15 June
We heard this morning that a large adult male Lion was at the waterhole at Savuti drinking and got there in time to see it before it wandered off. It put on good spectacle with lots of roaring and facing the tourists gawking at him.
We headed north up to Ihaha campsite, still within Chobe NP. It was sandy again but not as bumpy as the day before. Stopped to buy some locally made woven baskets and a carved wooden giraffe. On the way into our campsite Max spotted a Leopard, our third for the trip.
Our fridge is on its last legs as the second battery hasn’t really being working since we picked up the car in Windhoek. Jarod did a bit of DIY mechanics but the battery connection is faulty. Lucky we only have 1 more night in the car.
It’s not the only issue we’ve had and overcome. The latch on the door covering the fridge had worn through and kept opening up whilst driving and the fridge would slide out. Another DIY fix and we have managed. A chain broke on the fold down kids bed and Jarod fixed it. This afternoon Finlay discovered that a 5 Litre bottle of water leaked out and soaked into clothes in the storage area in the back of the car, mostly Finlay’s were affected, have dried them out around the fire, using the ladder as a makeshift clothes airer.
We had a good drive around the park and there is abundant wildlife along Chobe River. Namibia is just across the other side and our campsite overlooks the river.
Once back from our drive it wasn’t long before we saw a huge herd of water buffalo crossing the river so we jumped in the car to have a look and continued driving further along to towards Kasane.
Jarod drove too close to a buffalo and it started to charge at us 🙄.
We returned and the camp manager came along and alerted us to a pack of Cheetahs that were hanging out near where the Buffalo crossed. Max amazingly spotted them in the shade of a tree, a pack of 6, our first Cheetahs in the wild.
A beautiful sunset tonight with Elephants along the Chobe River.
We were told lions and a leopard have been hanging around the campsites so we keep our usual lookout.

Yet, it is the country’s renowned game reserves that truly steal the spotlight, captivating the imagination of adventurers, wildlife enthusiasts, and nature lovers from across the globe. In this article, we embark on a journey to uncover the hidden treasures of Botswana Game Reserve game reserves, where nature’s raw beauty and untamed inhabitants create an unforgettable experience.
The Allure of Botswana Game Reserves
Botswana’s commitment to sustainable ecotourism has transformed its game reserves into havens of conservation and enchantment. The country’s dedication to preserving its natural heritage while offering immersive and responsible tourism experiences is evident in the way its game reserves are managed. With a low-impact, high-reward approach, these reserves allow visitors to witness the circle of life in its purest form while contributing to the preservation of fragile ecosystems.
Chobe National Park: A Haven for Elephants
One of the crown jewels of Botswana’s game reserves is Chobe National Park, renowned for having one of the largest concentrations of elephants on the African continent. The park’s lush floodplains and savannas are a paradise for these majestic creatures, offering visitors an unparalleled opportunity to witness their remarkable behavior up close. From thrilling elephant herds crossing the Chobe River to the magnificent sight of a setting sun painting the landscape in hues of gold, Chobe promises an unforgettable safari experience.
Moremi Game Reserve: Where the Delta and Wildlife Converge
Nestled within the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve presents a unique combination of diverse ecosystems, ranging from serene waterways to open grasslands. This dynamic habitat supports an astonishing variety of wildlife, including the Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. A mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) ride through the winding water channels reveals a whole new perspective on game viewing, allowing you to glide through the delta’s intricate web of life.
Savuti Marsh: Predator Paradise
For those seeking the thrill of predator sightings, the Savuti Marsh in the heart of the Chobe National Park is a must-visit destination. This area is known for its intense predator-prey interactions, where lions, hyenas, and cheetahs showcase their hunting prowess. The marsh’s transformation from a lush paradise to a barren landscape during the dry season creates a dramatic backdrop for these encounters, offering a front-row seat to the struggles and triumphs of African wildlife.
Central Kalahari Game Reserve: Embracing the Desert’s Secrets
Venturing into the heart of the Kalahari Desert, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is a starkly beautiful expanse that shatters the notion of desolation. During the rainy season, the reserve’s grasslands burst into life, attracting an array of wildlife, including the unique desert-adapted species. Witnessing the desert’s subtle yet breathtaking transformations, and encountering creatures such as meerkats and brown hyenas, offers a profound appreciation for life’s resilience in the harshest of environments.
