i also like that riverdale 1x04 has jughead and fred argue in a way that shows the class divide between them and their differences in interests even though the andrews family is always being framed as very working class which feels more like mythologizing than factual like sorry to fred andrews but he owns that construction company he's not the same as the guys on the job and To Me it's nice to see at least one moment of it being brought to attention. like the fact that while there can be a similarity of experiences between the owner of a small construction company and his crew his interests will more often align with the interests of other people who are in a position to own capital even when there's no resonance in character and a big difference in incomes. like it's not even about good vs evil in a person's character but good vs evil in interests which can come from people who are personally good or bad either way. it's also cool to think about how this still falls under creating a heroic myth around archie because jughead wants archie to be more of a hero also as a way to be closer to him and how sometimes reality bends around jughead's narrative so like archie is a working class hero even though his dad owns a business and hires people under him and his mom is a lawyer (and his uncle is a mercenary #uncleflop)

*raises hand* I would like to hear you trash Riverdale some more, please? Now that it's over, I feel like it's a safe enough space to air grievances...maybe.

I've been trashing Riverdale since the getgo, grievances have been aired even while it was airing and I was patently unashamed of it, lol, and I will readily admit that there's nothing that I've said or can say that this video hasn't already said more coherently.

The core of it is just that Robert Aguirre-Sacasa is a bad writer. He is bad at writing, and as such he created a bad show that was largely derided for being bad until he realized he might as well have people laughing with him and not just at him and started making it patently absurd. His characterization choices are bad, his plot writing is bad, his understanding of concept and payoff is bad, his slavish devotion to keeping fans happy at the expense of sensical decisions is bad, his treatment of female characters is bad, his treatment of queer characters is bad, his treatment of characters of color is bad, his predilection for having children in explicit sexual situations with fully grown adults is bad. There's a reason why the vast majority of his projects absolutely fail, because he is utterly talentless at nearly everything except, like, visuals (but even then, Riverdale got exceptionally yellow starting in season 3 and it did look weird).

Like, I think the best way to point out just how bad Roberto's writing is comes from all the way back at the very beginning of season 1. In the week between 1x03 and 1x04, 1x07 and 1x08 leaked on the Internet, and revealed that Betty and Jughead were a couple. This didn't make sense to a lot of people, because there was no indication the story was remotely going there so far, especially with all the emphasis placed on Betty's crush on Archie. But then, all of the sudden, 1x04 has a bunch of Betty/Jughead moments, and like one episode later they're a couple. And clearly this wasn't something that was happening on the fly, the season had all been filmed by the time it started airing, but it still feels like they realized "oh shit!" and were creating this in response to the fans wondering where this was coming from. Even in a pre-planend season, in objectively the best season the show had (but still massively flawed in so many ways), the writing feels very "by the seat of your pants" and like there's no care put into anything they're doing at all. Because Roberto is a bad writer. The fact that his PLL reboot hasn't been cancelled yet is a goddam miracle and a shocking rarity for all his projects.

here we go to my barchie comments on my 1x04 rewatch (yes, i skipped 1x03, so what about it?):

first of all let’s talk about how much betty worries about archie and that’s the most adorable fucking thing ever!

and then she sees him entering pop’s with grundy and immediately gets up to go talk to him and says that it has to be right at that moment and he gets up without any follow up questions and goes with her outside

and when she questions him about his relationship with grundy she looks absolutely appalled (AS SHE SHOULD) and then veronica comes and betty says how it sounds like jail time to her (which yeees, i had forgotten how much the grundy storyline pissed me off) and then archie is looking at betty all soft eyed going like “betty, say something, please” begging her to not be like this because her opinion is what really matters to him but she just shrugs and walks away (which i don’t blame her for doing, most of all when archie said miss grundy was the only one who believed him when no one else did like betty wasn’t there every step of the way, baby girl looked so hurt after that comment) (that being said, this wasn’t archie’s fault, he was in a toxic situation with a sexual predator)

okay, but what’s up with archie thinking that betty would actually expose them on the school newspaper?? like, doesn’t he know his best friend??? at least jughead is being sensible “if there was even a iota of a chance that something could hurt you in any way, betty wouldn’t do it”

then her speaking to him AGAIN on their booth at pop’s and she’s trying to be really fucking reasonable and he’s basically like “if you’re truly my friend, you’ll let this go” and i’m like BITCH, she’s trying to look out for you, show some goddam respect to her and her agreeing but knowing full well she will stop at nothing until she knows archie is safe!

and afterwards she still insists on telling him what she found out because she doesn’t want anything bad happening to him🥺

THEN we have one of their famous walks and he shows to us that he actually listened to her and questioned gr*ndy about her life and all of that, betty listens to his side and gives him advice, because she’s still worried and i love them for it!

ALSO, not really a barchie moment, but i love that when alice comes to get fred and says “it’s about the kids” he IMMEDIATELY goes because he’s a good dad, okay?? the best in fact, love that for him! and the moment before when alice and hal come to his doorstep because alice wants a and b to stop interacting and fred just has this face on like this is a normal occurrence already

NOW, to the best part of the episode, can we start by talking how archie was truly going to follow betty’s advice??? he was going to break things off with gr*ndy after she told him, the amount of trust he has in his girl is *chef’s kiss* then the gang arrives and everything goes to shit! but still betty stands her ground and tells her mom loud and clear that she”ll “never stop being friends with archie” and takes a step further by actually threatening to expose everything about their family that is not so perfect and archie looks SHOOK right before saying that he doesn’t deserve to be betty’s friend, he truly thinks she’s too good for him!!! everything is settled once the bitch leaves

special mention to betty mouthing “i’m sorry” to archie when they arrive

to the last scene now, we have the classic “love makes you do crazy things” entry on betty’s diary, showing to us that veronica wasn’t that far off into questioning if b still had feelings for archie!!!

AND then we have ANOTHER beautiful window scene where archie immediately picks up his cellphone when he sees that betty has hers in her hand (btw archie was just sitting there, staring out his window, meaning he was just watching betty’s bedroom probably thinking about went down and mostly about HER, of course i’m not emotional about this, wdym?) and when betty apologizes he doesn’t even think twice before forgiving her, knowing she was just trying to help! i do love that he never actually got angry at her <3 and then the little smiles they exchange at the end, i’m melting😍
