Also, spinal misalignment, scoliosis & kyphosis can usually still be corrected in children & young adults without surgery, if you shop sound for the right doctor & expert. If you leave it until adulthood, it takes a lot more to treat it, and unless you know exactly what caused it & a fair amount of your family's medical history, you're gonna be given the option of physical therapy to manage the pain or surgery which won't guarantee less pain at all.

Hot tip for parents both present and future: When your kid tells you something is wrong, listen to them!
Sorry for not posting much lately, I’ve been busy with work and personal stuff, including an upcoming spinal x-ray I’ve been waiting over a decade for and the angriest doctor I’ve ever met in my life
#I'm 24 & have had my idiopathic scoliosis tracked since i was 8(?)#from 8 - 12 it was still possible for my spine to fix itself via growth sprouts - it was a coin flip...#...whether they'd fix it or make it worse#so i decided i wanted to wait rather than treat it#i also got taken to a chiropractor around this time (i know i know) for maybe a year???#by 15 my spine had gone from slightly curved to a full 'S'#from 15 - 17 i was offered surgery more than 10 times#i refused all of them because i didn't trust doctors or surgeons enough to put my entire life & future in their hands#I'd had surgery on my ribcage twice by then i KNEW how much i needed to trust them to let them operate on my spine#and that was a trust they didn't have#i haven't had an xray since then & I went to physio for maybe 8 months total from 18 - 20#at 23 i discovered somatic therapy for scoliosis & it treats it holistically by working on the muscles AROUND the spine...#...which impact it & determine its placement & position & strength etc#I have now been doing that inconsistently for around 9 months & have straightened my lower spine#i can run my fingers over my vertibrae & they're in a staight line down the center of my lower back#i am continuing with somatic therapy to straighten my upper spine too#is it easy? no. is it emotionally draining? sometimes. do i sometimes overlook it or procrastinate doing it because im tired or bored? yes.#however... is it worth it? yes. do i wish a doctor had given me this option at least once over the past 10+ years? yes.#am i lowley angry at the fact i got told i couldn't cure it with surgery AS A CHILD but am now straightening it myself as an adult...#...while KNOWING if i mention this to a doctor who doesn't “believe in” holistic treatments then I'll be laughed at or told to stop? YES.#i plan on getting a spinal checkup later this yesr at a specialist clinic i spent 4 months researching because i wanna SEE my spine#and i wanna be able to talk about this out loud#I've had genetic testing & as far as i was told there was no cause or underlying reason for my scoliosis - so it's idiopathic#(meaning drs dont know what caused it)#my mother also has idiopathic scoliosis & ive watched her body deteriorate over the laat 12+ years because she has not been treated...#...for it aince she was a child & the only treatment back then was putting a lift in her shoes to compensate#it did nothing to help & she's tried acupuncture for the pain but hasn't had the spine treated since she was 12(?)#and honestly???? im terrified of losing control of my body the way she has lost control of hers#so am i willing to risk doing somatic therapy if it is the only thing which has given me hope of control & a future with a straight spine???#yes. a million times yes.

SpineCor Scoliosis Brace: Importance in Treating Scoliosis
Tumblr media
For a condition like scoliosis, treatment options available can vary based on the severity of the problem. The traditional scoliosis treatment approach involves a full-time Boston Brace where the ultimate goal is stopping progression. Since scoliosis is a progressive condition, it worsens over time if left untreated. That’s where the traditional scoliosis approach is effective but this approach has its limits. It doesn’t have a strategy to address the core problem rather it just focuses on preventing progression. This is the reason a traditional scoliosis brace is often considered a reactive treatment approach, and the SpineCor scoliosis brace is often considered a more proactive treatment option.
Importance of Timely Treatment of Scoliosis—SpineCor Scoliosis Brace
When scoliosis worsens over time, one can witness an increase in the size of an unnatural spinal curve, which then later leads to a range of physical implications and muscular imbalances. The physical deformities and weaknesses in muscles lead to pain and discomfort and also raise numerous challenges in day-to-day activities. Knowing how scoliosis can lead to complications in the body, it’s important to treat it on time.
Instead of a traditional brace, you must go for a conservative scoliosis treatment approach—SpineCor Scoliosis Brace which is a dynamic corrective SpineCor brace designed to treat scoliosis. Many patients found with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis and De-Novo Scoliosis have witnessed effective results after using this Brace as a treatment option. It is currently the most flexible and dynamic brace for scoliosis. The conservative strategy is proactive and works best when correcting scoliosis, in contrast to the typical treatment technique. It not only helps in preventing further progression but also corrects scoliosis on a structural level. The SpineCor brace is set up and tailored to the patient’s specific scoliosis location and orientation. The physician or the chiropractor will guide you about the schedule of wearing and the length of the treatment will depend on the severity of the condition and diagnosis done. Ya know, as someone who suffers from a physical disability myself who read your recent post, i'm sorta curious for more details on how both Scalene and Bill viewed their shared condition. Scalene in particular, by your post, seems to have had a weird combination of pride in it (how it made her exotic and all) but also, being ashamed of mentioning it and going out of her way to medically correct it in her own child...How would you describe her, and, for that matter, Bill's, feelings?
(For anyone arriving late, this is a follow up on this post here.)
You know how some disabilities end up with a public perception where they're adored for certain "positive" aspects but people still don't understand (and are ableist about) the less positive aspects? Like how depression is romantic when it's "brood romantically like a goth heroine" but gross when it's "can't get out of bed, shower, or meet social obligations"; autism is cute when it's "hand-flapping stimming and getting super interested in a topic" but annoying when it's "noisy stimming & body rocking, won't stop talking about a topic I'm not interested in, and poor social skills"; or the face of albinism is "supermodel with porcelain skin, snow white hair, and crystal blue eyes" and never "cross-eyed sunburned dude perpetually squinting in the sunlight"?
I imagine that her condition is like that, and that she zealously latched onto the positive perception of her condition and worked that for all it's worth; but she wants to be perfect, she wants to be admirable, she wants to be beloved, so the parts of her condition that aren't "popular" have to get hidden and dealt with privately as much as possible. The pageant stage is for showing off her curves; standing funny to try to relieve her side pain is for when people aren't watching.
It's okay to have a disability, but god forbid you look disabled.
Though I wouldn't characterize the medical treatment she got for Bill "going out of her way" to try to correct it. For the most part, things like braces & physical therapy weren't for aesthetics or public perception, but actual quality of life improvements. Without that early intervention, he'd be dealing with serious chronic pain & mobility issues before adulthood.
It's like how if you have significant scoliosis as a child, wearing a back brace during your puberty growing years helps protect you from getting such a crooked back as an adult that you need spinal surgery for the pain. Even if you have no negative feelings about having scoliosis, avoiding a major invasive surgery in 30 years is probably a sound medical decision.
... It just turned out with Bill that more benign issues got swept in with the actual problems.
For Bill's part, the condition is something he'd been led to believe as a child would be a much bigger problem in his life than it ended up being. For one thing, the way the condition presented in him made him a squishy baby, but not as flexible as his mom as an adult. (Though she also worked to increase her flexibility, against every single doctor's advice ever.) And for another, he got turned into an energy being more or less at peak health, after all his childhood medical interventions did their job and before his condition inevitably started to decline in adulthood; and when he doesn't age, doesn't change, doesn't even have a physical body, the condition doesn't progress. He got the best possible outcome, and he feels weird about it.
He'd never claim he's unhappy to not be dealing with chronic pain—that'd be a dumb thing to be unhappy about, and anyway Bill is sooo happy and mentally healthy and nothing ever bothers him ever!!!—but, unspoken, he has a strange sense of loss around it. Another thing missing from the life he "should" have had. Caught in a perpetual limbo where Health Problems™ are always looming 10-15 years in front of him, and have been looming 10-15 years in front of him for a trillion years.

this is VERY random but I felt like would be a funny write.. so i'm like 98% sure I have scoliosis and I am going in for an appointment soon (my spine when someone runs their finger on it is literally curved as an s, and I have a lot of the symptoms, sigh.) , but- modern!mizu x reader with scoliosis plspls?? it doesn't need to be much, it could just be headcanons, or writing, but maybe she helps reader out with body positivity because the readers self image gets tainted after being diagnosed with it, and they have it kinda severe and are ashamed of needing to use a back brace. She is just there for the reader through it all, even if reader needs surgery and is MORTIFIED of spinal injections and hates needles. just something comforting would work if you end up writing for this, thank you!! :)

Hey dear!
Sorry this took a while! My hand has been swelling quite a lot lately and has been a bit painful.
Thank you for this really fun and unique idea <3 I'm so sorry to hear about your scolio but I hope the treatment plan wouldn't be too harsh or sudden for you.
I hope this will lighten up your mood.
Enjoy! Mwa mwa :*

"I just don't think you get it!" you whined at Mizu before taking a bite out of your food.
It was just a regular day for Mizu, working on her term-end project. Just as she was about to head out for lunch, you had called her. Despite not being able to understand your ramblings through the phone, your exasperated tone was enough to unnerve her.
Now she was here, eating her sandwich while you ranted to her about your recent doctor's trip.
And you were right, she doesn't get it. Mizu was the type of person to never complain about any bodily pains and just takes it in like a champ. But for you, she was willing to try to understand.
She stared at you as she munched on her food before setting it down on the plate. "Calm down. Just try to explain it better," she sighed out, rolling her eyes at you.
You took a deep breath, groaning into your hands before looking up at her with a slight glare. Another deep breath escaped your lips as your eyes softened and traveled to the pieces of vegetables that had fallen from your food. "I got an x-ray done the other day and just went in for a physical examination today. The doctor told me I have scoliosis and I...I don't know what to do."
"I mean I know I complain about my back hurting all the time but now it feels...different," you ranted, putting your own sandwich down and sighing. "It feels so overwhelming to know that what I considered normal was something far worse after all."
Mizu listened to your words intently as she munched on her sandwich. She had always noticed how curved your back was and was always there to help whenever you complained about your back pain but never really felt the necessity to point it out. The news of your diagnosis didn't really surprise her and she honestly thought the curve of your back was something that added quirkiness to you, but she understood why and how overwhelmed you were.
A moment of silence overtook the two of you for a moment as both of you took a bite out of your food before she looked up. "And did they mention anything about treatment?" she asked, raising an eyebrow at you.
You opened your mouth before closing it again, letting out another groan. The treatment plan was what made this whole situation worse for you. "Surgery," you said simply, looking down at your food. She tilted her head a bit, eyebrow raised higher, looking at you directly with wide eyes. "Excuse me?" she asked, voice holding a bit of disbelief.
"Back braces might not work for me anymore since I'm a grown adult so surgery is my next option," you replied, looking away. The idea of getting such an invasive procedure done made your throat tighten up at the thought. "I'm honestly really really fucking scared..."
Her eyes looked away as well, unsure of how to comfort you but she really wanted to. She knew how bad, how scared, how heavy you were feeling at the moment but her own inability to properly express the words she wanted to say was preventing her from comforting you.
Instead, she reached up to your head before patting it, corners of her lips curving up slightly in attempt to give you a comforting smile. You raised an eyebrow at her action, finding it adorable at the same time new. "It really is scary, huh? But...you can do it. I'm sure of that," she said in a softer tone as compared to her usual. "I can go with you if you want," she offered as she continued patting your head, her other hand gently pushing your sandwich closer to you.
Your hands took your sandwich, a small smile slowly crept up to your face while you took a bite out of it. "I-I'll tell you if I need help," you said as you chuckled slightly. "Just feels bad knowing there's something wrong with my body."
"Nothing's wrong with your body,." Her hand slowly traced your face before letting go to take a bite out of her sandwich. "Diagnosed or not, you're still the same. You will always be the same to me," she chuckled.
She took a napkin and leaned forward, wiping the sauce off of the corners of your lips.
"Same face." wipe
"Same personality." wipe
"And same corny, whiny attitude," she joked, earning a small "hey!" from you. You pouted at her playfully, holding back the smile that was once again creeping up to your face.
Mizu let out a huff of amusement and joy at the sight of your held-back smile, somehow feeling relieved that she was able to comfort you even just a bit. "But most of all, you'll still have the same wonderful soul," she said in a softer tone.
You finally allowed yourself to smile and take the last bite out of your food. "Even if they put a metal rod in my back?" you joked. She laughed before patting your head again. "Even with a metal rod in your back," she replied reassuringly.
A soft laugh escaped your lips as you fixed your hair again once Mizu stopped patting you. "Didn't really expect you to get to sweet and sappy...but I'm thankful to have you with me." You gently grasped her hand, looking at it fondly before meeting her gaze.
The feeling of joy and relief in knowing someone will be there for you overtook your body, making you stand up and go over to her side to hug her., "Thank you, Mizu. For comforting me and being here for me."
Her body stiffened up at the sudden hug before slowly warming up to it. A small smile tugged on her lips as nodded, acknowledging what you had just said. "Don't thank me and don't worry too much. You're okay...you're fine."

Braced by Alyson Gerber, 2017
Tumblr media
As an Amazon Affiliate, I earn commission on qualifying purchases from my affiliate links.
Genre: Young Adult Novel
Treatment Type & Stage: Bracing, Beginning and Middle
Mood: Difficulty coping with treatment
Braced is a modern take on living with scoliosis, specifically in regards to treatment with a brace. I previously reviewed Deenie here and advised that some parts of the book were dated, but that is not so with Braced as it was first published in 2017. It covers the same concerns about puberty and romance, although not at the same level that Deenie addresses it. This may still need parental guidance, but it is tamer.
In Braced, Rachel Brooks is about to start middle school and is working hard to become a forward on the soccer team. Right after she achieves her goal, though, everything becomes uncertain as she now has to wear a back brace for 23 hours a day. This messes with her soccer performance as well as her image. She faces social isolation and bullying, and even her relationships with her friends become strained.
I will be honest that I cried a lot while reading this book, although it is because of my own personal experience with self image and social issues like jokes and bullying. I was never braced as my S curve was already too severe for that to be effective treatment. I actually related quite a lot to the mother, Amy, who had surgery to correct her own scoliosis and is only starting to process that emotionally now that her daughter has it. The fact that this book includes both bracing and surgery is a plus in my book (pun intended).
I highly recommend this book for children (and their parents) dealing with a scoliosis diagnosis and bracing. It touches some on surgery, so that may be good even for those facing surgery as well. However, the perspective on surgery is not well-rounded and may not be reassuring to one's anxiety, so there may be better books for those facing surgery. Even for those who do not have scoliosis, it is a relatable book about starting middle school and trying to fit in and maybe begin dating.

"Vent art dump" Tw: Eye strain, heavy themes of child loss & death, Surgery, body scars, slight body horror, non explicit nudity, mental health problems. ‼️
Minors DNI, stay safe okay? <3
Don't worry everyone, I am mentally well these days! 😭
i wasn't originally planning on sharing these but I feel like someone out there could relate and maybe find comfort in what I express through my art, I'll even explain the meanings behind them for more context so i dont leave people guessing.
Nothing here is to gain sympathy, just sharing experiences. That's what I'm after! <3
Tumblr media
Fenrir being bound by the chains and him holding around me is supposed to be a metaphor for my build up emotions and anger towards the people that have failed me, it resembles how I can't properly express my emotions without lashing out because I had no choice then to supress them. Like fenrir, they silenced my pain, they abandoned me. Many adults in my life, including my teachers and my parents that were supposed to protect me, teach me things, that I could trust! They all failed me.
Tumblr media
This is supposed to be me and my twin sister, who only lasted a few months after our birth. Ever since I was little I always expressed I felt like something was missing, that I was half of something that was supposed to be whole. It made sense to my parents on what I meant back then and it does to me too now.
It left me feeling so empty all these years. Even if I never got to know her, I still miss her. We were both aware of each others existence at some point! After all we were identical twins. The reason her face is melted and attached to mine is because we could have been so similar in appearance, but no one knows that for certain with how things turned out. I'm more at peace with her passing these days, since I had my whole childhood to process it. But keeping her memory alive is something i wont let go off.
Tumblr media
The moment I entered this world, everyone was certain that Hel was going to take me into her sweet embrace because of the way I looked compared to my sister, I was the smallest and thinnest. It was like my fate had already been decided, but I proved them wrong by fighting on. Before I knew what fighting even was. While luck was on my side back then I ended up being frail, always so sick and truly I never grew out of it. Not only did life's circumstances almost take me, but my health complications were there to add more into the stress. Despite all these issues, I kept going!
All the way back in 2017 when I first learnt I had scoliosis, which is a condition where your spine curves sideways, that affects many things in your body! I was terrified for my life. I've always avoided those "dangers" like breaking an arm because I knew I probably couldn't handle it and I knew already back then if the treatments I got wasn't working, it was going to get life threatening. Which it did, I was doomed for surgery no matter the efforts.
While you can't die from surgery these days, with my weak condition and this HUGE surgery I had a feeling I wasn't going to make it. But I did and i have gone through this twice now! The scar on my back will remain forever, but it's not there to remind me how horrible life is and how scared I was, instead rather how strong I've been through it all!

the info on chiropractors always made me wonder. i was taken weekly as a kid and it felt real good to have my back cracked and be put on that wavy table. i also have mild scolosis, sideways kind (it makes one leg longer than the other) and the chiropractor diagnosed that. i have bad chronic back pain and limited mobility as an adult after not going for several years so were the treatments helping or did it make it worse? as in was it like seeing a massage therapist regularly or did it fuck up my back permanently? hard to know, no doctor has done anything for my scoliosis and i constantly crave having my back cracked.

Best Scoliosis Treatment Hospitals In India
Tumblr media
Scoliosis is a spine-related curvature that occurs during the growth of spurt and just before puberty. Scoliosis can take a bad curve due to cerebral palsy
, and muscular dystrophy, the reasons for which are unknown. Most of the cases are mild, with a few known symptoms. The complications become prominent as the children grow. Sometimes there is a requirement for surgery, at other times the brace works like a miracle for the cause.
The treatment of Scoliosis
is not easy as it is related to the spine which is the most critical bone sequence of the body. The condition of a Scoliosis prone patient ranges from good to fair. It depends upon how early the problem has been diagnosed and treated safely.
Scoliosis can develop into four states or kinds that depend upon an age group and progresses through all, almost the same:
Congenital Scoliosis
Neuromuscular Scoliosis
Adolescence Idiopathic Scoliosis
Adult Denovo Scoliosis
Scoliosis Surgery
The anterior approach allows an additional segment motion which shares the load of the main affected segments of the spine The recovery time is less than 4 weeks
The surgery should stop the spine curve
Scoliosis can affect the Heart and Lungs. Damage occurs when the spine curvature is 70 degrees. A curve of 100 degrees can cause severe damage to the position of the Heart and Lungs.
Surgery can prevent other future trauma of spine pains and arthritis.
Scoliosis Care Management -Post Surgery
The patients can walk after 2 or 3 days after surgery and if they are okay then the patient is discharged after 6 -7 days
The more immobile the spine is kept, the better the spine will fuse after surgery
Bending and lifting are also discouraged
The patient needs to be monitored continuously for 2-3 years with X-rays
Once the bone is fused, it becomes normal
The patients are asked for activity after a thoracic fusion, between the upper and the lower thoracic and lumbar spine.
Female patients can deliver babies after the scoliosis fusion.
Various types of Scoliosis Surgeries are available in India, which is as on the age and the actual medical condition, the spine of the patient
Anterior -Posterior approach
Frontal Approach
Thoracoscopic Surgery
Thoracic Plasty
Osteotomies
Flatback Surgery
Kyphosis Surgery
Partial or Complete Vertebra Remove
Vertebral Column Resection
Indian doctors are well known for their extraordinary achievements in the field of Scoliosis surgeries in the world.
Scoliosis can be treated in a non-surgical method which depends on the curve and progression of the condition. It includes a proper fitness routine, brace, and a few sittings with your doctor to analyze the curvature.
Symptoms of Scoliosis Treatment depend upon the age and the medical condition of the patient. The most common ones are:
Uneven shoulders and blades
Uneven Hips
S or C-shaped spine posture
Unequal distance between arms and the body sphere
Ribs that stick out in one area need treatment
Uneven waist fold since birth but discovered now

Physical Therapy Clinic in New York City
What is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a hereditary disorder that affects the connective tissue in the skin, joints, and blood vessels. It is caused by a faulty gene that leads to a defect in collagen, proteins that add strength and flexibility to the connective tissue in your body.
The disorder can be passed from one parent to a child in either a dominant or recessive genetic inheritance pattern. Both types of the syndrome are caused by a defect in the collagen gene.
Most people with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome have very flexible and stretchy skin that can bruise easily. Some types of conditions cause abnormal scarring, as well.
Many types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome can cause easy bleeding or rupture (perforation) of a blood vessel or organ, such as the heart or large intestines. These complications can be fatal if not treated immediately.
Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
This type of Ehlers-Danlos causes a weakening of the wall of your heart's largest artery (aorta) and other large blood vessels throughout your body. It can also weaken your uterus or large intestines, so you may develop easy bruising, internal bleeding, a hole in the wall of your intestine (intestinal perforation), and stroke.
These vascular EDS symptoms can be more severe in children than adults. They can also develop kyphosis or scoliosis (abnormal curvature of the spine) and low bone mass.
Some forms of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome affect the clear covering of your eyes or cornea. They can lead to tearing or rupture of the cornea (bluish tint in the white part of your eyes) and retinal detachment. These eye problems can cause nearsightedness, blindness, and a bluish tint in your eyes.
Other types of Ehlers-Danlos can affect the muscles, bones, and fluid in your body. They can make it difficult to breathe and may lead to a blockage in the airway or lungs, such as a pneumothorax.
In most cases, these conditions are not serious and can be managed with medication or physical therapy. A healthcare team that understands each person's symptoms is key to managing Ehlers-Danlos.
A medical doctor, physical therapist, and dietitian are the primary providers for people with Ehlers-Danlos. These specialists can help you understand your condition and guide you through treatment and management strategies.
The best way to avoid a complication is to follow your doctor's recommendations for medication, monitoring, and physical activity. It's also important to discuss any underlying medical problems that may have an impact on your Ehlers-Danlos condition.
Pregnancy and Birth
Women with Ehlers-Danlos and a related hereditary syndrome called hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) should talk to their doctors about managing pregnancy. This includes discussing the risks to a woman and her unborn child and understanding the options for family planning.
During pregnancy, a woman who has Ehlers-Danlos and HSD should be monitored closely for complications. During delivery, the baby can become distressed and have trouble breathing.
Most children with Ehlers-Danlos have an inherited tendency to sprain or dislocate their joints. In rare cases, this can lead to broken bones or a spinal cord injury. Fortunately, these injuries are very rare in children with Ehlers-Danlos.
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome cause is a genetic defect in the body's connective tissue. These connective tissues provide support and structure to your body's organs, bones, blood vessels, and skin. These tissues are made of collagen, a protein that is essential for healthy joints and cartilage.
People with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome have abnormal collagen. This can weaken the connections in the body's tissues, which makes them unable to keep their shape and flexibility.
It also can make them more prone to injury and other problems, like joint pain, premature aging due to sun exposure, and slow-healing cuts, bruises, or wounds. This can lead to a lot of frustration for people with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and their families.
There are 13 types of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, each characterized by its own set of symptoms. Doctors classify them based on their most notable features and the parts of the body where symptoms appear.
Type I – Hypermobile (hEDS)
The most common form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is hEDS, which causes overly flexible joints and soft, velvety skin. It is caused by a gene mutation that changes the way collagen is made in your body.
Your doctor will examine your joints and skin to determine if you have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. If you do have this condition, your doctor may refer you to a genetic specialist.

To Know More @ https://www.globalinsightservices.com/reports/scoliosis-braces-market
The scoliosis braces market is anticipated to expand from $2.3 billion in 2023 to $4.5 billion by 2033, reflecting a CAGR of 6.8%.
Market Outlook
The Scoliosis Braces Market is witnessing steady growth, driven by the rising prevalence of scoliosis among adolescents and increased awareness about early diagnosis and intervention. The braces serve as a non-invasive treatment option, helping patients avoid surgical procedures while promoting spinal health.
One of the key factors fueling market expansion is the growing number of scoliosis cases globally. According to health organizations, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common type of scoliosis, affecting 2-3% of the population aged 10 to 18 years. Early-stage diagnosis, combined with the availability of advanced bracing solutions, is significantly improving treatment outcomes.
Technological advancements are reshaping the scoliosis braces landscape. Innovations such as 3D scanning, computer-aided design (CAD), and lightweight materials are enabling the development of custom-fit, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing braces. Dynamic bracing systems, which allow greater mobility while maintaining corrective pressure, are gaining traction among patients seeking enhanced functionality.

However, efforts to improve brace designs, coupled with insurance coverage for pediatric orthotic treatments, are addressing these issues and driving adoption rates.
The pediatric segment remains the largest consumer base, as scoliosis is most commonly diagnosed during growth spurts in childhood and adolescence. However, the adult scoliosis segment is also growing, driven by the aging population and increased awareness of the condition among older individuals.

Common Spine Conditions Treated by Dr. Tushar Pisal
Dr. Pisal has extensive experience treating a wide variety of spinal conditions. Some of the most common spine issues he treats include:
1. Chronic Back Pain
Back pain is one of the most common complaints among adults, and it can stem from numerous underlying conditions, including muscle strains, herniated discs, or spinal arthritis. Chronic back pain can interfere with daily activities and significantly reduce your quality of life. As a leading spine surgeon in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Dr. Pisal employs a combination of diagnostic imaging, non-invasive treatments, and surgical procedures to help you find relief.
2. Herniated Discs
A herniated disc occurs when the soft, gel-like center of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the tougher exterior, potentially causing nerve compression and pain. Dr. Pisal’s expertise includes treating this condition through conservative methods such as physical therapy or advanced surgical techniques, including minimally invasive spine surgery.
3. Scoliosis and Spinal Deformities
Scoliosis, a condition where the spine curves abnormally, is often diagnosed in childhood or adolescence. In adults, degenerative scoliosis or spinal deformities can occur due to age-related changes. As a spine specialist, Dr. Pisal provides comprehensive care to manage scoliosis, ranging from non-surgical treatments to advanced corrective spinal surgery.
4. Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis refers to the narrowing of the spaces in the spine, which can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, leading to pain, numbness, and muscle weakness. Treatment options for spinal stenosis may involve physical therapy, medications, or surgery, depending on the severity of the condition. Dr. Pisal works with patients to identify the most effective treatment strategy.
5. Spinal Fractures and Trauma
Accidents or injuries can cause fractures in the spine, leading to immediate pain, instability, and in some cases, neurological damage. Whether caused by a fall, car accident, or sports injury, Dr. Pisal is skilled in treating spinal fractures through both conservative methods and surgical interventions like spinal fusion or fixation.
6. Degenerative Disc Disease
As we age, the discs in our spine naturally begin to lose water content, making them less flexible and more prone to wear and tear. This condition, known as degenerative disc disease, can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Dr. Pisal offers treatment options to manage symptoms and help patients maintain a healthy spine through non-surgical means or surgical procedures if necessary.
Advanced Spine Treatment Options

1. Non-Surgical Treatments
Not all spinal conditions require surgery. Dr. Pisal initially focuses on conservative treatments, which may include:
Physical Therapy: Targeted exercises to strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and reduce pain.
Medications: Pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and muscle relaxants to manage symptoms.
Epidural Steroid Injections: For patients with severe pain, these injections can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
Lifestyle Modifications: Recommendations on posture correction, weight management, and ergonomic adjustments.
2. Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
For patients who do not respond to non-surgical treatments, Dr. Pisal is highly skilled in performing minimally invasive spine surgery. This approach involves smaller incisions, reduced muscle dissection, and quicker recovery times. Techniques such as endoscopic spine surgery, laser spine surgery, and robotic-assisted spine surgery are available to treat various conditions with greater precision and less recovery time.
3. Spinal Fusion Surgery
In cases of degenerative disc disease, spinal fractures, or severe scoliosis, spinal fusion surgery may be required. Dr. Pisal uses advanced spinal fusion techniques to stabilize the spine, promote healing, and restore function.
4. Disc Replacement Surgery
For patients suffering from chronic disc-related pain, disc replacement surgery may be an option. This involves replacing the damaged disc with an artificial one, which allows for more natural movement of the spine compared to spinal fusion.

Deenie by Judy Blume, 1973
Tumblr media
Genre: Young Adult Novel
Treatment Type & Stage: Bracing, Beginning
Mood: Resistant to Treatment
Deenie touches on a number of struggles as a brand-new teenager (13 years old) going through puberty, with the primary issue being the discovery of scoliosis and how that affects Deenie's appearance and ability to be a model. Due to the book being written in the '70s, some aspects of scoliosis treatment are out of date, but it is still a relatable coming-of-age story that includes the not uncommon experience of teenage girls dealing with a scoliosis diagnosis and the required treatment. It is important to note that Judy Blume notoriously loves to talk about the taboo, and there are plenty of sexual references in this book to merit a parental guidance warning.
As I was never braced in my scoliosis journey, I cannot make a comparison to my own experience here. However, Braced by Alyson Gerber was published in 2017. It should have a more updated take on treatment by brace. I will review that one next. I will say that I did relate emotionally to the experiences of Deenie in this book. When I had high school senior pictures (post-operation), I grew more and more frustrated by being adjusted to fix my uneven shoulders and my posture in general. I also related to Deenie's sister Helen who was always pushed to be the smart kid with straight A's whose grades slip just a little bit (B's instead of A's), and it becomes a big ordeal.
Overall, I think this is a wonderful book that still has merit as a book suggestion even if it's a bit dated. For someone struggling with the emotional effects of a scoliosis diagnosis and a change in self-image, this is a relatable read. Even beyond scoliosis, it is relatable for any teenager just beginning their journey into puberty. If you would like your own copy of this book, you can find it on Amazon in various formats here: https://amzn.to/47JZy0h (commission link).
