  And adds “she will always be my minus one.”
Saying she’s going to kill Arkady, Callen tells Anna to give him the head’s up – Arkady is too big to move alone.  “Not if I cut him into pieces.”  Callen asks Anna if she still wants to get married.  She does but is worried he doesn’t.  He does.   He really does.  He just doesn’t want to do it this way.  Anna apologizes that the wedding planning has gone badly.  Callen promises Anna that none of this matters – he wants to get married now.  “Now now, right now.”  Anna says she looks like a mess.  They can get married at City Hall.  Anna can wear her dress, Callen will borrow a tux from work.  Arkady can go if Anna wants him there.  Callen even called Stacey, Anna’s maid of honor. She’s out of town.  Anna has a backup plan.  She is grateful to Callen.  The two kiss.
Kensi cannot believe that Callen and Anna are getting married.  She is putting on an nice gown.  An arriving Rosa has two dresses – a blue one with polka dots and a pink and green floral dress – and she can’t decide.  Kensi like the pink and green.  Deeks shows up in a dress shirt without his pants.  He can’t find them but Kensi tells him they are in the laundry.  Asked by Rosa which dress, Deeks thinks they’re both beautiful but obviously, the blue one.  Rosa thinks her parents aren’t helping.
Kensi struggles to zip up the back of her dress when the phone rings.  Deeks can’t get the phone so Kensi answers.  It is Dr. Cassell asking how Kensi feels.  She’s thinking of sticking with the bland diet.  The doctor gives her news and she starts crying.  Deeks returns, asking about his shoes.  Kensi ends the call and she’s really crying.  Deeks is as upset as she is – wanting to know how was on the phone. The two hug, he’s scared she’s not talking.  She finally tells him, “we’re having a baby.”  Deeks is stunned – they tried everything and nothing worked.  The two hug again.  He’s thrilled it wasn’t her food that made her sick.  Kensi starts to laugh.  A returning Rosa asks what’s going on.  Deeks tells her she’s going to be a big sister.  Rosa is happy too.  The three have a big family hug.  Kensi wants them to keep this all a secret – today is about Callen and Anna.  “Who?” Deeks asks before agreeing to keep things quiet.  Deeks want to confirm things with Dr. Cassell.
At the courthouse, Callen and Sam are dressed in their fancy tuxedos.  Callen thanks Sam for being his best man.  “I would not be here today if it wasn’t for you.”  Sam agrees.  Callen wonders if Sam feels the same.  After teasing about some heartfelt moments being missed, Sam agrees.  The two shares “I loves you’s” and a big hug.  Callen is ready to get married.  The guests are in the middle of the courthouse floor.  Rountree, Deeks, Bertie, Rosa, Arkady, Admiral and Fatima are all waiting.  All smiling.  Anna arrives with Kensi as her bridesmaid and a judge.  “Let’s get ready to rumble,” the judge says.
Callen and Anna say their “I do’s” with a weeping Arkady watching over Kensi’s shoulder.  Callen jumped the gun on his “I do”, cracking up the crowd before saying “I most certainly do.”  The two exchange rings and their first married kiss.  The Admiral wishes Callen and Anna their best.  Kensi thinks Anna looks stunning, Anna thinks Kensi is glowing.  Deeks is eyeballing Arkady and Bertie together.  Rosa thinks Arkady and Bertie make a great couple.  Deeks asks Rosa if Arkady is what she wants in a grandpa.
Fatima catches Anna’s bouquet, with a “hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo” from Rountree this time.  She tries to pass him the bouquet but he passes it right.  Fatima jokingly calls him a coward.
Sam gives Callen another hug – he was sure he’d never see the day Callen would be happily married.  A man speaking Arabic comes up to Callen and Sam, offering a letter complete with a wax seal, saying “May God protect you, have a blessed day,” translated by Sam.
As the man leaves, Sam goes after him while Callen opens the letter.  It is from Hetty, who offers congratulations on the wedding and disappointment that she is missing “a glorious occasion”.   While people think she never had a family, Hetty begs to differ, she has had the greatest family a person could wish for “and so have you.”  Callen looks up and sees everyone at the wedding have a great time.  Anna comes to Callen, asking about the letter.  Sam returns.  He tells them about the letter, which Sam knew had to be about the wedding because Hetty is Hetty.  Hetty offers her house in Mykonos for the honeymoon – “stay as long as you like.”  Anna always liked Hetty.
Inside the envelope are plane tickets to Morocco for a small side project.  Anna promises to meet Callen in Greece as long as Sam keeps Callen alive.
In Morocco, Callen and Sam are in a jeep, going to a side of the road market in their GPS’s coordinates.  Callen is hoping for a cold beer, Sam thinks he’ll be lucky to get some mint tea.  Callen prefers mouthwash.  Sam is hoping some of the locals speak French. Callen is confused – Sam speaks Arabic.  He does, but not the local Darija Arabic spoken by the Morocco locals.
Callen is drawn to a little woman drinking tea. Saying “Hetty”, the little woman is Nell.  Hetty has gotten herself into a little pickle and Nell with her team is having a hard time getting Hetty out.  “Don’t tell me Beale’s here with you,” Callen says.  Beale is giving a TED talk in Singapore.  Nell’s team arrives – Nate, with a pornstache, Sabatino and the New Guy who is really named Willis even if Sabatino only calls him New Guy.  Nate tells Callen and Sam their up to their asses in alligators.  Having Callen and Sam there is going to help.  Callen notes they were brought to Morocco  under false circumstances.   Nell gives a very Hetty answer:  “Subterfuge is the foundation of good espionage.”  “You’re getting more like Hetty every day,” Sam tells Nell, who takes it like a compliment.  Nell is working on a plan.  Sam and Dave’s “Hold On, I’m Coming” plays as Nell asks if Callen and Sam are ready for their new adventure.  They are.
What head canon can be formed from here:     This is how you do fan service.  Almost every major character got their storyline wrapped up.  Callen, who opened the series as the orphan without a first name, is Grisha who has a living sister, a nephew, a new bride and a wacky father-in-law.  Kensi opened the series as the woman who lost all the men in her life now had a loving husband and was starting a family of her own.  Deeks is a variation of this – his fracture family in childhood has become a loving wife, daughter and a baby on the way.  Rountree’s conversation with Jordyn in Part I changed their family tree with their educations but the settlement with LAPD lets the two move forward with those changes.
As for Sam, I think they knew he was moving to NCIS: Hawai’i for a season.   Sam, the family man, spent the season keeping his son in the air, reminded his daughter that he loves her for the person she is not for the persons she chooses to love and took care of the father who helped make him the man he was.  He could leave them for a year knowing everyone is in a good place. Speaking of fathers and sons getting to a good place, the Admiral getting basically his own episode to start repairing his relationship with his son.
The only one who didn’t quite get her own ending was Fatima.  Catching the bouquet at the wedding may be a hint of where she may wind up with Ali but she was the only character really left hanging.
Planning a season wrap-up next week and a series review week after that.
Thank you for reading these over the years.  The program got me back into fannish things after a long break.  The community here in Tumblr is terrific.  This is how you fandom.
Episode number:   This is both the season 14 finale and the series finale, episode number 323.

Get to Know Me Tag
I was tagged by the amazing @lullapiee! Thanks, sweetie! ❤
Rules: Answer the questions then tag 20 people you’d like to get to know better.
Name: Ruth.
Nickname: My name doesn’t really lend itself to nicknames, but one of my friends calls me Rooty sometimes, and I call myself The Crazy Sheep Lady in the hope that it’ll catch on.
Zodiac sign: Pisces as heck.
Hogwarts House: Ravenclaw.
Height: 5ft 8in.
Sexual orientation: Straight.
Ethnicity: Northern Irish.
Fave fruit: Pink Lady apples straight from the fridge! But really I love most fruit so long as there’s a pavlova underneath...
Fave season: Autumn is usually amazing but the hurricane blew all of the beautiful leaves away and now the trees are just bare. Thanks a bunch, Ophelia.
Fave book series: I, er, don’t have one? Although I do adore @findmomo‘s books! Oh! And I also like my own books, if I’m allowed to say that!
Fave fictional characters: The Doctor, Fred Thursday, Bill Potts, Clara Oswald, Leonard McCoy... too many to list, really.
Fave flowers: Again, I don’t really have any? I’ve never really thought about it. I do love it when the daffodils come out in the spring, though. There’s a great sense of excitement with them.
Fave scent: Freshly baked bread. Mmmm...
Fave animal: Impossible to choose between sheep, dogs and horses!
Fave band: Imagine Dragons.
Coffee, tea, hot chocolate: Coffee, nice and sweet, and hot chocolate sometimes too!
Average hours of sleep: *counts on fingers* About 8. Hey. Not bad.
Number of blankets: I have a duvet, and an additional fleece blanket for when it’s colder.
Dream trip: A road trip around England and the rest of the UK with a dog and a camera. I would say sheep and a camera but sheep need to eat so much grass every day that travelling with one would be impractical. I do know which one I would take, though...
Dream job: I haven’t really thought about it. When you grow up on a farm as an only child there’s never any consideration of what else you might do. I do love my animals though. And my photography. So... an animal photographer?
Last thing I Googled: @lullapiee’s answer, Ben Aaronovitch - because I wondered where I’d heard that name before. Before that it was “john impressionist” because for some reason I’d forgotten Jon Culshaw’s last name.
How many blogs I follow: 142
Number of followers: 767
What I usually post about: I’m unapologetically multifandom, but I’m mostly Doctor Who trash. There’s also some Supernatural, Sherlock, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Marvel, Star Trek, and a smattering of British detectives.
Do I get asks regularly: Not really. It depends if I’ve reblogged one of those ask games, and even then sometimes I can hear the crickets chirping. But maybe I’ll get one once a week or something like that?
Why I made a Tumblr: I was reading fanfiction by @thenyoumaykissthebride and on their profile they had a link to their tumbler? And I was like: “But what’s a tumbler? Isn’t that what you put juice in?” I scrolled through their entire blog, which was a few months old by that stage and took a few days. I was hooked. So many pretty things! So many funny things! So much Doctor Who! And so, on 1st October 2011, hours before The Wedding of River Song aired, I did make a Tumblr. And we’re both still here. Go us!
Reasons for URL: It’s a mashing together of Gallifrey, the Doctor’s home planet, and *****hafry, a townland very close to where I live. So it’s Gallifrey and home.
I’m always tagging the same poor souls so this time I’m going to mix it up. I’m tagging:
—the last 10 blogs I followed: @savedher, @impalaofthelord, @tillthenexttimedoctor, @jimkivk, @tardisly, @sansaoswald, @timclcrd, @clarasleafs, @whobeans and @loversandantiheroes.
—10 of my latest followers: @twelvesangels, @julibernardo, @waitingonadoctor, @impllicit, @pottssbill, @sttng, @acupofteasherlock, @strikingtwelves, @amessoffand0ms and @cosmicmarmot.
...and anyone else who’d like to have a go! :)

Quick answer, there's a few.

Well, 12 is probably more than a few, lol. But if I'm putting on a random ep, it's one of these.

Our heroes:   Are nearing the end.
What important things did we learn about: Callen: Wondering if he’s doing the right thing with Anna. Sam: Believes Callen is doing the right thing with Anna.   Kensi:  Not feeling well. Deeks:   Happy, grateful and enjoying his family moments. Fatima:  Doing a warrantless search. Rountree:  Hearing from his lawyer about his lawsuit against LAPD. Kilbride:  Working well with other agencies.
What not so important things did we learn about: Callen:  Wasn’t interested in how Arkady was banned from the Playboy Mansion until he was really interested. Sam:  Working out with Raymond in the park Kensi: Eating leftovers in the fridge. Deeks:  Not removing expired leftovers from the fridge. Fatima:  Master of the obvious as the episode ends. Rountree:  Being his sister’s biggest fan. Kilbride:  Making a rare visit during the work day to the boat shed.
Where in the world is Henrietta Lange?  In the previously-s.
Who's down with OTP:   Callen and Anna/Kensi and Deeks are having some ups and downs but are all very much in love.
Who's down with BrOTP:  If you don’t think the penultimate episode isn’t going to play up the most important relationship in the show, you would be wrong.
Fashion review:  Callen starts the day in a light blue workout shirt with a darker blue workout jacket.  Later, he wears a blue plaid button down shirt.  Sam wears black workout gear and a black cap in the park with Raymond, black long-sleeve tee at work.  Kensi wears a black top to the office.  Working overwatch, Kensi and Deeks are in light green jackets with light colored-pants so they fit in with the nature around them.  Deeks starts the episode in dark grey sweatshirt.  Fatima wears black cropped shrug sweater over a white tee-shirt that is fantastic.  Rountree  light blue tee-shirt and a really light blue demin jacket.  Kilbride has a charcoal grey three-piece suit, light blue dress shirt, beige paisley tie with a hint of pink.
Music:   “Pushin’ Rope” by Dead Things and War is playing in Anna’s ear buds when Arkady comes to visit. “Hunt You Down” by Jonathan Murrill, Lee Richardson, Tom Ford, James Cocozza and Raxstar is playing in the gunrunner’s home.
Any notable cut scene:  Yes!  After Rosa leaves for school, Deeks reviews some of her assignments – all A’s.  Kensi is in awe – Rosa makes all her excellent work look so easy, especially with English being a second language.  Kensi thinks Rosa is smarter than both of them.  Deeks thinks one of them – the one who is a scavenger when it comes to left overs in the fridge.  Kensi mentions that he’s the one who lets the food stay in the fridge for so long.  The conversation devolves into zombies.  Kensi wants to play a game where Deeks won’t talk without Kensi asking a question.  He doesn’t like that game.  She said she didn’t ask a question.
Quote:  Callen:  “You think I'm doing the right thing?” Sam:  “Doesn't matter what I think or anyone else, for that matter.  But, yes, I think you're doing the right thing.” Callen:  “What?” Sam:  “Nothing.” Callen:  “Come on, tell me.” Sam:  “It's just, it's just hard to believe, you know?  G. Callen, the nomad, the lone wolf, the shadow, about to be a married man.” Callen:  “Yup.  Did you plan your wedding?” Sam:  “Are you kidding me?  You knew Michelle.  I was lucky she let me attend.  That woman was nothing  if not a taskmaster.  Wow.  Long time ago.”
Anything else:  Lots of previously-s including the Rosa barbeque on the beach, Callen proposing, Sam dealing with Raymond’s condition, Rountree and Jordyn’s awful police encounter, Kilbride and Hetty having a talk before she left for Syria and Kilbride telling Callen Hetty was going.
In what looks like an abandoned warehouse, an intruder breaks in through the skylight.  He finds a few shipping containers.  One is empty.  The other has boxes, but they’re empty too.  Looking at some of the warehouse shelves, the intruder pulls the pin on a special grenade that starts a countdown.  A security guard confronts the intruder, with two men acting as back up.  As the guard tries to handcuff the intruder, the grenade blows.  Nobody is too badly hurt.  The intruder is able to punch and kick his way through the guards.
In their dining room, Callen and Anna are negotiating the seating arrangement for the wedding.  Arkady is bringing two dates and dates can’t sit near each other.  Callen jokes that Arkady thinks he’s Hugh Hefner.  This brings back memories for Anna of when Arkady was banned from the Playboy Mansion for dressing as Britney Spears, complete with a live snake, for a Halloween party.
Anna gets a call.  Two members of the band for the wedding has been in a car crash.  They are all alive and doing well but can’t play.  Anna is really upset.  Callen promises that it is all going to work out – “it always does.”
In the park, Sam is sparring/working out with Raymond.  Raymond calls it a workout, surprising Sam since the Major he knew never quit a workout.  The Major Sam knew had his original hips, Raymond reminds Sam.  Besides, he was at the gym twice that week with Arkady.  “Cigarettes and a flask aren’t exactly the building blocks of a tough workout,” Sam tells his father.  Besides, Sam went through lots of tough workouts as a kids, workouts that would trigger a child protective services call today.  Raymond asks if Sam would have gotten through SEALS training without those workouts.  “Probably” is Sam’s answer.
The Blye-Deeks home is getting ready to start the day.  They are just back from camping – Kensi brought the chocolate and graham crackers but Deeks forgot the marshmallows.  After Deeks makes a bad joke that smores without marshmallows are just sores, Rosa calls him on telling Dad Jokes.  They are going camping again soon.
As Rosa leaves, Deeks revels in the happiness and love he feels for his family.  He’s mindful of all this.  Kensi chides him – Kilbride isn’t a mindful fan.  Kensi isn’t feeling well.  She ate week old shawarma Deeks left in the fridge and said was still good.  Deeks said when she mentioned leftovers, he thought she was talking the ribs.  Kensi wants all leftovers dated and tossed after 48 hours.  She’s only allowed to eat rice, applesauce, toast and bananas.  And it’s Deeks’s fault.
In his SUV, Rountree is giving advice to Jordyn, who is going in to interview for medical school.  She knows she wouldn’t be there without him.  Rountree doesn’t agree.  They compromise on it being a Rountree team effort.  Rountree is so proud of Jordyn.  She makes him promise not to be mopey if the interview doesn’t work.  But he know she’s going this.
A woman pulls up in a parking lot in a non-descript Ford sedan.  She’s meeting the Admiral in his non-descript American sedan.  Introducing herself as ATF SAC Kerry Adams, she is asked by the Admiral about why they are meeting.  Adams has an agent, William Newsome, who is working a long undercover operation.  She shows a photo of Newsome to the Admiral.  It is the intruder at the warehouse.  Adams claims that Newsome has had an exceptional career with ATF, “truly one of our best.”  He’s working a case with stole weapons that are military grade.  Adams hasn’t spoken to Newsome for a while  - not uncommon but she’s concerned.
There are people around Adams who believe Newsome may have flipped.  His daughter died of a drug overdose, he split up with his wife.  The Admiral calls it a familiar story.  Adams is concerned that if Newsome flipped, he knows how the ATF functions, knows some deep undercover ATF agents in the field.  She hopes she’s wrong when it comes to being suspicious of Newsome but if she’s not, Newsome is not someone they want to cross.  The Admiral promised Adams that if Newsome is in trouble, NCIS will help him.  If he’s flipped, well, NCIS and the ATF will deal with that if it happens.
Driving to work, Callen is reading the case to Sam.  Kilbride wants Callen and Sam to work with Newsome.  They are worried that being undercover so long, Newsome may project an image NCIS and the ATF want to see.  Callen thinks they’ll be fine – everyone has a tell.  Sam asks Callen what is his tell.  Callen tells Sam he tilts his head as a “tell”.  Sam tells Callen his  “tell” is giggling.
Entering the boat shed, Agent Castor introduces Callen and Sam to Newsome.  The case is about “trigger happy gunrunners with a drug issue,” according to Newsome.  Sam thinks that a great combination.  Newsome is undercover to find out who is running the organization – nobody in law enforcement can figure that out – and where they are getting their military grade weapons.  Time is of the essence.  The organization will be leaving LA soon.  They have a large stockpile of weapons in town.  They want to sell the weapons and get out of town.  Newsome needs to return to the gang.  Callen and Sam will work on the organization’s leadership and where the guns are coming from.  Other agents will be assigned to watch Newsome.  Newsome is grateful for the help.
A distracted Rountree walks into Ops.  Fatima has Newsome’s activity reports on the big screen.  Noticing he’s texting, Fatima asks what’s going on.  Rountree tries to gloss over it but says his lawyer heard from LAPD.  He has news for Rountree once he knows what’s going on.  Fatima promises it is going to be alright.  Rountree is worried, Jordyn doesn’t need extra stress this week.  The two return to the case.  With the large cache of military weapons mentioned in Newsome’s reports, Fatima and Rountree think it is a good idea to call Nina Barnes (it is always a good idea to call Nina Barnes).
It's Kensi and Deeks’s turn to walk into the boat shed to talk to Newsome.  This time the Admiral does the intros.  Kensi and Deeks are overwatch.  Newsome is worried he’s been made.  After the Admiral points out the house used by the gunrunners in Malibu Canyon, Deeks knows the area.  Kilbride tells Kensi, Deeks and Newsome that he doesn’t want any cowboy stuff.  If Newsome has been found out, Newsome needs to hit the deck with Kensi and Deeks firing inside the house.
In an outdoor parking lot, Callen and Sam are meeting Nina Barnes.  Callen thinks this meeting should be Barnes’s store or roach coach.  Fatima warns Callen not to call the pastry truck a roach coach if he expects Barnes to help.  She’s meeting with angel investors to take her pastries national.
As they wait, Callen asks Sam if he is doing the right thing with Anna.  Sam says it doesn’t matter what he thinks, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.  And Sam thinks Callen is doing the right thing.  Sam is shocked – “G. Callen,  the nomad, the lone wolf, the shadow – about to be a married man.”  Callen asks if Sam planned his wedding.  Sam was lucky to go to his wedding.  Callen knew Michelle and she was nothing if not a taskmaster.  Sam stops and says “wow, a long time ago.”  Sam’s phone goes off.  Raymond is a candidate for a drug trial for his condition.  The people running the drug trial more information about Raymond.  That sounds like a good sign.
Looking at the big screen in Ops, Rountree notices Newsome’s finances are what they would expect but a second daughter is a Pepperdine without loans and driving a late model Range Rover.  That is too much money for college and transportation for someone with Newsome’s salary.  The ex-wife doesn’t have any money.  If Newsome is working with the gunrunners, NCIS could be walking into a trap as he protects his financial benefactors.
Still waiting for Nina Barnes, Callen asks if Sam has his best man’s speech ready to go.  Sam calls it a work in progress.  “Don’t tell the Damascus story,” Callen warns.  Sam is sad – the Damascus story is funny.  Barns walks up, saying hi to Sam and “other guy.”  She knows about the wedding, stating that she was married four times (twice to the same guy).  Saying she learned something about marriage, Callen asks if that is “you’re a joy to live with”?   He recommendation is “don’t do it” but she keeps getting married.
She knows a little about the organization Newsome has infiltrated.  They’re psychopaths who makes Russian bad guys look like Boy Scouts.  No name for the leader, the group runs very low to the ground and anyone who pushes is in big trouble.  Callen asks if Barnes couldn’t have told them all that info on the phone.  She could have but then she wouldn’t have seen Sam.  Callen is sighing.  Barnes says the organization has excellent intel.  Asked if that is coming from say an undercover ATF agent who may have flipped, Barnes is still checking.  She’ll have something for them at the end of the day along with their order for $200 worth of pastries.  She’s not working for free anymore.  Sam asks for red velvet cake and that will be part of the order.  She also promises same some lady fingers.
Callen calls into Ops.  He tells Fatima that he needs to speak to a Naval ordinance specialist.  That done, Callen thinks it is odd that Newsome is fine with NCIS backing him up and not his own agency.  Sam thinks Kilbride may have had a talk with Newsome.  Fatima asks if Callen needs a specific ordance specialist.  He doesn’t.  He just wants to look at the case from the weapons side.
In the Malibu Canyon, Deeks is worried about snakes.  The Daryl Donkins story comes up, wondering if Rosa knows about Deeks’s reptilian heroism.  Kensi and Deeks call in their location to the Admiral.  The Admiral mentions Newsome’s questionable financials.  Deeks thinks something is up – Newsome was just a bit too cool about what was going on.  Why would he meet with NCIS while undercover?  The Admiral thinks it was to see what NCIS knew about Newsome’s work.  Kensi and Deeks may be doing overwatch to provide Newsome with an alibi.  The Admiral thinks it could be a trap.  With the Admiral off comms, Kensi asks if Deeks is thinks what she’s thinking.  “That Thin Mints are the devil’s candy.”  Kensi gives him a look before Deeks goes professional.  He wants them to move their overwatch location if Newsome is setting up a trap.  Deeks tells Kensi he knows that she knows how lucky she is to have him as a partner.  “Lucky, lucky, me,” she tells Deeks.  “Just hashtag blessed,” is his reply.
Listening to music with her earbuds in, Anna hears a floor board creak.  She nearly kills Arkady, who let himself in after knocking and not getting an answer.  Anna called Arkady.  The wedding planning is getting to her.  He understands.  He thinks the only reason for marriage is to prepare a person for death.  She’s not thrilled with that particular thought.  Anna tells him about the band.  He suggests a number of Russian musicians but Anna doesn’t want the wedding to become Maslenitsa.  The good people at Google tell me that a Maslenitsa is “an ancient Orthodox Christian holiday celebrated in the last week before the Orthodox Lent. The festivities — also known as Pancake Week — are traditionally celebrated in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine and mark the end of winter.”  Arkady mentions there is always dancing at Maslenitsa, and who doesn’t like pancakes.
Anna said this was a bad idea.  Arkady agrees.  He’ll tell Grisha that the wedding was always a bad idea.  Calling Arkady an idiot, Anna makes it clear – the wedding is fine, calling Arkady for help was the bad idea.   Arkady suggests a Vegas DJ named Titan.  Bonus – Arkady plays Durak with Titan’s dad Aleksei.  Alesksei owes Arkady favors.  When he makes the call, Aleskei can get Titan to work the wedding with Callen and Anna figuring out how to pay.
Callen and Sam meet with Kerry Adams in the boat shed.  If Callen and Sam have any intel for her, Adams will be very impressed.  Sam says they are still working on some things, Adams says the same.  Callen thinks Newsome’s work is strong, the only question they have is financial when it comes to Newsome.  He’d also like to know why Adams had some initial suspicions about Newsome.  Sam pushes – what is Adams holding out on NCIS.  Adams says she is protecting her people and the ATF but she doesn’t suspect anyone.  Callen and Sam wonder about the other agencies Newsome works with including local law enforcement.
Sam’s phone rings – it is Raymond.  Taking the call in interrogation, Raymond tells Sam his shoulder hurts so he’s not working out that day.  It takes Sam a minute to realize Raymond isn’t home, he’s back at the park.  Raymond walked to the park and he wants to walk home.  Sam wants Raymond to take a seat.  Raymond hangs up.
Back in Ops, Rountree asks if Fatima found anything.  Newsome’s daughter has a college fund set up by her grandfather when she was born.  That clears the financials so Kilbride wants Fatima and Rountree to check out every law enforcement official Newsome has worked with during his career.  A real needle in a haystack.
In overwatch, Kensi sees two large Sprinter vans arriving at the Malibu house.  It could be a very big weapons delivery.
A Commander Collins is on a video call with the Admiral.  She is a weapons expert.  He briefs her on the case.  The munitions Fatima was able to inventory as part of the ATF investigation did not come from the Navy’s stockpiles.  She runs the inventory.  Nothing is missing.  Many of the items on the list, however, are common weapons used by militaries all over the world.  Collins will cross-reference the list Fatima sent to see who I using what.
Sam has a tracker on Raymond and finds him sitting, talking to a woman.  Raymond is charming.  Sam is frustrated, he was calling Raymond all the way over to the park.  Raymond has the phone on vibrate.  Too many telemarketers.  Raymond tries to introduce “Osama” to his new friend.  Sam pulls Raymond away.  Raymond doesn’t remember the morning workout, he thinks Sam is working too hard and forgetting what was going on.  The morning workout comes back to Raymond.
Sam pushed the clinical trials but Raymond is worried about it.  He saw a doctor on CNN who wouldn’t take any medical treatment after the age of 75.  Sam is confused – the doctor isn’t a Marine.  Why is Raymond doing, or not doing this?  Raymond decides he’s in.  They share some family stories as Sam walks Raymond to his car.
Manning overwatch, Deeks using a parabolic microphone so he can hear the bad guys playing video games inside the house.  Deeks wants an Xbox.  Kensi is struggling.  She’s sniffling and working hard to concentrate.  Thinking they need full body scans for Rosa’s sake, Deeks goes on a long rant about the Doomsday Clock.  Kensi, anti-Doomsday and anti-Clock.  Kensi sees a new person entering the home.
Inside the home, the new guy tells Newsome and some other gunrunning stooges that the boss has the money coming in so the “merch” needs to be ready to go.  Newsome, who is playing old-school pinball and not video games, asks about the “merch” and where the weapons are being held.  The new guy and Newsome get into it.  New guy pulls a knife on Newsome.  That was a mistake as Newsome chokes him out and relieves the new guy of his knife.  Newsome tells the new guy he can have his knife back when Newsome believes the new guy can handle it.  In overwatch, Kensi and Deeks are impressed.
Fatima pulls up Kerry Adams’s financials without a warrant or subpoena.  She’s dirty.  “We” have to tell the Admiral, Fatima says to Rountree.  Rountree isn’t so sure of the “we” part.
Kilbride calls into Callen and Sam.  Adams is dirty and has been for years.  The US Attorney’s Office can’t use the financials as a reason to indict Adams.  If Callen and Sam can catch her in the act, however, they may be able to bring her down.
Racing to Adams’s home, Callen and Sam drive into an underground garage just as Adams is being driven out.  Adams is shocked – has NCIS lost their minds.  That’s when the shooting starts.  In the back of Adams’s SUV, her driver pulls out a long gun and just lets loose on Callen, Sam and Sam’s car.  She pulls out an automatic weapon and joins in on the unloading fun.  Callen and Sam are hiding behind the Sam’s car as it is being blown to bits.
On comms, Fatima helpfully adds that they are outgunned and have to move.
What head canon can be formed from here:    A really solid start to wrap up the series.  Played on all the notes the program hit over 14-seasons – long-term undercover who may have been swallowed up by his role, corruption in federal agencies, relationships that matter to our heroes.
Loved the return of the show’s most recent “greatest hits” guest stars with Anna, Arkady, Rosa, Raymond and Nina Barnes, who the program should have found in season 10.
What is coming in part two was well set-up here.  I do think they did a good job cutting out the one scene.  Kensi and Deeks were sort of snotty to each other just after they had a lovely moment with Rosa and Deeks spoke about being in his happy place with his family.
A flaw in the storytelling – Adams gets NCIS involved because Newsome hasn’t called in to the office in days. Minutes later, he’s in the boat shed meeting with Castor, Callen, Sam, Kilbride, Kensi and Deeks.
Episode number:   Episode 20 of season 14.  Episode 322 overall.  322 episodes down, one to go.

Day 8 - Travelling home
We all left on Saturday, but at different times. I was actually one of the later ones scheduled to leave as my flight from Port-Au-Prince was not until 3:30 pm. I did, however, get up at 6:30 - because the rooster was up since much earlier, my roommate was on the 7 o’clock ride shuttle to the Jacmel airport, coffee would run out by 7 am, and most importantly, I wanted to say goodbye to my new friends. After such an emotional, exhausting week, an intense bond is readily formed between many of the team members...some old friends, and some new!
One last cold shower, and a quick pack job, and I was ready to go. Thank goodness I was ready early, because even though I was not scheduled to leave until noon, at 11 am my shuttle was ready - the charter plane was making great time in shuttling most of us back and forth, and was ready to go early. In the Jacmel  airport, our bags were completely searched, although we did not have to go through a metal detector. The flight in the 5 seater from Jacmel to Port au Prince was 20 minutes. From the plane, during this dry season, it was easy to see just how deforested the mountains are, and how much of the soil has washed out.  Flying into Port-au-Prince, our pilot had to slow for another small charter, but then again for a 767 who not only had to land, but also turn around on the THE s runway to taxi back to the main terminal. There is only one runway shared by all, but two terminals. I wasnt sure that I liked it when we slowed down that much...just how slow can you go before falling from the ski? We had to get a shuttle from the one terminal to the other.
Inside the commercial terminal, the line at Delta was long and not moving, which was stressful until we figured out that they had not started checking people in - although there were many hucksters saying they could get us through immediately if we just gave them our passport and $5! Once the ground crew started checking us in 3 hours before the flight, the line moved quickly.  No lines for immigration and security, and at this point they were letting people in with liquids....although a thorough search of luggage and metal detector was involved. We bought water, beer and snacks while we waited. Then when our plane was called we realized that we had to go through yet another security check, with a separate line for women and men (no transgender here) for a complete pat-down, as well as a baggage search. At this point the water that we had purchased had to be drunk or thrown away. I had opted for the former. The flight was fully packed, mostly with people finishing their mission trips.
Customs in Atlanta was tortuous... a long walk, winding lines, and woman who fell and split her head open (could I walk by and ignore her...?? Conscious called), another security check! But waiting for my connection, a delicious crunchy salad!! The second flight left early...can they do that?? How does that work...at at the far end, Rik was waiting to pick me up. It is wonderful to be home with him.
I questioned, both on this trip and the last one, is what we are doing helpful to anyone...but this time I realized that although we are not changing the system, we are bringing some medical care to some people. Without NGOs most Haitians would not receive any care...the government simply doesn’t pay doctors and nurses regularly to provide services, and it is well known that the government would not fairly distribute funds to provide medical care to those patients that need it - so YES, we are helpful to the patients and their families who would not receive treatment without CCH. And I am so fortunate to be able to work with the wonderful Haitian people.

Marcus, president and chief executive officer of The Marcus Corporation. “In what historically is a strong quarter, the team at Marcus Hotels & Resorts did not disappoint, delivering record revenue and operating income. Marcus Theatres reported record revenues and had yet another very profitable quarter, although its operating income was impacted by several one-time costs and a film mix that contributed to slightly higher film costs.” “For the first nine months of the year, The Marcus Corporation achieved record revenues, operating income and net earnings thanks to record revenues and operating income from both divisions,” said Marcus. Marcus also noted that net earnings continued to benefit from a lower income tax rate, particularly during the third quarter when results were favorably impacted by additional one-time tax benefits. Marcus  Hotels & Resorts Third-quarter revenues for Marcus Hotels & Resorts increased 4.9% in the third quarter and operating income was up 24.5% thanks to significant margin improvement. Revenue per available room (RevPAR) for comparable company-owned properties increased 5.2% in the third quarter, outperforming the industry by three percentage points during the quarter. “This was a very strong quarter for Marcus Hotels & Resorts, as evidenced by record revenue and operating income growth. Much credit for our revenue growth goes to our outstanding sales team, as our group business increased considerably across the majority of our properties. Meanwhile, our operating team did a tremendous job converting these revenue gains to profit. With baseball at its peak, some of our markets were also the beneficiaries of increased bookings connected to the 2018 MLB regular season drive for the playoffs,” said Marcus. During the quarter, the division assumed management of the newly constructed Courtyard by Marriott El Paso Downtown/Convention Center in El Paso, Texas. In addition, three Marcus Hotels & Resorts properties received the coveted Condé Nast Traveler 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards. The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee was voted the #4 Top Hotel in the Midwest by the publication’s readers, while the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa in Lake Geneva, Wis. ranked as the #6 Top Resort in the Midwest, and The Garland in North Hollywood, Calif. was recognized as the #9 Top Hotel in Los Angeles. Marcus Theatres  Revenues for Marcus Theatres increased 5.2% in the third quarter, compared to the same period last year. In addition to increased depreciation and a film mix that contributed to higher film costs this quarter, operating income was also impacted by several one-time items. In addition, the same baseball dynamic that helped our hotels resulted in lower attendance at some of our theatres in key markets such as Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Louis. “After a busy second quarter opening up new amenities, we continued to invest in our theatres in the third quarter, including adding DreamLoungerSM recliner seating to one more location and converting an additional auditorium to our SuperScreen DLX® format. We are looking forward to the holiday season, with several additional projects underway,” said Rolando Rodriguez, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Marcus Theatres. The five top-performing films for Marcus Theatres in the third quarter of fiscal 2018 were Incredibles 2; Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom; Ant-Man and the Wasp; Mission Impossible – Fallout; and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. Rodriguez said the fourth quarter is off to a good start with successful October films including Venom; A Star is Born; First Man; and Halloween. Additional films opening during the popular holiday season include The Nutcracker and the Four Realms; Bohemian Rhapsody; Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch; Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald; Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It; Creed II; Mary Poppins Returns; Bumblebee; Aquaman; and Holmes and Watson. The Decline of Brett Gardner [2018 Season Review]
Three things the two 2018 World Series teams should reaffirm for the Yankees
Good Guy Brett Gardner. (Getty Images)
From his humble beginnings as a fourth outfielder to becoming a respected veteran leader in the Yankees’ clubhouse, Brett Gardner has been a constant in the Bronx for the last 11 seasons. The speedy outfielder never lost his glove or impressive eye at the plate while developing power and becoming a valuable contributor.
However, despite a sixth straight season (and eighth straight full season) with at least 2.5 WAR, Gardner may have played his final year in pinstripes. He went from the Opening Day leadoff hitter to the bench over the course of the year, once again running into a cold second half.
Another strong start
Gardner has always been a streaky hitter and his age-34 season was no exception. Coming off his career-best 21-homer season, he quickly hit his first of the year on Opening Day in Toronto. However, he wouldn’t hit another until May 26. After a two-hit game on April 11, the outfielder carried a .767 OPS. That would crater over the next month as he couldn’t seem to hit the side of a barn until early May.
As the Yankees hit their stride in May, so did Gardner, who produced a three-hit game against Boston. That May 9 game was one of Gardner’s shining moments as he lined a go-ahead two-run triple off Craig Kimbrel to continue the Yankees’ win streak.
Gardner would reach base in all but one start for the next month while playing every day. Beginning with a four-hit game against the Astros on May 29, Gardner’s OPS reached .741 and wouldn’t dip below .700 until the end of August.
And just as he was in 2017, Gardner found himself coming through in the clutch on a regular basis. Two of his four hits on May 29 vs. Houston were home runs and the second dinger tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. Just over a week later, he took Jacob deGrom deep for a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning.
When the first half closed, Gardner was batting .254/.345/.403 (106 wRC+) with 10 home runs, featuring all but a little less power than he had in 2017.
Second half slump
Unfortunately, Gardner has a penchant for wearing down as a season goes on. Aaron Boone had hoped to give him more days off this season and, for the most part, he accomplished that goal. Gardner started eight fewer games in the first half of 2018 compared to 2017. However, Aaron Hicks’ early oblique injury forced the veteran outfielder into more consistent action in April.
No matter the playing time, Gardner’s bat faded in the late summer yet again. Overall, he hit just .209/.288/.316 (66 wRC+) with just three home runs after the break. His average exit velocity increased slightly, but his walk rate fell from 11.7 to 9.1 percent while his strikeout rate spiked to 21.6 from 14.9 percent.
Aaron Judge’s broken wrist, as well as Giancarlo Stanton’s balky hamstring, made sitting Gardner less possible as the alternative was often Shane Robinson. The southpaw started 27 games and playing in every single game during the month of August.
Benched
September likely was the beginning of the end for Gardner in pinstripes as Andrew McCutchen came over in a trade from San Francisco. Cutch replaced Gardy at the top of the lineup and made Gardner a constant at the bottom of the order for the first time since the start of the decade.
When Judge returned, Gardner was relegated to the bench, although he still found himself in center field often enough as Hicks dealt with injuries. Gardner failed to homer in September, his first month without a home run since 2015. He still saved a game with his glove!
When the playoffs came, he was all but set to be a defensive replacement for McCutchen and/or pinch runner. He played the final two innings of the Wild Card Game, a year after homering in the one-game playoff. However, he received at-bats in all four games of the Division Series after Hicks dealt with another injury. He went 0-for-8 with three walks.
Sliding into your home plate like… (Jim McIsaac/Getty)
Stout defense and baserunning
Despite the decline at the plate, Gardner remained reliable on the bases and in the outfield. He produced 11 defensive runs saved, down from 20 a year ago but right in line with the 12 he had in his Gold Glove 2016 season. In fact, his 8.4 UZR/150 was actually better than 2016, although still a little down from 2017. His Outs Above Average declined from five to zero.
Gardner played a little more center field than in 2017, likely due to Jacoby Ellsbury’s absence. He held his own in center and rated as a positive there. He took over left field from McCutchen in ALDS Game 4 but missed a crucial ball that went for an RBI double for Ian Kinsler.
On the base paths, he stole 16 bases and was caught just twice. At 29.2 ft/s, Gardner’s sprint speed was actually higher than 2017 according to Statcast, making him the fastest Yankee yet again. Both Baseball Reference and Fangraphs’ metrics graded him well on baserunning.
What’s next?
Now here comes the hard part. Gardner has a $12.5 million option with a $2 million buyout. For luxury tax purposes, the buyout was already factored into his AAV the last four years, so he’d be a $10.5 million player for the Yankees in 2019. Still, it seems that the Yankees will opt to part ways and take the buyout.
At 35 years old, he’s still a much-needed lefty bat in the lineup, but that shouldn’t stop the Yankees from pursuing an upgrade. The team could potentially have an upgrade in-house with Clint Frazier while Ellsbury may very well take over as a fourth outfielder-type (outside of his inevitable DL stints).
In theory, the Yankees could exercise the option and then try to trade him, but Gardner has attained 10/5 rights that kicked in this past season.
The end is never pretty, but if that was it for Gardner in pinstripes, it was a wonderful 11 seasons and he more than earned the respect and admiration of Yankee fans.
Three things the two 2018 World Series teams should reaffirm for the Yankees

March Madness: Breaking down the 2018 NCAA Tournament bracket
youtube
New voice, same tradition. As always, let’s kick this off with just how difficult it is for a low seed to get far in the NCAA Tournament: no 16-seed has ever knocked off a No. 1 seed in the opening round, and only eight No. 15’s have upset their second-seeded counterparts (though it has happened three times in the past six years). Only nine teams seeded 13th or worse have survived the opening weekend, and just one team seeded No. 12 or lower – the 2002 Missouri Tigers – has lasted to the Elite Eight.
As for the famed Final Four? Only one double-digit seed – the 2016 Syracuse Orange as a No. 10 – has ever made it that far.
Now that you’re well versed on the history of longshots, let’s examine one key betting trend for all 68 teams in the tournament:
1 SEEDS
Virginia (31-2 SU, 20-9 ATS, 10-20 O/U): The Cavaliers are once again one of the best Under plays in the nation, going above the total just twice in 11 true road games. But that’s what happens when you surrender just 52.8 points per game during the regular season – 4 1/2 points fewer than the next closest team, and 8 1/2 points fewer than the No. 3-ranked defense in the country.
youtube
Villanova (30-4 SU, 22-12 ATS, 23-11 O/U): The Wildcats were one of the best Over options in the country in their own arena, going 11-2 O/U at home – including each of their final seven contests at The Pavilion, a streak that saw them average a sizzling 90 points per game. Not surprisingly, Villanova covered in six of those games.
Kansas (27-7 SU, 18-14-1 ATS, 16-16-1 O/U): For everything that the Jayhawks do well, getting to the free-throw line – and converting – isn’t one of them. Kansas attempted just 501 foul shots during the regular season – ranking 322nd out of 351 Division I schools – and made only 350 of them, also good for 322nd overall.
youtube
Xavier (28-5 SU, 21-12 ATS, 18-14-1 O/U): The Musketeers showed real mettle away from Cintas Center, covering the spread in eight of 11 true road games. But Xavier was a much stronger Over play in its own barn during the regular season, going above the total 12 times in 18 home games compared to a 5-6 O/U mark on the road.
2 SEEDS
Cincinnati (30-4 SU, 16-14-1 ATS, 11-20 O/U): The Bearcats were the only team other than Virginia to allow fewer than 58 points per game (57.3) – and they really turned up the defensive pressure on the road, allowing no more than 62 points in any of their final nine away games during the regular season.
Purdue (28-6 SU, 15-17-1 ATS, 15-17-1 O/U): The Boilermakers are the top 3-point shooting team in the tournament, connecting on 42 percent of their attempts during the season. But they played some of their worst basketball down the stretch, covering just one of their final 13 games – including three SU losses in games in which they were favored.
Duke (26-7 SU, 20-11 ATS, 17-14 O/U): The Blue Devils took care of business at both ends of the court, finishing the regular season as the only team in the nation ranked in the top six in scoring offense (85.1 ppg) and rebounding (42.0 rpg). Duke also ended the ACC campaign as a strong Under play, going below the total in six straight.
youtube
North Carolina (25-10 SU, 19-14-1 ATS, 19-15 O/U): It was a streaky end to the season for the Tar Heels, who had a five-game cover streak sandwiched between two three game cover-less stretches. On the plus side, North Carolina led all of Division I in average rebounding margin at plus-10.7, edging out Michigan State (plus-10.4).
youtube
3 SEEDS
Tennessee (25-8 SU, 18-13 ATS, 13-18 O/U): Keeping the Vols off the line and inside the arc will be the key to success; Tennessee ranks 39th nationally in foul shooting (75.8 percent) and 49th in 3-point success rate (38.1 percent) but sit well outside the top 250 Division I schools in 2-point shooting at just 47.4 percent.
youtube
Michigan (28-7 SU, 21-11-1 ATS, 15-16-2 O/U): The surging Wolverines caught fire offensively down the stretch, surpassing their season scoring average in eight of their final nine games heading into the Big Dance; not surprisingly, they went 6-1-2 O/U in that span while covering in all but one of those contests.
youtube
Michigan State (29-4 SU, 15-16-2 ATS, 16-16 O/U): The Spartans were an offensive force this season, leading the nation in assists per game (19.3) while boasting the third-best scoring margin (plus-16.2); yet, despite its offensive success, Michigan State managed just two Overs in nine true road games this season compared to an 11-5 O/U mark at home.
Texas Tech (24-9 SU, 13-15-1 ATS, 13-16 O/U): The Red Raiders’ normally-solid defense stumbled at the end of the regular season, allowing an average of 78 points over the final four games – 13.5 more than their season average. That resulted in a stretch of four straight Overs, each going above by more than eight points.
  4 SEEDS
Auburn (25-7 SU, 19-11 ATS, 15-15 O/U): The Tigers stumbled to the finish line, failing to cover in four of their final five games – including a pair of SU losses as a favorite. But this team knows how to generate offense from the foul line – it led the nation in made free throws (605) while ranking 11th in attempts (767).
Arizona (27-7 SU, 14-18-2 ATS, 16-17 O/U): Plenty of eyes will be on Wildcats big man Deandre Ayton, who averaged an impressive 22 points and 15.2 rebounds over his final five regular-season contests. Yet, despite Ayton’s hot streak, Arizona covered just twice in that span while going Under the total four times in those five games.
Wichita State (25-7 SU, 12-18 ATS, 20-10 O/U): If you’re looking for a trendy Over play heading into the Tournament, look no further than the Shockers. They reeled off 10 consecutive Overs before seeing their streak come to a halt in their regular-season finale against a Cincinnati team that boasts the second-best scoring defense in the country.
youtube
Gonzaga (30-4 SU, 14-16-1 ATS, 15-16 O/U): The Bulldogs have been one of the safer early-round bets come tournament time, covering in five of their previous eight March Madness openers (while falling just 3 1/2 points short of making it six of eight last season.) They have also gone Under in five of their past eight tournament kickoffs.
youtube
5 SEEDS
West Virginia (24-10 SU, 15-15 ATS, 15-15 O/U): Few teams work the offensive glass better than the Mountaineers; their 14.2 offensive rebounds per game ranked fourth nationally, while they hauled in nearly 35 percent of all available offensive boards during the season – the eighth-best rate in the country.
Kentucky (24-10 SU, 17-17 ATS, 12-13 O/U): Remember that four-game losing skid earlier in the season – the Wildcats’ longest since 2009? Neither do they. Kentucky won four of five to close out the regular season, with an average margin of victory of 16 points in those four triumphs; all five games went Over.
Ohio State (24-8 SU, 15-15 ATS, 9-21 O/U): The Buckeyes had one of the strongest Under slants of any team in the country this season, but ended the year with a flourish – going above the total in three of their final four contests. They also failed to cover in four of their final five contests to finish a dead-even 15-15 ATS.
Clemson (23-9 SU, 17-12 ATS, 15-14 O/U): Only eight teams were better defenders on 2-point shots than the Tigers, who held foes to 43.9 percent from inside the arc. Clemson was also one of the best home covers in the NCAA, going 10-3 ATS at Littlejohn Coliseum – though two of those non-covers came in their final three home games.
6 SEEDS
Miami (22-9 SU, 11-15 ATS, 13-13 O/U): It was a tale of two seasons for the Hurricanes, at least from a cover standpoint. Miami was positively dreadful in its own building, failing to cover over their final eight home games. Contrast that to the Hurricanes’ strong road play; they were 8-4 ATS in 12 games away from Watsco Center.
TCU (21-11 SU, 16-13-2 ATS, 21-10 O/U): The Horned Frogs kept the points all year long, finishing the regular season as one of only five teams to post 20 or more Overs. TCU was particularly prolific in its own arena, boasting a 13-4 O/U mark on the strength of a 56.9-percent effective field goal rate that ranks 13th nationally.
Houston (26-7 SU, 18-10-1 ATS, 13-16 O/U): The Cougars were a bettor’s dream at home, going 8-2-1 ATS in 11 games at Hofheinz Pavilion. Houston also enters the tournament as a strong Over option, going above the total in five of their final seven games – including two of three in the AAC Tournament.
Florida (20-12 SU, 15-15-1 ATS, 14-16 O/U): The Gators really tightened things up to close out the regular season, cashing the Under in eight of their final 10 games. And they’re one of the most careful teams with the basketball in all of Division I, having committed the fourth-fewest turnovers (305).
7 SEEDS
Texas A&M (20-12 SU, 13-16 ATS, 15-14 O/U): The Aggies were relentless in the post as the only team in the nation ranked in the top six in total rebounds (41.3) and blocked shots per game (5.9). But they come into the NCAA Tournament in a bit of a lull, having covered just twice in their previous seven games.
Arkansas (23-11 SU, 17-16-1 ATS, 18-15 O/U): The Razorbacks racked up the Overs down the stretch, going above the number in six of their final eight games. But Arkansas will need to be better at keeping opponents off the line; foes made 17.4 foul shots on 24 attempts per game, both ranking in the bottom-25 nationally.
Nevada (27-7 SU, 16-14-3 ATS, 17-15-1 O/U): The Mountain West Conference powerhouse spread the ball around like few other teams in Division I, sporting a 1.63 assist-to-turnover ratio that ranks second in the country. But Nevada sputtered to the finish line, covering just one of their final six games.
Rhode Island (25-7 SU, 16-13-1 ATS, 15-15 O/U): Few teams covered as regularly at home as the Rams, who made good on 10 of their 14 games at Ryan Center. But Rhode Island managed just two covers over its final five games, a stretch that included three straight-up losses as a favorite.
  8 SEEDS
Seton Hall (21-11 SU, 16-16 ATS, 19-12 O/U): The Pirates flirted with a top-25 ranking for part of the season but couldn’t make their free throws count; they were the only Big East Conference team to shoot below 70 percent from the line. Seton Hall finished the year with eight Overs over their final 10 games.
Creighton (21-11 SU, 14-16 ATS, 16-14 O/U): The Bluejays shot well from just about everywhere this season, but were especially prolific inside the arc – knocking down 59.4 percent of their 2-point attempts, the fourth-best rate in the country. Creighton enters March Madness with four Overs in its past five games.
Missouri (20-12 SU, 16-15 ATS, 12-19 O/U): After major defensive lapses in losses to Ole Miss and Kentucky, the Tigers ratcheted up the D over their final three games, going Under in all three; they have seven Unders in their past 10 games overall. Their minus-3.0 turnover differential ranks 330th in Division I.
Virginia Tech (21-11 SU, 17-11 ATS, 14-14 O/U): Few teams enter the NCAA Tournament as a hotter Under option than the Hokies, who have gone below the total in nine consecutive games. Only nine Division I schools shot better from two-point territory than Virginia Tech, which connected at a 49.8-percent clip from that range.
9 SEEDS
Alabama (19-15 SU, 17-15-1 ATS, 12-21 O/U): Betting on the Crimson Tide to go below the total at home would have made you a very rich wagerer this past season; Alabama went just 3-12 O/U at Coleman Coliseum, though two of those Overs came in Alabama’s final three home contests.
N.C. State (21-11 SU, 13-12 ATS, 14-11 O/U): The Wolfpack finished just outside the top 50 nationally in field-goal percentage (47.0) but struggled on the boards, pulling down just 69.9 percent of available defensive rebounds – good for 305th in the country. They also ranked 300th in blocks against per game (4.0).
Kansas State (22-11 SU, 14-16 ATS, 11-18-1 O/U): The Wildcats go into March Madness as one of the worst Over options of any team in the tournament – and this was especially true at home, where they surpassed the number just four times all season. Kansas State also ranked 340th in rebounding (30.1).
Florida State (20-11 SU, 15-13-1 ATS, 17-12 O/U): The Seminoles are sputtering at the moment, at least from a bettor’s perspective; they’ve covered just twice in their previous 10 games – and one of those covers came by a half-point. They also went Under in four of their final five true road games entering the tournament.
10 SEEDS
Texas (19-14 SU, 15-14 ATS, 14-14-1 O/U): Sharing the basketball is not the Longhorns’ forte; they produce just 0.47 assists per made field goal, ranking among the 25 worst teams in the country in that category. Texas did, however, convert the W/O combo in three of its final four games.
Butler (20-13 SU, 15-17 ATS, 19-13 O/U): The Bulldogs knocked down 77.1 percent of their free throws, tied for 20th nationally. But they were positively putrid on the road this season, covering just twice in 10 true away encounters; they also failed to cover either of their games in the Big East Tournament.
Providence (21-13 SU, 14-18 ATS, 15-16-1 O/U): As much attention as the Friars get for going to overtime in three straight Big East Tournament games, don’t overlook the fact that they covered all three – and are 5-1 SU in their past six games. But Providence averages just 6.4 made 3s per game, second-fewest in the conference.
Oklahoma (18-13 SU, 10-20 ATS, 18-12 O/U): Sensational Sooners guard Trae Young recorded 11 point-assist double-doubles this season; Oklahoma went 9-2 SU in those contests, but have dropped two in a row. Oklahoma was one of the worst road covers in Division I, going just 2-9 ATS.
11 SEEDS
Syracuse (20-13 SU, 14-17 ATS, 14-17 O/U): The Orange were frustratingly inconsistent entering March madness, alternating Overs and Unders over their final eight games. Syracuse’s 47.1 percent adjusted field goal rate ranks 14th out of 15 teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and among the worst 30 teams in the nation.
San Diego State (22-10 SU, 20-10 ATS, 14-14-2 O/U): The Aztecs streaked their way into the NCAA Tournament, winning nine consecutive games while covering the spread in eight of them. San Diego State placed five players in double figures in scoring, but none of them shot better than 38.5 percent from beyond the arc.
UCLA (21-11 SU, 16-16 ATS, 18-14 O/U): The Bruins will likely live and die by their rebounding average; they finished 15th in the country in defensive boards per game (28.5). Look for some high-scoring affairs from UCLA, which went 7-3 O/U in 10 true road games this season.
youtube
Loyola-Chicago (28-5 SU, 19-9-1 ATS, 12-17 O/U): The Ramblers are rumbling into tournament week on a defensive roll, posting five consecutive unders while allowing more than 54 points just once in that span. Loyola-Chicago is one of the top road cover teams in the field of 68, going 8-3-1 ATS.
St. Bonaventure (25-7 SU, 15-14 ATS, 16-13 O/U): The Bonnies weren’t exactly a friendly sort this season, ranking outside the top 300 in fewest fouls per game (20.0) with 22 foul-outs on the year. But St. Bonaventure has covered five consecutive times when the spread has been two or fewer points.
Arizona State (20-11 SU, 14-15-2 ATS, 15-14-2 O/U): The Sun Devils were a dud when it came to road covers, converting just twice with a pair of pushes in 10 true away games. But their second-half offense was no joke, as they finished third in the nation in points per game after the half (44.5).
youtube
  12 SEEDS
Murray State (26-5 SU, 17-11 ATS, 14-14 O/U): The Racers made Under bettors incredibly happy down the stretch, going below the total in six of their final seven games. And Murray State limited opponents to just 9.8 assists per game during the season, seventh-fewest in all of Division I.
New Mexico State (28-5 SU, 6-2-2 ATS, 3-7 O/U): The Aggies have been a nightmare for opposing offenses, holding opponents to a 45.5-percent effective field-goal rate; only five other teams were stingier. New Mexico State is also a behemoth on the boards, averaging 41.6 rebounds per game – fourth-most in the nation.
Davidson (21-11 SU, 18-12-1 ATS, 13-18 O/U): When it comes to taking care of the basketball, the Wildcats do it better than anyone – their 1.80 assist-to-turnover ratio is significantly better than runner-up Nevada (1.65). And Davidson is rolling at the right time, with covers in six of its previous seven games.
South Dakota State (28-6 SU, 19-9 ATS, 15-13 O/U): The Jackrabbits have won 11 straight coming into this one, covering eight times over that span. But was a tale of two seasons from an Over/Under standpoint, as South Dakota State posted just two Overs in 10 home games while going 10-2 O/U in 12 true road contests.
13 SEEDS
Buffalo (26-8 SU, 16-12-3 ATS, 19-12 O/U): The Bulls have been favored by at least 7 1/2 points in each of their past six games – and they’ve come through with big performances, covering five times over that stretch. But they’ll need to curb their enthusiasm come tournament time – their 21.2 fouls per game rank in the bottom 20 nationally.
Marshall (24-10 SU, 20-11 ATS, 16-15 O/U): The Thundering Herd have peaked heading into March Madness, making good on four consecutive covers – including a pair of SU wins as an underdog of 5 1/2 points or more. Only four teams finished the year with a higher blocked shots average than Marshall (5.9).
Charleston (26-7 SU, 15-13-1 ATS, 17-12 O/U): The Cougars ratcheted up the offense late in the season, scoring 80 or more points in eight of their final 10 games; not surprisingly, they converted the Over eight times in that stretch. Charleston also takes great care of the ball, ranking fourth nationally at 9.6 turnovers per game.
UNC Greensboro (27-7 SU, 17-9-1 ATS, 11-16 O/U): The Spartans have bucked the trend on low totals, going Under in six of their last seven games when the number is 135 or lower. The catalyst: UNC Greensboro holds opponents to fewer than 21 made field goals per game, third-fewest in Division I.
14 SEEDS
Bucknell (25-9 SU, 5-5 ATS, 4-4 O/U): Distance means everything to the Bison on offense – they rank outside the top 200 in Division I in 3-point shooting (34.1 percent) but are a top-25 team from inside the arc (55.6 percent). They also sit third in the country in total free-throw attempts (844)
Montana (26-7 SU, 19-11-1 ATS, 19-12 O/U): The Grizzlies were the top Over play among Big Sky teams and carried that trend into the conference tournament, exceeding the total in all three games by at least 10 1/2 points. But Montana makes just 5.5 3-pointers per contest, good for 330th in the country.
Wright State (25-9 SU, 18-13-1 ATS, 12-20 O/U): Don’t let the Raiders’ Over/Under record fool you – nine of those Overs came in true road games, while another two occurred in neutral-site games; they were a combined 11-7 O/U away from home. Wright State also ended the season with four straight covers.
Stephen F. Austin (28-6 SU, 4-1 ATS, 2-3 O/U): The Lumberjacks are the NCAA’s ultimate ball hawks – they ranked first in the nation in forced turnovers per game (20.0) and were the only team to average double-digit steals (10.3). But they also committed a whopping 743 fouls, second-most in Division I.
15 SEEDS
Georgia State (24-10 SU, 19-11 ATS, 16-14 O/U): The Panthers converted the cover-Under combo three straight times in the Sun Belt Tournament after going an unbelievable 10-2 O/U in their previous 12 contests. But free-throw woes could be their undoing; they  have shot just 67.6 percent from the line, good for 300th overall.
Iona (20-13 SU, 15-14 ATS, 16-12-1 O/U): The Gaels provided plenty of excitement for opposing teams’ fans this past season, exceeding the total in nine of their 12 true road games – including their final three away contests of the campaign, in which they went Over by an average of 30.2 points.
Lipscomb (23-9 SU, 4-2 ATS, 3-3 O/U): The Bison lost major steam after halftime in 2017-18, allowing more than 43 second-half points per game – ranking in the bottom 15 nationwide in that category. They did, however, rank in the top 10 in Division I in free-throw makes (580) and attempts (811).
CS Fullerton (20-11 SU, 18-9 ATS, 8-19 O/U): The Titans were an interesting betting option, particularly away from home; they went 9-4 ATS in 13 true road games, and six of their eight Over conversions came away from Titan Gym. They also hit the cover-Under combo in all three games of the Big West Tournament.
16 SEEDS
LIU Brooklyn (18-16 SU, 3-4 ATS, 2-4 O/U): The Blackbirds were one of only three teams in the Northeast Conference to shoot below 70 percent from the free-throw line (69.6), but shot a modestly better 71.2 percent in the conference tournament. LIU Brooklyn’s 27.4 rebounds per game rank just outside the top 40 in the country.
Radford (22-14 SU, 5-4 ATS, 3-6 O/U): The Highlanders have gone below the total in each of their previous four lined games, including all three contests they have played in the month of March. Radford has made just two Tournament appearances prior to this year, and lost both by a combined 79 points.
Penn (24-8 SU, 13-14 ATS, 17-10 O/U): Those Quakers were a lively bunch away from The Palestra, going 12-4 O/U in 16 true road and neutral-site games on the season. But rebounding has been a hit-and-miss task for Penn, which ranks fifth nationally in defensive boards (29.0) but are 286th in offensive rebounding (8.7).
Texas Southern (15-19 SU, 6-1 ATS, 4-3 O/U): The SWAC champions won the conference title in style, averaging 87.3 points per game while going Over the total in all three tournament contests. The Tigers also come into the tournament having made the second-most free throws in the country (618).
UMBC (24-10 SU, 3-1-1 ATS, 2-2 O/U): The Retrievers certainly lived up to their name this season – their plus-2.7 average turnover differential ranked inside the top 40 among Division I schools. But free-throw shooting has been a major problem for UMBC, which has hit just 65 percent of its foul shots.
North Carolina Central (19-15 SU, 5-1 ATS, 3-3 O/U): The Eagles enter their third NCAA Tournament on a five-game cover streak, and are 14-5-1 ATS in their past 20 neutral-site games. But North Carolina Central ranks outside the top 300 in 3-point makes (6.0) and attempts (18.0) per game.
