This is from The Tale of Dai-Nē book 1: The Mark of Dai-Nē
Vision
You are a seer. It wasn’t a question. “Somewhat,” Keir agreed. “How did you know?” We have watched you since that day. We hunted you as you hunted us, came the reply. Before he could process that his fears hadn't been for naught, the reflection added, No trinket. We will make this bargain for a price. “What price?” he asked suspiciously. A vision, it replied. “I can’t control them,” Keir shook his head. “I’ve never been able to.” A VISION! it demanded. He held up his hands in a calming gesture. “I can try. But I make no guarantee that it will work. You may not get the answer you seek. Will you still agree if this is the case?” he asked. The reflection made a noise that was caught between a growl and a gurgle as it considered this. We will take no more from your world, it agreed at last. Touch the glass, it instructed placing its hand on the other side of the pane. Keir took a deep breath, holding his hand parallel to his reflection. After a moment’s hesitation, he pressed his palm against the glass, moving through it again. He felt the flesh of the reflection and an involuntary shiver went up his spine. It was clammy and cold. Like mud and wet, decaying logs coated in a slimy mold and the scent of dying earth. It was putrid and overwhelming, but only for a second as his vision was blinded by a bright yellow light, drowning out all of his senses. He dropped to his knees, his hand still pressed against his reflection’s, and gasped.
Sniff
“We’ll get through this,” Amara whispered. “I promise. I don’t know how yet, but it’ll be okay.” Tursanay couldn’t speak anymore, only nod. They hugged until they could recompose themselves, then wiped their eyes. Tursanay smiled at Amara. “We look ridiculous,” Tursanay muttered with a sniff and a laugh. “What are sisters for, right?” Amara smiled back. “They don’t care if you’re a mess. They stand beside you and beat up anyone who dares to upset you.” Tursanay nodded, then sighed. “…We’ve got a big list, and we don’t even know all the names.” “I’m bad with names anyway,” Rodney sniffed, wiping his face.
Soup Food
A chorus of giggles sounded nearby and she turned abruptly to see where they came from, but found she was alone. The laughter had seemed like many people and one person all at once, and echoing as if in a large cavern but close at the same time. She frowned. Who was watching her? She pulled back a few tent flaps to check, but found no one paying her any attention. The laughter sounded again behind her this time, but when she turned, she only found her reflection. The nymph’s reflection blinked as she did, a smile creeping across its face as it waved shyly. Only she hadn’t waved or smiled. Curiosity lit a smile across her face to rival that of the reflection as she took a step forward. If she could actually play with her reflection, the fun was just beginning. How did that work? What magic was this? Had it been the basil? Food that was enchanted to grant you a wish? That would be a booth she’d be visiting again soon if so. “Hello,” she beamed at her reflection. The reflection didn’t answer, but she could hear its laughter again.
Hard
“Wait you keep saying veil,” Rodney said. “What’s that?” “The way he explained it,” Tursanay replied. “I think it’s basically what separates the Magic World from our world. What keeps us from being able to see them or cross over by accident.” “Wait crossover you mean, like, as in die? You mean there are things around us right now and we just can’t see them? Does that make him...” Rodney paused and whispered behind his hand to Tursanay. “Does that make him a zombie? Or a necromancer?” “I am a half elf,” Soren bristled, offended he had to be asked. The trio stared at him long and hard for a moment before Rodney found his voice again. “We talkin Santa, video game, Lord of the Rings, or Keebler?” “He’s not a smurf, he doesn’t smell like cookies, and while he is wearing green he’s not on a quest for Zelda, he’s looking for Dai-Nē,” Tursanay retorted. “One thing at a time. Besides no,” she continued before they got distracted. “The veil’s not like that - the way he described it, it’s like our worlds are completely different and completely unaware of each other. Uh... Except for maybe the government thing...” “W-Worlds?” Rodney squeaked. Tursanay patted him on the shoulder. “Just breathe; it helps.” She was speaking from personal experience.

Wuppertal.
