"'I'm not Jerry Lee Lewis,' says Jerry Lewis" by Jim Hoffman (Photoplay, October 1958)
I've been meaning to post this article for some time. Fans of Jerry Lewis can relate to mentioning him and being met with, "You mean that guy who married his 13-year-old cousin?" NO! I've had to make this distinction with so many different people. I find it fascinating that this correction was being made as early as 1958 as it was causing issues for Jerry and his fans even then.

Society note: Mr. Buster Keaton gave a small afternoon tea at the Hotel Ambassador in Los Angeles recently in honor of Miss Brown Eyes, the cow who has a leading part in his new picture, "Go West." Delightful refreshments consisting of hay, dog biscuits and crackers were served. Among those present were Peter the Great and Cameo, two dog stars: Jimmy, a monkey actor, and Polly.

In 1954 from Photoplay Magazine. They were described like this. Good, humble and modest guys who respected their audience because they never refused an interview. After the breakup, Dean never gave any more interviews in person except for the one he gave to Oriana Fallaci at the end of 1967. The more his success on his own increased, the more he isolated himself and distanced himself from the public. Singing without finishing his songs to an audience that had PAID to hear him sing is having no respect for the audience even if they now went to his shows more to hear him say the usual jokes about drinking than to actually listen to him sing. The public wanted to see Dean Martin as a television star, not the actual singer. As the years went by, especially in the early 1970s, he began to insult the audience from the stage. The interviews were answered, on his behalf, by either Mack Gray or Dean's manager. In those few television interviews that are on YouTube he practically never speaks seriously. Always with the character of the drunk. He hid behind that character. Always, especially with his audience. Dino Crocetti's change after the breakup is incredible! He has become, physically and in his ways, practically another person!
