🅱️oise, you've got to stop the "🅱️oise's Doise and Peddito takeover" or whatever!
"Why should I? Those suckers didn’t deserve a show! I’m on a roll expanding my lil’ old 🅱️usiness—🅱️Y USING THIS CHEESE DRAGON TO FLAME ALL MY COMPETITION AWAY! 🅱️OAGAGAGAGAG!"
—————————————————————
> As the aforementioned cheese dragon continued making the city go up in flames, Doise & his friends watched it all unfold—trying to figure out what to do.
"I suggest we look for its weak points; that way we’ll have an easier time defeating it."
"Every part of it looks like-a its-a weakpoint, how are-a we-a supposed to-a know which one is the-a weakest of them all?" "…Uhhh, just keep senselessly attacking it?" Doise-Chan: "Well, that would work, if only if it wasn’t made of cheese—our attacks against it might as well go through thin air!" Dorigin: "Looks like the writing has really gone bad now…"
> While all this arguing occurred, a familiar face slowly crept to them from behind. > Having a sign that showed a question mark on the top of their head, Doisey was the first one to notice the shadowy figure, turning around—instantly emitting mechanical and robotic sounds that were reminiscent of a scream; alerting the others along with it too.
"AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"—Pizzamancer?" Doise said, just as the group recovered from a sudden spook like that. "What the HELL do you want? Weren’t YOU working with that bastard over there in the hot air balloon?" Doisette then interjected, clearly angry at the pizza-faced sorcerer—obviously being in the right. Doise-Chan: "Wait, Pizzamancer was working with him?" Dorigin: "I thought that you already knew, Doise-Chan, since you did tell Doise that ‘it’s a long story’ after he asked what was going on." "Yeah, what’s up with that?" Doise-Chan: "…Well, I, er—" "NEVERMIND THAT NOW! Give-a us one-a GOOD reason why we-a shouldn’t beat you to a PULP." "Look, look, look—I only worked with him, because he knew a way to revive the dragon I had alongside me in the medieval ages!" "And what was that ‘way?’" Doisette said, being suspicious. "…Using the power of taunting in a ritual by repurposing Doise’s clones to do so." "So that’s why we felt so weak…" Both Doise and Dorigin said in unison, hearing about the truth now.
"Well, why couldn’t you just have asked Doise himself to see if he’ll let you use his clones?"
"I barely had any time to do so, since I was busy trying to hold the TV network that Doise owned together with RIDICULOUS ‘wacky hijinks’ happening almost EVERY day! Plus, he asks me to use my magic to do such nothing tasks and not anything else! I couldn’t bear to be with him any longer! But then he came… and promised me that I’ll get the respect I deserve, as long as I served under his rule. So I did." "…Isn’t he-a annoying as Doise-a is?" Doisette: "Peddito, again—NOT. THE. TIME." "He had tricked me by showing an interest in what I did; being my magic beyond the crust of human dreams. After all, he seemed to know more about ‘taunting’ more than I did, and he perfectly adjusted it just so that I would agree to his deal. Yes, he was indeed annoying at certain points, but he was otherwise more focused onto executing his own plan that he didn’t have the time to be annoying all the time in the first place. After the taunting done by the Doise clones now repurposed to look like him, the one thing I treasured the most was indeed revived as he had said—only for him to betray me by kicking a bomb towards me just as my cheese dragon flew off so that it couldn’t turn on him because he had turned on me first. Now he’s commanding them to whatever he wants! And I want revenge!" "Hell you are! After we’re done dealing with him and your cheese dragon, we’re dealing with you NEXT!" Doisette said, threatening Pizzamancer. "I know, I know, I KNOW! Do that, and I’ll fix everything; I swear on it! The only way to defeat my cheese dragon is to use brains against its brawn, as, admittedly, they aren’t very… smart in the least sense. Just don’t hurt them too bad—PLEASE!"
"…Alright, fine, but you need a good beating up too after all the shit you did. Peddito, you wanna do the honors?" As you could probably guess, it was Doisette saying this—again. "Of course." Peddito himself said, cracking his knuckles in the process. Seeing that there was nothing else left to agree to, Pizzamancer sighed a deep breath, both cautiously and dreadfully preparing for what was about to come. (At least, for him.) "…I suppose so. Let’s get it over withAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH—!"

Honolulu Urgent Care Centers: Your Go-To for Fast, Reliable Medical Care
Honolulu is not only a beautiful destination for locals and tourists alike but also a city that offers excellent healthcare services, including a wide network of urgent care centers. Whether you’re living in Honolulu or visiting, knowing where to find urgent care when you need quick medical attention can save you time, stress, and money. Urgent care centers in Honolulu provide immediate care for non-emergency conditions, making them the perfect alternative to costly emergency room visits.
What Makes Urgent Care in Honolulu the Best Choice?
Urgent care centers are designed to treat patients with conditions that require prompt attention but aren't serious enough for a hospital emergency room. If you’re dealing with a minor injury or sudden illness, urgent care centers provide convenient and affordable solutions. Here are a few reasons why Honolulu’s urgent care facilities are a great choice:
Extended Hours: Unlike primary care offices, many urgent care centers in Honolulu stay open late into the evening and are also available on weekends and holidays.
Walk-In Availability: You don’t need to book an appointment. Urgent care centers are designed for walk-ins, allowing patients to receive care as soon as they need it.
Cost-Effective: Urgent care visits are typically much more affordable compared to emergency room charges, making them a smart financial choice for non-life-threatening health concerns.
Quick Treatment: Most patients are treated and discharged within an hour, ensuring that you don’t spend long hours waiting, like in a busy ER.
Services Offered at Honolulu Urgent Care Centers
Honolulu’s urgent care clinics are equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment to handle a variety of health concerns. From diagnosing common illnesses to treating minor injuries, these centers provide comprehensive care. Some of the services offered include:
X-rays for fractures or sprains
Lab tests for infections
Treatment of minor wounds or burns
Vaccinations
Physical exams for work or school
With skilled medical professionals, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, Honolulu’s urgent care centers offer quality care for patients of all ages.
Top-Rated Urgent Care Centers in Honolulu
If you’re searching for trusted urgent care in Honolulu, here are a few highly recommended options:
Doctors of Waikiki: Situated in the bustling Waikiki area, this center provides fast and friendly care for both residents and tourists. Their extended hours and wide range of services make them one of the most accessible urgent care centers in Honolulu.
Urgent Care Hawaii: With several locations across the city, Urgent Care Hawaii offers efficient and high-quality services. Their team of healthcare professionals is dedicated to providing personalized care, ensuring patients receive the attention they need without the long wait times.
Hale Pawa‘a Clinic: Known for its welcoming environment and caring staff, Hale Pawa‘a Clinic is a trusted choice for urgent medical needs. The clinic provides quick, reliable services, including lab tests, minor injury treatment, and illness diagnosis.
Common Conditions Treated at Honolulu Urgent Care Centers
Urgent care centers in Honolulu treat a wide range of non-emergency conditions, including:
Colds, flu, and viral infections
Skin rashes or allergic reactions
Minor fractures, sprains, and dislocations
Cuts and wounds that may require stitches
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Ear infections or sore throats
Asthma and respiratory issues
Headaches and migraines
Additionally, many urgent care centers offer preventive services, such as flu shots, tetanus shots, and physical exams, making them a one-stop destination for general healthcare needs.
Urgent Care or Emergency Room: Which Should You Choose?
It’s important to understand when to visit an urgent care center versus when to go to the emergency room. Urgent care centers are great for non-life-threatening medical conditions that still require prompt attention. However, for serious conditions like severe chest pain, uncontrollable bleeding, difficulty breathing, or sudden loss of consciousness, the emergency room is the best choice.
Conclusion
Honolulu’s urgent care centers offer a valuable service, ensuring residents and visitors have access to quick, reliable healthcare without the high costs of emergency room visits. These centers provide comprehensive care for a variety of non-emergency conditions, from minor injuries to routine illnesses. Whether you’re a local in need of after-hours medical care or a visitor requiring immediate attention, Honolulu’s urgent care centers are here to provide fast and affordable healthcare.

I presume that by now everyone in the network of interested parties has seen this article, but it came back through my feeds again today, so here’s some content:
“Rich kids should go to public schools. The mayor should ride the subway to work. When wealthy people get sick, they should be sent to public hospitals. Business executives should have to stand in the same airport security lines as everyone else.
“The very fact that people want to buy their way out of all of these experiences points to the reason why they shouldn’t be able to.
“Private schools and private limos and private doctors and private security are all pressure release valves that eliminate the friction that would cause powerful people to call for all of these bad things to get better.
“The degree to which we allow the rich to insulate themselves from the unpleasant reality that others are forced to experience is directly related to how long that reality is allowed to stay unpleasant.
“When they are left with no other option, rich people will force improvement in public systems. Their public spirit will be infinitely less urgent when they are contemplating these things from afar than when they are sitting in a hot ER waiting room for six hours themselves.”
When I was a kid, this was fundamental, common knowledge — basic civics.
The Reagan came along and said, “Fuck that shit. This world is the property of capitalists. We’ll eat your soul and we’ll steal your kids, and if you don’t like it you can suck my dick!”
And the Boomers said, “Wow! Such Smart! Much Wise!”, and 50 years later, here we fucking are.
Thanks, Boomers. You spent your most productive years turning shared prosperity into a fascist dystopia. You truly are the worst generation of Americans in history.

Fox is looking to make a literal splash next Super Bowl Sunday, by slotting the freshman action drama Rescue: HI-Surf after the Big Game on Feb. 9, 2025.
As Fox has done with its recent Super Bowl lead-outs (Next Level Chef in 2023, The Masked Singer in 2020), rather than try to launch a brand-new show that night, Rescue: HI-Surf will have already debuted this fall, airing Mondays at 9/8c after 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5.
Filmed in O’ahu and hailing from prolific producer John Wells (The West Wing, ER) and EP/writer Matt Kester (Animal Kingdom), Rescue: HI-Surf follows the personal and professional lives of the heavy-water lifeguards who patrol and protect the North Shore of O’ahu, the most famous and dangerous stretch of coastline in the world. Each episode will follow the “dedicated, heroic and adrenaline-seeking first-responders” as they save lives in the difficult and often life-threatening conditions of Hawaii’s Seven Mile Miracle.
The series stars Robbie Magasiva (Wentworth), Arielle Kebbel (9-1-1), Adam Demos (Sex/Life), Kekoa Kekumano (Hawaii Five-0), Alex Aiono (Doogie Kameāloha M.D) and Zoe Cipres (Roswell, New Mexico), with Sea Shimooka (3 Body Problem), Shawn Hatosy (Animal Kingdom) and Ian Anthony Dale (Hawaii Five-0) appearing in recurring roles.
Asked about the decision to splurge on a Hawai’i-based series (which already has received a six-episode back order), Fox network president Michael Thorn told reporters on Monday morning, ahead of the network’s Upfront presentation to advertisers, “John [Wells] has a reputation for being one of the best producers in television, and specifically to do a show about heavy water lifeguards in Hawaii, the best way to do it is to shoot it on location.
“And it really speaks to our strategy — a programming strategy which is ‘get in business with the best people and take bold, creative swings, while still being able to build a business around these shows,'” Thorn continued. “And to have the opportunity to be in business with John and Matt [Kester], with something that stands out in the marketplace creatively, and being really smart about how you produce it on location…. We’ve been able to find a way to deliver really surprising visceral revenue, great character drama, but at the same time making something that’s responsible for today’s business.”

Stupid Innocuous Best Fave: I'm sure you've heard me shouting about this before, but a thing I really like about Renji is that he so obviously belongs somewhere on the jock - delinquent spectrum, except that he took AP Grim Reaper classes and he's got a *lot* of nerd friends, and he knows "traditional Gotei battle chants", and he writes an instructional sword-fighting column and also seems, just, more competent-at-his-job than most of the Gotei regulars. Also, he completely reverse-engineered Byakuya's entire combat deal, which is not nothing. It's like he's got a secret, precious lil smart-guy brain in there, but he's maybe a little embarrassed about it, so all his friends don't mention it, out of politeness.
Stupid Innocuous Best Fave
Renji got that Big 10 Energy--athletic scholarship, double major, business frat. (Not one of the ones that gets people killed via hazing-induced alcohol poisoning, but the ones where everyone's just real extraverted and get excited about meeting alumni they admire and networking. Definitely have a punny, dorky chant.) He also does intramural innertube water polo. That one kid who takes Environmental Studies 105 and is weirdly good at drawing birds (birds were not part of the assignment, but his submission came with them anyway).
Honestly, though, your 4th Division AU Renji reminds me a lot of my friend's husband, except I think Renji currently has a broader range of emotional intelligences than he does. (LOL sorry Friend's Husband--but in fairness, Renji has had a few more years to develop these, and they are some of Renji's best assets. I'm sure Mr. FH has other assets Renji does not!) But like, my friend's description of this guy many years before they were affianced was, "Man, I thought he was just another dirtbag climbing bro. I mean, he is a dirtbag climbing bro, but--" Mr. FH is also incredibly generous with his friends, insanely smart under his extremely jock clown exterior, and willing to be challenged in areas with room for improvement. This is only specific to 4th Division AU Renji because the guy is an ER doctor, LOL. I was at their wedding last month and one of the toasts was basically, "I cannot believe this man saves lives because he is a giant jock clown dork and I've only ever witnessed him being a dirtbag climber. But I would trust him to save my life in a heartbeat."
...Oh my god, I PROMISE I AM ONLY BLEACHBRAINING THEIR POOR, UNSUSPECTING WEDDING AFTER THE FACT I wasn't thinking about Renji during the ceremony. It's late, I need to go to bed, someone delete me off the Internet
BUT YES I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAY HERE ugh I love him!

Okay now tell me more about Nori. How did he and Dwalin met? How did they come to come past their differences? At what point did Nori's family learn of their relationship?
So, from Tolkien we know that Nori is the middle brother. The daddy Ri died when they were young. How I'm not sure. I don't really have a headcanon for it (shockingly). It was hard on their mom to be a single mother of three. She was out a lot working so Dori kind of ended up becoming mom at home, even more so when their mother got sick and died one winter. Dori's childhood ended that night and he became mom, dad, and big brother. He did his best so his brothers would have a childhood, but after watching his parents die, he became rather overbearing. It was this overbearing that caused Nori to start acting out. At first it was normal kid stuff like staying out past curfew, being a brat, etc. The crime came later.
Personally, I see Dori being willing to do anything to give his brothers a roof over their head and Ori an education since the little boy was so smart. And I mean just about anything. Nori found out about some of the stuff Dori did and just how tight their purse is the wrong way. He never told Dori what he saw. During his rebellion years, he learned to sneak quite well to get out of the house and also how to quietly filch things. While Dori never let his little brothers go hungry, Nori did have nights where he wasn't as full as he would like. He didn't see any harm in taking from the rich. Why should they have such easy lives and do so little to help the poor? So, when he realized how bad off they really were and how hard Dori worked to keep them afloat, he did the only thing he could think of: turn to a life of petty crime.
And with that and a lot of determination and motivation he became the best thief in Ered Luin. There isn't a safe or a house he can't break into. There isn't a pocket he can't pick. But, of course, stealing from the rich is going to raise some alarms. Dwalin was put on the case when absolutely no one could identify let alone find or catch the infamous thief. It helps that Nori learned how to be a master of disguise. You don't do your hair like that or have Dori as a brother without learning how to do amazing hair styles and ones that can alter face shape. Sure, he's been caught a few times but he always gets away and when he's caught in disguise no one is the wiser.
But Dwalin is a different animal when it comes to crime. He is stubborn and determined. Eventually, he starts putting together Nori's patterns, which are very erratic on purpose but even chaos has a pattern. And the supposedly uncatchable thief gets caught several times by Dwalin. Nori honestly enjoys the thrill of the chase and, I mean, he thinks Dwalin is pretty damn hot, so he allows this cat and mouse game to go on. He is absolutely in charge of the game.
Nori is the one who makes the first move. He starts flirting with Dwalin during chases or while he's in jail. The flirting winds Dwalin up. Finally, one time when Dwalin has Nori pinned to a wall after catching him (which Nori totally allowed) when Nori makes his move. Dwalin is so shocked Nori is able to get away. It happens again and again (all through Nori's planning). Dwalin is honestly confused both by Nori and his own reactions. He's always thought of himself as a ladies man. Zero problem with women, long string of exes. He never clicked with any of them enough to marry them, but he never considered trying to date men. So having physical (and emotional! not that he'll admit it) responses to Nori confuses the hell out of him.
Dwalin gives up on the idea of actually catching Nori. The catch and...release method is perfectly suitable for both of them. Until the quest for Erebor. Then things change. The two of them spend a lot more time with each other in the company of others. Until then both of them have only known the basics about the other. Dwalin knows less about Nori than Nori knows about him. Nori totally has spies everywhere. In the decades of being a thief, he set up a thief network that includes training newbies. It helps keep the thieves safe and helps lessen the chances of any turf wars. But they honestly don't know anything about each other. The quest actually allows them to get to know each other.
It's definitely Nori who reaches out first. Dwalin hasn't told anyone, anyone about what's been happening. At first it's really awkward but Nori is a smooth talker so he manages to keep things going when Dwalin turns to stone (he's freaking out inside). Nori helps Dwalin through his emotional confusion when Dwalin lets him. By the time they reach Erebor they have a very awkward and tentative relationship. The grief sex after The Battle of the Five Armies is amazing.
It isn't until after botfa that their families find out. I mean Dori suspected something and so did Balin but neither was about to confront their respective brother. Both know better than to do that. Honestly, for as sneaky as Nori is and as stoic as Dwalin is, they're kinda bad at hiding their budding relationship and sneaking off to shag. Though, it goes over Ori's head. Ori's like the last person to suspect anything (meaning he doesn't suspect anything until he's literally told by them). Even then, it's a while after botfa that they find out. Dwalin is, if anything, a man of honor and duty. He feels duty bound to help Dain reestablish the kingdom in the Lonely Mountain and it eats up a lot of his time. Nori doesn't mind since he's busy setting up a spy network (and a thieves guild because he knows thieving will still happen and he wants them to be safe). But when they do decide to tell their family, they get everyone together and tell it at once (money absolutely changes hands)

Technologies For a Better Future
Recent advancements in technology are having a noticeable impact on our daily lives, and I would like to share some that you should be aware of.
BRAIN MAPPING
Neuroscientists have worked for decades to better understand how the brain functions. Recent advances in brain mapping technology have made that ambitious task easier. An international team of researchers at the Human Brain Project have created a three dimensional atlas of the brain. The maps resolution is fifty times better than previous efforts. The atlas creators digitally stitched together thousands of brain cross-sections. The map shows details up to 20 micrometers in size—the estimated size of many human cells. While this is a huge advancement, scientists still aim to create a map that shows details at 1 or 2 micrometers, rather than 20.

ENERGY-PRODUCING ROADS
Roads could work as solar panels and produce electricity for street lights, households and even the cars driving on them. This bold vision led Solaroad to build the first energy-generating bike path.
Their main technology challenge was the top layer of the road: it had to let as much sunlight in as possible while remaining strong and damage resistant. A “SolaRoad Kit” lets you build 10m² of SolaRoad, which produces enough electricity to cover the yearly electricity needs of an average household.

5G networks
Telecommunications companies began rolling out 5G networks this year. 5G offers faster connectivity at lower latencies and lower power consumption. That means mobile connectivity is faster than most wired broadband in the U.S. I believe it will fuel innovation in the internet of things, smart homes, augmented reality, virtual reality, health care, media, cloud services and more, which will create tremendous business opportunities across many industries.
Source
Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality
The next exceptional technology trend - Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), and Extended Reality (ER). VR immerses the user in an environment while AR enhances their environment. Although this technology trend has primarily been used for gaming thus far, it has also been used for training, as with Virtual Ship, a simulation software used to train U.S. Navy, Army and Coast Guard ship captains.
In 2022, we can expect these forms of technologies being further integrated into our lives. Usually working in tandem with some of the other emerging technologies we’ve mentioned in this list, AR and VR have enormous potential in training, entertainment, education, marketing, and even rehabilitation after an injury. Either could be used to train doctors to do surgery, offer museum goers a deeper experience, enhance theme parks, or even enhance marketing, as with this Pepsi Max bus shelter.

3D printing
I think 3D printing will be a catalyst in American manufacturing. We can start making several small items like toys, logos, gift items and others using 3D printing in our houses. 3D printing makes it easier to make a prototype and test it, instead of spending several thousands of dollars to make a prototype. I see a future where retailers start doing 3D printing for consumers as well.

Sasha Lane always plays the rebel. “Somebody make me a f***ing fairy princess, please,” says the actor, sighing with exasperation. “I promise I won’t say f***.” She is the type of plucky young star you imagine can do anything but, until now, Lane has excelled at playing the daring renegade, whether it’s as a teenage runaway in American Honey, the dazzling coming-of-age film that made her name in 2016, as a spliff-smoking “bad kid” in The Miseducation of Cameron Post, or, this month, as a violent fugitive in Amazon Prime’s Utopia.
The 25-year-old puts these sorts of roles down to her 20 tattoos and her dreadlocks. “I’m immediately seen as dirty and dark,” she says, recalling when she attended the illustrious Met Gala event in 2018, wearing a white lace dress. “I had diamonds in my hair – diamonds,” she says, with faux indignation. “Somebody was like, ‘She's so grungy.’ I was like, ‘What about this outfit says: ‘I'm gonna do a head bang and burn a town down?’ No. I'm sipping with my pinkie up and feeling very graceful and I wish you would just let me have my moment.”
Lane is just as captivating to watch on Zoom as she is in her films. She plays with her distinctive dreads – piling them atop her head, sweeping them over her shoulder – and her hands spiral around each other as she talks in a rhythmic southern drawl. When we speak, Lane has just got off a video call with her one-year-old daughter. She's currently in Atlanta, where she’s rumoured to be shooting the new Thor-spin off series, Loki, with Tom Hiddleston. “I'm just gonna skip over that one,” she says, laughing, when asked about it.
No one could have foreseen that Lane would end up here, though she is easily one of the most intriguing actors of the moment. She’d never planned on acting, let alone liked it, and thought she’d join the Peace Corps after college. But in 2014 her life changed forever when, aged 19, she was spotted on a Miami beach by Andrea Arnold. The director had just lost her lead actor for American Honey, the dizzying, sun-soaked Cannes Jury Prize-winner about a girl who decides to cut and run with a band of misfits. Among the tens of thousands of students getting wasted on spring break, Lane stood out.
“It was a crazy trip,” says Lane. “Me and my friends had been kicked out of a hotel and we ended up on this beach. I had no care in the world and that's when Andrea saw me.” Arnold told Lane she was making a film and later that night, while two of her friends were passed out from partying on her hotel bed, Lane improvised scenes in the lobby. “I had definitely been drinking that day, but I can hold my own,” she says now.
The next day over breakfast, Arnold asked Lane to stick around for another week. Lane was cautious. “I was like, ‘Alright, well if you turn out to be a murderer this is not gonna go well for you. I know s***. You're gonna have to really hack up my body if we're gonna do this.’ Which is weird to say to someone, but I did,” says Lane. She stayed, and by the end of the week she’d been cast in the film opposite Shia LaBeouf. She dropped out of college and flew out to Oklahoma to start shooting.
Her resulting performance as Star, a teenager from a broken home who hits the road with a travelling, partying sales crew in the midwest, was magnetic. With no professional experience, Lane managed to delicately balance her character’s mixture of vulnerability and grit.
Lane, like Star, left her life behind to go on the road with the film’s cast and crew. “I didn't know how to act,” she says. “So I didn't know what to do other than pull stuff from my own mind. I got to the point where I’d be crying to Andrea, saying, ‘I can't tell the difference between who I am and who Star is.’ We were in a bubble and had no visitors. We slept in s****y motels together, we were in the van for hours. There was no escaping American Honey.”
Star’s love interest in the film is the crew’s wild, hyperactive “business manager” Jake, a rat-tailed LaBeouf who Lane was reportedly dating off-screen. LaBeouf was intense on set. In one instance, Star was supposed to be angry with Jake, but Lane was struggling to conjure the emotion. “I was just laughing,” she says. “So Shia started telling me, ‘You're ruining this scene. You're f***ing ruining the whole movie.’ I knew what he was doing but it hurt and it was pissing me off. I just snapped and then they started filming and it was like, ‘Oh right, I see what you did there. You f***er.’ It was smart.”
The kids in the film, who are from forgotten, midwestern towns, are in a demographic that Donald Trump claims to be the voice of. Our interview is a week ahead of the 2020 election, and Lane is not convinced. “He's had his time and he has nothing to show for it,” she says. “He didn't deliver. I understood, especially back then, why certain people voted for him. They just wanted to believe that he would put money in and give us jobs, but it didn't work out that way.”
Like Star, Houston-born Lane moved around a lot as a child, between Texas, Florida and Dallas, and helped raise her little sisters. “I don't really like to talk about my family but my mom was gone a lot,” she says. “I played this role of being the glue, trying to keep everyone together. I grew up really, really young. Bad things happened to me as a kid but I had this feeling that it made me a better person. I have empathy and perspective.” As a result, she continues, she “internalised a lot because I never wanted people to feel my pain. I wanted to appear strong and light and be able to take care of everyone. Meanwhile, I would sit in my closet, give myself like 10 seconds to cry, then I would suck it up and be like, ‘OK, move forward, time to go get my sisters some food and act like everything's OK.’ I got really good at pretending things were OK.”
When Lane went to college, she started to crack. “I ended up getting diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder,” she says. “There are voices in your head, things are really dark. It's hard to explain to people who care about you that you can't sleep and you're hearing voices all day and you're sad and you're just tired. By the time I was a teenager, I was so tired.”
In the weeks before Lane met Arnold in 2014, the voices were “saying something nice for the first time”. “They told me, ‘Hold on, something’s coming that will allow you to fill your purpose and let you breathe,’” she says. “People ask me all the time, ‘If American Honey didn't happen, what would you be doing?’ Truly, I don't think I'd be here. I think it saved my life.”
There is a serendipity to Lane’s acting career. First, American Honey came out of the blue. Then, in 2018, she starred in Desiree Akhavan’s gay conversion drama The Miseducation of Cameron Post as a girl raised in a hippy commune. The part resonated with Lane as someone who refuses to put a label on her sexuality and whose brother had a difficult time growing up gay and black in Houston. “I've never seen myself as someone who's like, ‘Hey, I'm queer, I'm bisexual, I'm this,’” says Lane. “I just have a very broad and open and unique way of loving. I can literally fall in love with a f***ing squirrel. Anyone.”
Her brother, she says, “always prayed he’d be normal”, much like the characters in Cameron Post try to “pray away the gay”. She says the film moved some elderly conservative viewers to tears and has helped to change people’s minds.
After that, Lane landed roles in the warm indie drama Hearts Beat Loud and the horror Daniel Isn’t Real, and her latest project is the US remake of Dennis Kelly’s Utopia, about a gang of bright youngsters who are in possession of a cult graphic novel that seems to predict disastrous real-world epidemics, making them the target of a shadowy deep state organisation. Lane plays yet another woman on the run, Jessica Hyde, who has been evading The Network all her life and who helps the young group survive.
Lane studied feral cats to get into the character’s mindset. “For them, everything is survival mode,” she says. “You're terrified someone's gonna capture you. You don't hang in packs because you're a loner. That's Jessica Hyde.”
She may be stuck playing the rebel but, through playing misunderstood outliers like Jessica Hyde and Star, Lane wants her work to bring people together and help us to understand each other. “I’m not the biggest public speaker,” she says, “but if I can make films that touch hearts and connect people, that's beautiful. Of course I want to be a part of that.”

The Investment [Part Two] & [Ratfox]
In which, after a meeting at InterPride, and after some encouragement from Tiana, Vixey reaches out to another investor...[takes place: late June, 2021]
@professorofcrimeratigan
[tw -- some scheming on ratigan’s part]
VIXEY: It had been her contact at InterPride that pointed her in the direction of Pedram Ratigan. She had never heard of him before, which was both worse and better. At least with Seamus, there had been some familiarity there. He knew her parents, and she supposed that had helped him agree--when he had been a bit skeptical. (Which, honestly, fair, in her opinion.) However, that familiarity also meant there was more pressure, because if he said no, it would not have reflected poorly just on Vixey, but on her parents as well. And that wasn’t acceptable.
Mr. Ratigan didn’t know her at all. They were a blank slate to one another. It meant she had much more to prove, but there were also fewer expectations. Due to this, she had chosen Tiana’s place and a proper dinner reservation to wine and dine the man.
He was led to her table by the redheaded hostess, whom Vixey thanked as she stood and offered her hand to the man.
“Mr. Ratigan, I presume? I’m Vixey Chakraborty. It’s nice to meet you. Thank you so much for agreeing to meet with me. I know you’re a busy man.” [outfit]
RATIGAN: An invitation to dinner had been extended to him.
This would not have been such a surprise had it been from someone he actually spent time with, such as a co-worker or Mrs. Robinson, but for it to come from a complete stranger had been a bit of a red flag. Always erring on the side of caution (paranoia) he looked her up. He would have done it regardless, but still. In his line of work one could never be too careful. Her last name had seemed familiar but it wasn’t until he had gotten the results back that he understood where from— her family owned a farm nearby.
Why someone like her would want to entertain someone like him was a bit of a mystery but that worked in Ms. (or did she still go by Mrs.?) Chakraborty’s favor. It made him more willing to go, just to see what would happen.
He smiled to the hostess and kept it as he took the woman’s hand. Polite. Formal— thankfully not here for any social reason. Business then.
Ratigan waved his other hand, eyebrows furrowing slightly. “Even academics need to get out and see the sun every now and again. I should be thanking you for the excuse to.” He gestured to her seat, unbuttoning his suit’s jacket before he took his own. “So, what can I do for you, Ms. Chakraborty?”
VIXEY: Vixey’s heart was beating very fast as she shook Mr. Ratigan’s hand. She had never done something like this before and she found it extremely intimidating. Googling “how to ask someone for an investment” didn’t really yield the results she’d wanted. She had spoken with Jun a bit, and obviously had convinced Seamus, but Mr. Ratigan was a proper businessman. Not a family friend she was basically asking a very large favor of.
When he gestured, Vixey took her seat again, glad he’d indicated for it--otherwise, she probably would’ve remained awkwardly standing for a few seconds too long. Her leg started bouncing under the table. She hoped he wouldn’t notice...or, she would, if she had even noticed she was doing it.
“Right, well, I believe I mentioned in my email that I was looking for support for my business venture.” Vixey didn’t believe this, she knew it. She had stared at the email several times, had Jun read over it, had her parents read over it, had Tiana and Barbie read over it.
“I am looking to--open a thrift shoppe on Main Street.” She said it all in one big breath and then smiled, nervous and sheepish, but also--a bit exhilarated.
RATIGAN: Well. That was rather a let down— but what had he expected? A part of him settled back now that he knew this was just a small, mundane matter.
Tiana’s Place had been a good investment. The woman had done everything in her power to ensure its success, as he knew she would, and he hadn’t needed to do anything but keep her books. All the while he had his own business running within it and should anyone (though he very much doubted anyone would) find the threads of it they would be led back to Ms. Truitt.
It had been nice having something so close to home. Sometimes running a network from the telephone could get exhausting, especially when working with some of the dimmest people the criminal world had to offer.
If he could do that again, he figured, why not? Ms. Chakroborty did not seem to have the spine Ms. Truitt possessed, which made this all the more enticing.
“That’s a smart venture. Ever since the last clothing shoppe closed I am sure everyone has been waiting for someone to save them from having to travel elsewhere.” He smiled. “How can I be of help to you?”
VIXEY: Vixey let out a little breath when he didn’t immediately get up and walk away. She had been half expecting it. She had no idea how to negotiate a business deal. This wasn’t what she’d gone to school for. It wasn’t something she had ever thought she would need skills in. Maybe it was easier than she thought it was going to be…
“I’m glad you think so,” Vixey gushed, meaning it truly. If he had thought the shoppe a bad idea and ended things right there well...months of Vixey’s work would have gone to waste. That was the last thing she wanted now that she had come this far. Vixey had already, possibly, wasted months of her life getting a degree in nursing, just to turn her back on that profession the moment her life got hard. If this fell through too, she would feel truly lost.
She didn’t know how upfront she should be. Asking for money felt like such an intimate conversation.
“Well, I was--pointed in your direction by a few contacts of mine.” There, that felt professional. Even if those contacts had just been Tiana and Simba. “They told me that you--are interested in investing in small businesses around Swynlake.” That wasn’t asking for money, she supposed. At least, not outright.
“I, uh, I have all my business plans and such here.” She pushed the bulky folder towards him. “With budgets and design ideas, marketing plans...that sort of thing.”
RATIGAN: Despite her avoiding the word completely he knew what this was leading up to. (It was all anything ever led up to these days, wasn’t it?) Ratigan admired her wish to skirt around the question, seemingly waiting for the right moment or signs from him saying that she could go ahead and ask for the money she was looking for.
He leaned forward to retrieve the folder, holding the spine of it against an open hand while the other was allowed to flip through its pages. This he could admire, most people would have told him they sent him something on his email he could open or present him with their laptop to scroll through, but a physical copy held weight— showed effort.
Of course he did not actually care about this clothing store and whether or not it would benefit him. Either way he would walk out of this unscathed, even if it did fail, both monetarily and in reputation.
He was more interested to know who she was and if he would be able slip things under her nose without notice, just as he had Ms. Truitt.
“Well done. It seems you have a clear vision and goal in mind.” He glanced up, but returned to the pages in front of as he asked again, “Clearly you’re in no need of advice so, what is it I can do for you?”
VIXEY: Was that clear?
It didn’t feel clear to Vixey. In fact, she needed all the advice and help she could get. She still felt horrifically out of her element. Vixey hadn’t ever wanted to open a business. She had gone to school to be a nurse and get bossed around by other people! She didn’t know how to be a boss and run a business. The idea was incredibly daunting.
There were so many questions she wanted to ask: how do you hire people? How do you fire them? How do you budget how much they should be paid? How do you get stock for something like a thrift store? What kind of insurance was best? Of course, these were all things she could read online or in books and she had but—
Asking a genuine businessman was preferable and she couldn’t bother Jun for all of it. She’d feel horrible, using him like that when he’d already helped her so much.
But, as much as Vixey wanted to open her mouth and let all these anxieties pour out of her, she knew she couldn’t. Ratigan was not the person to ask. She needed to project confidence. Poise. He wouldn’t want to invest if he didn’t think she believed she could do it. Vixey wouldn’t blame him.
So, instead, she just smiled and fiddled with her fork.
“Thank you, that’s very kind of you to say. Uhm, I am currently shopping around for investors.” Asking for money was not natural for anyone and certainly not Vixey. She had worked hard, her whole life, but it was her father who reminded her that he had started out that exact way. Moving to a brand new country and starting a farm. He had relied on investors and community members to help him through those first years. And then he had even given her the first loan—it was a modest thousand dollars, but Vixey was already anxious to pay him back.
“If you—flip to the budgeting tab, you’ll see I’ve worked out my first year of finances. I’ve already got enough to pay for most the rent from another investor. But, obviously, there is still a deficit in the budget.”
About 20,000 pounds, but saying that out loud was intimidating.
RATIGAN: No, it wasn’t, but if he was going to get this show on the road before the restaurant called closing time then he figured it best to attempt boosting her confidence level. If she thought he thought she was competent then it may be enough to get her say what she meant.
Other investors. Ratigan wished he could roll his eyes. Honestly, he should have prepared for that given this woman’s financial situation and seeming polite sensibilities. She wouldn’t want to up and ask a stranger for all of what she was looking for. It seemed to be like pulling teeth even now since she wouldn’t just come out and say exactly what she needed from him.
Multiple people being involved would be rather annoying. More eyes on the books meant less of a chance he would be able to do much of anything. Especially if they were all going in evenly and no one had more say over the other— except if she knew them personally, then she would value their opinion above all else since this was a small town and relationships always seemed to win out in the end. Unless it was the right person at the helm and a nudge in the right direction could persuade them to listen to reason rather than their social obligations.
“I see.” He wished he could shut the book, tell her he wasn’t interested, and not have to deal with the, no doubt, ridiculous people she’d already gotten involved. Unfortunately, she was friends with Ms. Truitt and, not wanting to jeopardize what he did have, Ratigan knew he would have to hear her out. “And may I ask why you think I’d be a good fit for you?”
VIXEY: The truthful answer to Mr. Ratigan’s question was simple: because he had the money.
Obviously, Vixey couldn’t say that. She felt a bit bad even thinking it. It was true, however. She didn’t know Mr. Ratigan, he had no personal reason to invest. They both knew this. It made Vixey feel horribly uncomfortable. Doubting herself once again. She wasn’t as bold as Tiana nor as level-headed as Jun. Maybe she wasn’t cut out to be a business owner after all. But, she had already sunk so much time into this.
She had a plan.
So, after a brief pause—thankfully there was food she could shove her face with in the meantime (made sense to her now why so many people did business over dinner)—she swallowed and cleared her throat.
“You have a lot of experience with business. Tiana told me about some of your other ventures. And while I have done a lot of reading and learning, I know that there is still much more I could learn. I found you appealing because of that. And you’ve already invested in Swynlake, so I thought you might be open to it and that it was worth a try.” She tried for a winning, confident smile.
RATIGAN: Usually Ratigan was a big fan of games like this. Someone coming to him in need and not wanting to say it out right for one reason or another. It would amuse him to no end watching the other person squirm or bristle until eventually something gave and they finally admitted defeat. Here it was all just so— boring. They were discussing something of no consequence. (To him, anyway, which was all he cared about.)
But, again, what had he really expected?
He went through the motions, making sure his microexpressions were accurate to what she was saying to him. Sheepish flattery at the compliments, nodding as she shared her thought process, and rubbing a hand at his cheek as he pretended to think it over. He already had. There was no harm to him whether he gave her the money or not. If she failed then it was what it was, he lost nothing. If she succeeded then very well, he would have helped another person in this town gain a business. Either way his reputation remained. It was only if he didn’t invest that he may stand to lose something.
“Are you simply seeking a loan from me? Or am I to have some sort of stake in this venture as well?”
VIXEY: “Oh, well--” Vixey was rather taken aback by how blunt Mr. Ratigan was being, but perhaps this was how it worked in business. Vixey surely wouldn’t know. It made sense, she supposed, that someone who was sinking money into something wanted to make sure that it survived to see a return investment. Vixey wouldn’t blame them. It was a very practical thing to do.
She smiled, a bit uncomfortably, though she managed to swallow it down and smile brighter.
“My original plan was just for the investment, but I would be happy to hear if you wanted to be more firmly involved. I’ll admit that all of this is rather new to me, so I would, at the very least, appreciate any advice. I’m sure you--when--if you’d like to invest--want to make sure it succeeds as well. I’d be all ears. Truly. And very grateful.”
RATIGAN: He chuckled, sitting forward now. “Well, in that case, my first piece of advice for you is to not admit to such naivety. When dealing with money people tend to become less than sensitive to the well-fare of others and more inclined to focus on themselves. Even if you’re working with friends and family— perhaps more so since they think those are the people that will be more willing to forgive them for their actions.”
After all, where would he be if not for the sins of man?
“If it’s advice you seek then I will give you the same deal I offered to Ms. Truitt. Where she wanted to learn how to keep her books, I could help teach you how to run a business. Whether that be marketing, management, accounting, or financing. You’re asking for—” Ratigan glanced down to the binder. “10,000? If you give me 10% ownership then I can provide that, my personal experience, and should anything else come up, and it will as that is the way of life, then you can always come back to me for whatever else it is that you need.”
VIXEY: Oh, that--well, that actually sounded really good.
It took some of the pressure off Vixey, as there would be someone who actually knew what they were doing at the helm. And the way he spoke, it was obvious that he had a lot of experience. Something which she sorely lacked.
However, Vixey wasn’t one to make any split second decisions. This was something she would have to talk over with her father. And probably Jun. And also Tiana. She needed to collect all the evidence and organize it, then make a decision when she was ready. 10% ownership was a big deal, even if it sounded relatively small. They would have to set up guidelines for how much say he would have and what that would look like moving forward.
Her brain started whirring as she considered all of these options.
“Thank you, Mr. Ratigan. That is extremely generous. Much more than I would have hoped for.” It was, also, she realized, very business savvy, because it meant he would get a say in his investment. A higher guarantee of a bit of profit, or, at the very least, breaking even.
“I will have to consider it, but why don’t you send over a contract for me to read? If your firm has one on hand, otherwise, we could design one together, though that might take a bit longer. I can--get my answer to you in a few weeks? I am hoping to have my petition submitted to the board by the end of July and the shoppe opened by September at the latest, so it would certainly be before that.”
RATIGAN: Good, he had been anticipating that answer. As naive as this woman was she did have some sort of sense about her. He would have been more concerned had she simply jumped at the offer and agreed to it straight away if only because he did not want to deal with someone so ridiculous. They could be entertaining, like how the court kept a jester, but those sorts of people were not to be kept around and given a direct line of contact. So long as she remained competent this whole ordeal would be tolerable.
“That’s alright. I can have one drawn up and sent to you in no less than two days' time. I’ll use the email you’ve contacted me with in case they need any additional information.” It would take less time for him since the law firm worked for him (under a different identity), but in the interest of appearing relatively normal he would give it a few days. Just enough to let it breathe but not too long to allow the deal to be lost in the weeds of the rest of her planning.
“And please, take your time. If there is anything I have learned in my days it’s that it is better to be sure of yourself and your decisions than rush into something and be left with regret.” Ratigan smiled, closing the binder and handing it back over to her. “If there is anything else I can do for you in the meantime, please, don’t hesitate to ask. Now or in the future.”
VIXEY: This all sounded good to Vixey. Almost too good. But, that was Swynlake for you. Close knit communities allowed for a kind of opportunity Vixey had not seen before. As a girl, she had wanted the opportunities of the whole wide world! All the things that it had to offer. Now, though, she appreciated the opportunity of connections, more than she ever thought she would.
It was nice to feel as if she had a place to land softly, where her grief could be a gentle thing she carried with her. And that she did not have to explain herself. Everyone understood, because they knew her and her family and had heard, one way or another. She had thought that kind of gossip would bother her. It had at the hospital. Somehow, it was easier here. Vixey didn’t feel…judged or pitied. And she had made friends easily, sliding back into routines she had once hated for their simplicity and now cherished for the very same reason.
“Thank you so much. Your offer really means a lot. I will definitely keep that in mind.” And probably write up a list of questions, fret about sending it, then send it anyway.
“For now, let’s just leave it at that. I don’t want to take up any more of your time.”
