506. Super Bowl Commercials, 1997
(previously)
Who played that year? Wait, lemmie guess, the Patriots and the Denver Broncos? *googles*, no wait, it was the Packers vs the Patriots.
This its the best copy I found of the commercials that aired that evening.
We start things off by Jason Alexander apparently living in 2020 and having a cyber date with his girlfriend.
I completely forgot that Dennis Miller used to do M&M commercials. He was trying so hard to be cool back then, and Mr. Cha Cha I just can't imagine him doing commercials. Of course later on in the 90s and the early 2000s he did commercials for 10-10-220, but man everybody did those. Dennis was so cute when he was on SNL. Too bad.
Pizza Hut, that's too much pepperoni! 65 slices of pepperoni? Grease city.
I didn't make a screen cap for this one, but why was it in Party of Five commercials, Lacy Chabert was always screaming or crying or whining and moaning about something?
In my twisted, damaged mind, middle school looked exactly like those Pepsi Generation Next commercials. I imagine myself looking something like the girl with the neon star crown back then.
Man, remember when Nissan was cool? They stopped being cool when they discontinued the Xterra. That little chihuahua looks like the Taco Bell Dog's girlfriend. Keep your 'wawas bucked in you guys.
In the Luxottica eyewear commercial, but one lady says "I want you to see how silly I'd feel in rhinestones." yeah ok we get it you don't like dressing up.
Oh WOW. Our friends at Breathe Right had Super Bowl Money that year! It was about $1.2 million to air an ad back then. 1
Another oh WOW moment, Twig Boy makes an appearance in a King of the Hill themed Super Bowl Commercial. Hank is boomering it up at a grocery store, demanding this his beer is more important than Twig Boy's hum-uuus. Stupid small minded Hank.
Oh I remember there was a little bit of controversy with the Fred Astaire Dirt Devil Broom Vac commercial. All though the 90s there was a trend for re-animated dead celebrities to advertise things. Fred's wife didn't see the issue, however:
Robyn Astaire said she agreed to give the makers of Dirt Devil vacuums permission to use movie clips showing her husband performing in the movies Royal Wedding and Easter Parade.
She said it will be the first time she has let an advertiser use her late husband's image after turning down hundreds of proposals. This time, she said the proposal was "artistically suitable."
Mrs. Astaire said her husband would have seen nothing wrong with using the vacuum cleaners as dance props. "He was always receptive to new proposals. He would have used a vacuum cleaner in a minute. Why, he used a mop in the '30s," Mrs. Astaire said. 2
I feel like a Senator who was also a Presidential Candidate being in a Visa commercial totally wouldn't fly today.
lil Bridget Jones cameo.
The Cadalliac Catera commercial with Cindy Crawford that later got pulled airs. I'm still mad about that. Doug DeMuro recently did a video about the Catera! Car had no cup holders! Cindy Crawford needs a cup holder for her Pepsi!
We all love an Odd Couple parody. In this one Wayne Gretzky is kicked out of the Blues' house and moves to NYC.
Hold up. There were two commercials, from two different car manufactures about birds poopin' on cars. One for Nissan, and one for Honda. Someone got fired for that blunder, I'm sure.
Ok, what is this guy doing online outside at an airport in this USWest commercial. He has to just be writing a novel Brian Griffin style. I mean, it was still difficult to go online outside of our office or home back then, right?
I want to be a fly on the wall back in like, late 1996 when someone ordered the cakes for this Fox ratings commercial for the local station in New Mexico where these commercials came from. "you want a cake with the cops/America's Most Wanted logos on them?"
Pepsi absolutely owned this Super Bowl. Even Mr. Unsolved Mysteries got involved.
For some reason, every local commercial for the Fox channel is completely washed out. What was going on, KASA?
Oh here we go, bby, the most controversial commercial that year. Holiday Inn compared their new renovations to someone who transitioned going to a high school reunion. Kenny Bania was one of her classmates! I imagine that Bania bullied her all though high school.
From MarketSmith's:
This spot—perhaps the first to deal with transsexualism—was very popular in the ad industry and garnered positive reviews. Naturally the ad also upset a lot of people and so (predictably) Holiday Inn was forced to boot the spot shortly after its Super Bowl debut. But, shockingly, the franchisees—the mom-and-pop owners with the most to gain or lose—loved the ad. Gary Schahet, president of the International Association of Holiday Inns, said that calls ran 5-to-1 in favor of Bob Johnson. Others said 75% of the people polled thought that the ad did a good job of explaining what was happening at Holiday Inn. That sounds like a win, so why was it pulled? A bunch of old fuddy-duddy Southern Baptists complained. “It was the older people who didn’t like it,” Schahet said. “But then they aren’t our customers. We are trying to get the young business executive back into Holiday Inn.”
So, marketing mavens, here we have Holiday Inn successfully relaying its ad message to its key targeted demographic, but they still had to pull the ad after only a few airings. That’s a fail, right? Maybe. Maybe not. After the ad’s initial airing during the Super Bowl, Holiday Inn branches across the nation reported thousands of new reservations—all under the name of (you guessed it) Bob Johnson. In a statement, Holiday Inn Exec VP-Chief Marketing Officer John Sweetwood said: “We spent only $2 million on TV time and production, but we got $10 million in publicity. One might say all that publicity isn’t bad.” Change is good. 3
Ok guys, I'm telling you this for the last time. Publisher's Clearing House did NOT have Ed MacMahon. He was American Family Publishing. This time around, Tom Bergeron was the face of PCH. Fox After Breakfast was a short lived morning show Fox tried to do in the mornings. Here's a great video about it.
I feel like I remember this one time my mom and I joked that we should stay up just a little bit longer one Super Bowl night thinking they may show up. My mom fell for all those sweepstakes.
I feel like I've said "wait" about 20 times watching these commercials, today, but Wait, when did Brandon on 90210 learn how to play hockey? I remember an episode where he fell in love with a skater, and the only reason why I know that episode is because it was on a tape a friend sent me with old Simpsons episodes. So I guess he did play hockey on a regular basis?
Scottie no tippin' Pippen stealing all the fries.
The X-Files was the closing out program that year. Never forget that time I looked into bombs after the Super Bowl. The bomb years were way beyond us at this point.

LONDON, LATELY - WHERE TO EAT
Its been a while since we last chatted here and I can't believe the year is already coming to an end in a couple of weeks - me and you same. Thought I'd compile some of my recent favourite spots around the city, especially since there are so many travelling to London around this time of the year and it is always a question I get on where to go, what to see and what to eat. I'll break down this segment in two different posts to not make it so lengthy.
So here it is; London lately from the diary of a twenty seven year old girlie girl.
Where To Eat | Restaurants:
Ramo - A Japanese-Filipino ramen spot in the middle of Soho. Not one to usually go for ramen but this hits the spot with a balance of flavours, comfort and spice. Try the Pandesal Garlic Bread for starters.
Fallow - Definitely one of the best spots we went to this year. Straight forward British food menu with a modern, extremely flavourful take. I loved the corn ribs, mushroom parfait, cod's head and veggie burger.
Roe - A sister to Fallow located in Canary Wharf. Similar menu but with a different appeal and ambience - so amazing.
Broadway Market - Our top most visited market this year. We would go at least every two weeks on a Saturday because that is when the good food stalls are out. We've got our standard stalls that we love - Frenchie for Ashwyn's duck burger and fries and for me it is actually the tiny Koya hut tucked in between the market. Koya for their udon bowls and it is extremely comforting on a cold day especially. We recently discovered Benny's, a family own ice cream spot and they've got banana pudding! Inspired by Magnolia Bakery's famous Banana Pudding in NYC, this is the closest to it and trust when I say, it really hits the spot.
Netil Market - Another market we've been frequently visiting this year too as it is just a 5 mins walk from Broadway Market. Less crowded, less food options too but really good ones with what they have - pizza, bagels, noodles and a sandwich stall.
Toba - An Indonesian spot in the middle of St James, Piccadily. An elegant-modern Indonesian ambience with your favourite staples in a more elevated manner.
Alley Cats Pizza - If you are looking for a New York style pizza spot, this is it in Marylebone. Immediately transports you to a different setting with its brick walls, wood-fire pizza scent and evening light.
Bao Noodle Shop - The famous Bao chain around London but their outlet on Redchurch, Shoreditch specialises in noodles while still offering their crowd favourite baos.
Sucre - For a night to celebrate, this Argentinian restaurant has a really romantic ambience and food is nothing too complicated - we loved celebrating our Q1 accomplishments here.
Smoking Goat - For a fun & flavourful Thai cuisine, this Redchurch gem definitely is a favourite. There was something about sitting on the kitchen table as well that made the overall experience even better.
Ria's - A Chicago style Pizza spot in Notting Hill. This spot is the perfect GNO dinner location.
26 Grains - An all time favourite and I love that the menu is seasonal too so there is always something new to try.
Farmer J - A lunch favourite go-to and mostly around business areas in the city. Simple, healthy, fast.
Som Saa - Another amazing Thai spot in Liverpool Street. So flavourful, spicy and just nice to go in a big group to try different things.

Dante & Luigi's 762 S 10th St, Philadelphia, PA 19147
According to the restaurant’s website it boasts as being the oldest Italian restaurant in Philadelphia being established 1899. While this may be true; oldest does not mean being the best or even good for that manner.
Oh, I am sure in the beginning the restaurant must have been excellent, but as time went on, Dante & Luigi's became more of a tourist trap living on its past reputation.
Dante & Luigi's claim to specialize in all homemade traditional Italian dishes is highly suspect: First their dishes are mostly Italian – American not real traditional Italian dishes, Second, the menu items taste like boxed pasta and poorly made sauces. For Example:
Rigatoni Carbonara is made with just six ingredients pasta, egg yolks, black pepper, Guanciale (Italian style bacon) Pecorino Romano and pasta water.
Dante & Luigi's makes their Rigatoni Carbonara with Cream, Egg, Bacon and Cheese with Peas & fresh Tomato, which is an abomination. If you made a Carbonara with these ingredients in Rome, the birthplace of Carbonara, you would be hung until dead on one of the umbrella pine trees growing in Rome Italy. Restaurants that add cream cannot cook because it is an art to take egg yolks, Pecorino Romano cheese and pasta water and made a true Carbonara sauce - STAY AWAY!

I cannot be certain but a lot of the menu items tasted like they were steam table food (items made ahead of time placed in a warming tray and then microwaved before service.
For the prices that Dante & Luigi's charges, items should be made “a la minute" that is to say made fresh to order.
For instance, my wife ordered Spaghetti and meatballs. It was horrid, undercooked boxed spaghetti, hard as a rock meatballs with tasteless tomato sauce. No grated Parmesan or Pecorino Romano cheese offered at a cost of $22.00.
Okay, first spaghetti and meatballs in not a traditional Italian dish and can only be found in Italy in tourist traps that cater to tourists visiting historic sites like the Colosseum in Rome. Across from the Colosseum is the Gladiator restaurant, a tourist trap designed for Middle America patrons who believe that the Olive Garden is a fine dining experience.

By the way, my wife is not Italian so she gets a pass in ordering what she described as worse than "Franco-American Spaghetti Os” (canned spaghetti with meatballs)
I ordered the Ziti with Broccoli Rabe & Sweet Italian Sausage with Olive Oil & Garlic. This simple dish needs to be made to order. It was not. In my opinion, it looked and tasted like it came out of a steam table. One old looking thinly sliced sausage, less than 2 ounces of cooked boxed ziti, one strand of broccoli Rabe, with hardly any olive oil and garlic. It was a dry, bland poorly made item. No grated Parmesan or Pecorino Romano cheese offered at a cost of $22.00.
Bread was store bought imitation Italian that you would buy at your local Wal-Mart store.

The service was acceptable but less that adequate. When it came time for pay the bill, the website says 10 percent discount for cash but we did not receive any discount whatsoever when we paid with cash.
Overall, the ambiance of Dante & Luigi's did have old world charm, but the restaurant provided poor quality food, mediocre service at New York City prices and was a disappointing experience.
I know you may have read positive reviews of Dante & Luigi's but many people also believe that Pizza Hut make the best pizza and Subway makes better Italian Hoagies than Angelo's on South 9th street. If you are from Philly you know the real deal! - Pass on Dante & Luigi's
Let me just say that I am an Italian American with Calabria and Bari parents born in the heart of Italian Harlem in NYC. I am a former chef and restaurateur who has lived the restaurant life for over fifty years and I was embarrassed to bring my friends and my wife to this tourist trap in the city of brotherly love - Sometimes oldest means just that "old and past its prime" – STAY AWAY!

What in the cinnamon toast fuck are you talking about. Where did that come from, how dumb are you pretending to be?
Zoning reform isn't about destroying forests in Bumfuck, Nowhere so that the evil developer can put put up condos there, this is not a Captain Planet episode. Land near forests is generally quite cheap, you can buy a plot and build a picturesque home in NH if you want to, for example. This is about being allowed to fucking build anything in places that are already populated and expensive, like SF, NYC and Miami. It's about being allowed being allowed to put up buildings higher than three stories. It's about stopping the existing landowners from claiming some dilapidated laundromat or ruins of a Pizza Hut have "historic value" and shouldn't be torn down.

@jadagul is this Good, Actually?

The dumbest part of the 2014 movie is that it expects us to believe that the Ninja Turtles, who have have lived their whole lives in NYC, would order from Pizza Hut.

Today is Small Business Saturday, and much of what I do here is support small businesses. Most of them are of the vintage variety, but today, I wanted to give a shoutout to a new pizza shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn that has created a retro oasis that has brought me a great deal of joy. A nostalgia-loving pal and I stopped here on Friday for lunch and we’re both 1980s kids, and well, we were in our element. My friend is a Michigan native and loved the deep-dish Detroit pizza here. (You can also get Grandma pizza as well.) The old-school vibe that chef/owner Matthew Etchemendy has created is, well, totally rad. It’s no surprise that he’s also a child of the 1980s. He gets it. He told Greenpointers recently: “I love the idea of a pizza restaurant like I grew up with as an ’80s baby,” he said. “Like when Pizza Hut was a restaurant, my parents would take me, it was such a good vibe, ordering pies and pitches or soda to the table. It was so great back then.” Suburban Pizza Huts are embracing this vibe again through the Pizza Hut Classic “retro renovations” I’ve shared with you, but here is something that is channeling that in a special way in a city storefront. Check out the pics and you’ll see what I mean. I wanted to give a shoutout as well to @noblesigns, which crafted the signage and brand for Ace’s Pizza, and even brought to life an adorable mascot, Ace Man. Noble Signs is creating beautiful signage in NYC and beyond, a refreshing departure from the vinyl-awning and plastic ugliness that has swallowed most of the city over the past few decades. Wherever you shop or dine today, be it vintage or new, think small! #retrologist (at Ace’s Pizza) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWyV1QQLjYc/?utm_medium=tumblr
