In addition to my Monkey Man post from earlier, the always kind & sweet Aparna Verma (author of The Phoenix King, check it out) asked that I do a thread on Hijras, & more of the history around them, South Asia, mythology (because that's my thing), & the positive inclusion of them in Monkey Man which I brought up in my gushing review.
Tumblr media
Hijra: They are the transgender, eunuch, or intersex people in India who are officially recognized as the third sex throughout most countries in the Indian subcontinent. The trans community and history in India goes back a long way as being documented and officially recognized - far back as 12th century under the Delhi Sultanate in government records, and further back in our stories in Hinduism. The word itself is a Hindi word that's been roughly translated into English as "eunuch" commonly but it's not exactly accurate.
Hijras have been considered the third sex back in our ancient stories, and by 2014 got official recognition to identify as the third gender (neither male or female) legally. Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and India have accepted: eunuch, trans, intersex people & granted them the proper identification options on passports and other government official documents.
But let's get into some of the history surrounding the Hijra community (which for the longest time has been nomadic, and a part of India's long, rich, and sometimes, sadly, troubled history of nomadic tribes/people who have suffered a lot over the ages. Hijras and intersex people are mentioned as far back as in the Kama Sutra, as well as in the early writings of Manu Smriti in the 1st century CE (Common Era), specifically said that a third sex can exist if possessing equal male and female seed.
This concept of balancing male/female energies, seed, and halves is seen in two places in South Asian mythos/culture and connected to the Hijra history.
Tumblr media
First, we have Aravan/Iravan (romanized) - who is also the patron deity of the transgender community. He is most commonly seen as a minor/village deity and is depicted in the Indian epic Mahabharata. Aravan is portrayed as having a heroic in the story and his self-sacrifice to the goddess Kali earns him a boon.
Tumblr media
He requests to be married before his death. But because he is doomed to die so shortly after marriage, no one wants to marry him.
No one except Krishna, who adopts his female form Mohini (one of the legendary temptresses in mythology I've written about before) and marries him. It is through this union of male, and male presenting as female in the female form of Mohini that the seed of the Hijras is said to begun, and why the transgender community often worships Aravan and, another name for the community is Aravani - of/from Aravan.
Tumblr media
But that's not the only place where a gender non conforming divine representation can be seen. Ardhanarishvara is the half female form of lord Shiva, the destroyer god.
Shiva combines with his consort Parvarti and creates a form that represents the balancing/union between male/female energies and physically as a perfectly split down the middle half-male half-female being. This duality in nature has long been part of South Asian culture, spiritual and philosophical beliefs, and it must be noted the sexuality/gender has often been displayed as fluid in South Asian epics and the stories. It's nothing new.
Tumblr media
Many celestial or cosmic level beings have expressed this, and defied modern western limiting beliefs on the ideas of these themes/possibilities/forms of existence.
Ardhanarishvara signifies "totality that lies beyond duality", "bi-unity of male and female in God" and "the bisexuality and therefore the non-duality" of the Supreme Being.
Back to the Hijra community.
Tumblr media
They have a complex and long history. Throughout time, and as commented on in the movie, Monkey Man, the Hijra community has faced ostracization, but also been incorporated into mainstream society there. During the time of the Dehli Sultanate and then later the Mughal Empire, Hijras actually served in the military and as military commanders in some records, they were also servants for wealthy households, manual laborers, political guardians, and it was seen as wise to put women under the protection of Hijras -- they often specifically served as the bodyguards and overseers of harems. A princess might be appointed a Hijra warrior to guard her.
Tumblr media
But by the time of British colonialism, anti-Hijra laws began to come in place folded into laws against the many nomadic tribes of India (also shown in part in Monkey Man with Kid (portrayed by Dev Patel) and his family, who are possibly
one of those nomadic tribes that participated in early theater - sadly by caste often treated horribly and relegated to only the performing arts to make money (this is a guess based on the village play they were performing as no other details were given about his family).
Tumblr media
Hijras were criminalized in 1861 by the Indian Penal Code enforced by the British and were labeled specifically as "The Hijra Problem" -- leading to an anti-Hijra campaign across the subcontinent with following laws being enacted: punishing the practices of the Hijra community, and outlawing castration (something many Hijra did to themselves). Though, it should be noted many of the laws were rarely enforced by local Indian officials/officers. But, the British made a point to further the laws against them by later adding the Criminal Tribes Act in 1871, which targeted the Hijra community along with the other nomadic Indian tribes - it subjected them to registration, tracking/monitoring, stripping them of children, and their ability to sequester themselves in their nomadic lifestyle away from the British Colonial Rule.
Today, things have changed and Hijras are being seen once again in a more positive light (though not always and this is something Monkey Man balances by what's happened to the community in a few scenes, and the heroic return/scene with Dev and his warriors). All-hijra communities exist and sort of mirror the western concept of "found families" where they are safe haven/welcoming place trans folks and those identifying as intersex.
These communities also have their own secret language known as Hijra Farsi, which is loosely based on Hindi, but consists of a unique vocabulary of at least 1,000 words.
As noted above, in 2014, the trans community received more legal rights.
Specifically: In April 2014, Justice K. S. Radhakrishnan declared transgender to be the third gender in Indian law in National Legal Services Authority v. Union of India.
Hijras, Eunuchs, apart from binary gender, be treated as "third gender" for the purpose of safeguarding their rights under Part III of our Constitution and the laws made by the Parliament and the State Legislature. Transgender persons' right to decide their self-identified gender is also upheld and the Centre and State Governments are directed to grant legal recognition of their gender identity such as male, female or as third gender.
I've included some screenshots of (some, not all, and certainly not the only/definitive reads) books people can check out about SOME of the history. Not all again. This goes back ages and even our celestial beings/creatures have/do display gender non conforming ways.
There are also films that touch on Hijra history and life. But in regards to Monkey Man, which is what started this thread particularly and being asked to comment - it is a film that positively portrayed India's third sex and normalized it in its depiction. Kid the protagonist encounters a found family of Hijras at one point in the story (no spoilers for plot) and his interactions/acceptance, living with them is just normal. There's no explaining, justifying, anything to/for the audience. It simply is. And, it's a beautiful arc of the story of Kid finding himself in their care/company.

Arya Samaj Marriages: A Simple and Legal Option in Delhi
In Delhi, a bustling metropolis known for its rich cultural tapestry, Arya Samaj marriages play a significant role in providing a simple, legal, and accessible way for couples to tie the knot. Founded on the principles of the Arya Samaj reform movement, an Arya Samaj Marriage in Delhi holds particular appeal for those seeking a streamlined ceremony that adheres to egalitarian ideals.
Core Principles and Legal Validity
The Arya Samaj movement, established in the 19th century, advocated for a return to the core tenets of Vedic scriptures, emphasizing social reform and rejecting elaborate rituals. This philosophy translates into Arya Samaj marriages, which are characterized by their simplicity and focus on the vows exchanged between the bride and groom. The Arya Samaj Marriage Validation Act of 1937 and the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955 recognize Arya Samaj marriages as legally valid throughout India.
Benefits for Delhi Residents
For Delhi residents, marriages organized by an Arya Samaj Mandir in Delhi offer several advantages:
Cost-Effectiveness: Unlike traditional weddings which can be expensive, Arya Samaj ceremonies are significantly cheaper. Mandirs (temples) associated with the movement charge minimal fees, making them an attractive option for couples on a budget.
Simple and Streamlined Process: The rituals involved in an Arya Samaj marriage are straightforward and can be completed within a few hours. This is a stark contrast to elaborate traditional weddings that can stretch over several days.
Inter-Caste and Inter-Faith Marriages: Arya Samaj marriages are open to all castes and religions, making them a suitable choice for couples from different backgrounds. This is particularly relevant in a diverse city like Delhi.
Dowry-Free Tradition: The Arya Samaj strictly opposes the practice of dowry, a social evil that plagues some communities. Choosing an Arya Samaj marriage can be a powerful statement against this custom.
Legal Recognition: As mentioned earlier, Arya Samaj marriages are legally recognized, and couples receive a marriage certificate that holds weight in courts and for official purposes. While the Arya Samaj certificate itself is valid in Court Marriage, registration with the sub-registrar's office offers an additional layer of legal security, especially for obtaining documents like passports or joint loans.
Beyond Legality: Social Impact
The role of Arya Samaj marriages in Delhi extends beyond legal validity. These ceremonies promote social reforms by:
Empowering Women: The Arya Samaj emphasizes gender equality, ensuring that women have a say in the marriage and are not subjected to discriminatory practices.
Combating Child Marriage: By requiring a minimum age for marriage, Arya Samaj weddings help curb the social ill of child marriage.
Promoting Social Harmony: By welcoming couples from all backgrounds, Arya Samaj marriages contribute to a more inclusive and harmonious society in Delhi.
Important Considerations
While Arya Samaj marriages offer numerous benefits, there are some key points to keep in mind:
Limited Customization: Due to their focus on simplicity, Arya Samaj weddings offer less room for elaborate rituals and customs compared to traditional ceremonies.
Social Acceptance: In some communities, Arya Samaj marriages might not hold the same social standing as traditional weddings.
Interfaith Recognition: While legally valid in India, Arya Samaj marriages might not be automatically recognized in all countries. Couples planning to move abroad should research the specific requirements of the destination country.
Conclusion

Once the application is reviewed, you will be notified about the decision. If approved, your visa will be issued and attached to your passport. If rejected, you will be provided with a reason for the refusal.
4. Tips for a Successful Application:

FAQ's
How to Get a Luxembourg Work Visa? To obtain a Luxembourg work visa, the first step is securing a job offer from a Luxembourg employer. Once you have the job offer, your employer must obtain a work permit on your behalf from the National Employment Agency (ADEM). After receiving the work permit, you need to apply for a long-stay visa (D visa) at a Luxembourg embassy or consulate in your home country. You will need to submit documents such as your passport, employment contract, proof of qualifications, and health insurance. Once approved, you can travel to Luxembourg, where you must register with the local authorities and apply for a residence permit within 90 days of arrival. How Can I Get a Luxembourg Work Visa in Dubai? If you are in Dubai and wish to obtain a Luxembourg work visa, you must follow a specific process. First, secure a job offer from a Luxembourg-based employer. Your employer will then need to apply for a work permit through ADEM. After the work permit is granted, you must submit a visa application at the Luxembourg Consulate in Dubai or the nearest embassy handling Luxembourg visa applications. The required documents include a valid passport, employment contract, proof of qualifications, health insurance, and sometimes a police clearance certificate. Ensure you provide all necessary documents to avoid delays in processing your application. How Much Bank Balance Is Required for a Luxembourg Work Visa? While Luxembourg immigration authorities do not specify an exact amount of bank balance required for a work visa, applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial means to support themselves during their stay. This typically involves showing proof of funds through bank statements, which indicate that you have enough money to cover living expenses, accommodation, and other necessities without resorting to public assistance. As a general guideline, having at least a few thousand euros in savings should suffice, but the exact amount may vary depending on individual circumstances and the cost of living in Luxembourg. This process involves the employer proving that the position could not be filled by a local or EU candidate. Sponsorship is a crucial part of the process, as it ties your visa application to a specific job and employer in Luxembourg. Is Luxembourg Easy to Get a Job? Luxembourg's job market can be competitive, but it offers many opportunities, particularly for skilled professionals in finance, IT, and European Union institutions. The ease of finding a job depends on your qualifications, experience, and language skills. Proficiency in multiple languages, especially French, German, and English, is highly valued. Networking and using online job portals can also increase your chances. While it may not be the easiest job market for all professions, Luxembourg's robust economy and diverse industries provide a favorable environment for job seekers with the right skills and qualifications. Who Is Eligible to Work in Luxembourg? Eligibility to work in Luxembourg varies depending on your nationality. EU/EEA and Swiss nationals can work in Luxembourg without a work permit. Non-EU nationals must secure a job offer and have their employer obtain a work permit from ADEM. They must then apply for a long-stay visa and residence permit. Additionally, specific professions, qualifications, and skills may be required depending on the job. Essential Travel Tips for Exploring Uttarakhand: Places to Visit and More
Uttarakhand, often referred to as the "Land of the Gods," is a stunning state in northern India known for its breathtaking landscapes, sacred temples, and rich cultural heritage. With a plethora of destinations to explore, from serene lakes to majestic mountains, Uttarakhand tourism offers something for every traveler. Here are some essential travel tips and top places to visit in Uttarakhand to ensure you have an unforgettable journey.
1. Plan Ahead but Stay Flexible
While planning is crucial for a successful trip, it’s equally important to remain flexible. Research the top places to visit in Uttarakhand, make a rough itinerary, and book accommodations and major attractions in advance. However, leave some room for spontaneous adventures. Sometimes the best experiences come from unexpected detours and unplanned activities.
2. Pack Smart
Packing can make or break your travel experience. Create a checklist to ensure you don’t forget essentials. Roll your clothes to save space and prevent wrinkles, and use packing cubes to stay organized. Always pack a small first aid kit, including any prescription medications, pain relievers, and basic medical supplies. Remember to bring travel-sized toiletries to comply with airline regulations and save space.
3. Stay Connected
In today’s digital age, staying connected is easier and more important than ever. Ensure you have a reliable mobile phone with an international plan or a local SIM card. Download useful travel apps such as maps, translation services, and local guides. Having access to the internet will help you navigate new places, find recommendations, and stay in touch with family and friends.
4. Respect Local Cultures and Customs
One of the most enriching aspects of travel is experiencing different cultures. Show respect by learning a few basic phrases in the local language, such as “hello,” “please,” and “thank you.” Dress appropriately, especially when visiting religious sites, and be mindful of local customs and traditions. Always ask permission before taking photos of people or private property.
5. Stay Safe
Safety should always be a top priority. Keep copies of important documents like your passport, visas, and travel insurance in a secure location. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; instead, use credit or debit cards. Stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded tourist areas, and keep an eye on your belongings to avoid pickpocketing. It's also wise to share your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member.
6. Travel Light
Overpacking can be a burden. Aim to pack only what you need and choose versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched. A lightweight, durable suitcase or backpack will make your journey easier. Remember, you can always do laundry on the go, and you’ll likely pick up souvenirs along the way.
7. Stay Healthy
Travel can be exhausting, so it’s important to take care of your health. Stay hydrated, eat balanced meals, and get plenty of rest. Carry hand sanitizer and use it frequently, especially before eating. If traveling to a country with different food standards, be cautious with street food and always drink bottled or purified water to avoid illness.
8. Budget Wisely
Travel can be expensive, but smart budgeting can help you make the most of your money. Set a daily budget and keep track of your expenses. Look for free or low-cost attractions, and don’t hesitate to negotiate prices in markets. Consider staying in budget accommodations like hostels or vacation rentals, and use public transportation to save money.
9. Document Your Journey
Keeping a travel journal or blog can enhance your travel experience. Write down your thoughts, experiences, and the names of people you meet. Take plenty of photos and videos to capture memorable moments. Not only will this help you remember your trip, but it will also allow you to share your adventures with others.
10. Top Places to Visit in Uttarakhand
Rishikesh and Haridwar: Renowned for their spiritual significance and yoga retreats. Don’t miss the evening Ganga Aarti.
