Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) - Ojaseyehospital
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a potentially blinding disease caused by abnormal development of retinal blood vessels in premature infants. Infants weighing about 2¾ pounds (1250 grams) or less and are born before 31 weeks of gestation are more likely to be affected by ROP. Retina of the eye is the innermost layer, that receives light and turns it into visual information that is sent to the brain.
In Premature babies, the blood vessels that feed the retina haven’t finished growing, and get disturbed growth pattern due to premature birth. When ROP is severe, it can cause retinal detachment and possible blindness. Smaller a baby at birth, more likely chances are that baby will develop ROP. This disorder affects mostly both eyes and is the most common cause of vision loss in childhood and can lead to lifelong vision impairment and blindness.
How common is ROP?
With recent advances in neonatal care, premature babies are saved and not all premature infants develop ROP. Out of 20 million children born annually in India and 0.6 million admitted to NICUs all over the country, about 10% of these infants are at risk of developing ROP. As per the figure given by Clare Gilbert in 2010, there are about 0.3 million blind children (>15 years of age) in India and 10% of them are blind due to ROP. There are approximately 3.9 million infants born in the U.S. each year. About 14,000 are affected by ROP and 400-600 infants each year in the U.S. become legally blind from ROP. About 90 percent of all infants with ROP are in the milder category and do not need treatment.
How ROP Develops?
Eye formation starts at 16th week of pregnancy. Blood vessels begin forming around optic nerve. These blood vessels grow towards the edges of the developing retina supplying oxygen and nutrients. In the last 12 weeks, eye matures rapidly and if a baby takes birth prematurely, normal vessel growth may stop and retinal edges may be devoid of nutrients and oxygen. According to some studies, periphery of the retina sends out signals for nourishment and as a result, new abnormal vessels begin to grow. These newly formed vessels are weak and tend to bleed, leading to scarring of retina and ultimately detachment. This is the prime cause for blindness in ROP.
Risk Factors for ROP
Factors contributing to the risk of ROP include anemia, blood transfusions, respiratory distress, breathing difficulties, Hyperoxia, Hypoxia, Hypotension and the overall health of the infant. The most important risk factors for ROP are prematurity and low birth weight. Phototherapy is also attributed to the development of ROP.
Signs of Retinopathy of prematurity:
ROP shows variety of presentations:
Avascular retina
Scarring or dragging of the retina
Vitreous hemorrhage
Cataract Development
Retinal detachment.
Do everyone need to see retina specialist
Premature babies before 30 weeks of gestation and babies who are underweight are at higher risk. These infants are always advised to visit eye doctor for checkup. Best time to visit retina specialist is preferred within 30 days of birth. Retinal screening done in this period is quite beneficial for the treatment of the infant.
Treatment
Mild cases do not need any treatment, while in advanced cases a variety of treatment options are available. The most effective and proven treatment for ROP is laser therapy or cryotherapy.
Late stages may require scleral buckle or Vitrectomy
Scleral buckle – It is usually done in stage IV or V. A silicone band is placed around the eye, It keeps the vitreous gel from pulling on the scar tissue and allows the retina to flatten back down onto the wall of the eye. This band is removed later as eye continues to grow; otherwise infant will develop myopia.
Vitrectomy – This is performed in stage V only and involves removing the vitreous and replacing it with a saline solution. Once vitreous has been removed, the scar tissue on the retina can be peeled back, allowing the retina to relax and lay back down against the eye wall.

High Myopia Symptoms Type Causes & Treatment
High myopia, also referred to as severe or pathological myopia, is an uncommonly high degree of nearsightedness (myopia). With high myopia, individuals typically exhibit an eyeball that protrudes too far behind the retina instead of directly on it causing light entering to focus in front of it instead of directly onto it and leading to blurred distance vision while near vision may remain clear.
High myopia is defined by refractive errors exceeding -6.00 diopters; however, its severity can differ among individuals, with some experiencing refractive errors of greater than -8.00 or even exceeding -10.00 diopters. It typically appears in children or adolescence and progresses gradually over time.
Regular eye examinations for those suffering from high myopia are essential in monitoring any changes to vision and early identification of potential complications. Sanjeevan Netralaya's Advanced Ayurvedic eye care has achieved impressive results in treating High Myopia. Through their patient-centric approach, personalized treatment plans are meticulously tailored to each individual's specific requirements and pain-free experiences are ensured without discomfort or side effects.
Tumblr media
What are the symptoms of High Myopia?
High myopia (or severe myopia) is defined by an unusually high degree of nearsightedness. While its symptoms vary according to each individual, common manifestations include:
· Blurred Distance Vision: When objects in the distance appear blurry or out-of-focus, near vision may still remain clear.
· Difficulty with Distance Vision: People suffering from high myopia often struggle to see distant objects such as street signs, whiteboards and faces from far away.
· Squinting or Eye Strain: Individuals with high myopia often strain their eyes when trying to focus on distant objects clearly, leading them to squint or strain their vision in an attempt to improve their vision.
· Eye Fatigue: Prolonged visual tasks such as reading or using the computer may cause eye fatigue and discomfort for individuals with high myopia.
· Poor distance vision can cause headaches when engaging in activities that require visual focus, leading to frequent headaches as a result of straining eyes.
· Difficulties with Night Vision: High myopia may result in impaired night vision, making it challenging to see clearly in low-light conditions.
· Increased Sensitivity to Glare: People suffering from high myopia may be particularly sensitive to bright lights and glare, leading to discomfort and vision difficulties.
· Squinting or Holding Objects Close: Individuals with high myopia often unconsciously compensate for their blurred distance vision by unconsciously squinting or holding objects closer to their face in order to see them more clearly.
Considerations should be given to the fact that these symptoms could also indicate other eye issues; to receive an accurate diagnosis it is vital to visit an eye care professional for a comprehensive eye examination and diagnosis. Regular check-ups for individuals with high myopia are especially essential in monitoring their eye health and detecting potential complications like retinal detachment or macular degeneration which could result from having such condition.
Sanjeevan Netralaya’s Advanced Ayurvedic eye care stands as a highly effective treatment modality for High Myopia. At Sanjeevan Netralaya, each patient receives personalized attention, benefiting from meticulously crafted treatment plans that are uniquely tailored to address their specific needs. These specialized interventions prioritize patient comfort, offering a painless and comfortable experience, completely devoid of any associated discomfort or side effects.
What are the causes of High Myopia?
The exact causes of high myopia, also known as severe or pathological myopia, are not fully understood. However, several factors have been identified as potential contributors to its development. These causes include:
· Genetic Factors: There is a strong genetic component to myopia, including high myopia. Individuals with who have a family history are more likely to develop high myopia. Multiple genes are believed to play a role in determining the development and progression of myopia.
· Environmental Factors: Environmental factors, such as prolonged near work activities (such as reading, writing, or using electronic devices) and lack of outdoor activities, have been associated with an increased risk of myopia development, including high myopia. Insufficient exposure to natural light and spending excessive time on close-up tasks may contribute to the elongation of the eyeball.
· Structural Abnormalities of the Eye: In individuals with high myopia, the eyeball is often longer than normal, which leads to the focusing of light rays in front of the retina instead of directly on it. Structural abnormalities of the cornea or lens may also contribute to the development of high myopia.
· Imbalance in the Growth of Eye Components: The growth and development of the eye involve complex processes that require a delicate balance. In high myopia, there may be an imbalance in the growth of certain eye components, such as the sclera (the white outer layer of the eye), choroid (the vascular layer beneath the retina), and retina, leading to excessive elongation of the eyeball.
· Hormonal and Systemic Factors: Some studies suggest that hormonal and systemic factors, such as changes during puberty or hormonal imbalances, may influence the development of high myopia. However, further research is needed to establish a clear link.
It's important to note that while these factors are believed to contribute to the development of high myopia, the condition is likely influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. High myopia can also be influenced by individual variations and interactions between these factors. Further research is needed to fully understand the underlying causes of high myopia and its complex interplay with various factors.
Sanjeevan's Advanced Ayurvedic eye care is effective in treating High Myopia. Sanjeevan Netralaya treats each patient with a unique treatment plan. The specialised treatments are tailored to the individual and cause no pain, discomfort, or side effects. It is important to have your eyes examined regularly so book your appointment now!

7 Best Lasik Eye Surgery Centers in India
Tumblr media
Lasik eye surgery has made eyeglasses passé. For who would not want to flaunt their eyes out in the open? I am sure all of us would like to get rid of the cage our eyes have to be continuously in, no matter how stylishly we wear them, we still aspire to be free from them. Lasik eye surgery has given hope to millions who suffer from myopia (nearsightedness), astigmatism (refractive error of the eye), &hypermetropia (farsightedness), and even presbyopia (insufficiency of eyes due to aging) in some cases.
However, any correction or surgery if not required, should not be undertaken, so goes the adage. Like all other surgeries, even this one has its limitations and involves risks. Dry eyes, halos, ocular neuropathic pain, and subconjunctival hemorrhage, are some of the non-serious adverse effects of Lasik surgery.
However, flapped discs, higher-order aberrations, uveitis, slipped flap, retinal detachment, Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and tendencies of depression and suicide (less commonly observed) in patients can be seen as more severe expressions of risks from the surgery. Thus, "if not required, do not attempt it" is the apparent suggestion good hospitals and doctors would provide you. However, if it becomes mandatory at some point in your life, do make sure you choose from some excellent hospitals where doctors can prevent corneal thinning in the best possible way during the surgery.
Generally, 25-40 years is the apt age to undergo Lasik eye surgery even though the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has approved Lasik eye surgery for patients 18 years of age and above in the United States. Doctors generally do not suggest it below 25 years of age except in special cases. Vision correction also does not mean that you will never need glasses or lenses again. This is a myth and instead what is more appropriate to say in this regard, is that your numbers going forth might not be so high as they used to be before.
If you are pregnant or already have thin cornea or a lot of vision change prescriptions, do not attempt Lasik eye surgery. Once your power stabilizes and you do not have any power changes for six months or above, only then try Lasik eye surgery after thorough consultation with your ophthalmologist.
So, without any further delay, let us find out which hospitals can tackle the surgery well in our country. Below we have listed the seven best hospitals for Lasik eye surgery in India.

Understanding Lasik Eye Surgery: One View Reform Success
The way people treat their vision issues has changed due to a technique that is in the form of lasik eye surgery treatment. To improve vision without the requirement of glasses or contact lenses, it resumes laser-aid surgery on the cornea. The efficacy of Lasik treatment, security, and cost concerns are common in those who think of achieving it. Lasik has become one of the best-liked and most effective vision improvement techniques globally because of its development in medical technology.
Is Lasik surgery safe?
When a person is discussing Lasik, one of the most frequently asked questions is, Is Lasik Surgery safe? For decades, treatment has been done with low risk of complications and high success rates. The dazzling, dry eyes and dangers of surrounding lights have reduced thanks to the progress in lasik surgery technology. Most people recover quickly and have better results in a day or two. Every surgery has risks, especially with patients who have underlying issues.
Consult a skilled ophthalmologist to find out your eye condition to decide.
Laser treatment for eyesight cost in india
If you need surgery, the first thing that you need for that is money, or how much money you will need for the treatment. Even if they provide better accuracy, such as lasik eye surgery cost, smile surgery, or bladeless lasik, you need to see everything before proceeding with the surgery.
Since many respectable eye hospitals in India offer affordable packages, lasik is a seductive solution for anyone seeking long-term vision improvements.
What will lasik eye surgery do?
Laser not only helps improve vision but it also reshapes the cornea. This allows light to focus properly on the retina. Under local anesthesia, surgery occurs quickly; it usually takes 15 minutes for both eyes. A thin flap is made on the cornea during Lasik, and the surgeon uses a laser for the reorganization of the underlying tissue before moving the flap.
Within a few days, patients can return to their regular activities without any pain. Visible, foresight, and proximity can all benefit from Lasik, which provides long-term vision improvements.
Is Lasik’s surgery covered by insurance?
Is Lasik surgery covered by insurance? There is a subject for many people because not everyone has money. Insurance companies usually do not cover Lasik because it is considered an alternative operation instead of medically necessary.
However, through employer-proposed health schemes or vision insurance providers, some insurance plans provide discounts or partial coverage for LASIK. Patients can also see health savings accounts (HSA) or flexible expense accounts (FSA) to help control the expenses of Lasik treatment.
The Success Rate of Laser Vision Correction
The success rate of these LASIK surgical treatment achievements is good, and this is the reason you don’t need to worry about them too much. LASIK is now more secure and powerful because of the technology used in the procedure of these surgeries.
Laser vision correction can help you see again, which will be a good as well as a beautiful part of your life. Many humans will have a clear vision for the rest of their lives with LASIK if they take the proper measures and cope with themselves.
Conclusion: Is LASIK Worth It?
People who are using lenses or glasses to see clearly and have issues can now remove these problems from their lives, which they face every day. Even if it’s a good way to help your eyesight, the cost can become an issue for people who don’t have a lot of money in their hands. Still, laser treatment for eyesight can give you long-term benefits if you invest in them on time

Best Lens for Cataract Surgery in India – AV Meditech
Cataracts are one of the most common vision problems in India, affecting millions of people, especially as they age. The only effective treatment for cataracts is cataract surgery, where the cloudy natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL). Choosing the best lens for cataract surgery in India is crucial for achieving clear vision and long-term eye health. At AV Meditech, we offer a wide range of premium IOLs designed to deliver outstanding surgical outcomes and improve patients' quality of life.
Understanding Intraocular Lenses (IOLs)
An intraocular lens (IOL) is an artificial lens implanted in the eye after the removal of a cataract. Modern IOLs are designed to restore sharp, clear vision by correctly focusing light on the retina. Selecting the right lens for cataract surgery depends on various factors, including lifestyle, visual needs, and budget.
Types of IOLs for Cataract Surgery
At AV Meditech, we provide high-quality IOLs that cater to different vision requirements. Here are the most commonly used options:
1. Monofocal IOLs
🔹 Correct vision at a single distance (near or far) 🔹 Most cost-effective option 🔹 Ideal for those comfortable using glasses for certain activities
2. Multifocal IOLs
🔹 Provide vision at multiple distances (near, intermediate, and far) 🔹 Reduce dependence on glasses 🔹 Best suited for active individuals who want greater visual freedom
3. Trifocal IOLs
🔹 Provide superior vision clarity at all distances 🔹 Reduce glare and halos for sharper, clearer sight 🔹 One of the best lenses for cataract surgery in India for patients seeking full independence from glasses
4. Toric IOLs
🔹 Specifically designed for patients with astigmatism 🔹 Corrects blurred vision caused by an irregular cornea 🔹 Enhances clarity and eliminates the need for additional corrective lenses
5. Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs
🔹 Offer a continuous range of vision from near to far 🔹 Minimize night vision disturbances 🔹 Perfect for individuals with active lifestyles who want a glasses-free experience
How to Choose the Best Lens for Cataract Surgery in India?
Selecting the best IOL depends on several factors:
✔️ Vision Goals – Do you want to eliminate the need for glasses entirely or use them occasionally? ✔️ Budget – Monofocal IOLs are affordable, while advanced trifocal and EDOF lenses provide superior vision correction. ✔️ Existing Eye Conditions – If you have astigmatism, a toric IOL is necessary for sharper vision. ✔️ Night Vision Needs – Patients with night glare issues benefit from EDOF or premium multifocal lenses.

Eye Care for Diabetic Retinopathy: Diagnosis & Treatment
Tumblr media
Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of vision impairment and blindness, especially among individuals living with diabetes. This condition develops due to prolonged high blood sugar levels, which gradually damage the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive part of the eye. In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy often has no noticeable symptoms, making regular eye check-ups critical for timely detection. However, as it progresses, it can lead to blurred vision, dark spots, and, ultimately, irreversible vision loss if left untreated.
With diabetes becoming increasingly prevalent in India, awareness about diabetic retinopathy surgery is vital. Managing blood sugar levels alone is insufficient; proactive eye care is essential to prevent complications. This blog will help you understand the condition, its risk factors, and the advanced treatment options available to protect your vision and maintain your quality of life.
If you or a loved one has diabetes, this guide is an important step toward safeguarding your eyesight. Read on to learn how early diagnosis and timely treatment can make all the difference.
What is Diabetic Retinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy occurs when prolonged high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. This damage can cause these blood vessels to leak fluid or blood, leading to vision problems. Over time, the condition may progress, resulting in severe complications such as retinal detachment or glaucoma.
Tumblr media
How High Blood Sugar Levels Damage the Retina
When blood sugar levels remain elevated for long periods, the tiny blood vessels in the retina experience stress. This stress can result in:
Swelling (macular edema): Fluid leaks into the retina, causing it to swell and blur vision.
Blockages: Poor blood flow deprives the retina of oxygen and nutrients.
Abnormal blood vessel growth :  In advanced stages, fragile new blood vessels form, which can break and bleed, worsening the damage.
Symptoms and Risk Factors of Diabetic Retinopathy
Symptoms to Watch Out For:
Blurred or fluctuating vision
Dark spots or floaters
Difficulty seeing at night
Vision loss in one or both eyes
Key Risk Factors:
Poorly managed blood sugar levels
Long-term diabetes
High blood pressure and cholesterol

Stages of Diabetic Retinopathy
Mild Non-Proliferative Retinopathy: Early stage marked by minor blood vessel swelling. Often asymptomatic.
Moderate Non-Proliferative Retinopathy: Progression with blood vessel blockages and possible leakage.
Severe Non-Proliferative Retinopathy: Increased blockages and retina deprivation, setting the stage for new vessel growth.
Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy: Advanced stage with fragile new vessels, leading to bleeding, retinal detachment, or severe vision loss.

Treatment Options for Diabetic Retinopathy
Effective management of diabetic retinopathy depends on the severity of the condition and the stage at which it is diagnosed. Modern treatment methods aim to control the progression of the disease, manage complications, and preserve as much vision as possible. Here are the key treatment options:
1. Laser Therapy (Photocoagulation)
Laser therapy is a widely used and highly effective cure for diabetic retinopathy, particularly in its early stages. The procedure involves using focused laser beams to seal or shrink damaged blood vessels in the retina.
Benefits: Prevents further leakage of blood and fluids into the retina and reduces the risk of vision loss.
Suitability: Effective for patients with macular edema or moderate non-proliferative retinopathy.
Recovery: It’s an outpatient procedure with minimal downtime, although patients may experience temporary blurring of vision after the treatment.
2. Anti-VEGF Injections
Anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) injections are among the most advanced treatments for diabetic macular edema and proliferative retinopathy. These medications inhibit abnormal blood vessel growth and reduce retinal swelling.
Procedure: The medication is injected directly into the eye under sterile conditions. Multiple injections may be required over time for optimal results.
Effectiveness: These injections have shown remarkable success in stabilising or improving vision in patients.
3. Vitrectomy Surgery
Vitrectomy is a surgical procedure recommended for advanced cases of diabetic retinopathy, such as retinal detachment, severe bleeding (vitreous hemorrhage), or extensive scarring.
Procedure: The surgeon removes the vitreous gel and any blood or scar tissue from the eye, allowing light to reach the retina effectively.
Recovery: Patients typically require several weeks to recover fully, and vision improvement may take time.
Benefits: Restores visual clarity and prevents further complications.
4. Panretinal Photocoagulation (PRP)
This specialised laser treatment is used for advanced stages, such as proliferative diabetic retinopathy. PRP involves creating small burns in the retina to shrink abnormal blood vessels and reduce the risk of bleeding.
Impact: Reduces oxygen demand in the retina, which helps stabilise the condition.
Side Effects: Peripheral vision or night vision may be slightly affected, but the procedure protects central vision.
5. Combination Treatments
In some cases, a combination of treatments, such as laser therapy, injections, and surgery, may be required to manage the condition effectively. The treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s specific needs and the stage of retinopathy.
The Importance of Regular Eye Check-Ups
Routine eye examinations are crucial for individuals with diabetes, even without symptoms. Early detection of diabetic retinopathy can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes. At least one comprehensive eye exam per year is recommended for all diabetic patients.
Tips for Prevention:
Maintain optimal blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.
Maintain optimal blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.
Follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly.
