Millennium Actress is also my favourite animated movie ever! But I'm surprised Tekkonkinkreet isn't on your list, I thought for sure you'd have it but I guess you like the manga more. Also if I'm not annoying you with these questions, here's another- what are your favourite animated movies that are not anime?
Tekkonkinkreet is a stellar movie for sure! But a lot of what makes it so unique is shared with Mindgame, having been made by the same studio who's work in general I adore. I honestly hesitated to put it in Mindgame's place, but I've seen it so many times I have a precise idea of the shortcomings it does have which are mostly in the writing. Tekkon's final act is a mess, even without having read the manga when I first saw it, my general impression of the ending is that it shone as remarkably corny and plain bad compared to the rest of the film, something I later learned was due to crunch times in the production...
While yes, I like the manga more, the movie is an incredible adaptation that's different enough to stand out on it's own, with a notably different construction to its story (linear and gradual in its intensity, where the manga has a messier approach), and everything related to the sound, with its original soundtrack and the best voice acting I've heard in anime! So, it was a tough pick :)
As for favorite non-anime animated movies...
If you only count anime as a subgenre of japanese animation, Junk Head is one of my GOATs. Deliciously fun and weird, it's got a rythm and vibe to it that can only come from a tiny indie kickstarted production. It's an antidote to the sort of slop that comes from commercialization and having to work with the constraints of it and a plain good time. I'm excited to go back in theaters to go see the sequel!
And if you only count films foreign to Japan, boy the selection does get large...some misc favorites of mine include:
The rabbi's cat, by itself a comic adaptation of what may be my favorite comic ever. It's a charming, witty movie set in a place and time period that a lot of people are not familiar with. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone reading this and wants something that's both an accessible watch and really clever :)
Ruben Brandt: Collector, a little gem I discovered in a small festival, is a heist film for art nerds. A two second look into its visuals is enough to grasp how weird this movie looks. I am real fond of action films and drama and this has both, without ever being bland OR pretentious. Unique and a great time. If you're having trouble with the art style do try nonetheless, it can be offputting at first but it's really worth it
A movie I recently rediscovered who I hesitate to call a fav because I've only seen it twice but who's incredible looking is gotta be Azur and Asmar. I'm not...the biggest fan of the director's work usually but this one has all his qualities without his defaults, it's whimsical and silly in a way that makes it a fun watch even as an adult and it looks INSANE
When the wind blows: I don't think I can ever bring myself to rewatch it because it's one of the hardest hitting movies I've seen, but also, it's one of the hardest hitting movies I've seen. You will look past how cute the art looks really fast. Sombering, gutting film, and ever relevant
And I'm allowing myself One normie pick here: i really like the Aristocats :3
#btw i love getting asks you're absolutely not annoying!#ask#theres also a film whos early work i saw this last year that promises to be tailor made crack cocaine for me but idk if i can list it bc.#its not DONE yet not even that its unreleased its damn unfinished...
