These are limited to hotlines for reporting abusive foreign employers and Indian consulates located in a few select countries of the SWANA region. [... Brokers] emphasize the docility of Indian migrants in comparison to the disruptive tendencies of other Asian migrant workers. [...] “Some of these Filipino men you see make a lot of trouble in the Arab countries. Even their women, who work as maids and such, lash out. The employer says one wrong thing and the workers get the whole country [the Philippines] on the street. [...] But you don’t see our people creating a tamasha [spectacle] overseas.” [...] Just as Filipinx migrants are racialized to be undisciplined labor, Indian brokers construct divisions within the South Asian workforce to promote the primacy of their own firms. In particular, Pakistani workers are racialized as an abrasive population.
[...] While the public image of the South Asian American community remains as model minorities, presumed to be primarily upwardly mobile professionals, the global reality of the population is quite to the contrary. [...] From the historic colonial routes initiated by British occupation of South Asia to the emergence of energy markets within the countries of SWANA, migrants have been recruited to build industries by contributing their labor to construction projects. Within the last decade, these South Asian migrants, with experience in the SWANA oil industry, have been actively solicited as guest workers into the energy sector of the United States. The growth of hydraulic fracturing has opened new territory for oil extraction; capitalizing on the potential market are numerous stakeholders who have invested in industrial construction projects across the southwestern United States. With its 16 electoral votes, North Carolina is strategically important for both presidential campaigns. If Donald Trump wins there as well as in Georgia and Pennsylvania, he will have the 270 electoral votes he needs. If he doesn’t, he will need two other states outside his Electoral College base. Kamala Harris could win the presidency by carrying all of the Blue Wall states. But if she loses one of them, then North Carolina offers her the most likely route to victory, because Georgia and Arizona are leaning increasingly toward Trump in the election’s waning days.1
Of the seven swing states this year, North Carolina is the most puzzling. It is the only swing state that Donald Trump carried in 2020 while losing the national popular vote by 4.4 points. He received 49.9% of the state’s popular vote, compared to 46.9% nationally, while Biden underperformed his national share by 2.7 points in North Carolina, garnering only 48.6%. In short, Trump ran nearly six points ahead of his national showing in the Tar Heel State.
Because Trump is much more competitive in the national popular vote and in the swing states this year, he would be expected to be well out in front in North Carolina. But he isn’t. All the poll aggregates show him with a lead of at most one point, not much better than he is performing nationally.
We have good reason to believe that both campaign’s internal polls are consistent with the public polls. Candidates’ time is scarce and precious in the closing days of a presidential election. But both candidates have spent a lot of time in the state; on October 30, both candidates visited North Carolina yet again.
So why is North Carolina, a state that Trump should be leading comfortably and that Democratic presidential candidates have carried only twice in the past half century, in play this year?
Since 2020, North Carolina’s population has increased by nearly 400,000, behind only Texas and Florida, so one hypothesis is that the state’s rapid population growth has shifted the political balance in the Democrats’ favor. But the voter registration statistics tell the opposite story. Since 2020, the number of Democrats registered to vote has fallen by 168,000 while the number of registered Republicans has risen by 118,000, cutting the Democrats’ edge from almost 400,000 in 2020 to just 113,000 now.
Another plausible hypothesis is a pro-Harris mobilization of the state’s Black voters, who make up nearly one-quarter of the state’s electorate. Again, the data we have so far goes in the other direction. In 2020, Trump received only seven percent of the Black vote. This year, according to the polls, his share is likely to more than double.
A third hypothesis: Traditional Republicans could no longer stomach Donald Trump and are breaking ranks to support Harris. Again, plausible but incompatible with the evidence to date. Trump is receiving about 95% of the Republican vote this year, as he did four years ago.
The most plausible hypothesis of all: A massive outpouring of women angered by the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade. But in North Carolina, the opposite seems to be the case. According to several well-regarded polls, Harris is only breaking even with Trump among women. (Conversely, Trump’s edge among men is remarkably small.)
The evidence we have so far supports only one conclusion: Trump’s lead in North Carolina is smaller than expected because he is performing significantly worse among white voters than he did four years ago. According to the 2020 exit polls, Trump beat Biden by 66% to 33% in this group, which makes up nearly two-thirds of the state’s electorate. This year, his share of the white vote is down to 58% while Harris is receiving about 40%.
If Marist’s recent North Carolina poll is accurate, this trend stretches across the much-discussed education gap in white America. Harris’ share of whites without college degrees is 29%, compared to Biden’s 21%. Four years ago, Biden got the support of only 50% of whites with college degrees, but Harris’ share stands at 61%.
It is possible that when the votes are counted, the North Carolina puzzle will disappear, and that Trump’s performance will be consistent with both history and his overall national vote. But if the discrepancy persists through Election Day, analysts will be asking why so many white North Carolinians deserted the nominee of the party that almost always wins the state.

Reddit is going public via the IPO route. Last year, the CEO got $193 million, but moderators are not paid and expected to work free past IPO. Only some moderators and active users in the USA can apply for Reddit's initial public offering to buy stock at a special price. Most Reddit users are motivated by fake karma points and likes. Also, they banned almost all unofficial Reddit mobile clients. Meanwhile, the CEO profits while everyone provides free labor.
Until last year, Reddit used to encourage many users to guilt-tripping them to buy their gold coins. Now we know who got paid with those gold coins. It was for the CEO's exorbitant salary. Lmao. I even brought some coins out of that guilt trip. I feel like a sucker . LOL.
You can't browse NSFW subreddits without logging into your account. On Reddit, users share their adult content for free, while the CEO and management team benefit from the platform. This is why federated social media is important. One corporation should not have too much power to dictate how and what we are allowed to view without an account.
I really hope Reddit burns down. The CEO is a real POS who refuses to pay wages to Reddit moderators while taking $193 million salary per year. Even past IPO Reddit is not going to pay any money to moderators.

From wildfires in Canada to flooding in India, people across the world are dealing with the realities of climate change. The world recorded its highest temperatures ever this summer and the climate models for 2100 make sobering reading.
To tackle climate change we need a data-driven approach, using technology to help decarbonize the sectors that contribute to it. The transportation sector is the largest contributor to climate change in the US and Europe. Simply put, travel is in need of a long-overdue update. The good news is that, in 2024, we will kickstart that much needed moment for green mobility.
The International Energy Agency estimates 55 percent of the reductions needed to cut all greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 are linked to everyday consumer choices, particularly driving.
Over two-thirds of consumers cite the lack of electric charging stations as the biggest barrier to buying electric vehicles (EVs). However, new legislation, such as the European Green Deal and universal EV charging standards in the US, will help to put new chargers on the road.
The infrastructure is growing, but the information is still catching up. That’s why, to empower drivers with the information they need, Google has updated its Search experience to make it easier to research the costs and incentives associated with EVs. Google Maps also shows nearby EV chargers and offers eco-friendly routing—providing directions optimized for fuel or battery efficiency. In 2024, drivers will not only be able to more easily purchase an electric vehicle, they will be able to more easily charge them. The theory is simple: When billions of people have the tools to make more informed decisions, meaningful change is possible.
The impact of individuals grows exponentially when coupled with systemic investments by government officials and business leaders. We all know the feeling of impatience when waiting for the light to turn green. It’s not just an inconvenience, it’s bad for the environment—US Department of Energy data suggests that eliminating idling vehicles is equivalent to taking 5 million cars off American roads. In partnership with local governments, Google (where I am the chief sustainability officer) recently expanded Project Green Light—which leverages AI to improve traffic light efficiency—to 12 cities around the world. Early results show there’s potential to reduce the number of vehicle stops by up to 30 percent, lowering emissions for up to 30 million car trips monthly. Yet, we cannot focus exclusively on cars—providing sustainable public transport is also vital. Nowhere is the value clearer than in Japan, a leader in high-speed rail. One passenger traveling between Tokyo and Osaka emits 4.2 kilograms of carbon dioxide—one-twelfth the emissions of a passenger on a Tokyo-Osaka flight. That's why it's so important for people to have information on alternative, climate-friendly modes of transport at their fingertips—including comparable train routes, biking, and walking suggestions. This also illustrates the potential impact of projects like the Brightline train, designed to connect Los Angeles and Las Vegas by electric, high-speed rail.
Along with opportunities on roads and rails, in 2024 we will make progress on our skies. Aviation is responsible for 3.5 percent of global warming—35 percent of which is non-emissions related. The culprit? Contrails—the feathery white trails created by airplanes. They may look harmless, but they trap heat inside the Earth’s atmosphere. Using AI-based technology, Google partnered with American Airlines and Breakthrough Energy to reduce contrails by 54 percent—achieving the first proof point of verifiable and cost-effective contrail avoidance. Delta Airlines, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and others are also working to tackle the issue. In 2024, clean mobility will move closer to the norm across transportation, not the exception.

Two days had passed since the parole hearing. I was sitting by myself in the recreation area during free time when Scott turned up beside me.
“Hey inmate” he quipped.“I hear you’re finally getting out of this place. Where you going to stay?”
“For starters I think I might try one of the boarding houses downtown. When I get a bit more established I’ll look into finding an apartment”.
“you don't want to shack up with me?” Scott asked.
“The parole Nazis insisted upon electronic monitoring” I replied. “I don’t think the parole officer would think it appropriate for me to be shacked up with a CO. He would know where I was at all times”.
“That’s a pity” Scott answered. y“A boarding house would be a bit too public for what I have in mind. I guess we’ll have to try and find a quiet room in the jail after your teaching sessions. I’ll catch up with you later”.
Another CO soon approached me and advised that my parole officer was here to see me. He escorted me to an interview room where a mountain of a man was waiting.
“William, isn’t it?” the parole officer said as he got up to meet me. He was easily 6 foot 6, and broad across the shoulders. I shook his proffered hand, his firm grip leaving me in no doubt that messing with him was not a good idea.
“Yes Sir” I replied.
“My name is Mitch Evans. I will be handling your parole over the next year. You play ball with me during that time things will go smoothly. Step out of line and you’ll be back here before you know what’s hit you. Understood?”
“Yes Sir” I answered.
“You will be discharged tomorrow and delivered to special transit accommodation, where you may stay for a week until you find your own accommodation. Prior to your discharge you will be fitted with an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet. It will be your responsibility to ensure that it always remains charged, and should you believe it to be malfunctioning in any way, it is your responsibility to notify the monitoring center. Should a GPS signal fail to be constantly received you will, once located, be returned to this jail, no questions asked. Is that clear?”
“Perfectly Sir” I replied.
“I would also remind you of your curfew requirements – 6pm to 6am. If for any reason you can not meet these, you will contact me in advance. Failure to do so will land you back here” he continued. “Should I turn up at your place of residence at any time you are provide me full access, and submit to any breathalyzer or drug tests I ask you to undertake. You will be allowed use of one mobile phone, which is to be unlocked and presented to me for inspection on request. As detailed by the panel you are not to approach in any way any member of the Allen family, nor fraternize with any former inmate of any prison within the State. You are also not to enter any establishment where alcohol is served. You are to travel to and from work, or any place for purchase of necessities by the shortest practical route. Understood?”
“Yes Sir” I answered.
“Here are my contact details” he said, offering me his business card. “I hope we can have a mutually co-operative relationship”
“Yes Sir” I mutely replied.
“Any questions?” he asked.
“No Sir” I replied. I had done parole before, so I knew it involved doing exactly what you were instructed to do by your parole officer. From my past experience provided you co-operated parole officers loosened up a bit. But initially they were total Nazis.
“I will check on you in the transit accommodation. See you then” he stated. With that the CO escorted me back to the cell block.
I then got summoned to the Warden’s office. We made arrangements that I would continue my teaching role next week. I was given a staff identity card and instructions on how to enter the jail as a staff member. Judging by the security checks, it wasn’t much removed from being an inmate.
At dinner that night I said farewell to several inmates I had got to know over the years. It wasn’t a total farewell as I would still be teaching some of hi them next week.
The following morning Scott arrived at my cell. “Time to leave civilian” he joked. He escorted me to the discharge area. I signed the discharge paperwork, acknowledging all the parole conditions. After that I went to the property department where I was given the clothes I had been arrested in 6 years ago. They fitted loosely – I had clearly lost weight in the intervening years. They felt strange. I had worn little but prison uniforms for the past 6 years, but it was liberating to now be wearing civilian clothing again. My mobile phone and other items were also returned. I was advised my parents had sold my car when I was convicted, and the funds had been deposited into a trust account at a local bank. The jail also provided me a check for the balance of my inmate account – largely Scott’s money.
Then came the hard part. A representative from a company supplying ankle bracelets appeared. The guy was devoid of personality, and methodically pulled the item out of its box snapped it open, then equally quickly snapped it closed around my left ankle. He turned a key in it, which locked it on. He presented me with a charger and explained how to use it, and advised how any attempt to remove it would trigger an alarm at the monitoring center. He also provided me with contact details to report any malfunctions. Then came a bill for $50 for the first month’s hire. I hadn’t expected that I would have to pay to have the contraption locked on my ankle. I was frankly glad to see him depart once he had finished.
In due course I was escorted to the prison entrance. Scott had his cruiser out the front, and drove me to the transit accommodation. “I suppose we’ll see you next week for your next teaching lesson” he said as he dropped me off.
“Sure thing” I replied. “And I’ll arrange to transfer the inmate account balance to your bank account“.
“Thanks. See you Monday” he responded.
I walked into the transit accommodation, where a knarled old man stood behind front desk. “I expect that you might be William Beck?” he queried.
“Indeed I might” I replied.
“Room 24, to the right” he said, handing me a set of keys.”Make sure you’re out by this time next week” he added.
The room was fairly basic. It had a single bed and a small table. A second room in one corner had a toilet, washbasin and shower. Attached to the wall was a small television, however slightly larger than the one I’d purchased in State Prisons that I had with me.
A sound I hadn’t heard in years suddenly perforated the silence. It was my mobile phone ringing. The staff at County had kindly charged it, and arranged for some minutes on it. I pressed the “Accept call” button.
“Hi Dad” I answered, then listened to his reply. “Sure thing. Would love to do lunch. Just not anywhere that serves alcohol.”
