Jakub Jankto’s interview
There is a full transcript in Czech, I translated most of it (left out the boring football talk, lol) in my very unprofessional translation. Anyway, it’s Kuba speaking on the radio about his decision to come out now, the support he received, and the preview of the reactions to his coming out from the stands (for the Sunday game, which happened yesterday, and spoiler alert, the reaction from the stands was very positive :)))
Q: Do you feel relieved after the Monday’s announcement video?
From one point of view yes, definitely, because it was something that I struggled with for quite some time. It was a difficult decision but looking back, I’m really happy about it, as I said in the video now I can finally live the way I want, and that was the most important motivation for me.
Q: You say it was a long-time process, the decision – for how long have you been waiting or deciding whether to announce it publicly?
Well, it’s something that you don’t say every day, especially since out of the five top leagues, I was the first one to come out publicly – I think there are some examples from the second English division and the US…
Q: But also after ending a career.
Yeah, after finishing their careers. I had a lot of different thoughts, but in the end I said to myself that I don’t wanna wait for the end of the career, I wanna give an example to other people – that no matter your orientation, you can carry on doing your job, and it’s my job, that’s how I see football. So I think it was a good decision, and a positive exmple.
Q: Was there any decisive moment in the decision-making process? A moment when you thought ‚I have to do it now‘?
I don’t think there was one particular moment, it just kind of came to be. First when I said it, it was a year and a half ago to my parents and my best friend, and then once you say it to the first people, it gets to others slowly. A couple of months ago, I announced it in the dressing room, and then I thought there is still a final barrier, and I decided as I did, and came out publicly.
Q: I suppose you were talking about it and taking advice from people around you – did someone try to talk you out of it?
I wasn’t really asking for advice whether to do it or no, I believe it should be every single person’s own decision whether to do it or no. It was first and foremost my decision.
Q: Did you consult the public announcement with your current club, with Sparta, or with the coach?
Yes, of course when you make an announcement like this, you have to prepare the coming in a way, because – I didn’t want to make it unprofessionally, as I said, there should always be some form to it, and I didn’t want to achieve anything else. Sparta helped me a lot, a couple of people working there – Brian Pryske, our manager, to whom I spoke many times, and I really admire him as a person, obviously also as a manager, but in this decision he really supported me, as well as FRantišek Čupr or Tomáš Rosický, and others… The reaction from Sparta was very positive, and I am once again thanking them for it, because when you make a decision like this, it’s not easy, but then you’re relieved.
Q: You said that you announced it in the Sparta dressing room a couple of months back – what was the reaction of your teammates?
My teammates were fantastic. We said that nothing changes, and we go on as we did before, really, nothing has changed, they all took it absolutely normally, and there wasn’t any change in the dressing room.
Q: Didn’t you think it would be enough for you to come out just to them? That the fans don’t have to know it or care about it?
That’s how I planned it first. First it was my friends, my parents, and then it started to leak out, get to more people, so I said it to the teammates as well – when you spend every day with them in one dressing room, and after the matches when you celebrate with them, go out somewhere, then you grow closer with the people and you form friendships, so I wanted to tell it to them as well. Eventually it all led to the public coming out.
Q: You are naturally a very publicly followed and watched figure, as all footballers at the top level are – you also have an experience with the tabloids that were trying to uncover your private life a while back, with your ex-partner, with you paying or not paying the child support – wasn’t this personal experience discouraging you from coming out publicly? Or was it a motivation, that you wanted to be clear in this sense, to say it in your own words?
I have never spoken about this in public, and I don’t want to comment on it, I think it’s a private matter that we should discuss privately with my ex-partner. Now, our relationship is very neutral, I think it functions as it should, so I don’t want to comment on that.
Q: Yes of course, we are not a tabloid, I was asking more about your decision to come out publicly by your own announcement, and whether this previous experience motivated you to do so.
No, no, tabloids will always find something to talk about, and I never reacted to it and I don’t want to. But as I said, now the relationship works fine between me and my ex-partner, and my son, now there are no problems. I cannot influence whether the press will write something negative about me.
Q: You are the first player in the top leagues and still an active career who came out publicly, but on the other hand, in other sports or in the women’s football, it is more usual. Was there any sportsperson who inspired you in your coming out?
I don’t think there was one person. Of course I checked whether some players came out, how many of them did. In women’s football – in women’s sport in general, let’s say, it’s easier for people to accept. It’s not a coincidence that I am the first one, evidently, there might be others who are afraid to do it, afraid of the public response, but I think now nobody has to be afraid, and I’m glad that I could give a positive example. Also, lot of people, lots of teams supported me, and we can see that we can go on, continue working as we did before… We just see that in women’s sports, it’s still more acceptable for the public than in men’s.
Q: The video where you came out publicly on social media now has billions of views, thousands of comments and likes, it’s being written about by the world media – did you expect such a strong response?
The reaction was fantastic, huge – I expected a big reaction, but I didn’t expect for the biggest clubs and biggest organizations to support me. As I said, for me it was very easy afterwards, I was relieved that all these organizations and clubs supported me as a person announcing this. So this was fantastic, and I thank everyone once again.
Q: As you mentioned, some of the biggest clubs reacted to your video – Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Arsenal, Juventus and all the rest – it was also spoken about at the press conferences before the match of the Champions League – was there any reaction that you were most emotional about, or which affected you the most?
There were so many reactions, I haven’t even seen all of them, it wasn’t possible to read all the positive messages, of course the words of Neymar and of all the clubs were very positive, and I just hope that they are not just words, but that it’s a real support and something that will transform in the future into the support of other people, that it won’t be only me, but that the support will be there for all the people with different orientation.
Q: Did you expect different reactions? Did you expect there would be more negative reactions?
Of course there were negative reactions, as with everything, and I don’t hold it against anyone, everyone is entitled to their opinion. It’s not my intention to convince any community that doesn’t agree with it to agree. I think it would be stupid. Really, my first intention was to help others, to help them to their own private or public announcements, it’s everyone’s own decision. With the negative comments, I try to not read them, but I understand that a certain percentage of people will react negatively, but I don’t have a grudge against them, there’s no need to convince them. I’d rather focus on those where it makes sense, where it can help.
Q: What was the Czech reaction, do you have specific examples from the Czech environment?
Yes, sure. Slavia Prague supported me, although we’re big rivals –
Q: And you were originally a Slavia man.
I was originally a Slavia man, but that is a completely different question, it doesn’t have anything to do with this. So I am happy Slavia supported me, the Czech football representation, other clubs, they offered a lot of support.
Q: I am asking about the Czech environment because my colleague tweeted an anonymous message from a football player from one of the Czech clubs, where the player says that you became a butt of jokes and vulgarisms in the said club after your coming out, and that there was little understanding for it. Do you expect to encounter such things during the matches in the league – insults, jokes, mocking?
Of course I do. If anyone has the need to do this, I won’t react, I don’t want to react to it, I don’t want to focus on the negativity, I just want to focus there where it can help. But of course I know that as the first publicly outed man I will be the first one to walk out at the stadium and show some example. That there will be some negativity, negative comments and reactions, or some vulgarisms from the opposition players or other clubs, that’s how it is, you cannot avoid it. All that matters is that I show a good example, that I can say ‘guys, don’t be afraid, it’s possible’.
Q: I also noticed that many people were surprised at how big attention this announcement brought to you, and how big a deal it is. In many professions, there are openly gay men, and everyone accepts it – why is it so unusual in football?
Well, evidently the football environment is still a little homophobic. With every club, you have thousands or hundreds of ultras who maybe do not support or accept this topic, and because of them, there might be some wave of negativity. And we have no previous examples, positive examples, where we could claim that it doesn’t matter whether a footballer has this or that sexual orientation. It’ something new, and I’m the first to come out publicly, so at first there will be a lot of discussion and this will be a huge topic, but hopefully in a couple of weeks or months it will get better. And lets hope we one day get to the point where you could come up to someone and say you’re homosexual or heterosexual and it won’t surprise them at all, they’ll just say ‘whatever, lets move on’.
Q: In how long will we get to the point where such announcements will not be needed?
That’s a great question, I would love to be able to respond to that. I don’t know. Lets hope it’s as soon as possible, and lets hope it will be easier for them than it was for me.
Q: Do other footballers write to you, asking for advice, or telling you they might also want to come out?
No, so far there were no such messages, I got messages of support, saying they respect it, that it must have taken a lot of courage, so I appreciated that. But it’s been just a couple of days, so I didn’t get any messages asking for advice or support for someone else.
Q: But would you be happy to motivate others?
Yes, I would be glad to have motivated someone else as well. That was one of the aims. The first aim was for me to live the way I want, and the other was to help and motivate others in this decision.
Q: Can you focus on your football amidst all the attention you’ve now received?
Yes, one hundred percent. The day of the announcement, I went normally to the training session, and of course it’s a topic in the dressing room, we talk about it. But during the session, we just focus on the training, which I am glad about. And I would love to thank the players once again, that we really didn’t have to discuss it through, the trainings carry on as usual. We’ll see on Sunday what reactions will be coming (during the match). I believe they will be very positive, and I will focus solely on football and I’ll give my all, as I always did.
Q: What reaction do you expect from the stands?
As I said, positive. I got very positive messages from the Sparta fans, players, and all that, I don’t even want to imagine any negative reactions or insults. But it might happen.
Q: I understand that you don’t want to imagine that. On the other hand, for example the homophobic chant about Sparta (A/N – “Sparta, Sparta, buzerantů parta” = “Sparta, Sparta, a bunch of faggots”) is part of the stadium folklore. Do you think it might get louder, more present? Are you ready for that?
It can get louder, or it can lose its strenght. Maybe some fans who used to chant it, won’t want to use the words again, they will realize the meaning. Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself (with the expectations). We can only guess what will come, I don’t know what will happen. But lets hope that there will be gradually less and less of it, and I mean all of these vulgarisms, about sexual orientation or race. Because I don’t think it belongs in sports, it shouldn’t. But we still see it, so it would be naïve to think I won’t encounter that. There won’t be only positive reactions.
Q: Have you spoken to anyone about a possible reaction to any homophobia displayed in the stands, if it crosses a certain level of acceptance – like leaving the pitch, as a team?
We haven’t. And I don’t think it will happen. So far, everything has happened very calmly, normally. I think once I get on the pitch, everything will be as usual, and there won’t be any need for doing that (leaving the pitch in protest).
Q: After the announcement, and after all the reactions from abroad, do you consider engaging in some campaigns for the LGBTQ community?
I am aware that there is the attention and interest now, and a lot of people from the community have reached to me to ask if I’d be at the forefront, to become sort of a face of the community. But I don’t really want to do this now, I don’t want to be some kind of a famous face of the community. I respect it, I know how the community feels, but I don’t want to be the face of any campaigns, I don’t want to do this now.
Q: By the way, in all the reactions to your announcement video, I noticed the support from FIFA, while they have faced a lot of criticism during the World Cup in Qatar, where they banned the captains of European teams from wearing the rainbow and colorful armbands. Were you surprised by FIFA’s support, does it mean to you that there could be a change in FIFA’s approach as well?
I’m sure there could be change in the approach. But it’s really important where the world cups are happening. If it’s in Qatar, Russia, or South Africa, the attitude will be different everywhere. There are lots of factors involved, and we don’t even see into the full processes… But from what I noticed, everyone is trying to somehow take a stand, or comment on these issues, which is really important. If everything was staying the same, in the negative sense, that would be a problem. But if there is at least some improvement, some progress, then it’s a positive thing for us all.

🌹 HAPPY VALENTINES DAY FROM THE LADS ❤️

⚽️ Aubameyang '14 / 🎯
⚽️ Aubameyang '40 (PEN)
⚽️ Bellerin '45 / 🎯 Ceballos
⚽️ Aubameyang '48 / 🎯 Smith-Rowe
HAT-TRICK HERO 🎩✨
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his first Premier League hat-trick in today's win against Leeds. He also becomes the first Arsenal player to score a Premier League hat-trick since Aaron Ramsey against Everton in February 2018, coincidently Aubameyang’s debut for the club.
Aubameyang: "For sure the hat-trick means more. I’m a guy who always works hard & tries to give the best always, for first my family & the team as well. It’s been a tough time for me, now it’s time to get the smile back & win games & score goals! From everybody around the club, everyone was giving me a lot of love, to me, my mom & family, so I’m really happy. I’m really proud to be part of this family & I have to say thank you to everyone at the club & the fans as well because I received a lot of messages."
Aubameyang: "Happy, really happy! My kids are going to be happy because they’re going to get it! I’m really happy about the performance from the team today. I’m really happy with today’s win & of course this is for them [the fans]!"
I've missed that cheeky smile 😂❤️
Hector Bellerin has scored his first Premier League goal at The Emirates since January 2018 against Chelsea.
Granit Xhaka has now provided more Premier League assists for Arsenal (15) than Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (14), and as many as Tomáš Rosický.
Arteta: "I’m very pleased with the result & I’m very, very happy with the performance, especially in the first-half against a fantastic team, they make life so difficult for you. I think we handled & read the situations really well & created some big problems. It was great to score four, the amount of chances we created & type of goals we scored, I’m really pleased with that. The attacking patterns that we had, the confidence the team played against a team that are constantly pressing you. Overall, a lot of positives."
A lot positivity on Valentine's Day ❤️ Check out more picture from today's win here

I've gathered you like Thomas Müller (obviously) und Manuel Neuer, so, what about someone not from FC Bayern xD: Marco Reus, yes or no
In fact I really like the German national team and German football in general. I like Thomas both as a footballer and a person, he's not afraid to be truly himself, he's kind of different from other footballers...really goofy in his own way. And Manu is for me one of the greatest goalkeepers in history. I used to play football myself when I was younger and my position was a goalkeeper so I really admired him and could see it from this perspective :)
And Marco: Yes!
I really like german football in general and I don't mind BVB at all! Also, his hero is Tomas Rosický, one of my 2 childhood football heroes as well (together with milan baros). Unfortunately they were both injured a lot during their careers.

Heyo! I'm a Croatian NT supporter. I'm queer and I love football so much. I always said that I would watch the national team of the first out queer international player.
Wich happens to be Czech Republic as of this week. No joke I nearly cried when I watched Jakub's coming out video, I am so happy for him, even tho my only memory of him is me yelling at his team 2 years ago.
Him coming out means that I'm gonna support Czech Republic besides my Croats. I have followed your blog for a while on my main and I remember during Euros 2 years ago, that you post alot about Czech NT.
Now I don't know anything about the Czech NT. So I was hoping if you could teach me a bit about the NT, so I don't go in blindly next month lol.
I could research myself but i know that supporters know more about their team than the internet! So here we are. I'm humbly asking your help on the Czech NT.
I'm a bit scared to ask with my normal account so this is a burner acc.
-a queer football fan
Hi! First of all, I loved the Croatian NT from 2018, and I still have a soft spot for them now. I'm happy to explain a bit of stuff about the Czech NT. And most of all I'm happy for Jakub, and honestly, the response has so far been overwhelmingly positive from the fans, which is great.
One thing that is not talked about (but should be mentioned) is that like two weeks ago, one Czech journalist (Luděk Mádl) made a tweet saying "a Czech footballer is planning to do a public coming out"
He didn't say the name, but people in the comments started speculating, and it turned into a convo of "I have a friend who has a friend who knows a cleaning lady who knows the kitman and he said that the lads in Sparta's dressing room say it's Jankto". Of course, it wasn't confirmed, but still... A lot of people criticized the journalist for posting the tweet and starting this whole conversation when IT WAS NONE OF HIS FUCKING BUSINESS before the player announces it himself, so he deleted the tweet and apologized. Anyway, Jankto came out this week, in a very nice manner I would say. Now everyone is kinda curious whether he will assume the role of a role model, and speak about his decision to come out etc., or whether he will just keep doing quietly his job. We will see.
The current NT is very likable. In the past, we had some shitty coaches, and some shitty (behavior/character-wise) players, or just not very memorable ones, being carried by Petr Čech and Tomáš Rosický (when he wasn’t injured lol). And our previous teams also had some scandals, like drunk driving and prostitutes at hotels etc… This all seems to be a thing of the past, and the current team (including the manager) carries itself with a lot more dignity. The last shitheads left seemed to be Krmenčík (diver) and Kúdela (if you remember the whole Kúdela-Kamara incident from two years ago, where Kúdela allegedly racially abused Kamara during a match between Slavia Prague and Rangers. It’s not my place to speculate whether he did or did not, but Kúdela later mocked the whole situation, so it’s obvious he didn’t understand why it was a big deal. Yeah I don’t like him.) They are both now playing in Indonesia so hopefully they’re not getting a callup again. The rest of the team seems to be likable.
The coach, Jaroslav Šilhavý. He comes across as a gentleman, a really good guy, well-spoken, calm, collected, and approachable. Kind of nice dad vibes. He said a couple days back that sometimes the players are shocked when he uses vulgar language because he just seems like such a nice person who would never say “fuck” or anything. He seems to be reasonable, maybe too conservative in football tactics, but really a good person overall, polite, and fair.
The most known players are probably Tomáš Souček and Vladimír Coufal, and they both represent well what we love seeing in NT players. Hard-working, passionate about football, no celebrity bullshit. Souček is the captain, and probably leads better by example and stamina than by motivational speeches, but I am happy to see him as a captain. Sometimes people say he’s kind of “simple” (he does speak in a way that gives the impression XD), but I think it’s true in the sense that he really just genuinely loves running and kicking a ball and that’s all he wants to do. He’s literally a cinnamon roll.
Coufal is the no-nonsense soldier, who “dies on the pitch for the team” (as he himself says). I admire him a lot, he worked hard, he got to the Prem from the thirddivision of the Czech league (where he was getting “paid” in beer and sausages). And the best thing is, he is no stupid "red card collector" or "just a fighter". He can look like that on the pitch, but off it, he comes across as an intelligent family man. He really embodies the heart and spirit.
Now onto the star. Patrik Schick, he really shined at the Euros, and then last year in Bundesliga. He’s kind of the poster boy, very handsome as well (and his sister is a model; I think he was kinda considering that career as well?). I was pleasantly surprised when I listened to an interview with him that he’s very grounded, down-to-earth, kinda shy, doesn’t enjoy posting on social media too much etc. Plus, he is best friends with Jankto (and I hope he’s being supportive). They usually room together and play FIFA haha, they also did a couple of interviews and challenges together.
(I lowkey shipped them, now I feel kinda bad about that)
I really like Antonín Barák, who plays in Italy (Fiorentina); he commented on Jankto's instagram post, he also distanced himself from a presidential candidate who was using the NT's shirt (with Barák's number) in his campaign, he seems to be one of the "socially responsible ones" in the team.
the rest of the team is kinda meh, i don't know enough about them to really say much - some of them just seem to be boring and with no interests or personality (Vydra), some of them are predicted to be stars (Adam Hložek, he's the starboy, 20 years old, but hasn't really stepped up in the NT yet)...
And about Jakub himself: he comes across as very determined and focused. I listened to an interview with him some time ago where he spoke about how he went to play in Italy at 18, and how he learned to "take care of himself", cook, speak Italian, live on a budget etc. Then he decided he would like to play in Spain so he learned Spanish. He's also into esports and owns an esports team (but apparently he's not very good at them himself, as Patrik Schick always beats him - at least that's what Patrik said). He seems to be approachable, e. g. he appeared in a video quiz done by a Czech football-focused youtuber (who's not super famous). Also, he likes to draw/paint, and did a drawing of Paulo Dybala some years ago. He always seemed to be a very driven person with various hobbies, and I felt a bit sorry for him coming back to the Czech league (and not performing very well). The thing is, he used to play for Slavia years ago, then he was in Italy and Spain, and now he's in Sparta (Slavia's biggest rival), so a lot of people hated on him for that. And he wasn't performing well for the NT and for the club in the past months - which could be related to him sorting out his personal life. He went through a divorce, then his ex-wife sort of alluded to him not paying the child's support (they have a son) in kinda cryptic Instagram posts, the situation around him was a mess.... Now the ex-wife spoke of her support for him, and said that she hopes he can be at peace, safe and happy.
I really hope Jankto's coming out will help people - the players and fans alike - realize how much homophobic banter still goes "under the radar" most of the time here, and that they will become more aware of how difficult it must be for Jankto to be constantly in such environment.

Do you have any merch from your club: I have a bunch from my favorite teams, but only BVB-related: I have three Dortmund jerseys and one yellow Dortmund training jacket (although training is the least it experiences). During matches I often wear my Reus #11 black jersey.
