CONTEMPORARY ART DAILY - EKTOR GARCIA:
ektor garcia
nudos de tiempo, Cabaret Voltaire, Zurich, May 20 – September 25, 2022
Curated by Fabian Flückiger, Salome Hohl.
“The artisanal object landscapes by ektor garcia (*1985) are frozen moments within an ongoing process. Using a variety of materials and techniques, the artist creates temporary structures that can be reworked at any time. Set in juxtaposition, the crocheted textiles, copper wire connections, ceramic forms, and metal castings function like free-form poems that constantly generate fresh resonances. For each exhibition, garcia produces new constellations that resist the urge to establish categories and hierarchies. They are punk and queer. The sensual installations break with narrative forms that are intended to convey a certain story without obliviousness to history. Through the materials and symbols, multi-layered content traces can be picked up on without imposing themselves”. - Exhibition text.
“The artist’s work involves intense physical labor. Countless loops, knots, and fingerprints are evidence of his daily work, in which chaos and logic, connection and detachment exist in parallel. garcia strives for the imperfect, the beauty of the handmade, unique with its flaws...” - Exhibition text.
“Because of his nomadic practice, his art is invariably exposed to new influences. These do not, however, become fixed. Contributing to this openness is the fact that the objects are detached from craft traditions due to the sometimes unusual combinations of materials and techniques.......; the result is a unique piece with uncontrollable, surprising formations”. - Exhibition Text.
“Some of the crochet works on display are reminiscent of the US fiber art movement of the 1960s, which addressed the division of the sexes by means of female-dominated domestic labor. garcia uses the emancipatory power of crochet but expands the feminist material vocabulary through disconcerting connections between material and technique” - Exhibition text.
“garcia always writes his name in lower case. In this way, he recalls US author bell hooks, and the idea that the content of a work should take precedence over its authorship. This negotiation of subject-object relationships and 3 the breaking of hierarchies runs through his entire body of work. His exhibitions occupy floors, walls, ceilings, and intermediate spaces in equal measure.” - Exhibition text.

ektor garcia’s artwork was featured on the landing page of Contemporary art dailty, and I absolutely love their artwork, and how it is written about in the accompanying exhibition text, which I have quoted above. The nudos de tiempo exhibition is right up my ally. I love the way that the artworks are hung, and how some gather on the floor. I imaging there would be a quite bodily engagement with these works, varying in size, and being upright, reflecting a standing person. You could also weave in around these hanging works.
Alot of what was written about this work, reminded me of interests and ideas I am researching in my own practice. This idea of the works being ‘frozen moments’ - things that can be re worked, a temporary point, is an aspect that my current work shares. I have just now re worked what I have shown for formative, added and subtracted from it, in preparation for an exhibition next week. I think that this element is something present in lots of textile & collage practices. It speaks to movement - fluidity, and I suppose agency. The text also mentioned how the works are ‘unpredictable’ - this focus on materiality and movement - is reminiscent of my anti-form research.
The way that garcia “..expands the feminist material vocabulary through disconcerting connections between material and technique..” is something that I am hoping to achieve I suppose, through expanding my materials. My intent and concept has begun to open more, which I think has developed my artwork.
There are many ideas and concepts about this exhibition that interest me, in progressing my work, I hope to capture some of what garcia’s work is achieving....
- resist the urge to establish categories and hierarchies - speaking to the precedent of hierarchies surround femme/masc - craft
- sensual - feminine energy/identity
- punk
- feminist vocabulary - feminist narratives
- imperfect, unique, hand-made, flaws - this could add personality, movement, agency,
- Through the materials and symbols, multi-layered content traces can be picked up on without imposing themselves”. - expansion of materials....
