Phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery | Bharti Eye Foundation: A State-of-the-Art Procedure

At Bharti Eye Foundation, we specialize in performing this advanced procedure, utilizing the latest technology and the expertise of our skilled surgeons.
What is Phacoemulsification?
Phacoemulsification is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat cataracts. During the surgery, a small incision is made in the eye, and a tiny probe is inserted. This probe emits ultrasound waves to break up the cloudy lens into small fragments, which are then gently suctioned out. Subsequently, an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted to restore vision.

Cataract Surgery In Pitampura, Delhi
Micro Phaco with Micro Incision Foldable Lens (MICS)
Tumblr media
Cataract is the clouding of the lens of your eye that impairs vision. Cataract is responsible for more than half of blindness in the world, which is a grim fact because it is a treatable condition. In cataract there is a buildup of protein in the lens that makes it cloudy. This prevents light from passing clearly through the lens, thereby causing loss of vision.
Advancing age is a primary reason for cataract. With age, protein of the lens turns opaque. Other causes of cataract are metabolic disorders such as diabetes, excessive exposure to sunlight, lifestyle disorders like heavy alcohol consumption and smoking. Injury to the eye can also lead to clouding of the lens of the eye.
Treatment of Cataract When cataract forms, surgery is the only way to treat it. In cataract surgery, the surgeon removes the clouded lens and puts an Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) in your eye. Your vision will be as good as pre-cataract days, though you may need to wear glasses. Over the years, cataract surgery has moved from vision restorative to refractive surgery, so that you have reduced need of glasses.

At Bajaj Eye Care Centre we use STELLARIS TM Micro Surgical System which is the world’s most advanced technology of Cataract Surgery by Bausch and Lomb approved by FDA.
Through microphaco technology a very small incision of around 1.8mm is required to remove cataract from the eye. Through this ultra small incision, a very high frequency MICS Phaco tip is introduced inside the eye, breaking the hardest of cataracts into very small fragments which are sucked out through the same tip. Irrigation is provided through a separate side port. This arrangement provides the advantage of speedy recovery, faster healing and lesser surgery induced astigmatism. The surgery involves insertion of foldable Intra-Ocular lens which can be inserted through the 1.8mm incision.

Keeping an Eye on Safety: Navigating Phaco Surgery Challenges(Phaco Training In India)
Phaco surgery, short for phacoemulsification, is a common procedure to treat cataracts. While it’s generally safe and effective, like any surgery, it can have complications. Let’s explore some frequent issues and how eye surgeons work to prevent them.
Phaco Training | Phaco Training In India |Remove Eye Glasses
Posterior Capsule Rupture: This happens when the back part of the lens capsule tears during surgery. To avoid this, surgeons use gentle techniques and stay alert for any signs of capsule weakness.
Corneal Edema: Sometimes the cornea swells after surgery, causing blurry vision. Surgeons can reduce this risk by minimizing ultrasound energy and protecting the cornea during the procedure.
Endophthalmitis: This rare but serious eye infection can occur after surgery. Proper sterilization techniques and antibiotic use help prevent it.
Lasik Laser eye specialist in Kanpur | Best Lasik Eye Surgery in Kanpur
Dropped Nucleus: Occasionally, pieces of the lens can fall into the back of the eye. Careful handling and special tools help surgeons avoid this complication.
Retained Lens Fragments: Small bits of lens material might be left behind, causing inflammation. Thorough irrigation and careful checks help ensure all fragments are removed.
Intraocular Lens Dislocation: The artificial lens implant may move out of place. Proper sizing and secure placement of the lens help prevent this issue.
Cystoid Macular Edema: Fluid buildup in the retina can affect vision. Anti-inflammatory medications and careful surgical technique can reduce this risk.
To prevent these complications, eye surgeons undergo extensive training and use advanced technology. They also stay updated on the latest surgical techniques and safety measures.
At Mahendra Eye Institute and Khairabad Eye Hospital, we understand the importance of top-notch training for eye surgeons. That’s why we also offer LASIK training programs. Our courses cover not just LASIK, but also provide insights into other eye surgeries, including phacoemulsification.

If you’re considering cataract surgery, here’s why phacoemulsification cataract surgery might be the right option for you.
What is Phacoemulsification?
Tumblr media
Phacoemulsification, often referred to as "phaco," is a sophisticated cataract surgery technique that uses ultrasonic waves to break up the cloudy lens inside the eye.The procedure involves inserting a tiny probe into the eye through a small incision. The probe emits ultrasound vibrations  and phacoemulsification cataract surgery that emulsify the cataract, turning it into a fine, liquid form. This liquid is then gently suctioned out of the eye. After the cataract is removed, an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted to restore clear vision.
Advantages of Phacoemulsification
Minimally Invasive
Phacoemulsification is known for its minimally invasive nature. The procedure requires only a small incision, typically less than 3 millimeters, which is self-healing and usually does not require stitches. This small incision results in less disruption to the eye, reducing the risk of infection and leading to a more comfortable recovery process.
High Precision and Customization
Phacoemulsification allows for high precision in removing the cataract while preserving the surrounding eye structures. The technique’s accuracy also extends to the placement of the IOL, which can be customized to meet individual visual needs. Different types of Cataract eye surgery you need to know
Tumblr media
Cataracts are a prevalent eye condition that mainly affects older adults, causing the lens in the eye to become cloudy and thereby impairing vision. For many, the definitive cataract treatment is surgery, which can significantly restore visual clarity. Rani Menon Maxivision provides the most effective and advanced surgical options for cataracts. Understanding the various types of cataract surgeries available can help patients make informed decisions regarding their eye health.
This blog explores the different cataract surgery options, detailing their procedures, benefits, and what patients can expect during recovery.
Phacoemulsification
Phacoemulsification, often referred to as phaco, is the most commonly performed cataract surgery globally. This method uses ultrasonic waves to break up the cloudy lens within the eye. A small incision is made in the eye, and an ultrasound probe is introduced to fragment the lens, which is then suctioned out. An artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is subsequently implanted. Phacoemulsification is favored for its precision, minimal invasiveness, and quick recovery time, making it the preferred choice at Rani Menon’s Eye Clinic.
Benefits:
Minimal pain and discomfort
Quick recovery period
Reduced risk of complications compared to traditional methods
Post-Operative Care: Patients may be prescribed eye drops and advised to avoid strenuous activities for a few days. Regular follow-up visits are crucial to monitor the healing process.
Extracapsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE)
Extracapsular Cataract Extraction is another surgical option, particularly useful for advanced cataracts. In this procedure, the eye surgeon makes a larger incision to remove the cloudy lens in one piece, especially when the cataract is too dense for phacoemulsification.
Benefits:
Effective in removing very dense cataracts
Facilitates the implantation of a large IOL for improved focusing
Recovery: The recovery period for ECCE may be longer than for phacoemulsification, and patients might experience more discomfort post-surgery.
Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (LACS)
Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery utilizes the precision of lasers alongside traditional surgical techniques. A femtosecond laser performs certain steps of the cataract surgery, such as creating incisions, breaking up the cataract, and softening the cataract lens. This approach allows for a more precise and customizable treatment process.
Benefits:
Enhanced precision in surgical procedures
Decreased risk of complications
Tailored treatment plans for individual patients
Post-Operative Care: Patients undergoing LACS often report a quicker recovery and reduced discomfort, with less dependence on glasses post-surgery.
Refractive Cataract Surgery
Refractive cataract surgery involves the use of advanced IOLs that correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, in addition to removing the cataract. This surgery is particularly beneficial for patients aiming to reduce their reliance on glasses following the procedure.
Benefits:
Customizable vision correction
Reduced or eliminated need for glasses
Enhanced quality of life
Recovery: Patients often notice immediate or quick improvement in vision, with minimal discomfort during recovery.
Multifocal and Accommodating IOLs
Advancements in technology have led to the development of multifocal and accommodating IOLs, which are now popular in cataract surgeries. These IOLs are designed to improve vision at multiple distances, potentially eliminating the need for glasses for activities such as reading or driving.
Benefits:
Enhanced quality of vision at multiple distances
Reduced dependency on glasses
Post-Operative Experience: Patients may experience a brief adjustment period, but the long-term benefits generally outweigh this temporary discomfort.
Choosing the Right Surgery for You
At Rani Menon Maxivision, we recognize that each patient’s needs are unique. The selection of the appropriate surgery depends on various factors, including the type and stage of the cataract, the health of the eye, and the patient’s lifestyle and visual requirements. At our clinic, our expert eye care doctor are committed in providing personalized care, ensuring that each patient receives the most suitable treatment for their condition.
Consultation and Assessment:
The initial step in any cataract treatment at our clinic is a comprehensive eye examination to assess the extent of the cataract and determine the most appropriate surgical option. This assessment includes evaluating the patient’s overall eye health, refractive error, and personal visual needs.
Pre-Surgery Preparation:
Patients will receive detailed instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including adjustments to medications, fasting requirements, and the need for a companion post-surgery.
Post-Surgery Follow-Up:
Post-operative care is essential for a successful recovery. We schedule regular follow-up visits to monitor the healing process and address any concerns that may arise. Our team provides ongoing support and guidance throughout the recovery period.
Conclusion
Cataract surgery has seen significant advancements over the years, with multiple options available to cater to different patient needs. At Rani Menon Maxivision, we are dedicated to offering state-of-the-art treatments and personalised care to achieve the best possible outcomes for our patients. If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of cataracts, we invite you to consult with us to explore the best treatment options available.

Today was a total shit show. I wasn't expecting it to be that bad. I got to work and everything was going great for 30 minutes. Then the power went out suddenly and the back-up generator didn't turn on right away like it's supposed to so all of our equipment shut down. When the generator turned on, most of the hospital was still dark because it only sends electricity to important areas including our department. I'm glad I didn't have to work in the dark but I was pissed because cases hadn't even started yet and they put them on hold. The schedule was very busy today. I had 27 cases. They don't start surgeries when we are running on generator power. I understand why but it's still annoying. I sat and waited for a while but I decided to try to go get breakfast since I knew I wasn't going to have time to eat otherwise. The cafeteria was dark but the lady that serves the food was still working anyway. I had to use a flashlight while I was eating.
It took almost an hour to get power back. Apparently the outage was caused by some faulty underground wires. I was hoping they weren't going to fix it because I wanted to go home. I know we never shut down for anything though. They never send us home unless we are sick. When we got like 22 inches of snow about 4 or 5 years ago, they tried to force everyone to come in. It wasn't safe for patients or employees so I don't know why they were staying open to do elective surgeries. I tried to call in because I couldn't get there and my dad couldn't get out either but they threatened to send someone to pick me up. I was not comfortable being in the car with a stranger so I had to make other arrangements but I wasn't really comfortable with that either. I had to get a ride from my ex's dad and he was a creep and I didn't like being around him by myself. I guess I made it there at least. Most of the people in my department didn't show up so I was really mad about that. I shouldn't have to take risks like that for work. I would understand if we were a trauma hospital, but we're not. We don't do a lot of emergency surgeries for anything other than eyes. Occasionally we will have an add-on for a fracture or an appendectomy or something like that but that only happens a couple times a month.
Anyway, I was super irritated by the time I had to start working. I wasn't feeling very motivated. The doctor working in the morning had 14 regular phacos/cataract surgeries and a corneal transplant. He usually is done with surgeries by 12:30 but he wasn't finished until 1:45. I only took a 15 minutes lunch because I had too much shit to do. The doctor working in the afternoon did 12 cases in 2 hours. I felt like I was going to throw up and I was drenched in sweat. It was also really hot in our department because the thermostat got messed up when the power went out. Both of the sterrad machines and all 8 autoclaves were running so that didn't help. The washers were all running constantly all day too. It was so humid in decontam. I forgot to drink water because I was moving so fast. I am dehydrated now. I had a pile of stuff to do at the end of the day and I worked as fast as I could to get most of it done in 20 minutes. I could not handle staying late and I wanted to avoid going in early tomorrow. I didn't get everything done but the important stuff is out of the way. I didn't even look at the schedule tomorrow but I'm sure it's going to be bad. Every Thursday sucks now. I'm not looking forward to that but I probably should stop thinking about it.
I was so mad when I left because I didn't have the energy to go do the things I had planned on doing all day. I really wanted to go to the store because there are things I need. It was also too hot and my car felt like an oven. I have been wanting to wear shorts but I feel like a sasquatch. I hate being this hairy because it's uncomfortable for me but I will try to deal with that this weekend. I know it is going to take a while and I'm dreading that. I stopped and got food because I knew I wouldn't want to get up again after I sat down. I also had to take a quick shower when I got home because I was way too sweaty. I feel a little better now since I ate and took a shower. My body still hurts really bad. I am probably going to relax for a little while and get ready for bed. I think I'm going to try to go to sleep earlier again. I don't really have much else to say and my brain feels fried so I can't think anymore. Hopefully I can make tomorrow a good day.
I hope everyone else has a good day tomorrow too. 💖💖💖
Maxwell, thank you for giving me some reassurance. That makes me feel a lot better. You make me happy. :) I love you. 💖💖💖

Improved Quality of Life: Being able to read, drive, and watch TV without trouble is only one way that having clear eyesight again can improve someone's quality of life.
Decreased Risk of Falls: Enhanced eyesight, especially in older persons, can lower the risk of falls and other accidents.
Treatment of Other Eye problems: By enabling more thorough inspection and management of these problems, cataract surgery can also aid in the treatment of other eye conditions like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.
Types of Cataract Surgery:
1. Phacoemulsification:
The most popular kind of cataract surgery is called phacoemulsification, or phaco. A tiny incision is made in the cornea during this surgery, and a probe is then inserted into the eye. The hazy lens is broken up into tiny fragments by the ultrasonic waves the probe creates, and the pieces are then suctioned out of the eye. The same incision is then used to insert and unfold a foldable intraocular lens (IOL).
2. Extracapsular Cataract Surgery:
Extracapsular cataract surgery involves making a wider incision in the cornea in order to remove the clouded lens entirely as opposed to fragmenting it. When phacoemulsification is not an option or for more severe cataracts, this method is usually employed. 3. Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery:
This cutting-edge method makes use of a femtosecond laser to carry out certain cataract surgical procedures, like making corneal incisions and softening the lens to facilitate removal. Faster healing periods and more accurate surgical results may arise from this.
4. Intracapsular Cataract Surgery:
Intracapsular cataract surgery is a less common technique in which the lens and its surrounding capsule are removed in its entirety. The considerable danger of complications makes this method unusual in modern times.
5. Manual Small-Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS):
This method makes use of a smaller incision and is comparable to extracapsular cataract surgery. It is frequently utilized in developing nations where availability to cutting-edge surgical instruments may be restricted.
6. Robotic Cataract Surgery:
This more recent method helps the surgeon do cataract surgery by using a robotic system. The procedure's accuracy and precision can be enhanced with the robot's assistance.
Procedure of Cataract Surgery:
Usually carried out as an outpatient treatment, cataract surgery entails the following steps:
1. Anesthetic: Either local anesthetic or ocular drops are used to numb the eye. 2. Incision: To reach the lens, a tiny incision is made in the cornea. 3. Lens Removal: Using ultrasonic energy, the clouded lens is broken apart and extracted from the eye. 4. Lens Replacement: To replace the natural lens in the eye, an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted. 5. Closing the Incision: Usually, stitches are not required to close the incision. 6. Recuperation: Within a few days, patients can return home and resume their regular routines.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, cataract surgery is a safe and efficient treatment that can enhance a person's vision and overall quality of life. It's crucial to speak with an ophthalmologist to figure out the best course of action depending on unique requirements and preferences.
