Because today's devices are so much more powerful and can hold so much more information than ever before, the risks are increasing, says Martin Hack, information security expert and executive vice president of NCP Engineering, a software company that helps businesses with their secure remote access systems. Add to that our tendency to carry both personal and business information around with us on the same device, and our mobile devices have never looked so appealing to hackers, he says.
As specific mobile devices become more popular, they become more of a target for hackers. "Five years ago, the vulnerabilities were Microsoft-based and targeting PCs. Apple tended not to be targeted so often," says Nocera. "But, in the last year and a half or so, we're seeing a shift. More and more often we're seeing either Android- or iPhone-based vulnerabilities being targeted. We predict that by 2014 you'll see those types of vulnerabilities being the most targeted as more and more users go to those mobile devices."

"Avoid using dictionary words. Instead, [use] acronyms for things like favorite songs, restaurants or other items known only to you. And change the password frequently--at least once every six months." If you're just not feeling clever enough to create your own passwords, programs like RoboForm will do it for you.
3. Don't mess with the security settings. Nocera notes that most of the default browser settings in Android, iPhone, and Blackberry phones are fairly secure out of the box. "I recommend not going in to change browser security settings--they're pretty good already," he says.
4. Avoid unencrypted public wireless networks. Such Wi-Fi networks require no authentication or password to log into, so anyone can access them--including the bad guys. In some cases, bad guys set up an open network to snare unsuspecting people. Encrypted networks, on the other hand, are those that require an ID or password for access--you'll find such networks at many hotels and coffee shops that offer Wi-Fi services. These networks have two different types of security--WEP (wired equivalent privacy) and WPA (Wi-Fi protected access); the second is most secure. Even encrypted networks, though, have risks--it's possible for bad guys to gain access to encrypted networks at a hotel or café, for instance, so be cautious about the sorts of things you do on such networks.
Besides avoiding connecting to unencrypted networks, turn off Wi-Fi when you're not using it. This will prevent you from automatically connecting to networks (and it will extend your device's battery life).
5. Paying to access a Wi-Fi network doesn't mean it's secure. Access fees do not equal security. Just because you pay a fee to access a Wi-Fi network doesn't mean that the network is secure.
6. URLs beginning with 'https:' are safer (but not foolproof). Whenever you're accessing a site where you'll be sharing personal or confidential information--your bank's site, for example--you want to make sure that you're doing so securely. The s in https means that you're connected to the site via the Secure Socket Layer (SSL). In layman's terms, this means that all data transmitted to that particular Website over the Internet is encrypted.

These types of attacks are rare, but to guard against them, make sure you're both connected to a secured network and that Websites use https when you're entering sensitive information.
In addition, says Nocera, most e-mail service providers have both a clear text option (that sends unencrypted data) and an encryption (SSL) option. "Make sure you have the SSL option enabled," he says.
7. Use VPN. If you have access to a VPN (virtual private network), use it. A VPN provides secure access to an organization's network and allows you to get online behind a secure layer that protects your information.
8. Turn off cookies and autofill. If your mobile device automatically enters passwords and login information into Websites you visit frequently, turn that feature off. It's convenient, but it can also be a privacy threat. To get back some of the convenience that autofill offers, you can try third-party apps, available for most platforms, that can manage saved passwords with a higher level of security. Mac OS X, for instance, comes with a built-in password manager--Keychain. KeePass is a free, open-source password manager for some versions of Windows. For iOS and Android smartphones, there's LastPass, 1Password, and SplashID. Using them is not as secure as turning off autofill altogether, but it's one way to strike a good balance. In the end, a little inconvenience can go a long way toward added security.
9. Watch your apps! Apps are great, and many are free, so it can be tempting to download with abandon. But, Nocera cautions, you should be selective about the apps you download, particularly in the Android market, because "the Android app market is a little bit more open," without the strict developer guidelines found in Apple's App Store. Do some due diligence before downloading apps. Make sure that you trust the developer and have taken the time to review some of comments.

When you’re typing, the auto-suggestions above the keyboard now offer movie names, song names, or place names that you’ve recently viewed in other apps. Auto-suggestions in Siri, too, include terms you’ve recently read. And if you book a flight or buy a ticket online, iOS offers to add it to your calendar.
AirPlay 2. If you buy speakers from Bose, Marantz, and a few other manufactures (unfortunately, not Sonos), you can use your phone to control multi-room audio. You can start the same song playing everywhere, or play different songs in different rooms.
Shared “Up Next” playlist. If you’re an Apple Music subscriber, your party guests or buddies can throw their own “what song to play next” ideas into the ring.
Screen recording. Now you can do more than just take a screenshot of what’s on your screen. You can make a video of it! Man, will that be helpful for people who teach or review phone software! (Apple didn’t say how you start the screen recording, though.)
Storage Help
Running out of room on the iPhone is a chronic problem. Apple has a few features designed to help:
Camera app. Apple is adopting new file formats for photos (HEIF, or High Efficiency Image Format) and videos (H265 or High Efficiency Video Codec), which look the same as they did before but consume only the half the space. (When you export to someone else, they convert to standard formats.)
Messages in iCloud. When you sign into any new Mac, iPhone, or iPad with your iCloud credentials, your entire texting history gets downloaded automatically. (As it is now, you can’t see the Message transcript history with someone on a new machine.) Saving the Messages history online also saves disk space on your Mac.
Storage optimization. The idea: As your phone begins to run out of space, your oldest files are quietly and automatically stored online, leaving Download icons in their places on your phone, so that you can retrieve them if you need them.
iPad Exclusives
Many of the biggest changes in iOS 11 are available only on the iPad.
Mac features. In general, the big news here is the iPad behaves much more like a Mac. For example, you can drag-and-drop pictures and text between apps. The Dock is now extensible, available from within any app, and perfect for switching apps, just as on the Mac. There’s a new Mission Control-type feature, too, for seeing what’s in your open apps—even when you’ve split the screen between pairs of apps.
The iPad now offers a “Mission Control,” showing what’s going on in all your apps.
Punctuation and letters on the same keyboard. Now, punctuation symbols appear above the letter keys. You flick down on the key to “type” the punctuation—no more having to switch keyboard layouts.
No more switching keyboards just to type punctuation.
A file manager! A new app called Files lets you work with (and search) files and folders, just as you do on the Mac or PC. It even shows your Box and Dropbox files.
A Finder–a desktop–comes at last to iOS.
Pencil features. If you’ve bought Apple’s stylus, you can tap the Lock screen and start taking notes right away. You can mark up PDFs just by starting to write on them. A new feature lets you snap a document with the iPad’s camera, which straightens and crops the page so that you can sign it or annotate it. Handwriting in the Notes app is now searchable, and you can make drawings within any Note or email message.
The iPad grows ever closer to becoming a legal pad.
Playing Catch-Up
With every new OS from Google (GOOG, GOOGL), Microsoft (MSFT), or Apple, there’s a set of “us, too!” features that keeps them all competitive. This time around, it’s:
Lane guidance. When you’re driving, Maps now lets you know which lane to be in for your next turn, just as Google Maps does.

Indoor Maps. The Maps app can now show you floor plans for a few malls and 30 airports, just as Google Maps does.
Siri translates languages. Siri is trying to catch up to Google Assistant. For example, it can now translate phrases from English into Chinese, French, German, Italian, or Spanish. For example, you can say, “How do you say ‘Where’s the bathroom?’ in French?”
Siri understands followup questions. Siri now does better at understanding followup questions. (“Who won the World Series in 1980?” “The “Phillies.” “Who was their coach?”)
Person-to-Person payment within the Messages app. Now, you can send payments directly to your friends—your share of the pizza bill, for example—right from within the Messages app, much as people do now with Venmo, PayPal, and their its ilk. (Of course, this works only if your friends have iPhones, too.) When money comes to you, it accrues to a new, virtual Apple Pay Cash Card; from there, you can send it to your bank, buy things with it, or send it on to other people.
iCloud file sharing. Finally, you can share files you’ve stored on your iCloud Drive with other people, just as you’ve been able to do with Dropbox for years.
Fixing Bad Design
Some of the changes repair the damage Apple made to itself in iOS 10. For example:
Redesigned apps drawer in Messages. All the stuff they added to Messages last year (stickers, apps, live drawing) cluttered up the design and wound up getting ignored by lots of people. The new design is cleaner.
Redesigned Control Center. In iOS 10, Apple split up the iPhone’s quick-settings panel, called the Control Center, into two or three panels. You had to swipe sideways to find the control you wanted—taking care not to swipe sideways on one of the controls, thereby triggering it. Now it’s all on one screen again, although some of the buttons open up secondary screens of options. And it’s customizable! You can, for example, add a “Record voice memo” button to it.
The new, customizable, somewhat ugly Control Center.
App Store. The App store gets a big redesign. One chief fix is breaking out Games into its own tab, so that game and non-game bestseller lists are kept separate.
After nine years, the App Store gets a new look.
Coming this fall
There are also dozens of improvements to the features for overseas iPhones (China, Russia, India, for example). And many, many enhancements to features for the disabled (spoken captions for videos and pictures, for example).
So what’s the overarching theme of the iOS 11 upgrade?
There isn’t one. It’s just a couple hundred little fine-tunings. All of them welcome—and all of them aimed to keep you trapped within Apple’s growing ecosystem.

One of the first things you notice about the Lexar’s SL100 is how small it is. The packaging is barely big enough to hold a standard 2.5” SSD.
Inside, you’ll find the SL100 Pro portable SSD and a pair of USB cables. The drive itself uses a USB Type-C and comes with a cable to connect to other USB Type-C devices as well as a standard Type-A for compatibility with almost everything you’ll come across.
The SL100 Pro is tiny, measuring about 2 inches by 3 inches, or 55 x 74mm and less than 11mm thick.
The outside is mostly black anodized brushed aluminum, with chrome end caps. The Lexar logo is silk-screened on in white.
The back has the capacity and serial number, as well as some regulatory markings.
One end has the Type-C port, as well as a tiny pin-hole that lets a blue power and activity light to shine through in use.
Under the Hood

On the front side, a JMicron JMS583 USB 3.1 Gen2 to PCIe/NVMe bridge IC provides the bridge from USB to PCIe. A Marvell 88NV1160 quad-channel controller takes advantage of the provided PCIe 3.0 x2 interface to connect to either TLC or QLC flash, in this case, the former.
A pair of 256GB Micron 64L TLC NAND flash chips hang off of the Marvell controller to provide 512GB of physical capacity, before 12GB of overprovisioning.
Software

When you first run the portable ENCDataVault, it will ask you to set a password and reminder phrase. Subsequent runs will ask you to log in.

Once inside, you can drag files in and out.
Your encrypted files will show in the window while logged in, but nowhere else.
Under Tools > Options, you have the option of different encryption levels if you have the full version.
We all know things can happen to portable drives, whether it falls under the car seat or you leave it at your work desk, sometimes you need your files still. ENC keeps a local copy of your data backed up, or multiple revisions if you want.

Out of the box, Lexar’s SL100 PRO 500GB drive comes with 465GB usable space under its default exFAT formatting with the DataVault software occupying a scant 25MB of that.
CrystalDiskInfo
USB Mass Storage drivers are very universal but are garbage for performance. We are pleased to see that Lexar’s SL100 Pro can take advantage of USB Attached SCSI Protocol (UASP) to encapsulate NVMe for maximum performance. A couple of quick tests warms the drive up very quickly to the mid to upper 40C range, but it levels out quickly and stays there, which is a good thing for NAND longevity, it likes to be warm. Not hot, but warm.
Sequential Testing – Variable Queue Depth
Sequential speeds start around 425MB/s for reads and around 390MB/s for writes at QD1. We see a slight dip at QD2 and then things shoot up at QD4. Most users will never get above QD2, and that’s mostly while writing and reading from the drive simultaneously.
Random Testing – Variable Queue Depth
Random performance is really good on the write side, but reads don’t climb with queue depth. Simultaneous mixed-use, made up of 70% read and 30% write is also held back by reads. We would expect the larger 1TB model to perform better on reads as it has more NAND flash modules to distribute the commands to at one time.
CrystalDiskMark 7.0
“CrystalDiskMark is designed to quickly test the performance of your hard drives. Currently, the program allows measuring sequential and random read/write speeds.”
Since not every computer has USB gen 2 ports (10Gbps) available, we also test on a 5Gbps port. The reduced USB bandwidth really doesn’t have much of an impact on random performance, but realistic QD1 sequential performance will show a noticeable impact.
We see random write performance climb pretty significantly, with sequential performance coming in at respectable levels at both USB 5gbps and 10gbps speeds.
Mixed testing is tough on many drives and we see a noticeable impact. USB 3.x has an advantage over older drives as it supports Full-Duplex communications in contrast to older USB 2.0 drives that can only handle half-duplex. The controller on the SL100 Pro doesn’t handle this quite as well as some competing (and more expensive) models but still provides respectable performance.
PCMark 10 Storage Test
PCMark 10 introduces a set of four storage benchmarks that use relevant real-world traces from popular applications and common tasks to fully test the performance of the latest modern drives.

The Data Drive Benchmark is designed to test drives that are used for storing files rather than applications. You can also use this test with NAS drives, USB sticks, memory cards, and other external storage devices.
Lexar’s SL100 Pro does a decent job on both PCMark 10 Storage tests we use. The System drive emulates common tasks from real-world programs and will make heavy use of random mixed transfers. Here, the SL100 Pro averages ~115MB/s while the more sequential oriented ‘Data Drive’ testing patterns creep up to nearly 140MB/s.
ATTO Disk Benchmark
ATTO indicates higher than rated performance on reads and close to rated performance on writes. It’s always nice to get a little more than you were expecting!
Anvil’s Storage Utilities
Anvil’s Storage Utilities has been around quite a few years now, but still provides a good look at many aspects of SSD’s including latency and IOPS. It provides a benchmark score that is easy to compare between drives.
Black Magic Disk Speed Test
Disk Speed Test is an easy to use tool to quickly measure and certify your disk performance for working with high-quality video! Simply click the start button and Disk Speed Test will write test your disk using large blocks of data, and then display the result. Disk Speed Test will continue to test writes and reads from your disk so you can evaluate both performance and readability over time.
One real-world use case of a portable SSD is content creators editing video on the go. This requires a minimum sustained performance level specific to each codec and resolution. Black Magic’s Disk Speed test checks many common ones and Lexar’s SL100 Pro easily sustains enough read and write performance for all of them.
Drive Thermals
It took about 30 minutes of continuous testing to get the SL100 Pro to the hottest temp we saw, around 60C. It wasn’t enough to throttle, but was noticeably warm to the touch, enough so you wouldn’t really want to put it in your pants pocket immediately after use.
Final Thoughts & Conclusion
Lexar’s SL100 Pro is one very capable solution to needing performance on the go. In many scenarios, the SL100 Pro exceeds the rated speeds. While low queue depth performance is a little lower than some comparable drives, the price is too. The 500GB model brings around $100 on the street with the 1TB version landing around $190 or so. Even though it didn’t top the charts on every test, it still was no slouch either. The performance was consistent with only the most brutal sustained workloads heating up the drive, but it never reached the point of throttling. The tiny size, even smaller price tag, and solid performance make the SL100 Pro easy to recommend to anyone needing flexible, portable, and high-speed storage.
