Introducing my Tumblr

For my Tumblr page I have chosen to touch more on what I have learned from my ASU social media class. This weeks lesson had touched on topics that may be controversial to most people on social media platforms. Topics such as racism and sexism were discussed and it has demonstrated how skewed and twisted our social media posts can become. What is supposed to be a safe place intended for voicing our opinions and bringing attention to what is important to us, has turned into bullying and criticism amongst others. The time is now to cleanse our social media and learn how to feel comfortable while sharing our voice in today’s society.

Story time! We first found Bella on Craigslist from someone who could no longer take care of her. She was about 2.5 months old and they lived very close to us. We heard some of the back story - came from Sacramento-CA, Malamute breeder, lost paperwork, got as a gift from bf who was friends with cousin? Anyways, she seemed like a good puppy, very happy, and liked to follow us around, semi-potty trained, and thought that she would be a good play mate for Kofu (lol saved for story 2). Long story short, I was curious how she would turn out, as her markings as a puppy was cream/beige and she kinda looked more like a Shepherd mix, so I scoured through IG to find similar puppies to see how they turned out as adults. And lo and behold, ran into another puppy that looked justttt like her. It was uncanny (head markings with diamond)! We double checked their birthdays and it matched up along with the place of birth. After messaging this total stranger inquiring about his puppy, we decided that they must be related! Since there were parts of the story that lined up. The Power of Social Media

The power of social media has allowed us to emerge as we are and be heard.  Due to its inclusiveness, social media represents all of us.  But the power of social media is immense and can be harnessed for both good and evil. New ideas and powerful social, political and racial movements have emerged from the various platforms. Social media launched the “Arab Spring” political uprising in the Middle East.  #lovewins, #blacklivesmatter, #heforshe, #maga, #metoo, and even #freethenipple (since men can go topless, women should be able to as well, no offense anyone) represent some of the most powerful movements over recent years.  The list goes on and includes lesser known niche groups like countless intersectional groups that can organize and share their experiences and struggles.  The freedom to express and organize is so American and social media represents this town hall space of today. It is a beautiful thing.  

But there is a dark side. The Big Tech Masters of the Universe wield immense power like media never has before.  Not only do we create the content for the networks and they monetize it, and many platforms, especially the largest social media, over reach by data mining our personal information and actions, both online and offline and sell it.  They have the ability to predict our behavior. They manipulate by targeting their algorithms to deny groups a natural flow of information that otherwise may be become emerge as powerful movements.  They choose to promote agendas they favor and suppress those they despise.  They favor many groups that I find offensive, hateful and toxic.  They censor movements, groups and individuals, demonetize them, and many times ban them while allowing other controversial users and groups to thrive.  They initially promised free expression, but now have proven to be increasingly authoritarian by limiting the freedoms we have enjoyed for generations.  Many times they support and promote toxic and dangerous ideas and movements.  I predict some of the biggest social networks will continue lose the public’s trust and lose many of their audiences to more respectable and less intrusive niche oriented networks.  Let’s just hope it happens sooner than later.

The Age of Leaderless Digital Protests

Digital campaigning for activism has become an effective way to create a ‘continuous arrangement of activities to try to force some kind of political change’ (Stickels, 2020), with digital communities having the ability to gain exposure at a rapid rate and increase their following through even the simplest of digital campaigning strategies. Social Media is now at the forefront of these campaigns with some of the largest current activist movements almost solely relying on the social media attention that they gain.

Decision makers and those in control are the ones that are often targeted by activist campaigns, ‘to influence these people and institutions to veer from the status quo […] we need to understand what makes them tick’ (Whelan, 2020) and this is where newly found digital tactics have been beneficial. Social media has allowed those that many have previously struggled to have their voices heard, to now be heard loud and clear. Due to the ‘typically fickle attention span of the news cycle’ (Alvarez, 2019) there is a constant battle for attention in the media, in a 2019 publication ‘On Sustainable Tools for Precarious Times’ it was highlighted that the social media savvy youth in the United states have developed the ability to ‘keep the topic of gun control in the headlines for weeks’ (Alvarez, 2019). This is no small feat and it is a testament to the increasingly undeniable influence that social media can have.

‘The rallying power of social media [has become] a crucial enabler for leaderless movements’ (Rachman, 2019) and with the popularity and trends within different social media platforms constantly evolving, the challenge for campaigners in the digital space is to keep up with this evolution. If your campaign is not highly adaptable and malleable across all the various platforms the campaign in question may be drowned out by the high volumes of content that are constantly pushed through the same channels of exposure. The new age of digital revolt is apparent in political and social climates across the globe and they ‘are convened by smartphone and inspired by hashtags, rather than guided by party leaders and slogans drafted by central committees’ (Rachman, 2019).
