Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s nationwide address regarding the ongoing protests across Nigeria. In a statement released on Sunday, Soyinka voiced his disappointment and concern over the government's approach to managing the protests.   Soyinka pointed out that while the presidential address outlined the government’s remedial actions since taking office, it failed to adequately address the management of the protests. He condemned the use of live bullets and tear gas against peaceful demonstrators, calling it a "retrogression" reminiscent of colonial-era tactics.   Read Also : Favour Ofili Qualifies for Women’s 200 Metres Race Semi-Final in Paris 2024   “I set my alarm clock for this morning to ensure that I did not miss President Bola Tinubu’s impatiently awaited address to the nation on the current unrest across the nation,” Soyinka began.     His outline of government’s remedial action since inception, aimed at warding off just such an outbreak, will undoubtedly receive expert and sustained attention both for effectiveness and in content analysis.   Read Also : Gunmen Kill 8, Injure Three in Imo Community   My primary concern, quite predictably, is the continuing deterioration of the state’s seizure of protest management, an area in which the presidential address fell conspicuously short.   Soyinka criticized the security forces' use of lethal force, stating, “Such short-changing of civic deserving, regrettably, goes to arm the security forces in the exercise of impunity and condemns the nation to a seemingly unbreakable cycle of resentment and reprisals.   Live bullets as state response to civic protest – that becomes the core issue. Even tear gas remains questionable in most circumstances, certainly an abuse in situations of clearly peaceful protest. Hunger marches constitute a universal S.O.S, not peculiar to the Nigerian nation.   Read Also: Mixed Reactions Trail Tinubu’s Address To #EndBadGovernance Protesters, Nigerians   He continued, “The tragic response to the ongoing hunger marches in parts of the nation, and for which notice was served, constitutes a retrogression that takes the nation even further back than the deadly culmination of the watershed ENDSARS protests.   It evokes pre-independence – that is, colonial – acts of disdain, a passage that induced the late stage pioneer Hubert Ogunde’s folk opera BREAD AND BULLETS, earning that nationalist serial persecution and proscription by the colonial government.   Soyinka emphasized that “the nation’s security agencies cannot pretend unawareness of alternative models for emulation, civilized advances in security intervention.   He suggested, “Need we recall the nationwide 2022/23 editions of what is generally known as the YELLOW VEST movement in France? Perhaps it is time to make such scenarios compulsory viewing in policing curriculum.   In all of the coverage that I watched, I did not catch one single instance of a gun leveled at protesters, much less fired at them even during direct physical confrontations. The serving of bullets where bread is pleaded is ominous retrogression, and we know what that eventually proves – a prelude to far more desperate upheavals, not excluding revolutions.   Read Also : Mixed Reactions Trail Tinubu’s Address To #EndBadGovernance Protesters, Nigerians   Soyinka concluded by urging a shift away from the use of lethal force, stating, “The time is long overdue, surely, to abandon, permanently, the anachronistic resort to lethal means by the security agencies of governance.   No nation is so under-developed, materially impoverished, or simply internally insecure as to lack the will to set an example. All it takes is to recall its own history, then exercise the will to commence a lasting transformation, inserting a break in the chain of lethal responses against civic society.   Today’s marchers may wish to consider adopting the key songs of Hubert Ogunde’s
BREAD AND BULLETS, if only to inculcate a sense of shame in the continuing failure to transcend the lure of colonial inheritance where we all were at the receiving end. One way or the other, this vicious cycle must be broken.

In response to the National Theatre being renamed after Soyinka, Charly Boy says, " Mighty have fallen for beans."
Tumblr media
Veteran singer and social activist Charles Oputa, often known as Charly Boy, has said that he will no longer show respect for Prof. Wole Soyinka, the recipient of the Nobel Prize. Strong opponent of President Bola Tinubu Charly Boy made the claim in a post on his official X Twitter on Friday in response to the National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos being renamed in Soyinka's honour. The renaming of the facility in Soyinka's honour was announced by President Tinubu in a message he penned to honour Soyinka on his 90th birthday, according to news reports. Charly Boy reacted by criticising the action in his post, stating that the "Mighty have fallen, for beans." He wrote, “Uncle WOLE I henceforth withdraw all the respect I once had for you. “When late Jimmyjohnson talked about you in the 90s, I thought he was only yabbing you. “Wow! Sunday Igboho: Withdraw all charges against Nnamdi Kanu – Ohanaeze begs Tinubu
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, on Wednesday, appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to officially withdraw all charges against Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB. Ohanaeze made the appeal in the wake of the recent release of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho, from prison in Benin Republic. Recall that Ohanaeze had urged Tinubu to release Kanu and prevail on the Benin Republic government to release Igboho on October 1st, 2023. But, last week, the Beninese government released Igboho from prison after two years in custody. Igboho was picked up and remanded in Cotonou after he fled Nigeria after he was declared wanted by the Department of State Services, DSS. However, Ohanaeze’s factional Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, commended the unwavering contributions of Yoruba leaders such as former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof Banji Akintoye, Prof Wole Soyinka, and Pa Ayo Adebanjo in securing Igboho’s release. A statement by Isiguzoro said their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Hence Ohanaeze Ndigbo expressed its gratitude for their dedication and relentless pursuit of justice. To this end, he urged Tinubu to emulate his Beninese counterpart, President Patrice Talon, by releasing Kanu. Isiguzoro insisted that releasing Kanu would ensure national unity and peace. He said: “We express our satisfaction with President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic for releasing Sunday Igboho through the intervention of Yoruba leaders and political figures. “Now, we believe it is the opportune moment for President Tinubu to follow suit and show similar gestures by dropping all charges against Nnamdi Kanu. “The release of Nnamdi Kanu will not only contribute to restoring peace in the Southeast region but also address the prevailing security challenges faced by our nation. “Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly believes that granting Kanu his freedom will foster reconciliation and promote more harmonious coexistence among different ethnic groups in Nigeria.” Read the full article

By • Olalekan Fagbade Prove allegations of fake credentials against me, Soyinka dares accusers, gives ultimatum Nobel laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, has reacted to the recent accusation of parading fake academic records being levelled against him by some persons within the country. The literary icon, in a statement on Friday, said he gave those peddling the accusation against him 30 days to submit all their evidence to the relevant agencies for investigation. As reported by The PUNCH, Soyinka said if found culpable, he would strip himself of any titles and honours he might have garnered in his career. He also said that failure by the accusers to provide evidence within the stipulated time would mean they lack honour and should, as a token of moral recompense, “undertake to jump off the bridge of the symbolic River Niger”. It will be recalled that one Joseph Dahip had in a 1998 article referenced a 1996 report in which a scholar, Prof James Gibbs, was quoted as unravelling some claims allegedly made by Soyinka. The 1996 article partly read, “The claim by Professor Wole Soyinka that he obtained a first-class bachelors degree in English Literature from Leeds University has been challenged. Instead, what the Nobel laureate actually obtained from Leeds was a second-class degree. This startling revelation was made by Professor James Gibbs who has closely monitored the activities of former Leeds students in English literature.” The report quoted Gibbs as saying that he relied on a variety of sources, including contemporary Leeds publications, archival material, Soyinka’s work and “interviews I had with him” in arriving at the facts he had on Soyinka’s academic records. But Soyinka on Friday said he was awaiting the decision of his lawyers on whether or not to file a legal action. He stated, “A document of unmatchable scurrility, last encountered during General Sani Abacha’s global campaign of calumny against opponents of his despotic, infernally venal and homicidal reign, is back in circulation. Duly modified to suit a debased internet culture, it is making its grimy rounds ironically under the auspices of a democratic political party, supposedly dedicated to an ethos of freedom of opinion and expression. The contents of that script are attributed, as before, to the scholastic industry of a Bristol schoolteacher. “While awaiting a decision from my lawyers whether or not to dignify the current sponsors of this mouldy tract with legal action, I wish to state in advance that I voluntarily waive all protection under the statute of limitations, and insist that the laws that govern fraudulent academic claims be invoked and applied to these allegations to the uttermost limit. I also declare, in advance, that if found culpable, I shall strip myself of any titles and honours I may have garnered in my entire career, from the most obscure to the most coveted. “In return, I expect the purveyors of this sordid material to submit all evidence, however minuscule, to the nation’s investigative agencies – Directorates of Prosecutions, EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission), ICPC (Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission), plus affected institutions and others – within the next 30 days. Failing this elementary service in public interest within the stated time, and/or if such allegations are yet again proven baseless, thus indicating that their sponsors can boast of neither honours to their careers nor honour to their births and origins, then, as a token of moral recompense, they should undertake to jump off the bridge of the symbolic River Niger, provided with life jackets to ensure a life of remorse after this ritual purgation, but chained to one another in a commendable unity of purpose.” Soyinka said he had copied the statement to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Pan-African Writers Association, Accra, Nigerian Association of Authors, the Nobel Foundation, Stockholm, the University of Leeds, the alleged Bristol Primary Source and his school, and the media.

My short story expands on an original Jorge Luis Borges short story from 1938, "Shakespeare's Memory”.
“Embleton begins his riveting story, Soyinka’s Memory, based on his fictional conversation with Professor Wole Soyinka, an intriguing literary generic, by saying, “I bear the weight of Soyinka’s memory, real and imagined.” The reality in this opening sentence admits that we can be a part of a memory that is not ours.”

What Peter Obi Said About Soyinka's 'Fascist' comment
Tumblr media
The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the February 25 presidential election, Mr Peter Obi has reacted to Prof Wole Soyinka’s allegation that his supporters widely known as ‘Obidients’ are ‘fascists’. Obi said he was very sad there was such an exchange, maintaining that he respects Soyinka as a father. He gave the response on Monday while fielding questions on Arise Televison’s Prime Time programme. He said that people always mentioned as ‘Obidient’ are not entirely people who are with him, insisting that the opposition had also come into it. However, Obi maintained that young people have been deprived by supposedly a system that is meant to care for them. Recall that Soyinka had in an interview with Channels Television accused Obidients of fascism. The former Anambra State governor said his supporters have been pushed to the wall, maintaining that there is nothing the society is offering them. He said, ”Prof is a well respected, revered personality in Nigeria and globally. And I have always respected him and he is a dear father to me. For me I was very very sad that there was such an exchange. ”Some of the ‘Obidients’, I must tell you, or people they mentioned that they are ‘Obidient’ are not entirely people who are with us. “The opposition have also come into it. We don’t worry about that. But I was very sad there was such an exchange. “I respect a father, but you have to understand this, these young people are people who have been so deprived by supposedly a system that is supposed to care for them. “They have been pushed to the wall. Even me, the way they even react when I say things, I could feel their pain. I could feel it because I live in the same system that they are living in. “When we were young, things were working. All of a sudden, it became a worse situation.” “My own comment on that is that Prof remains a revered father, and I have kept respecting him for that. “And of course the young ‘Obidients’ I feel for them, I wish you can feel what they are feeling, the pain. “There is nothing the society is offering them, even when they try to do it on their own. This is a place you move around with a laptop, you will be arrested and labelled all sorts of names. “This is a place where people are thrown into jail for even making comment, when people who have stolen billions of the country’s money, done worst things are moving around and celebrated.” Read the full article
