THE LADY OF SHALOTT
‘The Lady of Shalott’ is a lyrical ballad by the English poet Alfred Tennyson. The poem is loosely based on the Arthurian legend of Elaine of Astolat, as recounted in a 13th-century Italian novellina titled La Damigella di Scalot, or Donna di Scalotta.
According to Tennyson’s version of the legend, the Lady of Shalott was forbidden to look directly at reality or the outside world; instead she was doomed to view the world through a mirror, and weave what she saw into tapestry. Her despair was heightened when she saw loving couples entwined in the far distance and she spent her days and nights aching for a return to normal. One day the Lady’s mirror revealed Sir Lancelot passing by on his horse. When she impetuously took three paces across the room and looked at him, the mirror cracked and she realised that the curse had befallen her. The lady escaped by boat during an autumn storm, inscribing ‘The Lady of Shalott’ on the prow. As she sailed towards Camelot and certain death, she sang a lament. Her frozen body was found shortly afterwards by the knights and ladies of Camelot, one of whom is Lancelot, who prayed to God to have mercy on her soul. - LADY OF SHALOTT FREE EBOOK

"The Lady of Shalott" is a lyrical ballad by the 19th-century English poet Alfred Tennyson and one of his best-known works. Inspired by the 13th-century Italian short prose text Donna di Scalotta, the poem tells the tragic story of Elaine of Astolat, a young noblewoman stranded in a tower up the river from Camelot. Tennyson wrote two versions of the poem, one published in 1833, of 20 stanzas, the other in 1842, of 19 stanzas, and returned to the story in "Lancelot and Elaine". The vivid medieval romanticism and enigmatic symbolism of "The Lady of Shalott" inspired many painters, especially the Pre-Raphaelites and their followers, as well as other authors and artists.

She sees sir Lancelot riding past and stops weaving to look at him out the window. The mirror cracks and she leaves her tower and gets into a boat, she writes her name onto the boat and floats down the river to Camelot. The king marries her and they eventually have a child and Rumpelstiltskin appears, she pleads him to not take her child and he tells her she has three days to guess his name. On the third day one of her servants says her herd a little man singing his name. when the queen tells him he gets so angry he rips himself in half.

Her parents purge the entire kingdom of this item but the prophecy is still fulfilled however instead of dying she falls into a deep sleep. A king finds her and thinks she is dead he then ‘gathers the first fruits of love’ (not okay!) and she gives birth to twins in her sleep, they try to suckle on her finger and the splinter comes loose. The king goes back to find her awake, he tells her everything that happened and they somehow end up bonding (smh), he promises to take her back to his kingdom. His wife is suspicious and finds out what happens, then she pretends to be the king in a letter and sends for the twins. she then gives the babies to the cook and orders him to kill and serve them at dinner. Instead the cook hides the babies and kills two lambs and gives them to the king, the queen shouts at dinner that he is eating his two children and later invites Thalia to the castle and attempts to have her burned alive, the king then orders the queen and everyone who betrayed him to be burned instead, the cook is heavily rewarded and then proceeds to marry Thalia.

She escapes with the flames contained in a skull and when she arrived home the flames engulfed her stepfamily, she buries it and then runs away living with an old woman in the countryside, she repays the old woman by weaving cloth to sell at the market. instead the old woman shows he cloth to the palace to show the tsarevich, who then marries vasilisa as the weaving was so beautiful. Her, the old lady and her father then live happily in the palace.

He kicks her out saying that she doesn't love him at all. she finds some reeds and weaves them into a cape to hide her fine clothing. She then goes to get a job at a mansion washing pots. A ball is held and she pretends not to go, she removes her cape and goes o the ball where she dances all night with the masters son, he gives her a ring and they part ways. The son then becomes lovesick and doesn't seem to be getting better, the cook tells cap o’ rushes what happens and she pretends not to know, she begs the cook to let her make his soup and slips the ring into it. the son asks the cook who made it and she admits it being cap o’ rushes, she is brought to his room and she reveals herself. They get married and she invites her family. She asks the cook to not salt any of the meat, and the father starts crying in the middle of the meal, saying that he was wrong to send his daughter away, she tells him that she is his daughter and they all are reunited.
