Some bonus thoughts about the characters:

I really don't remember Sollux's personality or character arc. I don't even know if he ever had one. He had a rivalry with Eridan because racism I guess??? I really don't remember why the two were fighting. Not like it matters after Eridan dies. After that Sollux becomes "a bunch of pixels that stands next to Aridia" beca-

FUCK I misspelled Aradia, how *embarassing*. Oh well, I'll play it where it lands.

Anyway, Sollux and Aradia are like, dating or something? They're like, in love? I don't know why. I don't know why Sollux does anything. Fucker just stands around after Eridan dies, and the four lines of dialog he had before that doesn't really craft a character I like to think about a lot.

Actually, that reminds me- Sollux was the one who translated Sgrub, there's the Aradia connection.

Speaking of Aradia, what's her *character*? She was like, a happy living person, then a sad(?) ghost and then a angry(?)/sad(?) robot and then finally became a happy(?) god tier? What? Who is this person? Why are they smiling? Is it a Disco Elysium reference?

Seriously, I can't remember anything about Aradia. She basically just wants to see how homestuck goes down, so I guess she is just as compelling as anyone who reads homestuck.

Kanaya is like, a vampire or something. She's a boring character. Like, it was cool watching her kill Eridan but after that she becomes Rose's meek woman-servant-lover character.

Of course, I say servant as a cruel joke. I know Kanaya isn't Rose's servant, I said that because I thought it was funny and showed how I believe that Kanaya basically lives in Rose's shadow once Eridan dies.

Her *one* desire to kill Gamzee never happens because Gamzee can't die or the story can't happen!!! What a load of shit!!! Fucking time paradox shit, but I know this complaint isn't valid- Metal Gear Solid 3 did this too and I love that game, so Homestuck gets a pass on this one.

Nepeta is a cat, but has wolverine claws and a drawing tablet. She also does speculative romance stuff too. These are all fun traits. Then she died.

Feferi is a fish who eventually died.

Equius is a horse who's like, sweaty and stuff and I like him. A classic incompetent bad guy character. He's all horny and shit and racist but is also a total fuck up, like awww the little baby fell down time to pick him back up so you can knock him over again how cute :)

Eridan is a fish who's like, an involuntary celibate or something. He's also an incompetent bad guy character- I have a soft spot for villains and bad guys who are repulsive but also big fuck ups that show some hint/ illusion of humanity/ being good.

Describing it here makes me realize how vast and vague those conditions are, like perceiving repugnancy isn't inherent to life itself. Anything can be repulsive if you got the right peepers!

Yeah, but Eridan is like a bad person or something. He's got L rizz and everyone hated him. He was like, sad and shit that he was alone but he wanted to team up with Jack Noir so he basically deserves to be unloved forever I guess. Eridan is like if Vriska was just a side character. Well, that's not true since Vriska wrote in her last will and testament that she felt bad about being a killing machine who is also a huge bitch has bullies people whilst Eridan said, uh... something I guess? I don't really remember what Eridan said, or if he showed any regret or sadness about being in a murder-society of racism and shit. Maybe he did? I think he tried rizzing up Nepeta but failed. I think he also tried to rizz up Jade? Whatever, I guess Eridan never got the time to show the reader that he's just a poor abused little did-nothing-wrong like Vriska so he's forever just a villain.

ONE YEAR DOWN, BABY, THREE TO GO!!! It's been pretty touch and go, and probably will continue to be, but the longer it goes the more likely Cipher Academy is to build up a strong enough following to keep going, so fingers crossed that the volumes keep selling well!

This week's chapter opens with a beautiful color page showing off everyone's color schemes (except the teachers' for some reason) and a quick review of the major codes we've seen so far. Most of the hair colors are pretty standard, Koshibai and Umitsubame notwithstanding, but the biggest surprise for me has to be Dekiai, who I would have bet money was blue, but nope! She's pink! I guess water can be any color if you dye it, I just figured the idea would be for her to look like a melted Kogoe. Maybe they went with pink to obscure that a bit more or because they looked too similar in color?

Speaking of Dekiai, the jury for Toshusai's trial being several Dekiais with different pigtails and beauty marks was a really fun touch, I especially liked the one whose hair popped when she felt scandalized. The fact that the prosecution is named Hakuai and clearly doesn't have any shading suggests that she's all white, so I wonder if perhaps each Dekiai was a different color with a unique name. I'm also curious if they're all just the one Dekiai playing multiple parts, or if they're each their own unique AI. I'm inclined to believe the former, but who knows

Another cute detail, when the Dekiais call for a guilty verdict, their beauty marks turn into spades. Looks like someone read Homestuck

Onto the meat of the chapter, this is really the type of philosophy that Nisio Isin loves to talk about, huh? There was an entire chapter in Medaka Box about how there are no easy or right answers when it comes to ethics, and it could be argued that that was one of the major themes of Medaka Box as a whole. This chapter's suggestion that the concept of a person is a societal construct is certainly novel, and while it does go out of its way to paint Toshusai as the good guy in this scenario, it's also clear that we're not meant to necessarily feel good about it. Her actions freed slaves and toppled an oppressive government: objectively good! Her actions did also create child soldiers and result in half a million deaths: objectively bad. Reducing whether this was a good thing or not to the number of lives "created" and lost leaves...a bad taste in the mouth, I feel. Like, did Toshusai intentionally give weapons to the kids with the intention of creating an uprising? It doesn't sound like it, it sounds like she was asked to create a weapon a child could use, and then it happened to end up in the hands of children who needed liberation

Intention and consequence are only linked via action and otherwise have no bearing on each other; whatever Toshusai wanted to happen when she made the Gun Eye is irrelevant, the fact of the matter is that people died because of a weapon she created, at least that's how she sees it. Even if she did liberate slaves, it's not like she's a revolutionary who carefully planned out how to save them, she was a child who made a toy that was lethal. A weapon's purpose is to kill, a sentiment that I've surprisingly seen crop up a lot in Jump lately, and Toshusai knows that the only outcome that was ever going to come of making the Gun Eyes was that people would die

Of course, how Toshusai sees herself and how everyone else in the story sees her is only part of the equation - the rest is how the fans see her. Is she a liberator or a death dealer? Which is more important, the right to freedom or the right to security? I have my opinions on the matter, but I can't claim that my opinion is the objective correct one or that other readers will feel the same

I'm still endeared to Toshusai and I still like her as a major lead; she did something that helped people, but through a method that she resents, both because there might have been a way to bring about a peaceful resolution and because even if there wasn't, the presence of that method now means that more people are in danger in the long run. Even if the child revolution was a net gain of life and personhood, the Gun Eyes still exist and are still put in the hands of children, and probably not to overthrow their oppressors. Toshusai means to fix that mistake and prevent any further deaths by any means necessary, and that's a goal I can respect

I haven't drew anything about homestuck in some time (in general, I haven't drew a lot since the last 4 months I think, it was kinda hard to get inspiration again) , and drawing Nepeta made me a bit happy, she gives me comfort and she, is so cute. 🙏

I wanted to do something that looked happy and colorful, since nepeta's personality is like that, also trying to give her another outfit, but I wasn't sure if you would like it, so I just added a few different things w/o changing the basic! I also added some chibis, including Equius, because you asked for him too, and goes perfect with nepeta. n_n

EAOB my beloved....when will they FINALLY come out with the book that discusses the fact that your superpower is common sense 😔😔😔 and that everyone in your town is just stupid as fuck......they were very childish and fun books and they had SUPERPOWERS from eating POTATO CHIPS and it was GREAT.

so I just checked the dnd anon tag and turns out I DID already send in the ancestors dice collections, and I did end up contradicting myself because it's been a while since I wrote that and It's even more vibes-based than usual with anything relating to the ancestors, lol. Sorry about that everyone!! I guess just treat the new one like an alternate possibility? Idk I forgot what I'd already done.

Anyways, caliborn and calliope's dice collections (hopefully I haven't done this already too): Calliope: A bunch of cute sets that remind her of her friends, and many given to her by her friends!! She doesn't have a favorite set, there's no way she can choose. So many with fun inclusions and bright colors!! She's learning to carve her own dice, and can't wait to finish a few balanced sets to give to her friends. She has a dice hotel, not a dice jail, so that they can rest up when they're not performing well. She also has a small dice tower.

Caliborn: Really edgy dice. Black with red numbers and metalwork on the edges to look cool. Basically every dice set he has he thinks makes him seem cool or more evil or intimidating. Also like half of his dice are loaded but he can't remember which ones. He has a big dice tower that the dice often get stuck in, and a dice jail that almost always has at least one die in it. He has broken his dice tower in frustration on multiple occasions. As always, this is mostly based on vibes and I'm happy to hear anyone else's thoughts!! And sorry again for sending in something that I already did, I forgot where I left off. I'm still here and okay, life has just been a bit much lately so I haven't had as much time. last night, a little homestuck before bed and :

-i dont think i can maintain the facade of composure or coherence anymore. this is five seconds before john find several people brutally slaughtered, including his own dad, and he himself get stabbed to death. look at him! look at how silly this child is. my zillyhoo son, its unfair theyre piling up all this shit to you.

-i get why rose went grimdark tbh. things are pretty bad out there. it fucks me up that she's like, taking over the suicide mission. and how awful it is that she'd gone off the deep end that she looked at her parents dead body and only think of killing. something i noticed between the two light players is that theyre always burdening themselves with the hard, difficult tasks alone even though the team wanted it to be done as a group effort. its commendable but not always a good thing.

-its pretty funny that the kids with shitty guardians' have a wildly contrasting reactions to their dead parents like

-fuck it. an AU. kids being kids. no sburb no tragedy. theyre just online friends. jade's grandpa is alive, he took jade into civilization often so she's not undersocialized and knows how to function if she wants to live a normal life. and as a birthday gift he took all of her friends to the island as a surprise for her 13th birthday. they spend the day catching frogs and playing paintball. and then at night, rose and jade urge everyone to try lucid dreaming. none of them made it because theyre all too busy making fun of john's movie selection. dave is beatboxing over squiddles music. and then right in the middle of their playing, a ship crash landed to the island. it was the trolls.

-uhhghgghghhh i need to see. an animatic. of jade and dave's fight. with bec noir. look at all the moves theyre making it would have been one hell of a fight and we were robbed of a proper flash with boisterous music! space time vs omnipotence lets fucking go!

-speaking of vriska, wow she really is giving her all in these pages. her last stand with jack. the enemy she took part in creating. she knew she was going to die and done her best asking out literally everyone alive. and the best/worst thing is, everyone accepts. terezi literally came to her with all the rp outfit they used to do. and, i know i should be shocked but im just laughing at karkat showing up late with the sloppy makeout note. And she gave the cutest most adorable date proposal to john like, ugh its cute teenage puppy love! yes, i think they'd go well together. I dunno, maybe its my kimharry enjoyer heart speaking, but i think characters who'd done terrible violence should be with someone who only met them after they strived to be someone better, or at least a blank slate. that way, they get a fresh start and can focus on improving instead of getting distracted with hurt feelings and old wounds. also i am not burdening terezi, aradia, tavros, and all of the kids she personally maimed with All of That tbh. unless they want to ofc.

So obviously everyone in the replies is saying Fantasy High because it is the forst one they did and also is currently airing its third season and also is just a general community darling because you either got attached to these characters as a high schooler or you're looking at them and youre like '🥺 babies.....' , but I Wish To Make A Guide About It because theres more nuance than just 'Fantasy high's a good start but you can really kinda pick any of 'em.' And 'Doing them in order of airing's good'.

Dimension 20's whole deal is built upon the different energies at the different tables and the unique DMing styles that rotate in, which heavily varies the tone and texture of each new season. The group for Fantasy High (the tried and true Intrepid Heroes) is the most frequently recurring, so if the thing you see yourself wanting most outta Dimension 20 is a familiarity with the people at the table, you can go to Fantasy High Freshman Year first, but I think it'd be better to start with Unsleeping City Season 1, because the players have gotten a campaign and a deeper familiarity with the rules under their belts, meaning there's far more unimpeded improvising and creativity at the table and they really properly shine.

If you are looking to see some crazy shit go down: Starstruck. Starstruck Starstruck Starstruck. It is BONKERS in THE BEST WAY. I love it So Much and everyone is On and Unhinged. It reminds me of my favorite parts of Homestuck, and I need you to understand how much of an endorsement that is. If me saying these things makes you go 'But I don't wanna have nowhere to go after watching the big chaos season', then you should instead start with The Seven (my favorite season for years until Burrow's End aired) and then figure out how long you wanna hold off on watching Starstruck, but definitely do not save it for last, lest you risk building an insurmountable version of it in your head and leave disappointed.

If you're most intrigued by The Drama (angst), A Crown of Candy is probably your best entry point. If you are most intrigued by The Drama (gay✨️) then You Need To Start With A Court Of Fae And Flowers. This is an order.

If you wanna just do an Aabriya Iyengar feature (can you tell who my favorite is?) and figure the rest of D20 out from there, I have a full order for you: A Court of Fae and Flowers, The Seven, Misfits and Magic, The Ravening War, then Burrow's End. You can jump on or off of this order at any time should something in one of the seasons draw you to investigate another, but if you do, I would still suggest you not watch these specific seasons out of this order once you have started Misfits and Magic.

As for seasons you should Absolutely Not Start On: Any sequel season (for obvious reasons), Pirates of the Leviathan and Mice and Murder (for Pandemic Production Reasons, although this is also a bit of a double edged sword because how do you bop over to that after watching seasons where the people at the table can Actually Organically Bounce Off Eachother and the sound quality isn't Painful), Shriek Week and Coffin Run (their vibes and structures are the farthest removed from the rest of the program), Neverafter (you ought to watch at least one unrelated season featuring the Intrepid Heroes before experiencing them here, just trust me), and The Ravening War (this one's a prequel and also has a structure to it that would be Super Weird as a first foray into Dimension 20, but if you've got your heart set on seeing Matt Mercer DM a Dimension 20 season, it's probably not too bad an option)

Seasons I would consider Incredibly Neutral for starting on: Escape from the Bloodkeep (one of the shorter ones, so easy to get through. The energy is very good, the story is cute and funny and fun), Misfits and Magic (barring my Iyengar Feature Order), Dungeons and Drag Queens (seeing Brennan guiding the Questing Queens through their first ever time playing D&D is very very nice, I like it), and Mentopolis (I cried in the emotional climax to this season and also it kind of changed my life??? I think about it so much. But as far as Watch Order, this can go anywhere)

So yeah, there's my hastily slapped together watch guide for which Dimension 20 season to start on.

As someone new to dimension 20 where do veterans recommend I start?

That sounds... ominous. We have a couple of characters with ‘feathery wings’ in the comic - such as Davesprite, and everyone derived from his kernel - but none of them are particularly demonic. I hope this doesn’t make Davesprite an ill omen - that’s the last thing his psyche needs.

I wonder which kind of angel Sollux is talking about? His revulsion makes sense if it’s those biblically-accurate fuckers, but it would also be pretty funny if trolls just thought normal angels were ‘terrible looking’. 

Sollux seems particularly grossed out by the wings - the most normal feature of any angel - so that might actually be what’s going on.

This was always a particularly funny line in SBaHJ. Earth isn’t even supposed to exist yet, so Terezi shouldn’t be able to make this reference. 

Maybe Dave is going to put his comics on a server in the Furthest Ring, the same way Rose uploaded her own proudest creation. Since it’s in the Incipisphere, it’d be ‘temporally dislocated’, and Terezi could read it before it was written.

Jade was sure ‘everything was going to be ok’, because she’s an optimist. Sollux seems to be the opposite, so things might be getting distorted in the other direction.

We know that these prophesized ‘deaths’ are most likely referring to the deaths of the troll dream selves, and Sollux - who doesn’t know much about Sburb yet - might not have realized that they all have extra lives. Hell, even if some of them do die for real, there’s time travel and Kernelsprites to bring them back. 

In a world like Homestuck, things are very rarely hopeless.

I think Terezi can tell, just from their text conversations, that something is very, very wrong. 

I’ll admit that editing out their quirks makes you miss cute moments like this, where they playfully swap them.

oh my god YES i love infodumping OK i made quick like notes over the designs but ill write them down too in case they’re hard to read. This is gonna be a lil long so, it’ll be under this read more.

OK fire things first, Gordon and Benrey were the easiest, so. When I start the trollization (lol) process for certain characters, the first step is always a symbol. (If its a fantroll the first step is theme, but characters Im turning into trolls already have their own things going on, so its all about finding a good symbol.)

For Gordon, it was insanely straightforward use of the lambda symbol, I integrated it in a few parts of the outfit, it was easy. Not a lot to say there.

For BENREY, I only used the INSIDE of the BM logo because I thought it looked like a helmet and I thought it fit them more personally that way. Using the whole BM logo would have just made it. Black Mesa. Not Benrey. SO! Little helmet looking thing. I thought it fit!

NOW TOMMIE was so fun. I decided to use the alchemical symbol for Pyrite, or Fools Gold. This fit for many reasons.

The name Fool’s Gold was interesting cuz Tommy is considered something like that i guESS by the people around him, and he is associated with yellow (so like gold + i made him a goldblood SO.)

BUT pyrite was used in the 16th and 17th centuries to ignite the sparks needed to use guns! People thought it was gold, because it looks remarkably like it, so. To me that is like. An underestimated metal that actually packs a punch. Just like Tommy :)

The fact that it was used for guns also helps, since Tommy is the best with guns in the team! It all worked out.

Dr. Coomer was also fun. He has my favorite design, I think. He was the hardest to pin down, but it all worked out when I found the alchemical symbol for Hour (as in time.)

Its a cute symbol and my first thought was that Dr. Coomer would,,,love it JDBDMFH but my second thought was the fact that Gordon relied (maybe incorrectly) on Dr. Coomer to tell the team how many hours they had left to reach the lambda lab! Dr. Coomer’s classpect was one of the first chosen so this actually also just happened to work out with that… Its pretty straightforward too.

I included the symbol in the little heart shapes of his horns (i love them so much), his belt, and a little bit of his coat with the rounder collar! The symbol also kinda looking the way I draw his hair is just a fun plus. So much fun to design. I really think it suits him!

And then there’s Bubbie, who is probably second most straightforward next to Gordon. The alchemical symbol chosen for Bubby was the one for Hot Fire. Gestures vaguely. Yeah, that’s Bubbie.

Its all sharp triangles, so of course I included the symbol in their horns, but also in their vest. Its ALL triangles. subtle enough to just be a sweater though HDNDHD but. The symbol is there. It was perfect fit.

So there is everyone. When I finish designing G-man, Forzen, and Darnold Ill write down notes for them too in case anyone is interested in those. For now this is all I have. what i love about these semi niche internet works of fiction is that i can beat everyone else to the punch in making fanart for it and then you get first mover advantage in establishing the collective headcanon for how they are supposed to look.

ive already talked what is probably an outrageous ammount in almost unseemly slavish tones about this work of fiction but dear god, truly favourite work of literature ive read in my life, and keep in mind i added a couple of references to paul auster and homestuck amongst the joke titles here so is not like im a lego on the matter

its always fun to read a story because i have the bad habit of completly disregarding whatever the narration says description wise and just design the characters in my head going exclusively off vibes. with that said i do know cordelia is slightly chubby, that grant is a bit of a gym dude, that azad is vaguely persian, that anne is a young girl, that michael is a dude with long white hair, etc. but i dont really know for sure how the ells, or ever hector or moon are supposed to look so if this diverges from what you imagined, let my silly in-jokes be your point of reference and let me know if you caught them all

Tell me why you love Gamtav; give me a whole rambling essay if you can. I like seeing people excited over the things and ships they like!

Oh, are you sure you want this? Do you really want to open Pandora's Box? Are you ready for the amount of rambling I can do about GamTav? How much time do you have? Because this is going to be a doozy. I haven't even started writing it and I can tell.

And before I get into it, people gotta know that most of this is based off of pre-murderstuck Gamzee

What do I like about GamTav? What do I like about GamTav??? One of the things that plays into me loving this ship so much is how much I love Gamzee and Tavros as individuals. Whenever I start reading a new piece of media, without question my favorite characters are almost always the really, really nice ones. Boku no Hero Academia? Kirishima. Anohana? Poppo. Legend of Korra? Bolin. And in the beginning of Homestuck, Gamzee and Tavros are just really, really NICE.

Oh, well, Gamzee is really, really nice. When we first see Tavros, he’s being a little shit to the kids, but that's because he was intentionally trying to troll. But once we get into Act 5 and we see Tavros interact with his friends, we realize he's generally a really kind person. His conversations with Nepeta, Gamzee and Aradia are all really sweet. His pesterlog with Vriska, which is the first one we get to see after he is revealed to us as a character, immediately paints a picture of him as someone struggling with his self-esteem and someone who is trying really hard to build himself up as a person. Way to fuckin’ endear me to a character IMMEDIATELY.

For most of the early comic until Act 5, we see all the trolls trolling the kids and even talking shit back and forth to each other. Gamzee was one of the first trolls who we see be purely sweet and supportive to his friends. His first pesterlog after we’re introduced to him is with Karkat and Karkat does nothing but talk shit. xD He does his usual song and dance of saying just the absolute worst things possible in that Karkat way of his and Gamzee just laughs and nods and basically says, “Yeah brother, you go, I love you, you're my best friend.”

We see Gamzee talk with Equius and we already know at this point that Equius is weird, but Gamzee is so jazzed to be talkin’ with his friend. He's just so supportive of Equius and even when Equius tells Gamzee that he must stop doing soper, Gamzee just says, “Okay, sure, you got it, I trust what you're telling me because you're my friend.” Now Equius is not actually ready for Gamzee to listen to him and backtracks and is like, “Wait, no, you don't have to listen to me, let's roleplay instead,” and Gamzee's like, “I don't know how to roleplay, but I'll try for you bro.” He’s just really fucking cute???

Short version: When we meet them, Tavros is someone you want to root for and Gamzee is just the nicest guy on the planet.

Gamzee loves his friends so much and from early on it's made apparent that he wants to love and support them, and would honestly do a lot for them even if he doesn't know what he's doing.

Also along with just being a generally sweet guy Tavros is the nerd archetype I love? He loves the troll equivalent of Pokemon and card games and other things like that. Also he just really loves animals? And I always love the characters who love animals. It's a really big weakness I have. Not to mention, talking with them? That's so COOL? So badass??? Like, UM???? He could control them, but he doesn't like forcing them to do bad things against their will. (Going off of how when suggested he control the imps to defeat them, but feels like that would be unfair/mean.)

SPEAKING OF THE IMPS. Of the twelve trolls, Tavros and Gamzee are the two of them who BEFRIENDED their imps. Isn't that so fucking rad????? They both started off fighting them at first, but then they both later mention that they are able to chill with their imps instead. Gamzee shares pie with them and Tavros communicates with them using his powers. I freaking LOVE that parallel. When I first noticed it I almost keeled over. See, I'm also a sucker for characters who like to attempt peace before conflict, so of course I'm going to love that both of them made friends instead of enemies.

So Act 5 Homestuck has already set me up to basically completely love these two characters. Now, I am a really big shipper. In almost every piece of media I go into I generally come out with ships and that's a big way that I engage with fandom. Now Homestuck, I actually didn't ship that much at first when I first started reading, which is pretty strange for me. I think I just kind of let the ships fall into my lap up until that point. I know my brain had really enjoyed the ideas of Karkat and Terezi, Dave and Terezi, and had even teased inklings of "What if?" and "Oh, I like them," about Rose and Kanaya. But for the most part I wasn't really into Homestuck for shipping at first.

The concept of GamTav, or PBJ as it was more commonly referred to then, was introduced to me by my friends. I had two irl friends who were reading the comic with me and they were ahead of me by some decent amount of pages at the time. At one point they started making references to PBJ and really liking PBJ and I was a little confused because I didn't quite know what they were referring to at first. I learned pretty soon that PBJ was Gamzee and Tavros and I remember being really excited for the ship because it was the first time I'd seen my friends get that excited for a ship. Which is really funny because now in the twilight years of the Homestuck fandom, of the three of us, I'm the only one gripping white-knuckled onto GamTav and breathing it like my life depends on it, while the other two have moved on to much different things. If I'm being honest, I'm pretty sure one of them doesn't even really like Gamzee that much anymore, but respects how much I love him and lets me rant and rave to her about him whenever I want.

It wasn't long after that that I finally got to the infamous "Make out a little" conversation between Gamzee and Tavros. I read the pesterlog and suddenly everything I had seen and heard from my friends made sense. I mean, not that I'm saying that's the ONLY reason GamTav makes sense. I just mean I understood what my friends specifically were talking about. Of the pesterlogs we've seen between them before that, Gamzee and Tavros obviously had a decent friendship. I'm pretty sure in the comic Gamzee was the first person to have a pesterlog with Tavros who is genuinely nice to him. (And this is conversation happens directly after Tavros’ conversation with Vriska, so it’s a wild contrast.) So as a friendship, I was already super down with Gamzee and Tavros-- you know what? Now that I think about it, I feel like I remember in [S] Make Her Pay being disappointed that Gamzee and Tavros were fighting alone and not with each other. Because a lot of the other trolls had paired up to be cool duos, you know? We had Karkat and Terezi, Feferi and Sollux, Nepeta and Equius, and I think I remember being bummed that Gamzee and Tavros weren't paired up. So I, at the very least, think I wanted things for these two even if I hadn't stepped into the realm of actually shipping them yet. I don't remember, this was YEARS ago.

Anyway, the infamous makeout conversation happens, and I'm sold hard for life. I have a lot of other Homestuck ships that I'm into and I enjoy, but none have ever, ever, ever, ever come close to GamTav.

I realize that I've written so much and I still haven't gotten to the meat of why I like them.

So I like ships where the parties involved are best friends. I love it when the characters in a ship are bros who love hanging out, who love doing silly things together. That awesome video "What your favorite Homestuck ship says about you" had me dead to rights. Called me out so hard. My ideal ship dynamic is "being stupid together"? Way to come for the throat. That's exactly it. At their core, Gamzee and Tavros are one of the funnest bro combinations I have ever seen. And what makes them so fun is both of them are huge dorks. HUGE dorks.

When we first meet Gamzee, he stares off into the colors of his miracle modus while making the most ridiculous face, tries to unicycle but just fuckin' pieruettes right off if it because his legs are too short, and just straight up reaches into his modus with his bare hands. Don't even get me started on how he scares himself with his own horns. That shit kills me.

We've already talked about how Tavros is a huge nerd, so that's covered. But like… have you heard him rap? This guy just gets so into it and has so much fun while simultaneously sounding so silly. He's flirty and awkward and ridiculous and has this shit eating grin on all the time.

They are those two friends who get up to shenanigans where everyone else around them just kind of shakes their head and thinks that they're so dumb (in an affectionate way), but they don't care because all they DO care about is how much fun they're having together.

One of my favorite things about Homestuck in general is it lets its characters be bad at things. John and Karkat suck at coding. Gamzee, Tavros, and Dave are bad at rapping. Rose becomes a prolific author, but I would argue she's bad at writing when she's 13 because, wow is it a slog to get through her wizard fanfiction LMAO.

And GamTav is a perfect example of two people who just have fun together being bad at things together. There's no pretense of needing to be cool or needing to be good at something or any type of shame or embarrassment. They're just so silly and they don't mind being silly around each other and they never make the other person ashamed of who they are. We even see some of that last bit in the comic. Gamzee never puts Tavros down. In one conversation, he acknowledges Tavros' disability, but doesn't taunt Tavros for it, doesn't make it a joke, or make him feel bad. It's just acknowledged and then they move on. Then Tavros mentions that while he doesn't share Gamzee's religious or spiritual views, he is supportive of them. I am such a sucker for shit like that.

In every way, shape, and form, Gamzee and Tavros are supportive of each other and just and totally uplift the other person. Both of these characters go through so much verbally (both jokingly and maliciously) at the hands of their peers for being who they are that Gamzee and Tavros' conversations were so refreshing to just see them be unabashedly themselves with another person.

And they make each other happy! Tavros' first conversation with Gamzee was the first time we see where Tavros is purely elated to be talking to the person he is talking to. And Tavros obviously makes Gamzee really happy. They just make each other so happy! And I love that shit!

Gamzee is, without restraint, supportive of everything that is Tavros. Gamzee is the type of person who would look at anything Tavros wants to do or is trying to do and put his whole heart in supporting Tavros and telling him, "Yeah bro, you can do this, you're amazing, I love you, go get 'em, you're the best, you can do anything you put your mind to,” and I love that for Tavros.

Gamzee was the friend I spent all of Homestuck wishing Tavros had. Tavros spent so much time talking to Vriska, interacting with Vriska, adventuring with Vriska. And that entire time I was just wishing that Gamzee was there instead, just so Tavros would have someone to be nice to him.

After murderstuck, I spent years waiting for Gamzee and Tavros to meet in a dream bubble. That was all I wanted. I wanted Gamzee to have to look Tavros in the eye and face what he had done, own up to everything to the person he loved most in the world. But of course, post murderstuck, Gamzee gets everything stripped away from him that made him the character he was in the beginning. It wasn't even a satisfying villain arc! It was just confusing! I feel like I could have dealt with it if Gamzee was a well-rounded villain. But instead his entire villain shtick was just surrounded by a bunch of question marks! I spent all of Homestuck waiting to learn what exactly was going on with Gamzee and then we never got that and that fucked me up.

And of course, oh, of course, up until the very end of the series, in the very, very, very last animation we ever see, Homestuck Act 7, Tavros is standing by Vriska's side, as he has had to do since the very beginning.

I haven't read the epilogues or Homestuck 2, so I'm not going to touch on anything that happens in those series and I would appreciate it if no one responded to this with spoilers. Don't even tell me things like, "Oh, you'll like Gamzee," or "Oh, you'll hate Gamzee," or anything like that. I don't want any hints. I already got enough. I want to form my own opinion when I finally get the energy to go in.

Nowadays, I stick almost exclusively to humanstuck AU's for my GamTav. Because even if canon GamTav wasn't so sad and depressing, there are other things that make me way too sad to think about. As a bronze blood, Tavros's lifespan is going to be significantly shorter than Gamzee's. No matter the good or bad context surrounding their relationship. Even if they were the perfect, fluffy, happy couple in canon, I can't deal with that lifespan difference. It breaks my goddamn heart.

I live in a world where I can rewrite the circumstances surrounding these characters and make it play out in a way that is much more to my liking. Writing them in humanstuck AU's lets me take away all of the things that make my heart hurt and instead repurpose them for really meaningful, emotional character building arcs and that's my main focus when it comes to GamTav.

Something I'm also really picky with when it comes to this ship is that I need the core of Gamzee and Tavros' character growth to happen apart from each other. I have found that I don't like stories that center Gamzee and Tavros or their relationship as the pivotal point of their development. I don't like when Gamzee is the pillar of Tavros' confidence. I do like when Gamzee helps out building Tavros' confidence by being supportive and saying nice things and encouraging him, but I don't like it when he is the main source. I don't want Tavros' growth to be hinged on Gamzee being in his life.

The same goes for Gamzee. I don't like stories where Tavros is the one thing keeping Gamzee from doing bad things. I don't like when their relationship is framed as being the one thing keeping Gamzee from going murder mode all over his friends again. I've read fics where Gamzee struggles either with murderous instincts as a troll or mental health as a human and Tavros is one of the only things that keeps him from going off the deep end. I don't like that. I want Gamzee's growth to be primarily on his own or at the very least not supported by his romantic partner. Of course, I love it when Tavros is there when he needs him to hold him or soothe him or say kind things or help him through his struggles. I'm not saying I don't want Tavros to comfort him at all or ever, I just don't want Tavros to be his sole anchor.

I just love idiot best friends in love.

Oh, OH! ALSO. Gamzee doesn’t give a FUCK about the hemospectrum. One of the first things he says to Equius is how he doesn’t get it, how he’s not better than anyone else, how he doesn’t even know how to ACT better than anyone else. How am I not supposed to love that?

Opposite sides of the hemospecturm relationships are so fun. I love the idea of Gamzee entering a room full of strangers and them being like “Oh no! :O !!!! Scary subjuggulator!!” and Tavros comes rushing over all happy and excited and they just snuggle all cute and gross and everyone watching’s jaw just drops.

This might sound weird, but I also think one of the things that endear me to characters is them getting misinterpreted and then me having fun drawing them more ‘accurately’? Tavros is so often depicted as uwu soft weepy boi and I love drawing him with a mischievous grin just as ready to do something stupid and get himself into trouble as Gamzee is. Equius TOLD Tavros not to go near the stairs with his new robo legs. What is one of the things Tavros does immediately? Go try the fuckin’ stairs. And he KEEPS DOING IT.

*lays down on the floor* I just… I just want domestic GamTav where they move into a nice wheelchair accessible home (modified in a similar way to Tavros' hive in Pesterquest) and Gamzee massages Tav's back when it aches and tells him he's the light of his life and in turn Tavros holds Gamzee close on his darker days and Tavros kisses his hands and brushes his hair out of his eyes and boops his nose and they laugh so hard together that they cry.

too much, entirely too much. its hypersaturated and overbearing in a way that makes you really sick of its taste after a while. i said time and again that i dont like kitchen sink settigs and this is in many ways the ultimate kitchen sink, its the multiverse but like even multier, and verser.

in many ways this is not so much about telling a story with a plot but rather in constructing a league of extraordinary gentlemen-like setting and exploring a 0,0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of it while making it clear how many zeroes there are in front of the one we just got a glimpse at.

also it commits the classic sin of trying to be too clever for its own good, i like meta like everyone else in my stories, and clever post modern self references and hypertextualities and winks to the audience are all fun and cute but after a while it just, it becomes a horse being beaten to the ground. we get it, no, seriously we did truly get it, how cute, much clever, very wow, and i get that this is obviously what the characters would do and think if they are clever, i get you are in a sense trying to anticipate all the weird and clever ideas a reader of your story could come up with to one-up your setting, i get you want to turn this into an arms race of perpetual escalation where you get to be hyper ultra super duper mega meta times infinity squared by infinity to the infinity power plus one.

we get it.

it stops being interesting after a while.

also, and this is mainly because the story is in a forum quest format and there is nothing to be done about that, it has severe pacing issues. much like the setting and much like the meta techniques, the story itself just goes on for way too long, i was ready to wrap it up when we got to the scene where starry kidnaps copper swallow and they have that orgy in the park. that felt like a natural (heh) climax for the thing. the story kept going.

so then other things happened and then finally that giant quest ended.

and then, and then, and then....

it really feels like a shameless bold faced insult to end this with a scene from act 7 of homestuck, less like a funny reference and more of a “yeah, i did that, i made you go through something like that, again, did you have fun?”

and the sad, sad, sad answer is that yeah, actually, i did.

here comes the turn around, for all that i griped and all the things i just said, the erogamer is well written. it was written by someone who is good at writing.

each individual scene, each chapter, each self contained portion of narrative is incredibly gripping, funny, entertaining, moving, tugs at your heartstrings, the characters feel so so alive and so likeable and well drawn. each portion of the whole is an absolute treat. here we have someone who wanted to write five hundred different stories and would have been amazing at writing each of them but they decided to cram them all awkwardly in one place.

all this is the product of an amateur writer tackling their very first serious large scale project, the need to cram everything in one place,the awkward pacing, the complete lack of focus, the odd bits and ends uncomfortably sticking out, the painfully first draft nature of it all. there is great potential here, im sure if they sat down and decided to actually write a single tight novel from beggining to end and polished it you would get a best seller in your hands, amazing potential that is begging to be channeled into a more sane project.

this is a case where the whole is much much less than the sum of its parts. and for all the contortions it does to suggest some deeper metaphisical framework where it all makes sense ultimatly its handwaved by the sheer power of nonesense, because the author just fucking said so. never before have i seen an author dedicate so many words and so much effort to make you think really really hard about how you shouldnt think too much about it. to the point that it almost feels like insecurity. i get it, ultimatly none of this is meant to make actual sense, making sense of it all is not the actual point of this all, i got it the first time you said it and i got it the five hundredth time you said it, now show me a scene where the main character gets fucked in the ass while sucking someone’s dick please.

finally, the porn.

yeah, its pretty good fucking porn. no complaint there, i cannot get randomly hard any more thanks to hrt and i still got multiple boners reading this story, so yeah. it did its job, top notch, cheffs kiss. it made me discover a couple of fetishes i was not aware i had, good job!

i have some more words on the matter but ill try to trickle them down later, if there is anything i learned out of this story is to not overstay your welcome.

ultimatly my final word on it is, do go and read it, there are so many portions that im sure you will absolutely love to read, is incredibly good fun, it has some parts that are honestly amazing and i frankly am glad i did it.

Honestly, Tumblr Batman. I know it's not a 'real' source, but it's my favorite Batman ever.

But I think I prefer video games as a general source text. I like that you can unlock lore and whatnot by exploring and paying attention, by eavesdropping on little side character conversations and finding obscure items with interesting descriptions.

That's how I know the dredgers believe in reincarnation, despite not having souls, and that apparently a dredger's natural state is to be rotting.

Omg so many. Homestuck, Steven Universe, Owl House to name a few. The ones I've actually gotten into were What We Do In The Shadows and Spy x Family.

My random thing got The Thunder Rolls by Garth Brooks, but the nearest I could get any vibes for was Devos with that one, even though that doesn't make much sense? I mean, she did feel betrayed by the Archon, though it wasn't in a romantic way, and in the 3rd verse (which is surprisingly hard to find on youtube), the wife commits murder, which Devos very much tried to do, so. Also, I like associating Devos with thunder.

V - Which character do you relate to most?

I've made joke posts, but Adrestes having to be told to go have fun and being a bit of a serious stick in the mud is Very Relatable™

Also Pelagos wanting to do things right and progress, but still fucking stuff up, but also being capable in his own way--something that others don't necessarily see--is something I can relate to a LOT.

And then there's Cullen Rutherford from DA. Him knowing he needs to deal with his trauma and wanting to do better, despite not being quite there really meant a lot to me, especially when DAI came out, because I was at that point in my own trauma, wanting to be better but not quite knowing how to get past the fears.

when are people going to realize that publicly liking/sharing ship content for a story someone likes doesn't mean that's the only thing they got out of it? do you think that if someone doesn't post about something in particular, they just don't know or care about it? do you think that if someone doesn't blog about something it disappears like you're a child with no object permanence?

i like homestuck. i found the themes interesting and the plot and story beats fascinating, and i could probably make a lot of posts analyzing some of it. but also. sometimes i like seeing posts and cute art about some of the homestuck guys in a romantic scenario, because the characters interest me and i just like that kind of content. i haven't forgotten about the story itself, mind you. i just like this one facet, enough so that if i see it on my dashboard, i tend to reblog it.

do you know what i do when i come across art of a ship i don't like, or media i don't like, or analyses i don't like? i either block a tag, or i don't look at it. you want to stop seeing an artist post about ships? block them. it's completely free. won't cost you a cent, and it has the added bonus of, in most cases, not being dickish to people. you curate your own social media experience. you have the ability and autonomy to look at things you want to see and ignore things you don't want to.

i'm making this post because i wanted to express my feelings on the matter. let's be real here. it doesn't matter what kind of excuse you make to make other people feel bad about enjoying ship content. it doesn't matter if you try to make it seem like it makes you a bad person. the act of shipping fictional characters, on its own, harms nobody. not a single soul. not a single living, breathing human being is harmed by it. it's a fun, silly little pastime that people do to get more enjoyment out of something they consume. so you should really just admit what the real purpose is of you trying to talk down to people just enjoying themselves in fandom. you feel entitled. you dislike shipping yourself, and prefer focusing on the themes of stories. but because you feel entitled, you think that what everyone else is doing is wrong, and they should stop doing it because of that.

if you like shipping, go for it! you like analyzing? fuck yeah! you like writing? making art? roleplaying? fucking go for it! media is for enjoyment. plain and simple. so, if you don't like any of those? i suggest you block tags and people as you see fit to make your social media experience as fun as you want it for yourself. stop acting like your way of consuming media is better than anyone else's way.
