Rangeelo Rajasthan: Padharo Mhare Des
Jan 3, 2024
Uncategorized
Tumblr media
Having lived in Rajasthan for 18 odd years and some 24 years in NCR, I have always wanted to explore the western side of Rajasthan which includes Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. This land of abundant sun, sand and soil was still mysterious to me and evaded me for long until I got an opportunity to go on a road trip this winter of 2023.
Gliding through the glazing smooth butter roads starting from Mumbai expressway in Gurgaon to Jodhpur in Rajasthan, the drive was very smooth except some parts near Ajmer where some re – laying of roads was being carried on but that failed to dampen my enthusiasm in any way.
We touched down Jodhpur by 3 pm and checked into Rani Mahal, an erstwhile haveli run by a mother daughter duo. This 450 years old haveli purchased by Sri Vinod Sa Bhandari against her wife’s wishes was turned into a hotel in 2014. Little did she know that it would become her lifeline and lifelong companion in the time to come when her husband passed away in corona in 2020. From fighting all odds, facing all challenges to supporting her very young kids and putting up a bold facade and protecting her grieving and vulnerable self, she rose to the occasion and took the reins of the hotel in her hands. Smt Nisha Bhandari along with her daughter Ms Mitali Bhandari,is right here at the hotel in the morning to attend to her patrons, asking for feedback, supervising the property and gradually learning the tricks of hospitality industry day by day. Located against the majestic Mehrangarh fort in Nauchowkia, Fatehpur road, Rani Mahal provides a very unique and authentic experience to the guests of living in the city and of the vibrant markets around.
Tumblr media
The interiors of Rani Mahal are quite impressive. It houses 19 rooms, all of which are done differently and gives you the feel of what life the maharajas and maharanis of the bygone days must have lived .Breakfast at the terrace against the Mehrangarh fort in the winter chill and sunshine is a different experience altogether . Dinner again at the terrace with live folk music playing adds a dash of charm to your excitement .Lunch is served in the cosy ambience of the ground floor .
One can visit Toorji ka Jhalra, a stepwell constructed in 1740 which is very near to Rani Mahal. One will be surprised to see a very modern market that has come up there in the midst of the old city, near clock tower for the tourists; catering to all your couturial needs and handicrafts for your homes.
A 5 mins walk from Rani Mahal will lead you the major tourist attraction of Jodhpur, yes, you got it right! It’s the Majestic Mehrangarh Fort. Indulge in some adventurous activities before indulging in its historic grandeur .The zip lining at 6 levels is a major draw for the adventurous lot. You get an amazing experience of zipping through lakes, above the fort and enjoy some good aerial views of the fort and the city.
Tumblr media
Zip-Lining at Mehrangarh Fort (Agency- Flying Fox)
Once inside the fort, you travel back to old times and remain awestruck looking at the weaponry, the relics, the vibrant costumes and turbans ,the massive palaquins, the huge howdahs used by the members of the royal family. The grandeur and architectural beauty of the fort including the sheesh mahal, Phool mahal have to be seen to be believed.
Tumblr media
The restaurant in the fort offers you some really good Rajasthani cuisine like dal- bati churma, traditional thali besides other cuisines . I can vouch that all over Rajasthan ,you will always find good food . The spices used are qualitatively very good but again you will have to savour it to believe it.
Village safari is another tourist attraction that you can pack in your itinerary. The jeep picks you up from the designated point and the driver cum guide takes you to the Bishnoi village enlightening and immersing you with the different aspects of their culture . Not many know that the Bishnoi community of 15 000/ people have a place in history as we read about the ‘chipko movement’. Some 439 bishnois had laid down their lives to prevent the felling of Khejari trees which are sacred to them .Not many know again that it’s the same community that was behind Salman khan’s imprisonment for the infamous black buck hunting case .They believe that their guru Jambkeshwar has been reborn as Black buck, hence the respect for the creature is something that they will never compromise with. Bishnoi, as they got the name from Hindi words for 20 and 9. They believe in 29 principles, hence the name of the community. The foremost principle of their culture is that they don’t burn the dead bodies but bury them as they believe that a lot of wood is burned and wasted in the process. They worship trees, nature and wildlife. Secondly, they hold women in high esteem. The female mukhiya has a distinct appearance from the rest of the ladies in the family like she wears a red skirt, a red turban, a nath and a heavy anklet .
Tumblr media
The male mukhiya wears a white turban. He prepares very diligently a drink made of opium which is used to relax their bodies and also on occasions like wedding. They do not take any kind of medicines ,whatsoever ,but rely only on opium for any aches or illnesses but they understand that moderate consumption is the key.
As you navigate further into the open village, you can see black bucks, nilgais, peacocks chinkaras and foxes openly roaming and grazing without fear . You also get to see the live workshop by durry weavers.A durry can take 140 hours of weaving by 2 people on the loom. Cotton and camel wool are used for durry making. The former can fetch double the amount while the latter is cheaper and non- dyeable too.
Block printing live workshops are very interesting to witness. It’s amazing to see vegetable colors and natural dyes being used to transform some plain drab cloth into a vibrant and valuable printed cloth. It’s notable that different castes like chipa, Patels, Bishnois are identified by the different clothes they wear . It’s like understanding that clothes are their I – cards.
As we move to our another district Jaisalmer on roads paved to perfection, I see vast stretches of barren land sans any high rises , my eyes unaccustomed to see. As far as you can see, there are herds of cattle, sheep, cows, goats claiming their land ; turbaned men on charpoys leisurely pulling out the day with no haste ; carefree kids playing some local games and women carrying haystacks on their heads to be used as fodder for the cattle or fuel for cooking.
Enroute Jaisalmer, one can see dates farms and vendors selling so many different varieties of dates that we may not even have heard the names before.
There are certain interesting things you can do like jeep safari, dune bashing, camel riding and parasailing on the Thar desert against the backdrop of the rising sun or against the sun set. Both of these times offer exclusive experiences to cherish.
Tumblr media
As I bid adieu to the desert , my heart longs to come back once again and re witness its charm and glory ; savour it’s traditional food ; immerse in the folk music and dance  and imbibe the simplicity of this land of sand.

Patwon Ki Haveli: A Fancy Mansion in Jaisalmer
Tumblr media
Jaisalmer, often referred to as the "Golden City," is famous for its historical forts, beautiful architecture, and vibrant culture. Among its most renowned attractions is the Patwon Ki Haveli, a magnificent mansion located in the heart of the city. This architectural marvel draws visitors from around the world due to its detailed craftsmanship, intricate carvings, and historical significance. Whether you're visiting Jaisalmer for the first time or returning to explore more, a visit to Patwon Ki Haveli is a must-see experience. When planning a trip to Jaisalmer, it’s always a great idea to seek assistance from a trusted Travel Agency in Rajasthan like Rajasthan Route to help make your travel experience smooth and unforgettable.
History and Significance of Patwon Ki Haveli
The Patwon Ki Haveli was built in the 1800s by a wealthy merchant named Guman Chand Patwa. It is considered one of the most famous havelis in Jaisalmer, standing out because of its stunning architecture and the opulence of its design. The mansion consists of five separate havelis, which were constructed by different members of the Patwa family over a period of time. This architectural beauty reflects the grandeur and lifestyle of the affluent merchant class during that era. The haveli was designed in a way that signifies the wealth and status of its owner and the opulence of the desert city. It’s one of those places where history, culture, and art come together.
Visitors to Patwon Ki Haveli can explore its lavish rooms, intricate stone carvings, and delicate frescoes, which all tell the story of the region’s history and the Patwa family’s legacy. The sheer scale of the haveli and the beautiful architecture truly make it stand out as a key attraction in Jaisalmer. To make the most of your visit and learn about the rich history of this place, it’s advisable to take a guided tour, often organized by a Tour Operator in Rajasthan like Rajasthan Route. They provide in-depth knowledge about the haveli and its historical significance, helping visitors fully immerse themselves in the experience.
Architecture and Design of the Haveli
The Patwon Ki Haveli is an excellent example of traditional Rajasthani architecture, blending Rajputana style with influences from Islamic and Jain architecture. The mansion is made of yellow sandstone, giving it a golden hue that glows in the sunlight, earning Jaisalmer its nickname as the Golden City. As you walk through the haveli, you’ll notice the fine details in every nook and cranny—whether it's the intricate carvings on the windows, the ornate ceilings, or the beautiful arches.
The haveli consists of five separate havelis, each with its own unique charm and design. The most remarkable feature of Patwon Ki Haveli is its impressive balconies, adorned with delicate carvings and jharokhas (overhanging enclosed balconies). The ornate carvings depict scenes from Rajasthani folklore, mythological stories, and the daily life of the region’s people. The intricate craftsmanship of these carvings is a testament to the skill of the artisans who worked on the mansion.
Visitors can also explore the beautiful courtyards within the haveli, which provide a peaceful space to relax and admire the artistry of the place. The architecture of Patwon Ki Haveli is a true reflection of the grandeur of Jaisalmer’s heritage, showcasing the skill, creativity, and wealth of its creators.
What to Expect When Visiting Patwon Ki Haveli
As you step into Patwon Ki Haveli, you are transported to a time when Jaisalmer was a thriving trade hub and the merchants enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle. The haveli is now a museum, where visitors can explore the rooms, corridors, and exhibits showcasing the lifestyle of the merchant families who once lived there. The museum displays artifacts, paintings, and photographs, providing a glimpse into the history of the region.
The rooms are beautifully decorated, with wooden doors and windows adorned with golden hues. Visit Jaisalmer Fort: The Golden City Icon
Tumblr media
Jaisalmer Fort, often referred to as the "Golden Fort" or Sonar Quila, is one of the most captivating landmarks in Rajasthan, India. Located in the heart of the Thar Desert, this fort is not just a historical monument but also a symbol of the city of Jaisalmer itself. Its golden-yellow sandstone walls, which shimmer in the sunlight, give the fort its famous name, making it a must-visit for anyone traveling through Rajasthan. The fort is an architectural wonder, and its rich history, intricate design, and living culture make it an essential stop for tourists on a Jaisalmer Sightseeing Tour. After exploring the fort, consider staying at Desert Dream Royal Camp, a luxury Camp in Jaisalmer that offers an authentic desert experience.
Historical Significance of Jaisalmer Fort
Jaisalmer Fort was founded in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal, a Rajput king, who built it atop Trikuta Hill to protect the region from invaders. Its strategic location along the ancient Silk Route made it an important trading post, especially for the exchange of spices, silk, and other goods. Over the centuries, the fort has played a central role in the city's defense during numerous battles and was the residence of the royal family. Today, Jaisalmer Fort stands as a testament to the resilience of the Rajput rulers and their ability to craft a fort that is not just a military stronghold but also a living, breathing piece of history. Visitors on a Jaisalmer Sightseeing Tour will learn about this fascinating history firsthand and can enjoy the majestic surroundings of this golden structure.
Architectural Beauty and Design
The fort's architecture is one of its most remarkable features. Built from yellow sandstone, it blends seamlessly into the desert landscape, giving it a golden hue, especially at sunrise and sunset. The fort is an excellent example of Rajput military architecture, featuring massive walls, numerous bastions, and a series of gates that protected it from invaders. Inside, visitors can explore narrow, winding lanes that lead to several courtyards, temples, and palaces. The intricate carvings, delicate arches, and jharokhas (overhanging enclosed balconies) reflect a mix of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles. These elements not only speak to the craftsmanship of the time but also to the cultural fusion that defined Rajasthan's heritage. After a day of sightseeing, retreat to your luxurious tent at Desert Dream Royal Camp, where the golden desert sands and peaceful atmosphere will transport you to another world.
Key Attractions Within the Fort
One of the most interesting aspects of Jaisalmer Fort is that it is a living fort, meaning it is still home to a portion of the city's population. As you explore the fort, you will come across local shops, homes, and small businesses that have been established within its walls. There are also several key attractions worth visiting within the fort.
The Raj Mahal, or Royal Palace, is one of the primary attractions. It was the residence of the royal family and is a fascinating display of royal life. The palace is divided into multiple sections, including private rooms and ceremonial halls, adorned with beautiful paintings, murals, and exquisite carvings. Visitors can tour the palace and get a glimpse of the regal lifestyle of the rulers of Jaisalmer.
Another significant landmark within the fort is the Jain Temples, which are dedicated to various Jain Tirthankaras. These temples, built between the 12th and 15th centuries, are known for their intricate architecture and beautiful carvings. The marble statues and detailed artwork inside the temples are incredible examples of Jain religious art. The peaceful atmosphere and historical significance of these temples make them an essential stop for visitors interested in history and culture. After your visit, enjoy a relaxing evening at Desert Dream Royal Camp, where you can unwind in the comfort of your luxury Camp in Jaisalmer.
The Laxminath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, is another prominent religious site within the fort. This temple is famous for its beautiful carvings and spiritual ambiance, adding to the sacred heritage of the fort.
The Living Fort: A Unique Experience
What sets Jaisalmer Fort apart from many other forts in India is that it is still a vibrant, living part of the city. The fort is home to several thousand people, who live and work within its walls. This makes it one of the few "living forts" in the world, where the ancient fortification is not just a tourist attraction but a functional part of daily life. Visitors can stroll through the narrow streets of the fort and witness daily activities such as local families cooking, selling goods, and practicing age-old trades. This offers a unique experience that allows tourists to feel the pulse of Jaisalmer’s culture and tradition. As you plan your Jaisalmer Sightseeing Tour, make sure to visit this remarkable living monument and take in the vibrancy of life within the fort.
Sunset Views from the Fort
One of the highlights of visiting Jaisalmer Fort is witnessing the sunset. As the sun sets behind the vast desert, the fort’s golden sandstone walls glow in warm hues of orange and red, creating a breathtaking scene. The panoramic view from the fort provides an unforgettable experience, especially when paired with the peaceful ambiance of the desert. Several rooftops and cafes around the fort offer excellent vantage points where visitors can enjoy the sunset, sip on traditional chai (tea), and soak in the serenity of the surroundings. After the sun sets, retreat to Desert Dream Royal Camp, where you can relax under the starry desert sky and enjoy a memorable evening in the heart of the Thar Desert.
Museums and Cultural Exhibits
For history enthusiasts, Jaisalmer Fort offers several museums that provide a deeper understanding of the region’s heritage. The Desert Culture Centre and Museum is one such place that highlights the rich cultural and traditional lifestyle of the people of Jaisalmer. The museum showcases a range of artifacts, including traditional musical instruments, textiles, and weapons that were once used in battle.
The Jaisalmer Fort Palace Museum, located inside the Royal Palace, is another must-visit. This museum displays several royal artifacts, including costumes, weapons, and household items that belonged to the royal family. The exhibits give visitors a sense of how life was lived in the fort centuries ago and offer insights into the cultural practices and lifestyles of the time. Don’t forget to book a Jaisalmer Sightseeing Tour to ensure you get a chance to visit these cultural exhibits while exploring the fort.
Shopping and Local Crafts
Another reason to visit Jaisalmer Fort is its bustling local market. As you explore the fort, you’ll find numerous shops selling local handicrafts, jewelry, textiles, and souvenirs. The markets are famous for their intricate embroidery, leather products, and beautiful jewelry made from semi-precious stones. Shopping at these local markets is a great way to take home a piece of Jaisalmer's unique culture. You can also find beautiful miniatures of the fort, which make for perfect keepsakes or gifts. After shopping, enjoy the comfort and luxury of Desert Dream Royal Camp, where you can rest after a day of sightseeing and shopping in the fort.
Rajasthani Cuisine in the Fort
Exploring Jaisalmer Fort is also an opportunity to savor the local Rajasthani cuisine. The fort area has several restaurants and rooftop cafes that serve traditional dishes like dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, and ker sangri. Many of these eateries offer stunning views of the fort and the surrounding desert, providing a memorable dining experience. Sweets like ghewar and mawa kachori are also local favorites that visitors can enjoy while taking in the scenic beauty of the area. After indulging in these flavorful dishes, head back to Desert Dream Royal Camp to enjoy a cozy and luxurious stay under the desert sky.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Jaisalmer Fort is during the winter months, from October to March. This is when the weather is pleasant, making it ideal for exploring the fort and other nearby attractions. The summer months, especially from April to June, can be extremely hot, with temperatures soaring above 40°C, which makes it uncomfortable for outdoor sightseeing. The winter months also coincide with various cultural festivals in Jaisalmer, adding to the festive atmosphere. If you're planning a Jaisalmer Sightseeing Tour, this is the perfect time to visit.
Conclusion
Jaisalmer Fort is not just an architectural marvel; it’s a living, breathing piece of history that offers visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the golden era of Rajasthan. Whether you’re fascinated by history, culture, architecture, or just want to enjoy the stunning desert landscapes, Jaisalmer Fort is a must-visit destination in Rajasthan.
