Part 1: Late 90s-2005 (ish) “Oldschool”

Oldschool sweet is the first truly recognizable form of sweet Lolita

Though during the Oldschool era the substyles had far more crossover and less individual traits I think there’s just enough that you still label coords from the time. When most people think of Oldschool they think of a solid color main piece with lace topped otks and a rectangle headdress… but Oldschool is so much more than that.

Oldschool in general was simpler, though some brands like Metamorphose Temps De Fille , Emily Temple Cute, and baby the stars shine bright were already making prints

Printed fabrics of fruits or florals were very common, but you did see a good amount of screen printed and appliquéd pieces coming out at the time too. Some very common sweet motifs in the oldschool era were:

•fruit

•alice in wonderland

•bunnies / rabbits

•bears

•alphabet / letter prints

•music notes

•hearts

The closer to the end of the identifiable oldschool era the more prints became popular! Though through most of the 2000’s prints would remain more minimal with the focus being on more structural elements like lace, bows, construction, and interesting fabric choices.

Color balance wasn’t considered as highly as it is today, the overall vibe of Coords was more chaotic and experimental. A very make do attitude can be seen in many street snaps.

Patterned main pieces were another popular alternative to prints, things like gingham, stripes, tartan/plaid.

Bag choices were pretty varied, honestly in a lot of oldschool sweet coords people would use unique bags as the visual interest / focal point. You can already see that in someone of the coords above. Faux leather shaped bags like btssb’s heart bags weren’t very common yet. A few brands had put out heart bags, such as milk, but they were much simpler and often real leather in limited colors. Socks are often overlooked in oldschool. I’ve seen so many people say printed socks weren’t worn even though they absolutely were and many brands made them. Sure, lace topped otks were the trend and the most popular option but simple motif printed socks absolutely existed and were worn!

Headpieces were one of the most varied category. So many different styles and kinds were worn.

Jewelry / Accessories were one area that Oldschool definitely was simpler. However brands were absolutely making both jewelry and other accessories. Hopefully there’s more of an effort to start documenting jewelry and accessories from this time since it’s quite lacking

Makeup and hair were something that like all eras of Lolita followed the over all cultural trends of the time. More minimal make or simple 90’s - early 2000’s makeup is seen often. As for hair there’s so many different styles that really it would be impossible to list them all. In older magazines there’s often sections with hair tutorials and makeup tutorials!

Common lace styles included Torchon, Cotton, Eyelet, and Raschel. Many different trims and such were used in addition to these.

Exploring the Hustle: Lessons from Local Businesses

Technopreneurship Blogs Week 1-2 | Aug 19 - Sept 2 | 2024

Frenziz Crochets Every day, we encounter businesses in countless forms, whether it’s a quick glance at a boutique in a shopping center or an advertisement for a new restaurant on social media. Yet, we often underestimate the sheer number of businesses that exist and the challenges they’ve overcome to stand firm in today’s market. As part of our Technopreneurship course, my group mates—Annriza Lam, Cindy Clair Booc, Honey Rhose Petil—and I partakes unto interviewing companies to gain real-world overview on how it is being kept on going.

These interviews were a step into unknown territory for me. I had never faced a challenge where we had to interview strangers about their business experiences, which made the task feel a bit daunting, especially since I'm very introverted. We started by familiarizing ourselves with LimKetKai Mall, the area we chose for our interviews, and practiced different approaches to engaging potential interviewees. We reassured ourselves with the thought that at the end of the day, 'We're just a bunch of students trying our best to survive college, and they'll probably forget about us by the next day given how many people they encounter,' just to boost our confidence a bit. 😂

The next day, we took our time make and refine our questions, ensuring appropriate questions for the types of businesses we planned to engage with. We tried to keep our questions straightforward and easy respond to make our interviewees feel at ease.

ALBERTO

Our first stop was Alberto, a boutique located on the first floor of the West part of the Mall. With over thirty years in the leather goods industry, their mission is to provide customers with quality footwear that offers good value for money, enhancing their lives one pair at a time. Their offerings range from wedges and sandals to office shoes, men's footwear, and bags.

We spoke with Aljen Padoc Tagaylo, who works as a Cash Reliever at the store. She highlighted the importance of providing customers with comfortable products and accurate information. Despite the challenge of being compared to other brands, Aljen assured us that Alberto prioritizes customer comfort and product quality. She also mentioned that they often receive positive feedback from repeat customers. An advice that she gave us, as budding technopreneurs, was to focus on effective advertising and staying updated on trends that appeal to younger generations to help our future businesses grow.

ACER

Our next interview took place at the Acer Concept Store. Opened in August 2022, this store is part of Upson’s expansion strategy, which has seen Acer stores pop up in five locations since 2021. The store offers a wide range of tech products, including desktops, laptops, monitors, and gaming gear. They also provide services like game and operating system installations, catering primarily to middle-class consumers.

Chris John Cayetano, a sales technician also a wonderful individual to talk to, shared insights into the store’s operations. He highlighted the importance of hitting monthly sales targets and how bonuses and incentives play a crucial role in boosting team morale and financial stability. Providing excellent service is key to customer satisfaction, although Chris noted that sales can fluctuate depending on the season, which presents its own set of challenges. His advice was that starting a business often involves a lengthy process of recouping initial investments, emphasizing the need for patience and perseverance.

FRENZIZ CROCHET

Our third interview was with Jerly Galo Serana, who owns Frenziz Crochet, a business she named after her daughter. Specializing in handmade crochet items, Jerly’s products cater to people of all ages and preferences. What began as a hobby two years ago has grown into a business she officially launched in 2021. Since then, 

Frenziz Crochet has expanded to several malls, including LimKetKai, Ayala Malls Centrio, Robinsons Iligan, Robinsons Valencia, and SM Downtown. As of August 2024, her products were featured at the Higalaay Festival bazaar in the LimKetKai Mall Rotunda.

Jerly’s enthusiasm was evident throughout our conversation. She emphasized that hard work, dedication, and maintaining a distinct identity are crucial in setting her products apart from competitors. Starting her business with little financial investment, she focused on refining her skills, driven by a belief in showcasing her talent. Perseverance and a genuine passion for her craft are what keep her business thriving. Despite facing obstacles like exhaustion and creative blocks, Jerly’s background in HR and sales, combined with a positive mindset, has helped her overcome them. She expressed deep satisfaction in both her personal fulfillment and the financial stability her business provides.

COLOURS FOTO

Colours Foto is an authorized dealer of major camera brands like Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fujifilm. With over three decades in the industry, the store offers a wide range of photography equipment, from DSLRs to drones. The LimKetKai branch, which opened in October 2018, is one of several locations, including branches in Ayala Center Cebu, Ayala Centrio CDO, and Island City Mall Tagbilaran.

Jen Revil, who we interviewed for this store, explained that the business aims to attract more customers and maintain a fully stocked inventory. However, she mentioned that the store faces challenges due to inconsistent customer traffic and the nature of their products, which aren’t bought frequently. Despite these hurdles, maintaining a well-stocked store helps them achieve steady profits.

RTB VARIETY STORE

Our final interview of the week was with RTB Variety Store, a vendor at the Higalaay Festival bazaar in the Limketkai Mall Rotunda. In addition to this event, they have participated in other bazaars, including Eid al-Fitr and ‘Farm to Market’ events. The store showcases a variety of Philippine handicrafts, from batik malongs to native bags and Islamic souvenirs. Their target audience includes both locals and tourists, with products that reflect the rich diversity of Philippine culture.

We interviewed Rosie Tumarong Belog, the owner, who shared that their primary goal is to continue growing and expanding their business. To ensure smooth operations, they focus on maintaining up-to-date stock and delivering excellent customer service. While they experience slow sales days, Rosie noted that the positive feedback they receive speaks to the uniqueness and appeal of their products.

Reflections and Learnings

The interviews we conducted emphasized the crucial role of a customer-centric approach, a principle echoed by every business we spoke with. Understanding and meeting customer needs is the cornerstone of success, with empathy and exceptional customer service being vital in creating positive experiences. Additionally, maintaining well-managed inventory and offering incentives for both customers and employees are key strategies for ensuring satisfaction and motivation.

Through these discussions, I also realized that starting a business requires more than just a good idea—it demands passion, persistence, and resilience. The stories shared by the business owners deepened our respect for their hard work and reminded us that with the right mindset, we too can create something meaningful. After a day of interviews, my group and I felt a strong sense of accomplishment, inspired by the remarkable individuals we met and their dedication to their craft. This experience has fueled our determination to pursue our own entrepreneurial dreams with renewed vigor.

Jelly Shoes Are a Timeless Fashion Statement

Joyful, comfy and brazenly childlike, it is undeniably fun to throw on a pair of jelly shoes. These days, designers like Carmen Sol, Tory Burch and Ferragamo have given these whimsical shoes a sophisticated upgrade. Today, the jelly shoe has made a big comeback and is available in styles ranging from the classic sandal to high-rise wedges. Jelly shoes are even vegan-friendly, offering a great alternative to shoes made from leather.

You may think you know jelly shoes as trends of the ‘80s or children's footwear, but you may be surprised to find out that they have an international history that dates back to shortly after World War II.  

The History of Jelly Shoes

The origin of jelly shoes is uncertain. Vogue Paris has revealed that jelly shoes, which they refer to as “méduse” (which means “jellyfish” in French) shoes were created in 1946 during a post-war leather shortage. Other sources assert that the budget-friendly and waterproof shoes were a product of the plastic boom of the late 1950s. 

No matter when jelly shoes were created, they only became popular in the 1980s, with the surge of neon, rainbow bright colors and synthetic fashion trends.   In 1981, a bank president named Preston Haag Sr. quit his job to find a business he could operate that would include his family.  He soon traveled to South America in order to visit with American ambassadors and discover potential products for the United States market. 

At a reception in Brazil, Haag saw many different bright shoes worn by various young women. He ended up asking them about their footwear and learned that their manufacturer was Grendene, a small company that employed 3,000 of the 10,000 people living in the town of Farroupilha, Brazil. 

In March 1981, Haag made a deal to distribute Grendene's plastic shoes in the southeastern US through a new company that he named Grendha.  He first introduced jelly shoes in America at the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. 

While this launch was successful, jelly shoes only became a bonafide fashion hit in America in February 1983.   This was when Bloomingdale's, a fashionable and luxurious department store in New York City, ordered 2,400 pairs in nine different styles.  After this massive sale and resulting exposure, jelly shoes became the hottest summer sandal in the fashion world. 

Today, designers like Gucci and other big names have made luxe, high-fashion versions of jelly shoes and influencers like Alexa Chung have been spotted wearing them. 

What Are Jelly Shoes Made Of?

PVC is very flexible and resistant to abrasions at a low cost. 

Unfortunately PVC hasn’t had the best reputation, as it has been said to be toxic, constituting a health hazard during the manufacturing process.  One feature that sets Carmen Sol’s products apart from other brands is that they design and manufacture products that are Prop-65 compliant, which means they are nontoxic.

Company Interviews — Our First Week

Businesses exist all around us and it is something that we tend to overlook. From passing by boutiques in the mall to scrolling past an advertisement for a restaurant on our phones, it can be hard to imagine just how many businesses are out there worldwide and all the trials they must have gone through to get to where they are today. For our Technopreneurship subject, we were given the unique task of interviewing thirty companies in order to gain practical insights from employees and business owners alike. My group mates are Annriza Lam, Francis Padero, and Honey Rhose Petil, who I collaborated with for this project. And to start, we interviewed five businesses within the LimKetKai Mall for the first week. 

Getting Started ✅

In full honesty, this was not something that we are familiar with right away. As someone who hasn’t experienced this type of challenge before where we interview strangers about the business that they own or work at, it definitely was an intimidating task. We started with exploring the area in which we would like to interview first, which was in LimKetKai Mall. Then, the next day, we started creating our list of questions and narrowed it down to the type of questions that will suit the businesses that we plan to interview. We also simplified it so our interviewees will feel more comfortable answering it. We then went to the mall once more, our guide questions in hand, rehearsed, and began scouting for potential people who were willing to share their insights.

1. ALBERTO

Located in the West Concourse and on the 1st floor, this branch in LimKetKai Mall was the first business that we interviewed. From the information gathered, this shoe store has been in the leather goods industry for over thirty years, and their main goal is to offer quality and value-for-money products to Filipinos and make their lives better by providing one quality pair at a time. Their top products include wedges, sandals, school and office shoes, mens shoes and loafers, and even bags.

As for the interview itself, we talked to Aljen Padoc Tagaylo who was a Cash Reliever there. We were really grateful that she was willing to offer some of her time to share her firsthand experiences to us. When asked about the business’ goals and the key factors in making sure operations run smoothly on a day-to-day basis, she emphasized the importance of serving the customers comfortable products and giving the correct information when asked about their shoes. She also mentioned that the problem of being compared to other shoe brands can be a challenge as an employee working there, but she was quick to reassure that Alberto brings sellability and comfort to customers no matter what. Aljen confirmed this by saying that they receive positive feedback from loyal customers all the time when we asked her about customer feedback. And lastly, when we asked what advice she could give us as aspiring technopreneurs, she shared that it’s important to advertise and to look at what’s trending with the young generation in order to scale up our future business.

2. ACER CONCEPT STORE

Continuing along the West Concourse in the mall, the Acer concept store was the second business we had the opportunity to visit. Opened on August 22, 2022, this store is part of a successful expansion by Upson, which has launched Acer stores in five strategic locations since 2021. With a commitment to providing customers with a wide array of products and an immersive shopping experience, this store features everything from desktops and laptops to monitors, projectors, gaming gear, and even air purifiers. They also assist in installing games and operating systems, with their main target market being the middle class.

Chris John Cayetano, a sales technician, was our second interviewee for today. When asked about the shop’s goals, he emphasized the need to reach a certain quota every month. For that to be possible, he answered that not only does it take customers and prospects to ensure that the business runs smoothly, but bonuses and incentives help them a lot as well in boosting morale and financial well-being. To ensure customer satisfaction, he talked about the importance of good service and accommodation. However, he noted that a major challenge is the seasonal nature of gadget sales, leading to periods with fewer customers. He also advised that when starting a business, it can take months to regain the initial investment, even with a clear target audience, due to the unpredictable nature of the process.

3. FRENZIZ CROCHET

The third interviewee that we had the pleasure to meet was Jerly Galo Serana, a business owner at Frenziz Crochet. Her business, named after her daughter, specializes in creating one-of-a-kind handmade crochet items that are tailored to suit customers of all ages in terms of aesthetics and sizes. Jerly has been crocheting for two years as a hobby and officially started her business in 2021. Since then, she has expanded to several malls, including LimKetKai, Ayala Malls Centrio, Robinsons Iligan, Robinsons Valencia, and SM Downtown. While interviewing her, I really noticed how eager she was to spare time for us and share her business behind the scenes. Her passion for her craft and contentment with her business's progress shone through. Jerly emphasized the importance of hard work and quality in setting her products apart from competitors, believing that having a unique identity is key. Starting with almost no monetary investment, she focused on honing her talent, believing that if you have a gift, you should showcase it. When asked what keeps her business running smoothly, she answered that it’s all about perseverance and loving your own work. Though she faces challenges, including exhaustion and feeling stuck at times, her experience in HR, salesmanship, and maintaining a positive mental attitude helped her push through. Finally, she finds both happiness and financial stability in her work with Frenziz Crochet.

4. COLOURS FOTO

They offer products from DSLRs, mirrorless, advanced compacts, and adventure cameras to drones, gimbals and other accessories. This particular branch in LimKetKai opened its doors in October 2018, now also a part of other branches located in Ayala Center Cebu, Ayala Centrio CDO, and Island City Mall Tagbilaran.

In our fourth interview, Jen Revil shared that the business's main goals are to attract more customers and maintain full stock levels. To keep customers satisfied, they focus on meeting their needs with the right products. However, she noted that challenges are present due to a lack of customers and sales, as their products don't really need to be bought that often. While the business generally maintains steady profits when stocked, slow days and monthly sales quotas present difficulties, and they don't always meet their targets.

5. RTB VARIETY STORE

The last business that we interviewed was on display as a bazaar for the Higalaay Festival in Limketkai Mall Rotunda. Aside from this event, they also displayed their booth for Eid al-Fitr, ‘Farm to Market’ event spearheaded by the Department of Agriculture Region X, and for the ‘Pinoy Tiangge’ event for Philippine Independence Day in the same location. They offer a variety of products that showcase the diversity of Philippine handicrafts, including malongs in batik designs, native bags and shirts, Islamic souvenirs, Maranao apparel and decorations, and even products from Thailand. They have a wide range of target customers, with foreigners and people outside the region in general.

We interviewed Rosie Tumarong Belog, the business owner, who shared that they primarily aim that their business continues to thrive and branch out. To keep things running smoothly, they ensure stocks are complete and up-to-date before opening, and prioritize good customer service. Customers can buy in bulk and enjoy discounts and freebies, which helps maintain satisfaction. When we asked them if they have any challenges, they answered that they do experience slow sales days, but the positive feedback they receive shows their products' uniqueness and appeal.
