The Situation Becomes Aggravated, Part 1
The daylight was increasing rapidly. Not a window was opened, not a door stood ajar; it was the dawn but not the awaking. The end of the Rue de la Chanvrerie, opposite the barricade, had been evacuated by the troops, as we have stated, it seemed to be free, and presented itself to passers-by with a sinister tranquillity. The Rue Saint-Denis was as dumb as the avenue of Sphinxes at Thebes. Not a living being in the crossroads, which gleamed white in the light of the sun.

Nothing is so mournful as this light in deserted streets. Nothing was to be seen, but there was something to be heard. A mysterious movement was going on at a certain distance. It was evident that the critical moment was approaching. As on the previous evening, the sentinels had come in; but this time all had come.
The barricade was stronger than on the occasion of the first attack. Since the departure of the five, they had increased its height still further.
On the advice of the sentinel who had examined the region of the Halles, Enjolras, for fear of a surprise in the rear, came to a serious decision. He had the small gut of the Mondétour lane, which had been left open up to that time, barricaded. For this purpose, they tore up the pavement for the length of several houses more.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/56f8834c89b0d987d9b1a2ac4637a706/794d2fb473ac00b1-74/s540x810/e2891d546dc7b3717ed4f6488d1574cbf0a4e0a7.jpg)
In this manner, the barricade, walled on three streets, in front on the Rue de la Chanvrerie, to the left on the Rues du Cygne and de la Petite Truanderie, to the right on the Rue Mondétour, was really almost impregnable; it is true that they were fatally hemmed in there. It had three fronts, but no exit.—“A fortress but a rat hole too,” said Courfeyrac with a laugh.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/5e08108bf3ecc1a30064b6d39efb44b1/794d2fb473ac00b1-d8/s540x810/8ca485d02e0ab1fa0818134bd3b121c5cbd8461d.jpg)
Enjolras had about thirty paving-stones “torn up in excess,” said Bossuet, piled up near the door of the wine-shop.
The silence was now so profound in the quarter whence the attack must needs come, that Enjolras had each man resume his post of battle.
An allowance of brandy was doled out to each.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ebc96193e7ce276b29b437993bcf244c/794d2fb473ac00b1-60/s540x810/c98c94ce798d4554139cbd402d2266afd9b32147.jpg)
Nothing is more curious than a barricade preparing for an assault. Each man selects his place as though at the theatre. They jostle, and elbow and crowd each other. There are some who make stalls of paving-stones. Here is a corner of the wall which is in the way, it is removed; here is a redan which may afford protection, they take shelter behind it. Left-handed men are precious; they take the places that are inconvenient to the rest. Many arrange to fight in a sitting posture. They wish to be at ease to kill, and to die comfortably. In the sad war of June, 1848, an insurgent who was a formidable marksman, and who was firing from the top of a terrace upon a roof, had a reclining-chair brought there for his use; a charge of grape-shot found him out there.
As soon as the leader has given the order to clear the decks for action, all disorderly movements cease; there is no more pulling from one another; there are no more coteries; no more asides, there is no more holding aloof; everything in their spirits converges in, and changes into, a waiting for the assailants. A barricade before the arrival of danger is chaos; in danger, it is discipline itself. Peril produces order.
As soon as Enjolras had seized his double-barrelled rifle, and had placed himself in a sort of embrasure which he had reserved for himself, all the rest held their peace. A series of faint, sharp noises resounded confusedly along the wall of paving-stones. It was the men cocking their guns.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/693b2354828cf6801cea4861f352673a/794d2fb473ac00b1-bf/s540x810/a596c2586737aac88d30c7d532e9e252d42d897c.jpg)
Moreover, their attitudes were prouder, more confident than ever; the excess of sacrifice strengthens; they no longer cherished any hope, but they had despair, despair,—the last weapon, which sometimes gives victory; Virgil has said so. Supreme resources spring from extreme resolutions. To embark in death is sometimes the means of escaping a shipwreck; and the lid of the coffin becomes a plank of safety.
As on the preceding evening, the attention of all was directed, we might almost say leaned upon, the end of the street, now lighted up and visible.
They had not long to wait. A stir began distinctly in the Saint-Leu quarter, but it did not resemble the movement of the first attack. A clashing of chains, the uneasy jolting of a mass, the click of brass skipping along the pavement, a sort of solemn uproar, announced that some sinister construction of iron was approaching. There arose a tremor in the bosoms of these peaceful old streets, pierced and built for the fertile circulation of interests and ideas, and which are not made for the horrible rumble of the wheels of war.
The fixity of eye in all the combatants upon the extremity of the street became ferocious.
A cannon made its appearance.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/93dc4ce0f8618063130b32c9653adec0/794d2fb473ac00b1-cc/s540x810/8b059d8a67f81e273f9c2c1cbcb6254c24eae668.jpg)
Artillery-men were pushing the piece; it was in firing trim; the fore-carriage had been detached; two upheld the gun-carriage, four were at the wheels; others followed with the caisson. They could see the smoke of the burning lint-stock.
“Fire!” shouted Enjolras.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b4828273cf5679af258f7e6291ddea4d/794d2fb473ac00b1-ed/s540x810/2d5e7c6737ea83c86cadbc49ee7676beb003c8bb.jpg)
The whole barricade fired, the report was terrible; an avalanche of smoke covered and effaced both cannon and men; after a few seconds, the cloud dispersed, and the cannon and men reappeared; the gun-crew had just finished rolling it slowly, correctly, without haste, into position facing the barricade. Not one of them had been struck. Then the captain of the piece, bearing down upon the breech in order to raise the muzzle, began to point the cannon with the gravity of an astronomer levelling a telescope.
“Bravo for the cannoneers!” cried Bossuet.
And the whole barricade clapped their hands.
A moment later, squarely planted in the very middle of the street, astride of the gutter, the piece was ready for action. A formidable pair of jaws yawned on the barricade.

aaaand more! wow i have lots of complicated feelings about lots of people! you might even call me a Slut
(for max, never sent, original 9/10/24)
I took a long walk today. I walked past your house.
I tried not to, I mean, really, I did- tried to make myself turn due north every block between 14th and 32nd. Tried to make myself just go home.
Walked down the wrong street at first. 32nd Place, not 32nd Avenue. Realized halfway down that my tummy didn’t feel sick enough for this to be right. So I made a left turn at the corner.
First time I laid eyes on the roof, from a block away, from the back: sick with fear and apprehension and nostalgia and, unexpectedly, excitement. Anticipation. Almost bursting with joy.
And I turned the corner. Approached it from the back. Passed the intersection that in my mind is still covered in snow, saw myself layered up against the cold, zoomed in on your black-painted fingernails brushing my chin as you lit my cigarette. The brim of your hat. My dark makeup. Viv’s camera, the flash white hot in the cold dark.
Saw the manhole cover I remember laying on, making snow angels. Snowflakes on our faces, falling into our laughing mouths. Drawing dicks on the hoods of your neighbor’s parked cars, stupid, seventeen.
Passed the wall we used to sit on. Where we used to smoke, where we took that sexy picture, my favorite of the two of us. Passed the spot where Gus used to park, to pick me up for McDonald's breakfast in the morning, his car already hotboxed, full of other people’s DoorDash orders. Sitting in the backseat like a kid, his girlfriend, my lover, dozing off in the passenger seat.
Finally got to, finally passed, the mouth of the alley. Of course I looked left. Saw the car. Even shittier than before, dusty turquoise, chipped and rusted, looked like a flat rear tire, no license plates. Saw the porch I used to wait on when you didn’t get home for hours. Saw the gray pebbled stone I used to squat and piss on when your bathroom was busy. Saw the poor neighbors’ back fence, who we must have tormented. That damn car. We used to drive for hours, you picked me up late at night, the river, the stopped trains, the diner by the airport that stayed open all night. Random parking lots. Dropoffs into nowhere, warehouses, always cold and dark and we were always too loud and too drunk, hiding in dead ends in industrial North Portland. Careening way too fast, way too late, up and down the hills on the way to Sauvie Island, Car Seat Headrest and Radiohead and Jeff Buckley turned up as loud as they could go on your refurbished stereo system, stealing cheap wine from the gas station, parking on the side of the road to smoke on the roof of your car, looking at the stars, not kissing, never kissing, always kissing her and not you.
That night on the playground was different. Just the two of us, Hazel out of the country again. We didn’t invite Viv. Didn't need to ask each other why. Wading through late winter muddy sludge in my stupid shiny platforms, all decked out in buckles and spikes. Up on the ridge overlooking the whole city, all those lights. Your cigarette between my lips, my head on your leather-padded shoulder. Hands that smelled like rust from the metal playground. Hands so cold I put them in yours, and we both put them in your pockets. That night that it would’ve made more sense to kiss you. Wanted to. Don’t know why I didn’t. Then maybe I'd feel better about what happened next. Maybe I wouldn't feel like a liar calling you my ex, saying our breakup traumatized both of us. We never broke up. Because we never dated. Never even kissed or touched each other without someone else there too. KJ, Stella, Hazel. Never just the two of us. Never talked about it with you but i tell everyone else that I was a little bit in love with you. I don't think it would surprise you to know.
I walked past your alleyway and all this came back. And I didn't feel scared. Didn’t feel sick or traumatized, didn’t feel avoidant, didn’t even feel guilty. Felt excited, felt like I was finally maybe coming home. Felt sorry that I hurt you. Sorry that I was so stupid and so seventeen. Why did we stop talking, anyway? What I felt the most was relief. Giddy, childish relief, like maybe I'd get to melt into your arms again after all. Maybe you could light up a cigarette, take me for a drive in your stupid Volvo, like maybe we could have all of it back.
I wonder what you’d say if I wanted to get coffee, baby? Why did we ever stop?

Short Construction Period bolted steel tanks as biogas digester tank
Short Construction Period bolted steel tanks as biogas digester tank
In the quest for sustainable energy solutions, biogas has emerged as a promising avenue, offering renewable energy while mitigating waste. At the heart of biogas production lies the biogas digester tank, a crucial component that determines efficiency and reliability. Traditional construction methods often entail long timelines and high costs, hindering the widespread adoption of biogas technology. However, the emergence of bolted steel tanks has revolutionized this landscape, offering a solution characterized by a short construction period and unparalleled durability.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/17c231b896059cb9547d1f4e10029ac2/8f22d0be6174d8c4-a1/s540x810/cf251ccb19691844cf88db2f060ee8608ca0d862.jpg)
Understanding Biogas Digester Tanks:
Biogas digester tanks serve as the primary vessels where organic materials undergo anaerobic digestion, producing biogas—a mixture primarily composed of methane and carbon dioxide. These tanks provide the optimal environment for microbial activity, breaking down organic matter and generating methane-rich biogas, which can be utilized for electricity generation, heating, or even as a vehicle fuel.
Challenges with Traditional Construction Methods:
Historically, constructing biogas digester tanks posed significant challenges, primarily due to the materials and techniques involved. Concrete tanks, while durable, often require lengthy construction periods and skilled labor, making them costly and impractical for many applications. Additionally, their susceptibility to corrosion and cracking can compromise structural integrity over time, leading to maintenance issues and potential leaks.
The Emergence of Bolted Steel Tanks:
In recent years, bolted steel tanks have emerged as a game-changer in the realm of biogas digester tank construction. These tanks, fabricated from high-quality steel panels, are designed for rapid assembly on-site, significantly reducing construction time compared to traditional methods. The modular nature of bolted steel tanks allows for customization according to project specifications, accommodating varying sizes and shapes to suit different biogas production needs.

Advantages of Bolted Steel Tanks for Biogas Digesters:
Rapid Construction: Bolted steel tanks can be assembled in a fraction of the time required for traditional concrete structures, enabling faster project completion and quicker deployment of biogas production facilities.
Cost-Effectiveness: With reduced construction time and simplified installation processes, bolted steel tanks offer cost savings compared to conventional methods, making biogas technology more economically viable for a broader range of applications.
Durability and Longevity: Steel, renowned for its strength and durability, ensures that bolted steel tanks withstand harsh environmental conditions and corrosive elements commonly encountered in biogas production settings. Properly maintained, these tanks can have a lifespan of several decades, providing reliable biogas storage and digestion capabilities for years to come.
Flexibility and Scalability: Bolted steel tanks offer inherent flexibility, allowing for easy expansion or reconfiguration to accommodate changing biogas production requirements. Whether scaling up operations or adapting to evolving feedstock sources, these tanks provide the versatility needed to optimize biogas production processes.
Environmental Sustainability: By facilitating the efficient capture and utilization of biogas, bolted steel tanks contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing reliance on fossil fuels, and diverting organic waste from landfills.
In the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, the role of biogas cannot be overstated. However, the widespread adoption of biogas technology has been hampered by challenges associated with traditional construction methods for biogas digester tanks. Bolted steel tanks have emerged as a transformative solution, offering a combination of rapid construction, cost-effectiveness, durability, and flexibility that aligns perfectly with the needs of modern biogas production facilities. As the world continues to prioritize renewable energy and waste management initiatives, the integration of bolted steel tanks as biogas digester tanks represents a significant step forward in realizing a more sustainable future.

Fairmont Creamery Company Ice Cream Building
2306 W. 17th St.
Cleveland, OH
Located on the edge of Cleveland's Tremont Neighborhood, the Fairmont Creamery Company Ice Cream Building, at 2306 W. Seventeenth Street in Cleveland, Ohio, has now been converted into active business space, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fairmont Creamery Company was founded in Fairmont, Nebraska, near Omaha, in 1884—an early “national dairy” with operations stretching from the Dakotas to Buffalo, New York. Fairmont was a pioneer in milk can pickup and one of the first creameries to provide farmers with their own hand-operated cream separators. In 1948 the company was re-branded as Fairmont Foods. It also became a Fortune 500 company and was granted a seat on the New York Stock Exchange in 1959.
Fairmont Creamery’s Cleveland operation opened in 1930 in a five-story building at 2306 West 17th Street, directly across Willey Avenue from what is now the Animal Protective League. Designed with two floors of manufacturing space and room for 75 delivery trucks, the facility also could accommodate railcar delivery input and output through its lower floor receiving room. For decades, a variety of dairy products were processed and distributed at the Cleveland facility. Local residents bought ice cream cones at a retail window. Employees from Tremont and Ohio City enjoyed short walks to work.
In the early 1980s all of Fairmont Foods’ properties and subsidiaries were either sold or closed, including the Cleveland operation. The West 17th Street building stayed largely empty for roughly 30 years, save for a small nickel-chrome-plating business that worked out of the basement. Dust, debris, and an occasional squatter were all that occupied the remaining spaces.
In 2013, a trio of aggressive young developers—recent graduates of Oberlin College—stepped in and brought new life to the old building. Ben Ezinga, Josh Rosen, and Naomi Sabe, founders of Sustainable Community Architects, purchased the building for $450,000. Comprising federal New Markets Tax Credits; state and federal historic preservation tax credits; a JobsOhio grant; city vacant property initiative funds; private equity investment; and a Goldman Sachs construction loan, $15 million was poured into a residential/commercial renovation, which was completed in 2015. The repurposed creamery includes 30 apartments and several ground-floor businesses.
Sustainable Community Architects worked to retain and celebrate the building’s history. Walk-in coolers were transformed into bedrooms and gym locker rooms. Huge concrete columns and beams, along with brick interior walls (originally glazed for food safety) became interior highlights. Windows, doors, and signs were rebuilt in the 1930s style. According to Josh Rosen, “the building is a reminder that people make stuff in this city; we wanted to expose the building’s original features rather than hide them.”
At the same time, the property also incorporates the best of the new. Natural light permeates living spaces. Each apartment has a unique design and layout. A 3,500-square-foot rooftop deck offers a place to lounge, garden, picnic and enjoy panoramic views of downtown Cleveland. However, the best juxtaposition of old and new may be that Fairmont Creamery is concurrently a Cleveland Landmark and a site on the National Register of Historic Places, placed there on February 23, 2015, and conforms to modern eco-friendly standards such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Enterprise Green Communities.
The once abandoned 107,000 square foot Fairmont Creamery offers a variety of units ranging from efficient studios to spacious two bedrooms. Every unit features large windows, historic elements like concrete beams and exposed, yellow-glazed brick, and modern amenities. Underground garage parking is also available and multiple roof decks showcase 360º views of downtown Cleveland with more than 17,000 square feet of retail and office space. The building is once again an activate stop between Ohio City and Tremont after sitting vacant for more than thirty years.

The three way partnership is planning a nine-story, mixed-use undertaking with 500 residential items and 42,000 sq. ft of retail on the 29-acre website in Boca Raton. BH, Associated and Pebb haven't determined if the items will probably be condos or residences. Pebb and BH paid $104 million for the Workplace Depot campus final 12 months. Final month, BH and one other accomplice, Delray Seashore-based Kolter, paid $20 million for the previous White Home Inn improvement website in North Miami that's accredited for a boutique condominium. Chapter I
Frost - Share a Tradition - Temple
“we ring the dawn bell"
Frost and Blaze walked down a wide avenue in the early morning light. “Papa, where are we going?” asked the boy, rubbing sleep from his eyes.
“We are headed to the temple,” Frost responded, handing Blaze a rice ball filled with salted fish. “Your Ba was given the honor of ringing the Dawn Bell during the Litany of Light today. We are going to support him and show him how proud of him we are."
“What’s the Dawn Bell?” the boy mumbled around a mouthful of rice and fish.
“Well, the Dawn Bell is what the monks use to usher in the light of a new day. The sound of the bell chases away the night shadows. And its music soothes the heart of unsettled spirits so they might find peace."
Just then, the pair arrived at the Temple of the Morning. A small crowd of supplicants were already gathered along the deck that separated the temple from the great river. Here and there folk held small boats made of paper and wax, a candle held within.
“Ooh, Papa what are those? Can I have one?"
“No son, not today. When the bell tolls, the candles will be lit and the boats set adrift in the current. The Crane believe the lights will help guide the spirits of those we have lost to safety beyond the veil. And the great river is the road they will travel on."
“Look Papa, look!” the boy said with excitement. Blaze was pointing to the roof of the temple where an enormous bell hung. It was made of brass and covered in ornate etchings. “It’s Ba. Hi Ba!” Blaze waved excitedly to a stocky man in robes dyed saffron and deep blue.
Frost gently shushed the boy with a smile. Thunder knelt before the Dawn Bell, facing out toward the river. He began muttering prayers as the pre-dawn light swelled. As the sun crested the mountains and the first rays of sunlight landed on the peak of the temple, the monk grasped an enormous pillar suspended next to the bell by ropes. He swung it back and released it to strike the Dawn Bell. A pure clear tone, deep and resonant rang out over Temple Island. And with it was carried the promise of peace and harmony.

The Amnesiac : ep05
Lofty
My apartment occupies the top floor of what used to be a local bank building. The bank was purchased by one of the large national banks, who then promptly fired most of the employees, replacing them with ATMs and a micro-branch in the local supermarket. I managed to purchase the building shortly after they vacated and leased the downstairs to a pharmacy to cover my loan payment. They signed a twenty year lease, in which we pre-negotiated raises in rent every five years to account for inflation. By the time the lease is up, the building will be paid off, and I won’t have made or paid a penny to live there, but I’ll have a nice asset earned from a clever real estate transaction. Plus, it’s a nice looking building. If you take the architectural walking tour sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, my building is the one they call “Romanesque.”
The pharmacy has a grand, double door entrance chamfered into the corner of the building. My entrance is an unassuming door in the rear of the building that leads directly up a private stairway. At the top is my front door, and across the hall is a little three room office suite that I lease to an up-and-coming video game developer from Sweden named Henrik. According to city zoning laws he’s not supposed to live there, but I think he does. But I’m the landlord and I don’t really give a shit, so I’ll conveniently neglect reporting him to the authorities. Plus, we’ve become quite good friends. He joins me for my morning coffee run a few days a week.
My living space has eggshell white lath and plaster walls and large north facing windows overlooking Lighthouse Avenue, giving the entire space a light and airy feel. A tight, black, spiral wrought iron staircase leads to a private deck on the roof for barbecuing and entertaining. It’s a great space for a bachelor. Urban and roomy with panty-dropping sex appeal, and because of the locked exterior front door leading up to the staircase, it’s is extremely private even being in the center of town.
