Quite recently, while researching Spanish fauna, I found out that the endemic hare from Northern Spain “liebre de piornal” or “liebre de Castroviejo” is called “broom hare” in English, and since I’m just in such a Harry Potter mood lately, I couldn’t help but to think this was definitely the most famous pet among Spanish wizards, because there’s just no way little kids wouldn’t want to have their own broom hare lol. Stage win for Evenepoel

On the medium mountain stage 18 to the Alto del Piornal, the overall leader of the 2022 Vuelta a España, Remco Evenepoel, smashed the opposition to take the honours of the day and add a few more seconds to his lead. Enric Mas was second and Robert Gesink had the win ripped from his hands in the final kilometre.

t’s a frigid winter morning in the remote mountain village of Piornal, Spain, and there is mischief afoot. The main road is eerily empty of cars. And everywhere—piled in the front of shops, rolling down gutters, floating in fountains—are turnips. The air is earthy, peppery.

Then the screaming begins. A mob shoves its way down a chute-like street into the main plaza. Close behind is the monster, clad in a suit of colorful rags, almost cute—except for the grin full of fangs and giant devil horns curving skyward. It swaggers forward, banging a drum. More people, by the thousands, pursue, chucking turnips at the monster for all they’re worth.
