“And what would happen then?”
“I suppose then we would have to turn into giants, wouldn’t we?”
“Giants. Really?” Melanie deadpanned as if she hadn’t just unraveled the most incoherent line of questioning you’d ever heard. Her new favorite game was “what if,” and you were apparently awful at it.
“Well—” you began, pretending to think as you leaned against the counter and tapped your chin. “I guess we could just learn how to fly instead. That way we could go collect the, um… bunnies from the tops of the clouds.”
“It’s cats, mommy, not bunnies. Why would a bunny be on a cloud?”
“You are so right.”
You pushed off the counter and continued restocking the shelves of the small apothecary that had employed you for the past few years. You had started out in Velaris working at a few small bars, but that hadn’t lasted long when they discovered you were pregnant. You had earned enough money to get a small apartment at that point, and you just so happened to find one above an apothecary owned by a rather wicked old woman.
Lucky for you, she was a wicked old woman who no longer wanted to run her apothecary or deal with the space above it. So, you got a job and a place to live without many questions asked—a two-for-one miracle.
“Maybe we could ask Nyx to take us up to the clouds,” Melanie pondered as she fiddled with a bundle of cloves by the register.
“Who’s Nyx, sweetie?” you mindlessly asked.
“A boy in my class. He has wings. He told me he can’t fly very high yet, but soon he’ll be able to.”
You inhaled sharply through your nose.
There were probably several boys in her class who had wings and were unrelated to the Illyrian man occupying your thoughts, right?
You hummed in contemplation. “I don’t know, Melanie. Maybe Nyx could take you, but I might be too big for him to bring me up to the clouds.”
“Oh, good idea, mommy! Nyx’s daddy can fly too and he can bring you. Or he has two uncles that could.” Your daughter stuck two fingers in the air with pride. “I wish I had wings. Mommy, did my daddy have wings?”
You shook your head and abandoned the box at your feet to brush your daughter’s hair back instead. Going to school had opened doors to many questions you had been dreading, and Melanie’s questions about her dad had been coming in waves.
“Your daddy didn’t have wings,” you began, looping a finger around her red curls. “But he did have hair just like yours.”
Melanie tilted her head to the side. “Did you love my daddy? Nyx drew a picture at school of his mommy and daddy and said they love each other very much. Like as much as you love me.”
You fought back a sigh. Nyx was causing you a plethora of issues and you hadn’t even met the kid. “Sometimes families look different,” you explained, running your hands down to brush off the dust on Melanie’s clothes that she’d surely obtained from playing in the apothecary. “I didn’t love your daddy, but that’s just because I had so much love saved up for you.”
“Hmm…I hope you can have someone to love like how Nyx’s mommy has his daddy,” Melanie said after a small pause. And then she swung off the counter and started trekking up the stairs to the apartment as if she hadn’t just aged ten years with her statement.
You blinked at the space she left, baffled by your five-year-old’s abruptness. She had only been at school for a week and was making revelations about your life that even you struggled to come to terms with. You let out a small sound of disbelief and made to follow your daughter up the stairs when the bell above the front door chimed.
“Sorry, we’re closed for the—”
A boot heel clicking silenced your call.
His shadows came in before him, dark swirls instantly sweeping along the walls and wrapping up around the front counter. They didn’t touch you, but there was a hesitance about them that suggested they wanted to. You tore your gaze from their behavior to meet the eyes of the Illyrian from the school—the one you hadn’t seen since and definitely not because you were avoiding all situations where he could spot you.
“Hello,” Azriel greeted with a calmness that was not reciprocated. “Are you closed? I can come back another time.”
Every thought tumbled out of your brain. You had forgotten—almost—how intimidating he was. Not just in sheer size, but in the way he held himself, in the sharp planes of his face that smoothed into softness in the exact places they should.
His wings pressed in towards his back as he took another step forward. The floor groaned beneath his weight.
“Oh, um—” you uttered along with the straining floor. “We are—technically. But I can help you find something. Or place an order for you. No big deal.”
“I wouldn’t want to keep you if you’re closed,” Azriel stressed.
“No, no, it’s okay,” you nervously laughed. Act more normal. Act like there’s nothing… abnormal about you. “Anything for someone from Melanie’s school. What are you looking for?”
Azriel hummed, his eyes lightning. “Ah, so you do remember me. I was wondering.”
Was he looking at you strangely? Azriel kept trailing his gaze around the room and letting it land on your face, evaluating you… profiling you?
You were being ridiculous.
“Of course I do. You gave me great intel on the teacher. I don’t come until the bell rings now.” You rocked back on your heels and shifted your fidgeting hands behind your back. “Was there something specific I could help you with?”
Azriel ignored your question for the second time. “Is that why I haven’t seen you? You come later?”
Was he looking for you?
A strange combination of excitement and trepidation made your stomach drop.
Another nervous laugh. Your palms were sweating. “I guess so. There’s a lot to be done here so I usually wait until the last minute to close up shop and pick her up. That’s why your tip was so helpful.”
Azriel narrowed his eyes in a way that echoed concern, but you refused to read into it. You balanced up onto your toes and fell back onto the soles of your feet.
You could tell he wanted to say more about something—to ask more questions unrelated to the apothecary. But he stopped himself and the restraint was clear in the tenseness of his shoulders.
“I get headaches,” Azriel shared. “Awful ones. I’ve tried healing magic and a few medicinal remedies, but I was hoping to find something herbal. Could you help me with that?”
You breathed a sigh of relief and began rifling through a cabinet to your left. “I may have just the thing. I had terrible migraines when I was pregnant and it took me six tries to get this recipe perfect, but I think it would do the trick for you. I almost hate to share it because I was the one that had to suffer through all the bad batches, but I guess that’s kind of my job.”
You pulled back from the cabinet with a small bottle in hand, a tiny rendition of your handwriting scrawled along the side. You rolled it in your hands for a moment until you saw the shimmering nature of the liquid inside, and then you held it out over the counter and offered Azriel a smile. He replicated it, but it was smaller and looked forced.
“You didn’t have anyone else to try it out on?” he asked.
The question twisted something deep within your chest, but you only grinned and ignored the tightness of your jaw. “Who better than the one with the migraines herself?”
Azriel breathed a laugh through his nose, his eyes not leaving yours. “I suppose that’s true.”
The flecks in his eyes had you paralyzed, unable to move as his gaze held yours. You were breathless, fist tightening around the small tonic still held out in front of you as Azriel reached forward and grabbed it. His skin brushed yours. You shivered.
Azriel’s lips parted to speak. “Where are you—”
A loud thump from upstairs cut him off.
Azriel started, his chin clipping up and his body tensing. He quickly looked back down to you with a panicked question in his eyes.
You fought for the words to say. If you revealed it was only Melanie, he would know where you lived—another piece of information you liked to keep close. But if you didn’t tell him, that could lead to something worse. He looked about ready to bolt up the stairs and battle your five-year-old.
The decision was made for you when Melanie came bounding down the steps with a bowl in one hand and a large wooden spoon in the other.
“Mommy,” she began with a lax posture that did not match the room. “Can I—Oh, hi, Mr. Azriel. What’re you doing at my house?”
Melanie’s interpretation of his name included an extra syllable, and she was still working on pronouncing Zs, but the Illyrian ignored that. “Your house?” he asked. His attention was fully on Melanie, but he sent you a raised brow.
“Um, yes. We live above the apothecary. Melanie sometimes forgets that it’s a business downstairs and not just a private playground,” you explained, rubbing your forearm in discomfort. Azriel tracked the movement.
“Ah, well, it does seem rather fun down here. I can see the confusion.”
Melanie perked up, waving the spoon in front of your face. “See, mommy? There’s lots to play with.”
One of the tightly bound coils in your chest loosened as you shot Azriel a look. “Great. You’re encouraging her.”
“I’ve been an uncle for a few years,” Azriel smiled, rolling the headache tonic between his hands. “I’ve gotten quite good at encouraging terrible things.”
You laughed with a huff and placed a hand on Melanie’s head, bending down to meet her gaze. “Were you going to ask me for dinner? I’ll be up in just a few minutes. I was just putting a few things away.”
“I know, mommy,” she nodded. Then, after a quick look at Azriel from the corner of her eye, she whispered, “Is Mr. Azriel having dinner with us? Nyx has been asking about when we have dinner and said to keep the question a secret, but maybe that’s why he’s here.”
A few feelings barraged you at once. Confusion over your daughter's words; fear that the night court’s inner circle seemed to be asking questions about you; regret that you had given into Melanie’s pleas to go to school so readily.
But Nyx was just a child—perhaps he asked everyone when they had dinner and Melanie was just connecting dots that weren’t there.
But maybe that wasn’t the case.
Maybe Azriel came to the apothecary specifically because you worked there and he was trying to gather intel for the Autumn Court. It had to be common knowledge that the daughter of one of Beron’s men had run away. But Night and Autumn weren’t on the best terms. That’s why you chose Velaris to—
You couldn’t do this right now.
Not in front of Melanie and certainly not in front of Azriel.
You pressed your lips into a firm line and whispered back, “No, he came to buy something from mommy’s shop. It’s just us for dinner, like always.”
A sliver of disappointment fractured Melanie’s gaze. She hooked her chin over her shoulder and sent Azriel a small smile before disappearing into the apartment once more. You wiped your palms on the front of your pants as you stood, taking a breath to calm your raging anxiety.
“Sorry, she…”
“It’s alright,” Azriel dismissed. You looked at him for the first time in a few moments, his expression pinched and difficult to read. “I’m around Nyx a lot. You don’t have to apologize.”
A beat of silence.
The room was cloaked in unrealized tension. You weren’t sure if it was fueled by suspicion or something else. For you, it was, but the wistful way Azriel continued to linger on your figure was read as something else. Something older, more entrenched.
“It’s just two coppers.” You broke the silence, gesturing to the tonic still held between Azriel’s fingers—his scarred fingers, you then realized. You looked back up to his face.
“Only two? After all it took for you to make it?”
You felt your mouth twist at the corner despite yourself. “I don’t know if you’ve seen this place, but it’s not exactly up to par with the rest of the apothecaries. I’m surprised you found it, to be honest. My customers are typically ancient fae with boils and warts.”
“Sorry to disappoint,” Azriel teased. He searched through his pocket and placed a small sum of money on the counter between you. “Five coppers—for interrupting dinner.”
“I hadn’t even—”
“Goodbye, y/n.”
You watched him go, not noticing the shadow that lingered in the corner.

Hooked On A Feeling
Chapter Six - Danny Goes Racing
Daniel is a Formula One driver, but, more importantly, he was a single dad to a wonderful little girl. He wants her to be a normal little girl, to have a normal social life, so he sends her to daycare. That was where she met Milo, her future best friend.
Milo's mother was incredibly stressed. She worked so hard to provide a good life for her son. But then he makes a new friend, a friend who has a hot dad (ofc they fall in love)

Series Masterlist
Y/N picked Olivia up from her mother’s house on Sunday. She left Milo in the car as she ran up to the front door of the incredibly nice house and knocked. Patiently she waited for Olivia’s mother to open the door.
It took a good few minutes before the door opened. Olivia stood at the door, a bag on her back and a child size AlphaTauri hat on her head. “Hi, miss L/N!” She called, beaming wide. She looked back into the house and shouted a loud ‘goodbye’ before shutting the door. It was something Y/N would have done as a teenager, not a five year old.
“Olivia, are you sure your momma is okay with you just leaving like that?” She asked and Olivia nodded her head, quickly taking her hand.
Y/N walked Olivia back to the car. She climbed, sitting on the cushion’s Y/N had put down (because she didn’t have a spare car seat) and secured the buckle of the seat belt. Immediately Milo began talking to her as Y/N walked to the front seat and climbed in. She shot Daniel a quick text before driving the children back to her house.
The kids were excited, that was clear. They unbuckled themselves and jumped out of the car as soon as Y/N opened the door. Milo led Olivia up the path and the two of them waited by the front door. Y/N locked the car and followed the kids, unlocking the front door and letting them in.
Olivia and Milo ran into the living room and jumped onto the sofa. “Put on the race, momma!” Milo shouted as they settled back against the sofa cushions.
Y/N did just that. She turned on the TV and put on the race, allowing the kids to watch the last of the F2 race before the interviews for the F1 race began. She left them there while she got them both something to drink and put some snacks in a bowl for the both of them.
Before she left the kitchen, she pulled her phone out of her pocket and texted Daniel once again. He hadn’t responded to her previous message, but he was busy, he was about to complete a Formula One race. Still, she sent him a good luck text and brought a drink in for the kids.
When Y/N returned with the snacks, the interviews before the race had already started. “That’s my uncle Christian,” said Olivia as an older man in a Red Bull shirt spoke to the camera. “My daddy used to work for him but then he moved to Renault and then McLaren and now he’s in AlphaTauri,” she said and Y/N found herself nodding along.
All she knew about Daniels career was that he was a Formula One driver. She didn’t know anything about teams and how it worked, so she hadn’t thought to ask. But Olivia wasn’t explaining it well. She wasn’t explaining in in great detail, but Y/N was still learning something.
Suddenly she shrieked. “Uncle Lando!” She shouted, pointing at the screen.
Olivia considered almost every driver that her dad had been teammates with to be her uncle. Her favourite uncle was her uncle Max, but she’d never tell the others that. She had her Uncle Max, Uncle Checo, Uncle Lando, Uncle Hulk (Nico Hukenberg), and Uncle Yuki as her dad’s current and ex teammates. But she also had her Uncle Christian, Uncle Zac and Andrea, uncle Pierre, Uncle Charles, Uncle Lewis, Uncle Nando and more. The entire grid was a family to her.
She told Milo and his momma all about her Uncle Lando as they interviewed him. They couldn’t hear what the man on the television was saying, but they happily listened to Olivia as she spoke. “He came to visit us once and took me to play crazy golf because my uncle Lando loves golf.”
And then Lance Stroll appeared on the screen. Olivia launched into a full on explanation into her Uncle Scotty and how he married her Uncle Lance’s sister, and then about how her Uncle Lance bought her a playhouse for their garden when she turned five.
For any driver that appeared on the screen Olivia told Y/N and Milo everything about them.
And then her father appeared on the screen. Milo and Olivia were both shouting, until Daniel started talking. He answered all of the interviewers’ questions, always wearing a smile on his face. He looked so damn happy to be there, Y/N realised as she watched him.
The interviewer went to move on, but Daniel stopped him. “Can I say something?” He asked, his eyes wide and that typical Daniel grin on his face, microphone still in his hands.
“Go for it,” the interviewer replied.
Daniel held his microphone up to his lips. “Hi Livvy, hi Milo!” He said and waved to the camera.
Y/N’s heart thudded in her chest as the kids both shrieked, the two of them excited as ever. That was maybe the sweetest thing anybody had ever done for her son. She couldn’t believe it, couldn’t believe he’d just said hello to him over the television. F
Daniel left the interview, seemingly skipping off. It wasn’t long before the race began and he was already in his AlphaTauri racing suit.
As the interviewer moved onto one last driver, Y/N’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out and looked at the message
daniel riiiiiciaaaardoooo
thank you, milo's momma
She smiled down at her phone, threw it to the side, and watched as the adverts before the race started up.
The race began. Y/N and Milo had no idea what was was going on, but Olivia was more than happy to explain it to them. They didn't even have to ask and Olivia was telling them everything there was to know.
Y/N learnt that her eyes should have been following the number 3 car. She felt an immense amount of panic whenever two of the cars nearly collided.
Daniel spent the entire race in the midfield. When the two cars in front of him touched wheels and two of them went off the track, Y/N held onto her chest. Holy cow, how did anybody do this for a Jon? It was insane just how anxious she was feeling. The poor mothers of the drivers.
Milo was loving it. His eyes were glued to the screen for the entirety of the race.
As soon as the race was over, Y/N couldn't stop herself from texting Daniel about just how terrifying that race was to watch.
y/n (milo's momma)
Milo loved it, though
As soon as the text was sent Y/N got up to make the kids some dinner. Sausage and mash potato. It was a safe bet, something she hoped Olivia would enjoy.
After Dinner Y/N had to take Plivia back home. She didn't want to go, tried to hold onto the banisters to stop Y/N from taking her.
But she took her home, stood with her at the doors while she waited for her mother to open the door. "By Livvy," she said before she left. Olivia threw her arms around her before she trudged into her mothers house.

Absolutely outraged to learn that the little headcanon I dreamt up in bed this morning doesn’t work timeline-wise but screw it, I’m doing it anyway.
When Eddie was small, his mom always used to sing him Rainbow Connection from The Muppet Movie. They’d watched it together over at Uncle Wayne’s trailer when it first came out on VHS and Eddie had been entranced. He’d parked himself right up in front of the small TV, his eyes glued to this little frog playing the banjo.
His mom noticed, of course, and made it theirs. Their song for when his dad was away and they could dance in the kitchen without being yelled at. For when Eddie was sick in bed, or couldn’t sleep, or had woken up with a nightmare. For when he came home from school with grazed palms and tears in his eyes.
“Who said that every wish, would be heard and answered?” his mom sang to him, brushing away Eddie’s tears the day she told him that she was very poorly. That she had to go into hospital, just for a little while, for the doctors to fix her up.
Eddie had asked for the song to be played at her funeral, in his small voice, tugging at his dad’s shirt sleeve. He’d said no, of course. He’d never understood either of them.
But later that night, when everyone had left and his dad was asleep, Uncle Wayne led Eddie out into the backyard and picked up his old guitar. He’d smiled at Eddie as the familiar chords rang out in the night sky and Eddie’s voice trembled when he started to sing, “Why are there so many, songs about rainbows?”
Uncle Wayne’s voice soon joined his, strong and sure. “And what’s on the other side?”
Eddie smiled. Maybe it could be their song, too.
So, years later, when Eddie was shuffling around Steve’s vast kitchen, trying to find where the hell the Harringtons kept their mugs, he found himself humming along to the familiar tune with a happy heart.
“Oho, I see we’ve got another Tammy Thompson fan on our hands here,” came Steve’s voice as he and Robin sidled in and leant against the countertop.
Robin snorted. “Someday we’ll find it,” she sang, her words taking on a pitchy, mocking quality.
Steve joined in, squeaky and off-tune, “The rainbow connection.”
They were grinning at each other as they carried on. “The lovers, the dreamers -”
“Stop,” Eddie yelled, red-faced, his heart beating wildly as he clutched the empty mug in his hand. “Stop it.”
They did, with matching looks of confusion. Clearing spotting the way Eddie was breathing too hard, eyes too glassy, Steve shifted. “Shit, sorry Eddie. We didn’t mean anything.”
And it was bullshit because Eddie knew that. How could they know about that song, about his mom and Uncle Wayne and everything it meant? They couldn’t, but now Eddie had made it weird. Made it awkward. But he was still too worked up, he couldn’t explain.
“S'okay,” he said. “I guess I just don’t feel well. Might go home.”
He didn’t let either of them get another word in before he fled the house.
The next day, Eddie was disturbed from his still-embarrased wallowing by a gentle knock on his bedroom door. It was Uncle Wayne, with a soft look on his face.
“The Harrington boy’s here,” he said. “Came to apologise. Called last night, you know. We talked for a bit.”
He disappeared and moments later a contrite-looking Steve shuffled in.
Eddie pushed himself up against his headboard.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “It was just a joke Robin and I have. I would never -” He cut himself off and sat down on the end of the bed, a little sheepishly. “I got you this.”
Steve pulled his hand out from behind his back to reveal a tiny Kermit the Frog toy, complete with a small, squishy banjo.
Eddie’s chest clenched. He reached out for the toy and smiled wide at Steve.
When the other man dragged him into a hug, Eddie let himself fall into it.
Maybe it wasn’t going to be a song for him and Steve, but it could definitely be the start of something sweet.
[Yeah, I'm scouring the archives and trying to salvage as many headcanons as I can from my old deleted account, but let's just pretend this is brand new content.]

The white board on your refrigerator had been updated by Everett. There was only one day left until Bradley was going to adopt him, and your body was thrumming with anticipation. The three of you were about to become the Bradshaws, for real.
Your husband made your home so much warmer. His big shoes were lined up next to yours and Everett's inside the front door. His schedule was hanging next to the white board so he knew which days he needed to wear his flight suit. His favorite beer was in a battle for precious real estate against your cold brew coffee. For someone who claimed he never had a real home before this since his mom died, he was doing a great job of making yours even better.
"We're heading to the park for a bit," Bradley said, wrapping his arm casually around your waist from behind as you made dinner. "We'll be back in less than an hour." He kissed the side of your neck and held you snug against him for a beat. "I love you."
How was living without him ever supposed to compete with this? You turned and watched him take Everett by the hand, and they walked out to the Bronco talking a mile a minute about math homework and batting averages.
You were trying to make a special dinner, because Molly was coming over with Bob. He'd arrived back in San Diego earlier this morning, and Molly texted you to let you know she was taking Bob home for a long nap, and then they would be over. A long nap sounded like a euphemism for some freaky sex, but you were just pleased that he was back and that Molly was happy.
Your sister and Bob walked in at the same time that Bradley and Everett returned from the park. "Uncle Bob! I missed you!" your son shouted, running across the living room to his former tee ball coach and perhaps someday uncle. Bob knelt down and collected him in a tight hug. "And Aunt Molly missed you so much. She ate a lot of chocolate and cried sometimes."
You watched Bob glance up at Molly with such a lovesick expression, you had to turn away. "I missed you too, Ev," he replied. "And I missed your Aunt Molly and the baby. I heard you shared your candy with her."
"I did," he said proudly as you walked dinner over to the dining room table. Bradley pulled Bob into a brief hug, and then you kissed him softly on the cheek.
"How was your deployment? Uneventful, I hope?" you asked him with a smile.
"Another woman kissed him," Molly said, casually slipping into her usual seat and scooping food onto her plate as you gasped. "He doesn't understand how handsome he is."
"Mo," Bob groaned, sliding down in the seat next to her while his cheeks flushed pink. "Why are you telling them this?"
You made eye contact with Bradley across the room, and he shrugged, just as confused as you were. "Is everything okay?" you asked cautiously.
But Bob was kissing Molly's fingertips as she ran her nose along his cheek as if she hadn't just made that announcement to the room. They still looked as in love as they always did, and Molly's face was placid as she started scooping dinner onto Everett's plate.
"Everything's fine," Bob said, nodding at you. "I had no idea anything like that could even happen. I'll be more proactive in the future."
"Yes," Molly agreed. "No more gray sweatpants on deployments. We both learned our lesson."
"Gray sweatpants?" you asked as you sat down across from Molly. "You wore gray sweatpants in front of someone other than Molly?"
Bob cradled his face in embarrassment, pinching his nose just below his glasses. "I did. I told you it was a bad idea from the start, Honey," he whispered to Molly.
"You wore them in public?!" Bradley nearly shouted. "Bob, that's bedroom attire."
"I know that now," Bob bit back. "Nothing happened. Nothing else is ever going to happen. Can we eat dinner and stop talking about it?" he asked, wrapping his arm around Molly's shoulder. "I missed being here. I'm happy I made it back in time for Bradley and Everett's big day. I just want to be with my family."
Molly pecked him on the cheek. "You're hot, Cowboy Bob. You can't afford the luxury of making late night friends on deployments. It doesn't matter who they are, they probably want to fuck you."
"Molly!" you growled, tossing your fork down and glaring at her as you nodded to Everett.
But your son just shrugged. "It's okay. I already heard dad say it before. I know it's an adult word. It's cool."
Bradley noisily dished more food onto everyone's plates as you shook your head at him. "This is delicious, Kitten. Wow, you've outdone yourself. You want more, Molly? Have some more."
You closed your eyes and sighed. Bradley and Molly were more similar than they'd like to think. And Bob was definitely a catch even if he didn't feel like one. And you were too thankful for all of them to put up much of a fuss. "After we eat, let's talk about a game plan for tomorrow."
"Adoption day," Everett said, all smiles for Bradley.
"I love you, Ev," your husband told him, scooping a little more food onto his plate. You could tell your son would never get tired of hearing that, and neither would you.
--------------------------
"Are you guys nervous?" you asked as Bradley pulled into the municipal parking lot behind the courthouse.
"Nope," Bradley and Everett replied in unison. Bradley was ready for this. Any apprehension he'd felt leading up to this afternoon was related to Danny, but your lawyer assured you that there would be no contest over the state of Everett's adoption.
"I'm a little nervous," you muttered, wrapping your hand around Bradley's after he turned the key in the ignition. "Why aren't Molly and Bob here yet?"
"We're early, Kitten," he muttered, leaning across the seat to give you a kiss. He turned around to smile at Ev, sitting in his booster seat. They were wearing matching blue dress shirts and jeans, and Everett was holding his Phillies cap. "Hey, kiddo. When I drop you off at school tomorrow, I'll bring the paperwork so they know it's okay for you to write Everett Bradshaw on your homework, okay?"
Everett nodded in response. "And do you think my teacher will change the name tag on my desk? I don't like my old name anymore."
You unbuckled your seatbelt and snuggled against his chest as Bradley said, "I'll make sure it gets changed. It's not going to be an issue."
The three of you sat there for a couple minutes as Bradley rubbed your back. He answered every question Everett asked him.
"What was your dad's name again? And didn't he have a call sign too? Was your mom's last name Bradshaw? How many Bradshaws are there?"
If only they could be here today, Bradley was sure he would get to see his mom doting on Everett. Goose would have been all too happy to spread the Bradshaw name around. He knew his parents would be proud of him. "My dad was Nick Bradshaw, and his call sign was Goose." Everett giggled, and Bradley laughed too. "It's even sillier than Rooster, huh?"
"I like my call sign better than the bird ones," Everett said.
"Me too," Bradley whispered, registering that you were wiping your eyes. "Goose would have liked it the most."
"Grampa Goose would have liked my call sign?" Everett asked in surprise, and Bradley nodded silently, taking a few breaths to steady himself.
"Grampa Goose would have liked everything about you."
"Bradley," you whispered, squeezing him tight. His heart could only take so much before he started crying, too. So he kissed your forehead and wiped your cheeks.
"Let's start heading inside," he whispered. "Molly and Bob will be here soon, I'm sure."
When he opened his door and stepped out into the afternoon sunlight, Bradley's eyes met Danny's from several cars away. He tried to ignore your ex husband as he scooped Everett out of the booster seat and set him down. He tried his best to avoid him until everyone went inside. But as you walked around the Bronco and took Ev's hand in yours, Bradley heard Danny laugh sardonically.
"It's about time. I was worried you were backing out of getting this kid off my hands. I really don't feel like paying child support."
Bradley's vision wavered. He could hear a high pitched buzzing in his ears. He wanted nothing more than to permanently wipe that smirk off of Danny's face as he slammed the driver's door closed.
"What did you just say to me?" Bradley snarled, rolling his neck as he strolled toward Danny.
"You heard me just fine," he replied, squaring his shoulders and smirking. "But I wouldn't have blamed you for backing out. She's an annoying handful even without the kid. Should have used two condoms." But when Bradley got right up into his personal space, Danny started to look a little scared.
Bradley had some weight on him, and he could take a few punches, no problem. His jaw flexed and he curled his hands into fists as he said, "Don't you fucking dare talk about my family like that."
Chest to chest, he pushed Danny back against an SUV. Bradley could hear you calling his name, panic lacing your voice, but he couldn't stop now. Rage flowed through his body. If Danny didn't punch him, he was most definitely going to be the one to do it.
"Your family is a joke," Danny said softly. "You tried sleeping with her sister yet?"
That was it. Bradley shoved him with his left hand as he drew back his right fist, but before he could do much of anything else, strong arms wrapped around him from behind and pinned his arms to his sides. Bob's voice was in his ear as he tried his best to pull Bradley backwards.
"Come on, Rooster. You don't want to do this. Ev is watching."
Bradley let Bob yank him a few more feet away from Danny, and then he turned to see you, Ev and Molly all standing by the Bronco looking terrified.
"You're not fucking worth it, you piece of shit," Bradley told Danny who was still smiling like a prick.
"Thanks for giving me the best day of my life," he replied, straightening out his shirt and winking. Bob kept a good hold on Bradley until Danny was inside the courthouse.
"You okay?" he asked, and Bradley shook him off. The thing was this really was the best day of Bradley's life. Or maybe the second best. Either way, he didn't want to ruin it now.
"Yeah," he replied, his voice rough with emotion. And then he was scooping Everett into his arms. "I'm sorry, kiddo. I didn't mean to scare you."
"I don't like my old dad," he replied softly, wrapping his arms around Bradley's neck.
"I promise, this is the last time you'll ever have to see him." Everett nodded against Bradley's shoulder as he leaned down and pressed his forehead to yours. "I'm sorry, Kitten."
"I don't want you to get in trouble, Bradley," you said, voice shaky. "He's not even worth it."
"I know," he replied softly, kissing your cheek and nodding at Bob. "He's so horrible, I can't understand how Ev is perfect."
You kind of shrugged and said, "It's like he was never there, Coach. It was like we were just waiting for you the whole time. You were tailor made for us."
Bradley wore those words with pride as Bob held the door open, and he carried Everett inside the courthouse behind you and Molly. He didn't even look at Danny again. Instead he focused on his son and his wife. He let Molly distract him. He kept his arms wrapped around Everett until the judge called them all up to the front of the room.
And then it was scary how fast everything moved. It was unsettling how easily Danny announced to the entire fucking room that he wanted nothing to do with Everett. He didn't want his own son. Bradley listened to him say, "I contest nothing. I relinquish all of my rights."
And even though Bradley knew Everett was excited that he was being adopted, those words from his biological father packed a punch. Maybe Everett didn't understand their full meaning yet, but Bradley definitely did.
When the judge asked Bradley to confirm that he wanted to adopt Everett, he reached for Ev's hand. This perfect kid was looking right up at him with innocent, trusting eyes and a worried expression. Bradley felt your hand on his back, and he could hear you crying softly.
"Do you want to adopt your wife's child?" the judge asked again.
Did he want to? More than anything. He could hardly believe he was even allowed to do something so grand and meaningful. It was hard for him to acknowledge that Everett wanted him.
"Yes, I want to adopt you, Everett. I can't wait to be your dad. It kind of feels like I've already been your dad for months and months, kiddo."
That sweet face erupted into a bright smile. "Yeah, it's been a good couple of months, Coach."
Bradley laughed in spite of himself, and he felt your hand drop down to lace fingers with him. "The best. And now it's going to be forever. Yes, I want to adopt you." Then he turned to kiss your forehead before looking at the judge. "Yes, I want to adopt Everett."
"And you'll take full, permanent legal custody?"
"Yes. Happily." He smiled down at Everett before scooping him up with his right arm while still holding your hand with his left. He felt his eyes prickle with the feeling of unshed tears when Ev wrapped his arms around his neck, just knowing he'd be safe and loved.
"Then I grant Bradley Bradshaw full legal custody."
Even though Bradley expected to hear those words today, he felt his tears finally give way. "I love you," he whispered, burying his face against Everett. "Thanks for letting me be your dad."
Then Bradley's lips were on yours, and you wrapped your arms around both of them. And Bradley hadn't felt this much love since he was a little boy. He was getting a second chance at having a perfect little family of three. And he'd do everything he could to keep this feeling.
"Thank you, Kitten," he gasped, letting you wipe his tears away with your soft fingertips. Bradley was vaguely aware that Danny had quickly signed a few papers and turned to stroll out of the courtroom, just going along with his day like none of this was important. But it was important to Bradley. And it was important to Everett. And he refused to release his grip on you or his son as he signed his own set of paperwork a little awkwardly fumbling the pen a bit.
"That's it?" he asked the clerk who collected the paperwork. "I'm his dad now, for real? He can change his last name to Bradshaw?"
And Bradley got the perfect response. "That's it. He's your son."
"He's my son!" Bradley shouted, releasing your hand and hugging a happy, giggling Everett. "He's my son." He carried Everett across the room to where Molly had tears streaming down her cheeks as she held Bob's hand.
"You know, I'm not even going to call you a turd for the rest of the day," she sobbed, reaching up to give Bradley a kiss on the cheek. "I'm happy for you, Ev," she told her nephew. "We were pretty good before, but we're better with Bradley."
"And Uncle Bob," Everett added, reaching out to give Bob a high five.
"Yes," Molly agreed, "and Uncle Bob." She looked up at her boyfriend with adoration. "I love my family."
Bradley loved this family, too. And he was never going to stop talking about it. And he was never going to set Everett down. And he was never going to stop doting on the two of you.
"I can't believe you're really ours now," you whispered as tears shone in your eyes. "Officially."
"You're the loves of my life, Kitten. Both of you."
-------------------------
As Bradley settled into a chair at the table with the paper tablecloth and crayons, he kept Everett on his lap. He didn't need to look at the menu. You already knew what kind of pizza and beer everyone liked. When the waitress came to take the order, Bradley added, "And some apple juice for my son, please."
And next thing he knew, Molly was crying in the seat across from him, insisting they were all just happy tears. And then Nat showed up with a bunch of balloons that said #1 DAD. And you kept calling him Everett's father and leaning in to kiss him.
"Stop, please," Bradley said, holding a napkin underneath the piece of pizza that Everett was eating. He caught the sauce before it dripped onto Ev's lap and added, "I can only take so much before I start crying again."
He had cried in the Bronco on the way to the restaurant. Then he cried harder when Everett asked him, "Why are you crying, dad?" And now he felt those same happy tears once again.
"I think it's sweet," you told him with a soft smile. "All the tears."
"I'm barely holding it together, Kitten," he whispered, catching more of Everett's sauce on the napkin. "It's overwhelming."
When everyone was finished eating, there was a battle over who was going to pay. Bradley watched everyone pull out their wallets and credit cards, a cacophony erupting about why each person wanted to treat him to his first dinner as a dad. But he stood up, still holding onto Everett. "I want to pay!" he said, letting Everett stand on the empty chair next to him. "Because until very recently, I never knew how badly I needed to treat my family to a pizza night." He took a deep breath and sighed. "Nat, you've been my friend and family for the longest. And I love you for that."
She smiled at him and nodded. "Love you too, Bradshaw."
Bradley reached out a hand to fist bump Bob. "And then Bob became a friend that morphed into family, all because of tee ball. And now I have a sister-in-law who likes to pick on me relentlessly. You better marry him, Molly."
She just kind of shrugged, but Bradley didn't miss the coy smile on her lips. "We'll see."
Then Bradley turned to you and leaned down to kiss your lips. "I never thought I'd have a sister-in-law, because I never thought I'd be lucky enough to get married in the first place. But I love you, Kitten. I'm gonna love you forever. Both of you."
"You're the best thing that ever happened to us, Coach," you whispered, brushing your lips against his again.
And then Bradley turned his attention to Everett. "But you've made me feel complete, kiddo. A son? On top of everything else? It doesn't seem possible. But I can't wait to do all the father and son stuff."
Then Everett simply said, "I love you, dad."
"I love you, too."
Bradley paid for dinner and carried his son out to the parking lot. And the whole way home, he held your hand. "What do the two of you think about Disney World for winter break? Or we could go to Phillies spring training? But we don't want to risk missing Ev's cousin being born. So I was thinking a trip to Philadelphia next summer instead? Maybe catch a Phillies doubleheader, meet the Phanatic, and eat some cheesesteaks. Just the three of us."
"Yes!" Everett cheered from the backseat, pumping his fists in the air. "I can get the Phanatic to sign my baseball card!"
"Well?" Bradley asked you as he pulled into the driveway while Everett sang the Phillie Phanatic song. "What do you wanna do, Kitten?"
You unbuckled yourself and crawled across the seat, wrapping your arms around his neck, and Bradley melted into your touch. Your lips brushed his, and he smiled as you said, "Anything. As long as it's the three of us."

i just had an idea while talking with ai neteyam last night. What about human reader asking neteyam to make a "movie" together. Or else neteyam learning about porn thanks to one of the guy from the lab and asking reader if she wants to do one. ‼️
wait no cause Neteyam learning about human stuff does things to me and I need to write more of it for my own sanity. also i've discovered my fave trope to write is "people doing embarrassing things and other people catching them and the interactions that bloom thereafter". anyway, enjoy bestie x
ps: i'm probably going to have reached 1800 followers when this is posted so thank you besties ilysm smooches!!!
wc: 990 words
18+ minors dni
Neteyam was up and early today in the lab, too excited to see you and spend the day together to wait any longer. He was a bit disillusioned though, as he came and found you fast asleep in your bed, but despite the minor disappointment, he absolutely adored how relaxed and comfortable you looked as you were splayed like a starfish under the covers, your feet dangling slightly off both sides of the mattress.
He decided to keep busy for a while with the scientists in the lab. He essentially grew up with Norm and Max, a strange, peculiar constant in his otherwise all Na'vi lifestyle and he had his dad to thank for that. He loved them, they were like uncles to him, and despite how much he hated to admit it, there were certain things about humanity he liked, and certain things about humans he found... endearing. Clearly, he thought with a chuckle, mind wandering to you.
"Neteyam, good morning! You're here early today, is everything ok?" Norm had a big smile on his face and his predisposition brightened Neteyam's, who was suddenly happy to be able to spend a little one-on-one time with him.
"Everything's fine, just came to see her, but she's still sleeping."
Norm chuckles as he removes his gloves and throws them in a nearby yellow bin.
"Yeah, she was doing data analysis until late last night. She used my laptop, you can look at it if you want? We did some a timelapse of an immunofluorescent experiment and it's actually really cool to see. Just open my laptop and it should be there."
Neteyam did as he was told. When he opened the lid of the laptop, the image he saw stilled him on the spot, his hand still gripping the screen, almost unable to move or think, just feeling a tinge of raw curiosity, of unhindered temptation. Because on the screen were two humans. The woman was on all fours, head thrown so far back Neteyam was almost worried for her, eyes shut tightly and an almost pained expression on her face, although Neteyam doubted pain was anywhere near what she was feeling in the moment. The man was kneeled behind her, his cock sunk in her almost to the base, holding on to her long ponytail and pulling on it with one hand, the other hand tightly gripping her hip, imprints clearly visible on her skin.
The feelings this evoked in Neteyam were mixed and intense, from wonderment, to confusion, to deep, intense arousal, the blood quickly rushing from his brain to much lower down, and he felt the need to adjust his loincloth to ease some of the discomfort he was currently experiencing. What was this? Who were these people? He's never seen them before among the humans, and Eywa, was Neteyam glad to say that.
"Um... Norm, I don't think this is the experiment you wanted me to see."
Norm walked over to where Neteyam was sitting, mildly amused at Neteyam and his obvious lack of skill around technology. Neteyam almost jumped out of his skin at Norm's gasp and startled demeanour when he saw what Neteyam was looking at, and at how aggressively he was pushing the off button, trying to remove the image from his eyes, and his brain.
"Fuck... I... I'm so sorry, Neteyam. I -..." Neteyam watched dumbfounded as Norm turned on his heels and left, still wearing his labcoat and goggles, and he knew that if Norm were to have a tail, it'd definitely be in between his legs right now.
You were sprawled on the bed similarly to how you had been just a few hours ago, except right now you had the added weight of a almost 9 foot tall alien on top of you, a weight you'd never want to lose. He looked nervous about one thing or another, and you knew based on how his breath was increasing in speed that he was going to spill it soon enough.
"What is it, Teyam? Come on, out with it."
His cheeks turned a deep shade of purple as his eyes avoided yours.
"I saw something today, on Norm's laptop... something I don't think I was meant to see."
"Oh?" That definitely peaked your attention. What would anything on Norm's laptop make Neteyam so fidgety?
"It was... a man and a woman... they were... uhm... naked." Neteyam felt like his face was about to catch fire, and you cackled loudly, finding it hard to believe that Norm had porn on his laptop and was so careless about it.
"OH, MY GOD! I'M NEVER LETTING HIM LIVE THIS DOWN!"
"Wh-what.. was it?"
"Oh, yawne... it's called porn. It's... a video of people going at it."
Neteyam's confusion didn't lessen; quite the opposite, actually.
"But why?"
"Well, let's see, what did it make you feel?" Your raised eyebrow and knowing smirk was enough to make Neteyam's ears flatten in shame.
"Well...I -"
You chuckled. "There you go. That's why. It helps humans... release tension. If it's done well, it can be quite the experience."
"D-do you watch... porn?" the word felt weird and unfamiliar rolling off his tongue.
"Sometimes. But honestly, I think I'd prefer making porn."
Neteyam almost choked at your words, but couldn't help the way his cock twitched in his tewng, and how much his mind wandered at the image he saw and how much he wanted to see you in it, it in front of his eyes, there captured for eternity for him to enjoy... over and over again.
"You... want to... make porn?"
Your hips raised, brushing against his now rock hard-on, moaning a little at the way it relieved some of the pressure building up in your core.
"Only with you, yawne."
He kissed you passionately, ripping the buttons on your top as he undressed you, and made a mental note of yet another thing he should thank humans for.

girl dad quinn hughes is my weakness… would you mind writing something for him 🥺🥺
thank you 🫶🫶🫶
thank you anon for for the request! you ask and you shall receive. i appreciate your patience with me. school is crazy rn and i got sick. so with out further ado… i present girl dad! quinn hughes!
the birthday party
description: Quinn and y/n throw little Maya a pool party for her 7th birthday.
extra notes: girl dad! Quinn and sweetness after the cut. sorry in advance for typos and errors! lmk if there’s anything i should add! you have my sincerest apologies if this is utterly awful.
Today was a special day for the Hughes family. Namely, a special day for you and quinn. Seven years ago, today, you gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Maya had changed both you and Quinns lives for the better. You remember the day like it was yesterday. It’s seems like just a few days ago you and quinn were learning how to change diapers and balance him being gone so often due to his job. In the beginning, Quinn felt so guilty for being gone and not being able to see Maya everyday. It was hard for him.
He always found a way to make the most out of his time when he was home. Quinn’s favorite thing to do when he is home was take Maya to the zoo. There, he taught her all the different animals and what sounds they make. You’ve always admired his love and patience for your daughter. Quinn was a natural at fatherhood and it suited him.
Which brings you to today, Quinn took the innovative to plan Maya’s entire party out. Well, being born in the summer time has its perks. Maya had begged Quinn for days about having a mermaid pool party. You remember the day she decided, you were picking her up from school when she burst out yelling, “ I WANT A MERMAID PARTY!!”. You laughed and told her to ask dad to see if it was okay. Quinn didn’t say no, he can never so no to her. That night she asked him, he started planning it, showing you different mermaid tails he found online. He told you, “You can’t have a mermaid party and not have tails”.
After picking out tails for Maya and her friends, Quinn moved onto entertainment. To which he told you that he hired an actor to play a mermaid. If you weren’t already in love with this man now, you just fell in love. Quinn does anything and everything for his girls, even renting a mermaid for his daughter’s birthday. You were in charge of snacks. This was the only thing Quinn let you do. He did everything else and planned it perfectly.
You and Quinn started setting all the decorations up at 9:45 because the party started at 11. You had to admit Quinn did a beautiful job picking everything out. He picked out sea shells and streamers in different shades of blue. He even had a custom banner made that said “Happy 7th Birthday Maya!”. You set up the tables with the snacks and juices. You left just enough room for the cake to go in the middle. Quinn also had this specially made, it had two mermaids on either side with a birthday message.
Finally, you guys had finished setting up. Maya was inside the house watching cartoons when you and Quinn came inside. He ran up to the couch and picked her up. “Happy birthday Bug! I can’t believe you’re turning 6,” He said. Maya laughed and said “You’re silly dad! I’m turning seven”. To which quinn replied, “Oh that’s right you are!”. You chuckled at the interaction. He’s always so gentle with her. It makes your heart melt every time.
“Alright, you two let’s get our swimsuits on the party is going to start soon,” you said. Maya quickly jumped out of Quinns arms after that. Shortly, after that people started arriving. Luke and Jack were first to show up, Maya was so excited to see her favorite uncles! She ran up out of the pool and yelled to them,” LUKEY. JACK. HIII”. She proceeded to get them both a big wet hug. It’s a good thing they were wearing their swimsuits. Next to arrive was your parents and following them were her other grandparents.
Then all of Maya’s friends she invited started to show up and it was getting busy. You were busy talking to all the parent when you heard a bunch of squeals coming from the pool. When you turned around you saw the mermaid in the pool. You looked over at Quinn who had a smile plastered on his face and taking pictures. He had done it. This was definitely going to be the birthday party of the year, you thought. That’s when you heard Maya yell, “MOM AND DAD LOOK A REAL MERMAID!” Jack and Luke laughed at her excitement.
The girls talked and played with the actor mermaid for some time. Then it was time for her to leave to the girls disappointed. That’s when you told them it was time for cake, it cheered them up quickly. You guys Sang Happy Birthday to her and opened presents.
The day had gone by in a blink of an eye. Maya had been bathed and you and Quinn were putting her to bed. You guys read her a bedtime story about mermaids for the occasion. After the story was finished Maya yawned and sleepily told you guys thank you for the best party ever. You got up to leave and get ready for bed, but when you got to the door. You heard Quinn tell Maya he was so grateful for her and mom and dad would love her forever. He tucked her into bed and snuck out into the hall where you were. He hugged you so tight, kissed you on the head, and said “Thank you for giving me my greatest gift in life”.

She Loved You (extended)
JJ Maybank x Routledge!Reader
Word Count: 721
Warnings:none
A/n: part two you’ve all been waiting for; side note @softboystarkey i saw ur user on the list and fangirled, ily
The moment John B had seen the familiar scrawl on the outside of a large manilla envelope, he called everyone over to read it. So here the group sat, sitting on the deck as JB pulled the papers out.
“JJ this one’s specifically for you.” He started to hand it to the boy, but he was cut off.
“No, read it aloud. I won’t be able to get through it.”
So that’s what John B did. He started to narrate his best friend’s words.
J,
I really truly hope this letter gets to you. I didn’t want to put a return address on the envelope because I still can’t come home. I do, though, have something very important to tell you.
For starters, I am safe. I have a roof over my head, a job, and maybe just one friend. I hope you and our gang of bandits are doing alright. I hope JB has forgiven me, because I fucking miss my older brother. It’s taking me longer to detach from you than I thought it would, mostly because you were my whole world. But also because I couldn’t stay away from the ocean. You and the sea are slowly becoming two separate entities, even if I see your eyes every time I look out my bedroom window.
I hope you found happiness. I hope you are with Kie, giving her all the smiles, hugs and affection that only you could muster. If not her, I hope someone is receiving all the love you have to give. In our time growing up, the two of us have seen many marriages fail (I mean we were both raised by single fathers), and many survive. Miserably survive. That was also why I left. I didn’t want us to end up like either.
The day you told me how you felt about Kiara had been one of the worst days of my life, and hearing you tell me you wanted another girl wasn’t even the worst thing. About two hours before I met you at the bluffs I took a test. And it was positive. Your pull out game fucking sucks. But so does my ability to take birth control apparently.
John B stopped reading, as Sarah uttered a “shut the fuck up,” and JJ was paling by the second.
I was terrified, then over the moon, then shattered. I didn’t want you to feel like you had to stay with me because I was pregnant, we’ve seen how that plays out time and time again. I thought about getting rid of it completely, then maybe adoption. Once I heard your confession later that day I knew I had to keep it, so I could have a little bit of you no matter what happened.
What I’m trying to say is you have a daughter. She was born on October 17th, healthy and happy. Her name is Quincie, Quincie Jay. She’s so beautiful, JJ. She has your blonde hair, my dark eyes, and loves to test the limits. Quincie loves the water. And the beach. Especially the sand.
I’m coming home soon. I never want to keep her from you, I just wanted to let your universe work itself out before she made an entrance (and boy was it grand). She needs her dad, her two uncles, her two aunts and she needs to learn how to be a cockroach like the rest of us. I want you in her life, she needs to experience love from a Maybank boy. I added a picture to the bottom of the envelope so you could see her.
All my love,
Y/n (& QJ)
John B shook the package and a 4x6 photo of both Y/n and Quincie fell out. Y/n had eyes so full of love for her daughter, they were shining so bright the group barely noticed her now darker hair, free of charms, thread and braids, or the lack of her freckles. Quincie Jay on the other hand, she was laughing, her mouth was open, and Y/n was right. She looked like JJ with her mother’s eyes. His girls looked so lovely.
The group was frantic trying to take a peek at the baby girl in the photo. But all JJ could think about was that his girls were coming home.

Calamitous Love Collection: Delicate Beginning Rush (1/4
ex veteran!Steve Rogers x reader
Premise: Steve Rogers blows into town in search of some estranged family. As he settles into civilian life, he realizes leaving work is hard and perhaps the world will never stop needing him.
Warnings: depictions of PTSD, mentions of abandonment by a romantic partner, complex familial dynamics, sexual content.
Thank you as always to @eightcevanscentral. And thank you to you all, for not forgetting me. I'm happy to write again.
Main Masterlist
Ari blinks mutely at the stranger-who’s-not-actually-a-stranger sitting in his armchair, where he made himself comfortable without permission. With the information that was just revealed to him, he’s a little more possessive of every molecule in the cabin.
His mother had opened the door, then stole everyone’s attention with her shocked gasp and the shrill sound of glass hitting the floor. Ari had rushed in and his wife, asleep on the couch, woke up and surveyed the surroundings.
Soon enough, everyone was baffled by the appearance of a man named Steve Rogers claiming to be Albert Levinson’s half-brother.
As Ari continues to stew over everything he just learned, his wife pipes up, “Give him a moment.”
“I’m going to need several moments,” he adds quickly, his voice dripping with his confusion. “You’re going to waltz in here and tell me that my dad’s father,” Ari begins, using hand gestures to help him keep track of all the people he’s about to mention, “My grandpa Alexander–whose last name is actually Rogers–left my grandmother Andrea Levinson and ran off with some other woman and had you?”
“That’s correct,” Steve says bluntly.
“And that makes you,” Ari points an incredulous finger at him, “My dad’s half-brother, and my half-uncle.”
“Correct again. Except, ‘half-uncle’ is a little odd to say because I’m about twenty years younger than your father. I’m probably only a few years older than you.”
“No,” Ari denies immediately, getting up from his spot next to his wife. “Nope, this is a dream. This is some crazy, twisted reality that I’ve been trapped in–”
“Ari, dear,” Bunny sighs, “This isn’t a dream, I promise. And…that’s kind of how family trees work.”
“And he’s not wrong,” Marcella adds plainly.
All eyes shift to her.
“You knew?!” Ari shouts, earning a stern look from him mother, which he quickly counters with an apology. “But…mom, why didn’t you tell me?” he whines.
The women in the room roll their eyes and Bunny turns to Steve as Marcella begins to explain the matter to her son. “I apologize for my husband’s behavior. As you can tell, this news is quite a shock to him.”
“I can’t say I blame him,” Steve shrugs.
She mirrors his gesture, then offers him something to drink.
“If it wouldn’t trouble you to get some water, I’d appreciate it.”
“Not a bother at all,” she waves him off before getting up, walking past the other two in the room and drawing Steve’s attention to them.
“...Your father and I just didn’t think it was so important. They lived such separate lives, anyway. And think about it, what does this change, after all? You still have this house, you have your wife, you have me.”
“I just can’t imagine leaving,” he sighs, eyes drifting to his wife in the kitchen, standing on her toes to grab a glass all the way in the back of the cupboard.
He’s told her many times to stop that out of worry she’d overextend the delicate tendons of her ankles. Went as far as building a step stool she doesn’t even use; he huffs a laugh to himself as he watches her move to the fridge and take out the water pitcher. The liquid sloshes with the movement and swaying of the various fruits she had put to make it just a little bit more refreshing.
Strawberries, mint, and watermelon in his water; her hands in his; holes in his shirts with constantly fresh stitches; the prospect of filling frames with pictures of a growing family; she was home to him. How could he ever think about abandoning it?
The idea that his grandfather did something he can’t begin to understand, that’s what sits in his stomach and tangles up his insides.
Steve didn’t do that. He was just the product of it.
His eyes follow his wife as she walks back into the living area, handing him a glass of water.
“Thank you,” he says softly, taking a sip before his eyes meet Ari’s.
“Do you have a place to stay?” Ari asks.
“I was going to shack up at the inn after this.”
“No need,” Ari shakes his head. “We have plenty of room here.”
“Are you sure?” Steve chuckles slightly, “I think I broke your brain when I walked in and told my story. Seems like staying over would rock the boat even more.”
The air in the cabin suddenly lightens, tension fading away as everyone laughs.
“On the contrary, what better way to get to know your family than by staying with us?”
Steve shrugs and smiles, “Well, I guess I better get my things then.”
Ari offers his help and the two men begin to bring Steve’s bags into the cabin. There isn’t much, about three pieces of baggage to bring in.
When they shut the door and appear to get settled, Marcella pipes up, “Oh good, you’re done.”
“Mama, what are you doing?” he asks, watching as she settles the strap of her purse on her shoulder.
“I’m ready to go to town to get my nails done.”
“Ma, I told you this morning–”
“Right, you have some silly little project to work on and my lovely daughter-in-law is cooking for the week.”
“I don’t think fixing a leak in the sink is–”
“Yeah, that one,” she waves him off, “Anyway, as I was saying, I wasn’t asking you to bring me. Steve has a car.”
“Ma, he’s a guest–”
She scoffs, “Oh, please, he’s family, and it would give him a chance to explore the town a bit. Doesn’t that sound great, Steve?”
Mute from being put on the spot, Steve takes a moment to process before agreeing to do it.
“See? Everyone’s happy!” Marcella chastises Ari.
She makes her way out the front door and the men hear a snort from the kitchen.
Bunny pauses and looks up from the vegetables she’s chopping, “Welcome to the family, Steve.”
- - -
After dropping Marcella off at the salon, Steve found a spot under a tree to park in.
Stepping out of the car, the main avenue of the town looked familiar and foreign at the same time.
It was a typical American small town busy road: cars parked along the sidewalk, wide streets and walkways, stores directly next door to one another, hustle and bustle. Every American knows it, and it’s likely non-Americans know it too.
But when was the last time Steve saw one for himself?
It wasn’t that long ago, but it feels like it was.
Before the jet rides to quickly get from place to place. Before the case files and research. Before commlinks and codes. Before sleepless nights planning missions and long days carrying them out. Days would turn into weeks, weeks into months, months into years.
He’s given so much of his life and focus into it that he doesn’t remember life where he wasn’t doing it. He knows there was something before it because every adult has memories of growing up, being a child, and going to high school.
In Steve’s brain, those recollections are locked away in a corner of his brain he locked away to be able to do his job.
The things he was afraid of as a kid, the insecurities that held him back as a teenager, the innocence everyone has before becoming an adult; he lost touch with all of it, lost touch with himself.
It had gone too far on the last mission. His friend sent him home with the promise the team would be okay without him.
The voice of a conversing family draws him out of his dazed state, catching a glimpse of two kids skipping while their parents gently caution them.
Sighing, Steve moves onto the sidewalk and begins to walk down the street. When a door swings open, he sees the brief image of his walk: stiff, arms swinging in tight control and calculated steps as if he’s back at boot camp.
Slowing his pace, he thinks about how to appear more casual; he is, after all, a civilian now.
Relax, Rogers, he can hear Natasha say. No, seriously. We’re supposed to be walking through the mall, not running to the drill sergeant’s back and call.
He lets his shoulders deflate, shoves his hands in his pockets, and tries to find a comfortable pattern of steps.
While he can’t be certain, Steve has that nagging feeling that he looks like an idiot.
Pursing his lips, he decides to distract himself by looking at the various window displays along the sidewalk. There’s a certain small town comfort that comes from the bright colors and fun arrangements that are meant to attract customers. Different phrases like “fun in the sun” emulate the summer air, while silly props like turtle-shaped inner tubes evoke a type of nostalgia that most people are lucky to have when thinking of their long breaks from school.
Steve knows in the dark annals of his mind, those memories are there.
Before he can deep dive into retrieving them while staring at a flamingo pool floatie, he’s interrupted by a parent pulling his son out from a nearby store.
“Why can’t I have him now?!”
“If you can do your chores consistently for a month, we’ll talk about it. Puppies aren’t toys. They’re a responsibility, like your chores. And you keep putting those off.”
The conversation fades as Steve draws closer to the door the pair just exited, peering into the window.
A handful of dogs of all ages yip and bark, some playing by themselves while others tumble around and bite each other softly. Their kennels line one wall, while the other wall is filled with two housings; one for a molly cat and a litter of kittens and another empty one, the door slightly ajar.
Intrigued, Steve pushes the door open.
The dogs all perk up at his entrance, some standing and wagging their tails, ears high with attention, while others bark at him.
A woman rushes in from the back, a slightly resigned look on her face.
“C’mon you all,” you sigh, “You know that’s not the right way to greet somebody, especially if you wanna get adopted.”
Standing in front of some of the kennels, you stick your hands through the bars to nudge some chewing toys towards the more excited canines before turning to the other wall to attend to the kittens.
“Sorry, Mocha, let me put this down and your kitties can keep feeding.”
As you pull down a makeshift shade to block the front of the kennel, Steve realizes the missing feline from the other cubby is perched on your shoulder, tail swinging in satisfaction as it maintains perfect balance as you walk around.
“Hi, I’m so sorry,” you greet him, “Some of the puppies are still in training. And Major over there is a rescue; he’s been through it, so he’s still warming up.”
He follows your gesture towards a large German Shepherd standing on his hind legs.
Reaching up, you remove the cat from your shoulder and laugh when it hooks its claws into your shirt.
“Shadow, we have a guest,” you giggle, and Steve feels a lump in his throat. Negotiating the claws out of the fabric, you rest Shadow onto your arm. “This cat’s been here for a while. He’s followed me since he was a kitten, and he’s got this beautiful black coat, so I figured ‘Shadow’ was a great name. Isn’t he lovely?”
“Yeah,” he nods, “I’m Steve, by the way.”
“Oops, leave it to me to introduce the cat before myself,” you joke, tapping your forehead to point out your forgetfulness. You offer your hand as you give him your name. “It’s nice to meet you. I don’t want to be presumptuous, but I don’t think I’ve seen you before?”
“Oh, you wouldn’t have,” he waves you off, “I just got here today.”
“Well, welcome to Barber. What brings you to town?”
“Some long lost family.”
“Which one?” you ask, interest piqued. Then, your eyes widen bashfully, “Sorry, that was so invasive.”
“No, it’s alright,” Steve smiles, “I, um…do you know the Levinsons?”
“Oh Ari and Marcella! And Ari’s wife, of course. Yes, I love them. Marcella came in once and nearly snuck one of the kittens out in her jacket. Not that she was stealing from me, but she wanted to try to get it past her son. He wasn’t having it; though I think he would benefit from a kitten. He’s so gruff–oh my God, I talked way too much.”
The blond laughs and you think you might swoon. Setting Shadow down to wander around the shelter, you try to keep things professional. “So, what brings you in? Just here for some puppy therapy, looking around?”
“Well, if Ari doesn’t want a kitten in the cabin, I imagine he wouldn’t want a puppy,” Steve begins, looking at the dogs. “But I hear they’re good for…um…”
He pauses and you keep your posture, looking at him attentively as he tries to find his words.
“I’ve heard that adopting an animal could be good for a returning veteran.”
“Oh,” you comment, “Yes! I mean, that’s easy for me to say because I run the shelter; but really it’s easy to recommend a pet to anyone who is considering it. A father and son were just in here and the only thing that stopped me was the fact that the father was saying his son doesn’t tend to his chores. But I think with the right guidance, his son could be a good dog companion.
“In your case, though, I would say it could help you feel more adjusted. You’ll have something to do and a friend who will love you unconditionally. But, seeing that you just got to Barber…”
“It’s probably best to wait before I make a decision,” Steve finishes for you.
“Exactly,” you smile, “We’re on the same page.”
A few beats of silence pass over the two of you before you break it. “Would you like to still look around? You’re welcome to. I’m sure the dogs would be happy to interact with someone other than me.”
Taking you up on your offer, Steve accepts the bowl of treats you hand him and listens attentively as you specify that each puppy only gets one treat. “And don’t fall for the puppy eyes. You laugh now and think I’m joking but these guys are good at what they do.”
Approaching the first kennel, the chubby puppy with round ears perks up and yips, excited for an interaction. A rush of happiness fills Steve’s chest, helping him relax as he wedges two fingers between the bar to give the little guy a couple head scratches. Then, he reaches down into the bowl, holding the treat for the puppy to bite.
The puppy chews and Steve catches a glance at his description: suspected to be a mix of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Boxer, the puppy is a boy with a lot of energy. He’s only a few months old and was found wandering in the grocery store and begging for scraps at the deli.
“Well, your name makes sense, Salami,” Steve mutters, making eye contact and, sure enough, as you predicted, he’s begging for more treats. “Damn, she wasn’t kidding. I bet those guys at the deli gave you every scrap they could find before bringing you here.”
“Oh they did,” you respond from behind the counter. Looking up from your paperwork, your gaze switches between Steve and Salami. “You should’ve seen him. You think he has a soft tummy now, he was a complete pot belly when he was done over there.”
The two of you share a laugh as Steve tries to conjure the image in his head.
Every puppy has an anecdote to go with it, he finds out as he continues through the shelter. Some are happier than others, and it shows in your face as you tell the stories. Some even make your voice clog with emotion and you have to take a deep breath.
“Sorry,” you sigh, “That’s what, the fifth time? Gosh, I have got to get it together.”
“No, no, don’t worry about it,” he reassures you, then quickly changes the conversation to focus on the last puppy. “What about Willow? Anything about her?”
“She’s the sweetest little thing. She’s got to be some golden retriever mix, I just can’t put my finger on the other breed. But, anyway, she found by Ari, your…?”
“Nephew.”
“Your nephew–” You start to go with it, until it registers that Ari and Steve appear to be the same age. Your voice catches as the gears turn in your head.
“Long story, I’ll tell you after this one.”
“Got it,” you agree. “Anyway, Ari brought her in. She was hiding under a pile of lumber that he was about to deliver. Apparently she led him on a wild chase around the lumber yard. When he brought her in, he was all sweaty and grumpy.”
“I think he’s always grumpy.”
“Seems like it. I don’t know how his wife and mother deal with it. But, yeah, that’s Willow’s story. I figured since she was found in the lumber yard, I should name her after a type of tree. I also thought about just naming her ‘Timber’ or something but I liked Willow.”
“I like it, too,” Steve says, looking back at the puppy. When his eyes meet hers, he realizes she never stopped looking at him while he was speaking to you.
She gives him a dopey smile, tongue hanging out as she pants in excitement at the sight of him.
“Looks like you two are having a moment,” you remark.
It all falls away at the sound of his phone ringing, causing a cacophony of barks and howls to arise.
You try to calm the dogs down as Steve clumsily finds a surface to put the snack bowl down while answering the phone.
“Hi Steve!” Marcella trills on the other line. “I’m all ready to go!”
“Oh, okay, Marcella, I’ll see you in a few minutes.”
“Okay see you soon!”
The call ends there and you’re still trying to get the dogs to settle.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t think my ringer was on.”
“That’s okay, it happens,” you brush him off. “I’m glad to have met you! Hope to see you around. Or hope you come back for Willow.”
“Yeah, it was great to meet you too.” He lingers for a moment, wanting to say more but no words seem to be right. “Actually, before I go, could I take a picture of Willow?”
“Sure, do you want to hold her?”
His face shows his nerves before he can express them, so you quickly retract your statement and turn to bring her out of her kennel.
Propping her up in your arms, you do your best to get her to look towards Steve’s phone.
“Oh, you can smile, too. You’re in it.”
“Oh, okay!”
Your smile is bright, radiating a warmth that Steve doesn’t think he’s ever felt before.
When the picture is taken and it’s truly time for him to go, the memory of that grin makes it difficult to leave.
As Steve walks down the avenue, he types a message to Bucky.
Life in Barber is off to an interesting start. Met the sister-in-law, the nephew, and the niece-in-law. But I think my favorite is Willow (picture coming)
After sending the picture of you and the puppy, he sees Bucky immediately start typing, his response brief but effective.
Who’s the girl? 👀
She runs the shelter.
Anyone of interest?
Steve takes a moment to come up with a reply, triggering Bucky’s impatience.
Or maybe not yet.
But she seems like your type, so I think it would be a person of interest.
Rolling his eyes, Steve types a message simple enough to end the conversation there:
Maybe.

CHAPTER II: PERSONALITY’ TEST
“Can I come with you?” Sarco asked Jestel who’s ready to go to Idris with Jusarlie, Saine, and of course, Iolana.
“No, you have to teach today.” Jestel knows Sarco’s schedule.
“But they have to teach too?!” Sarco pointed at Jusarlie and Saine with his chin.
“They have substitutes. You don’t.” Jestel shortly ended it.
“Ricardo can—”
“Ricardo is still one of your students, Sarco.”
“Ugh! You’re annoying.” Sarco unexpectedly sulks.
“Isn’t our bet about Jusarlie? Why is Sarco becoming grumpier than him?” Saine chuckled.
“He’s very nosy.” Jestel shook his head. “Let’s go.”
They headed to Cairneye’s Mansion. Jestel had contacted Idris beforehand, saying that they would show up with a surprise guest. Cairneye’s Mansion is beautiful. It has a wide yard, beautifully decorated with flowers, bushes, fountain, and some statues. They head straight to Idris’s workshop that usually opens every day for people who need guidance. He made an exception today, because he’s feeling like he’s going to be exhausted after Jestel’s visit.
Stepping into the workshop, Iolana can’t help but observe her surroundings. The workshop gives her a cozy feeling. Warm lights, a tall armchair, some books that were left open on the desk, potions, herbs’ scent, incense that is burning in some spots, ritual candles. It’s just very homey. Judging by his workshop, Iolana has a feeling that Idris is a warm person.
“Papa, where are you?” Saine calls to his father.
Iolana continues to observe her surroundings again. She found a table full of framed pictures. Her eyes are staring at a picture of Saine and a guy, they’re smiling so sweetly with their eyes too. Saine is holding some flowers, Iolana assumed they’re canterbury bells based on how they look.
“I always have a panic attack whenever I heard you looking for me, Saine.” Saine’s father suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
“Can you stop scaring us, Uncle?” Jusarlie scoffed.
“Keep hating your own son and see where it’ll take you! Ugh!” Saine scoffed as well. Idris is such a cute silly man.
“It’s fun.” The said man smiles, his eyes are smiling too, looks like Saine got it from him. “Oh, hi! A girl. Human even. A sweet scented one.”
“Hi.” Iolana said shyly. Idris is incredibly handsome. His fashion taste is no match too. An elegant white top with black trousers, and even the touch of a man’s corset on his waist, or more like a wide belt? Iolana doesn’t know. Is it the outfit or his face? Iolana doesn’t know that either. Cairneye are so blessed, that’s the only thing that she knows. Best physical appearance combined with predicting future skill? Iolana immediately feels the need to have whatever they have. What a strong gene.
“Do a full test on her.” Jestel orders the older man around.
“Your name, Child?” Idris asked Iolana softly.
“Iolana Sterling.” Iolana is still shy.
“Holy Amadeus!” Idris is definitely surprised. “Welcome back!”
“Thank you…” The shier she gets, the more she hides behind Jusarlie. Jusarlie found it adorable, he feels warm because Iolana is already comfortable enough to seek for his protection.
“Alright, let’s see what you’ve got.” Idris nods and prepare his bowl.
“Papa, let’s use the pool.” Saine told his father. More like a warning, to be frank.
“Oh.” Idris immediately knew what his son meant. “Excuse me for asking this, but are you perhaps the last Sterling alive right now, Iolana?”
Iolana nods, “That’s correct.”
“Well, the pool it is!” Idris listened to his son and brought some bottles of potion with him. His feeling was right, he will be exhausted today.
They walked together to the pool, Idris took off his shoes and socks, then sat by the pool.
“Sit next to me, Iolana.” Idris told her with a smile on his face. How could she say no?
She took off her own shoes and socks. Saine, Jestel, and Jusarlie immediately looked away. 1700s is so funny. When she sits next to Idris, they’re looking at the pool again. Flustered.
“Have you… take off your socks?” Saine is confused. Under the dim light, Iolana looks like she’s still wearing her socks.
“She’s just almost as pale as Sarco and you, Saine.” Idris chuckled.
“Oh, I’m so sorry.” Saine is flustered again.
“Now, Iolana. Shall we begin?” Idris looks at Iolana again.
Iolana nods calmly, showing that she’s ready.
Idris begins the ritual. He poured two bottles of his potions into the pool. He touched the pool and stirred the water to the right. “Could you tell us what you see?”
“A dining table?” Iolana is confused.
“Can you tell us what’s on that table?”
“Five empty plates and one apple in the middle of the table.” Iolana explained.
“Five? Wow! Do you see any marks on the empty plates?” Idris asked again.
“Yes. Lion, snowflake, cat, sun, and a broken crown?” Iolana is so confused.
Oh, the four of them hit the mind links together.
Idris stirs the water to his right again. “Now, what do you see?”
“The apple cut in half. It’s flying over the plates, it looks confused.”
Idris laughs. It is indeed funny. He stirs the water again, “How about now?”
“It’s changing every second, I don’t know.” Iolana frowned.
“Do you want to explain it to us?”
“One second, it’s on the snowflake plate and the cat. Next second, the snowflake and the sun.”
“Ah! Does the apple have one frequent destination?”
“I don’t think so, the apple is really confused.”
Idris laughs again. “You’re adorable.” He stirs the water again.
Iolana doesn’t have to be told this time. “I see five love letters.”
“Okay, I can understand now. How about now?” Idris stirs the water to the right again.
“I see Saine crying.” Iolana still looks confused.
“Do you know why?” Idris is kind of surprised.
“I lied, it’s actually Jestel.” Iolana giggled. She’s in a goofy mood.
The four of them are dumbfounded. The last time Idris successfully lied to was when they were having pioneers’ dinner, and the very person who lied to him was Tearle Sterling. Yes, Iolana’s father himself.
“Why am I crying?” The said person is as confused.
“I’m not sure, you look very… devastated?” Iolana is concerned.
“That’s odd!” Idris stirs the water again.
“There’s a throne.” Iolana answered.
“Who sits on it?” Idris asked.
Iolana remains silent.
“Iolana? It’s okay, you can say it.” Jestel said softly.
Can’t you read her mind? Jusarlie asked Idris through mind links.
I swear on Roberto Cairneye, I can’t read this little girl at all, Idris answered.
“It’s Jestel.” Iolana finally answered. “…or me.”
They’re definitely surprised by that.
“And that’s also my omen of Sterling.” Idris giggled. “What a coincidence, right?”
“It’s just a possibility, right? I would never do that to Jestel.” Iolana is worried about her own future.
“Yes! Don’t worry, Iolana.” Idris’ smile is so reassuring. He stirs the water again. “Do you see something?”
“Few things. Sword, crown, herbs, map, books, potions.”
Saine’s jaw dropped at that one. Idris just nods, not wanting Iolana to feel uncomfortable.
“Before I explain your results, let me talk with Jestel first. Are you okay with that, Iolana?” Idris asked her.
Iolana nods at the question, “Can I wear my shoes back?”
“Of course, Iolana.” Idris chuckled, he dried his feet with a spell and put his shoes back. “Let’s go, Jestel.”
Iolana gets her feet out of the water, Jusarlie and Saine immediately look away again.
“Hey, Saine. Could you do the spell that your father just casted for himself?” Iolana asked at Saine.
“Is it okay for you—you know…” If Saine is a human, he’s blushing pink right now.
“Yeah, of course!”
“Excuse me, Iolana.” Saine said before looking towards Iolana. He swings his hand above Iolana’s bare feet while casting the spell.
“Wow, you should teach me that!” Iolana is amazed. “Thank you, Saine.”
“N-no problem.” Saine looks away again.
“Just to let you know, it’s okay to look at me. I grew up being okay with my feet on display at home.”
“It’s just… we feel like a pervert…” Saine admitted.
“I wonder what’s the limit of dressing here in Krashoviel.” Iolana laughed. “I’m done. You are safe to look.”
Jusarlie and Saine hesitantly look toward Iolana again. They feel relieved when her feet are fully covered with her long skirt and shoes again.
“The girls are usually covering their feet, that’s why we act that way earlier.” Jusarlie explained.
“I want to be controversial and show my ankle to the streets.” Iolana giggled.
“No, no, no!” Jusarlie and Saine panicked. “Arms are okay, but ankle? Wow, that’s pornographic.”
“That’s confusing.” Iolana nods. “What about chest area? How far can the neckline go?”
“Chest area is okay, as long as the breasts are not like… full on display? Ankles, however, is a big no.” Saine explained. “I feel like invading your privacy earlier when casting that spell.”
Iolana laughed. Krashoviel is so funny for her, when it’s just her who doesn’t even leave her house before going to Krashoviel. She’s lucky she’s easy-going and pretty.
“Drink this, don’t you feel tired?” Saine hands her a glass of questionable drink.
“Not really.” Iolana accepts the glass. “Oh, what is this?”
She smelled the drink, and it smelled like strawberry! She drinks it without hesitation until the last drop. “I like it! What is this? Strawberry juice?”
Curiosity kills the cat!
“Our bloods.” Saine grins.
“Oh?” Iolana is concerned. “What would that do? Whose blood?”
“Three of us. It can give you strength! And you can summon us anytime you want when you need it. You can also talk to us through telepathy.” Saine explained excitedly.
“Summon you? How?” Iolana is interested in this.
“Just say our name and say you need us. For example, Jusarlie I need you.” Jusarlie explained further.
“Oh! I get it.” Iolana nods. “But why? Isn’t that… personal? Don’t you think I need to gain your trusts first?”
“You already did.”
It feels too fast for Iolana, but she accepts it as it is. She’s grateful that they care about her a lot, but are they?
—
“Jestel, that was the most entertaining reading that I ever did. I thanked you for that.” Idris is giggling non-stop.
“Elaborate, please.” Jestel is frustrated.
“You will fight your best friends.” Idris started off so strong. “You, Saine, Jusarlie, Sarco, and Hiael.”
“Why?” Jestel asked, still oblivious.
“You’re going to fall in love with Iolana. All of you.” Idris stated. “Some of you already did, I checked my son and he’s already blooming for her.”
“That doesn’t make any sense.” Jestel shook his head.
“Love never makes any sense, Jestel.” One thing about Idris is that he hits hard with his words, accidentally or not. “Especially the throne for her vamp host. You’re going to fight really dirty for that. I can see it.”
“Nonsense.” Jestel scoffed.
“I won’t help you if you cry someday.” Idris threatened him. Scares him for sure, where will Jestel run to for advice if not Idris?
“What should I do about this?” Jestel is stressed out.
“Accept it.” Idris calmly told him.
“What can I do to make her choose me?”
“That remains a mystery.” Idris doesn’t know either. “I’m more surprised you’re not bringing up anything about the throne. You already fell for her, don’t you?”
“No. I just trust her.” Jestel explained himself.
“You gave her your blood, along with Saine and Jusarlie.” Idris points that out.
“She’s a human, Idris. I just want to protect her.”
“Sure, sure. Protect her. When we all know it’s special and intimate.” Idris mocked him.
“It’s not that intimate.”
“Imagine she chose Sarco as her vamp host.” Idris immediately puts a scenario.
“Fine, it is intimate.”
“Best of luck, Jestel.” Idris taps his shoulder a few times. “It’s going to be anything but easy.”
“She’s not capable of wiping out the whole Sinflame, right? She’s lovely, she would never do that.” Jestel asked Idris for reassurance.
“Not yet. However, if I was you… I would never get on her wrong side. She’s a complicated girl.”
—
“Your father is so majestic.” Iolana admitted. Truly smitten by Saine’s father.
“You think I’m ugly?” Saine acts like he has been hurt.
“I never said that.” Iolana is still giggling over Idris.
“Don’t feed his ego, Iolana.” Jusarlie scoffed.
“Get over it, Jusarlie. She thinks I’m handsome.” Saine is being cocky right now.
“Your father reminds me of a pine tree.” Iolana sudden words silenced them.
Jusarlie and Saine is so confused. There’s no way she just said that like it’s a normal thing to do.
“I can’t believe we lose you to Sarco’s species.” Saine faked a sigh.
“Species is insane.” Jusarlie laughs. “Why a pine tree?”
“Tall, look good, calming, I don’t know? He reminds me of it.”
“Bloody hell, she really is a Sarco’s species.” Jusarlie couldn’t believe it.
“Why Sarco?” Iolana is curious.
“He’s odd. Just like you. I don’t mean it in a bad way, it’s creative. Sometimes we just… don’t understand.” Saine explained. “He did that a lot, saying I look like the lamp near south’s stairs and so on.”
“You should show me the lamp later.” Iolana is invested now.
“Hey, small question, but if you don’t want to answer it’s fine. What happened to your hair? Did you get punished?” Jusarlie suddenly hits Iolana with a personal and nosy question.
Iolana expects this with her a little bit over the shoulder-length hair. It is unusual for a girl to have hair that short, at least in their era.
“Well, it was an accident. It got cut by my brother when we were practicing sword, so my mom cut it all to this length.” Iolana explained. “I’m waiting for it to be long again. It’s troublesome, I can’t tie it properly, yet it’s annoying enough to be left undone like this.”
Jusarlie and Saine nod in unison.
Idris and Jestel went back to the pool area. Jestel looks stressed, while Idris looks happy. What a weird combination.
“Iolana, do you mind if I ask you to lend us your power?” Idris asked.
“Huh? I have power?” Iolana is confused again.
“Bigger than you think.” Idris giggled. “We are also testing it out.”
“Sure, if it’s for a good reason…” Iolana is totally unsure.
“We are going to search for Jestel’s long lost brother, Holstein.” Idris explained briefly.
“But I don’t know what he looks like?” Iolana is still questioning him.
“You will, if you succeed.” Idris smiles warmly. “Would you do it?”
Iolana nods after a few seconds of hesitation. She sits between Idris and Jestel, making half of a circle.
“Saine, Jusarlie, let’s go.” Idris points at the empty seats.
“You need us as well?” Jusarlie questioned but obeyed.
“You were just doing nothing, so why not?” Idris is an entertaining man for sure.
They held each other’s hands. For the first time ever, Jestel could understand what the romance books were talking about. The electricity and the butterflies, he feels them now.
“I seek upon Holstein Sinflame whereabouts,” as Idris said those words, there is a big cloud forming over Cairneye’s mansion. Thunder begins to growl, lightning begins to show.
They close their eyes, focusing on the name Holstein Sinflame.
They begin to see a vision. A palace, but not Krashiovel’s palace.
“Whose vision is this?” Jestel asked.
“Iolana.” Idris answered.
“Have you found the girl?” Holstein asked them.
“She killed herself along with her father, Your Highness.”
“Did you see her face? Is it really her?” Holstein asked again.
“No, but there is no way she could run away. We’ve blocked all the access.”
“Tearle is the smartest vampire that I’ve ever met. She could be in Krashoviel now with my stupid brother.” The Prince of Slevado is furious.
“That would be the same as suicide, her blood smells so fucking sweet.” Holstein chuckled. “Where is she?”
“Holstein, you must come back to Krashoviel and fetch that girl.”
“Unnecessary, I think she’s gone.”
The vision turns black again, the clouds are nowhere to be found, the thunder is no longer roaring.
“Wow, he’s a traitor.” Saine couldn’t believe what he just saw.
Idris was the only one laughing, he couldn’t contain it. “It’s so funny, you’re swapping brothers.”
Iolana holds back her giggle, she doesn’t want to be rude.
“Thank you, Iolana.” Idris has stopped laughing. “We wouldn’t make it without you, we’ve tried for hundred years to get a vision of Holstein.”
“I didn’t do that much, I’m glad I could help.” Iolana is still oblivious about her real power, buried deep down under that human form.
“Here’s your test result, make sure you read it alone without them lurking.” Idris intentionally whispered loudly.
“I will lurk.” Saine smiles.
“Have some class.” Idris faked a sigh.
“We’ll head out, Idris. Thank you for your service.” Jestel stood up, the others followed.
“Bye, Papa.” Saine waves at his father.
“Don’t come back.”
“You see? He’s not as handsome as you think, Iolana.” Saine used that as a way to show her his father’s teasing habit.
“Forgivable if he has that elf type of face.” Iolana giggled.
“Aw, you flustered me.” Idris chuckled at Iolana. She has a sense of humor too!
“Let’s go.” Jestel is not having it. Well, at least now he knows that he truly fell for her.
—
Saine is being told to look after Iolana while the others held emergency meeting for the third time today, of course he enjoys this! They’re currently putting Iolana’s clothes into the wardrobe.
“I think you have good eyes for apparels. I want your wardrobe.” Saine adores Iolana’s taste in fashion. “Ah, the trousers! Where did you get these?”
“Come on, Saine. Those are just my casual and practice clothes. I got it from my human maids.” Iolana chuckled. “I love my pretty dresses, but I barely get to wear it.”
“You will wear it more often now, there are so many events that we usually have to attend.” Saine informed her. “Ah, you don’t have any ball gowns! Do you want to go to Charson? You’ll need some gowns for royal ball and Jestel’s birthday.”
“Is it far?” Iolana asked.
“Not really, but we need to cover your scent.” Saine chuckled. “I’ll put some spell on you. It could last for two hours, at least.”
—
“Don’t play with me, Jestel. What do you mean Holstein is a traitor?” Sarco shook his head.
“That’s what we saw.” Jusarllie admitted.
“They must’ve brainwashed our Holstein,” Odelia, the queen on the throne, scoffed. Clearly annoyed.
“Hiael betrayed his nation by his own will, it is not an impossibility if Holstein ever do the same.” Idris shrugged his shoulder. “However, this Sterling girl…”
“What Sterling girl?” Raphael, the queen’s brother, is shocked.
“She came with this letter.” Jestel gave them the letter that Tearle wrote.
“She’s back? Here? In Krashoviel?” Sullivan, the queen’s father, is puzzled.
“She could end your bloodline.” Idris said without any burden.
“I’d rather be dead than to fight back, it’s no use.” Sullivan chuckled. “Oh, Sterling.”
“Are Sterling that dangerous?” Wilhelmina, Jestel’s niece, is too young to watch how frightening Sterling can be back then in the war field.
“I’m really scared of them, take that information as you wish.” Sullivan said to his great-granddaughter.
“Oh!” Wilhelmina is surprised. “Is she beautiful?”
“Very.” Jestel answered. “I would do anything for her.”
“In front of your queen aunt is just insane, Jestel.” Idris laughed at his son.
“I don’t blame him.” Jusarlie stands with him.
“They fell for her charm,” Sarco scoffed. “I would ne—”
“Careful, now.” Idris warned Sarco. “You will fall for her too. I saw it.”
“Who else?” Odelia asked her son.
“Saine and Hiael. The five of them will fight to be her vamp host.” Idris informed them.
“This is ridiculous, let’s just kill that girl.” Raphael is furious. “She will tear us apart.”
“If Sinflame is no longer worthy of the throne, then just let it be.” Odelia is calmer than the others.
“What on earth are you saying, Odelia?” Raphael is getting more furious. What an old grumpy man.
“Grandma Odelia is not wrong.” Wilhelmina is against his father.
“Father, look at this—” Raphael seeks Sullivan’s support.
“I’m not going to say anything.” Sullivan is busy cleaning each of his gemstones.
“That girl won’t do it by herself, right? Who are the potential traitors?” Raphael asked Idris.
“Have you ever done a friendly practice with Tearle?” Idris questioned him back.
“No, why?”
“Then you are not in the place to say that.” Sullivan makes it clear. “One Sullivan equals five Sinflame. Train her as hard as you can, give her the best facility, and don’t you dare to let other nations have her.”
“Yes, Grandpa.” Jestel nods.
“When will you sit on the throne, Jestel?” Odelia asked, she’s tired of the kingdom’s bullshits.
“As soon as possible, I’m still preparing myself.” Jestel feels a heavy weight on his shoulders. He can’t control his feelings toward Iolana, that is what bothers him the most right now.
—
“Mr. Cairneye! Oh, my vamp, close the shop!” The receptionist panicked when he saw Saine smiling at him.
The workers immediately temporarily close the shop, the other guests who are waiting outside are getting used to it now. Must be one of the pioneers making some sudden appearance.
“How can we help you, Your Highness?” The shop workers are ready to serve him.
“I’d like some ball gowns for this cute little girl.” Saine pushed Iolana slightly.
“Of course, we’ll measure her.” Two of the workers quickly measured Iolana, while the others asked Saine about the gown’s details.
“What’s your favorite color, Iolana?” Saine questioned her. “You can name five.”
“White and pink. As for the others, I’ll leave it to you. I trust you.” Iolana is never failed to make Saine feels so… flustered.
“White, pink, blue, red, and purple.” Saine told the worker.
“Which shade, Your Highness?”
“Actually… make it six. White, violet, navy, sky blue, maroon, and pink. Maybe a bold pink like this one? Iolana, do you like it?” Saine asked her again.
“Loves it.” Iolana stares adoringly at the color that Saine just showed her. It’s almost fuchsia, just a little less bold.
“Pardon me, Your Highness. She looks unfamiliar to me, is she a new citizen? I’ve never seen her before.” Jeremy asked Saine, trying to be as polite as possible.
“Yes, she is. She’s Iolana Sterling, Jeremy.”
“S-Sterling, Your Highness?”
“She has a perfect body proportion.” One of the measurement workers said to the other.
“Thank you.” Iolana whispered to them.
“We apologize, we didn’t mean to…”
“It’s okay. I love your compliment. You’re being genuine.” Iolana smiles. “I’m done, Saine.”
She walked to Saine as he smiled at her proudly.
“Payment should be here by tomorrow morning. Thank you for your service, Jeremy.” Saine informed the owner of that grand boutique.
“Always happy to be at your service, Your Highness and Lady Sterling. Thank you for trusting us.” The workers and Jeremy bow a little to show their respect and devotion towards the pioneers.
They walked out of Charson and went home instantly. After they got back to Iolana’s room, Saine seemed confused.
“Are you not going to ask anything about them referring me as… you know?”
“Jusarlie told me about the royal family’s tree. I was a little surprised, I’m so sorry I interacted with you so casually.” Iolana admitted, feeling a little guilty.
“No, no! Keep being casual, we’re equal.” Saine quickly reassured her. “No one dares to challenge a Sterling, not even the oldest Sinflame alive. You’re still a part of the pioneers.”
Pioneers.
It sounds incredibly weird for Iolana, but deep down in her heart… it feels just right.

May Prompts (23) Apology
The Luckiest Girl in the World (chapter23)
Summary: Rosie shares a surprise with her parents and uncle. All of them have different thoughts about this unexpected development, and silent negotiations are carried out.
Twenty-Three Years Old
I knew that Papa not fully understood my reason for studying international politics and data, but to his credit he didn’t for one second try to convince me to give it another thought and opt for something science related instead. Dad was just relieved that I’d finally had found a path to walk, after several failed attempts. Uncle Myc, well he tried to hide how utterly pleased he was with my choice, but by now I knew him well enough to read the signs. Truth be told, said signs weren’t that subtle.
“Bien choisi ma chérie,”he beamed at me, while Papa scowled at him.
“Merci oncle,” I retorted. “I can’t wait to start this and go to Paris.”
The three-year BA degree was taught by The University of London Institute in Paris. We would be taught in English, but if we had an A level in French, we could also take French courses. I’d learned French in school for years, and uncle Myc and I often conversed in French when uncle Greg wasn’t around.
I think it’s needless to say that my security and comfort in France was well taken care of. Papa and uncle Myc had a conversation using their eyes only when I spilled the beans. Dad knew exactly what was going on and went to make tea while negotiations were carried out. Once the brothers were satisfied, uncle Myc took out his phone and sent several texts or emails. By now, I knew it’ll be futile to pester any of them of what was going on. I was just relieved that no one had tried to talk me out of it, making me feel uncertain or guilty for leaving the country; actually, moving out of my childhood home.
My reasons for choosing this subject were multifaceted. I’d always enjoyed learning facts, obscure and otherwise, about different countries and cultures. Having had a relatively unorthodox upbringing, containing all sorts of people, played a big part too. The cherry on top was that the school was abroad. Nana’s tales of her experiences overseas and how educating it is to have lived some time in another country and society, had always seemed enticing to me.
***
The university was situated close to the Invalides and the Seine, while my lodgings were in the Charonne area in the 11th arrondissement on a cosy cobble street, with a nearby metro station. My landlady, Marguerite Vachon was one of uncle Myc’s acquaintances, from where, I still have no idea.
Marguerite preferred that I used her given name instead of the formal, Madame Vachon.
“Je ne suis pas ancient,” was her favourite line and reminded me quite a lot of Nana.
“I am not ancient, dear,” was a statement Nana had used every so often.
Marguerite was a petite and elegant woman. Her hair was cut in a bob, coloured black with a few red stripes. I never saw her without lipstick or makeup. She always wore bespoke dresses and high heeled shoes. I deduced that she was far more than a landlady. When I left for school in the morning, I could hear her sing or talk on the phone, and when I returned, she always opened her door and inquired about my day.
“She’s clearly spying for Mycroft,” Papa’s voice told me.
And there was something about her, which I couldn’t put my finger on. Something mysterious, secret, perhaps even dangerous.
***
It seemed like Marguerite had my schedule memorised. Not that I’d given her the information, but when she slipped, I got my suspicions confirmed. To be fair, it wasn’t slipping per se. She couldn’t have known that class was dismissed early that day.
Luckily, I spotted her and was able to hide behind a wall before she saw me. I’d almost missed her, because she wasn’t wearing her normal dress and high heels, but red trousers, a white and blue-striped jumper, and white trainers. Instead of one of her posh handbags, she had a dark blue canvas bag diagonally draped over her chest.
Papa had taught me a few tricks when it came to the fine art of following people without being discovered. I’ve never had much use of them obviously, but now I saw an opportunity. How I would explain this and apologise if I was caught, never crossed my mind.
I was sceptical when Marguerite walked to the metro station, but I was able to get into the same carriage as her, and it seemed that she had no idea she was being followed. She got off three stops later and walked in the direction of the big Père-Lachaise cemetery.
A fitting location for obscure and shady affairs.
Marguerite knew where she was going, walking briskly but not hurried. I had walked the premises several times before and knew where she was headed when I saw the grand tomb of Sir Richard Wallace, the British baronet who contributed millions to the Parisian poor during the Siege of Paris in the early 1870s.
This reeked of another posh Brit I knew.
When Marguerite had placed a folder by the tomb and another woman picked it up five minutes later, I had a hard time keeping myself composed. The woman picking up the folder was the French equivalent of Anthea.
I sent uncle Myc a text when both women were out of sight.
Thanks for keeping track on me, but this thing is like being part of a French noir film. You can tell Papa I think you’re both growing sentimental, and I demand an apology!

...everyone in team strq keeps secrets of some kind. qrow had his semblance (and shapeshifting, kinda), raven's got being the spring maiden and her reasons for leaving, summer her mission (that i don't think she was being fully honest about with anyone).
so what does taiyang "i've got to... look after some things" xiao long have?
i don't think it's simply his refusal to talk about raven (and possibly summer), because it doesn't quite fit with the rest; it's not about him or what he's doing, if that makes sense. he could talk about everything and all, and it would not bring the answers desired.
and i do think he has a secret (or two) just for himself. something that possibly even his teammates don't know about; qrow says "there were a lot of those back in our day, but" in reference to the possibility that ozpin knew something about summer's mission that qrow and tai didn't, opening a room for oz secrets that weren't shared across the board; "still, who knows what he may have hidden from us over the years." <- that's an open door right there.
but my main reason for thinking so comes from 'known by its song' and raven casting doubt not only on qrow but tai as well on leaving things out, which seems slightly odd considering how... uninvolved tai seems to be in all things oz & salem in the present day.
"well, [qrow's] never given me a reason to doubt him before" -> "that doesn't mean those reasons don't exist."
"your uncle qrow and i didn't attend beacon to become huntsmen, we did it to learn how to kill huntsmen. daddy and uncle left that part out, hm?"
"you said tai told you all about my semblance. well, i doubt he ever told you what oz did to my brother and me." <- this, especially. tai talked, but he said nothing about oz-related stuff. not when he slipped up about what ruby did at the beacon tower. not when yang left, likely knowing she (and ruby) were getting involved in this stuff. even when he talks with qrow, he's being vague with his wording.
it reminds me of this quote from the official companion book: "to me, taiyang is the ultimate dad. he doesn't spend a lot of time talking about his emotions, but he's been through a lot. i think about men who went to war and experienced horrible things, but when they came back to support their families they never spoke a word about it. they took all that to the grave."
his team is full of secrets and he's got to look after some things (<- plural!!!) and if he's not the dragon guarding the treasure, i don't know what he is.
#rwby#taiyang xiao long#you thought it was kevin the wyvern 'guarding' the relic#but nay! it is the blond sunshine of team strq (and his dog)

Ultimative Rom post
I was going to post my headcanons, but this turned out to be basically a chronological sequence of facts about her life, almost a biography (as always, I am sorry ).
Thank you, @pyro-madder for the opportunity to finally talk about Rom! I hope you will enjoy that!
Rom's father was a physician and biologist who researched the fauna of the Yharnam counties. He was one of the "old school" doctors - a graduate of Byrgenwerth, a conservative.
So how about the family drama? Here we go. At first he had an affair with a poor woman named Aglaya, Micolash's mother. But after learning of her pregnancy, he disappeared from her life and began a new affair, from which Rom was born. Rom spent a few years of happy childhood with her parents, and then both died in a fire. That's how Rom ended up in an orphanage.
Rom has been very curious since childhood. She was often scolded by her mother for eating grass and flowers xd And one time she even ate a bug… No evil intentions, it was just her way of exploring the world!
She has one single photo left from her parents, capturing her in a cute dress and her mom and dad. She got her red curls from her dad.
Rom's orphanage had strict discipline and focus on the old Yharnam religion (I don't want to openly call this religion Catholicism because it's not :0 But the vibes are generic. Reminds me of the movie adaptation of the novel Jane Eyre, where little Jane gets to go to school). But her extraordinary intelligence helped her stay afloat amidst cruelty and other people's malice, and then her relatives showed up - an uncle and aunt close to her dead father.
They helped Rom to enroll in Byrgenwerth, as the girl showed talent and curiosity for science and medicine. After spending a short time with her relatives, she studied the entire home library, and also at family evenings talked about her observations of the flora and fauna around their estate.
In Byrgenwerth, Rom was quiet at first. She endured ridicule for her red curls and overweight figure. A few generations ago, though, such a figure had been valued more than any other in Yharnam - it showed a healthy body and the ability to bear children.
Almost immediately Rom had a friend, Yurie, a girl who wore a male uniform. They studied at different faculties - Yurie aspired to become a chemist. And it was Yurie who had started this friendship, too. Rom didn't know, but despite her cold temperament, Yurie fell in love with her almost at first sight and was eager to protect her. And she was good at it! But she couldn't express her feelings. Therefore, she was often silent, rebuking Rom or resentful.
At first, Rom became friends with another young man. It seemed to her that she was making friends. The son of a wealthy family, an ambitious historian and future doctor, Laurence, with whom they had once teamed up to pass an exam. But Laurence quickly saw her as a competitor, and also experienced unwanted sympathy, and became her biggest bully. And created for her very many unpleasant situations, shameful and ugly. Her skirt fell off in front of everyone, her chair got dirty, rumors started, and many, many other things that silly children like to do (even if they are adults) :0
But the insults from Laurence allowed her to meet another victim of his taunts. A young man confined to a wheelchair, pale and seemingly almost dead - Caryll. Frustrated and genuinely hating Laurence, Caryll felt sympathy for Rom. So did she for him. This allowed the two to grow close. Gradually, an affection grew between her and Caryll. Rom even felt in love. One night the two of them spent together, secretly, on a Byrgenwerth balcony. They tried to kiss and tried to become a couple. But such feelings are not for Caryll, he loves differently. During that night they shared almost everything - life story, troubles, resentments, joys, secrets, and Caryll even told her about his dreams, how he often has nightmares related to multi-armed monsters (*wink wink*). They became best friends, and in fact, almost family.
Rom and Caryll also found a friend in the main comforter of all students, the librarian Damian. According to my headcanons, Damian is a former graduate of Byrgenwerth and a failed doctor. He was unable to start work as a doctor, and so he asked Master Willem to set him up at his alma mater. Willem valued him as an apprentice, so sometimes Damian got essays of Willem's written works, and those related to the research of the catacombs of Pthumeru once fell into Micolash's hands carelessly… But that's another story xd In the library Damian could do what he loved most - sorting, record keeping and, most importantly, guardianship and supervision. And there was always tea and his cookies available in his library.
There was also another man who had studied at Byrgenwerth. Unfashionable and strange to everyone, but too independent, proud and cunning to be an object of ridicule (In fact, Lawrence was very interested in him). Micolash. He and Rom talked, saw each other, though they were in different faculties, but sometimes found themselves in classes together. They were good together, comfortable. They were both drawn to each other's intellect. And… Romantic feelings were born in Micolash's heart. (Sorry, I really love love and everything related to it, in my stories crushes and feelings are VERY IMPORTANT xD It's my way of exploring characters). But her red curls kept reminding him of something he couldn't guess himself. He began to search for the cause of his embarrassment. Started looking for Rom's papers, found her last name. He found her parents' names on the paperwork. And the name of her father awakened a memory in his mind! Micolash found out about their kinship by breaking into Rom's dorm room while she was away and searching all her things. One picture in her things was enough for him to realize everything. He was hurt and offended because the only person who had attracted his mind and heart turned out to be not just a relative, but the daughter of the man who had once abandoned his mother, leaving her and little Micolash to live in terrible conditions, and also making the woman suffer for him for the rest of her life.
(Forgive me for the Santa Barbara xD)
Over the course of their studying, the relationship between them all only grew stronger. Caryll and Rom had become literally inseparable! Yurie was still wooing Rom, but from afar, without talking to Caryll. She wanted to look strong and tough in Rom's eyes, but she didn't realize that she didn't realize it. Rom had gotten prettier over the years, and that was helped a lot by Caryll supporting her and forcing her to eat food so she wouldn't get physically exhausted, bailing her out of her depression. By this point Caryll had already suffered a small clinical death, and Willem had injected him with a portion of the Great Ones' blood as an experiment. He had already started dreaming about the Runes, hearing voices, and had gotten quite a bit of insight! He even changed his wheelchair to a cane - his legs could move, but only weakly! And only worked when injected with a dose of blood. Rom became more independent and began to engage in debates with Laurence during lectures and outside of school. And even managed to shame him once (piquing his interest even more). Rom was gradually transforming into a grown woman - her body was transforming, as was her mindset. She became one of Willem's favorite students - demonstrating theories on the effects of flowers and plants on perception, as well as (without knowing it herself), revealing the unusual nature of Lumenflowers. Also during this time Damian and Micolash became a couple, and Damian couldn't devote much time to the students besides him. But he and Rom still kept exchanging things and stuff - like scented soap, cloth, and other household trifles.
Laurence had changed, too, and so had Rom. And he had gotten away from the "spoiled boy" image with what Gehrman had helped him by becoming somewhat of a father figure to him. Laurence looked forward to the future, communicated with Willem and promoted the theory of the Blood, studying it with Willem himself. Thanks to Laurence also, one day Willem took the students on a field trip to the catacombs, where Laurence was able to collect even more samples. At this time, Willem also starts working with a rebellious knight from Cainhurst, who actively helps with the exploration of the catacombs in exchange for shelter and organizes his own little order, which he named after the warrior-soldiers in Cainhurst and one of his old mentors (Logarius! I'll write about him later for sure! In another huge as Bayle post of headcanons).
There goes a visit to Fishing Hamlet! Which had already been destroyed by the hunters, Maria and Gehrman were already here, as well as Willem and Logarius. The students visited what was left. But were able to see the corpse of the Great One. And it affected each of them in its own way! But it was Kos's parasites that interested Rom. She spent a long time rummaging among the snails and worms, examining and studying. She even found the corpse of a female snail in a pile of rot. And something was keeping her in suspense. Everyone around her was grieving, and she couldn't do it. She just couldn't feel the bitterness and fear and remained calm. She felt interest and excitement. She felt not the pain of Kos, but the remnants of her spirit and desire to live that were leading her to the sea!
Laurence contemplates a future marriage, the first project of treatment with purified blood appears, and the study of sea water. And… He has a weakness for Rom, who absolutely does not care about him! He saw in her, finally, not a rival, but a beautiful young woman with a brilliant mind and extraordinary character. He even offered her an engagement, it would be beneficial to both of them. But Rom refused (and Caryll showed him a middle finger lol).
Rom hates direct eye contact. She also has a hard time understanding irony and sarcasm - she takes everything literally. Rom is great with facts and direct arguments! She's also a perfectionist. Sometimes she felt like she was forcing herself to express emotions and doing it "too" artistic? She really wanted to let others know how she felt because she was considered "ice cold" at the shelter. (Yes, she is autistic. And I haven't yet consulted with my friends who have autism about how Rom might feel. And I've only used what I've read myself (or seen) to create it. But if you disagree with my view of her as autistic person, please text me and tell me what's wrong, I need corrections)
Rom met Gehrman at Willem's request (much to Laurence's delight). And she also met the huntress Maria, originally from Cainhurst. The four spent one evening in his workshop, and Rom enjoyed listening to stories of his life. Actually, she and Maria found common ground too - with the help of blood gems. However, Maria always felt uncomfortable around Rom. Under Rom's gaze, it was hard for her to say anything, she felt guilty and ashamed of what she was doing. Rom didn't understand her feelings, but she realized that something was wrong with her.
Opening of the Research Hall. Rom was supposed to work there as a doctor. But positions and jobs don't interest her much, she cares about research. She works with parasites and injects seawater into herself. Rom researches growing eyes on people, and here she is helped by Caryll, keeping an eye on her health. Rom gradually becomes a patient of her own free will, and lives on the upper levels of the Research Hall, in a laboratory, alone, visited only by her doctor.
Rom's hair is almost impossible to put together in a neat bundle - it will always stick out in different directions. Despite the fact that she and Micolash are complete opposites, they have a lot of similarities - those protruding locks of hair, the frown, the passion for unethical research lol
Laurence, already a vicar, Willem's assistant, begins now to care for her openly. His work takes up all his time, but he carves out hours to check on Rom and ask the doctors what is happening to her. He sends her small gifts and food and tries to visit her. And… She reciprocates. I can't count how many shitpost sketches I have in my head about this. Because Caryll was horrified when he found out that Rom had forgiven Laurence for all his wrongdoings and become his lady of the heart!
The Tomb Prospectors under the command of Ludwig, a knight from the southern lands, are hard at work for the Church. Olek, Gremia and Damian are among his charges. Tomb Prospectors discover the first Augur of Ebrietas, and Laurence, as a gift (giving her food for thought, so to say) gives him to Rom to examine. Augur lives in Rom's terrarium and crawls on her hands. She discovers that it gives off vibrations similar to those she heard in the Fishing Hamlet. And she discovers that Augur has the ability to leave burns on her skin. These burns are treated by Caryll and kissed by Laurence.
Yurie also works at the Research Hall. But Rom won't let her near her. And the girl's broken heart is healed by another lady doctor of the Research Hall named Madlene (And in the future it will be Imposter Iosefka)! Also, Yurie picks up her little nephew named Edgar from the orphanage :^)
Micolash ignores his sister. He is solely researching Saint Adeline and making her his own test subject (At her own will). From the moment he found out about their sibling bond, Micolash and Rom have been distant from each other and even feuding. He now considers Rom "unhinged" and "stupid" because of her research methods. He believes that trying everything on her body is barbaric and a waste of resource.
Tomb Prospectors dubbed Rom a "hottie" when they saw her with Damian! :D
Also Rom is incredibly tall among all other women! (Except for Maria maybe who is also tall) Rom is 6′ 0″, and while Laurence 5' 5" lol... They are quite a funny couple. But Laurence never complains. Actually he has the best view when he talks to her.
Rom is the first to bandage her eyes to discover her new vision. And is the first to start seeing "more". Caryll helps her settle into life with the insight lol. Her bandaged eyes will become the basis for the Choir hat.
Rom and Laurence go on dates when she manages to get out of her research center and he manages to get out of the Church. But Rom is more interested in discussing augurs than romance, and Laurence has to temper his own passionate feelings for her each time. Still, the two gradually come to bodily intimacy. Laurence also becomes very caring. He feels like a child with her, and suddenly begins to show guardianship and attentiveness.
Rom studies the Augurs and hears their call. She learns from their singing about the "daughter of the stars". And builds a theory about the sacredness of the mother-child bond.
She and St. Adeline had seen each other several times. And they saw each other as rivals - both aspiring to the Great Ones in their own measure. Adeline wished to have a child, she heard voices in her head assuring her that Kos was blessing mothers and families, and that would set Rom on a future idea >>>
Rom makes a plan for her own pregnancy. She wouldn't admit it, but she sees Laurence as her instrument. Her research takes her head over heels, and takes her very much away from the people closest to her. In an attempt to learn more about the Great Ones, she even rummages into Caryll's papers, waiting until he falls asleep to check what he has in his researches. Rom realizes Kos's mother nature, and tries to make contact, again using only herself for the experiment. And this idea she shares with Willem, who is proud of Romina and supportive, helping to plan for all future consequences. He becomes her new "family". And now she gets secrets from her two favorite people, Laurence and Caryll.
She does become pregnant after a night with Laurence. She hears much, much more. And one night a call comes to her, a real crying cry for help. She hears Ebrietas. (Laurence is the last to learn of this news. But he is still happy and hopes that they can become a family)
Ebrietas, discovered by Tomb Prospectors in the catacombs of Isz, is frightened and confused. She screams into the void, and Rom takes her signal as a beacon. Several Tomb Prospectors die in the battle with Ebrietas, and the survivors experience their first doubts about what they are doing. The monster that tore and trampled their companions is elevated to "Holy" by the Church, and no one mentions the dead so as not to taint the image of the new icon. Damian renounces here the teachings of the Church. But despite his resentment towards Rom, because she doesn't seem to care about his grief, he maintains a friendship with her, albeit a weak one.
Speaking of how Ebrietas ended up in the Church, or rather, in a large cave under the Upper Cathedral Ward. I think it was simply that there were ancient ruins under the Cathedral District that Ibraitas managed to "summon" to. Honestly, I have no idea how else she could have been transported xd Crawling through the catacombs and the city? Nuh uh. Teleport? Maybe. Or summoning with ritual and stuff in a certain place where the voices and whispers are particularly strong.
Rom is known as "weird" in the Healing Church, and it is known to quite a few that she is the vicar's sweetheart. Logarius is very judgmental of the vicar for allowing a woman taking up his precious time. But Laurence is a good enough leader to not let him talk about it much xd
Around this point, Micolash already has intentions of leaving the Church and establishing his own line of study of the Great Ones. Damian is absolutely on his side, for his encounter with Ebraitas has left a wound on his soul, as well as a deep aversion to the Church's perception of the Great Ones. They both choose Kos as their beacon, separating her from the rest of the Great Ones. Damian and Rom are forced to cut off their friendship for good.
The Choir was founded! And Rom becomes its idol and prophet (My version of Rom in the transparent blue dress is already relevant here. This dress was created for her by Laurence, or rather, designed for her by him). He decorated it with stars. Rom didn't do any more research. She only broadcast Ebrietas' will and communicated with her. Her body starts changing - a plate of chitin appears on her cheek, one eye darkens, and the pupil in it multiplies by eight. She begins to grow flowers that will cover her entire body in the future.
Caryll leaves the church to pursue the study of runes at the Mensis School, and… Rom, to his surprise, feels nothing. Moreover, because of her prolonged contact with Ibraitas, she begins to forget her old life and the people she loves.
Rom's child is never born - she loses the child. But that child will return to her, becoming a multitude of spiders that appear with her during the battle. Laurence has been heartbroken - his girlfriend, his love, the one he chose to marry - has isolated herself and given herself over to an insight. He wanted to be a father. And all their shared dreams of a family went down the drain. But he doesn't complain - his feelings are less important, than coming fall of Healing Church and Yharnam that Laurence can feel. He never knew that he was part of her plan. Though Rom did love him. But curiosity was paramount.
Yurie went from the Research Hall to the Choir, following Rom. But Rom hardly noticed her attempts to protect and be near her. And this annoyed Madlene (Imposter Iosefka), who despised not only Rom's working methods but also her impulsive nature.
Rom and Ebrietas find each other as two halves. A daughter finds future mother. An orphan meets a similar orphan. They resonate with each other in the strongest possible way, and Rom learns to understand her by transmitting the Great One's speech. Rom spends all her time with Ebrietas. And will exist next to Ebrietas without reacting to anyone around her. Everyone will think she's lost her mind, but Caryll will know it's still the same Rom, just on different levels and planes.
Rom will exist already as a spider and she will be visited by Laurence, Caryll, Yurie and then Damian will come to her when his life's work proves to be a failure. Willem never came to her - he had stopped contacting anyone. But really, Rom and he didn't need to - Willem knew his apprentice had ascended.
And then she'll shelter Yahar'gul at the cost of herself. And Micolash will be annoyed - such potential, and wasted. Rom achieved what he couldn't - Contact. And wasted it, in his opinion. That's why he calls her an "idiot."
I can say that Rom has always been a loner, and even being surrounded by people - she remained lonely. Only Caryll could understand her and was practically her soulmate, but gradually they started to keep secrets from each other - secret knowledge creates jealousy and fear. She experimented only on herself, not out of fear of harming others, but more out of a desire to feel the results, even if it hurt and was bad. She is probably the most successful of scientists - she accomplished her goal.
I apologize for the amount of text! Adding my old art with Rom: (just because)

DNDADS S2 SPOILERS!
Midnight thoughts at it again :)
Sparrow named Normal and Hero that way because Hero was supposed to be a sacrifice to save the world and Normal was just the replacement kid. He didn’t be a father to them because he didn’t want to grow bonds with them and watch them die. In the end, he didn’t even take in an optimistic hope that perhaps everything goes well without his children dying and just named them what they would be in his story. A hero and a normal kid.
You would think that she’d have at least a little bit of a relationship with Hero, the person he focused his whole attention on but instead it most likely just concerned her, made her feel alone and made her distance herself from him as much as she could. Think about it. Your dad and your uncle always takes you on these ‘trips’ to go hunting, learn how to use guns and knives, etc. without your younger brother going as well. You just have 2 fully grown adults going, teaching only YOU something. Wondering why your brother doesn’t come either and if this is a normal thing that happens to people. Then, you are told by them that you are the chosen one and now put this incredibly heavy weight onto you, A CHILD. You never asked for this but you also can’t talk to anyone else about it so you’re left alone, with just your thoughts.
And Normal. You’re ABSOLUTELY wondering why your name is Normal but your sister’s is Hero. And the fact that she constantly goes on trips with your dad and uncle that you NEVER get invited to. At a very young age, you are already questioning what is wrong with you, why does your dad not like you as much, why am I not as good as my sister. You feel isolated away from them, like there is something that everyone knows is obvious that you don’t. It makes you feel like an idiot. Even if you ask, your dad doesn’t allow you on these trips so you just stay at home, wondering. Your dad never puts in much effort to be your dad, what are you doing wrong? And if he never puts in any energy into being a parent, why should you put in effort to be his son?
Sparrow was too scared to get attached to his own children.
(I love Sparrow but my GOD, he needs to take a lesson from Ron’s books and be the dad that stepped up)

Okay so @green-tea217 requested that I share this fanfic based on this post that I made.
I never usually post my fanfics, but I’m feeling brave. This one isn’t finished, but I’ll post the first chapter ‘cause I’m really proud of it. I’m working on the other fanfics that were requested, but I’m posting this one first because I’ve worked rlly had on it.
Summary: Kind of an OC/FanChild fic about my hcs for Percabeth’s kids. VERY Leo/Nico heavy bc they’re my two favourite characters, particularly Leo.
TWs: Swearing, lack of smut (she is a teenager)
Disclaimers: I was still reading SoN when I wrote this chapter, and I am currently on HoH, so if I’ve missed anything that gets revealed later, that’s why. Also I listened to the audiobooks, so if I spell a name wrong, that’s also why, either that or I’ve spelt something the British way.
Chapter 1:
Olympia hated stories.
She hated telling them. She hated hearing them. She hated the way they were often twisted and bent to contain some kind of message. She hated the theatrics of sharing them around the fire, the hushed voices and dramatic tone. And she hated how every story she heard was almost always about her dad.
Olympia Grace Jackson-Chase.
Of course.
For as long as she can remember, people had told her stories about her parents. About her and her birth. How she had been born on Olympus. How Apollo himself had delivered her, and named her “Olympia Grace” so that it would rhyme with her last name. That wasn’t entirely true. “Grace” was the last name of her Auntie Thalia and Uncle Jason. She hated the stories about them too- about all her parents’ friends. They were myths and legends in the eyes of the other campers, to her they were just people who babysat her sometimes. The Cabin 9’ers had been shocked when she’d told them that the heroic son of Hephaestus who had saved the world from Gaea and her evil forces was actually just Little Uncle Leo, and the first Fire User in three and a half centuries isn’t very mythical and legendary when he’s running in from the kitchen, waving a tea-towel at the fire alarm and yelling “Oh shit, the guacamole’s on fire. I set the guacamole on fire. Don’t tell your mom.”
People never wanted to hear those stories. Only the exiting and dangerous ones.
“Percy Jackson fought the Minotaur when he was only ten years old!!!”
“Percy Jackson keeps insisting I tidy my room.”
Suffice it to say, she was sick of it.
“Dad,” she asked, approaching the kitchen table.
Perseus Jackson, the man, the myth, the legend himself, looked up from his comic book and ginned at her.
“What is it, dolphin?”
“Can you… like… not send me to camp this year?”
Her dad frowned, put The Amazing Spider-Man down on the table and leaned back in his chair.
“Why? What’s up? Are the other campers not nice to you there?”
“It’s not that… in fact, it’s the opposite. The attention is getting too much. I wanna learn to fight, but… I’d rather you just teach me yourself. You can show me how to use my water powers.”
“Oly, I know it’s hard, especially as you’re one of the first Legacies at Camp Half-Blood. I can absolutely arrange for you to not go anymore if you don’t want to… but there’s only so much I can teach you on my own, particularly with your mother’s workload. I want to make sure you’d be protected. Could you maybe give it a try, please?”
Olympia was pretty sure she’d been “giving it a try” for the last 14 summers, but she didn’t want to argue with her dad.
“Fine,” she said.
“That’s my girl,” he beamed, “Now, remember to pack your armour for Capture the Flag, I don’t want to have to drive out there and back just ‘cause you forgot it again.”
She sighed and left the room.
She just wished that he had stayed in the car when he’d dropped her off, but no. He insisted on walking with her to the Big House, saying hello to Chiron and generally being a huge embarrassment. It didn’t take long for the crowds of campers to form around them, whispering behind their hands. She hugged her dad, and said goodbye to him as quickly as she could.
She dumped her things in the Poseidon Cabin. She was allowed in both her mom and her dad’s old cabins, but she preferred to be alone to sleep. She did her activities with the Athena kids though, she didn’t want to stand out any more than she already did.
Olympia sat alone, perched on the edge of the Athena table, when suddenly a kid shuffled up next to her. She looked about twelve, with the same grey eyes of her mother.
“What’s your name?” The girl asked.
“Olympia Jackson-Chase,” Olympia sighed.
“I’ve noticed you doing cabin activities with us, but you don’t sleep with the other Athenians? What’s up with that?”
Olympia took a deep breath, and began to explain, “I’m a-“
“Wait. Jackson-Chase?” The kid gasped.
Oh, here we go, Olympia thought, preparing for the usual swooning and/or geeking out.
“Your mother was Annabeth Chase?”
Olympia was slightly taken aback, “Usually, people talk mostly about my father. I’m always “The daughter of Percy Jackson,” never “the daughter of Annabeth Chase.””
“Oh but she’s a legend! She re-designed Olympus! She led our cabin in battle against the Titans! She even held up the sky! I mean, I know your dad did that too, but-“
“She did it for longer. She was under that thing for over a day, he only held it for at most 20 minutes.”
The girl laughed.
“And, if you ask me, she was the one who did all the work when it came to defeating Kronos. Dad did jack shit, just handed a knife to a guy.”
“Exactly! Just because he was in the Prophecy-“
“Nah, it’s a lot simpler than that,” Olympia said, “It’s because he’s a man.”
They sat in silence for a bit.
She never blamed her dad for overshadowing her mom. He didn’t mean to. In fact, he openly hated the stories that didn’t recognise her for all she did. They were so in love, it was sickening.
“I can’t believe she’s, like, my sister.”
The girl gasped, and grabbed Olympia’s arm, “Wait, does that make me your aunt?”
Olympia shook her head, “Don’t bother with family trees, man, otherwise you get into the whole “my dad’s dad is my mom’s mom’s uncle, which makes me kinda my mom’s second cousin, and my dad her cousin-once-removed”- it’s just too much to get your head around.”
She looked directly into the girl’s grey eyes, “My advice, kid, believe whatever bullshit they tell you about the Gods not having DNA, and just try not to think about it.”
The girl’s face fell. “Oh.”
Then she looked exited again, “Did you come out of her tummy or her head like I did with my mom?”
And there we go, Olympia thought. Geez, they didn’t hesitate to ask the really invasive questions, did they?
She took her three-pronged fork out of her pocket, and fidgeted with it, twirling it in her fingers. Instantly, she realised her mistake.
“Why do you carry a fork around and never eat with it?” The girl asked. More questions.
Might at well get it over with, she thought.
“Gift from Grandpa,” she replied.
“A gift from Poseidon? What does it do?”
She sighed again, and dangled the fork over the girl’s glass of orange juice, and let go. It dropped into the glass with a satisfying plop, and then rose to the surface. No, it wasn’t rising. It was growing. It’s shaft elongated, and the prongs stretched to become longer and way more deadly. Intricate designs started carving itself into the metal. Olympia stood up, and grabbed the shaft of the fork just as it finished growing. A three-pronged death skewer of pure celestial bronze. A Trident.
The surrounding campers gaped at her, open-mouthed.
“Woah,” said one of the Hephaestus campers, clearly someone who hadn’t seen the spectacle before.
“OLYMPIA JACKSON-CHASE! NO WEAPONS AT THE DINNER TABLE! CAMP RULES! YOU OF ALL PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW THAT!!”
“Sorry Chiron,” Olympia called. She twisted a little ring of metal around the shaft of the trident, and it shrank back into a fork. She sat back down.
“It responds to water,” she explained, “get it wet, and boom, Trident.”
She had named it Blue. It was her first word, after all. Or at least, that was the story. Poseidon had given it to her on her second birthday, and she had just looked at it, holding it in her tiny fist, and cried “bloooo!” It was probably just baby babbling, but Dad said it counted.
“So what’s Poseidon like? Do you have water powers too? Can you get me your mom’s autograph? Is your dad really 7ft tall?”
She ate the rest of her lunch in silence, only answering the onslaught of questions from the young camper when she had to.
Cabin 3 offered a pleasant respite from the crowds and the people. She dropped her armour and weapons from the day’s activites by the door and kicked off her shoes.
She looked at herself in the mirror.
(Drawing of Olympia: Art by me)
Her curly black hair, which she’d dyed the tips of blonde, was pulled back into a messy ponytail. Around her neck hung a necklace of leather chord, fourteen different coloured beads threaded onto them, each painted with a different design. Her broad shoulders and thick muscles bulged through her plain navy-blue tank top. Her skin was tanned from spending long hours training in the sun. She had a battle-hardened look to her that meant people often mistook her for a daughter of Ares. But her eyes was what made her stand out most- one grey, like her mother, one green, like her father. Her parents had told her how her birth had ended the centuries-long feud between Poseidon and Athena for good, and she had been given those eyes as a way of symbolising that. Another story. It felt like every part of her body had been attached to a story about something her parents had done. Why couldn’t she just be herself? She had spent 16 years living under the shadow of her parents, she was homeschooled from an early age, and had been going to camp since before she could even hold a sword- the demigod life was all she’d ever known. Someday, she’d get away from it all. She’d sink to the bottom of the Mariana Trench and just study the fish, and she wouldn’t have to worry about people or monsters
Suddenly, she felt something tap her on her shoulder. Quick as lightning, she grabbed Blue and spun around. Blue, still in fork form, was about a centimetre away from the neck of her intruder, who held up his hands in surrender.
“Whoah there!” He said.
When she saw who it was, she lowered the weapon and pulled him into a tight hug.
“Leo!” She cried.
“Hey, how’s my favourite cousin? Or… whatever.”
She looked at him and smiled. Despite him being old enough to be her dad, he was about half her size. With a thin, wiry frame and very little meat on his bones. His wild, curly brown hair framed his pointed face and elfish features. His dark skin was covered in a thin layer of motor oil and grime of unknown origin. He tapped her cheek affectionately, leaving a grubby handprint on her face. He walked over to her bed and leaped onto the top bunk, his legs dangling off the ladder.
“You need to stop growing,” he instructed, “You are getting too big, it’s not fair.”
“You need to stop being so short,” Olympia retorted, then her face broke into a huge smile, “I feel like I never see you anymore!”
“I know, you’re too old for me to babysit now, kiddo,” He complained.
“Well that always ended in disaster anyway. There’s still burn marks on that wall.”
“Did your mom find out?” He asked.
“Nope. Dad told her he just wanted to hang more pictures up. And then he went on a long speech about how nice she looked in that wedding photo, and then took her out for ice cream. I think she bought it.”
“Good.”
They stayed in comfortable silence for a few seconds, and then she asked, “So… it’s great that you’re here and all, but… why are you here?”
“What, I can’t come and visit my favourite partner in crime every now and then?”
“Leo…” Her tone was firm.
Leo’s face was suddenly dark and serious, he paused before speaking, but said, “I think I have news about your brother.”
That was Chapter 1- if this post gets… let’s say… 30 notes, I’ll post Chapter 2.

Anna
Photos are not mine. They are courtesy of Pinterest/Google.
Pairing: Tattoo Artist Billy Russo x F! Reader
Warnings: All the baby fluff, I don’t even think there are any swear words in this, maybe one. But this is probably one of the fluffiest fics I’ve written.
Word Count: 3k-ish
Summary: Your little girl is now a mobile toddler and so many people just adore her. Anna’s godfather, Frank, is having so much fun being a godfather but she has a favorite babysitter and her name is Shortcake.
A/N: Continuation/Side Story of The Sweetest Pain Series. I knew I wouldn’t be able to stay away from this series for long. Toddlers are so unpredictable and they soak up everything like a sponge so it was fun to write for an active toddler. I’d like to thank @jvanilly for suggesting the other artists keeps snacks at their stations for her visits, I thought that was adorable. And Shortcake is a character created my lovely Lily @munsonownsmyass in her fic Mark Upon Your Skin Give it a read if you haven’t yet!
As always, thank you for reading! I appreciate it so much and comments, reblogs are welcome and encouraged. Don’t be shy to tell me your favorite part. 💕💕 💕
She was still trying to get the hang of being upright, toddling around on two legs instead of crawling on all fours. Even when she wobbled and fell down, she didn’t get upset or give up. She just got right back up and started walking again, your little miss was a lot like her father in that way.
Billy never gave up or gave in either, he didn’t know the meaning of the word, and he didn’t stop until he got what he wanted. And right now, Billy Russo had everything he had ever wanted. He had a thriving business, he had opened up the other side of the studio so he could bring in more artists and added space to display his artwork.
Always booked out for months in advance, people came from all over to have Billy do their tattoos. He brought their ideas to life and when he was finished, they always left with a smile on their face.
And he finally had something that he had always wanted…a family. Growing up in the group home, Billy would see children come and go. They would get adopted or placed in foster homes but he didn’t. Couples coming in to adopt wanted young children or babies, they never gave Billy a second look so he never knew what it was like to be part of a family until he became part of Frank’s, until he became “Uncle Billy.”
As welcome as they made him feel, something was still missing but he ultimately found those missing pieces. You were one of them, you were someone who understood him, you let him talk when he wanted to, and loved him even with his faults.
He loved you more than anything.
You could see he was scared to death when you told him you were pregnant. He didn’t know anything about parenting. All he knew how to be was Junior and Lisa’s fun uncle Billy. “What do I know about being a dad? I never had one.” Those words broke your heart but you knew he’d love that baby no matter what and you would both learn together.
She was a carbon copy of her father. From her wild dark brown hair to her onyx colored eyes, she melted both of your hearts with her infectious laugh and million dollar smile that was just like Billy’s. And now that she was more mobile, you had to pay extra attention to her so she didn’t get into too much trouble.
The little miss was starting to talk more, put little sentences together too and Billy was excited that she said “da-da” before “mama.” You knew it was easier for a lot of babies to say “da-da” but you just let him have that win because he was just over the moon about it.
And she hadn’t picked up on any yet but you were willing to put money down on her Uncle Frankie teaching her some very “colorful” words sometime in the near future.
Your little girl was constantly surrounded by people who loved her. Frank was always bringing her places with the kids, Maria would watch her one day a week while you and Billy were at work, but Anna’s favorite babysitter was definitely Shortcake.
You were convinced that something happened the day she was born like Shortcake imprinted on her or something crazy like that because your little Anna Raven Russo just adored her. Anna couldn’t quite say “Shortcake” yet so she just called her “Cake.”
One of Anna’s favorite things to do was to try and scare you but she also loved for you to scare her. It was a game she played with Shortcake all the time.
“Baby, why does our child like it when you jump out and scare her? She laughs like a crazy person…watch.” Billy said, hiding behind a door and calling for her.
With a smile on your face, you watched Anna clumsily run over to where Billy was hiding and he jumped out from the dark room. She screamed and then started to laugh.
You and Billy chuckled and he said “See…she’s a little nut.”
“Again Daddy!” Anna yelled.
You just shook your head as you gazed down at her and said “Oh Shortcake plays that game with her. That’s one of the things they like to do with each other is ‘play scared.’”
The day Anna was born, she didn’t have many visitors because she was born in the middle of a snowstorm. Her own father almost missed her birth because of it but aside from Billy’s other employees, the other two people that were there the day she was born were Frank and Shortcake.
It was very hard to tear that baby away from her arms so Frank could hold her, there was just something so special about their relationship from day one and it had blossomed into the sweetest little friendship.
Anna loved visiting Billy at the tattoo studio and even though she obviously couldn’t read what it said, she knew the logo when she saw it. “Daddy…work.”
Firmly planted on your hip, she pointed at the Anvil logo on the window and a wide smile stretched across her face. Excited that she was going to see her other “friends” today, she started impatiently kicking her feet and gently bouncing against your side in anticipation.
Everyone looked up as you opened the door, every single person had a smile on their face as you put the little miss down so she could go say hi to everyone. Her first stop was always her father.
She saw Billy standing behind the counter and she took off running as fast her little legs would let her, he scooped her up in his arms and blew a raspberry on her cheek. Anna let out a high pitched squeal like she did every time Billy did that to her, she loved it.
“And how’s my pretty girl today?” Billy asked.
Anna pointed at you. “Mommy…pretty.” She said.
You let out a little chuckle.
Billy gazed at you like he hadn’t seen you in a week. “Yes, mommy is very pretty…she’s beautiful.” He said with a wink, giving you butterflies in your stomach.
Frank walked in off of the back deck. “Is my goddaughter here?!! Come here, sweetheart.” He said as he squatted down with his arms outstretched.
“Down…Daddy.” She said to Billy.
Billy kissed her on the forehead. “Down daddy, PLEASE.” He said.
Her deep brown eyes, her father’s eyes, looked him over before she said “Peeease!”
Billy set her on the floor and her little legs took her right to Frank. He picked her up and started to “bite” at her neck and she grabbed his nose. “Ow! You got my nose!” He said jokingly with Anna laughing.
“Well to be fair, it is a large target Frankie. Of course she would grab your nose.” Billy said with everyone else getting a good laugh at that one.
You stared intently as big Raven played with little Raven, he had the biggest smile on his face while he played with her and tickled her. Obviously, Frank loved his children but he told you he does sometimes miss when they were babies and he did miss out on a lot of time when they were small because he was deployed so he was really enjoying being Anna’s godfather.
She then toddled around to everyone’s work station, smiling as she waved and said hi to the other artists in the shop that day. They always had snacks and stickers for her, doting on her the entire time she was visiting.
After Anna made the rounds and extorted all of the snacks out of everyone, she ran back over to you. “Up…mommy!” She said with her arms extended over her head.
Tilting your head to the side as you looked down at her, you said. “Up mommy, PLEASE.”
“Up peeeease, mommy!” She said.
You and Billy were doing your best to try and raise a polite human being.
When you picked her up, she turned her hand up toward the ceiling so you knew she was trying to ask you a question and it was adorable. “Cake…mommy?”
“Awwww, Shortcake isn’t here today baby girl.” You said to her.
Anna looked a little disappointed.
“You’ll see her in a couple days. She’s coming to babysit you while Mommy and Daddy go out on a date.” Billy said to her in that soothing voice of his.
Bouncing her on your hip, you smiled at her and asked “Ok?”
Nodding her head and pursing her lips, she said “Ok.”
**********
A couple of days later, while playing with Anna in the living room, you heard a knock at the door. She looked up from her blocks and a smile pulled at the corners of her mouth, stretching all the way across her face.
She knew who was at the door.
“Who’s here, Anna? Let’s go see!” You said excitedly.
“Cake…Mommy!” She yelled.
You shrugged your shoulders. “I dunno, we gotta open the door.”
As soon as the door opened, Anna ran toward Shortcake who was holding a gift bag.
“Anna!! My little bird, I’ve got something for you.” She said.
Shortcake was ALWAYS bringing Anna presents…dinosaur stuffed animals, books, tiny hoodies. And today wasn’t any different as she followed Shortcake over to the couch to open the bag. Anna threw the tissue paper on the floor and pulled out a pair of Converse sneakers, just like the ones Shortcake had on.
“Now we have the same shoes!” She said.
You just sat back and watched Anna pick up one of the sneakers to show you.
“Look, mommy!” She said.
“I see them, baby. Do you like them?” You asked her.
“On…peeeeease.” Said Anna.
“I guess that’s a yes. What do you say?” You asked.
Anna looked up at Shortcake through her long dark lashes and said “taaaank you.”
Billy walked out from the bedroom. “What did you spoil my child with now, Shortcake?” He asked, walking over to you and pulling you flush with his chest.
You always felt so safe in his arms even from the very first time he hugged you. The way he held you tight and gave you that extra squeeze, you knew Billy was the one for you.
He tilted your chin up so you were looking into his eyes, he smiled and leaned down to kiss you. Things were very different now that you had a child but you still made time for each other to go out on “dates.” You were lucky enough to have so many people willing to babysit while you and Billy went out and spent alone time together.
“She bought Anna her first pair of Chuck Taylor’s. Aren’t they adorable?” You said.
He smiled as he watched Shortcake put the shoes on Anna’s feet. “That is really cute. You ready to go, beautiful?” He asked.
You explained to Shortcake that Anna had a nice long nap earlier and she was probably growing again because she was sleeping so much. You left dinner for them both and told them to have fun which you didn’t really need to tell her because they always had fun.
“Ok well you two go out and enjoy yourselves, she’s in good hands.” Said Shortcake.
You and Billy told Anna that you would see her later and to be good for Shortcake.
“Bye Mommy, bye Daddy.”
Billy narrowed his eyes at Anna, then turned to look at you. “Is she kicking us out?” He asked.
“I think she is.” You replied.
The two of you waved goodbye and headed out for dinner.
When you were halfway through with dinner, your phone started buzzing. It was Shortcake.
Your skin immediately pricked with goosebumps with worry, wondering if anything was wrong.
“Hey Shortcake, what’s up? Everything ok?” You asked.
There was a slight pause, everything was quiet for a minute before she answered.
“Uh, yeah…well, I think I know why the little bird has been sleeping a lot lately. After you left she kind of developed a little bit of a fever. She did eat and I gave her a cool bath. Her temperature went down a little but she does have a little bit of congestion so I gave her some Tylenol, and put the humidifier on in her room when I put her to bed.” She said.
“Wow…look at you go. We’ll finish up dinner and come home so you can—“
She interrupted you. “No, no…please stay out. I’m ok with her here, she’s sleeping, she’s fine. Enjoy alone time with each other for a while longer…please?”
You and Billy weren’t the type of parents to freak out over every little sniffle, kids get sick, that’s what they do. You didn’t know if Shortcake ever had to deal with a sick baby before but it sounded like she was a pro at it.
“Are you sure? We really can come home if you want us to, just so you don’t catch her cold.” You said.
“I want you guys to stay out, it really is ok.” She said. “I won’t take no for an answer.”
“Ok, ok. We’ll see you in a little while then. Bye.”
And you hung up.
Billy touched your hand. “Everything ok, sweet girl?” He asked.
You told him everything Shortcake told you.
“Wow, sounds like she’s got everything under control.” He said.
“Our little girl is a tough one, not letting anyone know she’s sick. She’s tough like her dad.” You said leaning across the table to plant a soft kiss on his lips.
His tongue darted out to slowly lick his bottom lip, and tasting the red wine on your lips he replied “And like her mom.”
And he kissed you again.
**********
When you arrived home, Shortcake was having some tea and watching tv.
“Thank you for taking care of her tonight. Just, really and truly thank you, not only for taking care of her but for giving us some needed time with each other.”
Billy leaned over and kissed your temple.
You touched her hand, looked at her and said, “And I think you’re gonna make a really great mom someday.”
Shortcake brushed a tear away from her cheek and smiled. “Thank you.” And she leaned in to give you a hug.
You and Shortcake weren’t always so close. When she first started at the shop, you thought she wanted Billy but it was just a misunderstanding and you quickly moved forward.
It’s a huge deal to trust someone enough to take care of your child but there was no question that Shortcake loved Anna and Anna loved her in return.
“I do have to show you guys something, well two things. The first one is on my phone here…hang on.” She said.
Pulling out her phone, she clicked on a video she took of Anna.
“Anna…little bird…tell mommy and daddy the new word you learned. What’s this on my arm right here?” She asked.
Anna pointed to Shortcake’s arm. “Tattoooooo!”
You and Billy started to laugh.
“And what’s the second thing?” Billy asked.
She motioned for the two of you to walk with her to Anna’s room.
Peering into her crib, you and Billy glanced down to see your little Raven asleep but also clutching her new sneakers tightly to her chest.
“She wanted to wear them to bed so we had to compromise. I figured since they’re brand new, it would be ok.” Said Shortcake. “It’s ok, right?” She asked with an unsure tone to her voice.
“Of course it’s alright. I’m sure you really had to fight her on not wearing them to bed, didn’t you. She’s stubborn, like her father.” You said with a sly smile on your face.
Billy narrowed his eyes at you and then a smile broke out across his face because he couldn’t keep a straight face as he said “I have no idea what you’re talking about, sweet girl…hey Shortcake, you think you can convince Matt to have one of these? Look at how cute she is, huh?” He joked in a whisper.
Even in the dim light of Anna’s room, you could see Shortcake blush and shy away from the two of you in embarrassment.
Elbowing Billy in the stomach, you playfully scolded him. “Don’t embarrass her, Billy.”
Quietly, the three of you tip toed out of Anna’s room. Billy had something he wanted to ask Shortcake and earlier at dinner he asked if it sounded like a good idea. You told him it sounded perfect.
“Shortcake, I wanted to ask you something and you can say no if you want but I was wondering if you could do a tattoo on me for Anna? Since I fired Andy for looking at my wife’s ass too much, he’s definitely not doing it. But I think that just means that maybe you were meant to do it anyway. I want her name and a raven next to it, if you’re up for it.”
Shortcake was practically speechless. Nervously, she stumbled a little over her words when she answered Billy’s question.
“Billy…I really don’t know what to say. To trust me with such an important piece, having to do with your daughter. I—I would love to do that for you.” She replied, her eyes shined with unshed tears.
Snaking your arms around Billy’s waist, his hands held you tightly against him and he moved his hands up and down along your spine causing goosebumps to dance across your skin, and you could feel him relax.
He felt very content.
“Good, thank you. We can talk more about it on Monday.” He said.
On her way out, Shortcake pulled both of you in for a hug. “Thank you both. Little bird is just so special and I—I just love her to death.” She said.
You smiled warmly at her and replied. “And she loves you. Thank you again for tonight.”
Shortcake turned back to look at you and Billy after walking out the door and said with a smile.
“Anytime.”
