God almighty – it feels wrenchingly sad and shocking to bid adieu to adored kitsch icon and pop culture fixture Pee-wee Herman, the madcap man-child character created by comedic visionary Paul Reubens (27 August 1952 – 30 July 2023). Last night Pal and I watched Reuben’s final artistic statement Pee-wee’s Big Holiday (2016) for the first time (I didn’t have Netflix when it first dropped) – what a joyous way to celebrate his artistry. (Full disclosure: I cried). Reubens made the world a more gleeful place.

Pee-Wee's Big Holiday (2016)
My rating: 4/10
Almost worth watching for the "epic bromance" (as The Youth might call it) between Pee-Wee Herman and Joe Manganiello. Almost.

“I adored her. I loved her whiskey voice; she had this voice that just reeked of soul and sweetness. She was like the Billie Holiday of the dispossessed.” Stacy Keach “She had talent, yes but God she was exhausting.” John Waters "The last thing my mother said to me was, 'SuSu, your life is a celebration of everything that is cheap and tawdry.' I've always liked that, and I've always tried to live up to it." Susan Tyrrell
Died on this day: the truly wild maverick “outsider actress” Susan Tyrrell (née Susan Jillian Creamer, 18 March 1945 – 16 June 2012). “Actor often cast in sleazy, raunchy roles” was The Guardian’s headline for Tyrrell’s obituary. Seriously - what greater career summation could an actress possibly hope for? She brought nuance, humanity and perversity to her portrayals of grotesques, harridans, shrews and alcoholics. For better or for worse, off-screen the hard-drinking Tyrrell wasn’t dissimilar from the characters she played. And as Michael Musto concluded in his Village Voice tribute, “Hollywood never really embraced her – she was too strong, fiery, talented, unsculptable. Too unique.” Films I’ve loved her in: Fat City (1972), Andy Warhol’s BAD (1976), I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (1977), Forbidden Zone (1980), Angel (1984) and its 1985 sequel Avenging Angel, Big Top Pee-Wee (1988), Cry-baby (1990) and Powder (1995). But if you’ve never seen a Tyrrell film, I’d recommend starting with ultra-freaky 1981 horror movie Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker (aka Night Warning) as a starting point. She’s ferocious in that one!

"Although I'd like to join the crowd In their enthusiastic cloud, Try as I may, it doesn't last..."
x~x~x~x
Happy Halloween, all! In the past, I've drawn several pieces featuring my MC's as characters from some of my favorite animated movies, and in honor of that tradition, I decided this year I'd try my hand at Carewyn and Jacob's mum, Lane Cromwell, casting her as Sally from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas!
My history with The Nightmare Before Christmas is a very long one. You young whippersnappers who weren't around when this movie came out might not know this, but when the film was first released, it was NOT the big marketing cash cow that it is now. On the contrary, it was a cult classic at best. Disney had so little faith in the project while it was in production that it was even put out under the Touchstone Pictures banner, rather than with its official company branding. The film's original theatrical trailer, as well, was not a great representation of the film we got, to the extent that when my mum saw it -- especially the scene of the kid pulling the head out of the box at the end -- she was so horrified that she declared there was no way her two-year-old daughter would ever watch something like that. Fortunately my father (who was both a bit younger and more avant-garde and nerdy in his media tastes) already knew Tim Burton for his previous works like Batman and Pee Wee's Big Adventure, and he persuaded Mum to give the movie a chance. Mum was still incredibly skeptical, but we still went to go see it as soon as it came out. And shockingly, not only did I fall in love with The Nightmare Before Christmas at once at the ripe old age of two, but both my dad AND my mum loved it too! And from that year on, it was a holiday staple in our family, one we watched and sang along to every single year without fail. It was The Nightmare Before Christmas that made Mum fall in love with the music of Danny Elfman, and even if she honestly isn't a big Tim Burton fan, she has enjoyed every soundtrack Elfman's ever written for Burton's films. So it was really wholesome for me to draw Lane -- a character partially inspired by my mother -- as our favorite ragdoll, Sally. Like Sally, Lane may be quiet and not as charismatic or dynamic around people as Jack, but she is sweet, sensible, and sharp as a whip, and she will do whatever she has to in order to be free.
Hope you're all well! Much love!! xoxo

1998, 1973, 2003, 2016
1973- The Exorcist!! admittedly, i haven't seen a lot of movies from the 70s (YET), so pickings were very slim for this one. while i don't find the exorcist to have the immediate and overwhelming sense of terror that contemporary audiences seemed to find in it, it's a VERY well-made movie, and a super interesting and disturbing watch.
1998- The Truman Show! this is one of those movies that i think i first watched in middle or high school when a teacher mentioned it, and it's just really stuck with me ever since. the themes of it almost feel more immediate and relevant now than they did when it was first released-- it feels very prescient in a lot of ways, from predicting the rise of reality tv to anticipating the panopticon that's been created for us by social media and camera culture.
2003- it's a toss-up between School of Rock and Secondhand Lions. school of rock is the movie that i'm more familiar with, having seen it more times recently, but i always really loved secondhand lions when i was younger, and it feels to me like a movie that's sort of unfairly overlooked.
2016- not the best film of 2016 for me, but my Favorite has to be Pee-Wee's Big Holiday. it's not as good a pee-wee herman movie as Adventure, but it DOES still capture a good chunk of the magic and whimsy of the original, and the unexpected gay subtext between pee-wee and joe manganiello delights and perplexes me to this day. it also bears saying that i was in a REALLY dark and difficult place mentally when this movie came out and i really latched onto it for dear life-- i recall watching it twice within 24 hours of it first being made available on netflix. it's like that sometimes.
