Mega-Dyne Advanced Research and Development's Prototype Super Quantum Connected Phone is in Alpha Testing... oh my!
Gerry Taylor, an engineer at Mega-Dyne Advanced Research and Development, always brought his work home with him, and his live-in girlfriend knew to leave it alone because he was one of the people who did Alpha testing. Sometimes, there was no telling what shocks, burns, or whatever the things he tested might still have in them. Unstable much? Very!”
“But damn!” thought Mary Becky O'Casey on seeing the latest thing he had brought in to work on.
A smartphone like nothing she had ever seen before. One that was supposed to be connected to a prototype quantum computer that no one at Mega-Dyne was sure what all it would eventually be capable of.
Whatever the case, the damn thing did floating hologram charts!
And there it sat on a coffee table in their living room as Gerry had to dash out and handle some complex, no doubt all-night problem involving another thing back at Mega-Dyne HQ. And there it sat glowing.
“What could it hurt?” Thought Becky, "But do what with it?"
Scrolling through the screen, most of which was beyond her, but one item made her pause.
“Maximum Complete 100% Translation,” it read, but activating it didn’t pop up a keyboard. Instead, it seemed to activate a camera screen, but even then, it still would do nothing.
Then Becky remembered that a new restaurant had just opened nearby called Fresh Pinoy Cuisine, which served dishes from the Philippines.
Becky had seen one of their menus and could not make head nor tails out of all the exotic-sounding names on it. Inasal na manok? Pinoy Bihon? Pancit Tortang talong? What could they all mean?” she wondered. “I’ll go there for dinner and try the translation thing.” She decided.
As soon as she was seated in a quiet little corner, she pulled out Mega-Dyne’s no doubt still buggy, experimental Super Quantum computer-linked phone, keyed up the Maximum Complete 100% Translation, pointed it at the menu, the screen then said, "COPY COMPLETE. RECORD MORE?" Shrugging, Becky let the camera take in the Philippines-themed restaurant until it gave a ping and read, “READY TO ACTIVATE POINT CAMERA AT SELF.”
“Wha..? thought Becky but went along.
The phone produced a dazzling bright light straight into her eyes as a deep shock went through her.
When she recovered, Becky expected to find the translation of the menu on the phone screen; instead, she saw that it had turned itself off.
Then she glanced down at the menu and knew that Inasal na manok, Bihon Pancit, and Tortang talong meant Domesticated chicken stew, Filipino Rice Noodles Chicken and Veggies, and Eggplant cakes.
“How do I know this now?” wondered Becky aloud to herself, but it came out as "Paano ko malalaman yun?"
“I can read and speak Filipino!” thought Becky. Then, another thought came to her. After all, she had felt the vibe that came from the flash run through her whole body. Taking a compact out of her purse, she looked, and yes, indeed, the face that looked back at her was not the one she had come into the restaurant with.
“Babaeng Pilipina ako” (I’m a Filipina girl!”) thought Becky, the words in her head already starting to change from English to Tagalog.
Then Becky saw the waitress coming and calmed herself.
“Ready for some food from back home?” she asked in English, “Yes, I am,” said Becky, also in English, but now with a very noticeable Filipino accent.
“Recent arrival?” asked the waitress, who, compared to Becky, had no accent at all or at least sounded as Virginia regional as Becky had before the quantum flash. Would you like me to switch to Filipino?” asked the waitress. “Yes, it’s like I just got here today, but I need practice, so English, please,” said Becky.
And then, with her heart beating like mad, she ordered her first Pinoy meal. By the end of it, she had calmed down and was ready to leave.
That was when a thought came to Becky, who by that time had decided that she would after tonight start calling, and more importantly, thinking of herself not as Mary Becky O'Casey, but as Maria Blessica Ocampo “Oh Grabe!” (Oh wow!”) thought Blessica “My boyfriend is now one of those guys with a Filipina girlfriend! I used to make fun of people like me. Napaka ironic!”

My favorite menu items that I tried from Jollibee:
Before I tried Jollibee in my country last year, I did some research about the restaurant on Wikipedia by finding out what foods they have on the menu compared to the Philippines.
Without further ado, let's get started!
Jolly Sweet Spaghetti: This is one of my go-to menu items whenever I get stressed out. When I ordered the Jolly Sweet Spaghetti from their menu, I wanted to know what it tasted like compared to Filipino traditional spaghetti.
When my food arrived, I wanted to know what this dish tasted like compared to the Filipino version of Jolly Spaghetti. This meal was topped with sweet banana ketchup, savory tomato sauce, red beef hotdogs, and cheddar cheese. As for the spaghetti, it was perfectly al-dente, and the pasta did not get soggy when it came with the set.
Overall, the Malaysian version of the sweet-style spaghetti is better than the other restaurant's version of spaghetti in the Philippines which the sauce has a not-so-sweet taste and the sausages are not as flavorful as the beef and pork-flavored sausages.
Peach Mango Pie:
One of my favorite snacks from Jollibee is this sweet hot filling of Filipino mangoes with peach slices in this deep-fried pastry which makes it a tasty treat right after a meal.
I used to dislike mangoes back in my middle school years. However, when I started to buy the dried version of mangoes, it tasted sweet and not too sour for my liking.
As I got older, I started to like mangoes and they had a gummy-like texture with sugar that had a sweet crunch.
The blended mango filling in the pie was sweet and not too sour. As for the bits of peach, it was delicious when mixed together and put in a pie. I love this hot dessert and when I go to Bukit Bintang, I would eat it again when the final exams are over.
Fiesta Floats:
Did you know that they had a different type of Fiesta Floats topped with a perfect swirl of Vanilla ice cream that encouraged buyers to try a summer treat in the Philippines back in the 2010s?
Unfortunately, you can only find these three types of floats here in Malaysia. While in the Philippines, it's popular among Filipinos who want to get a refreshing drink during the summer break.
Two months ago, after New Year's Day, I wanted to order one of the Fiesta Floats at the kiosk in Sunway Pyramid as a refreshing drink for myself due to us getting lost in the mall. But I saw that the drinks were sold out due to a shortage of ingredients.
A week later, after the tour of the B-Verse Beyond the Stars Exhibition, I went to another restaurant in Pavilion Bukit Jaili where I saw that all of the Floats were available on their menu.
I was delighted that they still serve the drink to everyone who wants to buy it. I ordered a Chocolate Float for me to try it out. However, it does not look the same as the one in the picture, but the staff members did their best to make a perfect swirl of vanilla ice cream.
The chocolate drink wasn't sweet, and I could only taste the chocolate inside the milk that had an okay taste as I drank a sip. As for the vanilla ice cream swirl, it wasn't that bad for my liking as seen in the commercial on Facebook. Next time if the drink is not sweet, I will tell the manager to add more chocolate milk for the drink.
Overall, I could suggest to the locals who want to try out these foods from this Filipino fast-food restaurant in Malaysia. As for the Philippines, it is not recommended to Muslims as some of the products are not permissible for them to eat.
If I have time, I could bring one of my friends to try this restaurant out for a treat after class to explore what fast food spaghetti tastes like compared to other kinds of pasta in restaurants.

“Let the City of Lakes be your happy place”
San Pablo City is where I grew up; nonetheless, before we decided to live here, my home town was Tagaytay City. At the age of 13, we chose to live in San Pablo City. What I find most amazing about this City are the seven lakes. San Pablo City is known for its amazing seven lakes that have different stories. These lakes are Sampalok, Pandin, Yambo, Mohikap, Bunot, Palakpakin, and Calibato. This lake is also known for having tilapia fish, and some people also fish in it.
Many tourists visit the seven lakes of San Pablo City. These lakes have a lot to offer: there are restaurants that offer dining that is floating on the lake, different activities you can do, such as touring around Sampalok Lake using a bicycle, trying street foods that the Philippines is known for, buying souvenirs, and many more.
San Pablo City is not just known for its beautiful lakes; it is also known for delicious buko pie. Aside from that, this City is known for having cold and hot springs. It is also rich in culture, historical sites, old churches, etc. Furthermore, what makes San Pablo City famous aside from having beautiful places to visit is that Laguna is the birthplace of Dr. Jose Rizal one of the national hero of the Philippines. There is a lot to know and explore in this city. People will not run out of places to visit and experience.

Hello you mrs. honey nut cheerio lefty eyebag 🎅
Yeah it was me who sent that greeting 😁 I didn't want to bother you with a long message, so I kept it short and simple hahaha
How are you? How was Christmas morning? Did you get some good presents?
I want that heat.. yeah, today it is at 9 degrees, will snow sometime later and there's wind chill of -2. So I am bundled up while working.
So I made the tiramisu..with a little twist. Have you ever had biscoff cookies? Instead of the lady fingers, I used that. Let me tell you.. it was amazing. Then I almost made this thing called a mango float.. it's a dessert from the Philippines and it's like a frozen cake. It was so good too.
The ham, it was a small 2 lb honey ham.. it came out perfect. I was very happy and content with the food yesterday. I ate an extra slice of the ham just for you. I thought to myself, "poor lefty eyebag, she is going to have turkey, while I am enjoying this nice honey ham...oh well" 🤣🤣
Hm so when I listened to that song, it made me think about something like a chaotic couple. Someone is obsessed with the other person but the other person is just stringing them along because they like the attention. The person that's obsessed is okay with it though and doesn't want to let it go.
I know what you mean about tumblr being a safe space hahaha when I was younger, I had a different tumblr account, and it was filled with angst and it was my diary. Of course now I don't know what the username and stuff is for it, and I think I deleted that tumblr.
Aw its good that Emily is having her fun since she is with her cousins! Poor adults though who can't sleep in hahaha but at least the best thing is to see the kids happy and enjoying themselves! Did she like all her presents from grandma?
What foods did you get from the Indonesian place? Was it all good like you expected it to be?
I hope you enjoy your Christmas celebrations 😁 don't party it up too much though, you aren't as young as you were... just kidding
-CuriousGeorge
Hii hii curious corn-punn righty eyebag!
How r u? How is everything after christmas? Tell me what did i miss..😁
I'm back! Haha. Sorry for the late answer.. the last days of the trip were busier because we tried to do more stuff n hang out more. I went to my friend's christmas party though. Had some great indonesian food, my friend made huckleberry champagne mule too n it was so good! I had a few of that n some shots. 😅
Christmas morning was fun,Em got a lot of presents n she didnt even know where to start n she was kinda done opening gifts.after opened some.lol. one of my brother in law got covid so he n his family couldnt come to have turkey dinner with us.
We made turkey dinner with corn bread casserole, sweet potato casserole with marshmellow, gravy, mashed potato, sweet rolls, stuffing and candied carrot.
Wow the tiramissu u made sounds really good! I wish i could try some. I found a new place that sells tiramisu n it has espresso with grand marnier liquor in it. Oh my god! It's so good! I love it. It's one of the best i hv had.
Did u do the mango desert too? Aww did u really think of me when u ate that ham?😆 honey baked ham is so good, i love it.haha.
N yes thats a really good theory u got from that Glass Animals song. I love it, the relationship sounds toxic. 😅 but i bet it will be fun to write.
Yes, Em likes all the presents she got. She is so spoiled haha.
Well the indonesian restaurant i went was the one i used to go so i already know how good their food r. I bought 3 different dishes. 1 panfried thin rice noodle thats kinda the same with philipines pancit noodle i think.. 1 chickem poridge with curry sauce n spicy, with chunks of fried bread n green onions n i also got something thats called ketoprak. It's hard to explain but u can google it. It's a dish with thin rice noodle, with steamed rice cake, tofu, sprout n with garlic peanut sauce n some friedncrackers.
The desert i got is a thick pancake cut in half n folded with some toppings in the middle of it. I got the chocolate peanut one.
Now, the curious Q & A session is back.. so give me next question, curious george.😅😆🤭
Cheerio!

The island is rich in diverse natural attractions that don’t fail to appeal to all travelers in having an unforgettable journey.

Bohol has become popular as the island boasts several biodiversity and natural attractions. It makes up one of the country's top five Central Visayas tourist destinations. By visiting here, you can check out many spots to choose from freely based on personal preference and goal. Here is a list of tourist destinations in Bohol you should visit.
The Chocolate Hills
This attraction would surely come to everyone’s mind when looking for the best Bohol tourist spot. The Chocolate Hills is, without a doubt, the most famous tourist destination in Bohol. It is also one of the most renowned landmarks in the Philippines. It was even declared as the country’s 3rd National Geological Monument by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
These hills are considered a natural wonder, consisting of over 1,200 mounds, varying between 20 to 50 meters in height. Here, tourists can explore the area by hiking along the trails and have access to good photographic shots of the hills. According to local legends, these hills were shaped due to a conflict between two giants.
These hills hold both historical and cultural depths for locals. The best time to visit the Chocolate Hills is during the dry season, when the hills will offer its iconic brown hue.
Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary
The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary is a renowned tourist attraction and natural sanctuary that mainly focuses on the conservation of Philippine tarsiers. It is one of many must-visit wildlife sanctuaries in the Philippines that aims to raise awareness of endangered species and promote sustainable tourism practices.
The Philippine tarsiers are under constant threat of poaching and habitat destruction, which puts them on the endangered species list. The sanctuary offers guests interactive tours that exhibit these miniature primates and their importance in the local ecosystem. Guests will find the adorable scene of these nocturnal animals perched on branches and sleeping all day.
Loboc River
The Loboc River is one of Bohol’s most popular destinations and contributes greatly to local life. It is recognized for its photo-worthy scenery and serene ambiance. In addition, it has also served as an entranceway where agricultural goods were brought for trading.
The Loboc River flows through the heart of Bohol, allowing travelers to experience the island’s natural beauty through its popular river cruises. A local band accompanying tourists on these cruises add a musical ambiance throughout the tour. Visitors can also sail through the river on floating restaurants and enjoy fine dining throughout their trip.
Tigbao Hanging Bridge
While there are many hanging bridges in the Philippines, this is the only one entirely made out of bamboo. This attraction's materials and natural settings have made it a contender for the best Bohol tourist spot based on uniqueness alone. Crossing this bridge comes with an entrance fee, but tourists can get free access if they take the available Bohol tourist package.
Tigbao Hanging Bridge is located in Sevilla, Bohol, and is suspended 82 feet above the previously mentioned Loboc River. Crossing this bridge is safe as it is heart-pumping. The Bamboo Bridge comes with a set of cables that ensures its stability. Tourists can even shop at the souvenir shop at the end of the crossing to commemorate the crossing.
Hinagdanan Cave
The Hinagdanan Cave is one of the many amazing caves in the Philippines you should visit. These caves offer tourists a sense of awe, mystery, and wonder. The cave got its name from the Cebuano word “hinagdanan,” meaning laddered, thanks to its unique story of how the cave was discovered.
The Hinagdanan is considered one of the country’s most beautiful caves. The title is considered well-earned thanks to its limestone, stalactites, and stalagmite formations. The cave is also recognized for its internal pool filled by a natural spring. With its light filters throughout its entrance, the cave is filled with an otherworldly glow.
Visitors can escape from the tropical heat, swim in the pool, or simply admire the cave’s beauty. After having fun and a moment within the cave, guests can freely check out the nearby souvenir shop and buy gifts to share with their friends.
Bilar Man-Made Forest
The Bilar Man-Made Forest reflects the testament of local determination to reforest. It is the result of the local government’s journey to restore the natural environment 50 years ago. The forest stretches over two kilometers along the border of Bilar towns and Loboc.
The man-made forest is filled with towering mahogany trees, giving travelers a breathtaking experience within the forest's heart. The mahogany trees in the Bilar Man-Made Forest consist of white and red variants that provide a unique environment setup. It also contributes itself as a vital habitat for a wide variety of local birds and small mammal species.
Additionally, the forest absorbs carbon dioxide and provides shade to cool off from the hot sun. With its many benefits, the forests demonstrate an example of what communities can achieve and endure in addressing environmental challenges.

Discovering Paradise: My Unforgettable Trip to Bohol
Nestled in the heart of the Philippines, Bohol is an island that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich culture, and thrilling adventures. My recent trip to this tropical paradise was nothing short of spectacular, filled with breathtaking landscapes, unique wildlife, and warm, welcoming locals. Here’s a glimpse into my unforgettable journey through Bohol.
Day 1: Arrival and First Impressions
Landing at Tagbilaran Airport, I was immediately struck by the island’s serene beauty. The lush greenery, the clear blue skies, and the gentle sea breeze set the tone for what would be a magical experience. After a short drive, I arrived at my accommodation – a charming beachfront resort that offered stunning views of the ocean and easy access to the island's many attractions.
: Adventure on the Loboc River
They say, No trip to Bohol is complete without a cruise along the Loboc River. I embarked on a floating restaurant and enjoyed a sumptuous buffet of local delicacies as we drifted along the calm, emerald-green waters. The river cruise was accompanied by traditional music and dance performances by local artists, adding a cultural touch to the scenic journey.
Halfway through the cruise, we stopped at a small platform where local children performed the tinikling, a traditional Filipino dance involving bamboo poles. It was a joyful and vibrant display of the island’s cultural heritage.
:Man-Made Forest
Walking through the Man-Made Forest is a journey into a realm of peace and natural beauty. The tall mahogany trees, with their straight, sturdy trunks and interwoven branches, provide a cool, shaded retreat from the tropical heat. The forest floor is carpeted with fallen leaves, and the air is filled with the earthy scent of fresh foliage. As you wander through this green sanctuary, the rustling of leaves and occasional bird calls create a symphony of nature, making it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This man-made marvel not only showcases the success of reforestation efforts but also serves as a living reminder of the impact that dedicated environmental stewardship can have on restoring and preserving natural landscapes.
: Encounter with Tarsiers
Bohol is home to the Philippine tarsier, one of the world’s smallest primates. Visiting the Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella was a highlight of my trip. The sanctuary provides a safe haven for these tiny, wide-eyed creatures, and I had the rare opportunity to see them in their natural habitat. The tarsiers were incredibly cute and fascinating to observe, clinging to tree branches and looking around with their enormous eyes.
: Exploring the Chocolate Hills
One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the iconic Chocolate Hills. This geological formation consists of over a thousand conical hills that turn chocolate-brown during the dry season, creating a surreal landscape. The view from the observation deck was simply mesmerizing. As I stood there, gazing at the seemingly endless mounds, I couldn’t help but marvel at nature’s artistry.
Day 2: Beach Bliss on Panglao Island
Panglao Island, connected to Bohol by a bridge, is known for its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. I spent a day lounging on Alona Beach, soaking up the sun and swimming in the turquoise sea. The beach was lively, with plenty of beachfront bars and restaurants offering delicious food and refreshing drinks.
In the afternoon, I went on a snorkeling trip to Balicasag Island, renowned for its vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. Swimming among colorful fish and intricate coral formations was a magical experience, highlighting the underwater beauty of Bohol.
Day 3: Historical and Cultural Tour
Bohol is rich in history and culture, and I dedicated a day to exploring its historical sites. I visited the Baclayon Church, one of the oldest stone churches in the Philippines, with its beautiful architecture and fascinating museum. The church’s history dates back to the early Spanish colonial period, offering a glimpse into the island’s past.
: Farewell to Bohol
As my trip came to an end, I reflected on the incredible experiences and the warmth of the Boholanos. Bohol is a destination that offers something for everyone – from natural wonders and wildlife encounters to cultural experiences and beach relaxation. My journey through this enchanting island was filled with unforgettable moments, leaving me with a deep appreciation for its beauty and charm.
Bohol is a true paradise, and my trip there was an adventure of a lifetime. If you’re looking for a destination that combines natural splendor, rich culture, and thrilling activities, Bohol should be at the top of your list. I can’t wait to return and explore even more of what this amazing island has to offer.

BB.Q Chicken Opens Its Seventh and Biggest Branch at Ayala Malls Feliz
BB.Q Chicken, the ultimate destination for Korean-style fried chicken, has just opened its seventh and largest branch in the country at Ayala Malls Feliz. The Hungry Kat was invited to the exclusive Grand Opening last April 9, 2024 which was attended by owners Luis "Chavit" Singson and his family plus a selection of media guests and personalities that made the event truly special.
You can find BB.Q Chicken's newest outlet at the fifth floor of Ayala Malls Feliz located along Marcos Highway corner Amang Rodriguez Avenue in Pasig City. BB.Q Chicken is a global franchise known for its mouth-watering Korean-style fried chicken, made with 100% extra virgin olive oil. It is also well known for its appearance on hit K-Dramas such as "Goblin" and "Crash Landing On You," so K-Drama fans can feel like they are part of their favorite shows.
Filipino businessman and politician Luis "Chavit" Singson led the ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremonies for the country's biggest branch of BB.Q Chicken. He is the owner and Chairman of the LCS Group which brought the franchise to the Philippines. They opened their first branch in Bonifacio Global City in November 2022 and are expecting to open 10 more branches this year.
BB.Q Chicken has expanded to 57 countries worldwide, operating a total of over 4,000 franchisees. The Ayala Malls Feliz branch comes with elegant and spacious interiors which is something you don't see at other Korean fried chicken outlets. It looks more like a hotel restaurant rather than a place you can visit at the mall.
BB.Q Chicken actually stands for "best of the best quality chicken." BBQ Chicken believes that quality ingredients are the key to making their dishes stand out, using 100% extra virgin olive oil, the highest quality oil among olive oils, as a raw material for frying their chicken. This oil is often referred to as a "gift from God," giving the dishes their signature delicious and healthy taste.
We attended the grand opening with a couple of our friends to experience the best of the best quality Korean fried chicken. The girls are really growing up so fast.
BB.Q Chicken offers a wide range of dishes and beverages on the menu. They have juices, fruit shakes, sodas, beers, wines, and smoothies like the Ice Cream Float with Yakult (P169) with its big mug of Yakult shake topped with a scoop of ice cream. Everyone loved this and I actually ordered a second glass for myself.
They also have signature BB.Q cocktails like the Seouljito (P250) which has a combination of peach soju, lime juice, mint leaves, ginger ale, and ronin peach. You can also try the K-Iced Tea (P250) which has soju, Monin lychee, Monic kiwi, green tea, and lemon juice.
BB.Q Chicken offers more than just fried chicken with its savory appetizers, sides, signature sauces, and diverse flavors to satisfy any craving. We started with the Fried Sampler (P565) which comes with a trio of layered onion rings, French fries and cheese sticks.
The Chicken Caesar Salad (P325) is a healthier alternative with its generous salad and crunchy vegetables topped with moist golden fried chicken strips and crispy bread.
For a real taste of Korea, go order the Mixed Gimbap (P990) as it comes with combination of different flavors of gimbap including bulgogi, spam, spicy fishcake and tuna mayo. This can be shared by the entire table with plenty to spare.
There's also the Kimchi Fried Rice with Egg (P345). This premium kimchi fried rice can go along with any of their fried chicken dishes.
BB.Q Chicken's menu is truly diverse, especially with the Rose Seafood Pasta (P445). This dish is a mix of Eastern and Western flavors with seafood and spaghetti mixed in a delicious blend of spicy sauce and tomato cream sauce.
Then there's the Cheese Dakgalbi (P755), a Korean-style braised boneless chicken cooked with vegetables including potatoes, carrots, leeks, and onions topped with lots of cheese.
Now let's get to the main event, the Korean fried chicken! BB.Q Chicken offers several flavors and variants for their chicken like the Sweet Soy Chicken (P580-half / P1050-whole) where sweet and savory soy sauce meets its crispy chicken. This was probably my favorite flavor that afternoon.
The other variants come with a little more spice like the Gangnam-Style Chicken (P595-half / P1070-whole). This crisp and golden olive chicken is stir-fried in high heat with chopped leeks and garlic. It's spicy, sweet, and sour all at the same time.
Those who really want it spicy should go for the Red Spicy Chicken (P580-half / P1050-whole) with its spicy chili seasoning, Vietnamese chili powder, and exotic spices.
One of the most popular dishes at BB.Q Chicken is the UFO Chicken (P1575). This big platter comes with a combination of two of their best selling chicken flavors, the Secret Chicken and Cheesling Chicken. The Secret Chicken is a golden fried chicken covered in bb.q secret sweet sauce made with about 20 ingredients including Korean chili paste, onion and garlic. This is the signature Korean fried chicken taste that is known all over the world.
On the other hand, the Cheesling Chicken has fried chicken bathed and toasted with a generous amount of cheese powder. You can also order these two flavors individually.
The UFO Chicken is served with a bed of cheese fondue heated on a portable stove so that makes it doubly cheesy. The cloudy mist that envelopes the platter gives it a majestic entrance that befits this grand dish.
We would like to thank the LCS Group and BB.Q Chicken for inviting us to join the grand opening of their newest branch. I'm planning a trip to South Korea soon so this is a great introduction to the food and culture of Korea.

Must-Try Food in Ugbo Food Hub
If you are a nocturnal person like me who enjoys night walks with friends while eating and snacks on the side, this article was written just for you! Join me and let's dive into this well-known food place in Tondo, Manila dubbed as the Streetfood Capital of the Philippines- Ugbo!
The long and narrow stretch in Velasquez, Tondo, Manila, now fondly called Ugbo Street Food, has grown famous for its numerous kiosks that serve inexpensive snacks and desserts until the wee hours of the night.
In Hiligaynon, "Ugbo" means pastime and serves as a street name in a part of Tondo, Manila. It transformed into a famous street food market. Ugbo is a neighborhood bustling with stalls and restaurants open from 5pm until past midnight. It became popular due to its wide variety of food. I wonder how locals manage to sleep amid the constant activity; it's a lively street, filled with lights and bustling conversations. Nonetheless, Ugbo stands as a source of pride for Tondo, providing income for locals. Visitors, including foreigners and food enthusiasts, flock to this area. It's truly a blessing to appreciate.
If you’re looking for an affordable place to enjoy delicious snacks and hang out with friends, check out this thriving community in Manila.
From Korean to Japanese to Filipino food, Ugbo Street has a great variety of food choices whose process mostly starts at less than 100 pesos: corn dog and rice cake such as spicy tteokbokki; crispy tempura and kani salad; sizzling sisig, bulalo, fresh lumpia, homemade lumpia, and fried rice; grilled squids and scallops; and skewered pork, beef, and tuna belly.
Other stalls offer ice cream rolls, fresh fruit drinks and shakes, fluffy pancakes and crepes, pizza, and pasta, as well as the famous "magic ice cream"-pop rice balls floating on smoky liquid nitrogen.
FOOD FINDS AT UGBO TONDO, MANILA
SIZZLING SISIG RICE
The sizzling sisig rice is an experience that engages all the senses in a harmonious celebration. Visually, it's a spectacle—a hot plate sizzling with anticipation, emitting aromatic steam that curls upwards, inviting you closer. The scent, a tantalizing blend of savory meats, zesty calamansi, and aromatic garlic, tickles the nostrils, promising a flavor fiesta. As the dish arrives, the crackling sound ignites excitement, while the sight of golden-brown sisig atop a bed of fluffy rice is a feast for the eyes. The first taste is a revelation—the crispy yet tender sisig, with its umami-rich flavor, dances on the palate, complemented by the fragrant rice that soaks up the savory juices. Each bite is a symphony of textures and tastes, delivering a crescendo of flavors that leaves a lasting impression, an invitation to savor the essence of Filipino cuisine in every sensation.
SPICY FISH CAKE
I saw this street food in every Kdramas and I’m very excited to try it. First bite and I fell in love! This is the kind of street food that I would buy after my study classes. Imagine picking up one of these fish cakes, and feeling the crunch as your fingers sink into its golden crust—the sight alone is mouthwatering. The aroma, a tantalizing mix of the sea and aromatic spices teases your senses, drawing you closer. As you take that first bite, the crispy outer layer gives way to a tender, flavorful interior. The taste is a symphony—subtle fish flavors enhanced by a medley of herbs and spices, creating a comforting yet exciting experience. But the most commendable is the sauce!
The fish cake sauce, oh, it's like a secret companion to the star of the show! Visually, it's a rich, velvety liquid, often with specks of vibrant herbs or chili flakes, inviting you to dive in. As the aroma wafts up, there's a tangy and slightly sweet scent that tickles your nose, hinting at the tantalizing flavors to come. Upon dipping a piece of fish cake, the sauce clings, promising a burst of flavor. The taste is a rollercoaster—a perfect balance of tanginess, a hint of sweetness, and perhaps a touch of spiciness, complementing the fish cakes beautifully.
For its price of 35 pesos each, I would say that this is very affordable.
CORN DOG
The best corn dog I've ever tried! This is my favorite corn dog, As a cheese lover, this snack was really for me. It has a legit stretch of mozzarella cheese that I've been craving, and I also love the combination of sweetness and sourness that ketchup and mayonnaise brings. For 70 pesos I think it’s reasonable enough. One stick can make your tummy full, especially if you’re a light eater.
TAKOYAKI
Picture the lively street scene, the sizzle and savory aroma that surrounds a takoyaki stand—the anticipation builds. These little balls of delight, when held, are warm and slightly crispy to the touch. Their appearance, golden-brown and topped with savory sauce and bonito flakes, invites a smile before even taking a bite. As you bring one close, the savory scent of the octopus, mingled with the umami-rich sauce and the tangy notes of pickled ginger, entices your senses. Upon tasting, the initial crunch reveals a molten interior—soft, creamy, and bursting with the flavors of the sea. The harmony of textures and tastes, from the crispy exterior to the tender octopus inside, combined with the medley of savory, sweet, and tangy flavors, is akin to experiencing a joyous celebration in a single bite, leaving a lingering warmth that feels like a happy hug from an old friend.
SWEET CORN
Imagine cradling a cup of freshly boiled sweet corn, the warmth seeping through the container, comforting your hands. Its appearance, a medley of bright yellow kernels, is sprinkled with a touch of salt and a hint of melted butter—a visual promise of simplicity and satisfaction. As you lift it closer, the steam carries the familiar sweet aroma of corn, triggering memories of summer picnics and outdoor gatherings. With the first spoonful, the tender kernels burst with sweetness, each bite delivering a juicy and comforting sensation. The texture is soft, almost creamy, and the combination of sweetness with a subtle salty note dances on your palate, creating a harmonious balance that feels like a warm embrace on a chilly day
ALING CONSUELO'S FAMOUS HALO HALO
If this is your first time visiting the Philippines you should try this famous dessert called Halo-halo!
Halo-halo means mixing a variety of ingredients into one bowl or cup. This dessert is exactly just that. At the bottom of a large cup, you can see sweetened beans, langka (jackfruit), sweetened banana slices and nata de coco put together. Then crushed ice with evaporated milk and on top, you can see an ube ice cream, homemade ube, and a leche flan (also a famous dessert in the Philippines). This cup of Halo-halo is worth 70 pesos.
In Ugbo there’s a family rivalry between the two halo-halo stalls that have the same brand name, Aling Consuelo Original Halo-halo. I asked one of the staff how it started and she said that the two owners are siblings. Before they were partners and ran the Aling Consuelo Halo-halo and soon became very famous in Ugbo, but one day they decided to separate and build their own Halo-halo store. I don’t know if this is their strategy to gain more attention from the customers, but I would say that it’s effective because I got curious as well.
Overall I will give this stall 2 stars. I’ve been a huge fan of Halo-halo ever since I was a kid but this one was very bland. The ingredients are neither tasty nor sweet. The servings are very little to think that this is their Special Halo-halo. I expected to have a cup full of ingredients and have that sweet and milky taste but what I’ve got is very bland and almost tasteless. The price of 70 pesos is way too expensive and not worth the price.
FINAL THOUGHTS... I stepped into Ugbo, Tondo, Manila, greeted by the bustling streets filled with vibrant colors and lively chatter. The air was thick with the aroma of sizzling street food and the faint sounds of music playing from nearby stores. As I navigated through the narrow alleys, I was warmly welcomed by the locals, their smiles reflecting genuine hospitality. I found myself drawn to the bustling market, where vendors proudly displayed their fresh produce and wares. Engaging in conversations with the vendors, I learned about their stories, their struggles, and their resilient spirit, which resonated throughout the community. Sampling some local delicacies, I experienced a burst of flavors—a delightful fusion of sweet, savory, and spicy tastes that mirrored the diversity of the neighborhood. The genuine warmth and sense of community in Ugbo, Tondo, left an indelible mark on me, showcasing the strength and vibrancy of Filipino culture amidst life's challenges.
