unfortunately if I want to independently develop a hypothesis about Rohan's economic/subsistence structure I really need to learn things like the requirements of taking care of horses in the winter and the growing seasons/growing lengths of crops like lettuce, radishes, carrots, and kale, and metalworking time and space commitments, and the types of houses that can be erected and torn down quickly, and the required land area of grazing per horse, and the social organization of Iron Age Eurasian horse cultures, and what other animals might naturally live on the Mark, and productivity and caloric value of mare's milk,
and like. also reread the Lord of the Rings lol
#I think the Rohirrim should have a tradition of eating their horses when they die#burying a horse takes a lot of effort. you aren't doing that for all of them. Kings' horses get buried with the king maybe.#but not normal people's horses. you are making a meal of them and you are celebrating the horse's life and how your beloved horse#who served you so faithfully in life now joins you in death; how it nourishes you now the way it supported you before#the death of a beloved horse has a big funerary feast where the feast is the horse#and like. there do not appear to be buffalo or antelope on the plains of the Mark. They need protein from somewhere#They could also maybe have sheep and goat herds that they take out onto the plains with their horses as pastoralists. another possibility#however. consider. a culture of. Horse-lords are part horse. they take the horses into themselves to honor them and always be part of them#you wouldn't just eat a horse like you'd eat a cow. there is a whole funerary production. you do eat them tho#I'm onto something here#Lord of the Rings

reading the wiki to find out what the hell happened in Trials of Apollo and I REALLY wish Rick had not included the Troglodytes
Fyi- the Troglodytes mentioned in ancient Greek literature weren't fucking lizard monsters, they were a real group of people that lived in Northeast Africa, though wether they group themselves together or were grouped by an outside perception isn't known. The references to them living in caves and eating lizards may be somewhat accurate, but they may also be pure fucking xenophobia, and like the idea of dog tailed Africans, it definitely is an ancient Greek idea with a racist afterlife
#cipher talk#trials of apollo#The details that aren't something you need to be skeptical about are that they had music involving a lute and a harp#And some of them were cattle based pastoralists

Dinka cover their skin in cow dung ash to protect it from mosquito and tsetse, as they are mostly naked. They bleach their hair with cow urine. They are cattle herdsmen and each man rides a "personality ox" which represents him and his manhood
These are the same traits as the god Shiva — covered in dung ash, copper hair, naked save for a tiger pelt, and riding an ox
Early Indo-Aryans were also cattle herdsmen, perhaps they shared similar customs to the Dinka

(Spoiler for Chronicles of Prydain)
I love how Taran is not descended from anyone. No one knows who his parents were. He started as an orphan and he finishes as an orphan. He is who he makes of himself, with the help of his friends (and enemies). A king offers to adopt him, but he declines. He's "chosen" in that people agree he would make a good High King and he's willing to take on that burden.
Taran's not exactly happy about this, either. He's certainly not happy about staying behind to work while his friends sail off to paradise, though it is entirely his own choice. But he knows what needs to be done, and that he is the best option to do it, unfortunately. It's not the most glowingly happy ending ever -- but he's got Eilonwy by his side, since she also chose to give up paradise to stay with him and with Prydain. It sets up a much better future for Prydain, with leaders who know what needs to change.
#chronicles of prydain#lloyd alexander#it's not pastoralist it's not anti-technology and it's not yearning for some better time that never existed#Eilonwy is the secondary main character and she is Taran's full partner who is most definitely not silent

Compilation of place terminology from my worldbuilding project because I'm bored at work. These words are from the language of the Thaish, a semi-nomadic pastoralist culture who live along the harsh, mountainous northwestern coast of the continent Mysska. Regular nouns are made plural by suffixing with -a (ex: dana = mountains, tola = hills, etc).
Ath – ford
Eid – river
Dan – mountain
Fal – highland
Kir/kur – plain, or any other treeless land such as moor or scrub
Kurbral – heathland
Lugh – large lake or fjord
Sen – small lake or pond
Tir – city
Tol – hill or fortress
Varn – forest
#bitter days#worldbuilding#it's a language of economy but i still wanted it to be poetic#also yes they are pastoralists but have cities – some groups are sedentary/agrarian and some are not

I sometimes remember that not everyone’s family are musical theater fans. Or observant Jewish. Or maybe I’m the only person on earth taught about the meaning of the Cain and Able story via the song The Farmer and the Cowman Should Be Friends.

of course I am also the person who watching The Two Towers was wondering who domesticated horses in Middle-Earth so I am also not the best person to say “just suspend your disbelief about this fantasy thing.” No I want to know how Rohan is politically organized such that they are steppe pastoralists when convenient and sedentary agriculturalists when convenient!!! How does their economy work!!!
#Lord of the Rings#worldbuilding#I enjoy interpreting them as semi-sedentary primarily-pastoralists with fall and winter residences in place for planting/harvesting potatoe#And spring and summer spent nomadic across the steppes of Rohan grazing their horses and sheep#But who domesticated potatoes. Who domesticated horses. Where. I Wonder These Things#Did Eru Illuvatar just set down horses fully formed in Middle-Earth. Seems like something Eru might do

Richard Trudgen, the distinguished scholar of the Yolngu, records a poisoning on the station in 1885.
The pastoralists came with one of their wagons, offering horsemeat to many of the clans . . . That evening they ate, thanking the pastoralists for their good gifts. It was only when some of the became violently ill that the Yolŋu realised the Balanda had tricked them with some strange sorcery . . .
Members of many clans died that day . . . Yolŋu struck back, fighting with spears against muskets and carbines.
