A/N: Here is my newest fic! I had this idea over the weekend and ended up writing 40 pages 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s been a really long time since I’ve last put this much effort into a story so please enjoy! A share means the world ❤️

Steve’s crisp white sneakers squeak on the linoleum tile as he tosses the bags of chips from his arms into the shopping cart Robin is currently in charge of.

“Watch it, doofus! You’re gonna break all the chips before we even get back to the car.” Robin huffs out as she picks up a bag of Doritos to see if she can ‘feel’ any broken ones inside. She huffs before throwing them back on top of the rest of their products.

Steve ignores her and reaches for the back pocket of his jeans, finding the crumpled handwritten list of items to get for Robin’s birthday party. Nancy and Jonathan were in charge of the actual set up and decoration while Steve and Robin were in charge of food and drinks. It seemed like the easiest task but he and Robin had been crisscrossing around the local supermarket trying and failing to read Nancy’s chicken scratch writing of precise instructions. (Nancy had even gone as far as writing out the products in order of the aisles they were in but Robin and Steve never caught on; both of their eyes moving around the page too quickly to fully process.)

“Can you relax? Most chips come broken anyway, they factor that in with the price,” Steve’s eyes roam over the page, mentally ticking off what they already had in their cart (because they both forgot the pen in the car) so he misses Robin’s annoyed reaction. She leans over the rail of the cart, slapping him on the shoulder to get his attention again. “Don’t tell me to relax!” She points her pointer finger into his chest, ��I am the furthest thing from relaxed, Steve! By midnight tonight I will officially no longer be a teenager. Do you know what that means, Steve?”

Steve rolls his eyes, getting ready for the speech that he’s heard at least a hundred times within the last six months, “Yes I know what it means Rob—”

She quickly waves her hand around his face, effectively silencing him, “I don’t think you do, Steve! I will no longer be able to blame my naivete on being a teenager, I will no longer be able to continue getting the student discount at the movie theater because in certain lighting, I look younger than I am!” Robin continues her tyrant as she begins listing off the things she’ll no longer be able to do. Steve quickly takes control of the shopping cart, hoping she’ll eventually tire herself out (as she usually does) but at least he’ll be able to guide her a few aisles over where they forgot to pick up plastic cups.

“I have been playing it very carefully for those movie discounts. They're supposed to stop at 16 but I have been able to walk a very thin–,” She moves her pointer and thumb in front of Steve's face, pushing them together until there is barely any room left to further prove her point. “Very thin line these past few years.” Steve lightly knocks her hand away from his face as they pass an older woman who scowls at Robin’s yelling and Steve thinks the woman is about two minutes away from calling the manager over to kick them out.

“Yes, your long con of saving ten cents per movie ticket is now catching up to you–” Steve leans more of his weight on the car as he turns into another aisle, narrowly missing a display of cereal boxes.

“Do you know what Tiffany Braddock told me?” Steve begins tuning her out as he scans the aisle for the red plastic cups they need, the last item on their list.

“She said that everything was fine and dandy on April 21st and then–” Robin claps her hands together loudly causing Steve to jump a bit. “Boom! Morning of April 22nd, her twentieth birthday, wakes up with appendicitis.” Steve spots the cups towards the middle of the aisle and picks up his pace a bit as Robin continues, “Doctor said she could have died if she had waited any longer! It’s as if her entire body just shut down at the strike of midnight. And how do we know that’s not gonna happen to me? She was at least athletic in school! As for me, I think we are all well aware of how unathletic I am. It’s almost as if I was bred not to be in sports. My mom always said it was because of my weak ankles but it has to do with my equilibrium or something. There has to be some medical explanation for how uncoordinated I am.”

Steve decides to get the 100 pack instead of the 50 because it’s better to have more cups than less, especially since he had seen the invite list Nancy had put together and she had nearly invited every person Robin has ever even interacted with. She may not have been the most popular in high school, but once Robin got into the local community college and started attending classes that she was actually interested in, it seemed as if people just flocked to her. Steve could admit that sometimes he was a bit jealous about how easily she could talk to people, just going up to somebody random to compliment their shirt and then ending up being invited to their cousin’s wedding two weeks later (true story). Steve liked Robin’s new friends, they were quirky and loud and laughed at all of Robin’s lame jokes, but most importantly, they loved and appreciated her for who she was and that’s really all that Steve could ask for for her.

Steve starts humming along to the Cat Stevens song playing over the market speakers when he realizes he hasn’t been able to hear any of the music since they first walked into the store due to Robin’s constant stream of words. His eyebrows furrow together, as he looks to his right where Robin stood only a second ago.

“Rob?” He calls out her name before seeing a quick flash of her striped shirt as she turns out of the aisle. He swears her mind is always going a mile a minute but sometimes she’s even worse than Henderson, disappearing in the middle of a conversation to pet a dog or something.

“Robin!” He ushers the cart into the direction he saw her leave in, the cart now significantly heavier than it was 10 minutes ago. He quickly spots her in the next aisle, hugging some random woman in front of the cereal section.

“Jesus Christ, we do not have time for this.” Steve whispers under his breath. Leave it up to Robin to make friends within the 10 seconds he lost eyes on her. He pulls his cart up next to Robin and the mystery woman, “Hey Rob, we really have to get going now.”

“Steve, look who it is!” Robin takes a step away from the woman, letting Steve finally take in who exactly was standing in front of him. His breath catches in his throat as he takes in the woman in front of him who he hasn’t seen in four years.

“Noah! Holy shit!” He doesn’t realize just how loud he is as he throws his arms around his old friend. Her hair is shorter now but she still smells like the sweet vanilla shampoo he had recommended to her all those years ago. He can feel her squeezing him back, God he had missed her hugs, he had missed her, they all had.

He pulls away too soon for his liking but he already has a million questions on the tip of his tongue, “What are you doing here? Are you back for good? Did you graduate yet?” He leaves his hands on her shoulders as he takes a step back to get a better look at her. “You look great! Henderson is gonna freak out when he sees you! Did you tell him you were coming back? Holy shit!” Noah smiles back at him with her signature wide grin, dimples peeking out slightly while her cheeks coat with the slightest pink hue as she takes in her rambling friend.

“Steve,” She giggles out, “Please take a breath, I don’t need you passing out in front of the Coco Puffs.” He lets go of her to turn to Robin, whose face mimics his as he points to their mutual friend in front of him with a ‘can you believe this’ look on his face. Robin laughs and mouths back ‘I know!���

“You have to come to Robin’s birthday tonight! It’s at my house. She’s turning twenty and everybody’s back in town for it! Nancy is gonna freak out when she sees you and oh man don’t even get me started on Eddie–” Her smile falters just the slightest bit, and anybody else might not have noticed but Steve sees it right away, after everything they had been through together, he can read her like a book. He sees a small hand holding on to her worn out jean jacket, he hadn’t even noticed that someone else was with her.

“Mama?” Noah quickly steps aside, revealing to Steve the tiny human she had unintentionally been blocking from him. In the front of her cart, in the child's seat, sits a little girl wearing an outrageous outfit of bright red and white polka dot leggings and green flannel shirt that looks two times too big for her. Her brown hair sits messily on the top of her head in a wild bun with curls sticking out all over. Her big eyes look over Steve, before they look back at Noah, leaning closer towards her arm.

“Whoa.” he hears Robin whisper out behind him and he’s almost a hundred percent sure she didn’t mean to say that outloud.

“I–” Noah begins towards Steve but stops herself looking back at the small child, “Baby, these are mommy’s friends from school.” The little girl looks up at Noah and Steve can’t believe just how similar they look; he understands genetics and all but she is literally a spitting image.

“This is Robin and Steve.” Him and Robin both respond silently with a small wave, neither of them really knowing how to interact with a child this young.

“Hi.” “Hello child.” Steve gives Robin a look over his shoulder as she just shrugs back. Noah laughs it off, knowing that all of this was quite the surprise but she really wasn’t expecting to run into anyone this quickly. She had only been back in Hawkins for less than 24 hours. She had rehearsed everything she was going to say in the long car ride back to Indiana, Scarlett mostly sleeping or singing quietly to herself in the back seat, but she thought she would have more time. Time to seek out her old friends and then drop this bombshell on them.

“Guys, this is my daughter, Scarlett.” The child’s gaze looks over Steve and Robin quickly, seemingly assessing them and Steve feels like he’s being judged for every bad decision he’s ever made in his life.

“Wow,” Robin clears her throat before continuing, “So are-are you like married now or something?” Steve automatically looks down at Noah’s hand, she always wore a lot of rings, and it seems her style hasn’t changed that much but the rings have. He looks towards her left hand, where he sees a ring he recognizes.

It instantly takes him back to 1986. To the Upside Down.

He remembers staring at those rings as she tightly held on to his nail bat that he had let her borrow when going after Vecna. He remembers them shining in the moonlight of the eerie dimension as she held pressure down on Eddie’s wounds. Her tears streamed across her dirty face as she shouted at the metalhead who was going in and out of consciousness. Steve has to physically shake his head for the thoughts to disappear.

As if she can feel his gaze, Noah holds left hand with her right hand, blocking Steve’s gaze at the ring. She clears her throat, causing him to make eye contact with her again, “Uh, no. No, just me and Scar.”

The silence is deafening between them as the cheery beats of a Van Morrison song play overhead. It breaks Steve’s heart at how much has changed, he had fought against every nightmare you can think of with Noah, and now he felt as if she was a stranger, because in many ways she had become one.

“That’s awesome!” Robin says a little too loudly, “Are you visiting Pops?” Robin refers to Noah’s grandfather, the only one of her family to have stayed back in Hawkins after the Vecna situation.

Pops ran the only record store in Hawkins (promptly named ‘Top of the Pops’) and was a stubborn son of a bitch. Steve remembers Pops telling him it would take more than an earthquake to get him out of Hawkins.

Noah’s parents had felt differently, selling their house soon after and to everyone’s surprise (and shock), Alice had followed them to New York to stay with family and finally start college in the city. All the Hawkins gang had tried their best to stay in touch with her; it started out with phone calls every night, then the occasional letter, but life soon got in the way for all of them.

The town was rebuilding, Hopper, El, and the Byers had moved back to town. Nancy and Jonathan moved away to Boston. Even Steve himself started taking night courses at Indiana State. But he still remembers those first few weeks when she had left. No one was expecting it, they all assumed she would just move in with Pops, or she and Eddie would get a place together (everyone knew they were destined to be together). But when Eddie had shown up at Steve’s door step, less than two months after defeating Vecna, all of their wounds (both inside and out) still healing, Steve will never forget the look of utter defeat on Eddie’s face.

He and the metal head quickly became friends after March of 1986. Apparently battling monsters in a different dimension will do that to people. If anyone had told high school Steve he would be best friends with the town freak who was accused (and acquitted!) of murder, he would’ve thought they were smoking some of Eddie’s stash. They soon become the brother that neither of them wanted but both of them needed.

Eddie was utterly heartbroken when Noah left, and from the little he told Steve, Eddie had even insisted on going with her, starting a new life away from Hawkins like they always dreamed of, but she had turned him down.

Eddie was never the same after the events of the Upside Down, none of them ever were. They all now carried scars, visible and mentally, that had bonded them for life. But the whole group was torn up after Noah left, because after all they had survived and endured together, she still decided to leave them behind.

Steve remembers when Noah told them, after she had left Eddie’s place, sat everybody down together in the Wheeler’s basement. Steve was furious, Robin had cried, Max had yelled, and Nancy and Henderson had yelled above the rest trying to keep some sort of peace amongst the group. After many, many tears, hugs, and promises, Noah drove off to her new life.

But she was back now. Standing at the Main Street Supermarket back in her hometown of Indiana in front of him and Robin with a child of her own.

“Uh, yeah,” Noah begins to twist the rings on her fingers back and forth, a habit she always had when she was nervous, “Pops fell and broke his leg while doing inventory at the store last week.”

“Oh my god! You should’ve called us! We would’ve checked in on him.” Robin grabs for Noah’s hand, squeezing it lovingly before looking over to Steve, seemingly waiting for him to agree with her.

He clears his throat, “Um, yeah. We definitely would’ve helped him out and brought groceries or whatever.”

“I couldn’t ask you guys to do that.”

Robin seems genuinely confused, “Why not?”

“Because he’s my family,” Noah responds before Steve corrects her, “You’re our family.”

Noah looks away and starts blinking her eyes in quick succession, “Well maybe I just needed an excuse to come back then...” Her voice cracks slightly as a forced smile graces her face but Steve can see there’s so much more behind it. He has so many things he wants to ask her; why did you leave? Why didn’t you ever come visit? What happened while you were away?

“Please come to my birthday tonight!” Robin bounces on the toes of her feet slightly as she quickly tries to change the conversation, “Everyone will be there and I’m sure they will all be so surprised to see you!”

“Oh, I don’t know, Rob–”

“Please! You’ve been gone for so long and this will be my last official night as a teenager!” Noah looks over at Steve who just shrugs in response, they both know that Robin usually has a way of getting what she wants.

Noah turns to Scarlett, brushing an unruly curl away from the little girl's face, “I’d have to ask Pops to babysit…”

“Yes!” Robin claps her hands together, bouncing up and down slightly, “Everyone is coming over Harrington’s at 8. Same address so don’t say you got lost on the way over.” Robin winks and envelopes Noah in another bone crushing hug. Once she releases Noah out of her grip, she leans over the cart to come face to face with Scarlett, “And it was a pleasure meeting you, little one.” She sticks out her hand to shake and Steve can’t hold in his laugh at the utterly confused face Scarlett shoots back at her.

“Scar, baby, we talked about this.” Noah bends slightly to get eye level with her daughter,  “You say ‘thank you, Miss Robin!’” The look on Scarlett’s face remains and Steve can instantly tell the toddler is just as stubborn as her mother, and even comes with the same facial expressions. Noah turns back to Steve and Robin, “As you can see, we’re still working on our manners. But, uh, you sure I won’t be like a nuisance or anything?”

“What?! Fuck that! It’s my party and I want you there!” Noah’s eyes grow at Robin’s outburst. A wide grin comes over the little girl in the shopping cart, “She cust-ed, Mommy! Quarter, please!” She sticks out her little hand and laughs, seemingly pleased with how this is all playing out.

“Dam-Dang it, Robin!” Noah reaches into the pocket of her jean jacket and pulls out a bag of quarters, handing one to the little girl who gleefully squeals and puts it into the pocket on her shirt.

“We’re trying to learn not to use curse words so much because somebody,” Noah side eyes Scarlett who again just giggles at her mother, “Thinks it’s funny to repeat the things mommy says at home to their friends at daycare.” Scarlett’s hands flew to her face in a lame attempt at covering herself as she broke out into hysterics.

Robin bursts out laughing at the toddler's displays, and Steve can’t help but follow along.

“Yes, ha ha. Mommy loved meeting with your teachers about that one.” Noah tickles Scarlett’s sides causing the toddler to let out a little screech of laughter. The loud speaker crackles around them to announce a clean up on aisle three. Noah looks down at her watch, “I’m sorry guys, but we’ve really got to get going.”

“Oh yeah of course!” Robin grabs her hand again, “I’ll see you tonight, right?” Noah pauses for a split second, and Steve can see a flash of fear come over her features before she straightens up and nods her head, “Of course, we have so much to catch up on!”

“You’re telling me!” Robin shakes her head towards Scarlett who is now distracted by the bird on the Fruit Loops box. Noah sniggers, “It was great seeing you both. I’ll probably be a little later tonight because of bedtime and all.”

“Right, that’s no problem, you know where to find us!”

Noah’s eyes fall down to the tip of her well loved leather boots, she opens her mouth to ask something but stops herself instead, leaning into Steve for another hug. Steve wants to ask her if she’s alright, or question her about what she was going to say but she speaks up first as she pulls away from him, “See you later, Harrington.”

Him and Robin watch her and Scarlett head off into another aisle as they walk in silence towards the cash registers. They don’t say much to each other as they are both replaying the conversation in their heads.

It isn’t until they get to Steve’s car that Robin asks the big question, “So, do you think Eddie knows?”

Steve looks at Robin, visibly confused, “That Noah is back? Probably not. She said she just came back yesterday.” Steve goes to grab another few bags from the cart, fitting them into his trunk like a giant game of tetris.

“No, idiot. Do you think Eddie knows about his kid?” Steve drops the bags in his hands and watches as they tumble out of the paper bag and onto the concrete.

For a moment, the only thing surrounding him was darkness, everything within him, his mind a blur of thoughts as if they were pressed underwater, as if he was pressed underwater, until he realised he couldn't breathe, his thoughts cleared and the source of heavy weight became a hand at the back of his neck, a firm grip, not restricting his breathing by squeezing his throat, but by holding him down in cold, dark water.

The sting when his eyes flew open allowed the veil of darkness and confusion to ultimately lift from his mind, brought the feeling back to his limbs and allowed him to take control and try to struggle – to not avail. It took him mere seconds to comprehend that his hands were tried down to what seemed to be the armrests of a chair, left him helpless as he tried to hold his breath, to not allow too much water into his airways, desperately trying to throw his head back and out of the water, to startle whoever was holding him down somehow, his fingers shaking the more it dawned on him that there was no escaping, his thoughts once again beginning to blur as his struggle ceased completely out of force rather than choice.

And then his head was pulled back, the grip firm and forceful until it finally let go. Alex coughed, spluttering and gasping for air as he blinked the water from his eyes, the room he found himself in not much lighter than the inside of the container of water in front of him had been, and even without his sight, he would have been able to put names to the men in front of him with ease. The second stepped into sight with a satisfied grin, stretching his fingers after having held Alex down for so long.

“Welcome, Turner.”

Alex's gaze darkened as he tried his hardest to swallow the embarrassment, disregard the position he'd been put into, by who he'd been put into it, his expression resembling one that never faded when he sat at the far end of the table at a meeting in his own headquarters. “Vai all'inferno.” His voice was husky, his throat dry, but it was loud enough for them to hear, for them to know that he was not going to play their game.

“Do you really think you're in a position where you can make demands?” Alfonso asked, a simple gesture with his hand signaling for Mancini to step back, to let him take the lead. “Another minute underwater and you wouldn't be speaking to me right now.”

Alex chuckled darkly, shaking his head as his lips curled into a bitter smile. “Grazie, Alfonso” he said. “Fank yeh for not drownin' meh, yeh're too kind.”

“Turner-...”

“I mean, comes as a surprise though, dunnit? Takin' yehr enemeh in teh kill 'im? Go on then.”

Without a word from either of the men opposite him, Mancini stepped behind him again, his hand slowly wrapping around the back of his neck, yet this time tumbling back slightly when Alex pushed his head back. “Dun't touch meh again, yeh fookin' bastard.”

“Alfonso?” Mancini asked, merely waiting for the command to push Alex's head underwater again.

Alfonso shook his head. “I want to hear what he's got to say.”

“I'm not tellin' yeh shit. Pezzo di merda. But yeh alreadeh kno' tha', dun't yeh? Didn't kill meh, sorprendente, because yeh fink I'm gunna tell yeh summat. But tha's not meh, fica, tha's yeh and yehr vile little traditrice, eh?”

In that moment, it was like his heart, his chest became as cold as the water that was still running down his face, soaking his hair. It wasn't just Adriana that was a traitor. And as he looked back into Alfonso's eyes, stared defiantly, he grew more and more aware that once again he had corrupted, taken the only thing Alex had ever wanted, strategically, had over the years grown to know his enemy so well, just as well as Alexander knew him, knew his weaknesses and for a moment, he wondered if things could have been different had he not gotten up on his high horse and walked out of the meeting with Mancini, but it wouldn't have changed Jade betraying him, but maybe, just maybe, he would have been able to deal with the situation properly, the relationship could have been different.

For the next few hours, sleep was out of the question. It wasn't like she didn't try, tried to sleep as well as convince Helders to let her out of the apartment, to let her talk to somebody, do other members of security, Serena, Alexander's parents. Her thoughts were running, revolving around the same two things, a vicious cycle she couldn't escape.

She wondered if things would have been different had Alexander found out about what she'd told Alfonso a few minutes earlier, if he had stopped prioritising her, if he'd have taken Helders with him, if Helders would have had the means to bring him back home safely instead of staying with her when she didn't need and Alexander's eyes didn't deserve his protection. She'd tried to convince Helders, had told him everything she'd told Alfonso and Alexander, told him with her voice shaking what he'd said to her, that it didn't matter protecting her, not to him, not to her herself, but he insisted on his orders, remained unfazed, then after her third attempt of coaxing him to let her out, had left her inside the apartment and positioned himself outside instead.

In her mind, she was already a million steps ahead, was putting together the men Alexander had put together to bring her back when she'd been taken, she tried to remember details about where she'd been held but it'd blurred in her mind, she'd tried her hardest to forget, had been so confined to the room and what had happened there that the memories carried nothing she wanted to hold on to. She tried to figure out what Alexander's protocol would entail, what else he would have set in motion to keep her from putting herself in danger, felt guilty now not because of what she'd said, but because she unrightfully was still top priority in whatever protocol he'd put in place, when it was most important to get him now.

She swallowed hard, blinking when the first beams of sun tickled her face as she turned onto her side, realising the night had passed, the sun was rising and she hadn't gotten a second of sleep. It felt strange being in Alexander's bed without him, the sofa even more so, and she rose from the position she'd been in for way too long, exchanged her simple lace thong for a set of bright blue lingerie, fixing her make-up in the mirror she passed on her way to the door, brushing her hair down and smoothing it with her fingers before she knocked on the apartment door.

“Yeh're not gunna fookin' go anehwhere, Jade” Helders called from the outside. “'s wha' Turner ordered, I fookin' told yeh.”

“I just want to ask you something” she said, her voice now much calmer, yet pleading, hopeful, her heart skipping a beat when he door clicked and she stepped back, looking at Helders with wide eyes, smirking triumphantly when she saw a flicker of change on his face, even though it was just for a moment. There was something to work with. “Can I have my gun back?” She asked, licking her lips before pushing her lower lip forward in a sultry pout, her eyes half-lidded as she looked back at him.

“Yeh dun't need it” Helders stated firmly, shaking his head, his eyes resting on hers exclusively.

She sighed, reaching out to smooth down the material of his suit jacket, toying with the buttons. “Please” she whispered. “I need to defend myself.”

“Jade” he snapped, stepping back slightly. “Yeh're not gunna fookin' distract meh. Turner told meh yeh'd do this if weh ever came teh deal wif a situation like this. 'e knew yeh'd put yehrself in danger tryin' teh 'elp.”

She pressed her lips together, tried to replace the pain with confidence, she needed to push through. “He doesn't care about me” she said quietly. “It doesn't matter if I'm in danger. Not to him, not to me. Not right now. Give me my gun so I can be of use.”

“I'll protect yeh, Jade, yeh dun't need it” he countered, his eyes wide, watchful. “Get back inside, yeh're not gunna distract meh or seduce meh some'ow like yeh do 'im.”

“Are you sure?” She asked, stepping forward again, so close that their bodies were hardly touching. She just needed to keep him distracted long enough to take back her weapon, to get past him and then past the guards downstairs, although maybe she could fool them. She just had to do something.

“Rivera, I'm married” Helders stated, unimpressed even by her best efforts. “I'm also a professional. D'yeh realleh fink I'm Turner's 'ead of securiteh for nothin'?”

Jade sighed, stepping back slowly. “I refuse to sit around and do nothing. And I will do whatever it takes to get him back.” Her face within a split second went from vulnerable, hopeful to firm, self-assured. She was not going to let anybody stop her, not Turner's protocols, not his head of security. “Not when he's in danger. They're going to kill him.”

Helders sighed, licking his lips. “They need him alive” he stated. “They shot themselves in the foot kidnappin' 'im like this. Fookin' reckless, they're desperate. It's the worst move they could 'ave possibleh made. I assure yeh, 'e's alreadeh got a plan. He's probableh laughing about it reyht now.”

“What exactly is the protocol?” She asked, discarding his words as a cheap attempt to get her to leave him alone, to undermine her resistance.

Helders sighed. “We don't act until tomorrow. 'e's got plans for this kind of situation and weh'll carreh them out exactleh as 'e wants. He'll be back 'ere in no time.”

“Tomorrow?” She gasped, her voice rising in pitch. “He could be dead by then!”

He shook his head, slowly drawing the door to shut it again. “Get sum sleep.”

A $500,000 Redo: How One Couple Got Their Mojo Back

About once every couple of years, a Financial Samurai post goes a little nuts on the internet. Recently, Twitter got a hold of “Scraping By On $500,000 A Year: Why High Income Earners Can’t Escape The Rat Race” and consumed it like a rabid dog shaking a rag doll.

I first started noticing Twitter activity Friday morning, March 24. Overnight, it seemed, about 500 new tweets of the post had appeared. By Monday, March 27, the tweet count had risen to a whopping 40,000+! What the heck was going on?!

Apparently, the internet found the $500,000 a year couple’s budget so absurd it started poking fun at the post. Some say my chart has even reached meme status. Well pinch my nuts! I get to check off another bucket list item before I croak.

The budget I originally posted is actually a real life couple’s budget shared with me to share with you. Their budget has been corroborated by hundreds of other couples and individuals making similar incomes while living in an expensive city like NYC, SF, London, Paris, LA, and Hong Kong. Financial Samurai already gets over 1 million organic pageviews a month, so it’s easy to gather feedback. Just check the comments on the post to see for yourself.

Here are some points I wanted to make from the post:

1) It’s not what you make, it’s what you keep. Without discipline, it’s easy to spend everything you make. Lifestyle inflation is the biggest culprit for why folks never feel like they have enough. It’s not just the cars and houses that people compete on, it’s also the schools parents want their children to attend. Hopefully, the post encourages everyone to take a hard look at their own finances or if they haven’t already done so, create and monitor their own budget. “If you can’t manage it, you can’t improve it.” – Peter Drucker.

2) High income comes with high costs. Yes, it’d be nice to earn big bucks living in the heartland of America, where I’m bullish, but in the heartland, those high income jobs are harder to come by. If one shouldn’t spend any more than 3X – 5X their gross income on a home, how much does one have to make in order to afford the $1.2M median home price in SF or NYC?  Answer: $240,000 – $400,000. Unfortunately federal income taxes do not account for cost of living.

3) Think about geo-arbitrage. Technology and the internet are allowing people to untether themselves from an office. Find companies that allow you to work remotely in a lower cost area. You might not get to relocate to Bali, Indonesia, but there are plenty of fantastic cities that are much cheaper than NYC, SF, LA, Boston, and Washington DC. I’ve interviewed several CEOs in SF and they all say that given SF’s tight labor market and high cost of living, they are hiring more remote workers. Better yet, have your own internet-based business. Take advantage of the best technological shift in history.

4) Save and invest often over the long run. There’s great value in maxing out your 401k and building home equity over time, even if you have very little left over. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only about 55% of the American workforce has access to a 401(k) and only about 38% of the total workforce participate. Doing some low level math, that means roughly 31% of those who have access to a 401(k) are not participating. I strongly believe that over time, home equity is one of the major reasons for a widening wealth gap between home owners and renters. Find a place you know you’ll be for the next 10 years and try and get neutral real estate by owning your own place. Of course, be responsible with your purchase.

5) What it’s all for at the end of the day. I know plenty of high earning people who are not happy because they are stressed at work and can never spend as much time with the people they love. Not only that, they know the work they’re doing isn’t really helping society so they feel they’re selling their souls. They can’t leave due to an unhealthy desire for prestige, money, and power. Realize there’s a wonderful life beyond just making lots of money. Seek your happiness before you look back on life full of regret.

I realize it’s only human to judge others, even if we’ve never walked in their shoes. However, simply judging others does nothing to improve our own situations. Therefore, let’s do our best to approach things with open minds. With open minds, progress can be made.

Income Taxes ($9,280 savings): I’ve brought the couples effective total tax rate down to 38% from 40%, saving them $9,280 a year. Their total tax bill of $176,320 includes federal income tax, state income tax, city income tax, FICA tax, and sales tax. It’s very hard to bring your tax liability down as a W2 wage earner. Having a business is consistently one of the key differentiators between the rich and the rest of us. If you’ve got a business, you can deduct many of your overlapping life expenses as a business expense e.g. business trip to Honolulu for a semi-annual offsite. You can also contribute more to your pre-tax retirement savings.

Property Taxes (* $10,595 savings): The property tax rate in Park Slope, Brooklyn (King’s County) is surprisingly only 0.627% compared to the New York State average of 1.5%, and the national average of 1.2% (that’s what it is here in California). Therefore, on an assessed value of $1,500,000, the couple really only pays $9,405 in property taxes versus the $20,000 originally estimated. However, because there are all sorts of weird property tax assessments in NYC, I’m still inclined to believe the figure is higher. If anybody owns in Brooklyn, please share your wisdom.

Childcare ($6,000 savings): If you haven’t figured out by now, children are expensive! Every parent wants their best for their kids, which is why demand is relatively inelastic the higher prices for child-related expenses go. Given all the backlash from the internet, the couple decides to find a better deal, a little father away. They’re now spending $1,500/month per kid compared to $1,750/month per kid. As their kids enter kindergarten and spend more time on lessons, childcare costs will naturally decline.

Food For Four ($2,400 savings): Unfortunately, date night every two weeks has got to go! Each date on average cost the couple $200 when you add up transportation, food, wine, tip, taxes, and a Broadway show. Try landing a ticket for Hamilton for under $50. Good luck! Therefore, the couple is now saving $2,400 a year. Instead of going out to eat they start cooking more at home and ordering from a variety of food delivery services. Not only is this couple saving money, they’re also eating healthier for a double win.

Home Maintenance ($3,800): Both parents start spending time getting smart on YouTube to fix their own toilets, paint their own walls, and unclog their own faulty dishwasher valves. They also do all their own cleaning. Nothing is more attractive than being handy with a wrench and smart in the office. Total annual savings: $3,800

Three Vacations A Year ($3,000): By deciding to vacation in NYC for one of their three vacations, the couple saves $3,000 on airfare, hotels, and activities. NYC is the greatest city in the world for six months of the year. There are so many free and fun activities all around. There’s a reason 48.8 million people annually visit NYC! Yes, $15,000 still seems like a lot of money, but it’s divided among four people across 21 days. Without living it up a little on vacation, this 60+ hour a week couple might burn out at work or blow up their marriage because they hate life so much.

Children’s Lessons ($6,000 savings): Screw violin! I learned violin for three years and hated it. Even if I got any good, it’s not like I’d bust it out at a party and play. That’s what a guitar is for, which can be easily learned online for free. Athletics is part of Americana, so the kids are still receiving swimming and tennis lessons. Who knows, both of them might get athletic scholarships one day. At the very least, college admissions officers and employers look much more favorably on scholar athletes. Just having a 4.0 GPA and a near perfect SAT doesn’t cut it anymore, especially if you’re Asian.

Charity ($6,000 savings): Sorry alma mater, your tuition and endowment are already massive enough. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford all have endowments over $20 billion. MIT, U Penn, Michigan, Texas A&M, and Columbia all have endowments over $10 billion. It’s best they save their money for those who really need help. Giving $1,000 a month to Feed The Children means a lot to this couple. 300 million children go to bed hungry every day while 68% of America is obese. Something is wrong with this picture and they want to do their part in making a difference.

Miscellaneous ($5,000 savings): Something always comes up, otherwise why doesn’t everybody have a perfect financial record? Because this couple is now more self-sufficient, they should be able to minimize any excess spending or surprises. Financial independence is all about generating enough passive income streams to cover your expenses indefinitely. If you can also build cooking, cleaning, fixing, and maintenance skills, you’re going to be golden. Not too long ago we had to start our own fires and hunt for our own food. A self-sufficient woman is a rich woman.

College Savings ($12,000 expense): One glaring expense the internet pointed out was that this couple wasn’t saving for their children’s college education. Annual tuition alone now costs $15,000 – $55,000 at many universities (William & Mary in-state tuition = $16,370, Columbia University tuition = $52,476). Add room and board and we’re talking $30,000 – $80,000 annual outlays for four years! Can you still afford to give money to your alma mater? In 10-15 years when this couple’s kids attend college, the cost could easily climb by 50%. Let’s hope these kids get into public Bronx High School of Science, Stuyvesant High School, or Brooklyn Technical High School to save their parents the expense of private grade school tuition. Total Cash Flow Improvement: $48,875

Total Cash Flow After Improvement: $56,175 ($48,875 + $7,300)

Total Cash Flow + Net Worth Addition: $117,175 after contributing $36,000 to their 401ks and paying down $25,000 in mortgage principal.

$117,175 equals a respectable 23.4% gross savings rate or an impressive 36% after tax savings rate once we adjust for paying taxes on the $36,000 401k contribution amount. This couple should be able to build their net worth by at least $1.2 million every 10 years, assuming their incomes don’t continue to rise and their expenses stay the same.

The problem with this new scenario is that despite optimizing their budget by $48,875 a year, they still have a $231,505 annual after-tax nut to cover. Given they have no other significant passive income streams, they need to likely work for at least another 18 years until after their kids graduate from college to even consider doing something other than 60+ hour workweeks in the law office. But given 80%+ of people wash out of big law by year eight, anticipating to last for 18 years isn’t very prudent.

The point of aggressively saving and developing a side-hustle when you’re young is so that you one day have the OPTION to do something else with your time when you start hating your life. Believe me, that day will come because everybody will hate their job at one point. Unfortunately, to many people start aggressively saving and side-hustling AFTER they start hating their jobs. Misery ensues.

There is NO rewind button in life, which means we all have to try and anticipate the future today.

Observations From The Internet’s Response

With over 42,000 tweets, 5 million+ views of the chart, and media mentions from CNBC, The LA Times, Jalopnik, MarketWatch, Apple News and many more, it’s been fascinating to observe the reactions. Here are three common threads I’ve observed:

1) Shoot first, ask questions later. A study by the Media Insight Project, an initiative of the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the American Press Institute highlighted that 60% of readers just read headlines, and not the actual article. As a result, the use of “Scraping By” instigated many people to condemn this couple’s budget (and me by extension) because they hadn’t read the substance behind the post. The featured image in my post with the caption, “Help! I’m drowning from all my money!” provided a clue to the astute reader that I was being facetious.

2) People see what they want to see. With over 100,000 comments left on Financial Samurai since it started in 2009, I’ve observed this phenomenon many times. There is a perpetual echo chamber of people refusing to see the other side. It plays out in politics, stubborn arguments with friends and loved ones, generational wars, and in the work place all the time. The more we can try and understand another’s point of view, the more we can improve. Trying to see the other side is why I’ve given over 500 Uber rides, keep up with my Mandarin, coach high school tennis, constantly travel abroad, and invite people from different backgrounds to write guest posts. It’s easy to contract Dunning-Kruger disease and think anybody can do it if they just work hard enough. When you see the other side, you gain empathy and understanding.

3) Humor is incredibly effective. Understandably, a lot of people were mad at the budget because 99% of households earn less than $500,000 a year and must make tough choices to make ends meet. You can take a negative stance like Pulitzer Prize winner, Michael Hiltzik did with his column in the LA Times. You can focus on class warfare like wealthy Boston University millennial alumni, Jeremy Binckes did in his Salon article. Or, you can take Kristen Lee from Jalopnik’s approach and focus on humor to get things across.

Remember, the way you approach anything is a reflection of your own state of mind. You have a choice to look on the bright side or on the dark side. I’d certainly much rather grab a beer with an uplifting person like Kristen, than listen to Jeremy attack the woes of high income earners. When you come from a privileged family, it’s quite interesting to witness his negative viewpoint on wealth. Perhaps there’s an area of “rich guilt” that I can delve deeper in a future post.

Control What You Can Control

Writing about personal finance is generally pretty boring. After all, if everybody spent less than they made, everything would be just fine. But we know nobody is perfect. Some people actually make mega millions over their careers and still file for bankruptcy! We’re all trying to get a little better.

Love or hate my article, I’m just happy that so many more people have decided to take a good look at their finances. Many have written in to say sheepishly they’ve finally created a budget of their own, but have not told anyone for fear of judgement. Who knows, maybe the next financial crisis won’t be so bad because millions more people are more prepared after reading this post!

Making a lot of money is great, but building wealth that can generate money for you so you don’t have to slave your life away is even better. Sooner or later you will tire of the same old grind at work. When the time comes, you want to be armed with multiple income streams and a war chest of savings to carry you through to your next adventure.

It’s been a little over five years since I had a day job. Even though I don’t make a lot of money, I’ve got enough to be happy. It feels amazing to help other people with their financial problems. Find your enough and you’ll feel like the richest person in the world!

Rich And Marcus’ Entertaining Podcast – I couldn’t stop smiling and laughing at some of the commentary about the couple’s budget.

Readers, anybody want to try optimizing this $500,000 a year couple’s budget further without causing them to spend money for marriage counseling? Anybody want to verify the property tax amount in King’s County, NY? What else have you observed from other people commenting on this rich couple? 

Why is there is much hatred towards people who pay over $176,000 in income taxes AND contributes to help eliminate child hunger? I never presented this couple as whining about their money as some in the media have portrayed. I simply highlighted how a couple can easily spend almost all their $500,000 salary if they aren’t careful.
