Genus: Catharopeza

Whistling Warbler (Joseph Smit)

Originally described in Leucopeza, more recent genetic analysis suggested a split, as Whistling and Semper's Warbler are not sister species. Leucopeza has a relationship with another warbler genus, while Catharopeza is lies outside of the Setophaga clade. With katharos meaning 'bright', or 'clean' and peza as 'foot', we get "clean footed" or "bright footed", which I would assume is a reference to their pale legs. In the picture above, one might assume the black-and-white bird is a male and the brown-and-buff bird to be the female, but adults of this species share the same coloration. The browner bird is actually showing a young bird's plumage.

An endangered species, not much is written about the Whistling Warbler other than some descriptions of plumage and habitat. They seem to be very stout in body compared to other wood-warblers, but forage in a way similar to American Redstart.

Carbón vegetal

Este proyecto se inició en la comunidad de Tezoncualpan Cuautepec, Hidalgo.se les da una capacitación por parte de instancias gubernamentales a los pobladores ejidatarios y nace la idea de realizar este proyecto de carbón vegetal.

El proyecto de hornos metálicos para la elaboración de carbón vegetal, este proyecto se lleva a cabo con los Ejidatarios de Tezoncualpan de Cuautepec, adquieren hornos metálicos para la elaboración y comercialización de carbón vegetal, elaborado con encino.

En este respecto quienes realizan este proyecto, son el director de desarrollo económico y empresarial del ayuntamiento de cuautepec de Hinojosa Hidalgo, Sergio Emilio Peza, en coordinación con con la Comisión Nacional Forestal (CONAFOR), así como el Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias(INIFAP).

En este rubro quienes reciben capacitación son los ejidatarios del ejido de Tezoncualpan, por parte de Julio Ríos Saucedo, quien es doctor en ciencias forestales e investigador del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN).

De esta manera, Cuautepec de Hinojosa, sería la segunda demarcación en el país, que contaría con el funcionamiento de un equipo de esta naturaleza, ya que el otro opera en el estado de Sinaloa.

De manera objetiva en este proyecto sustentable Se han cumplido con todos requisitos tanto legales y ambientales, uno de los beneficios está diseñado para no contaminar el 80 % es vapor el 20% es humo, buscando un lugar estratégico para su asentamiento, se busca traer fuente de empleo y derrama económica para la localidad y Municipio. Así lo explico el Presidente del Comisariado Ejidal de Tezoncualpan, Javier Martínez. Las presentaciones que se tienen previstas para la comercialización, son de 5kg, 3 kg y 2.5 kg Barrio libre (2024).

La Peza to Quentar

29km in 7:20 hours walking time, about 850m of elevation and a lot of downhill.

We left around 7:20am this morning knowing it was a long day and there was a chance of rain. Today was another beautiful day and for the main part the walking wasn’t too hard.

After leaving La Peza we were on a gravel road for about 6km before joining a path that ran next to a road. The road was cyclists paradise and there were a few motor bikes as well.

We eventually came to a decision point. Today could be split into two short days, which we weren’t keen to do. We were however keen to head into the town for a coffee, snack and loo stop before heading back onto the Camino. This added about 1km to the day. While we were walking into Toćon we were watching the cyclists and then we saw some Movistar riders with a team car going through their paces - so excited!

After leaving Toćon we had a lovely walk through fields full of wildflowers before getting back onto the Camino which then took us again onto a great gravel road. We seemed to be in a geopark as there were people hiking and we saw a group of about 30-40 women who were on an organised gravel tour. Apparently it started in Granada and is about 700km long.

After a long downhill followed by a long uphill we stopped for lunch at an abandoned mine site. I’m not exactly sure what they mined there but parts of the path looked like they had talcum powder on it.

Not long after lunch we hit the highest point of the whole Mozarabe Way and then a very long descent. While we were having lunch we’d been checking out the dark clouds and thought we might be lucky and it would miss us. As we started the descent we were in brilliant sunshine but could hear thunder all around us. There were spectacular views on the descent but we didn’t take too many photos as we were worried about the weather.

Finally we entered town, still descending (knee not happy) and we started to get a few spots of rain. We found our hotel and by the time we’d checked in and headed back out for a drink the rain was starting to settle in, we were so lucky.

While we were having a drink our fellow pilgrim from last night arrived (his name is maybe Jean Claude and he’s French living in Belgium). He left this morning before us so we were quite shocked that he’d only just arrived. Turns out a group of the female gravel riders had stopped at our turn off and were covering the signs so he went the wrong way. Poor guy added about 7km to an already long day.

After a shower we met maybe Jean Claude for dinner (ridiculous I could pretty much tell you the man’s life history but hazy on his name). We had a pleasant evening and we’re meeting him for breakfast in the morning and starting out together. Seems he’s met no-one on the Camino. It’s a shame, if he’d started a day earlier he would have been in with our crowd. Thankfully he speaks very good English.

Semper's Warbler (Joseph Smit)

The last credible report of Semper's Warbler is from 1961, leading many to believe this species has gone extinct. Very little of its life history has been studied, but a possible piece of its lifestyle could be as a ground-dwelling species. This could be tied to the theorized reason behind its decline, the introduction of mongoose to St. Lucia island in the 1800s. The etymology of the genus comes from leukos 'white' and peza 'foot', giving us "white footed".

While the genus used to include the Whistling Warbler, more recent analysis shows it is more closely related to Oporornis.
