Since Sephiroth is so tall, how many times in a day does he wack his head off of things? Does he get mad, or just accept the fact that nobody has even made an effort to adjust things to him?

Sephiroth is a victim of a world designed for people at least a foot shorter than him. The daily inconveniences stack up—door frames, ceiling fixtures, even the occasional low-hanging mako pipeline in older parts of Shinra HQ. He's adapted to ducking through doorways and angling himself in tight spaces, but rarely gets visibly angry about it. It's an inconvenience, yes, but what can he do?

But helicopters are the real enemy. No matter how many times he boards one, no matter how carefully he ducks, something always goes wrong. Once, he miscalculated and cracked his skull against the top of the hatch so hard the entire squad went silent in horror—except Zack, who had to be physically dragged away before he could start laughing. Sephiroth likes to imagine a world where people remember how much taller he is than them, where doorways are higher, ceilings are accommodating, and—most importantly—Zack doesn't yell "Careful, sir!" in every new room like a twisted game of Marco Polo.

*Sephiroth sways on his feet, looking pale and disoriented*

Angeal: Genesis, he's about to pass out! We need to get him to Medical!

*Angeal scoops Sephiroth up bridal-style*

Genesis: Let's go left that way, it's faster!

*Angeal suddenly turns, Sephiroth's head violently slams into the doorway*

Sephiroth: !!!

Genesis: Actually, no! They're doing renovations down that hall. We have to go right!

*Angeal whirls around—THUNK—another brutal impact*

Sephiroth: ???

Genesis: Okay, now go straight, but take the second left.

Angeal: Got it.

*Angeal adjusts his grip, marches forward with purpose—CRACK—Sephiroth's skull meets a low doorframe*

Genesis: Wait, no. This is the wrong way.

Angeal: GENESIS, PICK A DIRECTION.

*They rush into the elevator, the doors close, all is well*

“Well, maybe if you just–”

“Dad! Just–…” you swallowed the rest of the heated statement that nearly escaped your lips, mentally counting to three before glaring back at the man who was breathing down your neck, “do you remember when I was 12 and you had the clever idea of attempting to install that new sink in room 5?”

Already knowing where this story was gonna go, Harvey quietly replied, “…yeah…”

“And just who, pray tell, fixed it after you made the pipes uncontrollably spurt out water, consequently flooding the entire room?”

“…you did…”

“That’s right,” you sucked on another tense breath before continuing, “so, unless you’ve somehow improved that skill since then, which, I’m sorry dad, but I highly doubt that you have, please, just let me handle it alone.”

“…alright, fine,” he ultimately backed off, nearing the basement stairs, “but I’ll be right up by the front desk if you need me.” 

“I won’t,” you called over your shoulder as you redirected your attention to the hopeless pipes, “but thanks.”

Letting the illuminated spot from the small flashlight clutched in your palm guide your vision, you checked each and every rusty tube. 

After too many pokes and prods, you finally found the source of the problem. Stepping over towards the main pipeline you bend down and reached through tickling cobwebs to turn the paint-chipped knob clockwise, shutting all of the water off.

Before your spine managed to straighten back out, you felt your blood begin to boil as you heard the sound of heavy footsteps once again ascending the crooked staircase.

“Dad, please, for the love of god, just–,” you spun around, though the unexpected figure that stepped into the low light caused your fury to fade away in an instant, “oh, uh, you’re not–, uhm, h-hi.”

“Hey,” Pete’s deep voice echoed throughout the dim space, sounding the way that hot chocolate felt. 

“Uh, not that I’m not thrilled to see you here, in my basement of all places, but, um, what are you–, what can I help you with?” 

“Nothing ma'am,” he took a step closer, “it’s what I can help you with.”

“Excuse me?”

“Well, Harvey sent me down here to take a look at something.”

“Oh, did he now…” that was the last you needed in order to lose your patience.  

“Yeah,” Pete’s eyes tracked your form as you riffled through the open metal toolbox and yanked out a wrench. 

“Well,” you huffed as you began to loosen the various hexagon-shaped fittings snug on the pipes spiderwebbing out from the bulky water heater apparatus, the labour of the task presenting itself in your vexed voice, “you can tell my dad that I’m still just fine and don’t need any help!” the tool on your palm then inadvertently slammed against one of the pipes, the clanging and therapeutic blow snapping you enough out of your ire to take a step back. Squeezing your eyes shut a moment, you let out a deep sigh before parting your lips once more to speak, “I’m sorry, it was very kind of you to offer your help, but I’m okay.” 

Fully expecting him to just take off, his stationary stance caught you off guard, “so, the water heater’s acting up?”

“It’s fucking ancient, that’s what it is,” you replied as you returned to twist the remainder of the fittings, “should have updated it long ago, but no, no, that never happened,” you continued to grumble mostly to yourself at this point, “of course it’s much more fun to let me handle it down the line when the hot water outlet is completely rusted over and clogged up to the point of no return, you know, that’s just so much more fun…” your words then faded away as you attempted to turn a knob that in no way wanted to corporate.

Quietly cursing underneath your breath, you tried to put all your weight into it as you strained to turn the stuck fitting. 

But just then, from out of nowhere, you felt the wrench begin to turn, but that victory wasn’t the only thing you suddenly felt. Engulfing your own, the comparatively massive hand of Pete enveloped yours as if it wasn’t even there to begin with, helping you turn it as though the metal was made out of butter. 

Blinking up at him after it finally twisted completely, his intimidating stature seemed even more towering up close. 

“Uh,” you slipped your hand out from under his calloused palm, “thank you…”

“No, problem,” you promptly whirled around to avoid his piercing gaze, busying yourself by riffling through the toolbox without any purpose whatsoever, “so your old man’s not helping you out in renovating this place?”

“Well, he’s brilliant at a lot of things, but those skills in particular have never really been in his bailiwick–, wait…” you kept your back turned to him as you asked, “how do you know that I’m renovating?” 

“People in this town like to talk, a lot,” he breathed out the essence of a laugh, “and that includes your father.”

“Ah, okay…”

Spinning around once again, you kept your eyes steadfast on the dusty pipes, though after what only felt like a second, Pete unexpectedly proposed, “hey, what do you say I lend you a hand?”

“What?” 

“Well,” hands clasped together in front of him, the digits on one of them dug into the palm of the other as he spoke, “I’m no stranger to fixing things, so it might help make it fly by a bit faster than if you try and get through it all on your own.”

Unable to detect if this was just some strange joke or not, you verified, “I’m sorry, but are you legitimately offering me your help in renovating this place right now?”

“Yes.” 

“Seriously?” you bellowed a little louder than you’d intended, earning just a small nod from him in confirmation, “I–…” you blinked back at him, downright dumbfounded, “that’s incredibly generous of you, but I can’t really afford to hire you right now…”

“Oh, I’m not asking you to hire me, just let me help out a bit.”

“Pete, I can’t let you do that, not without any form of compensation.”

“Well, then just pay me in free coffee till it’s done,” he attempted to joke, though it didn’t manage to crack a smile on your lips. 

“This is not funny, Pete.”

“No, it’s not,” he continued, still in a startlingly light-hearted tone, “you clearly don’t know yet just much coffee I tend to drink on average every day,” seeing you not budge an inch, he then dropped the attempt with a gentle nod, “fine, how about we just take a look at a price at a later date? Decide on it later when it’s all done, and you start making a profit again?”

WIP Wednesday

Sooooooooooo. . . . . . . . .

This story has been a love project for a while. While writing it I have learned a lot about how I want to write and what I want to write about. Which is why I think this is taking me so freaking long to write😆 So here is a part from my ColdFlash story after Barry's told how Leonard Snart dies.

He remembered, the breath stolen from his lungs and the walls had suddenly felt too close, suffocating him.

There was never an explanation or dramatic farewells for the head Rogues sudden disappearance. It was as if Snart and Rory had vanished into thin air, which left Barry bereft and with so many unanswered questions.

Why did they go? Why did he go?

Although, he knew that Snart didn't owe him any kind of justification for his actions. The worst of it all? Barry hadn't noticed their departure. The Rogues themselves still had given him trouble from time to time and Snart was known for keeping a low profile after a big haul. Even after he thought of this, it didn't mitigate the guilt that grew inside him.

Barry had quickly gone to Gideon. He needed to make sure it was real, that it was true. That he was really gone. Had he really lost someone else?

The AI's somber voice cut through his panic, but the truth hit him again, just as painful. Sna- Leonard's reasons for leaving would forever remain unanswered. Barry wondered if ever Leonard realized that he wasn't as evil as he portrayed himself, that there was good buried beneath the thief facade.

Even if he did, Barry couldn't see Leonard admitting it to himself.

To this day, his memory was fractured after that call. He couldn't remember how he'd made it down into the cold depths of the pipeline with knees to his chest as he leaned against the wall, time stood still, the world around him faded into the background.

It was there that Caitlin found him. Her voice that echoed in the massive tunnel brought him back to reality, however slowly. More footsteps sounded through the curved metal walls.

It wasn't just Caitlin. Cisco, Harry, Wally, Eddie, and Iris had been following right behind her. The sight of his friends brought a new wave of fresh tears that slid down his face like rain even as Barry remained eerily silent. They all sat around him, like a cocoon of familiar warmth that gave him some strength to tell them what happened. After staring at the wall for what felt like eternity, Barry found the strength to speak, his voice hardly above a whisper. He told them what Felicity had said, how Leonard had died a hero, sacrificed himself to save Mick, saved the whole universal timeline from the Time Masters.

Barry was right. Leonard's true nature, one that Barry saw just a sliver of, would never be seen again. He knew his family and friends might struggle to understand the depth of his sorrow, most of which he didn't quite understand himself. But they hadn’t judged or ridiculed him. They just sat with him, a shining beacon of compassion and understanding. In that moment, Barry realized that he may never truly know why Leonard's death affected him so much. The heavy emotional turmoil might be a lingering presence that could haunt him forever.

Once Barry's tears settled, Wally suggested they move to the media room they had finally finished renovating a while ago. Used for movie nights, or when shifts took too damn long, and no one had the energy to make it home. Safely.

Adorned with plush, velvety curtain in deep shades of midnight blue that hugged the windows and blocked out the world. Soft, ambient lighting bathed the room in a gentle glow, with one wall painted white for the projected shows and movies.

As they settled into the room, the giant, dark red wrap-around couch, chosen by Cisco for its quote 'supreme comfort', enveloped them in its plushness. Fluffy pillows and blankets crowded every cushion with extra comfort, and some days, emotional support.

Wally, in his genuine desire to understand Barry's pain, began asking questions. His gentle voice filled the room with curiosity and concern. Barry took a moment, his fingertips brushing against the plush fabric of the cushions, before finally voicing what had been weighing on his mind for far too long.

"I’ve heard a lot of stories about Captain Cold. From you guys and from what I’ve seen on the news. He seemed like our usual run of the mill villain. What made him so special?" Wally looked at the surprised expressions around him. "What? What did I say?"

Barry fixed his stare on the far wall. "The world isn't all black and white. It's a bunch of shades of grey. Some darker or brighter than others. The darker greys are the people who have a better understanding of the world than most others I've seen. They acknowledge the world can be a horrible place but can also recognize its capacity for understanding. Unfortunately, those darker greys also know that the world won't show much compassion for them. Once you stray from the 'right' path one too many times, others don't see much chance at redemption. Regardless of how hard they try to show they've changed; it doesn't matter, so what's the point of changing?" Barry sighed.

Wally looked confused for a moment. "I can see what you mean, but that doesn't mean you give up hope. You keep fighting. Show the people that doubted you that they were wrong."

"To you and me, there is always hope. We know truly evil people have no love in their hearts. They exploit anyone they need too in order to achieve their ends. With no care in the world." Barry's gently smiled. "On the other hand, what they don’t see is someone who genuinely cares for others can't be evil. To me at least. Misled, yeah. Broken, maybe. They are the ones who can be shown they can be more, they aren't alone, and someone believes in them. But that means that you have to look past the walls and armour they put up. Then still believe in them, even at their worst." Barry knew the question was coming as Wally paused to think about what his words.

"Is that what you did with him?" Wally asked softly and Barry almost chuckled. It wasn't something he hid well when it came to Leonard Snart.

"I guess I did. I saw so much more to him than what he showed the world. No one understood that. They just saw the darkness in him, and I won't argue that some of it was justified. But he loved his sister with every fiber of his being. He cared so much for his best friend that he couldn't watch him die. That's not an evil person. No one showed him that he had the potential to be more than what his circumstances made him, so he resorted to the only way he knew how to survive in a world that would have rather seen him dead." He went quiet. There was a quote that his mom used to tell him when he was little that never made sense to him until he became the superhero in the stories she used to read to him.

"A hero isn't about having powers or skills. A hero is someone who can walk through the darkness and still have light in their heart." Watery, green eyes gazed at the ceiling. He didn't have to die to prove it.Exhausted physically and emotionally, Barry gave a slight smile and turned in for the night. Wrapped in the familiar, soft textures, a flicker of warmth spread within him, a comforting balm for his bruised and wounded heart.

I also have to give a huge thank you to @thatsnotmygunflash every time I've sent them this story to look over (even though it's been a while lol) and has given me idea's on how to keep going with this. Quick Hits #3 - Wendell & Wild, Triangle, Summertime Rendering

Wendell & Wild

Boy, what a weird movie. Look, it’s gorgeous, the animation was incredible, great character designs, the soundtrack fucking rules.

But there’s just so much going on here that it feels overstuffed. It’s like Wendell & Wild has 3 or 4 different A plots that they tried to shove into one movie, and the result is that none of the individual arcs feel fully cooked to me. There’s movies that handle this well, with certain elements left more subsidiary and subtle worldbuilding filling in the blanks, but that wasn’t that – there’s just straight up not enough screentime for all these different plots to land.

this was too funny. also I really love the flat, stylized faces W&W have in the underworld

Wendell & Wild themselves are charming, but their world is left fairly unclear – is that all of hell, or is it really just a roadside attraction they want to give a fresh coat of paint? Also, why are the humans so excited that the pair gets to renovate their torture chamber at the end? Are we just that supportive of our friend’s goals? Manberg and Helley were fully baffling, and we never seemed to get much of an explanation for how the two met, the origin of Helley’s powers, or why all the faculty seem to see her shadow walking around the school & not care one bit. While the prison folks are sufficiently evil, and we certainly see them killing off competitors or obstacles to their plans, it’s weird that we never see any of their prisons. It's such a missed opportunity for a show don’t tell moment – instead, Siobhan literally explains it to the viewer with a diagram. Similarly, Kat’s struggles in the foster system seem weirdly passed over. The villain’s schemes and the (intended) themes of the movie are meant to be about a corrupt criminal justice system and the school-to-prison pipeline, but all we really get to see is a 10-second flashback giving us the roughest outline of what happened to her. Hell, more time is spent on the city council vote getting rigged than is spent on the actual justice system.

honestly one of the hardest character feats I've ever seen

I dunno, I’m excited to rewatch this one day and maybe gel with it more… on first blush it just came across overwhelming and slapdash structurally.

Triangle

Man, worst first date ever.

This one really came around for me; I was pretty burnt out with the loops on the boat, but as soon as Jess makes it back to the mainland, holy shit… what a flawless final act. The way the conclusion immediately ties together all of the unanswered questions that have been stewing in your mind since the beginning, the immediate perspective shift we get on Jess as a character, the simple confidence of straight up repeating all the shots from the first act, and their totally different meaning now that we know the context… good shit.

It makes Jess a much more interesting, layered character: one that doesn’t fall neatly under categories of good or bad, just a flawed, stressed-out mother who made one mistake too many, unable to accept that it’ll be her final legacy and pass on. We see her good sides, her determination, her regret for her mistakes, but we also see the darker side in her temper and quickness to violence. Truly, as the movie alludes to many times, a modern Greek tragedy with a deeply flawed hero.

Summer Time Rendering

I noped outta this one pretty quick. Things were already looking dicey when we got both a classic anime Oops Accidentally Bumped My Whole Face Into Your Boobs and a gratuitous panty shot by minute 3, and then it turns out this is a time loop story, and those are our time loop building block events, meaning every loop will start with the boob thing. Then, in loop #3, MC prevents his friend from crashing her bike – the event that leads to the panty shot – and we get the exact same panty shot anyway from her diving into the water?? nah fuck off

Anyway, normally I don’t record any thoughts for things I drop, but I kinda just wanted an excuse to post this exchange lol

Doing well so far, definitely not up to any rebellions in far flung areas of Space to overthrow an Evil Empire and reinstate its proper ruler through a Violent coup in the making. Nope, not doing that.

But what i do has changed little, from caring for my dragon watching it grow, wrangling joking Undead in the Lair or dumping Salt on Unsuspecting Shrimp.

The Gilded Age's Broadway Divas: Peggy Scott (Denée Benton)

The stylish and erudite Peggy Scott is the bridge between the whites of New York and the oft-overlooked Black elite. Her story is often separate from the vapid society scandals our other ladies are deeply entrenched in. While they sip tea and bicker about opera boxes, Peggy hides from a lynch mob in a barn and kisses a real-life historical figure with a wife and child at home. Great.

Denée Benton made her Broadway debut in my personal favorite show, Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, one of Tumblr's personal favorites as well, apparently. In it, she played the young ingenue, Natasha Rostova, marking a significant victory for young Black women who never get to play romantic leads, especially in traditionally white stories. She then went on to join the Natasha-Eliza pipeline and took on the role of Eliza Schuyler in Hamilton, a character originated by Philippa Soo, who had previously played Natasha in the first few off-Broadway productions of Comet. Full circle. Adding to the pipeline, Shoba Narayan who was an ensemble member and Natasha understudy also went on to star as Eliza in one of the touring companies of Hamilton.

Before and after shooting season two of The Gilded Age, Denée returned to the stage to star as Cinderella in the Encores! Into the Woods production last spring. More on that later.

#1: "No One Else," Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 (2016)

Now, when I call classical sopranos a dying breed, I am not saying they no longer exist. Denée Benton is one of the few young sopranos in the theatre, and we all dearly hope she continues to grace our stages rather than transfer to the lucrative world of film and television as so many do. Denée's singing voice in this is just exquisite. I saw it four times on Broadway, and I'd have seen it god only knows how many more if it hadn't closed.

Great Comet was a critical success in its off-Broadway life. Based on a 72-page slice of War and Peace, it follows Natasha Rostova as she navigates young love and all the scandal that entails. It is a beautiful production no matter where you see it. Whether it was in the tent in the Meatpacking District, or the gorgeously renovated Imperial Theatre. Unfortunately, it was an expensive endeavor that did not pan out financially for producers. Broadway was just a little too big. But it has since had a robust regional and international life, spawning productions in Brazil, Japan, and across the U.S.

On-screen mother Audra McDonald (Dorothy Scott) sang this song in April of 2015, several months before Denée would take over the role of Natasha. Like mother, like daughter. Audra's rendition has since been taken off youtube, and I am bereft. But I can link you to an audio HERE.

#2: "On the Steps of the Palace," Encores! Into the Woods (2022)

Concluding their 2022 season, NYCC launched a wildly successful production of Into the Woods, one of Sondheim's most beloved works. Here, Denée plays Cinderella and we all know and love that story. Broadway itself has had at least four Cinderella stories, and I'd argue this one is the best adaptation. But the competition is...not fierce. (With condolences to Bad Cinderella's Grace McLean, fellow Comet cast member.)

The Encores! production then transferred to Broadway in July of 2022, but by then Denée was filming Gilded Age and did not transfer with it. So of course, who came in to replace her? Philippa Soo. And, when the show's original cast move on and the new cast came in, Denée Benton was back in the saddle as Cinderella again. Isn't theatre a wonderful thing?
