Reading an interview with Mavrik and Louis Robitaille (assistant coach from WJC and head coach for Mavrik and Xavier) in French and now I want to cry: “When you see young people crying, being devastated, you can't believe it. To see their dream shattered is extremely difficult. The pandemic affects young people on a daily basis, but so does mental health. These athletes have worked so hard all their lives to get here and they can't touch it. That's what comes for me, ”admits Robitaille with difficulty.

IL PLEUVAIT DES OISEAUX en tête des nominations du Gala Québec Cinéma 2020

En direct du salon de Guillaume Lambert, les nominations du Gala Québec Cinéma (qui ne fera pas l’objet d’un rassemblement télévisuel cette année, confinement oblige) ont été dévoilées cet après-midi.

En cette année dominée par les réalisatrices, 6 des meilleurs films sont réalisés par des femmes et 3 femmes sont en lice pour l’Iris de la Meilleure réalisation.

On parle bien sûr d’Antigone de Sophie Deraspe (Meilleur film, Meilleure réalisation, Meilleur scénario), La femme de mon frère de Monia Chokri  (Meilleur film, Meilleure réalisation), Kuessipan de Myriam Verreault (Meilleur film, Meilleure réalisation, Meilleur scénario), Jeune Juliette d’Anne Émond (Meilleur film, Meilleur scénario), Il pleuvait des oiseaux  et Louise Archambault (Meilleur film, Meilleur scénario, et 13 nominations au total, le record cette année), et du plus inattendu Fabuleuses de Mélanie Charbonneau (Meilleur film).

Ces films réalisés par des femmes sont rejoints dans les catégories de pointe par les « films de gars » Mafia Inc de Podz (Meilleur film), Sympathie pour le diable de Guillaume de Fontenay (Meilleure réalisation, Meilleur scénario), et  Le vingtième siècle de Matthew Rankin  (Meilleur premier film, Meilleure réalisation).

Un grand oublié : Xavier Dolan, qui a lancé deux longs métrages l’an dernier. On ne s’attendait pas à un couronnement du mal-aimé The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, mais l’excellent Matthias & Maxime aurait mérité plus d’honneurs. Il est quand même en nomination dans les catégories Meilleure interprétation féminine dans un rôle de soutien (Micheline Bernard), Meilleure interprétation masculine dans un rôle de soutien (Pier-Luc Funk), Meilleure direction de la photographie (André Turpin), Meilleur montage (Xavier Dolan), Meilleure musique originale (Jean-Michel Blais) et Meilleur maquillage (Erik Gosselin, Edwina Voda).

Du côté des interprètes, je suis soulagé que mon long métrage québécois préféré depuis longtemps, Le rire de Martin Laroche, ait été au moins reconnu pour les brillantes performances de Léane Labrèche-Dor (Premier rôle féminin) et Micheline Lanctôt (Rôle de soutien féminin).

Il faut aussi souligner les deux nominations comme acteur de Robin Aubert, pour Jeune Juliette (Premier rôle masculin) et Merci pour tout (Rôle de soutien masculin).

Et une pensée pour Andrée Lachapelle, qui nous a quittés récemment, nommée comme Meilleure actrice pour Il pleuvait des oiseaux.

Parlant d’Il pleuvait des oiseaux , félicitations à Will Driving West, un de mes groupes préférés, parmi les finalistes de la catégorie Meilleure musique originale. 

Aussi, je suis très heureux pour l’extraordinaire Je finirai en prison d’Alexandre Dostie, en nomination pour l’Iris du meilleur court métrage.

Quarterback Hugo Richard completed 22-of-27 passes for 327 yards and five touchdowns as the Laval Rouge et Or romped to a 63-0 victory over the St. Francis Xavier X-Men on Saturday in the Uteck Bowl.

Laval advances to the Vanier Cup, Canada’s university football championship, for the third consecutive year.

Running back Alexis Cote rushed for 207 yards and three touchdowns for the undefeated Rouge et Or.

Laval will try to capture its record 10th Vanier at home, after losing last year to Western in a 39-17 game played in Hamilton.

Hugo Richard threw five touchdowns in the first half, as the Laval Rouge et Or blanked the St. Francis Xavier X-Men 63-0 to advance to next Saturday’s Vanier Cup in Quebec City. 0:54

The Rouge et Or have won a record nine Canadian championships in the program’s 23-year history. The team lost twice in the final.

Big hole

Bailey Wasdal connected on 7-of-16 pass attempts for 68 yards for the Atlantic University Sports champion X-Men.

St. F-X found itself in a deep hole early into the game, with Laval scoring two touchdowns within three minutes of each other in the first quarter. Richard hit rookie receiver Vincent Forbes-Mombleau with a 15-yard pass, then threw a 28-footer to second-year receiver Mathieu Robitaille, both converted by kicker David Cote.

The X-Men conceded a safety to leave the score at the end of the quarter at 16-0.

Richard struck again early in the second quarter on a 14-yard pass and run to Forbes-Mombleau. The X-Men saw some hope when linebacker Gordon Whyte picked off a pass. Laval quickly returned the favour on the X-Men’s drive when Zack Fitzpatrick stole a Wasdal pass and ran it deep into the visitor’s zone.

Richard fumbled the snap on a first and goal and the visitors recovered the ball. St. F-X conceded another safety on a punt. Laval put another touchdown on the board late in the quarter, with Richard finding Forbes-Mombleau with a 15-yard pass for the receiver’s third TD of the game.

Onslaught

Following a blocked X-Men kick with 48 seconds remaining in the half, Richard found Benoit Gagnon-Brousseau alone deep in the end zone for another Laval TD to boost the lead to 39-0.

The Rouge et Or onslaught continued early in the first half with running back Alexis Cote powering 12 yards into the end zone. Laval backup QB Samuel Chenard took over from Richard, and promptly set up kicker David Cote for a 10-yard run and another six-points.

Both teams geared down in the final quarter because of the lopsided score of 63-0.

The last AUS team to make it to the Vanier Cup was St. Mary’s, losing to the University of Manitoba in 2007. St. Mary’s is also the last AUS team to win the championship, in 2002, beating the University of Saskatchewan.

Laval will also host the Vanier Cup in 2019, which will be the sixth time the city has welcomed the championship.

QUAND L’AMOUR SE CREUSE UN TROU d’Ara Ball : À l’ombre de Saint-Chrysostome

Ça commence assez fort avec une scène d'ouverture baignant dans le sexe, drogue & rock'n'roll, suivie d'un joli générique. Puis la première scène de dialogues entre Miron (Robert Naylor) et ses parents (Julie Le Breton et Patrice Robitaille) s'empêtre dans la surécriture, l'exposition, la psycho-pop, la philosophie 101… Un problème récurrent dans ce film qui se distingue davantage par sa direction photo et sa trame sonore que par ce qu’il raconte. 

En l'occurrence, l’histoire d’amour entre le jeune protagoniste et une femme beaucoup plus âgée (France Castel), ce qui en fait inévitablement un genre de sous-Harold and Maude, avec quelque chose dans le style de réalisation d’Ara Ball qui rappelle le cinéma de Xavier Dolan. Quant à la séquence qui donne son titre au film (inspirée directement d’un classique cinématographique du milieu des années 1990, époque où se déroule le récit), elle est si absurde qu'elle en est presque admirable. Presque.

Quand l’amour se creuse un trou prendra l’affiche ce vendredi 15 juin.
