42 Reverdy Road, The Rider Household.

Some things about the house that occurred to me whilst building this, under a read more to restrain my ramblings.
General background first;
This is the end of a row of pretty classic English Victorian terrace houses, these are the sort of buildings I've lived in most of my adult life in the UK, and if you ever take the Thameslink south of the river in London you'll see tons of houses like this; especially with the modern extension with skylights and large sliding doors on the back.
They film Alex's neighbourhood in Bermondsey, which is not quite as affluent an area as Chelsea, (because, honestly, would be wild if Alex actually lived in Chelsea) but is still definitely quite wealthy, houses like this one in this neighbourhood would sell for upwards of a £1M in the current market.
Onto design choices for the build;
The downstairs is fairly open plan, and In the show we see several scenes that more or less show the whole thing, so I tried to replicate it as accurately as I could. In the lounge, it looks like there's a desk in the back corner, and since we see Ian has an office, and Alex has a desk in his room, I thought maybe this was for Jack to study, so in the build I added some case files for her to be reading. Also, I added bikes for Ian and Alex and put them under the stairs.
I found the upstairs really tricky - we only see Alex's room, and a brief look at the hallway outside his room, which seemed to lead to more rooms, and the stairs. This made me think he was at the back of the house, as most terraces taper at the back for access to the garden. Also, the window seems to line up with a window we see on the upstairs floor in an exterior shot of the kitchen. I feel especially proud of Alex's room - I think it gets the vibe of slightly messy but active high achiever - there's a certificate by his front door in Hebrew (presumably a Krav Maga thing), so I added lots of rosettes and medals and certificates. He's also got a row of hooks above his bed with like a snorkel, and climbing rope, so I used some of the snowboarding stuff to replicate that, and gave him a desk full of hobby items for boy scout spy crafting.
Jack's room was total conjecture, and also a bit of a challenge, since I don't feel I have a sense for her aesthetic taste in furniture, I tried to think what her room would be like considering she's lived there for presumably most of her early twenties, but this also being not her house/not her family/not permanent. I definitely think it would be nice, and comfortable, and personalised to a certain extent. So I gave her some kinda Ikea-ish furniture, and decorated it with small, movable clutter, and posters, pictures, and tapestries, tapped and blue tacked to the wall rather than nailed in.
Ian's bit was also a challenge, despite being the other room upstairs that we see. His office is categorically in the wrong place, the entry door should be on a different wall. Conceivably, it should be where I put Ian's en-suite, and there's a little corridor leading there, but I couldn't make that work without squishing everything together too much. So I put it in the modern bit, thinking that Ian might have built in some extra protection when doing the extension to add more security to what might be like the 'spy hub' in the house. We also see that there's another door inside Ian's study - for the level of privacy that room would need, it only really made sense to me for that door to lead to his bedroom, which also shows how he never really gets away from his work, when he sleeps right next to his study. So I gave him this kind of self-contained suite of rooms, which makes him somewhat shut off and isolated from the others. Considering how immediately Jack complies with a request for a moment of privacy when Ian is in his office, I imagine there's some pretty deeply ingrained house rules about disturbing Ian's office for 'confidential banking reasons', which makes him harder to access when he's in his bedroom. Also, Jack and Alex share a bathroom, but Ian has an en-suite. His bedroom is nice but bland, with a few souvenirs of his travels and a rack of monochrome clothing for his grey casual wear, and his bathroom is modern and dark, with some medical supplies by the sink for patching himself up after a mission.
The garden, on reflection, is a bit chaotic - I think it should actually be larger, and have a little shed. But what we see of it in Season 3 is different to season 1, it's smaller, more enclosed, and has some pretty high walls all around. I wasn't sure which way to go so left it fairly blank, with space for the wheelie bins round the side, a little patio, some grass, a drying line, and a football. The chaotic bit comes from the bbq I gave them in the corner which, looking at the photos, my Rider Sims must have managed to set on fire and burn immediately. Oh and also to make Ian Alex's uncle in CAS I had to make a John to be Ian's brother and Alex's father, so I Immediately killed him and put his headstone in a corner of the garden, so they can all be haunted by John's ghost. Neato!
#alex rider#wow the powers of hyperfixation. If only I could use this level of concentration dedication and focus for good#Alas it can only be used for dumb shit#sims 4

18: Oil, motors and planes
Ok loves, I've decided to try something to stretch myself creatively with this challenge. I'm gonna dribble my drabble and see if I can tie each theme into an actual story that I'll write day by day! We'll see how it goes! Wish me luck!
Here is my ongoing masterlist of this project.
My other works are here if you are interested!
Check out the fun challenge here by @slowsweetlove . Feel free to jump in too!
18: Oil, motors and planes
You walked, hand in hand, to the cafe where you are to meet up with Callum. Austin opens the door for you and places his hand on your back, guiding you as you walk in. Callum is there, the two hug and are all smiles. Austin introduces you.
“You must be someone special for Austin to bring you along,” Callum says, shaking your hand.
“We just used to work together like ten years ago here in New York, and we just happened to run into one another at the farmer’s market,” you smile and shrug. Callum slips Austin a knowing smile.
You all order and you sit back and listen as the boys talk about what they’ve done recently. Callum talks about how he just wrapped a film about a 1930’s rowing team.
“I thought you looked bulked up, I assume you actually rowed?” comments Austin.
“Yeah, it was brutal,” Callum says, ” You look like you are getting ripped too. What have you been up to?”
“I’m training for these two films coming up back to back. One is a villain and I need to be built and intimidating, the other is about a 60’s bike club.”
“What like motorbikes” Callum asks, his Londoner accent distinct.
“Yeah, vintage Harleys, Choppers. Like motor oil under your nails kinda stuff,” Austin says enthusiastically, “I’m out riding all the time in L.A. with a guy. Open road and a sense of freedom and the outdoors. It's a total adrenaline rush.
“A little different than bomber training then,” laughs Callum.
“Bomber training?” you ask as Austin nods.
“Yeah for our WWII series we filmed, we had to learn how to fly B-17s all shoved into a cockpit for hours,” Callum explains.
“Like for real? You flew them? Are there many left?” you ask, intrigued.
“There was I think one or two on set that could still fly. But no we didn’t actually fly them,” Austin explains, “though I felt like I could by the time we were done.”
They go on to explain the volume with its gimbal-mounted cockpit and surround screens.
They talk about their time together in London. Sunday dinners with someone named Ruthie. “She was like our mom over there,” Austin says.
“Yeah and you earned all those brownie points by showing up early to help her cook,” replies Callum.
“Hey, I like to cook and she taught me a lot,” Austin smiles, “she still texts me almost every day.”
“Do you actually text her back?” Callum teases as Austin looks down sheepishly.

I have some thoughts on Daryl’s arc that I want to share, but I’ll hold off a day or two because 1) it might get ugly and 2) I think Carol/Melissa deserve the spotlight a lot more right now.
Just seeing her on my screen again is a huge relief after so much uncertainty over the past year and a half, and of course the performance is insanely good. What I'm most grateful for is the fact that Carol has a clear emotional drive. We don't have to analyze her micro expressions for hours or turn over every stone to get a rough idea of her headspace. She says it herself. She's looking for Daryl. She's already gone to great lengths to find him when he doesn't turn up at the time he said he would, and thanks to the teaser, we know she'll keep going as long as there's hope he's still alive. I want to see where her determination takes her (once she gets across the ocean I mean), and obviously I want to watch the inevitable reunion between her and Daryl. It's the most anticipated scene of S2, so it needs to be big. Like, unambiguous canon big. It's what the characters and the fans deserve.
Bear with me though because I do have some issues with Carol's first appearance in 106. “God, MT, can't you just look on the bright side?” I could, but then I’d have to lower my standards, which enables AMC to keep lowering their standards when it comes to telling Daryl's and Carol's story. Theirs has always been an inspiring one, not because of all the people they've saved or all the things they've blown up, but because of the emotional core. They're two lost souls who find each other after the world ends, raising each other up to become stronger than the people around them, the audience, and even they themselves ever imagined. Their story is deep. It offers hope to fans facing their own challenges in life, so it has to be handled with a lot of care. Cheap gimmicks are beneath them, but cheap gimmicks are what we get in this scene.
It's a little bit like S7 when she runs into a group of saviors on the road, taking them out with a gun hidden up her sleeve. It reminds me that this woman is one of the most resourceful badasses in all of TWDU. And as a Caryl shipper, it delights me to see her ride off on Daryl’s bike—also badass for the record. To me though, when the nostalgia/shipper's high wears off, these things feel like distractions. There’s not really a compelling twist, like for example, finding out that Carol stowed away on the boat Daryl was on and had been in France the whole time. There's not enough momentum to keep me hyped through the long hiatus. The teaser does the vast majority of that right now, which is cool, but I want to see that same effort to market the show to me in the show itself. I want good writing. I want the connective tissue. I want the payoff. Will we ever see how Carol learned to ride a motorcycle in the first place or do I have to fill in the blanks myself just like I had to do throughout most of S11? Will we get Caryl beats that outdo the extremely unnecessary and OCC nunbaiting beats?
I don't trust Zabel to deliver everything I'm looking for. I don't think he's very clear on who Carol is, what she represents to the fans, or what her relationship with Daryl represents to the fans. Melissa does understand all of that though, so I have hope her input will make a difference. I've said it many times, and I'll say it again. I'm so happy she's back. I'm happy she seems so excited to be back. She deserves everything she's ever wanted for Carol.

“America’s First Car-Free Community”: A Blueprint for Urban Living
In the heart of the Arizona desert, a groundbreaking experiment in urban living is unfolding. Culdesac, just 15 miles from downtown Phoenix, bills itself as “America’s First Car-Free Community.” Built “from scratch,” this innovative development challenges the status quo and offers a glimpse into a future where cars take a back seat.
The Vision
In 2023, nearly 140 residents made their homes in Culdesac, and ambitious plans are underway to expand to accommodate 1,000 residents across 760 apartments on 17 acres by 2025. But what sets this community apart?
Car-Free Living: A Paradigm Shift
No Car, No Problem
At Culdesac, car ownership is optional. Rentals range from $1,500 to $2,280 per month for one- or two-bedroom apartments, with renter incentives that can bring costs down to approximately $1,200 a month. Short-term, fully furnished rentals are also available. Residents enjoy multiple auto-free travel options, including:
Light Rail: A convenient stop right at the neighborhood corner.
E-Bikes: Pedal power for short trips.
Car-Share Station: Stocked with brand-new Chevy Bolt EVs.
Fitness and Freedom
Living without a car has unexpected benefits. No gas or insurance expenses, and it encourages physical activity. Culdesac’s well-designed layout features courtyards, gardens, and an exceptional on-site gym—an amenity that rivals any apartment complex.
Community Connection
Culdesac embodies a people-first philosophy. Social interactions are “built in,” fostering neighborly connections. Movie nights, farmers markets, and friendly bump-ins create a vibrant community spirit. Nate Dicochea, the leasing manager, sums it up: “There’s always something to do and some place to go.”
College Student Appeal
Culdesac resonates with college students who often don’t own cars. The convenience of nearby amenities and the absence of parking hassles make it an ideal choice.
The Road Ahead
Culdesac’s success prompts questions: Could car-free living catch on? The community eyes expansion into Mesa, AZ, and Atlanta. Realtor.com economist Ralph McLaughlin observes, “The emergence of car-free built environments will be an interesting trend to follow.” As America rethinks its car-centric culture, Culdesac leads the way toward a more connected, sustainable future.
Note: Culdesac’s innovative approach challenges traditional norms, but whether it becomes a widespread trend remains to be seen. Stay tuned. 🚶♂️🌿

Whatnot ~ The long road to Saffron
Welcome to Whatnot, where I just kinda talk about random thoughts I'm having at the moment. Irl I say the phrase "... and whatnot" a lot—but do you ever wonder what exactly the whatnot is? That's what this blog will be.
I love me a good, long journey. I don't always know what decisions will lead me to a worthwhile journey, but the best ones tend to arise from spur-of-the-moment ideas and just saying "sure, let's give it a try." For example, this whole GameGirl31 project. Nintendo added GameBoy games to NSO, I noticed how few of the titles I recognized, and I decided it could be a unique challenge to play them. It is now setting in exactly how much time this will take me.
Pokémon Yellow, for instance. I don't know this particular generation super well, but I understand the Pokémon formula well enough. Despite this, more than 20 hours have been dedicated to this playthrough so far. I've only earned four gym badges (five if you count the one I skipped, accidentally?), meaning I'm about halfway through the experience. Just stating the facts here. We can imagine what the timer will read by the end.
I'm actually playing a session right now, taking a break in the middle to write this entry. I left off in the middle of route 14. In-game, I've been really wanting to return to Vermillion City because, about five hours back, I managed to completely avoid fighting Lt. Surge and then leave without the badge I need. That being said... five hours later, I couldn't be stuck on the more opposite side of the Kanto region. There is no quick way back to Vermillion from Fuchsia. I can only press forward. And the next leg of the journey is... the long, long road to Saffron City.
So, I packed as many hyper potions and ultra balls as I could into my trainer bag, and then started on the road. The journey is so long that it's actually made up of 5 separate routes.
Map; for reference, the path between any two cities in the Kanto region averages 1 to 2 routes
I can feel the length of the journey as I begin dismissing the possibility of travelling back to Fuchsia City for the Pokécenter. I'll just have to rely on the resources I've got. The only things to be found along these routes are other traveling trainers and the occasional patch of grass.
I've complained in the past about this game looking kinda ugly, in the graphics department. The overworld sprites are quite simplistic. The colors are limited. Often, it feels like I'm just staring at pencil lines etched in a white void. Yet somehow, the simplicity of the landscape around me as I bike the miles of this road... a true sense of distance sets in. DUCKIE is so far away from home. She's so far from anything that even resembles home. Only passing blades of grass, bushes, a small forest, abandoned fence posts... lines etched into the world by nature itself.
And then I read a sign.
Route 14 / West to Fuchsia City
There's something very haunting about a sign that only points you in one direction. Dead end. One way. Do not enter. Or maybe a highway sign that names a city you've never heard of about 50 miles away. This sign didn't tell me I was going anywhere. It only told me the quickest way back to civilization.
For those who don't know, in my actual life, I recently drove over 3,000 miles across the United States—nonstop except to sleep and eat, over the course of 6 days. It was another one of those decisions that felt so much smaller when it was just an idea in my head. Then I got into the car and drove away from my house, for once with no intentions of coming back. Then I crossed my first state border. Then I passed one last small town. Then, only the lines of rock and shrubs etched in the world around me.
I saw a lot of signs like this one on the long drive. Route 14 / West to Fuchsia City. It's just a practical sign to put up. A statement of fact as to where the nearest market would be, for instance. Yet something about it ineffably reads like a warning.
Subtle game design choices like this leave an impression on me like nothing else. The developers could have written "Road connecting to Saffron City," like they did with every other sign in the game. They could have put up no sign at all. But they chose this sign. I don't know; that made this world feel so much more real to me. And once again, for the first time ever, I think the simplicity of the graphics in this game do a great service to the tone and worldbuilding at this leg of the game. The same scenery passing you by over and over again. Eventually blurring into abstract lines etched in the void. You have grown so much as a trainer, to make it this far all by yourself. This is what it feels like to be far from home. It feels sickeningly lucid to become so aware of the bigness of the world.
That's a feeling only video games can give you, baby! And that's why video games are art, as if I even had to argue that. But who knew such strong emotions could come from a game that looks like... this?
Go on, guess which Pokémon that is. I bet you can't.
And so, I'm actually pretty excited for the long journey to Saffron City. It is, after all, just a small part of the long journey to beating Pokémon Yellow. Which is, of course, only a small part of the long journey to play 31 GameBoy games!
Well, at least for these journeys, I don't have to sleep in my car. :p
That's it for this edition of Whatnot! Too niche for GameGirl, but stuck out too much in my mind not to write about. I hope to do a lot more of these in the future (including non-video game stuff, ideally). Ta-ta for now~

Dutch Culture Shocks for Expats
Experiencing culture shock is a common phenomenon for individuals moving to a new country, and the Netherlands is no exception.
Here are some elements of culture shock that expats from various cultures might encounter when arriving in Holland. Some may be harder than others, depending on your own cultural background.
The idea is to help you navigate the initial challenges of adapting to Dutch culture and hopefully will eventually foster a positive and successful experience being as our guest expats in the Netherlands.
Direct Communication Style. Dutch communication is known for being direct and straightforward. Expats from cultures where communication is more indirect or nuanced may find this directness surprising or even uncomfortable at first. Learning to adapt to this communication style is crucial for effective interaction in Dutch society. You will one day appreciate this direct way of communication!
Punctuality. The Dutch are generally very punctual, and being late is often considered impolite. For expats from cultures with a more relaxed attitude toward time, adjusting to the Dutch emphasis on punctuality can be a significant cultural shift.
Cycling Culture. The Netherlands is famous for its cycling culture, with dedicated bike lanes and a large population of cyclists. Expats from countries where cycling is less prevalent may need time to adapt to the importance of bikes in daily life, including understanding the rules of the road and adopting cycling as a mode of transportation. Driving your car in Dutch towns can be harder than you anticipated as cyclists have right-of-way most of the time.
Work-Life Balance. The Dutch value a healthy work-life balance, and the working culture reflects this. Expats from cultures where long working hours are the norm may need to adjust their expectations and embrace the Dutch approach to balancing work and personal life.
Cuisine and Eating Habits. Dutch cuisine has its unique characteristics, including a variety of dairy products, the famous 'stroopwafels', and traditional dishes like 'bitterballen'. Expats may experience a shift in their culinary preferences and habits, and adjusting to Dutch eating schedules, such as early dinners (some as early as 5:30 or 6pm), can be part of the cultural adjustment.
Holidays and Festivals. The Netherlands has its own set of holidays and festivals with unique traditions. Expats may initially find it challenging to understand and participate in these cultural celebrations, but doing so can offer a deeper sense of belonging and connection to Dutch society. Think of the super popular "Kingsday", which used to be "Queensday" but changed when King Willem-Alexander succeeded his mother as monarch in 2013.
Housing and Living Arrangements. The Dutch housing market can be competitive, and expats may face challenges in finding suitable accommodation (like many Dutch people these days, by the way). The housing styles and living arrangements in the Netherlands may differ significantly from what they are accustomed to in their home countries.
Tolerance and Open-Mindedness. Dutch society is known for its tolerance and open-mindedness. Expats from cultures with different attitudes toward diversity and inclusivity may need time to adjust to the Dutch approach and understand the importance placed on accepting and respecting individual differences.
If you find these shocks a little hard to digest, I suggest you hire a Dutch tutor who can help you not only understand and speak a bit of Dutch, but also understand and start to appreciate its peculiar culture.

i didn't go to school as a kid, so i would spend a great number of my days riding my bike, literally for the whole day. i might come home for lunch and then head out again. i lived in gorgeous colorado on the windy mesa, the outskirts of town. dairy farms all around and an hour from mountain forests. i would bring my picnic basket, books, art supplies, and eat tomatoes and mulberries and apples from our garden while reading poetry. i would go to the market and comic shops and visit my neighborhood friends and wash my hands in the creeks and trespass shortcut on tiny private roads. challenging myself up and down steep hills. getting chased by dogs, making friends with the many horses. no phone, no parents, free. perhaps the best time of my life.

Elevate Your Routine: Explore Everyday Life With Electric Cycling
Life today moves at a relentless pace, and balancing convenience, health, and sustainability often feels like juggling too many priorities. What if there was a way to effortlessly weave these values into your daily routine? Meet the electric bicycle—a game-changer for modern transportation. Whether you’re searching for an electric bicycle for sale or just curious about its benefits, this might be the upgrade your lifestyle has been waiting for.
A Revolution on Two Wheels
Electric bicycles, or e-bikes, have become more than just a trendy gadget; they’re a practical solution to everyday challenges. Advances in battery technology, stylish designs, and user-friendly features have made e-bikes accessible to a broad audience, from city commuters to outdoor adventurers.
What sets e-bikes apart is their versatility. Unlike traditional bikes, they come with a motor that offers pedal assistance. This feature ensures you get a boost when tackling steep inclines or riding long distances, making cycling enjoyable and less intimidating. The result? More people embracing the joy of cycling, whether to work, the market, or simply to explore.
Why Choose an Electric Bicycle?
Here’s why so many people are falling in love with electric bicycles:
1. Smooth and Stress-Free Commutes Say goodbye to the hassle of traffic jams and crowded public transportation. With an e-bike, you can zip through city streets or scenic trails without breaking a sweat. The pedal-assist feature ensures you arrive at your destination fresh and on time.
2. A Healthier Lifestyle Don’t be fooled into thinking an e-bike is a shortcut to laziness! While the motor provides assistance, you’re still pedaling, which means you’re getting a workout. Regular rides can improve your cardiovascular health, boost your mood, and help you stay active.
3. Eco-Friendly Transportation If you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint, switching to an e-bike is a significant step. Unlike cars, e-bikes produce no emissions, making them an environmentally friendly choice. Plus, they consume far less energy than other motorized vehicles.
4. Cost-Effective Mobility With rising fuel prices and expensive car maintenance, owning a car can feel like a financial burden. An electric bicycle is a one-time investment with minimal upkeep costs. Charging the battery is affordable, and repairs are often much cheaper than those of a car or motorcycle.
5. Rediscovering the Joy of Riding There’s something liberating about riding a bicycle. E-bikes let you rediscover that childhood joy of cruising on two wheels but with the added convenience of modern technology. Whether it’s a sunrise ride or a weekend adventure, an e-bike makes every trip memorable.
Everyday Scenarios Where E-Bikes Shine
Electric bicycles fit seamlessly into various aspects of daily life. Here’s how:
Commuting to Work: Avoid the morning rush and glide through traffic with ease. Many e-bike models are foldable, allowing you to carry them into your office or onto public transport.
Running Errands: Attach a basket or pannier to your e-bike, and you have the perfect vehicle for grocery shopping or quick trips around town.
Fitness Rides: If you’ve been hesitant to take up cycling for fitness, an e-bike is a great starting point. You can adjust the level of assistance based on your stamina, gradually building your endurance.
Leisure and Travel: Explore your city or countryside in a way that’s both relaxing and exhilarating. E-bikes are perfect for weekend rides, and many rental shops now offer them for tourists.
Choosing the Right Electric Bicycle
When searching for an electric bicycle for sale, consider your specific needs. Are you looking for a compact, foldable model for city commutes? Or perhaps a rugged mountain e-bike for off-road adventures? Battery range, motor power, and additional features like built-in lights or cargo racks are crucial factors to evaluate.
Before buying, take the e-bike for a test ride. Comfort and ease of use should be your top priorities. And don’t forget to check customer reviews and warranties to ensure a worry-free purchase.
A Lifestyle Upgrade Awaits
Investing in an electric bicycle is more than just buying a mode of transport—it’s embracing a lifestyle that values freedom, health, and sustainability. From daily commutes to weekend explorations, an e-bike can transform the way you move through life.
So, if you’re on the lookout for an electric bicycle for sale, consider this your sign to make the leap. Take the first pedal stroke toward a more efficient, enjoyable, and environmentally friendly future. Who knew that something as simple as cycling could elevate your everyday routine?
Electric cycling isn’t just about getting from point A to point B; it’s about enjoying the journey.
