Time for another of those "look at a list of Great Novels and see how many I've read" things - though my memory does begin to fail me a bit, especially when it comes to 'worthy' books that I may have heard *of* a lot but not actually read.

The SaVAge K'lub was first conceived by in 2010 and is named in reference to a historical gentleman's club first established in London in the nineteenth century. Raymond's version has drawn on the cultural stereotype and decor of such exclusive institutions, while removing the gendered and elitist aspect entirely.

Transcendence is an exploration of collage as a voice for non-binary gender identity. Ezra’s Master’s thesis constituted a practice-led, artistic inquiry into the potential of queer collage as a visual communication device for expressing the identity and perspectives of a non-binary person navigating a world of gender conformity.

HANKY PANKY

1913

Hanky Panky (or Hanky-Panky) is a musical revue written by A. Baldwin Sloane (music), E. Ray Goetz (lyrics), and Edgar Smith (book). The revue was produced by Lew Fields. The show was staged by Gus Sohlke. It was billed as the “Jollie Follie” - a “Jumble of Jollification in Two Acts”. 

The score featured uncredited contributions by Irving Berlin, Ballard MacDonald, Harry Cooper, and Joe Cooper. As the show continued, songs were added by Henry Clay Smith, James V. Monaco, Raymond A. Browne, and Edith Maada Lessing.  Talk about  a “Jumble”!  

Lew Fields (1867-1941) was born Moses Schoenfeld. He was an actor, comedian, vaudeville star, theatre manager, and producer. He was most notably part of a comedy duo with Joe Weber. The duo broke up the act in 1904 and went on to solo work, with Fields also producing. He did not appear in Hanky Panky. 

Instead of getting to Atlantic City at once, the revue got to Atlantic City eventually, starting life in Chicago, where Fields opened a theatre called Lew Fields’ American Music Hall, where “gentleman may smoke”.  It opened there on October 31, 1911. 

It was deemed a “rambling revue” but was a hit with audiences, who kept it in Chicago until the end of January 1912. 

Although actors had character names, the revue offered very little in the way of plot. It humorously describes Cleopatra as a woman “who has been in cold storage for a matter of two thousand years.”

“Ragtime Opera” and “The Million Dollar Ball” (added later) are both by Irving Berlin, with Goetz contributing to the latter.  

The score had a few breakout hits, earning some income in tin pan alley. Notable among the score is “Where The Edelweiss is Blooming”, “Those Were the Happy Days”... 

...and “Oh! You Circus Day.” The song was not in the show from the start, but was added later on. 

An interpolated hit song was titled “On the Mississippi” by Ballard MacDonald and Harry Carroll. 

The show covered America for several months until arriving on Broadway at the Broadway Theatre on August 5, 1912. This was not the Broadway Theatre that exists today, but the former Metropolitan Concert Hall at Broadway and 41st Street, built in 1888 and razed in 1929. Florence Moore made her Broadway debut. 

Hanky Panky was on Broadway until November 2, 1912 after 104 performances. What was a “Jumble of Jollification” in the Windy City became a “Humdrum Hodge Podge” in the Big Apple. Florence Moore was consistently singled out for her comedic skills. 

After Broadway, the show went back on tour. In Canada, there was a controversy over the show’s content that mainly played out in the newspapers. 

taking its time to get to the seaside, where it opened in Atlantic City at the Apollo Theatre on the Boardwalk on August 11, 1913.  The engagement helped mark the show’s 750th performance. 

That week, Atlantic City experienced record tourism, The Philadelphia Inquirer estimating crowds at 300,000. The Hanky Panky cast took advantage of the numbers. It was later discovered that the girls adopting male swimsuits were in fact the chorus girls from Hanky Panky. [At the time, men’s bathing costumes included shorts and a muscle tee top, so while there was no actual upper body nudity on display, the chorines did show more leg than was allowed]. 

But that wasn’t the only stunt. Star Florence Moore assisted the show’s press manager in distributing free tickets to beach-goers and Boardwalkers from Richards’ Pavilion, where she released toy balloons filled with free passes. A minor kerfuffle ensued. 

"On Tuesday [the show’s press manager] engineered a toy balloon advertising stunt which caused a near-panic on the beach through the eagerness of strollers and bathers to capture those with orders for seats attached to them. Several persons got mixed up in a scrap, some received beautifully adorned eyes, while others had their favorite corns trampled upon. It was a good bit of advertising, and aided in bringing big box office returns. But really in a crowd such as has been here during the week it seems folly to indulge in any such methods. The show is known from coast to coast, and the people who like light and airy amusement would have gone to see it without any undue excitement. A midsummer crowd, which includes thousands of ruralites who rarely go to a theatre, except when they come here and then go home and tell their neighbors all about it, is sure to patronize any old thing that is half worth while.”  ~ PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER

In February 1914, Florence Moore and much of the Hanky Panky company were seen in a new show titled The Pleasure Seekers. The show was set in the dining rooms of Ritz-Carlton hotels in New York, Switzerland, and Paris. Seven years later there would be a Ritz-Carlton on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City.

E. Lynn Harris

Everette Lynn Harris (June 20, 1955 – July 23, 2009) was an American author. Openly gay, he was best known for his depictions of African-American men who were on the down-low and closeted. He authored ten consecutive books that reached The New York Times Best Seller list, making him among the most successful African-American or gay authors of his era.

Biography

Born Everette Lynn Jeter in Flint, Michigan, Harris moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, with his mother at the age of 3. Upon his mother's marriage to Ben Harris, his surname was changed to Harris. By the time he was 13 years old, his mother divorced his stepfather who had abused Harris for years.

Harris was one of the first African-American students at Forest Heights Junior High and Hall High School in Little Rock. Generally well-liked by his classmates, two of his closest friends were Karen Krenz and Becka Henry. Harris also had homes in Houston, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia, and Fayetteville, Arkansas. In his writings, Harris maintained a poignant motif, occasionally emotive, that incorporated vernacular and slang from popular culture.

Harris became the first black male cheerleader as well as the first black yearbook editor while attending the University of Arkansas.After graduation, he became a computer salesman with IBM, AT&T, and Hewlett-Packard for 13 years living in Dallas, Texas, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. In 1990, Harris attempted suicide during a dark phase of depression and heavy drinking but later found the will to live through his writing. Harris relieved himself of his salesman duties and quit in order to begin writing his first novel. Harris was initially unable to land a book deal with a publishing house for his first work, Invisible Life, so he published it himself and sold copies from his car trunk. He later was published by Doubleday, and ten of his novels achieved New York Times bestseller status.

Death

Harris died July 23, 2009, while in Los Angeles for a business meeting. He was found unconscious at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, and was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. An autopsy determined that the cause of death was heart disease. That same day, Harris had fallen ill on the train to Los Angeles and blacked out but was fine after, according to his publicist Laura Gilmore.

Invisible Life

Harris' first novel, Invisible Life finished in 1991, was a coming-of-age story dealing with then-taboo topics. Most important was that it openly questioned sexual identity and told the story of main character Raymond Tyler. Tyler, torn between his married male lover and girlfriend Nicole, is a New York attorney struggling with identifying as a bisexual black man. He ultimately settles into gay life, while much of the novel is dedicated to Tyler's reflection on that choice.

Any Way the Wind Blows

Harris' 2002 novel, Any Way the Wind Blows, is the sequel to his previous book, Not A Day Goes By. It follows the jilted Yancey Harrington as she pursues success and stardom in L.A, and her wayward bisexual ex-fiancé Basil Henderson, who has left thoughts of matrimony behind in favour of singledom.

What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted: A Memoir

What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted: A Memoir is E. Lynn Harris' autobiographical reflection. It concerns the rise of a small-town boy to a successful writer, detailing his battle with depression and "coming out" experience as a gay African American.

A Love of My Own

A Love of My Own is Harris' 2003 novel, which won Blackboard's 'Novel of the Year Award'. It details a year in the lives of several characters living in New York. It is narrated alternately by Zola Norwood, editor of a hip-hop magazine, and Raymond Tyler Jr., the magazine's CEO. It deals with both the trials and tribulations of the characters's love and work lives against the backdrop of the cultural and political events of 2001 and 2002.
