Battle Royale
The time is soon upon us ladies and gents. Former Minister Gline Clarke has vacated his St. George North constituency seat and it is there for the taking. There will be a by-election and since this was announced it has been pandemonium! I will admit I forgot how entertaining elections can be. From the constant digs and cheap shots being taken by opposing party members, to the speakers who in many cases say embarrassing things and have to make retractions and apologies later. This by-election has been a riot so far and I am not disappointed one bit! When Toni Moore was chosen as the BLP representative to vie for the St. George North seat it caused an uproar. A large part of the issue with her selection was because she was the General Secretary of the Barbados Workers Union and also a Barbados senator. Clearly, we can see how a conflict of interest exists in this situation and the opposition did not hesitate to loudly voice their disgust. Now let me say this, I love Auntie Mia and after our last Prime Minister she is a breath of fresh air because our last leader didn’t have much to say. Really imagine if he was our leader during this Pandemic. Anyways, I digress. Our Prime Minister has been boisterous and bombastic in her endorsement of Toni Moore and took to the stage last month to shell all of the naysayers from the opposition by asking a series of questions beginning with “You mean to tell me…” I love it!! Auntie Mia is a bully pun de mic! Sometimes politics reminds me of WWE wrestling from back in the day when it was WWF and much better than it is now.  One wrestler would come out and talk in the middle of the ring about another wrestler and get the crowd hype. In most cases the other wrestler would come out and respond, hyping up the crowd even more and it would culminate in a big match. Barbadian politics ain’t much different. It would be remiss of me to not bring this up. Do you remember what DLP Minister Dennis Lowe said on a political stage leading up to the 2018 wash off? Let me remind those of you who forgot. Mr. Lowe pretty much called all the male members of the BLP eunuchs or men who were castrated because their party leader was a woman. Next, he addressed our now Prime Minister as a material you can make furniture and craft from. Cause I am not saying it on this blog. It is one of the few times in life I was truly speechless. Dennis had reached a new Lowe. Now when you say ‘A’ you got to say ‘B’. Well, in this case when you say ‘B’ you got to say ‘D’. Toni Moore is the candidate for the BLP, and West Indies cricketer Floyd Reifer is the candidate for the DLP. I could not ask for a better match up. Floyd Reifer is a resident of St. George and a man who seems to be well adored and respected by the residents of that parish. He clearly is no politician and may not wield the sword of articulation with the same ferocity as more seasoned speakers, but he has nothing to lose either.
Floyd Reifer is being presented as a man who cares about his community and its people and would like the chance to represent them with some political power to his name. He is not trying to be something he is not and I think that is a plus. Some voters need to see some level of humanness to a candidate and best believe he will have tremendous support from St. George.  Now detractors from either side are expected. Trade Unionist and Opposition Senator Caswell Franklyn has been one of Toni Moore’s biggest detractors calling her essentially a traitor. It only makes sense The BLP would have their own weapons to deploy towards Mr. Reifer knowing he is not versed in the art of war that is politics. Former Parliamentarian Delisle Bradshaw has made the most controversial remark so far throughout this lead up to the November 11th showdown. In an attempt to disparage or pretty much humiliate Reifer, Bradshaw said “any idiot can play cricket” inferring that Reifer was out of his depth and should stay where he belongs to put it nicely. Within two days or less Reifer had a response in the form of a video that went viral asking Bradshaw if he understands how insulting and disrespectful his comments were to ALL of our cricket legends INCLUDING our only living national hero. BRILLIANT!!! If this was chess, it would be checkmate. Bradshaw was forced to give a half-assed attempt at an apology and tried to clarify what he meant at the time. Too late Delisle, your daughter, Minister of Education, Santia Bradshaw had to be shame. All I can say is that November 11th will be very interesting and remember, all the seats are up for grabs in a by-election. I can’t promise all the BLP seats will be safe this time around. I also can’t assure anyone that Toni Moore will beat Floyd Reifer, but I have my popcorn and my large drink and I am enjoying the show!

Prime Minister Mia Mottley will undergo a medical procedure this weekend. In her absence, Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw will act as Prime Minister. Mottley made the announcement in a national address from Ilaro Court on Thursday when she also said the number of COVID-19 cases on island had risen to 24, leading to an activation of stage 3 of the national response plan.
I have told you always from the time I was sworn in that I would be upfront with you the people of this country. I have a medical procedure that the doctors have advised that I should do this weekend; I am going to take the opportunity to do it,” she said.
“While I am doing that procedure, the Honourable Santia Bradshaw will act as Prime Minister.”
The COVID-19 team will also remain in place, Mottley said. Attorney General Dale Marshall will handle the legal aspects, Minister of Health Jeffrey Bostic will continue to chair the Emergency Operations Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senator Jerome Walcott, will “continue to marshal” the regional and international relations, particularly the supply and logistics chain.
“I know I will be well,” Mottley said with a smile, “but I know that some of you may want to be concerned; please don’t be. All will be well, but what I will not brook is not telling you the truth and not having persons spread rumours about it across the country.I will see you next week, thank you,” she said in conclusion after thanking several people for their work during the COVID-19 threat which the island is facing.

Displaced workers take up training Most of the workers from the soon-to-be disbanded National Beautification Programme have signed onto Government’s retraining initiative which could facilitate their transfer to other work areas after March 31. The workers, who took part in the efforts to clean up the island following the ashfall from the La Soufriere volcano in St. Vincent and the Grenadines two years ago and who later took part in the beautification programme which will end next month have taken the opportunity to sharpen their skill set. Leader of Government Business in the House of Assembly, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Works, Santia Bradshaw, revealed this in Parliament as the House approved a $23 million supplemental for her ministry to undertake a number of ventures. Regarding the workers, Bradshaw said, “We decided when the programme came to an end that we wanted to retrain the workers by enrolling them in the Skills Training programme to enhance and improve their skill set. Initially, about 75 per cent of the workers had signed the forms for this purpose, and more recently another five per cent have come on board. We have already started classes in tree trimming, electrical installation, skid steer (Bobcat) driving and gabion building.” She added, “Contract letters have already gone out, and we are ensuring that their NIS payments are up to date and are hoping that there is no backlog where that is concerned. We have also engaged the services of a communications company to help the workers in the transitioning process and some private sector companies have already agreed to work with the former workers once they complete their training.” The ministry is also embarking on a programme to pave tenantry roads. Bradshaw said, “We have allocated $3 million to this programme, which will cover the purchase of equipment to pave roads that are about 100 metres in length. We will ensure that any drainage issues are addressed and we will source some of the equipment locally and elsewhere. We plan to start with 60 roads before the end of the current financial year on March 31.” https://www.instagram.com/p/Corsf_-gg8z5NjhDu1RNPXHCmLQo1FesdSwhjs0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

History Created With 2018 Barbados Scholarships And Exhibitions

History Created With 2018 Barbados Scholarships And Exhibitions
This year will be recorded as an historic one for the award of Barbados Scholarships and Exhibitions.
Not only was it the first time that The St. Michael School joined the prestigious ranks of other institutions by securing a Barbados scholar in the person of Nathan Lovell, but according to Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Santia Bradshaw, there was a 40.6 per cent increase in the number of students being awarded Exhibitions, compared to last year.
The tally for the 2018 Barbados Scholarships and Exhibitions was 55 – 23 Scholarships (19 females and four males) and 32 Exhibitions (24 females and eight males), presenting Government with the unique challenge of securing funding for the large group of students. The 23 scholarship winners all received Grade Ones in the Caribbean Examinations Council’s CAPE exams in eight units of their programme.
“When the Chief Education Officer said that the Barbados Government has to figure out how we are going to pay for you all, she was not joking. But it does please us and I think you would know that our mantra has been one where we focus very heavily on education and we believe in investing in our people and you are our greatest resource. And the only thing I would ask that all of you do for the investment that is being made in you is that you give back to your country. Wherever you may go, find a way to come back to Barbados and use the knowledge that you have to give back to this country,” Ms. Bradshaw told the eager awardees, their parents and relatives, who gathered in the auditorium of the Erdiston Teachers’ Training College, Pine Hill, St. Michael, yesterday for the announcement.
Harrison College was awarded 12 scholarships; Queen’s College, 10; and The St. Michael School, one.  The breakdown, in respect to exhibitions, is as follows: Harrison College – 10; Queen’s College – 17; Barbados Community College – three; and The St. Michael School received its first two exhibitions. Last year, only 19 exhibitions were awarded.
The Education Minister disclosed that 40 of the 55 awards (scholarships and exhibitions) were in the areas of Science and Technology; 13 were in any subject combination; and one was in Theatre Arts. She congratulated the students for their hard work and acknowledged the teachers, who worked diligently with them from the nursery to secondary school levels, for their dedication.

“I also want to publicly thank all of the teachers from the various institutions who have worked with these students. A lot of our teachers are working in very difficult circumstances, but certainly working hard to deliver the results that we have highlighted today,” Ms. Bradshaw stated.
She continued: “I want to assure you that the Barbados Government remains committed to ensuring appropriate education and training for our children to live happy and fulfilling lives so that our young people will be world-class citizens grounded in Barbadian values, using their skills to show the world what Barbados has to offer, building the Barbados brand, supporting themselves and being of benefit to our country.”
The Minister also acknowledged the support of parents in getting the winners to where they are today.
“As I look around the room, I’m indeed heartened to see the adults – the parents and guardians – who have accompanied these awardees. I know you have supported them throughout their school life and certainly by the rush to get here this evening, you have continued to support them. But truthfully, the journey now begins because this is another chapter in their lives which might not be the hand-holding that they are accustomed to, but you still have the responsibility to be there every step of the way with them…you, too, must be congratulated.
“To the students present here today… It is you who will have the opportunity to write the future chapters on the pages of history of this island. I ask you to be proud of your success and to be proud as we are of your success. Congratulations yet again,” she said.
Also present at the event was Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Dr. Romel Springer; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Janet Phillips; Deputy Permanent Secretary, Princess Lovell-Chandler; Chief Education Officer, Karen Best; and Deputy Chief Education Officers, Joy Adamson and Dr. Roderick Rudder.
